Happy New Year! According to the Chinese zodiac 2015 is the year of the goat and for all those goats out there, 2015 is set to be a good one for you. For many of us other animals, and I am sure some goats too, 2014 was the year of reaching peaks, closing doors and reflecting on the lessons that needed to be learnt from these experiences. The result of this is also the start of your journey into 2015, so I hope you have been studying! The start of a new year is similar to buying a new car, or cleaning out your inbox, you say to yourself “That’s it! I will wash my car every week and file my emails everyday!” Then, life happens and you miss a week here and there and struggle to find time once a month to wash the car, and as your inbox pings with the sound of email number 4891 arriving, you sit back and wonder how you are back here in the same situation again! If you are sick and tired of starting over and you want to change your world, then stop giving up, making excuses and doubting yourself. Close the door on 2014. Letting go of all that excess baggage that only weighs you down and holds you back. Leave it behind to free up your hands, so you can open a window! Enjoy your journey into 2015. Travel safe!

Fate is an excuse for people who don’t want to take responsibility for their actions.
Straight up, NO. I believe that everything a person does is controlled by him or herself. Nothing is pre-determined for anyone that they are destined to follow. I believe fate is an excuse for people who don’t want to take responsibility for their actions. I think it all comes down to choice. We all get the same 24 hours in a day and it’s up to us to decide what to do with our given time. I decided a couple of years ago that if any opportunity was to present itself to me that i would grab it with both hands and hang on for the ride because life is too short. That’s not fate. When there’s a will there’s a way, and it’s called WILL POWER. Stephanie Bacon, ray white, whitsunday

I believe in destiny because there always seems to be a power pushing us in a certain direction, and I believe that power is destiny. I feel that we have choices, and if we decide to do something that is not in parallel with our destiny, then life starts to become difficult. Our efforts to live a good life, help others, serve the community and be one with nature not only feel good, they ultimately lead us towards the fate that was intended.

not all payments are
good news…
Debtors for a business can be a significant problem, especially in the current economic climate. However, receiving payment of a debt from a business which is on the brink of collapse can also cause more headaches. We commonly see clients who have received demands from liquidators for the return of monies which the liquidators have deemed to be “preferential payments”.
What are preferential payments? A payment can be considered preferential when: • It is made to a creditor of the company; • The company was insolvent at the time the payments were made; • The payments had a preferential effect in that a greater payment was received than if the creditor had to prove for the debt in the winding up of the company; • The payments to the creditor took place within six months of the appointment of the liquidators. Whilst creditors are thrilled at the time to receive payment of their accounts, particularly when they have been long overdue, it can be a massive blow when they are sued for it later on by liquidators. Be on alert. If your customers are struggling to meet their payment obligations, you should carefully consider whether to extend further credit or to suspend their accounts to avoid being left unpaid if the company is later wound up. There are some statutory defences available to creditors who have received preference payments. To be able to rely on such a defence, a creditor must prove that valuable consideration was given, the creditor must have been acting in good faith and there must have been no reason to suspect insolvency. To assist in the prompt recovery of your debtors, we recommend that you have written agreements in place with appropriate default provisions, adequate security, which may include personal guarantees of directors, and that you take recovery action without delay. For assistance call us on 4963 0888.

If there is one thing you need to do in a downturn it’s to pay attention to customer service. With everyone competing for your clients or customers and offering the same or similar services, sometimes the only way to differentiate a business is the customer service you offer. We try to do lots of things that are just nice things to do; we try to make every visit to our office a pleasurable experience, from welcome signs, a drinks menu, fine china, friendly greetings, and complimentary umbrella’s when it rains, in fact, anything we can think of to make our clients happy. That’s in addition to completing their work of course. It’s not often however, that you get told by a client that the work you have done for them is life changing, but that’s what happened to us recently and it came down to not just our accounting and tax skills but our customer service as well. We had been engaged to review some tax work that had been prepared for them and had left them with a hefty bill that was much higher than expected. Fortunately we were able to reduce the overall tax answer for them and that was where the skill was involved, but the customer service came into play when we, as a matter of standard practice, reviewed every integrated and income tax account held with the Australian Taxation Office and found a credit of $33,500 that had been there since 2011. That was life changing to them and we didn’t think we had done anything special only what we normally do which is be thorough and don’t just do what is asked but look at the whole picture and go the extra mile. While we wouldn’t expect to make a life changing experience to someone every day, sometimes just doing a little more than expected can make a big difference. Even just a smile when someone can’t give you one themself can make a difference. We have had many conversations on how you can have ten happy clients and then one unhappy one and it seems that the unhappy one is the one that everyone remembers. So we record only good feedback. It goes up on the wall with the client’s name, so everyone is reminded about the happy clients and any unhappy clients; we find out why and fix the process that went wrong that led to them being unhappy in the first place.

Are you looking for a more targeted advertising campaign? Try Facebook advertising. There is a great saying when it comes to advertising. ‘I know 50% of my advertising budget works, I am just not sure which 50%.’ With Facebook advertising, you can be 100% sure of your return on investment change to you can be 100% sure of a return on investment. Advertising will never make selling as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. Like any hunt, the target must be watched, followed and understood. If you want an advertising campaign which shoots straight to your target demographic, Facebook is your telescopic sight. Don’t be mistaken, it will still take a few rounds of trial and error to tune into your core audience (no pun intended!), but practise makes perfect. With all the information and feedback Facebook offers, you can quickly manipulate your campaign to increase your success rate. There are a range of options which work in different ways to reach specific audiences, encompassing categories as broad as age and gender, and as precise as geographic location, relationship status and recreational hobbies. Say a clothing warehouse began to offer free international shipping with orders over $50. They want to promote this offer to potential customers around the world to expand their reach. But not everyone loves fashion. So the business targets their campaign to include Facebook pages, groups or communities which have expressed a clear interest in fashion. While they are reaching fewer people, they are reaching a higher percentage of people likely to be interested in their offer. The broader your search, the more expensive your ad campaign will be. A careful and tentative approach is a wiser use of your advertising budget. It is less about casting the net wide and more about getting a higher strike rate.

The secret to success
is persistence
Simon Reynolds says : “Do you want to know the single most important reason that most people don’t achieve their dreams? They give up too early.” Understanding the awesome power of persistence. Most people simply don’t realise that consistent failure is a necessary component to achieving spectacular success. If you are not failing regularly you’re either aiming too low, or not pushing yourself.
“My Dad was a client of Steve’s for over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.”
Colonel Sanders was turned down 1009 times before one restaurant bought his chicken recipe. Walt Disney got 203 rejections from banks until one said yes to financing Disneyland. Thomas Edison is said to have had over 10,000 separate experiments before he succeeded in creating the electric light bulb. The secret to success is persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence, persistence! But make sure it’s intelligent persistence – vary your methods, be flexible, think laterally. Then keep on going and going until finally success eventually gives in and gives you what you rightly deserve.

Amazing Service
all wrapped up, graham Agostini
Swimming, surfing, barbeques and catching up with friends. This is how we picture spending our summer holidays, great times with lots of laughter. How we don’t picture it, is being stuck on the side of the road waiting for roadside rescue or a tow truck. Avoiding regular servicing may seem like a way to save extra money, but if you skimped on servicing to pay for more Christmas presents, you may want to get your vehicle booked in before you take off on a New Year road trip. Not only may you find yourself wasting time on the side of the road, as Graham Agostini from Goodall’s explains, you may also strike issues with insurance claims. “Skipping services places additional stress on vehicle components, and what may be a minor task to repair now, can end up becoming a much larger problem if left unnoticed,” he said. Graham was born and raised in Darwin, and was only 12 years old when Cyclone Tracy hit the city on Christmas Eve, 1974. He developed a keen interest in motors from a young age and spent his time fascinated with any kind of motor sport, but mainly motor cross. He has spent his adult life in the motor industry, starting as an apprentice mechanic, working his way up to service manager.
Photography by: iconic bride photography
He is the new service manager at Goodall’s Motor Group, managing a staff of 40 in the service department. His main focus is to ensure that all customers have the Goodall’s experience consistently. “Since joining the Goodall’s team I have been impressed with the passion of the people who I work with. Everyone ensures that the staff and the customers are looked after well. It’s an organisation I’m proud to have joined,” Graham said. When he’s not looking after customers or under the axels of a car, Graham enjoys spending time on the Sunshine Coast with his two daughters. “Quality time with them is very precious to me,” he said. To avoid a costly breakdown, make your New Year’s resolution one to be better to your vehicle. The mighty summer road trip awaits. Happy travels from Graham and the team at Goodall’s Motor Group.

Airlie Fitness Wendy & Corey whibley
20 www.corelife.com.au
Owned by local couple, Corey and Wendy Whibley, Airlie Fitness has developed a reputation for being a fully-inclusive fitness experience. For nearly eight years, Airlie Fitness has been assisting in the recovery and development of its members through supplement and nutritional advice. With the inclusion of their stand-alone supplement and nutrition store, Betterbody Nutrition, it has been able to dramatically increase the range and services they can provide. “Supplements such as fat absorbing protein and branch chain amino acids have an incredible impact on a member’s ability to recover from their training. It became clear to us from the start that smart supplement advice meant faster results with less fatigue and injury. This benefits everyone, from beginner to pro athlete,” Corey said. Each staff member at Betterbody Nutrition is a fully qualified personal trainer, with a sound knowledge of training and supplementation to support healthy results. Nutrition and eating plans are also available, provided by one of Australia’s leading sports nutritionists. Ensuring accessibility for everyone, Airlie Fitness is open 24/7, every day of the year, including Christmas Day! So there’s nothing stopping you from achieving your goals every day of the week. Even at 2 a.m. you can enjoy an air-conditioned workout with nightlife music and all the atmosphere of working out in the middle of the day. While Airlie Fitness isn’t staffed for all 24 hours of the day, safety is a top priority with surveillance systems as well as medical and duress alarms positioned throughout the gym. If you are looking for structure and guidance, there are plenty of hours, from early morning to evening, where personal trainers can encourage and motivate you during your workout. You don’t even need to be a member to take advantage of personal training sessions. If you commit to two training sessions per week for a month, Airlie Fitness will give you a free membership to use the facilities any time, 24/7. With a large team of trainers, it’s easy to find one who you connect with, to achieve success. “Our biggest successes come from the member who joins feeling unsure of herself and leaves confident. The guy who has never been to a gym before but keeps coming back day after day. A person who has had a bad experience at a gym but ends up making fitness a big part of their life. The elderly member who can barely walk when they first arrive. However,12 months later they are hitting the weights, classes and machines with ease. “These successes are what we are here for. It’s our passion. Our way of life. There are too many to single out, but every time someone benefits from coming to see us, that’s a success,” Wendy said. 2015 is shaping up to be a massive year for Airlie Fitness and Betterbody Nutrition. Airlie Fitness is kicking off 2015 with a huge 12 Week Challenge, with a Results Guarantee, while Betterbody Nutrition will host three Betterbody Bootcamps which promise to be massive and open to the public. Corey and Wendy will also complete their Diploma of Fitness, allowing them to practice as the region’s first Fitness Therapists, opening up a new world of injury management and rehabilitation potential to their members. The couple, who work together as well as look after their children, say that despite working in a tough industry, they wouldn’t have it any other way. Whether it’s keeping up with the kids at the park, shedding some kilos so you can ride a rollercoaster or toning up to look incredible on your wedding day, fitness can play a big part in how we live our life, and the confidence we have to tackle every day challenges. If getting fit and healthy is on your agenda for 2015, the Airlie Fitness experience is what you’ve been searching for. It’s easy to get stuck in a repetitive rut, where results are lacking and motivation is nonexistent, which is why Airlie Fitness isn’t your ordinary gym. With a goal of being accessible to everyone, to provide a motivational environment and to produce results for its clients, Airlie Fitness is a lifestyle centre with a difference. World-class facilities, 24/7 access, nutritional support, supplement advice and professional personal trainers are just some of the inclusions which will give you fast and lasting results.
“Fitness brought us together and frankly sometimes keeps us together! We couldn’t imagine doing anything else or being with anyone else that didn’t prioritise fitness and training like we both do. It’s a perfect match,” Corey said. The couple are training to compete in the INBA, (International Natural Bodybuilding Association), Townsville Tropix event in May. There is a group of 10 members and staff from Airlie Fitness all training toward the same goal. “Our team has taken years to develop, and we wouldn’t have been able to expand the way we have without the incredible trainers we have. A special thank you to Chris, Cristy, Carmen, Teena, Jake, Tatiana and Chloe. You all do an amazing job for us, and for the members,” Wendy said. www.corelife.com.au 21
Sharon Hassett Clarity Hearing
Friendly, old-fashioned customer service is often an important ingredient in the recipe for success, so it’s little wonder that Sharon Hassett’s home baking goes down a treat with the staff and customers of Clarity Hearing, Mackay. Sharon and her husband John moved to Mackay 31 years ago, with the intention of staying one or two years. They had just had their first child, and decided that Mackay was the perfect family-friendly destination to raise their family. With Sharon and John’s six children, ranging in age from 32 to 15, as well as their 13-year-old granddaughter who lives with them, weekends are now filled with family dinners, lots of laughter and sibling rivalry. As rugby league fans, State of Origin matches are always a fun and vocal occasion. With many mouths to feed and school lunches to make, Sharon shares her baking passion with visitors to Clarity Hearing, where she is the practice manager. “Good old fashioned customer service comes first above everything else at Clarity Hearing. All of our clinics offer a cup of tea and a biscuit, but in Mackay my home baking is always appreciated. The customers love it and I frequently get requests,” Sharon said. Sharon has been with Mackay’s Clarity Hearing clinic since it opened three years ago. As well as looking after the administration for the clinic, Sharon also ensures that the clients have a positive hearing experience. “Clients can often be anxious about hearing, and may have had negative experiences in regards to expensive quotes or hearing aids that aren’t right for them.
Photography by: iconic bride photography
“Being independently owned and operated locally, Clarity Hearing isn’t aligned to specific hearing aid manufacturers and none of the clinics are commission based. This means we specifically tailor solutions to best suit every individual. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to hearing loss, so it’s very rewarding to see happy clients walk through the door for their follow-up appointments. “It’s easy to be happy in a job like this when you can make a difference to so many people’s lives,” Sharon said. Usually the organiser of the family, Sharon was surprised when her children arranged a trip to New Zealand for her and John to the NRL Nines tournament. It was their first holiday without children in 32 years. As someone who has dedicated her life to helping others, it appears that the gift of giving runs deep throughout her family.
Loren Reid
Affordable Dental Care A smiley-faced emoticon is rarely associated with a Facebook post about going to the dentist. However, as Loren Reid from Affordable Dental Care explains, the experience is no longer as dreaded as we imagine it to be. “Using the latest technology to provide high quality general and cosmetic dentistry, going to the dentist is no longer the uncomfortable experience it was decades ago. “Our dental team are caring, empathetic and enthusiastic, enjoy working closely with all our patients to ensure they receive the best possible dental care.” Loren’s passion is dentistry. Many years ago she dreamt of owning a dental practice. Her dental career started 25 years ago as a trainee dental assistant, which progressed to senior dental assistant and then practice manager. She is the director and practice manager of Affordable Dental Care in Cannonvale. She moved to the Whitsundays in 2007 for a change of lifestyle, from Mentone in Victoria. When an opportunity arose, Loren knew this was what she had been waiting for to make her dream a reality. With a quick text message reply from her husband supporting her dream, they set the wheels in motion to create a new dental practice at Whitsunday Plaza (Centro).
Passionate about overall health and fitness, Loren enjoys running, boot camps and cooking for her family, her husband, Evan, and teenage children, 16-year-old James and 13-year-old Holly. “Without the support of my gorgeous husband, my dream could not have come true. His love and support, as well as his hard work behind the scenes has enabled Affordable Dental Care to become the practice it is today. “I would also like to thank another special friend who has selflessly provided support and ongoing guidance to ensure our practice came together.” Affordable Dental Care shows that with passion and support, a dream can become reality.

Designed with the patient in mind, Affordable Dental Care’s fundamental goal is not only to treat the symptoms, but to educate preventative measures to inspire healthier oral health. The family-friendly practice offer payment plans to assist financially, so that crucial trips to the dentist aren’t missed due to times of hardship.
Swimming Rocks
airlie beach swim school with danielle
Swimmers do more kicks than a soccer player, more flips than a cheerleader, more sets than a volleyball player and more metres than a rugby player. No wonder it’s considered one of the best sports for overall strength and fitness, yet a surprising number of Australian’s haven’t learnt to swim. Not only is swimming fun, it can save your life. Danielle Shea and her sister Brooke spent most of their childhood years swimming. In their hometown of Nowra in New South Wales, their mother has run a swim school for the past 33 years. The sisters both competed at state level, and Danielle competed in country championships and still holds the 12 years 100m backstroke record at regional level. After spending time in London as a nanny and exploring Europe, Danielle returned home to Australia and moved to Airlie Beach, where she set up her business, Airlie Beach Babysitting. She also had worked as a swimming instructor for 18 years, and after working at Airlie Beach Swim School for four years, had the opportunity to buy the business. “It’s the most rewarding job you will ever find. “Waking up knowing that I will see all those cute faces at the pool makes me smile, and knowing that I will be teaching them a skill for life 24 www.corelife.com.au
is the best feeling,” Danielle said. Brooke moved to Airlie Beach this year to support her sister Danielle in her rapidly growing businesses. With a degree in early childhood, Brooke is one of Danielle’s babysitting staff, as well as receptionist at Airlie Beach Swim School. “We aim to give a positive educational experience in the short time we spend with children rather than just being a baby sitter. “At the swim school, I love watching the children progress on a weekly basis and become more confident in the water. Working alongside my sister to provide a professional service for the children and families in the Airlie Beach community has been a dream come true,” Brooke said. The number one skill that Danielle aims to teach at Airlie Beach Swim School is to survive. “We want our children to enjoy the water and feel comfortable enough in it that they would be confident to float and swim back to the edge in any situation. “Most of all the parents need the peace of mind that their children are confident swimmers. “Once our students are confident then we move on to teaching them the four swimming strokes, concentrating on technique. I’m a perfectionist
when it comes to technique as it can make the difference between a strong swimmer and a champion swimmer.
Rianna swam for her club at State Championships as a teenager, a passion which led to her wanting to help others achieve this dream.
“It’s a blessing to watch wee babies progress into their school years as little swimmers, growing stronger and more confident each year. I have a specialist training method for babies and toddlers right up to school age,” Danielle said.
“Guiding children to be water safe, and teaching them the dangers of the water is very rewarding, especially when you see young children become strong swimmers,” she said.
When Danielle took over the ownership of Airlie Beach Swim School, she was fortunate to keep two experienced swim instructors, Melissa Szakacs and Rianna Conors. Melissa dreamed of becoming a swim teacher to combine her love of swimming with being able to make a difference in people’s lives. She has three Austswim qualifications and is aiming to receive her fourth in 2015.
Rianna was proposed to on her birthday this year, and spends her spare time with her fiancée, camping and getting out amongst the Whitsunday water. Both Airlie Beach Babysitting and Airlie Beach Swim School are dedicated to providing the best care and service to children.
“Giving local families a skill they can carry throughout their life is a priceless experience,” she said.
“We want to make sure that families feel one hundred percent happy leaving their children in our care. We specialise in short-term care also, for families who are on holiday in the area, attending a special event or who want their children to learn to swim while on holiday,” Danielle said.
After moving to Airlie Beach she is now engaged to her partner Daniel and the couple have brought their first home.
Airlie Beach Swim School caters for all ages wanting to learn how to swim, from babies aged from four to six months old, through to adults.
“I can’t wait to see what the next year brings,” she said.
“We provide one-on-one lessons and small group classes to basic and advanced mini squads. We cater for all children and adults at all levels and will work alongside them to make them the best swimmer they can be at their own ability.”
Melissa also works for Airlie Beach Babysitting as one of Danielle’s child carers.

IS YOUR HOME LOAN KEEPING PACE WITH YOUR CHANGING NEEDS? Refinancing to a new lender and/or loan could reap benefits for borrowers
However, many people may not realise that financial contracts have ins and outs, meaning you may be able to switch products part way through your contract to find one that better suits your changing needs. If a borrower’s financial and/or lifestyle situation has altered since taking out their home loan, they may find that refinancing to a new lender and/or loan offers a wide range of benefits, such as a lower interest rate, fewer fees and more beneficial features. It may help them to repay their loan or achieve other goals, sooner. Mortgage Choice reminds borrowers to carefully consider the costs versus the benefits of refinancing their home loan. Local Mortgage Choice Graham Bowling, “The benefits of switching to a home loan that is better suited to a borrower’s current lifestyle and financial circumstances can be widespread, but careful consideration should be given to the decision.”

“Making the move may involve costs, such as exit fees for existing loans and/or application fees, lenders’ mortgage insurance, stamp duty, etc. for new loans. But in some cases the savings made from reviewing a loan and replacing it with one that better matches your needs now and in the near future can be significant.
“However, saving money may not be the sole reason for switching loan products but it certainly can be an incentive. “When considering refinancing to a new lender and/or loan, be sure to reflect on your short and long-term financial and lifestyle needs and weigh up the costs, risks and benefits involved.” Visit Graham Bowling’s website at www.mortgagechoice.com.au/graham.bowling or call 07 4957 7786.

Keith & Christine sold with Dee My neighbour gave me Dee’s name in conversation one day, regarding selling up and moving closer to our grandkids. From the moment I made contact with Dee, our home was sold! Dee had a plan. Dee turned out to be the ‘Energizer Bunny in Pretty Shoes’ with the right people for every job at her finger tips, getting the home launched onto the market, as soon as we said ‘Go’ Right from our first conversation, Dee was always contactable and always keeping in contact with us at every stage from listing to launching, to sold! She is full of the right information at the right time. Always on the move, working for you!
one from the outset. Negativity is not in her vocabulary. There is no “can it be done” only “it will be done” regarding any issue. Dee has been such fun to work with and is very personable, both inside and out. I feel like we have sold a house and also gained a friend. I would recommend her to any of my family and friends considering buying or selling. She is certainly ‘Real Estate Savvy’

A Specialist Property Management Agency! FACT: No real estate agency can effectively manage your property if the office they operate from is over 60km away from your investment. Ogilvy Properties is a Property Management company based in The Whitsundays offering a unique, personalised property management service. 82% of serious investment property owners have started to realise that it is best to use a specialist property management agency. ‘Property Management Only’ agencies have been prevalent for decades in developed countries throughout the world such as the UK and USA and they operate entirely independently from their big cousin; Sales. You may have started to see this trend emerge in the major cities throughout Australia; but to date, no such service has been made available to the regional communities in Australia. We are changing this. Investors in regional areas shouldn’t have to miss out on such a dynamic service solely because their investment property is regionally located. Many agencies claim to strive for ‘excellence’. Our attitude is that the concept of absolute excellence has to be consistently updated in order to achieve such a goal. This means we are always reviewing and updating our service standards to our clients as each client requires a different approach and often has differing expectations and these all have to be accounted for. There is no real secret to our success; it involves a total commitment across all areas of our business. This allows us to offer a ‘hands on’, boutique style management of your property. Your property stays in the care of those with a vested interest in maximising your property’s upkeep and return on investment. Ogilvy Properties was established with the aim of providing a dedicated and comprehensive property management service to owners of residential and commercial properties. At Ogilvy Properties we do not have a Sales Department; our entire strategy focus hinges upon providing excellence in property management to our clients. If at any stage you did decide to sell your property however, we can certainly assist in finding the right local sales agent for you. Unlike many others in the industry, our Senior Property Manager and Principal, Airlie Norton, is the owner of the business. Miss Norton has over 13 years industry experience in all aspects of property management.

Mackay Rehabilitation Hospital Dr Cody Fitzgerald When it comes to the tender topic of vasectomies, there are often a lot of questions to be asked before a man is comfortable going under the scalpel. Will my testosterone levels drop? Will my voice crack like when I was a teenager? Will my desire for sexual intercourse fade? Will it increase the risk of contracting prostate cancer? Will it change the intensity of an erection? Along with the reassurance that his voice will boom, every man contemplating the ultimate in contraception will want to be reassured that his surgeon has a steady hand. With more than 20 years of local surgical experience, patients of Dr Cody Fitzgerald can feel at ease knowing they are in the safest hands possible. Located at Suite 6, 57 Norris Road, North Mackay, Dr Fitzgerald’s specialist practice can be found on the same grounds as the Mackay Rehabilitation Hospital. With the support of his experienced team, his modern practice performs a range of general surgery and endoscopy, specialising in vasectomies, varicose vein treatment and skin cancer surgery. Dr Fitzgerald also performs a wide range of surgery and endoscopy at the Mackay Mater Hospital and the Mackay Specialist Day Hospital. Patients will need to get a referral from their GP to see Dr Fitzgerald, with privately insured patients entitled to a no gap procedure for in-hospital treatment. This means no out of pocket expenses for their surgery. His specialist surgical rooms at the Mackay Rehabilitation Hospital are designed with comfort in mind for his patients. The rooms are modern and spacious, with complementary tea and coffee and a tranquil outdoor courtyard. Procedures performed at his private practice will incur a small gap fee. However, there are no anesthetic or hospital fees, making surgery a very affordable option compared with other providers. Procedures such as vasectomies, varicose vein treatment and skin cancer surgery become more affordable, performed amongst a friendly, supportive and comfortable environment. Dr Fitzgerald’s areas of expertise also include gastroenterology, head and neck surgery and abdominal surgery. His 20 years of surgical experience in Mackay includes both elective and emergency procedures. For greater convenience, his surgical practice is open six days per week, and on some public holidays, with no additional charge for a Saturday or public holiday consultation. His vision for 2015 is to offer a monthly outreach service to patients in the Whitsundays, including Airlie Beach, Cannonvale and Proserpine, as well as rurally throughout the Central Highlands area. Ensuring patient comfort and confidence is key and Dr Fitzgerald believes the best support team possible backs him up. “My partner, Mr Brett Neilson, is the practice manager and has introduced a variety of innovations which have made the experience more comfortable and convenient for our patients. He has forged strong links with local GP’s and allied health professionals to ensure a smooth transition of patients into our care. “Myself, Brett and our lovely ladies, Deb, Deb and Roxy, have formed a great team. We like to have a laugh and that pleasant work environment is what makes our patients feel at ease. “We welcome all patients, new and existing, to enquire about our specialist surgical facility and wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2015,” Dr Fitzgerald said.

those damned dimples Hypoxi body boutique There is a solution to combat almost every beauty woe, but one gripe persists. Cellulite. Despite a disciplined lifestyle consisting of targeted toning and reduced calories, those damned dimples never seem to disappear. Before you pin your hopes on another scrub, cream or tablet to magically smooth away your bumps, check out Hypoxi, which is proving to be worthy of the hype. Hypoxi was scientifically designed to target stubborn areas where fat gets all cosy and snug, and then never wants to leave. You know those areas well. The thighs, hips, buttocks and stomach. The problem with cellulite is that it can be caused by a number of factors, including hormones and genetics, which is why women of all shapes and sizes suffer from the ‘orange peel effect’ under their skin. These stubborn areas of fat are naturally areas of poor circulation, which is where Hypoxi comes in. Hypoxi combines vacuum and compression therapy with exercise to maximise blood circulation. The S120 Hypoxi chamber is basically an enclosed exercise bike. The chamber allows the vacuum and compressions to stimulate your blood flow into targeted areas as you are pedaling at an easy pace. Users of Hypoxi often describe their workouts as easy and therapeutic. You can even read a magazine or surf the net during your workout! The L250 Hypoxi chamber is perfect for those who struggle to lose weight from their lower abdominal area, the hips and thighs. In the L250 chamber, you gently cycle as you lie on your back, and Hypoxi does the rest. Users describe the experience as relaxing.
The Hypoxi Vacunaut system targets the belly, ideally suitable for women with excess stomach fat, men wanting to get rid of their “beer belly” or for defining abdominal muscles for toning. It is the training system of choice for celebrity Robbie Williams Hypoxi finally gives you the opportunity to design your body. It gets your internal motor running so you can take shape quickly without the need for surgery. Best of all, Hypoxi results are real and measurable. Most clients will see centimetres of reduction around their thighs, hips and stomach within their first few visits, with some clients losing 20 to 30cm of reduction between the waist and knees after the completion of 12 sessions. Following easy guidelines it’s possible to lose a dress size or more. Most will also notice a reduction in the appearance of their cellulite, with visibly smoother skin.
Results – it’s what Mickaylah Dean and her team strive for! If you have a body shaping goal or are curious about what Hypoxi can do for your body, visit Mackay’s Hypoxi studio in Victoria Street in the CBD. Don’t start the New Year with Stress! Christmas is meant to be a joyous time of the year but, unfortunately, this is not always the case. For many people, Christmas can be very stressful and quite depressing for a number of reasons including: Financial pressures / Job Loss / Family tensions / Separation / Divorce / Bereavement
Stress can cause regular headaches, agitation, racing heart, irritability, tightness in your chest and uncontrolled stress can even lead to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and more. Stress is a normal reaction to improve our performance in crisis situations. It is not bad for you in short bursts but, unfortunately, many people live with consistently high levels of stress and this is when it is bad for you and can lead to health problems. Your stress levels should run at 3/10 normally with spikes for short times of 5 or 6/10. Living at 5 or 6 and spiking to 8 or 9/10 is likely to lead to health problems and poor performance. Unfortunately, when you constantly operate at high levels of stress your body becomes used to this condition and thinks that it’s normal…IT’S NOT NORMAL OR SUSTAINABLE! How you feel first thing in the morning is a good guide for low stress scores or, if you have ever been through a guided relaxation process, this is more accurate. The key with stress is that it is your choice on how you react. Take our quiz and find out how you are coping with stress today.
I constantly worry about money
IF YOU TICKED 6-10 BOXES If your stress is at this level it would be wise to consult your GP to ensure there are no underlying health issues. If you’ve been operating at this level of stress for some time, a good way to decrease the excess adrenaline in your body is to burn it off with vigorous exercise. Meditation also provides great relaxation techniques to slow your breathing and clear your mind. 3-5 BOXES At this level of stress, it is important
that you are aware of the time you spend in stress mode. These levels can be quite normal, but as soon as you are aware of your stress try to take steps to reduce the impact on your body. Exercise and meditation or relaxation processes would be of great benefit to your health and wellbeing.
0-2 BOXES Congratulations, your stress levels are well controlled. You probably already benefit from meditation and relaxation techniques or you’ve figured out that if it’s not in your control, stressing will not change the outcome.

Acne
you’re not to blame!
If this article caught your eye, it’s possible that you are one of the millions of people who struggle with acne. Yes, one of the millions! It may feel like you have the worst acne in the world but, the truth is, most of us struggle with acne at some point in our lives.
Stop blaming yourself
You’re not dirty, you’re not unhealthy, you’re not abnormal and you don’t have too many toxins in your skin. More often than not, acne is completely caused by genetics and hormonal changes. You may have larger pores, your skin may produce more oil and you may be more sensitive to hormonal changes. These are all normal differences and, unfortunately, when they combine, they can cause a lot of acne. The good news is, there are a lot of treatments available which may be able to help. Research in how to treat and control acne has come a long way, so don’t despair. It may just be a case of finding a treatment your body responds well to. Firstly, be kind to your skin, and yourself.
Nourishment
Many studies have proven that many ailments can be healed by ingesting the right food for your body. Visit a nutritionist to find out what kinds of foods may help your body to combat your acne. Always drink plenty of water and eat a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Antioxidant and nutrient-dense foods are our friends.
Visit a doctor or dermal specialist
Don’t waste your money on miracle cures you found while surfing the Internet, and stop over exfoliating your face with supermarket scrubs. It’s possible those products are doing more harm than good. Consult your doctor, who may be able to prescribe you a proven treatment. Otherwise, consult a skin specialist who can give you proven examples of their treatment range. In the meantime, stop hating yourself for your problem skin. You haven’t done anything wrong.

Glancing in the mirror one morning, I noticed that my chest area was looking red and blotchy, and that broken capillaries were starting to appear. Over the coming months it got a lot worse, and I needed to cover my chest with make up everyday, before leaving the house. After a consultation with Sarah from Sensorium Skin Technology, I found out that this was a result of serious sun damage over a long period of time. Sarah recommended a combination of IPL and an at home skincare regium. Only hours after my first IPL treatment, I noticed an amazing result. My skin appeared less angry and capillaries were going dark in colour. With the combination of additional IPL treatments, correct skin care and

The combination of the amazing skincare range “Osmosis” with IPL photo rejuvenation treatments, not only transformed my décolletage, but also my skin overall. Sarah offers amazing packages with payment plans, making it affordable for everyone. master sitting cross-legged under a Bonzi tree. If you’re not fit and flexible then that won’t be comfortable, and comfort is the ultimate key to meditation. Experiment with sitting or lying down.
You’re expected to juggle everything, from fitness and family, to work and wealth. There are only so many hours in the day, and only so many hours of sleep you can keep telling yourself you “don’t need.”
Breathe
Outwardly, you may look like a super hero, your friends and family constantly comment, “I just don’t know how you do it,” but if, internally, you feel like a wreck, calming your inner mind can be beneficial.
Breathe deeply to lower your heart rate, relax your muscles and focus the mind. Spend a few minutes simply breathing, not thinking about anything other than how your body feels with each breath.
Focal point and mantra
To clear your mind it can be helpful to have a calming object to focus on. It could be to watch the flickering flame of a candle, listen to a repetitive gong, or repeat a mantra, such as “Ohm”.
Meditation is the art of focusing all of your attention in one area. It is an approach to train the mind, much like fitness is an Appreciate your meditation time approach to train the body. sucker-punch your
sugar addiction Does your morning tea muffin leave you craving another treat with lunch? Do you combat your mid-afternoon brain-fade with a sugar-laden energy drink or chocolate treat? Unfortunately, these habits lead to craving more and more sugar and, while the fix seems instant, it leaves you feeling famished and tired a short time later. Sugar cravings are natural, which is why they can be difficult to overcome. Sweetness is the first taste that we prefer from birth, so instantly we are hooked. The taste of sweetness also releases calming endorphins, which give our bodies a natural high. These cravings lead to Australians consuming more than 20 teaspoons of sugar daily. Considering a large cola at the cinema can contain 44 teaspoons of sugar, it’s not hard to see how, as a nation, we are simply rotting our bodies with the sweet stuff. Too much sugar not only contributes to weight gain, it’s bad for our teeth, it contributes to the early onset of type 2 diabetes and can contribute to cancer. As with beating any addiction, it’s important to get your mindset right before beginning. When you’re ready to face your addiction, here are some pointers to ensure you stay on track.
Eat regularly
Feeling hungry is a trigger to craving a quick fix. Don’t wait too long in-between meals, by having snacks on hand to keep you feeling satisfied. High-fibre and protein rich foods are best, as well as those with natural oils, such as nuts, avocado and seeds.
Reach for fruit
Fruits naturally contain sugar, which is why it is important to only consume one or two pieces per day. When you are craving something sweet, grab fresh fruit, which are bursting in antioxidants and vitamins, such as a handful of blueberries or strawberries.
Drink more water
It sounds boring and seems to be a solution for everything, but drinking more water is the best thing you can do for your body. Often when you feel hungry you are just dehydrated. Drinking water infused with lemon first thing in the morning can help to alkalise your body, while giving you a burst of vitamin C and antioxidants.
Replace snacks with raw and natural alternatives
Giving your body what you crave can be a great tool in fighting an addiction and, thankfully, there are more and more healthy alternatives to choose from. Choose paleo or raw chocolate and keep some handy in your drawer at work.
Treat yourself well in other ways
Avoiding sugar can be hard and there will be weeks where you feel like you are being deprived from a simple pleasure in life. This is when you should treat yourself with something even better. A pedicure and foot spa or that luxury handbag you have been eyeing up.
Detox and learn to love vegetable juice
Get the nutrition in and the toxins out. Once you start eliminating chemicals from your body, your cravings will start to subside. It is also great for your bowel health. When beating a sugar addiction, it is natural to experience headaches in the first few days. This is a combination of carbohydrate withdrawal and the toxins leaving your body. After day five, you will feel better, and your cravings will start to subside. 44 www.corelife.com.au
Stick with your new lifestyle; your body will love you for it.
confused
about how to get healthy?
feature
It’s that time of year again where we are all either wishing we didn’t eat and drink so much or we have decided that this is the year that you are going to be healthy, lose weight and be disciplined for the year so that by next Christmas you will look fab in that swim suit you bought on sale! However, if you are one of the people who are totally confused about how to get healthy, which diet or detox should you try, should you be doing lemon and maple syrup, should you be eating raw, should you be eating clean or should you be fasting and where does paleo fit into this and don’t forget fermented food and broths? The bottom line is that it is totally dependent on you, what you want or need to change. It is not a one size fits all approach. There are many variables to determine the best cleanse for you and eating lifestyle. When we find diets with lots of rules, they soon become unachievable as you will soon feel deprived and have a binge and purge. The best way forward in this dilemma is to follow some grounded principles, determine what your health issues are and what is it that you would like to achieve. If I was to ask you in a year’s time what have you achieved, what would you be doing, thinking, feeling and eating differently. What would that look like and then work backwards. The principles that I come back to every time are taken from the Body Ecology Diet. They keep it simple and doable and it is a lifestyle change that is sustainable for awesome health. However, if you want to give your body a great kick start, cleansing and fasting is a great way to go. When we fast our body is not focused on digesting food which means it can get to work on dumping rubbish, old and toxic cells to add a renewed vibrancy and health. It is important during cleansing that you have time to rest your body, eliminate toxins and feed your cells to give them energy to keep dumping rubbish. If you would like to have a kick start and learn the principles of Body Ecology along with other great tips, book in for our intensive retreats. Whether you are from in or out of town we can put together a great program for you so get you on track to be on top of your game for the year.

how to recognise depression symptoms and get effective help Most of us have moments or short periods of sadness when we feel lonely or depressed. These sensations are usually normal ones that occur in life. They can be the result of a recent loss, having a particularly challenging day or week, or a reaction to a hurtful comment. However, when feelings of sadness and being unable to cope overwhelm the person, so much so that they undermine their ability to live a normal and active life, it is possible that they are suffering depression. It is a disease of the psyche that damages the mind, body and the soul and can affect anyone.
Depressive symptoms vary significantly between people. Most commonly, the person with depression feels hopeless, sad, and has lost interest in doing the things that were once pleasurable. A significant percentage of people with depressive illness never seek medical help. This is unfortunate, because the vast majority, even those with very severe symptoms, can improve with treatment.
Psychological signs and symptoms:
• Persistent sadness or low mood • Thoughts and feelings of worthlessness • A feeling of hopelessness and helplessness • Irritability - even trivial things become annoying • Angry outbursts and intolerance towards others • Persistent doubting - finding it very hard to decide on things • Finding it impossible to enjoy life • Thoughts of self harm or suicide • Persistent worry or anxiety.
kind of insomnia. Hypersomnia (oversleeping) is also possible. Some medications used for treating depression may cause insomnia.
Social signs and symptoms may include: • Under performing at work • Not doing well at school • Avoiding keeping in touch with friends • Abandoning interests and hobbies • Having family/home problems.
Treatment
Physical signs and symptoms
• Body movements may be slower than they used to be • Problems with focusing, the person’s concentration span may be reduced • Speech may be slower than it used to be • Eating patterns change, appetite changes - typically, the patient eats less and loses weight. However, some people may eat more and gain weight. • Low sex drive • Lack of energy, fatigue and tiredness - even small and easy chores feel like unpleasant ordeals • The woman’s menstrual cycle may change • Restlessness - the patient may pace up and down more, wring his/her hands, and find it hard to keep still • Unexplained aches and pains, such as headache, backache or digestive problems • Sleeping disturbances - the individual may find it hard to get to sleep, or wakes up during the night and cannot get back to sleep. Studies have shown that over 80% of people with depression suffer from some
• Psychological problems require psychological treatment. Talk to a counsellor or visit a psychologist. They are the professionals in this field and should be the very first line of treatment. By far too many people turn to alcohol, drugs and pharmaceuticals for help with their problems. These are a temporary fix with little long-term benefit and many unwanted side effects. • Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Swift results can be realised with this treatment and clinical studies report excellent effects with long term benefits. • Exercise, yoga and meditation are excellent for mental health and can be practiced well into old age. Skills taught here can benefit a person for life. • Socialising and spending quality time with friends has been a cure for the blues since forever. • Anti-depressants are by far the most common treatment nowadays. People stay on these drugs for years and years, far longer than it takes for people to typically overcome the problems that life can throw at you. These drugs vary greatly and patients will typically have to try many different drugs over many months or years until the right one is found. There are many people who benefit greatly from these, however there have many concerns from the medical field that these are often over-prescribed and do not actually help people deal with their life problems. These should be the last line of defence, not the first. One could surmise that if the first 4 recommendations were followed the final recommendation would only be necessary for the few, not the many.

Slim down for summer Worried? It shows Christmas. It’s a magical time of year and the favourite time of year for many of us. However, after the presents have been unwrapped, the food has been eaten and we say goodbye to our visiting family, we can be left in a depressing post-holiday slump.

Finances can be an issue, especially if December bills were put aside to extend Christmas festivities. The kids are still on school holidays but they are becoming more restless and, unfortunately, it’s time for you to go back to work. It can be a stressful time and, while your New Year’s resolution may revolve around working off all that Christmas pudding, reducing your stress and getting into a more relaxed emotional state may be better for your body and mind than hitting the gym. Stress is the body’s natural response to intense situations but in today’s high-pressure environment our body’s natural alarm system may be constantly on. What was developed as a ‘fight or flight’ instinct is now being used to get through every day and the body can’t handle it. Stress affects more than your behaviour and emotions. It can be physically damaging to your body. Stress can lead to obesity as the body has difficulty losing weight when it’s stressed. This can lead to diabetes and other weight-related health issues. It can also cause serious issues in your stomach and colon, as well as contribute to aching muscles and headaches. Stress certainly is not for the faint hearted, nor the thin skinned. The damage that stress can have on your skin and complexion can be rapid and powerful. You may have noticed how your skin can appear dry and wrinkled when dehydrated and how your eyes can appear puffy after a bad night’s sleep. Stress can cause all of this and more.
Offer ends January 31st 2015
Chronic stress increases the hormone cortisol, which damages the skin’s ability to hold on to water, causing it to become dry. Cortisol triggers an elevation in blood sugar which damages collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that plump skin and keep it smooth. This causes fine lines and wrinkles. Constant muscle tension also leads to deeper wrinkles. The first step to keeping your skin in flawless condition is to manage your stress, whether through massage, meditation or acupuncture. At Allure, we can help to reduce the signs of stress from showing on your face. Our microdermabrasion and facial packages can reveal fresher, more youthful looking skin, while our dermal fillers and muscle relaxants can reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

look after your liver. Moody, depressed, dark circles under the eyes, poor concentration, weight gain and depression. While these symptoms can be caused by a number of factors, they can also be symptoms of liver disease. Diagnosing liver disease in the early stages is crucial in helping to prevent liver failure and liver cancer. The liver is our largest organ and we only have one, so it’s important to look after it. The liver is responsible for hundreds of essential jobs, including fighting disease, destroying the poisons we put in our body such as alcohol, cleaning the blood and processing food after digestion. It works hard and takes daily abuse, but it can only take so much before it stops functioning. If you make some changes in your diet and lifestyle, it is possible to strengthen and heal your liver.
Drink lots of water
Try to consume at least three litres of water daily, to help flush toxins from your liver.
Limit alcohol and caffeine
Alcohol and caffeine are poisons to our body, and our liver has to work hard to get rid of them. Limit the amount of work for your liver to do by eliminating them from your diet.
Sleep
Sleep increases melatonin, which neutralises free radicals and helps to heal your body. More sleep means more healing time. Having a healthy diet full of the nutrients required for detoxification, can also help. You should aim for two servings of cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower or Brussel sprouts. The natural sulfur compounds in these vegetables aid in liver detoxification. Other natural products can support liver health, and can be taken in capsule form from the pharmacy, or in other forms from a health foods store. Dandelion root can be a caffeine-free alternative to coffee in granulated form. It is used by herbalists to promote liver detoxification. Garlic is a natural detoxification bulb, as it increases glutathione levels, used by the liver for detoxification. St Mary’s thistle can protect against liver damage and enhances liver detoxification. When your liver feels better, so do you. Good liver health can start today and all it takes are a few simple dietary changes.

Battling the mind can be one of the most hard-fought contests a man can face, which is why we are encouraging men to open up and leave the door to their garage open. There can be a lot going on in a man’s garage. It can easily become cluttered. You know you have the right tool for the job in there somewhere, but accessing that tool is another issue. A cluttered garage can lead to frustration, until eventually there’s no clear space left.
The garage becomes quiet. Too quiet.

In fact, any number of our nation’s rugby league stars, including Joe Williams and Paul Gallen, will attest to the fact that the hardest battle they fight is with their own mind, and not on the rugby league field.
Mental health for men is often referred to as a silent crisis, because men are less likely to ask for help when they need it. At the heart of the problem is a long list of pressures and expectations, stemming from changes in the workplace and at home. The boss is on your case, the kids won’t stop fighting and the Mrs is

complaining about not having enough money to pay the bills. Some months are tougher than others. It can be a big load to carry, which is why clearing your garage and getting to know it inside and out is important. Your garage, or your mind, is the one place you can rely on to be able to access the right tools for the job. When it’s clear, free from anxiety and stress, it’s easy to find the tool you’re looking for. When it gets a bit messy, it becomes harder to find what you’re looking for.
It’s important you don’t shut yourself in the garage. The perception is that it’s not masculine to talk about your feelings or that it’s weak to admit that you need help. This is why a lot of mental health issues remain undiagnosed. Movember wasn’t only about growing a kickass mo, it was about recognising that mental health problems affect many of us in society, and that the best thing we can do is to talk about it.
The longer you leave yourself shut inside your garage, the longer your problems will persist, and the messier your garage will become. It doesn’t matter who you invite into your garage, as long as you let someone in. It could be a mate, your partner or even a counsellor.
No matter what you’re going through, remember you’re not alone. Researchers estimate that millions of men worldwide suffer from depression. While the number of women who suffer depression is greater, men are four times more likely to take their own life as a result of mental health issues.
Far too many lives are wasted.
It’s a battle you can win, you just need to let others join the fight. Early signs that you may have a lot on your mind can manifest in physical symptoms, such as tiredness, headaches, anger, lack of sleep, lowered sex drive and irritability. You may not experience some of the more traditional feelings of worthlessness or sadness. If you aren’t feeling right and can identify with some of the symptoms listed above, it’s important to acknowledge that you could use some help. It’s not always clear what causes depression or mental illness, and sometimes it can be a biological imbalance, so it’s not always something that you or anyone else did to cause it. Depression and mental illness is common, and in most cases, it’s treatable. So there’s nothing to feel ashamed about. There is a better life waiting if you’re willing to ask for help. www.corelife.com.au 55

make me OVER! has been created by: adam & eve salon I chose Debbie (my beautiful mum) for my makeover this month as I have been itching to change her hairstyle ever since I started my apprenticeship 2 years ago!
but, because there is so much of it, she doesn’t have the time to style it each day and she was getting very bored with it. I wanted to change it up and make her LOVE her hair while still keeping it professional.
Debbie has been looking for a change for a while but, like many of us, was scared to step out of her comfort zone and change! Debbie has beautiful long, thick hair

AFTER
HAIR CUT Having 2 hairdresser daughters most would think Debbie would have had every haircut possible, but instead, like many of us, Debbie loves her long locks and dreads the thought of losing too much length. After a thorough consultation. we decided to keep it as a longer but more manageable style. I started with a solid form haircut incorporating some soft, long layers to create movement and shape. HAIR STYLING Due to Debbie naturally having so much volume and body, styling her hair was so ideal for the classical look I wanted to achieve.. I used WELLA SP ‘Resolute Lift’ on each section targeted at the roots to promote lift while blowdrying. Following, I used SEBASTIAN ‘Trilliant’, to protect against the heat of the GHD Eclipse which I used to give Debbie stunning, flowing curls. Once I had finished styling, I used a humidity fighting hairspray by SEBASTIAN ‘ReShaper’ to hold the style I had created and a light spray of WELLA SP ‘Luxe Oil Shine Spray’ to finish the colour & style with a luminous result. HAIR COLOUR
Wow I was blown away when I saw Debbie’s hair transformation! Talk about being blessed by the ‘Hair Gods’! All I wanted to do was bring out Debbie’s natural features without over doing it, by choosing colours that would compliment her awesome colour and cut that Jess had done. Face Foundation was Youngblood Liquid foundation in Golden Tan. I buffed this in with Real Techniques expert face brush. Bronzer (Sundance by Youngblood) was used to contour her face. I warmed up her cheeks with Youngblood pressed mineral blush in Peony.
I used Wella’s new colouring technique ‘FREELIGHTS’ and the ‘KOLESTON PERFECT’ range to change Debbie’s colour. I wanted to incorporate warmth into her colour to accentuate Debbie’s beautiful hazel eyes and warm skin tone. Coming into summer, I didn’t want to completely eliminate the lighter colour that Debbie has always had so we decided to keep some stunning blonde splices popping through to add some fun to the style!
Eyes Her brows were filled in with Anastasia dip brow Pomade in Blonde (taupe). I then applied Youngblood mineral shadow in haze (matt grey purple) over the entire lid and under the lower lash line. With a fluffy brush I blended it up to the brow bone. With a crease brush I blended Youngblood shadow Storm (matt black) into the outer corners. I then lined her upper and lower lashes with black eyeliner followed by black mascara. Lips I used Guava (hot pink) lip gloss to add a pop of colour.

Iconic Bride of the month
ERIN TOWNLEY “Our experience with Iconic Bride has been second to none. “I have heard of so many stressful experiences with photographers and ours could not have been more different. Norina made our day fantastic and it felt as though a friend was photographing our wedding. “We were all so at ease with her, especially Jono, who initially was far from keen about the idea of hours of photo’s on the day! However, when we met Norina for the first time, both of us were blown away with her enthusiasm and how fun she made the whole experience, let alone the positions she puts herself in for a great photo opportunity. “We cannot thank Norina and the team at Iconic Bride enough for how helpful they have been. The professionalism they showed and, of course, the magical photos. “You made our special day complete.”
Introducing Mr and Mrs Townley
What was your ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’? I had a few special items for my something old, new, borrowed and blue. My old item was a brooch from my great grandmother and I borrowed my grandmother’s engagement ring for the day. My bouquet was made of brooches and I had a blue four leaf clover as something blue and my dress was new. What song did you walk down the aisle to? I walked down the aisle to a string quartet version of I Will Never Give Up. Tell us about your dress… My dress was from Hills in Hollywood. I wanted something simple and elegant. However, for the ceremony my mum designed and hand sewed a lace top which is a beautiful keepsake and when I took it off at the reception a lot of our guests thought that I had purchased a second dress. Any silly moments that you look back on and laugh? When we were getting photos we were under a beautiful big mango tree and a bird pooed all down the back of the train of my dress. It was hilarious and Norina assures me it is good luck. Tell us about your favourite photo location… We had all the photos on the cane farm and cow paddocks that we live on. This was very meaningful to us as it’s where we call home. It really does have some hidden treasures that Norina captured beautifully.

STRUCTURE HOME STUDY FOR SUCCESS It’s never too early, or too late, to teach children how to prioritise important tasks and get organised.
bit of down time after their day, so it would be a good chance for them to have an afternoon snack and unwind.
Students who have great organisational skills have the ability to develop and maintain systems to learn better, and to be more accomplished.
Establish a set time for homework, perhaps a half-hour or hour depending on their age, before dinner. Be available to help them with their homework. This will give you the opportunity to see how well they are understanding the work given to them.
The skills and habits they develop during primary school will ultimately carry-over into their high school years, and into their adult life. While most of their learning is done at school, there are things you can do at home to enhance their learning.
Set up a study space
It’s important for children to have a designated study area, where they can comfortably work. It should be a place where they can write and draw, and have all their stationary requirements and books close at hand. Children who try and study in a lounge or kitchen are easily distracted by other members of the family.
Establish an after school routine
Train good habits early by sticking to an afternoon routine. When the kids get home, they unpack their schoolbag and put it where it belongs. Empty and rinse their lunch box and drink bottle. Get changed out of their school uniform and place dirty clothes in the laundry hamper. They may want a 64 www.corelife.com.au
Encourage family charts and planners
When the entire family knows what is going on, everyone has the ability to become more organised. After school sports and music lessons, dental and doctor appointments, birthday parties and other important engagements. Daily chores should also be charted so that children get into the habit of helping with the housework, to develop the skills they will need later in life. Knowing that they have daily responsibilities will encourage them to prioritise their day in order to have more time for play. Treats and rewards are a great way to encourage your children to stay on task. Their future selves will thank you for it.

learning When contemplating your child’s learning environment for 2015, consider the advantage of one which is big enough to provide its students with great opportunities, yet small enough to ensure each student receives personal care and attention. With approximately 400 students from years Prep to Year 12, Whitsunday Christian College offers just that, within a safe and caring Christian environment. In 2015, Whitsunday Christian College has exciting plans to enhance its students learning experience. As part of its continual commitment to improvement, it will be involved in the Self Improving Schools Program through Independent Schools Queensland, which will see the College receiving expert support from a personal consultant to achieve improvement in key areas. The use of technology in the College will increase next year as it begins utilising tablets to provide interactive learning activities for Primary School classes, as well as the use of class laptops. This will be on top of the high level of access to laptops and desktops already afforded to its Secondary students, which includes every student in Years 10 - 12 having their own
laptop. To further enhance its pastoral care, the College is introducing care groups in 2015. This will see a buddy system established in which older students will be given the responsibility of caring for younger students to ensure every student has a sense of belonging. It is the school’s goal to teach a curriculum which is consistent with biblical truth and also introduce practices to children which honour God. This is done through a daily routine of commencing the day with prayer, holding regular chapel services and the teaching of biblical studies to students of all year levels. God has a purpose for each child and, at Whitsunday Christian College, that purpose will be nurtured, to allow every student to discover and develop their unique gifts and talents, to reach their full potential.

Educational Holiday Day Camp
Beat the bullies It’s one of the toughest situations you can face as a parent. What to do if your child is being bullied, or if they are the bully. How much is normal and how far is too far?
It’s important to find out the extent of the bullying and whether or not it’s something your child can work through themselves.
We now know that even small amounts of bullying can be detrimental to a child’s development. Worse still, it can lead to mental health problems and suicide. Most of us can remember the person who tormented us at school. It’s not a pleasant memory.
An important step is to then make an appointment with your child’s teacher. Often the teacher won’t know that the bullying is taking place, but they should be made aware. Don’t blame the teacher for what is happening. Just give them the facts and how it is impacting your child. Talk to the teacher about keeping the conversation confidential, so your child won’t be frightened of being exposed as a tattle-tale.
It’s a pain that lasts a lifetime, so why do we accept it as being a part of our children’s life?
If the bullying escalates to violence then you have the right to involve the police, as no child should be physically harmed.
There’s a good chance that your child won’t openly tell you they are being bullied. They don’t want to upset you, and they don’t want you to think they are unpopular. They may also be frightened about repercussions from the bully.
If your child has difficulty talking about their problems, then encourage them to talk to a friend who they trust, or take them to see a professional who can help. The most important thing is that they feel they can talk to someone, and that they have an environment which is safe.
Instead, the feelings will manifest in other ways, such as your child not wanting to go to school. Others may become withdrawn, while some will become angry. Self-harm is another symptom of potential bullying.
Remind your children that bullies are cowards and are less likely to pick on a group of people. Bullies often tease others to make themselves feel better and are looking for praise from peers. So encourage your children to never feed a bullies ego and to not support a bully when they are picking on someone else.
Is name-calling and teasing a natural part of human life?
If your child does come to you about their bullying, it’s important to listen. Don’t get angry and threaten the bully, as this may scare your child. Don’t ask them what they did to cause the bullying either, as more often than not, bullying is random and not logical. It doesn’t matter why it’s happening. All that matters is that it is happening. Ask your child what solutions they think will help. Find out their thoughts, and this will lead to them telling you what they want you to do to help.
Bullying isn’t cool.
It starts at home. If your children hear you talking badly about others, they believe it is acceptable behaviour.
End intolerance to beat the bullies.

Annie’s Swim School
Where water becomes an adventure I designed Annie’s Swim School to teach children to learn to swim quicker and be confident in the water to be able to survive.
In Germany, I worked as a Lifeguard and now am a mum with two children. I have experienced first hand how frightened children can be around water. I am absolutely passionate about my mission as a Royal Life Saving Trainer, Swim Teacher and Swim Coach. I believe swimming should be the first sport a child should learn. The drowning rate in Queensland for under five year olds is pretty high due to the active outdoor, Australian lifestyle we live. How beneficial is swimming to a child’s development? Griffith Institute for Educational Research recently revealed children who learn to swim from a younger age reached many developmental milestones earlier than other children of the same age. Some of these milestones included visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, coloring-in and drawing lines and shapes, mathematical-related tasks and literacy and numeracy. Children in Queensland need to be ready for school at the age of five. They need to be able to concentrate, listen, be apart of a group and follow directions and rules. It teaches character building, such as learning to trust others, helps to lose separation anxiety, teaches children how to have fun with other children, learning to cope with new skills and growing confidence. All these milestones are included in our ‘learn to swim program’. This gives your child a better head start for school. We offer baby lessons from any age up to squad preparation. Learn about the reef, learn to snorkel and learn to take responsibilities.

looking after young bodies choosing the
right backpack
Not all backpacks are created equal. School bags are an essential part of the back to school shopping list, as choosing the right or wrong one can affect your child for their entire educational year. Research percentages vary, but studies repeatedly show that up to 80 and even 90 percent of children don’t wear their school bag correctly, which can lead to permanent back damage. Take your child shopping for their school bag, as they will know what they do and don’t like. By getting a backpack they like, they will be more likely to wear it correctly. Choose one with wide and padded shoulder straps, so weight is distributed evenly over a bigger surface. This should help to eliminate shoulder pain. Try to encourage your child to wear the bag with both straps and not just one. Opt for a strong but lightweight material. The lighter the bag, the less weight your child will have to carry around. Keep this in consideration when buying other school accessories too, such as their laptop, drink bottle and lunch box. The lighter, the better. Choose the bag to best fit everything your child needs every day. If they require a laptop, then there are school bags with specific padded spaces to accommodate this. Multiple compartments are handy as it will be easier for your child to organise their belongings.
It’s already the middle of the holiday season. The structural stresses from sitting at the desks without the right posture, the backpacks, library bags, adventures during recess and lunch time, school sports and many other things are all a thing of the past for the kids for the time being. School holidays also mean a lot of fun and adventure, whether it is a family trip during the holidays, playing sports with friends, or all the extra holiday time that may be spent in front of the TV, internet and playing games. Children being children, these are all the normal things that children do, but it is important to make sure that they are growing healthy and develop to their optimum potential. Doing active activities and running around may bring stresses to the body if it is not properly balanced, whether it be structural or chemical. Sitting in front of the computer or TV for extended periods of time is another factor that places stress on a growing body. Also, I’m sure we are all well acquainted with the smart phone, iPad, computer/console game hunched posture that is too common among children these days. So, taking regular breaks and getting out into the sun is very important. Being young, their bodies may be able to handle these stressors a bit better than adults because their bodies are still more adaptable and compensate better. However, they are still stressing the body nonetheless. Because these things place unneeded stress upon the nervous system, and being the system that coordinates everything within the body whether it be the muscles, joints, organ, posture, chemical, emotion and balance, it is important to make sure that we minimize these stresses upon the nervous system as much as possible. It is especially important to get their little bodies ready for the new school year, so that they can continue to grow to their full potential and be healthier. We are happy to help all the little sprouts of Mackay at Little Sprouts Chiropractic, where we specialize in looking after children and babies.
Once the perfect bag is purchased, there are things you can do to ensure it is worn properly. The bag should sit squarely against the back in a comfortable position, not too high and not too low. Encourage your child to empty their bag each evening to ensure excess leftovers aren’t left to accumulate in the bag, adding to the weight over time. This will also help to ensure you receive important notices daily. Most importantly, monitor their pain level. If they complain that their bag is too heavy, uncomfortable or they have back, neck or shoulder pain, then see what you can do to remedy the problem, otherwise seek advice from a doctor if the pain persists.
are you looking for a practice that can help your child be the BEST they can be?

Choosing the right school St Catherine’s Catholic College Choosing a school which is the right fit for your child can be a daunting experience. A great place to start, is to make sure the core principles of the school match your own personal beliefs. At St Catherine’s Catholic College, (SCCC), its core values are based around excellence, justice, compassion and community. • Strive to be the best that you can be for the good of others.
• Be responsible in working toward peace and justice. • Be considerate and kind to others. • Be inclusive, tolerant, welcoming and respectful
amongst your community.
These values underpin the policies and practices of SCCC, which have arisen from a depth of history and religion. The school was established in 1925, when the Bowen parish priest, Father Walsh, applied to the Mother Superior of the Townsville Convent for a community of Sisters of Mercy to establish a school in the flourishing town of Proserpine. The Sisters responded, and with the help of the local community, enough money was raised to erect a school and convent. A large crowd witnessed the blessing and opening of the convent and school in April 1925 with an enrolment of 60 pupils. The school was originally named Our Lady’s Convent School, where the Sisters of Mercy taught their Catholic religion as well as helping the students attain a level of education that would assist them to make a worthy contribution to their world. 70 www.corelife.com.au
The values of the Sisters of Mercy and Ignatian spirituality are studied by students today, who learn how to embed them in their actions and ways of interacting with others. St Catherine’s Catholic College has three precincts across two campus locations. Mercy Campus on Marathon Street is an early years campus for prep to year three. It is the original school site established in 1925. Its dedicated early years teachers are focused on providing the essential elements for a successful education, including solid literacy and numeracy. Loyola Campus and Manresa Campus are located at the senior campus of SCCC on Renwick Road. This modern campus was opened in 2012 with contemporary learning spaces, new facilities and specialist equipment. Loyola provides an engaging education for upper primary students, years four to six. Students have the opportunity to participate in social justice groups such as Mini Vinnies, plus can travel to Mackay and Townsville to take part in literature and arts festivals. Manresa Campus caters for years seven to ten, with a vision of catering up to year twelve by 2017, students of Manresa have the opportunity to study a diverse range of subjects which are supplemented by extensive extracurricular opportunities. Students are also provided support through the College’s Pastoral Care Program, which is facilitated by a Pastoral Care Coordinator in each year level. To provide a quality learning environment, it is necessary for Catholic schools to implement a reasonable fee structure to cover the shortfall between the costs of running a school and government funding. No child will be refused enrolment due to financial hardship and significant fee discounts are available for parents who hold Australian Government Health Care or Pensioner Concession care cards.
As an emerging Catholic secondary college, St Catherine’s Catholic College offers the benefits of an intimate, supportive and friendly environment within a larger college context which provides great opportunity.
“We are a Catholic college which welcomes families from all backgrounds and cultures who support our values.

ways to detox for the whole family I’m sure a lot of us ate a little too much over the holidays and it’s time to debloat. Here are some safe and healthy ways for the whole family, to clear the body of all the sugar and excess food they might have consumed. SLOW AND STEADY… A detox reaction indicates toxins are being removed from the body faster than the main organs of elimination (bowels, liver, and kidneys) can comfortably excrete. Eg: Symptoms such as a runny nose, headache, sore throat, cough, skin irritation, sweating, or an exacerbation of pre-existing symptoms. All of which can slow down the healing process. • Raw fruits, organic if possible. CAUTION!! Eat fruit in moderation, we don’t want to add even more sugars. • Eat lots of vegetables which are also full of fibre. • Another smart choice is nuts and seeds (if tolerated). They are high in fat but they do have lots of fibre. Eat them raw, without all the oils and salts. • Eat non-gluten grains and grain free pastas • Avoid starchy vegetables, high carbohydrates and gluten products. All those carbs=sugar • Insure hydration and increase liquids to flush toxins. • Move the bowels at least 1-3 times a day. • Soak in Food Grade Epsom Salt Bath for 20mins 2-3 times a week NEED MORE SUPPORT? Spot all 5 differences
Top 5 skills for your child to learn before they start school
It’s natural to feel anxious before your child starts school. Will they cope? Will they get picked on? Will they keep up with the learning? It’s a scary and exciting time for both parent and child, but there are some things you can do to make the transition easier.
How to write their name
Learning the alphabet is a great start, and if your child is recognizing individual letters, then they are well on their way. If a child can write and recognise their own name, it’s a great head start for school, as they will begin to identify with items in the classroom that belong to them.
Dress and feed themselves
There may not always be a teacher nearby when a shoe needs to go back on, or a jacket needs zipping up. Likewise with unwrapping a piece of cheese or unpeeling a banana. If you are confident that they can handle these tasks, then there will be less tears and frustration when they are on their own.
Playing make-believe
Encouraging the use of imagination is a big part of learning and development. They will need to call on this skill for writing stories and even problem-solving. You can help them to do this by making up bed time
stories for them and encouraging them to add in their own chapters.
Learning to use a computer
Five years old seems too young to be using a computer, but it’s amazing how quickly children grasp technology when they are raised with it. Computers feature in most classrooms, so if your child is comfortable with the concept of a computer, knows how to navigate it and knows what it is for and what it can do, (in a basic sense), it will help them to understand any learning that may be presented on a computer.
Manners and sensitivity
A child who is constantly in trouble with the teacher won’t be able to learn as well as a well behaved child. Basic manners and a sense of right from wrong will go a long way. Teach them to share, wait their turn, and to be nice. This will help them to make friends, which will then turn, school into a positive and fun environment. It’s important to remember that every child learns at their own pace and they all have different skills and attributes. So, if your child hasn’t mastered all or any of these, it’s not a cause for concern, more of a talking point you can discuss with their new teacher.
