“Bec, you must be tripping!” That’s what everyone is saying about the launch of my second publication! Yes, you heard correctly, I am launching a new tourism publication in April 2015, called Tripping Magazine and the entire team are beyond excited. With my life already jammed packed with family, friends, and the neverending deadline of Core, people are wondering how I can fit another publication into my crazy world. For me the answer is simple. When you have a passion for something and you absolutely love what you do everyday, there is always a way to fit it into your world. I believe this is something that should never be compromised in your life. It’s your little piece of happiness, your ball of sunshine. Creating a business and watching it grow and become more than me, is what I love to do and something I have done from a very young age. Yes, I have had to give up a lot and sacrifice other things, including time with my family, but without it, I wouldn’t be me, I wouldn’t truly be happy. If you can’t be “truly” happy, then what’s the point? Everybody’s passions are different, but the one thing that remains the same for us all, is the happiness it brings. Like I say to my hubby! “Babe you like golf and I love a deadline!” LOL Be sure to check out our new publication, hitting the streets of Townsville, Mackay and The Whitsundays in April! Happy Tripping! Enjoy February

Money, money, money

is it a gift or a loan?

It is common in family law property proceedings that one party will have received a loan from their family (usually their parents) to assist in paying for their wedding, house deposit, mortgage and the like. Once parties separate, the issue often arises as to whether this money was a gift, or whether either party will be required to pay it back at a later date. When the Court is faced with this argument, they are required to consider any evidence as to the circumstances of the loan such as the existence of a loan agreement or a demonstrated payment plan. It is more likely that the Court will deem the loan a “debt” to be repaid if they consider that such a debt would be enforceable in another jurisdiction. If no formal agreement has been drafted however, and there is no evidence as to any obligation to repay, it may be determined to be a gift taken into account as a contribution made by the party whose family provided the funds. The labelling of a contribution as a “loan” or “gift” can make a large difference to the division of property and it is therefore important that such an arrangement is properly documented. At McKays Family Law we recommend that you seek independent legal advice to ensure that what you give or receive is properly accounted for in any property settlement.

Balancing work and family can be difficult, especially if you own a business, as you are often the person who has to fill in when someone calls in sick or it gets really busy.

I can honestly say that I have found balance in my life between work and family but this has been a work in progress over a number of years. Being in business at first I was a bit of a control freak and found it very difficult to hand over a lot of my work and the consequence of that was I was often still at work at 9 o’clock at night. When a team member made a mistake it just impressed on me more that I was better off doing it myself. Holidays were not restful as I was constantly called and e-mailed to make decisions and complete work. Something had to give and I realised that my team was not going to develop skills if I did not train them and allow them to make mistakes. I learnt the art of delegating and accepted that some things would not be done the way I would do them. This was a slow and difficult lesson to learn, but the rewards were wonderful. I have an amazing team, accepting of responsibility, highly skilled and loyal. So how do you build a team like mine, which allows you to take holidays and deals with 99% of things that come up while you are away? It starts with mutual respect and trust and that doesn’t happen overnight. You have to earn respect and that won’t happen if you don’t respect their feelings and opinions in return. Trust comes with open and honest communication, keeping information to yourself or making important decisions without informing them is when trust breaks down. I share my plans with my team, get their input and give them feedback on the results. When mistakes are made, I don’t yell or curse (I may sigh or breathe in deeply) but we work through it together and try to work out ways in the process that we can improve to minimise it happening again. I give them life balance, because how can I expect them to step up and give me life balance if I don’t give it to them? If they need time off for vet appointments or doctor’s appointments, that’s fine, they just take a shorter lunch or come in early. I also allow them flexible hours, so if someone wants a nine day fortnight by working longer hours on the other days, they can do that. The final thing is training and allowing them to make mistakes as they step up and do some of the work I do. This is how I built my team and it has taken time and not every person I employed made the grade and some who did left, but the rewards were well worth the time and patience! www.corelife.com.au 13

Print advertising is dead Or is it? There is no doubt technology has changed the way we digest news and entertainment. New options have been presented to us, and we have embraced them! You can now get your daily copy of the newspaper delivered straight to your iPad, before you even get out of bed and put the kettle on. Gone are the days when you would have to go to your local newsagent to get the daily news, or have to wait for the end of the month to see the release of your favourite magazine… Or are they? Whilst there is much to be said for the convenience of digital consumption of news and media via our smartphones and tablets, they don’t have the same ‘thud’ factor that a tangible magazine or book does. Advertising online is indeed an economical use of marketing dollars, however don’t completely discount the value of printed advertising just yet.

that they prefer. Remember, marketing is rarely one size fits all. So as your marketing strategy continues to evolve and you embrace the opportunities that online offers, don’t discount the value of print either. Magazine and newspaper advertising as a medium can still play a key part of your marketing strategy in promoting your brand to new and existing customers. After all, you are reading this magazine right now, aren’t you?

Consider your clients. How do they digest their information? Online or with a magazine over a mid-morning coffee? How can you find out what they like and read? Where do they get their news and information from? Ask them! Research has shown that people tend to recall more detail when they have read the same article in print rather than online, as these two mediums are consumed very differently. It is important to advertise to your customers through a variety of channels, so they can choose to absorb it in the format

what is your worst date memory? Since then whenever we dine out as a family no matter where, we never order Bruschetta.

I haven’t had too many bad dates.

I’m sure most people have memories of past dates which are better left unsaid, but in recent years a night dinning out with family is my worst date memory. Our family were celebrating our daughter finishing her hairdressing apprenticeship qualification. We had enjoyed a cocktail at the restaurant bar while our table was being prepared.

She was so intoxicated she embarrassingly ate all of the food with her hands.

The waiter then directed the six of us to be seated. We ordered our meal which was to commence with two plates of Bruschetta to share between us. The Bruschetta took quite a while to be served in which time we were all starting to feel quite hungry. It was to be the worst Bruschetta I have ever eaten and in hind sight we should have sent it back to the kitchen. I told the waiter that the Bruchetta wasn’t very good. He said he would inform management. The restaurant manager then came over to our table to ask what was wrong with the meal and then proceeded to inform me that there were different ways of cooking Bruschetta. My family were very embarrassed and not happy with me for complaining about the meal. Since then whenever we dine out as a family no matter where, we never order Bruschetta. I guess this experience was not all bad because we have a laugh and a joke when we see Bruschetta on a menu. Tracey Davies, whitsunday crane hire

I haven’t had too many bad dates. However, I do recall one time when the chair I was sitting on collapsed and I ended up in crumpled pile on the floor. Much to the delight of the other diners and slightly embarrassing to me.

I once went for a ‘few’ drinks with a girl, before having dinner. We then moved onto dinner at a different venue. While at dinner, she preceded to drink more and more at the restaurant. She was so intoxicated she embarrassingly ate all of the food with her hands. There was not much grace in devouring an entrée, main and a dessert with bare hands and having her messily draped all over her face (and in her food). By the end of the date she was so drunk that she passed out in the middle of the restaurant and had to be driven home by the owner. I’m usually quite good at dates, I’m not too sure where I went wrong with this one! Dean biggismall, community solutions, whitsunday

HOME LOANS: YOU HAVE CHOICES Fixed rate demand has hit its lowest level in 22 months, new data has revealed.

Local Mortgage Choice Graham Bowling said with speculation mounting that the Reserve Bank of Australia could potentially cut the cash rate again in the coming months, it is not surprising to see an increasing number of borrowers opting for a variable rate home loan. “At the beginning of December last year, speculation was rife that the Reserve Bank of Australia could cut the cash rate throughout 2015,” Mr Bowling said. “Ongoing weakness in the Australian and global economy has encouraged some analysts to change their cash rate forecasts to include up to two further rate cuts.

Graham Bowling

“While future cash rate cuts are purely speculation at the moment, it would seem the chatter has been enough to encourage more home buyers to take out a variable rate mortgage.” “Australia’s lenders are offering some very sharply priced products at the moment, so regardless of what type of home loan product you eventually decide upon, now is a good time to be a home buyer,” he said.

Visit Graham Bowling’s website at www.mortgagechoice.com.au/graham.bowling or call 07 4957 7786.

According to the latest national home loan approval data from Mortgage Choice, fixed rate home loans accounted for just 22.29% of all loans written in December – down significantly from the 26.98% recorded the month before.

Dee Mangion is in danger of giving estate agents a great reputation! - Amanda Wright, journalist

Selling a property in a buyer’s market If you are a buyer this is good because there is a wide assortment of houses from which to select. If you are a seller it is especially important to have your house priced appropriately. 1. Face the New Reality -- It’s a Buyers’ Market Homeowners who want to sell have a choice: sell in the current market, or wait until later, when market conditions improve. The latter assumes they can wait. But if you are determined to sell, you need to forget about the real estate market of just a few years ago and face the new reality -- it’s a buyers’ market, and you will be competing with a growing supply of motivated sellers to get buyers interested in your house. I believe when trying to sell your home in a buyers’ market, the two most important factors, after location, are price and condition. Buyers know real estate prices went up far too much some years back during the real estate boom, and just because you may have paid too much for your home then it doesn’t mean buyers think they should have to pay same. 2.Research Local Market: The best way to know if your home is priced fairly relative to comparable houses for sale is to compare your asking price to a comprehensive market analysis provided by an agent. This will show listings of houses in your area, and the price range. Look at the listing for every comparable home that is or was listed in your neighbourhood over the past six months. Compare similar properties; make adjustments for locations, age, upgrades and lot sizes. Also, look at the recent sales prices and the original listing prices of comparable houses in the area. Search the internet, most buyers search the internet. See

what the supply of homes for sale in your area look like. When calling in an agent don’t choose to list with the one who suggests the highest price. Select the agent who can back up his or her proposal with most facts and market research. 3. the eXQisit me Simone Baker

On her 40th birthday in September 2013, Simone Baker hopped onto the Faces of eXQisit You train. She had decided it was now or never to link up her carriages, physically, mentally and emotionally, to steam ahead in the right direction. At the age of 29, Simone had full control of her life. She had a promising career as a secondary school teacher and she was renovating a Queenslander with her fiancé. On New Year’s Eve, 2002, Simone lost her fiancé. She had lost the love of her life, as well as her motivation and dreams. She wanted the world to stop so she could process what had happened, but she discovered it’s not a movie you can pause. Life goes on. How has the eXQisit You journey changed you, physically, mentally and emotionally? Physically – I am discovering I am not damaged goods, I will not let myself go anymore. I have lost and maintained 12kg so far. I am slowly regaining my confidence and getting my curves back. Mentally - Learning to accept myself and like the person I am. Believing that I can achieve my goals to get back on track and take control of my life again. Emotionally - I’m still developing. I am slowly taking the “I’m ok” fake mask off and not hiding behind it. I’m ready to throw it away and feel alive again. What discoveries have you made on your transformation journey? Self-worth; simple but effective ways to take charge of my life again. No more excuses, I am in the driver’s seat. Looking after my inner core through healthy eating education and building sustainable habits. Once my “engine” was fuelled properly, I started to regain energy and my get up and go. What is the biggest thing you will take away from this experience? Never give up, never doubt yourself, strive for what you want and there is always help, you are never alone.

What was the toughest part of the journey? Putting myself out there for others to see and judge and make comment about my progress. The negativity I faced as well as the sudden death of a friend led me to a downward spiral for three months of eating too much and not caring. “As Socrates said, “The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but building the new,” and this year I intend to keep building.”

Chef Luke Andrews Sorrento restaurant & bar Family, fishing and great food. It sounds like a winning combination, and for Sorrento chef Luke Andrews, it’s how he spends his days in the Whitsundays. Luke’s career in food began as a teenager in Tamworth, New South Wales, when he met the sous chef from the Powerhouse Restaurant. He was offered a job as a kitchen hand, and was able to learn the basics from other chefs as mentors. He took a pay cut in order to complete an apprenticeship, which combined a qualification through TAFE with work experience at Powerhouse. Luke continued to excel and worked his way up to head chef positions throughout New South Wales and then Queensland. For a change of scenery he took a head chef position at a pub in Mt Isa, and worked in the mines during the day and then cooked at night. “It’s always good to try your hand in something else for a change of pace. Plus I could earn more in the air conditioned cab of a truck than I could as a chef, so financially it was a rewarding time,” Luke said. With a love of fishing and the outdoors, Luke left the arid outback of Mt Isa and travelled with a best friend along the coast. He moved to Mackay for the coastal lifestyle, and worked in a mining camp to make ends meet. It was a tough time for him. The mining downturn had made hospitality a tough industry, and his father went into hospital and then passed away. Through the gloom, a shining light arrived when he met his partner Shelley. The couple moved to Airlie Beach, and have recently had a baby daughter, Chorus. Luke has also just become a grandfather, with his eldest daughter Jemma becoming a mother. Luke has another daughter, Tamika and Shelley has two sons, Xander and Jet. Luke laughed, “We’re a bit of a Brady Bunch.” Celebrating two years with Sorrento this March, Luke is happy with how the new downstairs deck has brought more people to the restaurant.

“The difference is how fresh our seafood is. All of our fish is fresh from the coast. The Coffin Bay Oysters are freshly shucked here. “My specialty is seafood, so I pay close attention to quality. Our seafood platter, the Taste of the Tropics is a very popular dish, as is our Reef and Beef. We do our Reef and Beef a bit differently and we receive a lot of great feedback about that dish,” Luke said. The view across the marina as the colours change with the setting sun is one which never gets old. Experience the bliss of seafood and sauvignon blanc at Sorrento.

“We have the best view in town, and one of the best views in the world. There’s nothing I like to see more than people enjoying some fresh seafood, with a glass of wine in hand, watching the sun set and listening to live music.

“I love seeing the excitement on the faces of the pregnant mums as they step into our store for the first time. “I get to know the customers well and after the wee poppet is born, I’m usually lucky enough to get baby cuddles while mum or dad and even grandparents explore the store. “Seeing the children grow and watching the parents grow in confidence is an added bonus to my job. It’s a journey I’m privileged to be a part of,” Annie said. Annie understands the stress that new parents can go through. She was a young mother herself and had two sons at the age of 22. Annie had a third son later and was grateful that her eldest two boys were old enough for baby-sitting duty, although their motives weren’t entirely innocent. She said, “I remember when my eldest son wanted to take his baby brother shopping because, he claimed that babies and puppies were chick magnets. When his baby brother was a few months older, I finally let him and his mate take him for his first outing with his older brother, only to receive a call 10 minutes later letting me know the baby had pooed and to come and get it! “Of course I told him he would have to deal with it and change the baby himself!” Annie’s two eldest sons and their wonderful partners, have given her three beautiful granddaughters, the youngest only 10 weeks old. Cherrie Baby operates in both Cannonvale and Mackay and stocks many unique brands and labels, exclusive to the area. The Cannonvale store holds a large range of maternity clothes. Customers from Mackay can select what they like online, and it will arrive in Mackay overnight from Cannonvale. The Mackay store is open seven days a week, with late night shopping available on Thursdays. Lay-by’s are available, as well as gift vouchers. Gift registries are becoming a popular option for Cherrie Baby, for baby showers and children’s birthday parties. “The parents can select what they need and the people buying the gifts can be confident that what they are purchasing will be greatly appreciated and well-used,” Annie said. Annie also owns and operates Annie’s Little Treasures, a not for profit organisation which raises funds to help parents with accommodation when they need to travel for premature baby birth services. “Sophie, the owner of Cherrie Baby, is one of my sponsors and donated a lot of shop fittings and goods to get me started, I couldn’t have done it without her support,” Annie said. Cherrie Baby caters up to 14 years of age, for all things cute and small.

Carrie Ison Money-saving Mazda2

When Carrie Ison stepped into Mackay Mazda to test drive the all-new Mazda2, she had no idea that it would lead to her owning the car of her dreams, let alone win her a photo shoot in Core Magazine! Carrie is a Mackay local and is deeply passionate about the wellbeing of animals, recently signing up to become a foster carer for furry friends. Coming from a family who love to holiday, her love of travel and exploration has become all the more possible with her new Mazda2. Q. What did you love when you test drove the all-new Mazda2? A. One thing that stood out to me most was the active driving display. I haven’t seen this level of technology in even the most luxurious of cars. I couldn’t believe that a small car could deliver so much! Q. How did Alycia from Mackay Mazda make buying your new vehicle easy? A. Alycia was the perfect person to assist me because she made the buying process easy to understand. She was friendly and professional and made the experience really exciting. Q. You mentioned you loved to travel and explore, where have you taken your Mazda2? A. I’ve already taken it on a drive to Airlie Beach! Q. Where is the most amazing place you have been on holiday so far? A. I did indoor skydiving at Universal Studios in Las Angeles which was pretty amazing. Later on the same holiday we went to Hawaii and swam with a giant sea turtle. Q. How does your all-new Mazda2 make your life easier? A. Knowing that I will get from A to B reliably without breaking down means that every trip is stress-free. The GPS is great too, now I never get lost! It’s so fuel efficient, I don’t have to spend half my wages on petrol, so it’s actually made saving money easier.

Photography by: iconic bride photography

Q. Now that you’ve had a bit of time to drive your Mazda2, what is something you have fallen in love with? A. The online connectivity is awesome and I absolutely love the seats. They are so comfortable for both rear and back passengers, they feel like they are hugging you. I’ve already recommended buying a Mazda2 to my friends. The buying experience was so pleasant, I don’t think I’ll be looking for another car manufacturer for the rest of my driving life. Carrie won a photoshoot with Core Life Magzine thanks to Mackay Mazda. Chef Pete’s paleo passion

“I like to go barefoot a lot. In fact, even on the set of MKR when I’m filming, I’ll kick my shoes off, find a quiet place outside, sit with my face to the sun and re-connect my feet with the earth.” 32 www.corelife.com.au

feature You are very passionate about promoting food as medicine. If you could highlight one amazing food for its healing capabilities, what would it be? There is one amazing food group in fact that I’m in love with right now and that’s spices, spices and more spices! They create such a depth of flavour in so many diverse dishes but they are also super-good for your system. Take turmeric, for example. This is one of the most nutrient-enriching spices that we can feed our bodies and its healing properties are well documented.” It’s his beaming smile and bright blue eyes that many of us recognise from Channel 7’s reality cooking show, My Kitchen Rules, but it is his dedication and zest for the Paleo lifestyle which has thrown celebrity chef Pete Evan’s further into the limelight. With the popularity of Paleo skyrocketing, Core Magazine chatted to Chef Pete to find out more about his passions, and his upcoming visit to Mackay next month. Chef Pete, what inspired you to become a chef and how did your incredible career begin? “I grew up around the ocean on the Gold Coast and I loved to surf from when I was a little kid. I ended up getting a job making pies in a bakery around the age of 13 and getting to grips with being in the kitchen and on the tools is when I first started developing a real passion for food. My connection and passion for the ingredients and produce I’m working with now is still the same as when I was a wide-eyed kid growing up on the Goldie.” What are the 3 ingredients in your kitchen that you can’t live without? “Fresh herbs, spices and veges, organic, free-range animal protein and fresh vegetables and good-quality fats. I know that’s more than three but they really are the only ingredients you need to create a top-quality, healthy meal.” Being a judge on MKR, you have to taste a lot of different meals. How do you incorporate this into your Paleo lifestyle? “I love being a judge on MKR so much because to be honest, in order to have an interest in healthy eating you first have to enjoy a relationship with food. What I love about shows such as this one is that it’s ignited Australians’ passion for food and that’s where the conversation starts. I do taste a lot of different meals and I judge the dishes on technique, presentation, flavour and creativity.”

What is something about yourself that not many people know? “I like to go barefoot a lot. In fact, even on the set of MKR when I’m filming, I’ll kick my shoes off, find a quiet place outside, sit with my face to the sun and re-connect my feet with the earth.” You are visiting Mackay in March for your tour, The Paleo Way, what is something we can expect to take away from the event? I’m in the UK right now and it’s cold so I’m looking forward to heading to the heat! Luke Hines and I will demonstrate the paleo way skills needed to cook on a budget, make bone broths, prepare family food and healthy kids lunches, as well as teaching you how to ferment in your own kitchen. You’ll head away with a whole lot of interesting new knowledge, a head full of kitchen tips and tricks and thirst to get creative in the kitchen with a whole host of yummy, healthy ingredients. If there was one key message about the Paleo lifestyle you wish people understood, what would that be? “Whether it’s Paleo, Primal, LCHF doesn’t matter, it’s not about the label you put on it. At its core, this is all about cutting out the processed food made from highly refined sugars and carbohydrates, reading your labels and preparing your own meals from scratch so you can start to make healthy choices each and every day for yourself and your loved ones. It really is that simple.” Get to know Chef Pete Favourite colour Blue Favourite holiday destination overseas Namoto in Fiji Favourite spot in Australia It has to be my recent discovery of The Kimberley. Vegan vs Vegetarian what’s the difference? There are many reasons why people choose to live a vegetarian lifestyle, from religious beliefs to the desire to respect animals or for general health and a sense of wellbeing.

They also do not wear any clothing associated with animal products, such as silk or wool, and do not use any cosmetics that have ingredients which originate from animals.

It’s not a new fad either. Vegetarianism has been practiced for centuries by many cultures. The key to leading a healthy lifestyle whilst being a vegetarian is to understand what nutrients you are missing by not consuming certain foods and learning how to balance your meals without them.

Vegans who stick to the strict dietary requirements, but who aren’t concerned with other factors, such as wearing wool or using a honey enriched hand lotion, are called dietary vegans.

So are all vegetarian diets the same? And is there a difference between vegetarian and vegan? Vegetarian is a broader term which encompasses several types of vegetarian-based diets. Vegan is a subcategory of vegetarian. It’s often referred to as being a strict vegetarian due to the strict nature of the diet, whereas standard vegetarians eat other foods that vegans don’t. Veganism is considered to be more than a diet, rather a chosen lifestyle, in order to not harm any animal in any way. A vegan won’t eat any type of animal, so steak and bacon is definitely out, as is fish and chicken. They also won’t consume any products from animals, such as eggs, milk or cheese. Some vegans choose not to eat honey or yeast products.

34 www.corelife.com.au

At the other end of the scale, the term vegetarian can apply to someone who won’t eat animal flesh, but who will eat eggs, cheese and milk. Some vegetarians even eat fish, in a subcategory called pesectarian. Lacto vegetarians have the same dietary principals as vegans, but they do choose to consume milk. An Ovo-lacto vegetarian again makes the same dietary choices as a vegan, except they also consume both milk and eggs. The only similarity between a simple vegetarian and a vegan is that they both won’t eat meat. Vegetarianism is mainly referred to as a diet choice, while veganism is more often than not a religious, political or moral choice, choosing to protect animals to the same extent as humans are. Regardless of which diet you choose, you should consult a nutrition expert prior to starting, to ensure you are receiving the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients required for your body to feel well and live well.

Sticking to your Paleo lifestyle shouldn’t be a nightmare when you want to enjoy a cooked meal away from home. Paleo Café is coming to Mackay, serving a modern selection of caveman inspired delicacies. The mouth-watering menu includes tempting tastes such as crispy skin pork belly, open lamb burgers and Indonesian Nasi Goreng. The Caveman Breakfast is a feast fit for any hunter or gatherer. The Paleo approach to eating is a revitalization of whole and simple foods, cooked to release natural flavour and zest. It doesn’t include the use of refined sugars, dairy products, grains or legumes, and stays away from preservatives and processed foods. What does this mean? Wholesome, nutritious and delicious food that your body will love, just as Mother Nature intended. Paleo Café will also sell a range of Paleo cookbooks and pantry items, so you can cook inspirational Paleo recipes yourself, or for those nights when you just don’t feel like cooking, grab one of our ready made meals to take home. Paleo Café franchisee, Michael Harris, has transformed his life through living a Paleo lifestyle. After tipping the scales at 138kg, he discovered how to change his lifestyle for the better. “I was a very active kid, playing every sport you could imagine. “When I hit my thirties, my career as an accountant had taken over. I wasn’t playing sport anymore, but I also hadn’t stopped eating fast and convenient foods such as rice and pasta.

The Garden Tea House

The Garden Tea House is nestled among the greenery of Annie’s Nursery at the Bucasia Garden Centre, opening for business on Thursday 5th February. Indulge in traditional food and beverages, with home baked favourites including muffins, cakes and sandwiches, just like gran used to make. The signature experience is, of course, the high tea, served with freshly made ribbon sandwiches, homemade butterfly cakes and most important those perfect fluffy scones with fresh cream and jam, all with ample fillings and served with either a pot of loose leaf tea or gourmet coffee. Having grown up in the UK, manager, Jaymes Smith was brought up with the kitchen being the heart of the family, where taste and presentation was paramount. He managed a similar tea house in the UK before moving to Australia where he continued his career in Sydney and Brisbane before moving to Mackay. “The Garden Tea House is a comforting place we like to refer to as ‘home’. The majority of our furniture, tea sets and antiques have been sourced from within Queensland to create very elegant and relaxed surroundings,” Jaymes said. Mums can relax with a pot of tea or gourmet coffee while the children play in the secure children’s play area. “We have a small retail section where we have gorgeous old English tea trio’s, so that if you bring Mum or Granny in for that cream tea and she loves that particular tea cup, saucer and plate, we can sneakily go into the kitchen and wash and wrap them. You then have that extra little surprise for them at the end of your visit,” Jaymes said. Perfect for intimate gatherings with friends, a family occasion or a romantic treat, there is always time for tea at The Garden Tea House.

Everything is sweet about me.. When life gives you lemons, throw them back and ask for chocolate! Coffee Club Airlie’s head chef, Ailen Lord, was already sweet, but covered in sticky molten chocolate she is irresistible! Ailen believes that if you put ‘eat chocolate’ at the top of your to-do list, then at least you will have achieved something important every day. She grew up on the outskirts of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, where she lived until she was 19 years old. She worked hard and saved every kroon she had to travel abroad to Australia, where she explored the East Coast and Tasmania. Estonian winters can reach -30 degrees, and Ailen fell in love with the warm Australian climate. After returning home to Estonia for only a few months, she returned to Airlie Beach and enrolled at TAFE in Cannonvale to study restaurant management and commercial cookery. “Within two months of being in Australia the Coffee Club at the Port of Airlie offered me a position as a kitchen hand, and then later approached me to stay in Australia through sponsorship. I was so happy I immediately said yes! Four years later I am the head chef, I have residency and citizenship is just around the corner,” Ailen said. 50 www.corelife.com.au

Ailen’s special talent is cooking eggs. She just loves them and a number of customers

will confirm that hers are the best in town. “Poached, fried or scrambled, we go through A LOT of eggs at the Coffee Club. My record is to crack 160 eggs for our scrambled eggs in under five minutes, with no shells!” Her favourite comfort food is something you won’t find on the menu though, a traditional Estonian dish called Munapuder, a fresh potato dish with egg porridge and triple smoked ham and fresh dill. “It doesn’t sound like much but it’s comfort food for me and reminds me of home. I visit my family in Estonia every year and it’s a tradition for my mum to cook it for me on my last night before I return to Australia. This August will be the seventh year running I have travelled home to visit them,” Ailen said. As an early riser, Ailen loved the sun rises over the Whitsundays and is proud of her journey to become an Australian. “I’ve worked hard to save every cent, to visit my family each year, to pay for my schooling and my residency visa. I’m very proud of that,” she said. Try Ailen’s famous eggs at the Coffee Club Port of Airlie to savour a plate of perfection in paradise.

turmeric adding more than just spice to your curry

There’s been a lot of talk about turmeric, but is the hype worth it, or is it another sensationalist superfood? Many studies have been conducted on the health benefits of turmeric, with evidence to back up what Asian cultures have known for many years, that turmeric does contain compounds with medicinal properties. Turmeric itself is the spice which gives curry its yellow colour. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and a medicinal herb. The compounds within turmeric, such as curcumin, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and strong antioxidants. However it is difficult to extract the medicinal properties from turmeric solely from using the spice in food, which is why it is recommended to be taken as a supplement. The medicinal properties in turmeric have been linked to lower rates of cancer and Alzheimer’s in South Asia. According to the World Alzheimer’s Report 2009, 3.6 percent of South Asians over the age of 60 suffer from dementia, compared with 6.4 percent of Australasians. Similarly, the World Health Organisation says that cancer rates in India are considerably lower than those in more developed countries such as Australia. Doctors at UCLA discovered that curcumin appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer. Raw is best when introducing turmeric into your diet, by sprinkling the grated root over vegetables or mixing it into a dressing. Healthy fats such as avocado can help the absorption, while rubbing the powder into meat as a marinade will add flavour. While more research is needed to directly link turmeric with these incredible statistics, it can’t hurt to sprinkle the spice liberally into your next curry.

Wheat Free Eating Easy Alternatives As a nation raised on Vegemite on toast, many of us hold bread close to our heart. It’s a tough habit to break! It’s comforting and it’s convenient. But many of us also suffer from the sluggish and bloated symptoms we get as a result of wheat intolerance. Our lives are moving along at such a pace we often grab what is most convenient, even if we know they aren’t the best for our bodies. Wheat intolerance is one of the most common dietary problems we face as a community, and now the supermarkets and health food stores are packed with wheat-free alternatives to add variety and taste variations into our meals.

Wheat Free Alternatives

Wheat free crackers are becoming widely available. Look for 100% rye such as, original Ryvitas. Some cereals are 100% wheat free. Alternatively, brown rice with yoghurt, maple syrup and mixed berries is a delicious breakfast option. There are a variety of flours on the market to choose from, such as almond and coconut flour, buckwheat, rye, rice and potato flour.

Use quinoa instead of pasta.

Most pasta and noodles contain wheat, so look for wheat-free alternatives, such as rice or corn pasta. Sausages often contain wheat, so ask your butcher for a wheat-free alternative if available. To give crunch to your morning fruit and yoghurt, try a variety of nuts and seeds, such as pumpkin, sunflower and chia seeds. Rice crackers with salsa make for a delicious snack, otherwise corn chips are another wheat free alternative. When baking with wheat-free alternatives, it often takes more than one flour replacement for the texture to be nice. Try using a combination of wheat-free flours, and add a starch such as arrowroot or cornstarch, with egg whites to achieve the correct viscosity. Remember that wheat-free and gluten-free are different intolerances. If you are having difficulty deciding which intolerance may be causing you daily problems, please consult your doctor or nutritionist.

SIBO

what is it?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Over growth or better known as S.I.B.O For the past number of years if you went to mainstream medical for any type of sore belly such as bloating gas, constipation or diarrhoea you would often be diagnosed with IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Which to be honest, I often find this an interesting concept. Irritable Bowel begs the question well, ‘What are you cranky with or at?’ And if you are cranky or irritable more likely than not, you are going to be hot/inflamed. So this begs another question, ‘Why?’ This is where I have run into issues in my life as I ask ‘why’ far too frequently and hence didn’t do so well at school!! Today is about SIBO as this is something I am predicting we are going to see diagnosed very often over the coming years. So, what is it ? How do I know if I have got it? And how do I get rid of it? The small intestine is approximately 25 feet long or around 8 meters. It is an area of our body I personally believe we still have a lot to learn about. It is an area of our body that cannot be explored easily, and only now do we understand the complexities of this amazing piece of tube. This tube is full of Villi’s for absorption of nutrient, it has a wave of liquid that flows periodically which is one of its defences against pathogens and it is the area where 80% of our immune sits. Sitting around this amazing tube like organ a vigilant army makes sure no nasties get through their armour into the blood stream that can lead to intolerances and worse. What we now understand is that there is also a multitude of Microbiome that delivers messages and immune support to our entire body. We now know we have more microbes than cells. This is pretty amazing. Just think about this; we are one big walking compost bin... mmmmm The issue is that if we have more bad microbes than good we can than start to have problems with absorption of nutrient, always feeling hungry to gas and bloating after eating. One of the problems that we face is that these microbes have an amazing intelligence and they have worked out if they ban together and make what is known as biofilm they can get into the Villi and literally cause havoc. In fact we know with kids on the spectrum this is one of the issues that we have to work with in their cleansing protocol on their path to healing.

So how do you know if you have SIBO

The symptoms that I have below are taken from “sibotest.com” are: • Diarrhoea • Constipation • Alternating constipation and diarrhoea • Abdominal cramping • Bloating and/or wind • Burping and Acid reflux/GORD • Food sensitivities • Joint pain • Skin rashes • Iron and B12 deficiency • Respiratory symptoms such as asthma How do you fix it? It is about cleansing, repairing and re-inoculation with the good bacteria/microbiome. Our diets today are heavily processed, leaving room for lots of pathogen overgrowth, they are opportunistic, so they will take up residence anywhere that has some stagnation storing, it is their perfect home. So reducing processed foods, eating smaller portions of animal protein and adding in a range of fermented foods is a great way forward. If you would like to know more, or if you would like help in repairing your gut health, I am trained as a Body Ecologist consultant and a colon hydro therapist specialising in the digestive system. Iconic Bride of the month

BROOKE PIDGEON

“Sometimes when you think about having an entire day of having your photo taken, you think sore cheeks and ‘hurry up and end this already’, but we were having so much fun. Norina was amazing. I didn’t stop laughing the entire time, sometimes making the more serious shots a little difficult. She made the boys so comfortable and helped relax the incredibly nervous groom. “Looking back, I think the fun and laughs we had during getting our photos done was a real highlight for us, I felt like I had known Norina for years. For days after we were not only talking about how amazing Villa Botanica was but how much we loved having her as our photographer. “They were truly amazing and I would recommend them to anyone, anytime.”

INTRODUCING MR AND MRS PIDGEON How did your husband propose to you? The way Adrian proposed was really romantic. We had just moved from Brisbane to Sydney and I was a little down, so Adrian told me we would go away for the weekend to cheer me up. Little did I know that he had planned this for a long time. We went out into the harbour on a 40 foot boat, the captain took us for a tour, then he took us to a peaceful little bay and left us anchored up for the night. Adrian was behaving strangely as he had downed a few beers by this stage. Eventually he pulled out a piece of paper with a proposal in the form of a poem. I was so shocked that I forgot to answer, just sat there stunned.... of course I eventually said yes! What song did you walk down the aisle to? I walked down the aisle to “When you Love Someone” by Brian Adams. Adrian actually chose it and to this day I can’t listen to it without crying (happy tears of course). Tell us about your dress… I wasn’t at all sure what I wanted for my wedding dress, I just decided to go out with my bridesmaids one day and try some on. I went to the first shop, tried on three dresses and that was it! I had found the perfect dress a good year before the wedding day. I loved the fitted shape and simplicity of my dress. Did you write your own vows? We did decide to write our own vows. I thought we had agreed to write a paragraph each. Then I found out from our marriage celebrant that Adrian had written a full-page in tiny font, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. His were so well written and made me laugh so much. I’m glad we decided to write our own. Tell us about your favourite photo moment… We chose to have some photos taken down on the beach at Villa Botanica. There was one photo with Adrian and I sitting on the beach and the wedding party came running full speed in our direction and were then told to do something funny when they got to us. It was so funny at the time.

A FATHER’S WISDOM Son: “Father how do I find the perfect woman?” Father: “Son, don’t focus on looking for the perfect woman, focus on becoming the perfect man!” Often, we spend too much time looking for Mr/Mrs Right and our expectations and standards are very high. What we expect to find in our perfect mate we sometimes lack those same qualities within ourselves. Self-reflection is underrated, and it is a great tool that many successful relationships have built their foundations on. “If you want to pull in the big fish, you need to make sure you have the right bait!. Selfacceptance and the aspiration to improve your character is the key to finding self love and attracting love from others. For example, if you are looking for someone that is generous, loving and kind; you need to consider whether these traits are also a part of your character because like attracts like.

0 – 2 Boxes Congratulations, your self-

awareness and awareness for others is the reason why you enjoy contentment within relationships. You obviously understand the value of self-worth and this flows on with your ability to love others and be loved.

3 – 6 Boxes People in this range usually know

what they need to do to build a healthy relationship, but struggle with self-acceptance that restricts them from moving forward. Start implementing the things that you already know will be the key to your future happiness.

7 – 10 Boxes Do you have rules for you and rules for others? In a relationship it has to be equal, have clear expectations and not “do as I say, not do as I do!” Walk in the other person’s shoes and ask yourself is this how I want to be loved? Seek out some good techniques for self-development and your love life will take a turn for the better.

Mackay and passionate about fitness and body transformation. Jess grew up on a station near Dirrnabandi, before moving to South Australia. She moved to Mackay with her then partner Tommy, who is now her husband and business partner, giving truth to the saying that partners who train together, stay together. This month we put her in the hot seat, to find out about her personal struggle with losing weight, and the steps she took to transform her incredible body as well as her life.

Quick fire facts; Favourite Favourite Favourite Favourite Favourite

Colour Lime green Food Seafood Beverage Protein slushie TV Show Generation Iron Music Artist DJ Cory

Q. What was the turning point in your life that made you want to transform your body? A. I was quite large for my body frame due to

lack of fitness influences around me and poor diet habits. I saw a fitness model for the first time and I fell in love with her physique. It was where muscular meets femininity! From that point on I said to myself “I want to look like that”.

Q. What steps did you take to start your transformation? A. I signed up for a gym, and had a personal

trainer for one day per week to show me how to use the equipment. I stuck to it. Seven months in, I was feeling more confident and I met Tommy. We started running together and went to the gym together almost every day. He was my first fitness influence. I also tried to change my eating habits, but now that I look back, I realise I didn’t have a clue at the start!

Q. What was the hardest part of your transformation? A. The start is the hardest. The key is to surround

yourself in like-minded people. I had friends who didn’t understand why I would rather train and sleep than go partying. Never lose sight of your goal!

Q. Where did the idea to start Aussie Supps come from? A. I’ve been in the supplement industry for a few

years and the idea for Aussie Supps has been a long time in the making. The supplement and fitness industry is my absolute passion. Tommy and I eat, train, sup, sleep and repeat, and we love it.

Q. What are your go-to favourite supplements? A. Incinerade Fatburner, Regen BCAA and Scitec

100% Whey Protein.

Q. What is your advice to people looking to lose weight or tone up? A. Make sure you can talk to someone who can

offer you advice on both exercise and nutrition. It’s a huge weight off your shoulders, literally, to get it right the first time, rather than stumble yourself through trial and error.

Also you can’t out-train a bad diet. Nutrition is the key to success.

MODEL Sarah > STYLIST Meryn Dunn > MAKE UP ARTIST Lauren Skippen ‘Blush it Make Up Artist’ AFTER

HAIR COLOUR Meryn wanted to achieve a colour that would give Sarah a new fresh feel but still keeping it very natural. So Meryn decided to lighten up Sarah’s hair up to suit her natural colour. Meryn Lifted Sarah’s hair 6 shades and then used Schwarzkopf Professional Blonde Me toners to soften Sarah’s hair to gorgeous caramel blonde. Meryn accented Sarah’s hair with soft intensive red panels underneath creating variation throughout the hair. HAIR STYLING Meryn then cut Sarah’s hair short, strong and blunt, a trend that you will see plenty of this season. The fashion Style cut at the moment is just on the collar bones below the shoulders. It’s a fantastic length as its not too short and still length to play with. To complete Sarah’s hair, Meryn styled her hair with soft curls using the Cloud Nine Wide Iron. MAKE UP To compliment Sarah’s new warm locks and gorgeous complexion Lauren chose to use an airbrush foundation to create a flawless canvas to emphasize her features. Warm Bronzes and Dark brown hues were used to create smokey eyes which would create a focal point to the finished product. Lauren used a warm dark coral blush to help sculpture Sarah’s cheek bones then finishing this look with a neutral natural tone of lipstick

They are the gateway to many of life’s pleasures, including smiling and laughing, but can easily deteriorate with ageing, smoking and sun exposure. They are the most sensual parts of your body, and often one of the first places that people look at when meeting someone new for the first time. Your lips can enhance your face like no other feature can, giving you confidence and self-esteem.

So is your pucker attention-grabbing? At Allure Aesthetic Rejuvenation Clinic, a simple solution to achieving that perfect pout is with HA dermal fillers. The procedure causes minimal discomfort and can achieve remarkable results. Dermal fillers are made from a natural complex sugar called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is found naturally within the tissues of living cells, including human skin. It assists in skin hydration by attracting and holding water and also combines with collagen and elastin to provide skin structure and elasticity. Luscious lips can increase the youthfulness of your appearance, by filling lines and wrinkles. With the use of HA dermal fillers, we can achieve a plumper volume, we can correct asymmetry, and give you a sensational smile. We also have an expert cosmetic tattoo artist who can give your lips full colour and definition, so you wake up with pronounced beautiful lips. To keep your lips irresistible, give them a weekly exfoliation and keep them moisturised. Use a balm or lipstick with an SPF to protect from sun damage. If you are thinking about dermal fillers to enhance your appearance, then you want a cosmetic injector who knows what they are doing. Dr Richard Hogben is Mackay’s local expert when it comes to injectables, with years of surgical experience and working full time in the field of appearance medicine.

Time to sort through You know what it’s like when you’re mucking around in the garage. You finally have a day off work, and that project you’ve been putting off for months is calling your name. The wife and kids are out all day. You have the whole place to yourself. Peace and quiet. You crack a cold beer and shuffle a few tools around on your work bench. Why is it the tool you need first you can never find? You swear it was right there yesterday. Have the kids been in your garage mucking around? Is it too much to ask to know where your damn spanner is? When you have depression, it can feel a bit like an unfinished project. It can sit in the back of your mind, gently nagging you that it’s there, you have more important things to do, so you ignore it.

Ph 4942 3111 F 4942 3113 drfitzgerald@bigpond.com Suite 6, North Mackay Private Norris Road, North Mackay QLD 4740

The longer you leave it, the longer it will deteriorate. It’s like rust. Get on top of it while there’s just a speck showing, rather than wait for it to corrode everything. When you do acknowledge that it’s time to work on it, it’s not always easy knowing where to start. Just like in the garage, there are some tools that you can use that can help immensely. But your garage needs to be clean and tidy before those tools will be of any use. The way to clean your garage is to first acknowledge that you think

Men’s Health

the clutter you may have depression or anxiety. Remember it’s not a weakness. On average one in eight men will have depression at some stage of their lives and one in five will experience anxiety. Think about your close circle of mates. If one of them was suffering, you’d want to help right? Well the same goes for you. Your friends and family can be a great support network, but they can’t help if they don’t know. After you have acknowledged that you might have depression or anxiety, have a look at a list of symptoms and see how many of them you identify with. This process will help you to slowly organise the clutter in your garage. Have you stopped going out? Are you avoiding socialising? Are you avoiding your friends and family? Have you increased your consumption of alcohol? Have you stopped doing the things you used to find fun? Are you under performing at work? If you have noticed changes in your behaviour, can you pinpoint why? Is it because you feel any of the following: Guilty or irritable Frustrated and miserable Sad or disappointed Overwhelmed Unhappy, indecisive, lacking self-esteem. Are you consumed with negative thoughts that are bringing you down? “I’m a failure and nothing good ever happens to me.”

“People would be better off without me.” This negativity not only brings you down, but it can have a detrimental effect on your physical nature too. You may notice you are feeling: Tired all the time but still have problems sleeping. Headaches and muscle pain. Sick and run down, catching colds frequently. Loss of appetite. Weight loss or weight gain. By associating yourself and your behaviours with the signs and symptoms of depression or anxiety, it can help you come to terms with what you are facing. You need to know you’re not worthless. The world sees you differently than you see yourself. There is also a better way to live. You don’t have to feel like this. Once you have associated your thoughts and behaviours as symptoms of depression, your garage becomes tidier. You’re now ready to discover a huge toolbox of tools that you can use to get the project of healing underway. Your next step is a diagnosis by a medical professional, but if you’re not ready to take that step, there are many helpful websites you can visit to read about other people’s journey. Feeling better takes time, but just like the restoration of a classic car, the time and patience you put in is worth it.

Learning through love

Whitsunday Anglican School

As this is the proclaimed month of ‘love’, it does seem a fitting time to emphasise the importance ‘love’ plays within the development of our children in many facets. Love is, has and always will be, an emotion and feeling that drives and motivates us to strive to be a better person. It has the ability to inspire new creation, deepen the desire to succeed and promote lifelong affiliations with people, pursuits and pastimes. Love, in an educational setting, is one of the most important binding ingredients that creates a holistic, successful learner. Being placed in a learning environment that positively and proudly promotes the attributes of love, can enhance a student’s sense of self-worth and heighten the importance of becoming a scholar of all situations. A place that authentically nurtures students with compassion, empathy and understanding, through love, creates an environment where children feel empowered to take carefully calculated risks in their efforts to increase their knowledge and experience. Supporting our youth, in ‘Learning through Love’, will continue to foster empathetic future leaders, serving others to become the best they can be.

TOP 3 SUPERFOODS...

and 1 Perfect Food.

A superfood is something that not only provides nourishment, but can have a measurable effect on your vitality, health and athletic performance.

1

Raw chocolate is made from raw cocoa beans, which have not been roasted or heated above 115 degrees and are, unrefined and unprocessed. Through this natural state, the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals are more available and absorbable by the body. Raw cacao helps lower the oxidative stress of strenuous activities because of the high levels of magnesium, chromium, B vitamins and antioxidants – thus helping athletes to shorten their recovery time. Cacao also has the highest levels of magnesium than any other food source on the planet!

2

Raw organic cacao powder is available from all good health food shops, and recipes for raw chocolate can easily be found online. Maca powder is derived from the maca root plant and plays an important role in increasing your overall energy and vitality. It also helps to reduce and manage your stress levels, improve your quality of sleep, and increase your libido. Maca aids in this work because it is an adaptogen, which facilitates your body’s ability to balance overall hormonal health. Maca is also a rich source of sterols — steroid-like compounds found in both plants and animals that promote quick regeneration of fatigued muscle tissue and respond to stress. A recent study of elite cyclists found Maca consumption significantly increased their performance and had the added bonus of markedly increasing their sex drives.

3

Spirulina is truly the ultimate athletes superfood. It consists of 65% concentrated protein and contains all eight amino acids. It is an extremely high source of chlorophyll, salts, phytonutrients, and enzymes; not to mention rich with vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, K, and E. It offers strength and endurance and it is best to consume after workouts for rapid healing effects and balancing blood sugar levels. Spirulina also contains the same amount of iron that you would get from red meat. Spirulina based powders are generally difficult to drink because of its strong flavour. Perfect Food by Garden of Life is a perfect way to deliver your spirulina, and so much more. In fact, this powder is so good I decided to print the Ingredients label – check it out! Maca, Cacao, and Perfect Food are part of Betterbody Nutrition’s impressive range of supplements for great health & peak performance.
