Tom Busby’s cheeky on stage presence and Jeremy Marou’s freakish musical ability on all instruments combine to deliver a distinctly Australian way of sharing stories. Their unique song writing brings cracking harmonies, breathtaking musicianship and a natural feel for each other’s guitars that leave you wanting more. CORE caught up with Jereny from BUSBY MAROU when they came to town last month. You guys played a great Q gig last night – did you enjoy yourselves?

Both of your families are Q based in Rocky, Do you go back and visit often?

A

Yeah we’re heading back A there now and just spending time with everyone. We’re based in Brisbane, but I’ve got my 3 kids in Rocky so every spare moment that I get to spend with them is great.

Yeah! We had a great time! The Mackay crowd is always fun and full of energy.

You’re both from Q Rockhampton – how did you hook up? A few years ago, we started A hanging out with the same people. One day, Tom randomly called and asked me to try some original music. We ended up playing 5 days a week in local pubs and hotels. Our sound generated pretty quickly!

Who does the writing – Tom Q or yourself? Or is it a bit of a combined effort? It’s definitely a combined A effort. Tom is lyrical-based, while I take care of the guitar construction. It’s always been easy, especially when we both

stick to what works for us. Plus Tom’s great at telling stories through his writing. It also helps that our band plays the same way as us – that’s the key to a good performance.

album review and shortly after that, we got a call out of the blue. We had 2 days to do it, which was nuts. Playing each song 3-4 times every night paid off and we were able to punch it [record the album] out in one sitting.

Your rendition of ‘You’d Q better be home soon’ was fantastic and went off with the crowd last night – how did the incredibly successful Finn Tribute album ‘He Will Have His Way’ come about? 2 years ago, when we were A unsigned artists, we asked to cover the album. The Australian [newspaper] gave us a 4/5 star

This month we caught up with Outback Jacks to find out which feed to match with which drop.

Surf & Turf: Prime 250g Sirloin, minimum 100 day grain fed, carefully selected and aged for tenderness – served with grilled barra and sautéed prawns in a garlic cream sauce.

Trinity Hill, 2007, The Gimblett Gimlett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand The beautiful rich red colour and the black fruits’ aromas and flavours are complemented by a soft, mouth-filling structure and a fine-grained texture. Cabernet Sauvignon 43%, Merlot 41%, Petit Verdot 7%, Malbec 6% and Cabernet Franc 3%. Clones predominantly sourced from Bordeaux.

OBJ’s FAMOUS Full bone rack of pork ribs: Slow cooked for 8 hours for that ‘fallin’ off the bone sensation
– choose either chilli plum or smokey BBQ sauce, served with chunky chips... “Come on wrap your laughin’
gear around this rack!”

St Hallett, Barossa, 2008, Old Block Shiraz, South Australia Coming from one of the quirkiest vintages in Barossa history, the 2008 Old Block shows what careful vineyard management can do for a wine. Rich, dark and concentrated but with seamless tannin integration, this is an Old Block for the ages.

OBJ offer the Tin Lids room, complete with 3 PlayStations, a DVD player and a colouring-in station. The kids will be amused for hours, so you can enjoy a glass or two of vino from their famous wine cellar!

Extraordinarily balanced, the smooth wheat sinks into the tongue with a delectable doughy flavour, while soft carbonation tickles the cheeks. Mildly peppery hops secure a lovely, clean finish with just a touch of banana. This beer’s not bright, but rather rich and fluid.

Blithering Idiot is a deep-copper ale with intense malty notes of dates and figs on the palate that follows a pleasurably malty aroma to your tastebuds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

This ‘Blonde’ beer is a definite must try!

The blend of Cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hop aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion. Crafted from nearly three centuries of brewing heritage at Scotland’s oldest independent brewery, this ale from Belhaven will have your tastebuds tingling.

Something new, inspired by Japanese “Third Category” beers, this is a light, crisp, easy to drink style perfect with old fashioned fish and chips. This beauty is made from special malts and is low carb and gluten free!

Get your minds out of the gutter - we’re talking about the good kind of crabs! Want to know the in’s and out’s of catching these delicious crustaceans? Bob from Whitsunday Fishing World gives us some top tips for catching these nipping delights! BEST BAITS

RULES

Mullet Heads / Tuna Cuts / Fish Frames

Mud crab keep limit is 10 per person, with minimum size being 15cm point to point on the top shell.

For best results, soak your baits in Tuna Oil for 1 hour or more before use.

Only the males can be taken, ALL female crabs MUST be released.

WHEN Best time to put your pots in is at the low tide and check every 2 hours until the top of the tide, 90% of the crabs I catch are during the run in tide. Spread your pots over an area and, after the first check, move your pots to the areas which have had the best results. Place pots at the mouth of rivers and creeks, tributaries and in the middle of the upper reaches of creeks and rivers.

TIDES

Best results come from the mouth of rivers and creeks as the crabs move down.

Check the underside of the crab shell for the size of their under flap, males have a narrow flap and females have a broad flap.

HOW TO PLACE YOUR POTS

When we have the large tides, I go well up the rivers and keep my pots out of the main stream as the pot will move during the large run ins.

AFTER THE WET

HOW TO TELL IF THE CRAB IS MALE OR FEMALE

Pots should always be placed with the openings pointing the same way as the tide flow.

WHERE TO PLACE YOUR POTS During the low tide, look for small gutters and tributaries running into the main rivers and go up as far as possible and place your pots there. One of my best ways to find active mud crabs is to drive your boat along the river looking at the mud banks and finding fresh digging from the crabs. Once found place, your pots around these areas.

Put your live crabs in a ice slurry it will send them to sleep. • Clean the mud crab by turning him over and cutting him in half, remove the top shell and clean • Crack the main nippers with a hammer and cut the halves to quarters • Place mud crab pieces into wok • Half cover crab with coconut milk

• Add sweet chilli sauce to taste (I use about 1/4 cup) • Heat until rapid simmer, stirring and turning the pieces constantly, approx 10 to 15 minutes • Serve over boiled jasmine rice

What better way to spend your Chrissy hols than camping, road tripping or fishing – or all three? That gorgeous Queensland sun beating down on you as you head out with your mates or your missus for some long overdue R&R – sounds good to me! But before you take off, make sure you’re not going to leave yourself stranded and turn your time off into time wasted.

Getting the battery tested, and charged if necessary, is a vital part of planning any trip with your camper, boat or car. Dual battery kits can be dead useful if you need to charge up a second battery or batteries while you’re driving. Or you can just get yourself an automatic battery charger that you simply connect to your battery, and it will keep your battery charged and maintained so that you’ll always be ready to take off when you want. The Keepower brand of automatic battery chargers are the best, they’re made in Poland and they’ll give you the best performance possible – and extend the life of your battery! Once you’re actually on hols, an inverter can come in really handy to give you full 240V power when you’re nowhere near 240V mains. Another option when you’re out camping in the middle of nowhere, solar panels. Rig up some solar panels and you’ll be surprised at how well they will

recharge batteries for you – as long as you haven’t headed out in the rainy season of course! One thing that’s useful, no matter what, is a small heavy duty jump pack. These little guys are about the size of a lunchbox but they have the capacity to restart even a truck – if need be. Why would you waste time getting jumper leads and waiting for another car to come by, when you can hook this feller up, get the car going and head off into the sunset? A jump pack can be left for four months before they need to be recharged, if you haven’t used them, so it’s not too early to get yourself sorted now for Christmas. And if you still find yourself out on the road, dead battery and no help to be seen – just give Battery World a ring on 131 760 Australia wide and we’ll head out to help you get charged up and on your way again. Have a good one and safe travelling! Gabe, Battery World Mackay, 149 Victoria St

Central Bike Centre in Emerald are the specialists in the development and design of the customised LAMS approved Yamaha V Star 650 range of cruiser motorcycles. From Cruiser to Bobber to Tourer, Central Bike Centre staff can customise your ride to suit you and your dreams. The Yamaha V Star 650 range is available in two model types, the Custom and Cruiser. Both models are equally adept to customisation with real head turning results achievable. The V Star 650 is one of Australia’s largest selling cruiser motorcycles and it’s easy to see why when looking at the results that you can achieve in customising the V Star to make it your own. Central Bike Centre has worked with many customers in designing and ultimately building their dream machine based on their desires and overall budget. From minor changes to exhaust systems through to complete wheel, tyre, handlebar, guards and custom paintwork are some of the options available. The changes are only limited by one’s imagination. Many customers will work with Ross from Central Bike Centre in achieving a staged build whereby they can continue to develop their bike based on their current and future budgets, ultimately achieving their desired outcome in a practical build program. With resale value on the V Star 650 being extremely strong, custom work only adds to the value and desirability of the bike when contemplating selling it for an upgrade. A number of Central Bike Centre customers have seen their V Star 650 as a stepping stone until they can obtain their full open license, however a number of customers, once gaining their open license, have chosen to keep their V Star 650 and not bother upgrading as it fulfils all their desires and requirements. The Yamaha V Star 650 range starts as low as $10,490.00 on road and from there customisation can be as simple as a set of aftermarket exhaust 22 • www.coremag.com.au

ADDICTED TO DETAIL - Whitsunday’s Car Care Specialist began in October 2010 and is owned/operated by Damien Orth. Damien has always had a passion for nice cars, something that goes hand in hand with keeping them in a pristine condition. He has always done detailing in some form or fashion by maintaining his own vehicles along with friends and family. His career as a multiple award winning Chef has engrained within him an acute attention to detail which has been described by some as an Addiction... a new business venture is born. After living in the Whitsundays for the last 15 yrs and witnessing the need for a proper car detailing business, Damien opened the doors of Addicted to Detail. Addicted to Detail will take care of all your car care needs with the same enthusiasm and passion that Damien built his cooking career on.

SO WHAT IS DETAILING? Detailing is the systematic approach to cleaning, correcting, enhancing and protecting every surface that can be found within a vehicle. The knowledge and experience to properly perform these tasks is what sets Addicted to Detail apart from your general so called express car cleaners. Yes cleaning is a huge step in the process of actual detailing BUT it is so much more than just quickly cleaning a car to make it look a little better. With detailing you want the end result to not only speak for itself but it must last too. Spraying a cheap “shine” on your vehicles interior or exterior without the correct cleaning process being carried out will definitely make it “look” clean but this is not correctly cleaning nor protecting your car’s surfaces.

The many procedures that can be performed on your vehicle are, General Wash and Wax, Machine Polishing, Paint Correction – swirl and scratch removal, Full Exterior/Interior Details, Engine Bay Details, Paint Protection for new and older cars, Leather and Fabric cleans and protection, Glass Sealant, Interior UV Protection.

Whilst we live in Paradise here in the Whitsundays, we definitely expose our cars to some seriously harsh environmental conditions... we are close to the ocean, above average temperatures and sun factors, high mineral water that you will generally wash your car with, leaving water spots. Take a moment to think about how many hours a week your car sits in full sun in one of the many car parks whilst you are at work exposed to all these elements.

Detailing in it’s true form is an art, with many variables that only experience, dedication, passion and a keen eye for detail will show in the results achieved. Damien has invested a lot of research and money into the equipment he uses and the types of products that are used and applied to any car to bring out the best possible results.

Growing up and buying your first car is something we all look forward to, especially as a young man, Damien was no different, in fact whilst most guys were modifying their cars to go faster, look better, perform better or sound louder, Damien’s passion was the meticulous cleaning and maintaining of his cars which started with a 1968 Mini Cooper S.

Blood, sweat and tears… These three words pretty much capture the hard-hitting sport of kickboxing. Have you ever wondered how these events get put together and where all the fundraised money goes? Well, each year, fighters send in their applications to the event organisers for selection. This year, there’s been an influx of entries for the popular boxing competition, with over 50 fighters’ profiles submitted so far. With matches determined on weight and experience, each fighter gets a glimpse of their opponent before the match. In addition to the local talent, Will Alfred has come out of retirement to support the event, Troy Mundy’s back to take on the best and Anton’s Boys from Airlie Beach will be strutting their stuff and showing the others how to win! You won’t be able to stay in your seat with this exciting line up! With non-stop entertainment, great light shows, DJ sets, card girls and MASSIVE fights, this is a night not to be missed! So where do the funds raised go? The answer is simple - All profits gained from this event will be donated to the Mackay PCYC. The Fight Night’s organiser, Mick Pope, says that fundraising and donations are vital to keep the PCYC open. “With the cuts in Federal and State funding for this fantastic facility, it’s basically up to the Club and local community groups to keep the doors open.” This worthwhile facility is one of the most popular attractions for our kids during the school holidays, however there’s more on offer than meets the eye. The club offers a variety of services, including the Mums with Bubs program, Bluelight Discos, Bike Safety Courses (concreted streets complete with traffic lights, signs and roundabouts!), sports stadium – with basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, netball, badminton, karate and kindy-gym equipment. Get your tickets for the Tradies Fight Night today and show your support! Australians have the highest ratio of home ownership in the Western world. We have all heard the saying; “it is dead money paying rent”. Whilst in many cases this is a true statement, it ONLY applies if you do not own an investment residence. If you have residential investment properties in a solid safe growth area, there are distinct financial advantages in you, in turn, paying rent. Whilst all costs such as interest, rates, insurance, maintenance etc are tax deductable on your investment homes, this generally does not apply to your own residence. Generation ‘Y’ are realising the benefits of buying investment properties in new growth suburbs and, in turn, paying rent to enjoy the lifestyle of inner city living. Another advantage of paying rent is the flexibility it allows for your career. E.g. an employment opportunity in another country might occur and you have to make a quick decision. It is far easier to hand the keys back to the property manager than to sell your home.

As an example of the volatility of rental investment in mining areas, a few months ago there were very few residential vacancies, but as at the date of writing, the properties available for rent are: Emerald - 104 Dysart - 237 Moranbah - 335 There are 2,300 blocks of land awaiting development approval in Emerald. The State Government has announced plans to release 1000 lots in both Moranbah and Blackwater.

Many of our clients accumulate residential investment properties in solid safe growth areas and pay rent wherever their employment takes them.

Listen to Steve answer his customers’ and callers’ frequently asked questions on 4Hi every Thursday morning at 6:35am.

HAVING MADE A DECISION TO BUILD A RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY PORTFOLIO, THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHERE DO YOU INVEST...

Steve shares his knowledge on how to build wealth, reduce your income tax and secure your capital against inflation.

We start off with a process of elimination of where you DO NOT invest. At the top of the list is any mining town and associated major centres. The next areas to avoid are the holiday/resort/tourism areas.

http://stevetaylor.com.au/FAQ.html

To best eliminate risk, choose a location with a population in excess of one million people, with a low base price and great growth potential. Our research identifies generally the south east corner of Queensland with specific high quality suburbs on the north side of Brisbane.

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL ESTATE AARDEE’S PRESTIGE HOMES OF DISTINCTION

Raoul Daniels Aardee’s Prestige Homes of Distinction have enjoyed exceptional success in Mountain Breeze Estate in building over 25 homes. Raoul’s attention to detail and quality inclusions have appealed to buyers. He has personally designed homes to suit the purchasers’ needs including media rooms, offices, large patios, and most importantly creating spaces to securely park boats on the allotments. Raoul takes pride in the product he produces from start to finish. This includes 600mm deep footings, block walls fully re-enforced with steel and completely filled with concrete. The block walls are battened on the inside before lining to prevent moisture from entering the house. He only uses 90mm timber framing. All of his fittings and fixtures are to the same standard used on the $2million - $4million homes proudly built by Raoul in Sanctuary Cove. Raoul believes everyone’s home is their life savings and he makes it the best possible.

Refinancing a home or business loan can seem daunting at first glance. When considering the benefits though, the decision is easy as. Refinancing, simply put, is paying off an existing loan with the proceeds from a new loan. Savings from refinancing can range from $1,000 to $50,000 on a 30 year loan term. Take it from the experts, Doring Lending. One of Australia’s leading boutique mortgage brokers, Doring Lending provides a private and specialized service in areas such as home loans, personal loans, car loans and commercial finance. “We have the expertise in-house to help people refinance,” said Peter at Doring Lending. The Team at Doring Lending shared three reasons why CORE readers should consider refinancing.

Home and business loans have become far more sophisticated in recent years. These days many home loans have standard features, like offset accounts, lines of credit and account features. These features can provide you with more flexibility when managing your home loan. It’s worth exploring if your current home loan or business loan offers you the flexibility you need to meet your financial goals. If not, it might be time to consider your options.

When you’re renovating your home, you don’t usually need to pay all of your suppliers upfront. Payments fall due at various intervals, so a flexible home loan that allows you to make payments when they are due can be a far better option.

If you have other debts (e.g. personal loans, car loans or business overdrafts) at different interest rates, or savings you could use to repay your debts, then debt consolidation is an option that may be relevant to you. Generally, home loan and business loan interest rates are lower than those for personal loans, credit cards or business overdrafts so consolidating your debts could save you money now and in the future.

How long have you lived in the Whitsundays? I moved to the Whitsundays, from Mackay where I was born, when I was 6 years old. You’re currently working in the mines, how are you finding it so far? I love working in a man’s world. However, the girls are slowly taking over [laughs]. You’ve appeared in Zoo Magazine recently, how was that experience? Zoo Magazine was very much a surprise! The photo editor got his hands on some photos from a shoot I did with Thomas Dang. They emailed me, we did a shoot and then BAM! I’m on the cover of Australia’s leading men’s magazine. I have a feeling you will be seeing me in there again over the coming months. You’ve got some amazing body art going on – do any of them hold special significance for you? My tattoos have no significance really. I just enjoy wearing the art. The only one that means something is the cupcake which is in my armpit. It’s to raise awareness against animal cruelty (cupcake day - RSPCA). 42 • www.coremag.com.au

Marathon man and trainer RICHARD BOWELS decided over a year ago that he was going to attempt to run the entire length of the ellusive BNT or Bicentennial National Trail. And then in March this year he actually started the 5330km track from Healesvale in Victoria to Cooktown in Queensland. While most of us now are scoffing “crazy-son-of-so-on” under our breath reading that, the kicker is by the time you are actually reading this from your armchair, so might Richard - as he’s done! At the time I actually spoke to him last month to write this article, he was crossing the Atherton Tablelands and only two weeks and just over 400kms shy of crossing the grand finish line. This insane adventure is of course not because Richard simply felt like going for a nice long jog to let off some steam. No he consciously put himself up for this challenge to spread the word and raise awareness for SANE Australia, a donation based organisation whose goal is to improve the lives of people living with mental illness and their families. “I chose to put myself through the physical and mental side of this monstrous challenge. Some people don’t have a choice; they just wake up in the morning with what sometimes feels like a monstrous challenge: that challenge is called life.” Coming across the idea by accident while on a run through the high country in Victoria, Richard noticed the stock route indicators which ignited his curiosity. On discovering that the trail led all the way across the Great Dividing Rage, a challenge was born. “I had found out that no one has ever run the route in it’s entirety before, which we estimated was going to take around five and half months.”

The whole challenge has taken about a year and a half in planning including organising sponsorships and mapping out the path. To complete the path in a reasonable (if you can call nearly 6 months reasonable) timeframe, Richard must run anywhere from 30 – 80km per 44 • www.coremag.com.au

day over terrain ranging from flatlands to mountains, forests, plateaus and valleys. The trail was mapped out in 1972 and tested via horseback by adventurer Dan Seymour in 1973, under sponsorship from RM Williams. The idea was to develop a trail that linked up the stock routes along the Great Dividing Range, giving some nostalgia to horse-loving trekkers and provide them with a route to legally ride and also have the opportunity to live the free lifestyle of drovers who, back in the day, all travelled our sun-burnt territories by the old stock routes. Heading out from Healesville on March 25th, Richard has found the main challenges have been needing to scale barbed wire and electric fences which have been erected over the past thirty years, making a clear passageway impossible. “I’ll be running along seemingly completely isolated areas until all of a sudden I run into this massive fence with barbed wiring and electricity and I’m amazed at the lengths some people go through to keep you out. But it’s not until after I’ve risked my life getting through do I get to the other side and think, hang on, what if they’re trying to keep something in!?” At least he keeps his spirits high along the way, which is probably to do with the goodnight’s sleep he gets every night thanks to sponsorship by Maui Motorhomes who donated the camper van his girlfriend Vicki drives in to the next stop, marking the end of a day’s run. “Running takes up a lot of the day, but then there’s also the blogs, media and websites we have to talk to and keep up to date with every day as well, so there’s always work to do.” What’s surprising to find out is, even though Richard’s been running nearly every day for this incredible amount of time, he doesn’t seem to feel any exhaustion yet or even a hint of tiring. In fact he doesn’t want it to end! “I can’t believe it’s gone so fast, I’m really not looking forward to finishing, I wish I could just keep going.” But end it will (and has by now) as on September 15th Richard would have

been greeted by the Mayor of Cooktown and accompanied by a flurry of locals who will most likely escort him straight to the local pub for a well earned cooling ale. “This journey has been really well worthwhile and it’s been good to see that people do pay attention and you are able to get the message out and spread awareness like this to areas of Australia that are isolated, unlike the cities.” The good news for Richard is his wish may just come true, and we should all keep an eye out for his next adventure as it looks like there may be another in the works.

For those of us that love hitting the gym every day because we love it, the thought that we might be overtraining seems outrageous! Overtraining is when our exercise isn’t being completely balanced with our recovery. So fatigue accumulates in our muscle and neurological systems, and even our immune systems. Elite athletes constantly push themselves to greater performances and often succumb to injuries and illness directly related to overtraining from pushing themselves to new limits. Balancing training with recovery is a science, and many athletes have a team of geeks to help them master it.

To grow muscle, increase performance, and reduce injury, your recovery regime is as important as your training regime. Your recovery regime should involve adequate rest, active recovery (light exercise like swimming or stretching), and adequate nutrition. There are some amazing supplements (like Scivation Xtend) that have been proven conclusively to dramatically reduce recovery time.

Muscle soreness and tiredness are obvious signs our bodies are still recovering from our last session. We all know delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) means sometimes we don’t even get sore from a big session for a couple of days, and then it can last up to a week (which feels like 2 weeks!).

Your muscle and neurological systems (the system that fires up your muscles) can take 2 weeks to recover completely from a big session. One of the world’s greatest bodybuilders, Dorian Yates (won Mr Olympia 6 times), had a training regime that allowed him to train each muscle group ONCE every 21-28 days. He believed this allowed him to recover completely before smashing that muscle group again. He understood the science of it, and he was right. Speak to the most experienced personal trainer at your gym – they can help you with the structure of your routine to maximise your results from proper recovery. Speak to the guy at your supplement shop that knows his stuff about amino acids and recovery supplements.

CORE caught up with Zoe-Claire Yaworsky after her recent win at ANB Queensland State Titles in September this year. Tell us a little about Q yourself.

1st Place Novice Figure Short and Best Posing.

I was born in sunny A Manchester England, relocated to Hong Kong with my family where I lived for 15 years, spent a couple of years in Dublin and then finally to Australia 10 years ago. You will usually find me working at one of my businesses (Hipfish or Invention Pathways) here in Mackay, or working out at HiEnergy gym!

What made you want to Q compete? I have always admired natural A figure competitors. The amazing work they put into training and diet to be in peak physical condition is awe-inspiring. I wanted to see how far I could push myself and see what my body was/ is capable of.. and to test my willpower and dedication! After my first comp I fell in love with the sport - I’m hooked!

Were you nervous at the Q competition? Oh YES! I was absolutely A petrified! There is so much preparation backstage and things can go wrong! At one point someone ran off with my shoes (why a male competitor would want my high heels. I will never know). In the lead up to the QLD Titles I had ants in my pants as I couldn’t wait to get there and just enjoyed myself and had bags of fun. How did you feel when you Q won? Wow - I was gob smacked, A totally overwhelmed and in shock for days. I felt truly honoured to be in good enough condition to be up there in the lineup with some awesome women!

Q

What is your normal diet?

I have a clean lifestyle 99% A of the time with occasional treats so I don’t go completely loopy! Whole foods, lean meats, clean carbs, good fats and oils and lots of it! I try to stay well clear of grains, sugar, lactose, soy, GM and processed food.

Q

Nutritional philosophy?

What you put in your gob A has implications far beyond simply looking good. Your body undergoes 6 trillion chemical reactions per second - consider what you’re chucking into your fuel tank. Are you getting the best performance or setting yourself up for illness? Common sense tells us we don’t need to be eating chemical cocktails marketed as food!

Q

What next?

I qualify to compete at A the ANB Australian Nationals in Sydney (14th Oct). There is going to be some tough competition there and I am so excited. I cannot wait to meet another bunch of awesome, inspiring people. Until then I will be in preparation, training hard, and eating wheelbarrows of food!

Trying to lose weight? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Our clinic carries a number of different weight loss dietary supplements, appetite suppressants, professional weight loss advice and diet plans which have proven to be highly effective, and we would love to share them with you. Weight gain can occur from hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, or can be a side effect of certain medication. But the main reason why most of us carry excess weight is because: A. We eat too much B. We make the wrong choices when it comes to food

HERE IS WHAT A NUTRITIONIST CAN DO FOR YOU: • Assess your current diet and help you recognise the foods that are contributing to your weight gain. • Help to design a diet and healthy eating plan to suit your lifestyle and dietary needs.

Take a look at some common mistakes people make when it comes to their relationship with food:

• Write up a shopping list of foods that you can fill your pantry with and replace the ones that are causing you weight gain.

Skipping meals and ignoring snack times: Skipping meals or replacing morning tea with a cigarette or cup of coffee will make you even hungrier at meal times, this leads us to making poor decisions when it does come time to eat.

• Help you to identify healthier take-away and camp-food options.

Piling up food on the plate: Portion sizes simply have become too big! Using a smaller plate helps you to lose weight. Simple.

• Test your blood type to identify which foods will increase fat loss faster that are specific to your blood type.

Second helpings: Filling up another plate before we’ve even had a chance to let the first portion settle in our stomachs. Give yourself 5 minutes before getting up for a second serving and you’ll find that you don’t need it!

To get healthy and lose weight, a person needs good advice, good food and exercise. Just twenty minutes a day is enough to get you into weight loss mode.

Eating sugary and fatty foods: Soft drinks are the perfect example of this. Soft drinks, lollies, cakes, fried foods and white breads are all things that can be easily removed from the diet for quick weight loss.

You’ll have more energy to spend time with your family and do the things you love, a better sex life (we all want that!), feel and look better and higher self-confidence.

Binge drinking: Beer, sugary mixed spirits and some wines will make you increase weight fast. And let’s face it, if you are really serious about losing weight, then you need to get rid of the drinking all together.

If these things appeal to you, then come in the Whitsunday Health Clinic today and speak to our friendly naturopaths and nutritionists about a tailor made plan to get you back to a healthier, fitter, leaner you.

Healthy and long lasting results won’t come from starving yourself either. Every time you remove something from your diet, you need to replace it with a healthy option. Knowing the right types of foods to eat and where to find them is not always easy. Here at the Whitsunday Health Clinic, we have nutritionists who have done all the research to know the best types of foods for you.

Charleville, Queensland The Yabbie Race Festival deep in the Australian outback is a much-anticipated event. Before the race, yabbies (freshwater crustaceans) are auctioned off to punters who then race them for the purse. The yabbie only has to reach the outside of a circular canvas - about three metres - but most tend to laze around in disinterest, much to the annoyance of their owners.

Carnarvon WA The Gascoyne Dash is a hardcore desert racing event featuring a diverse range of off-road racing machines; bikes, quads, four wheel drives and buggies. They race in purposebuilt buggies and motorbikes in a two-day, 500km challenge across some of the harshest terrain in Western Australia.

After completing high school in Maryborough, Jess made her way to Brisbane to study and work as a Dental Nurse. The lure of a big city lifestyle excited her, but it didn’t take long for this country girl to feel homesick. “I gave it a good go, I didn’t want to leave Brisbane knowing that I didn’t give it my all, but it just wasn’t me,” Jess said. After just a couple of years Jess went back to Maryborough to rethink her next move. “I really lost my passion to be a Dental Nurse, and to work inside all day. I wanted to be outdoors, so I started to consider other work opportunities,” Jess said. Considering becoming a Dump Truck Driver or an Electrician, Jess knew she had to move to Mackay for the best chance. A chance at something she felt was already out of her reach, but only just! Knowing that she needed a job straight away, Jess applied for Dental Nurse positions and was lucky enough to get one. She knew that this was her ticket out of Maryborough and a step closer to a career she now wanted more than anything, simply because everyone said that she wouldn’t and couldn’t be an Electrician! “When I first mentioned the idea to friends from back home, they sort of looked at me like ‘as if you can do that’! I guess people suggesting that I couldn’t do it made me want it even more, and proving that I could do it was my driving force,” Jess said, laughing.

EXPERIENCED ELECTRICIANS YOU CAN TRUST

We cover the Mackay region, Queensland. Our services include: EMERGENCY CALLOUT - 24/7 ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION ALTERATIONS & ADDITIONS

After just three months in dental, Jess decided that she was ready to pursue her desire to become an Electrician. Jess walked straight into a local company, MSAFE (Mark’s Security Alarms, Fire & Electrical), and asked if they would be interested in taking her on as an apprentice. Initially she was turned down, however they encouraged her to keep checking back in with them. Over the next month Jess continued to approach all the local electrical companies, but also checked in with MSAFE. After a month of trying they final agreed to offer Jess some work experience. “I worked for 3 months as a Trade Assistant with MSAFE whilst still applying for an apprenticeship. Looking back now, I thought it would never happen. When you are turned down so many times, it dose something to your confidence and it would have been easy to just give up. But giving up is not something I do easily, and lucky for me, I didn’t.” Jess said.

Meet some of our team: Steve, Semon and Jess

Jess was offered an apprenticeship with DR&D Electrical, now known as 24/7 Electricians, and after 3 & 1/2 years she has never looked back. Now in the final 6 months of her fourth year apprenticeship, Jess has fond memories of her first year. She never really got hassled too much, which is expected in any apprenticeship. There was only one real incident she looks back on and laughs about. “I was hassling one of my supervisors to give me something to do on a job site. After I while he must of got sick of it as he suggested I grab a shovel and start digging a hole. After about two hours of digging, I final caught on when everyone kept laughing at me. Yep, I was digging a hole for nothing.” When asked about what it’s like to be a woman working, in what’s considered a man’s world, Jess simply said, “Is it really a man’s world? There are more and more women taking on positions in what used to be considered a man’s world, and most of the assumptions made are purely speculation. When you are out there and doing it, you are considered one of the team no matter what gender you are. There is only one thing you need to have as a woman, and that is a damn good sense of humour. If you act like a “girl”, expect to be treated like one, and that goes for the boys also.” Jess said, laughing. Now that Jess has achieved her goal of becoming an Electrician, she wants to focus on her next goal, which is to find the man of her dreams and buy a house. “I am not ready for kids just yet, but I would love to find a husband and buy a house here in Mackay. I am so over casual relationships! With the limited time people have these days, I want to ensure I am spending it all with someone who makes me happy”. Jess Said. So next time you call on an Electrician, don’t be surprised if Jess knocks on your door. The one thing you can count on is this determined, bright young woman will not give up until the job is done!
