From the

editor I

would like to start by thanking all of the amazing characters within the community I have had the privilege and opportunity to meet and get to know over the past several months. Also a huge thank you to all of the amazing businesses who have enabled us to not only bring Byron Life to these pages, but literally to life as well. It is this collaboration we are creating which allows us to bring the stories behind the amazing characters within our community, onto the pages in front of you.

Having met Tahlia during the production of her feature for the cover of our June/July edition of Byron Life, I like to think I have made a new friend.

Down to business. How has your winter been going so far? Cold enough for you? Or have you had colder? Or is it the coldest winter you have ever experienced to date? I have found this answer varies slightly depending on what pocket of this beautiful countryside you are lucky enough to call home.

Ok, so I like a challenge. I enter the Sulis Salon, where Talhlia welcomed me with the loveliest of smiles and friendliest of greetings.

The highlight for myself this winter so far took place between Julian Rocks and Wategos on a small sailing trimaran. I was lucky enough to have shared the moment with my new father-in-law Tony and my beautiful little sistersin-law Bayla and Remi. The girls were sharing their incredible whale songs and whisperings trying to entice an encounter with our majestic visitors. Just when we thought it was time to head in for the day their songs and whispers paid off! From the deep blue, three amazingly incredible Humpback Whales surfaced, very briefly, within 10-20m of us. The look on the Bayla and Remy’s faces was what it all is truly all about. Haircut experience:

Being a hairdresser Tahlia naturally asked where I got my haircut. I replied accordingly. After she had finished laughing at me and got her breath back, she insisted I come and see what getting a haircut at Sulis was like and that she felt sorry for my wife.

It’s all going ok but I am thinking, “What have I got myself into?” Next; Aveda tea. This is nothing like I remembered when getting a haircut before. But hey, lets go with it. Then the board meeting began in regards to the style of my haircut and how it can suit my lifestyle. And here I was thinking it was up to the hairdresser as to how I look when I walk out after they were done with me. Now I am led to a private candle-lit shampoo room for a wash and scalp massage. Then I’m escorted back to my chair where the magic is about to be made. Before the scissors are even seen, I am offered a beer or champagne. Ok, is this is a joke? Has my wife stitched me up? Something is not right here.

Who knew getting a haircut could be an experience

But it wasn’t a joke. it was all legit! Tahlia has seriously changed my understanding of what it can be like to get a haircut.

I am a bit of the (not proud of it but...) ‘stereotypical kind of bloke’ that hasn’t ever really got excited about the prospect of a haircut. I can literally count on both hands over the past 20 years the battles of the hairdresser’s scissors verses my head. For the majority of these times a haircut consisted of me shaving my own head, once it had annoyed me enough, with clippers.

I cannot thank Tahlia and the ladies at Sulis enough for this amazing experience and taking the time to try and fix the mess that lives upon the top of my head. Most of all I need to thank them for putting up with my silly sense of humour.

Keep living, loving and enjoy Byron Life.

and the

BOOMERANG Festival T

he Boomerang Festival is a modern-day corroboree at the Byron Bluesfest site. An annual fixture on the Byron Shire calendar since its 2013 birth, the festival incorporates the coming together of Indigenous groups in the sharing of culture, music, dance; visual arts programs and cultural workshops, while facilitating social forums, industry and educational gatherings. In a region already blessed with the Story by nurturing of cultural aspirations, the Ian Browne Boomerang Festival also helps boost the region’s economy in areas of tourism expenditure and employment, while providing a platform to connect local industry aspiration. The Boomerang Festival is the vision of Business Partner MR Peter Noble OAM and the creative of Rhoda Roberts. A proud Widjabul lady of the Bundjalung Nation, Boomerang Festival organiser Rhoda Roberts’ rich cultural journey has included founding and directing the Dreaming Festivals from 1995-2009, and as a speaker and performer in theatre, film, television and radio. Rhoda is well-respected as the producer and journalist of a number of SBS and NITV programs. How does the Boomerang Festival allow young indigenous people to explore identity? This type of gathering is vital for the next generation to engage with a program that combines local knowledge, tradition, rituals and culture with the custodians, providing the freedom and voice to connect through embracing the social, cultural and the spiritual aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the rich traditional lives and contemporary practices of other world cultures. Our opening ceremony is an accessible way for young people and families to have a unique experience based on ritual, chants rhythms and dance, allowing all people to actually get involved. Considering the past history of various legislations forbidding the continuance of cultural gatherings, many young people have not had the opportunity and benefit of involvement with dance and corroboree across cultural practice. Boomerang is about revitalisation and rekindling that provides an opportunity for intergenerational involvement that acknowledges the ever-adapting cultures of first peoples, and making ceremony relevant and appropriate for our people in the 21st century. In what way does Boomerang invite non-indigenous Australians to feel welcomed into Aboriginal knowledge systems? The Festival provides a rare privilege and a unique opportunity to personally witness and be involved with real reconciliation, and a genuine cultural exchange of ideas, philosophy, dance, film, conversations and music across a two-way interchange. Boomerang 10 www.byronlifemag.com

designs and builds a beautiful, intimate and culturally safe environment for our audiences to be included in an artist-to-audience shared participatory experience. For you personally, what is the most satisfying aspect of the Boomerang Festival? With the passing of many knowledge keepers, custodians and elders, invaluable elements of the complexities and depth of culture and protocol are being lost. Professional artists working in the reinvigoration and reclamation of our cultural knowledge, ensure our ancient culture survives and continues to be relevant for future generations. Boomerang Festival offers a national leadership and development platform required to enhance Indigenous artistic and cultural practices. A rare privilege and a unique opportunity to personally witness and be involved with real reconciliation on country. The Boomerang Festival is a platform for Aboriginal professionals, across all art forms, presenting over 130 First Nation’s performances by 225 artists from 70 clan groups over four days. The festival has resulted in tangible economic benefit for local artisans and contributed to positive future growth for the arts and cultural communities, including Indigenous, regional business, commerce and the wider tourism industry. What drives you to further build upon the Boomerang Festival ? The Boomerang Festival has the desired aim of ending the disparity in life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australia by providing an annual creative event that builds strong partnerships and showcases Aboriginal peoples to their advantage, quite simply their culture. We are committed to maintaining positive involvement of custodians, community elders, performers and artists. It is essential to continue to acknowledge Indigenous protocol and the complexities surrounding the history and kinship structure of the country’s many Indigenous nations and language groups, as well as those from international destinations. The festival works closely regarding protocol and representation with the Local Arakwal Corporation and Native Title custodians, along with Tweed Shire’s Aboriginal Project officer through reclamation projects and cross promotion of events. In 2014, Boomerang was nominated for various tourism and event awards. Contextualising Indigenous work nationally and internationally is problematic for mainstream presentations. I intend to develop, deliver, and sustain Boomerang Festival, on Bundjalung country in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

Community funded and focused is the driving force behind BayFM. It’s about giving “Power to the People”.

eople power comes from having an independent radio station where community voices can freely express a range of views without the influence of media moguls.

In a world of ‘fake news’ and corporate dominance of mainstream media, BayFM provides an independent voice to empower people as well as round the clock, tailor-made entertainment from volunteer presenters for your listening pleasure. A subscription represents so much more than just assisting with the running costs of the station. Your subscription helps to build a resilient community. It’s also a gesture of thanks to the dedicated volunteers, who show up everyday to share their passion for radio with YOU. Over a quarter of a century ago an idea to start a community radio station was conceived. ‘Keeping BayFM Afloat’ is the ongoing challenge for the volunteer management committee. With no government or corporate funding, the community has always been asked for financial assistance. This year’s Radiothon, on air from 11th to 25th August, honours the beautiful Great Barrier Reef and our oceans. While we’re taught to respect the power of the sea, many sadly treat it as a liquid garbage bin and our oceans are filling up with plastic pollution. During the Radiothon, BayFM is offering a major prize of a $4,000 Travel Voucher with the indie traveller in mind – maybe a trip to explore the underworld before it’s too late! There’s more major prizes to be announced, including prizes for online subscribers and for sharing Facebook posts.

For less than a cup of coffee per week (in your re-usable cup of course!) your subscription will continue to empower the activists, environmentalists, free thinkers and artists who are given a voice on air. Empower your community by subscribing now at bayfm.org and share BayFM’s Facebook Posts during Radiothon to support your independent local radio. Next time you ask yourself why should I help fund BayFM? Think Power to the People!

hile most teenagers are busy discovering themselves and working out where they fit into society, Holley Somerville Knott is starting global movements, signing record deals and manufacturing environmentally friendly products. At just 14-years-old, Holley is still a regular teenage girl. She loves the beach, skate boarding, sketching, drumming and slam-poetry. She is also an extremely driven individual, 100% dedicated to what she sets her mind to.

A few years ago Holley watched the movie, ‘Rise of the Eco Warriors’ and was devastated to see the terrible destruction palm oil causes, killing thousands of Orangutans when their rainforests are cut down to make way for the palm oil crop which is in a lot of packaged food, cosmetic products and the main ingredient for soap. Since then, through her online platform ‘Tell Someone Who Cares’ (tellsomeonewhocares.org) Holley has decided to do something about it. She works alongside the Dayak people of Borneo to produce an environmentally sustainable alternative to Palm Oil called Illipe Butter. The switch to Illipe Butter maintains local jobs, is great for your skin and great for the planet. Holley ships the raw product of Illipe Butter to Australia from the Borneo Rainforest. She then works with different contract manufacturers to create a creamy rich blend of coconut, Illipe and macadamia oil with essential oils for scent. The final product is then sent directly to Holley so she can sell the soap on her online shop and website. More recently, Holley has spread her wings further. She has secured two scholarships (one with Layne Beachley Foundation), spoken at the world’s largest Happiness Conference and was a NSW Young Achievers finalist. She has also been ‘discovered’ by Lucky Boy, a Byron Bay 12 www.byronlifemag.com

Fundamentally, though, Holley wants to use her website ‘Tell Someone Who Cares’ as a global connection centre for youth. “I want it to be a place where we connect and stand as one voice for the planet. A place where we feel part of a community creating change.” With this in mind Holley has created RAD Days (Rainforest Action Days) where schools and businesses can raise money for rainforests. Anyone can host a RAD day, all you need to do is download a poster from her website and pick a day. Everyone wears green and brings along a gold coin, taking photos and videos, uploading them to Instagram and Facebook. Holley is a truly inspirational character and savvy business woman. If you would like to connect with Holley and volunteer your time to work alongside her she would love to hear from you.

The free fall of life!

Betti Knott

W

hen Managing Editor of Byron Life Magazine, Nik Torti, was asked to take a free skydive and write about it for the magazine, he decided he would rather give it to someone else instead. Someone from the community that truly deserved it. The rest of the team thought Nik was scared, but he assured us that he had skydived before and genuinely thought the experience would be worth more (and provide better reading) to a deserving volunteer from the community. Nik put it out there on Facebook and amongst his social networks, looking for a suitable candidate. So when 66-year-old retiree, Betti, came forward saying it sounded like an “intriguing opportunity” and she “just had to do it!” We knew we’d found the lady for the job! Betti was born in Key West, Florida, in the USA, a tiny island off the coast of Florida and very close to Cuba. She retired in 2016 after a career working for NGO’s such as the St Vincent de Paul Society in the USA and Australia, and moved to picturesque Bangalow 9 months ago. More recently Betti has overcome cancer which she says changed her life attitudes substantially. “Life is much more precious to me now and I strive to live every day to the fullest. I no longer stress about things that really don’t matter or that I can’t do anything about. I seek joy and fulfillment in all that I do.”

“Skydiving was exhilarating,” says Betti, “Joe, the instructor, did a brilliant job getting me out of the plane and on the ground safely. Seeing Cape Byron from that angle was breathtaking. I felt completely safe and no, it was not as scary as I thought it would be. I had a great time.”

It must be this ‘live for the moment attitude’ that compelled Betti to jump out of a plane at the age of 66. Fortunately, she couldn’t have been in safer hands than with Skydive Australia.

Thanks to our Managing Editor Nik, the delightful Betti got an opportunity to do something she may never have had the opportunity to do. Well done Nik, although, we still think you were a little scared!

RESHMAI KNOX: BYRON BLU SWIMWEAR

A fashionable future

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 14 of 72

COVERSTORY

H

er designs are fresh, fun and a little flirty. They are a celebration of the body in its natural state and embrace function and form. So how did Reshmai Knox break into the competitive market of swimwear fashion and design? She didn’t take ‘No’ for an answer. Reshmai’s example in business is one which many successful people can relate to. She didn’t identify her talent until later in life but discovered she had been doing it all along. “Growing up in Byron you’re constantly surrounded by swimwear. It’s a part of life. I found I was constantly critiquing the cut and style of what I would see, wanting to enhance what a person was wearing to better suit their unique shape.” “The Byron lifestyle is about natural beauty in its simplicity, embracing an active lifestyle and exuding a confidence which comes from movement. You wouldn’t cover the beauty of nature with ruffles and shapes, so why do that to your body? It’s about feeling confident in your own skin and feeling great, not covering up. That’s what inspired me to finally put pen to paper and turn my passion into a business,” she said. After growing up in Byron, Reshmai went to university in Brisbane to study a Bachelor of Business Management specialising in Japanese. After graduation, she moved to Melbourne and was pregnant with her first child, Amelie, now nine years old. She also has a son, Deon, who is seven. Soon after Amelie’s arrival into the world, Reshmai missed the lifestyle she loved when living in Byron and decided she had to move back home. “I’m the kind of girl who needs to go for a walk or a jog each day to awaken my mind and soul. I need to be around water, so after I’ve finished a run, I’ll always go and jump in the water. It’s something simple to crave but I really missed that in Melbourne. When I jog I actually love it when it’s overcast, very cold or raining because nobody is around. I can be completely on my own and not pick up on everyone else’s energy around me. It’s the best feeling and I feel so liberated afterwards.” Launching into business wasn’t an easy road for Reshmai to travel. She heard ‘No’ more often that she could count and learned some tough lessons along the way. “It was a crazy, emotional rollercoaster. Being such a positive person, I wasn’t used to hearing ‘No’ so often, but it was something I had to overcome. It may have been my naivety that got me through, despite someone saying no, I kept trying. Even when they laughed at me.” “No one holds your hand, you have to fight for what you want. Eventually after a lot of rejection, I managed to break through. At the start manufacturers wouldn’t give me the time of day, now they call me. Instead of me begging them to give me a chance, I am now in a position to negotiate what I want. It’s something I’m really proud of,” she said.

Reshmai’s business, Byron Blu Swimwear, is beginning to take the fashion world by storm. She is making inroads into large online shopping platforms in the UK, and is possibly making an appearance at the Paris Fashion Week. “This industry is fast-paced and ever evolving. If I am not constantly looking at magazines and researching my market and designs then I will fall behind. I am a very lively person and accepting of many different personalities but when it comes to my business I like to be more reserved with the research and development stages. I prefer to observe and take in what I see and translate the influences I see into my designs very quietly. I choose to do the business on my own and take a more insular approach with it otherwise I find myself replicating what is already in the market.” “People often give advice based on what they have already experienced and seen but I don’t want that input. I want Byron Blu Swimwear designs to be new, yet on trend.” “As a designer I always get asked the same question, ‘what inspires you?’ We are all inspired by certain things and nobody’s life is the same. Everyone has their own unique journey, we all have different influences that make us project our thoughts and ideas in different perspectives.” “So what inspires me most? Put simply, my life from since I remember. The rest of my inspiration is derived from my life so far and it’s been beautiful. I am grateful for everything that has led me to here.” You can view Reshmai’s unique swimwear collection online at byronblubikini.com.au.

“I am also proud of being able to prioritise my time effectively. I now know who to respond to and what opportunities I should invest my time in. I often feel like I am three different people! One minute I am taking a call from manufacturing then the next minute I get back to having a conversation with my son and daughter about why we cannot take our new kitten for school drop-off and pick-ups. Then I will get a call regarding promotion, then a call from my younger sister for relationship advice and then my phone rings again... It’s constant and I thrive in it. I absolutely love my life. My car is like my second office. I am always on the run and have everything in there.”

Simmone Reaney PARADISO BEAUTY STUDIO A bit of beauty can bring happiness, but happiness will always bring beauty. Owner of Paradiso Beauty Studio, Simmone Reaney, takes this philosophy to work each day. “Once you have found that one career you absolutely love, there is nothing more beautiful. I’ve never woken up with that dread of going to work. My clients make my career a passion and I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for making this journey a true blessing. Their appreciation of my knowledge and commitment to help them, whether aesthetic or emotional, makes every day shine,” she said. Since discovering the colourful wonders of lipstick and nail polish, beauty has since been a passion for Simmone. Growing up in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Simmone completed her diploma in beauty which flamed the desire to own her own business. She and husband, Marty, moved to Byron Bay 10 years ago for his building business and also to provide a desirable lifestyle for their three daughters. Simmone purchased Paradiso Beauty Studio just over seven years ago and hasn’t looked back. “My life are my three daughters, Bella (16), Emily (13) and Sofi (10), but Paradiso feels like my fourth child. It requires as much TLC!

“I absolutely love Byron Bay, the people here are so accepting with no prejudice. My family and I live in Bangalow and adore the lifestyle,” she said. A tragedy on the soccer field two years ago made Simmone take stock of what was important in her life, a thought process which has led to her studying to complete a degree in cosmetic nursing. “I’ve always enjoyed soccer but almost two years I broke my back during a game. The shock made me question my beliefs and what was important to me. While beauty is my passion, I wanted to offer more to my clients, so I enrolled in university to complete my cosmetic nursing degree. I have a month left before I graduate and I pride myself in having that extra knowledge to educate clients with,” she said. When she’s not working, Simmone still straps on the boots and takes to the field with the family in tow. “During the winter I play for the Bangalow Bluedogs. It is a bit of an effort as the whole family plays, so coordinating start times for everyone can be trying some mornings!” For a comprehensive array of beauty services, visit Paradiso Beauty Studio on Middleton Street, for advice and care for face and body.

Narelle McDonald HEALTHY LIVING SPACES

H

ome is most certainly where the heart is. It protects us, keeps us sheltered and provides priceless memories. But would you know if your home was making you and your family unwell? Headaches, tiredness, respiratory issues and difficulty sleeping are quite often symptoms we ignore, blaming them on being overworked or stressed. But as building biologist, Narelle McDonald explains, the solution may lie within the walls of your home. “There are many elements in a building that can affect your quality of life, your physical health and your emotional wellbeing. Our homes are living organisms and building biologists refer to them as our third skin”. “On average we spend about 90% of our time indoors. An important element in creating a healthy home is recognizing that just because a product is common doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe. There is often a misconception that if it’s on a supermarket shelf, it’s been thoroughly tested. That however is not the reality,” Narelle said. Narelle is a qualified Building Biologist and Feng Shui consultant. She completed her initial studies in both subjects with the Australian College of Environmental Studies (ACES), after experiencing first-hand how a living situation can play havoc on your health. “My first experience of living in a sick building was in London. It was a brand new, tightly sealed apartment. The furnishings were all brand new including the mattress and couches. Within weeks of moving in I developed chronic respiratory and sinus issues that doctors were at a loss to treat. The symptoms didn’t clear up until I moved out. “Essentially I had been living in a tightly sealed toxic soup of chemicals. At the time, not once did I consider my symptoms could be related to where I had chosen to live. “As a mother of two children, their overall health is extremely important to me. I was overwhelmed when I initially began studying building biology and realized the sheer amount of chemicals and environmental toxins our children are exposed to today, more so now than any other time in history. We can’t control everything but we can control our own home environments,” she said. Working with a building biologist like Narelle gives individuals the tools to create healthy environments and an understanding of how to make better consumer choices. Each day brings fresh opportunities to explore different options and choices to create a home that will support and nourish you today and in the future. Dean Gray TILES ON BYRON “She’s the glue that holds it all together.”

S

haring a home and business can be tough, but as Dean Gray and Zia Bailey have discovered, the rewards outweigh the challenges.

“I always knew she was amazing, but seeing how hard she works for our business has just opened my eyes further to how great she really is,” Dean said. “She’s the brains and I’m the brawn. I couldn’t be doing it without her.” The couple are the owner/operators of Tiles On Byron which opened earlier this year in March. Dean started tiling shortly after leaving school and has grown to love the industry. “I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do when I left school. A mate of mine was an apprentice chippie and his tiler needed a labourer. I’ve been doing it ever since, around 14 years,” he said. He and Zia are both locals and grew up on the same street. “We’ve known each other pretty much forever but we’ve been together for four years now,” Zia said. The couple started to talk about the possibility of starting their own business out of the frustrations Dean experienced as a tiler. “There was a need locally for a supply and install service, one business that could offer the entire bathroom package from showroom to install. This ensures all the parts go together without complication, ultimately saving the client time and money,” he said. “Often as a tiler we are asked to install tiles which simply do not work in a chosen area, or will create problems later down the track. With my experience I can offer advice from the point of sale on which pattern will work best in a chosen area, how to save money on the tiles and how to achieve unique looks with

coloured grout and different pattern combinations.

“That’s our biggest difference. I’m upfront and honest with people from the start about what is and isn’t achievable, to avoid disappointment down the track. I lay tiles every day, so I know what works and what doesn’t. I can show them how to save money by using different placement methods and offer advice on which materials work best in given environments.” As well as providing sales and service to retail clients, Tiles On Byron also provide a range of tools and equipment for trades. Dean runs a group of seven tilers, to offer a complete service from sale to installation. Chris Hanley OAM

FIRST NATIONAL BYRON BAY

If you could pen your life into pages and dictate the course of your future through words, how would you begin your next chapter?

O

ne man who has embraced his creativity has been richly rewarded for his contribution to society. Awarded an OAM for service to literature and Indigenous education, Chris Hanley has shown that you don’t need to ‘pick a path’ when choosing between success and fulfillment. Chris first admired the charm of Byron’s shoreline when he discovered surfing. Growing up in Sydney, he spent holidays travelling up the coast in pursuit of good times and relaxed vibes. Passionate about words, he studied Australian literature at university. Little did he know the positive impact he would later have on aspiring writers across Australia. He launched into real estate in his 20s while in Sydney. Seeking an environment to pursue literature, he moved to Byron Bay in 1985, where the appeal of a creative community beckoned. He set up a small studio and followed his heart, writing short stories, which led to setting up the Northern Rivers Writers' Centre. From there, an idea blossomed to create an event where writers could collaborate and mingle. Summoning inspiration from events he had attended across the globe as well as help from equally dedicated lovers of literature, Chris organised the first Byron Bay Writer’s Festival, an event which evolved to become the largest of its kind in Australia. He chaired the festival from its inception until last year, when he retired, stating, "Unlike politicians and sportsmen, I think you should remove yourself from an organisation at its best.” It was for his dedication to literature and to Indigenous education that Chris 20 www.byronlifemag.com

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 20 of 72

was recently awarded two prestigious honours as Byron Shire’s Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day awards, as well as an Order Of Australia Medal (OAM), which will be presented to Chris at Government House in September. Despite this success, the early years of the festival were tough and it took the grit and determination of the founding organisers just to ensure its early survival. Due to the economic necessity to support his young family, Chris reentered the property profession more than 20 years ago, building a successful business career while still dedicating his heart and soul to literature. “I joined First National 22 years ago and partnered with previous owner, Margaret Robertson for 10 years before her retirement. I now co-own the business with four other directors. I would have left 20 years ago if the experience didn’t nourish my soul.” Chris’s business expertise has been sought after by organisations throughout Australia, who have engaged him for workplace culture training and public speaking. Chris has also mentored young CEOs for more than a decade and believes his business philosophy is simple. “My focus for the past two decades has been to find and keep good people. My philosophy is that you can find good people and teach them to do anything, but you can’t find people and teach them to be good. If you treat your people well and build a positive culture, they will stay,” he said. According to author Lewis Carroll, every story has a moral, you just need to be clever enough to find it. You don’t need to search hard to find one in the novel of Chris Hanley. Which leads to the question, within the pages of your own life, what will yours be?

HOMEPROPERTY&GARDEN

The future starts now How do you envisage our homes looking in the future? Do you think they will be bigger, smaller, and self-sufficient? It’s a question which industry experts, such as architects and town planners, ask themselves on a regular basis, but it may also be one worth consideration for the average home owner too. More often we hear about how Australia is in the grips of a housing affordability crisis. This is a topic dear to our heart here in the Northern Rivers, as our community knows better than most others how much the cost of owning a home can increase over a seemingly short period of time. The most vulnerable are our youth and our elderly, those not at their peak income earning age who may struggle to even rent a home, let alone own one. This poses an interesting thought to every home owner, as to how they can help. One solution is the rise of multigenerational living, where you have generations of the same family living under one roof. Common in many cultures but not so much so here in Australia, this living arrangement is on the rise. The most commonly reported negative to multigenerational living is the reduced lack of privacy. And this is what will soon influence our design decisions going forward. Designing a universal home for all ages can reap both economical and societal rewards. Having stand-alone apartments on the end of a home, or studios away from the main house, can provide a separate living area in a different part of the property. This can provide an affordable solution for relatives, students or people seeking cheaper accommodation without constantly encroaching on each other’s privacy. This simple change in design to incorporate an additional stand-alone apartment can increase an individual’s income while providing a more affordable living solution for those in need, potentially reducing homelessness.

Forty Winks Ballina

Luke Albertini Store Manager

How was your sleep last night? If you’re fanatically swigging away at your second morning coffee wondering how you will make it through the day, we’ll assume that you didn’t get a great night’s sleep. So what have you tried so far to improve your sleep quality? If you’ve ditched the evening caffeine, switched the technology off an hour before bedtime, slipped some lavender under your pillow and even considered chemical help from your doctor, maybe you’re searching for your slumber solution in all the wrong places.

bedding accessories and furniture to ensure that the bedroom becomes a sanctuary, both in comfort and style. “The mattress is the most important aspect in terms of delivering whole body health. Not only is sleep incredibly important to a person’s wellbeing, but also the support and posture their body receives while sleeping to alleviate pain.

Quite simply, if your mattress isn’t delivering you the sleep you desire, it’s time to find the right mattress for you. Manager of Forty Winks Ballina, Luke Albertini, explains how buying a good mattress is making a long-term investment in your health.

“The Serta brand is exclusive to Forty Winks and offers superior sleep quality. The Serta Perfect Sleeper® range has been specifically designed to combat the five most common sleep problems, and even comes with 90-day Comfort Assurance, to ensure customers are absolutely satisfied with their sleep investment. Serta is made in Australia to a high standard also, which is a great feeling to know that our business supports locally made industry,” Luke said.

“People will often look for quick-fixes to aid their broken sleep, but without a comfortable mattress, these won’t work. A good mattress is quite literally the foundation of a good night’s sleep.

For those seeking the very best, Forty Winks Ballina offer prestige and luxury ranges which represent the ultimate in sleeping luxury, and they encourage you and your family to come into store and try these ranges for yourself.

“Our team are trained in matching each individual with their perfect sleep solution. We take time with each customer to find the right bed for them by asking questions about their sleep quality, from aches and pains to back problems and partner disturbance. “We encourage our customers to take their time when searching for their dream bed. Ideally, it can take three or four hours to consider all of the options, and we recommend someone lay on a bed for at least 10 minutes to see how it feels after their body has warmed the material underneath. “We are happy to guide them through this process and cater a package to best suit their budget. A good mattress is picked on how it feels, not its price tag, so if a cheaper mattress feels better to a customer, we will recommend that one over a more expensive one to ensure the customer is thrilled with their purchase,” Luke said. The second-most important factor in achieving great sleep is the pillow you sleep on. Often overlooked, a supportive pillow can play a large part in eliminating neck and back pain. “Ideally, a pillow should be chosen with the mattress you will be sleeping on. So if you are coming in to find the perfect mattress, don’t forget to try out a range of pillows at the same time. This will ensure the right pillow to suit your new mattress,” Luke said.

Designing an inspiring room is like telling a good story. First you need an interesting mix of characters, then an engaging plot and finally, a fabulous setting to create the mood.

their individual talents, uniting the expert eye of the fashion designer with the customer-facing charisma of a salon owner and the Cactus Hill Project was born.

It is this process that Leanne and Jo from the Cactus Hill Project in Mullumbimby use to create their unique collections and vignettes in their homewares store. Every handpicked item has its own story and each carefully styled setting creates an emotion through colour, texture, design and craftsmanship.

Byron Life Magazine sat down with Leanne and Jo to get the low-down on their top tips for styling your home into a unique and individual space.

They are inspired by their dual love for the modern sophistication of Scandinavian design and the authentic originality of handcrafted ethnic treasures. They source furniture, lighting and décor from Danish design studios, and team them with hand woven rugs, cushions and earthy ceramics from ethical and sustainable sources. Looking around their shop you can see this philosophy in play. Signature handcrafted pieces; Baskets made by the hands of a mother in Zimbabwe to carry water for her family and metal lights sourced from artisans in India are styled with the clean design lines of a Danish designed chair or sofa. Leanne and Jo moved to Mullumbimby looking for a sea change. Before that, Leanne had a high-profile career in fashion and Jo owned her own hair salon in Sydney. When the corner shop in Mullum became vacant, they couldn’t resist the opportunity to bring together

5 TOP TIPS: 1. Create a colour palette and then buy pieces that work within your

palette. We use black, white and natural as a base to all our colour palettes and then add colours to create different themes throughout the store

2. Mix modern clean surfaces with natural earthy textures to create your own individual style.

3. If you are on a budget, invest in one or two designer pieces that you love and are timeless and style them with affordable trend pieces.

4. Lighting creates sculptural shadows and unique moods. Use an

oversized pendant or a group of three small pendants to make a statement. Use lamps instead of overhead lighting to soften a room

5. Buy sustainable, ethically sourced homewares to support global artisans and buy local to support your local community.

at home with...

Jo & Steve

Byron Life Magazine met with Jo and Steve, two local residents who have just spent the year living in a shipping container while building their dream home from scratch on the plot next door. With no hot water and no bathroom it was far from glamourous, but well worth the journey.

“From this experience, we knew we needed to design the house around the northerly aspect,” says Steve. “This was important to us not only for comfort and budget but also in consideration of the environment.”

“Our son, Kai, lived in a converted bus next door and helped with the build.” Said Jo, “It was a family affair and has created some amazing memories.”

Jo and Steve found designing their own home a liberating experience. They could control the budget, work with their environment and focus on certain features. They had the freedom to design their home to their own criteria.

Veteran renovators, Jo and Steve, had been longing to bring their years of experience into a fresh build, with a desire to create an entertainers paradise for their adult children and growing family to enjoy. Steve has spent twenty years in the building industry, working as a carpenter and owning a local kitchen fit-out business. These qualifications were a huge advantage when sourcing local materials and knowing which trades he needed, when to book them in and how to project-manage for the best price. Jo, who is a skillful renovator, brings a love of design to the project, sourcing materials and managing many areas of the build. For them, the planning process is the most important part: “Plan, plan, plan.” Steve advises, “It’s the easiest part but also the most important part of the build!” With this in mind, the couple decided to do a test-run of their dream home the year before by building a one bedroom cabin with a similar design on the same plot. This is where their daughter Lily and her family now live. 28 www.byronlifemag.com

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 28 of 72

“For us,” says Jo, “our major motivations were creating the perfect environment for entertaining our family and friends. We chose to build the entire house around the swimming-pool, making it the social focus for people to gather. We also have an extra-large kitchen, butler’s pantry and oversize island bench, creating an amazing area for entertaining and an ideal space for our daughter who is a chef” Standing proudly by their completed house, the couple are elated to have achieved their goal. It has taken many long days and nights and less than ideal living conditions. There were days when the progress was so slow they thought they would never get there. But they did! And for Jo and Steve, a few of the important milestones include watching the pool being filled and the completion of the roof which meant they were 30% there. Another highlight was sharing the experience with their family and watching their two year old grandson, Ashton, get involved. “Oh, and having the hot water turned on,” says Jo, “that first hot shower was amazing!”

JO AND STEVE’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN HOME 1. Make sure you have a good sense of prices and costs to stay within your budget. Get quotes for the job not by the hour. Research and shop around for materials.

2. When you are in the design stages think about where the sun

is going to be at different times of the day, take advantage of the elements.

3. Be prepared for some long hard days and months, when you think it can’t get any harder, it will!

4. Plan, plan, plan! We wish we put more thought into the interior

design whilst considering dimensions of the house, as it was difficult to purchase certain items we desired to fit the spaces that we built.

5. Stay focused, but try to have a life too!

he detailed print on the top side is made of durable cotton canvas, while the base is made of a waterproof canvas so you can lay it on any surface. You will stay dry from the damp grass, clean from the dusty terrain and comfortable from the hard ground. Sharnee Thorpe, the creative mind behind Wandering Folk, treasures well-made products and designs each print by hand. Coming from a background in textile design, Sharnee has worked alongside a number of Australian and international fashion labels, hand painting artwork for their collections and refining her understanding of fabric. “The idea of our picnic rugs was born on a rainy road trip to the south coast,” explains Sharnee. “Camping in the rain is never fun especially when you don’t have anything dry to sit on. It was then we realised we wanted to create something that was very durable, high quality yet still ascetically pleasing.” So, the idea of the Wondering Folk Picnic Rug was born and Sharnee knew exactly whom she was designing it for. “Wandering Folk is a picnic rug that embodies a lifestyle,” says Sharnee. “It is for people who are always off exploring, chasing waterfalls, or picnicking somewhere out in nature.”

For the Wandering Folk it is all about encouraging people to get outside and explore, feel alive amongst nature, yet comfortable camping in the bush by bringing along a little bit of luxury with one of their amazing picnic rugs. The picnic rugs have many uses, they are the perfect accessory for a camping trip, easy to take along to a picnic in the park, a ‘must have’ rug for the back of the car and make a great gift. Wandering Folk picnic rugs come in four different coloured prints and have their own woven strap so you can roll up your picnic rug and carry it with you wherever you roam. Meet

your Agent From

First National Byron Bay

Luke Elwin Many real estate agents will say that they bend over backwards for their clients, but as a former yoga teacher, Luke Elwin is one of the few who could back that promise up in a literal sense. Luke’s love-affair with Byron Bay began as a 12 year old, when his older sister, Kirsten, moved to Lennox Head. “We would spend family holidays exploring the Byron and Ballina Shires while visiting, from then I knew I wanted to move here as soon as possible,” Luke said. Luke was a yoga teacher in Sydney, and met his wife, Nikki, 15 years ago who also taught yoga. “There was a connection straight away. It didn’t take long for us to get together and nine months later we were married,” he said. At the same time he was teaching yoga, Luke helped his neighbour who owned a motorcycle shop. When the opportunity presented itself a year later, Luke and Nikki took over the shop and delved into the business of restoring old motorcycles. “It sounds strange to people but both of these experiences prepared me really well for real estate. Building dream motorcycles for clients has a similar feel to selling a dream home to someone, while yoga taught me about communication, especially connecting with people you have only recently met,” he said.

What inspired you to join the real estate industry? “I knew the former owner of First National Byron Bay, Margaret Robertson, personally, . She introduced me to Chris, and after a year or so, Chris and the other partners offered me a position to become a sales and property advisor.” What do you enjoy about working in real estate? “I enjoy that I’m meeting people at a really important time in their life. Buying or selling a home is a major investment decision, a life-changing moment. I enjoy that I can help people through this time and make it a positive experience.” What do you love about Byron Bay? “The scenery, beaches and the surf; but what I enjoy most is the classic Byron melting pot. People from all walks of life in the one place mixing freely. It’s a coastal town that gets headline bands, but you can still find a stretch of beach without another person in sight.” What is your must-do attraction for visitors to Byron Bay? Definitely going to Julian Rocks or getting out on to the bay in a kayak. Looking back toward the bay from the water is stunning. You are likely to see dolphins up close, it’s special and not something you can find in many other places.”

YOU DON’T PAY ME... THE LENDER DOES.

how to get that home loan The days of 100 per cent loans are all but gone, so borrowers now need to ensure they have some savings at their fingertips.

Borrowing 100 percent of the cost of a home was once a commonplace however home buyers today are facing substantial deposit requirements as lenders adjust their lending standards. The majority of mortgage lenders now require a deposit of between 5 and 10 percent, with many requesting evidence that the deposit was saved over a period of time, which is commonly referred to as ‘genuine savings’. For many would-be home buyers these changes are disappointing as many have the income to service a mortgage, but just don’t have the cash to stump up the deposit. While your new home may now be a little harder to secure, don’t despair. Janice from White Picket Fence has put together some helpful tips to help you enter the market sooner.

START A REGULAR SAVINGS PATTERN NOW Banks will look for a good savings history; it shows that you’re able to manage your money.

LENDERS ARE IMPLEMENTING TOUGHER REQUIREMENTS WHEN IT COMES TO LENDING This might include looking deeper into your employment history (i.e. how long you’ve held a position for); so if you have a good job, stick with it.

BOOST YOUR BORROWING POWER BY ELIMINATING OTHER DEBTS AND LIABILITIES Pay off any outstanding loans, reduce and eliminate credit card debts and reduce credit card and / or overdraft limits; even if you’re not using them, high limits will reduce your borrowing power.

DOCUMENTATION IS NOW MORE IMPORTANT Be sure to have all supporting documents ready to fasten the process; this includes payslips and group certificates.

Elders Real Estate Bangalow

a smart move

F

or many prospective new home owners, a move can be better than a vacation, providing a change of scenery and opportunity for new adventures. For Elders Real Estate Bangalow, a move into their new office has delivered that and more; an uplifting vibe throughout the team and increased business due to more walk-ins. For Principals, Duncan Lorimer and Janice Maple, the change represents a new era in their ownership. “Duncan and I have owned the Elders Bangalow franchise since 2010, having purchased an already established business. With ever-evolving services offered to clients and a growing team, we needed a new building. Having the opportunity to design a fresh space, custom-built to our requirements, our new office is just perfect for our needs and has uplifted the positivity surrounding our team. We thought that the move initially would see less people walking through the door, but we have been delighted that the opposite has happened. With prime positioning and ample parking, we have seen an increase in foot-traffic which is exciting for our team and our customers,” Janice said. Elders Real Estate Bangalow is a dynamic team of 10 who bring a depth of knowledge to the business. Led by owners and Principals, Janice and Duncan, Dominic Spreckley rounds out the sales team. Offering premium rental services, the property management team is serviced by Tad Burcon and Jason Betts. The sales and property management specialists are supported by Gail Inkpen, Kerry Larvin, Belinda Hutchinson, Bettina Hartman and Kylee Rusna. “The maturity of our team and diversity of experience means we can provide a premium service to our clients, whether they are buying, selling, landlords or renters. All of our staff have worked in real estate for years, many in other offices, prior to ours, which means they bring a wealth of knowledge to their roles,” Duncan said. This expertise lends itself to Elders Real Estate Bangalow being recognised as the Byron Shire’s hinterland specialists. Based in the country heart of the shire,

Bangalow is the gateway to the lush hinterland and green rolling hills which make it such an attractive destination for city slickers seeking a peaceful slice of paradise. “While the appeal of Byron Bay for many is the natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle, some wish to live away from the tourist hustle of Byron Bay itself. The appeal is to live in serenity and solitude while being a short drive away from the cultural heart and beautiful beaches. Our clients come to us seeking something different, knowing we can provide a multitude of options. “For this reason, we specialise in village homes, lifestyle blocks as well as hobby farms through to full-sized farmland. Experience is key and we sell what we know. Duncan lives in Federal on a small macadamia farm and focuses on selling rural properties, Dominic lives in Mullumbimby and focuses on everything from Mullum and in-between to Bangalow while I live in Bangalow and specialise in selling in-town living. Our strengths are our personal experiences of living and selling in the areas we know and love, giving our buyers and sellers the best local knowledge we can provide,” Janice said. Being a part of the Elders network enhances the expert rural reputation. The office have friendly camaraderie with the Lennox Head and Alstonville branches, with all three working together to offer premium services throughout the large Byron bay hinterland. These connections often result in the branches working together to locate the perfect property for buyers, resulting in faster sales for sellers. At Elder’s recent real estate awards, the Bangalow branch was richly rewarded for its dedication to providing personal service to its clients. Janice and Duncan were both awarded with Elite status and the office itself was recognised for excellent gross commission for the year as well as an award for office innovation and progress. Janice was also recognised for her auction success. “It was very exciting to receive those awards and has motivated us to continue to provide the best service possible to continue to achieve excellent results for all of our clients,” Duncan said. The Bangalow branch is also well-known for its generosity in providing sponsorship for local community causes and events. “Each year, we are the major sponsor of Bangalow’s biggest events, the annual Billycart Derby and the Bangalow Show. We are also sponsors of other community groups and events including Fed Rocks and Flicks in the Field to name just a few. We are also sponsors of local sporting clubs including Bangalow Soccer and the Junior AFL club,” Janice said. Offering a comprehensive service, the Bangalow branch covers buying and selling through to rentals and property management. The business also rent storage sheds, with more than 140 sheds managed in two locations in the Bangalow Industrial Estate. HOMEPROPERTY&GARDEN

You have recently relocated to Byron Bay from the Sunshine Coast where you have designed many unique homes over the last 20 years. What was your reason for the move?

It appears that you are taking a different direction with Shackpalace Design Studio from your current Frank Macchia Design Studio.

Byron Bay has always felt like my spiritual home – over the last 20 years we have been holidaying here several times a year and when our youngest daughter finished school and left home, I convinced my wife Lorna that it was time for a change, and a move to Byron. I have always been someone who loves to question the way things are and Byron allows this way of thinking to flourish.

I am a keen student of philosophy and human nature and am very much wired to always question the way things are, and imagine how they could be better.

When did you first get into building design? I studied architecture in Victoria in the mid 80’s, however I really gained a sense of the joy of design when I got my first commission after graduating … which was a carport. The feeling that I could draw something on paper and then see this idea transform to full scale, was and is still very addictive. Do you specialise in any one building type? Over the years I have worked on many buildings including restaurants, cafes and wellness centres, however the bulk of my work, and clearly my real passion, is residential. I love designing homes and am very grateful that clients entrust me to join them in creating the most important building of their lives. A good relationship with your clients must be important? Yes definitely, this is crucial to the overall success of a project. I am fortunate enough to have become very good friends with many of my clients. My role fluctuates between listening and guiding, evaluating what will work best in different scenarios, and brainstorming new ideas that may not have been previously considered. Ultimately the best homes are the ones where a strong bond has been created and maintained between my team, the owners and equally as important, the builders.

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 36 of 72

I am interested in this exploration in all aspects of our societies and am particularly curious about the way we live in the buildings we create. In my 30 years of designing homes I have seen the way we live evolve a little, but not enough. I feel that we are still planning for spaces that no longer serve us as they previously may have done. I am keen to encourage a revolution in the way we think about our homes and Shackpalace represents a turning point in focusing more on what is most beneficial in moving us all forward in a way that connects us better to each other and our planet What are some of the key areas that you are now focusing on? The size of our homes; its time to make a big shift and consider quality and performance over size. The building process; choosing more authentic handmade construction methods to bring character and ‘soul’ back to our buildings. Understanding that the layout of our home has the ability to affect our moods and energy. Our awareness of the materials we use and how this relates to our health and the health of the planet. Sustainability and all the different ways this can be analysed. This is a more complex area than we initially think and one which is very fluid and continually evolving. And finally, beauty and aesthetics; the continual study of balance, harmony, scale and proportion to deliver a product that is both efficient and enduring, is an area that really gets me inspired. If this ingredient is the only one missing then all the others become irrelevant.

inoutside

Less stress than a reno, more stylish than a man-cave; Inoutside is simply that, more inside room, outside. The clever concept provides an economically viable and environmentally conscious alternative to provide families with extra living space. How you choose to utilise the space is entirely up to you and only limited by your imagination. An art gallery, pottery den, music studio, pool house or a self-sufficient apartment; Inoutside is revolutionizing the way we choose to live through simple modular lifestyle buildings. The genius minds behind these stylish studios are Tony and Julie Atkinson. While living in England, Tony’s career as a builder involved converting attics into functional rooms. The couple moved to Australia 13 years ago, and Tony continued working as a carpenter. With a

passion for increasing household space, Tony looked for alternative solutions given that Australian households rarely have attics or basements. He blended the need for more space with the Australian lifestyle of living outdoors and created Inoutside, outdoor rooms that stylishly incorporate nature’s rugged beauty with the convenience of encapsulating more indoor space. There are three styles of studio to choose from, each is made-toorder and completely customisable. Each Inoutside living space is constructed from high-quality building materials which meet all Australian building standards. You then have a choice of attractive finishing materials to choose from to suit your landscape style. The units can be raised off the ground in flood-prone areas to mimic the popular ‘Queenslander’ style, and can either run off an existing property’s main power supply or be converted to run off a solar solution.

it exudes an Aussie personality. Ones which are installed poolside and surrounded by attractive landscaping always look beautiful too.”

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST UNIQUE USE OF AN INOUTSIDE STUDIO?

HOW CAN PEOPLE CREATE A SECOND INCOME FROM AN INOUTSIDE SPACE?

“One was painted completely black and had no windows, but had a hole in the roof. It was designed to be a pottery studio. Because of the way they can be fully customised, we regularly kit them out as music studios with great acoustic qualities. We also had one which had a springy floor installed as an Irish Jig dance studio, so the students could get more height in their jumps to perfect their kicks and movements.” WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST VISUALLY SPECTACULAR DESIGNS WHICH HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED FROM AN INOUTSIDE STUDIO? “We had one which was completely styled with a breathtaking interior featuring a grand piano and designer furniture. It was pure opulence and a great example of how anything is achievable with an Inoutside space.” “One other which resonates with the concept of Australian outdoor living is one which was surrounded by gum trees and had an Australian rustic theme. We get a lot of enquiries from America about that one as

“A few popular concepts are allowing many Australians to work from home by using Inoutside studios. Offices, galleries and studios are popular.” “With AirBnB becoming more popular, we are seeing people create mini stand-alone apartments or granny flats and renting them out to travellers. One client purchased four and strategically set them up on a property with shared deck space, so that each one still had their privacy but it was a clever use of space and function.” “Health retreats are also a popular investment, with one or two rooms being used for accommodation, another for a yoga space and another for a spa or sauna room. The possibilities really are endless.” To find out how Inoutside can enhance your lifestyle, contact Julie on 0408 891 369 or email info@inoutside.com.au and visit inoutside.com.au to discover a new way of living outside of the box.

eden at byron While not all of us a blessed with a green thumb, advice from the enthusiastic experts at Eden at Byron ensures that even a beginner botanist can reap rewards from the seeds they sow.

P

ut simply, plants make life better. They fuel our body with beneficial nutrition, they provide a habitat for the birds and the bees and they provide us with the clean oxygen we need to breathe.

Maree from Eden at Byron explains how you don’t even need a garden to enjoy the benefits of fresh foliage. “If you’re new to gardening and don’t know where to start, this is where we can help. It’s amazing the difference a few strategic plants can make to your home or work space. It can be discouraging if you’ve had plants in the past which have died, but with careful consideration of the correct plant for your space, and care advice from us, your plant can provide advantages for years to come,” she said. A plant should be considered similar to a pet. They need space, sunlight, food and water to survive. They can get sick, and require a bit of love to flourish. They change and grow, enhance the mood of the people near them and make a space more enjoyable. “We want people to understand and love plants as much as we do,” Maree said. The team at Eden at Byron are also passionate about educating people on how to grow their own food.

Plants make life better! “It’s fresh, healthy, tastes incredible and most importantly, you know how it has been treated. You can ensure your produce is chemical-free and organic, which people are appreciating more these days.” Eden at Byron believe that plants and people are part of an interconnected eco-system, which is why the business has made continual advancement toward eliminating chemicals from their plants.

“We allow a natural balance to be restored to create a healthier environment. Creating habitats full of flowers are beneficial to insects such as bees, who need flowers to survive. We understand the important role we play in maintaining a thriving environment,” Maree said.

It’s easy to bring paradise home when you start at the garden of Eden.

Green thumb advice from Maree... Spring is just around the corner, and even if you don’t think of yourself as a ‘gardener’ it’s hard to resist the urge to grow something. If you’re new to gardening, and the whole plant thing is a bit daunting, I’d suggest you start gently. Get yourself an indoor plant or two, and start growing some food. Maybe plant some flowers somewhere. Indoor plants can really enliven a room. Not only do they look great, but research over the last few decades has proven that they help to improve air quality. In simple terms, the plants, along with the microorganisms present in the potting mix, create cleaner and healthier air, just by being there. People in workplaces containing plants have greater productivity and fewer minor ailments such as coughs and colds, headaches, skin irritation and fatigue. The trouble with indoor plants is that it’s hard to stop at one. I love indoor plants, but I think I love growing food even more. A salad can be on the table within minutes of harvest, and you can’t get

fresher than that. And I know exactly what has gone into the soil and on to my plants, so I know that it’s all clean and safe to eat. And while some fruit trees take years from planting to harvest, most herbs and vegetables are ready within a few weeks. Getting started with an edible garden is really simple. Raised beds are best. You can build your own from (untreated) timber or stone, or get one of the kits. I’ve tried a lot of different ones, but my favourite is the Vegepod. It has some key features which really set it apart from all the others. The self-watering wicking system reduces water usage dramatically, and means that plants can last weeks without watering. And because the water is stored in a reservoir at the base of the Vegepod, nutrients don’t leach away. The fitted mesh cover protects crops from harsh sun as well as pests (from caterpillars to bush turkeys!) and helps to regulate the temperature. It is a fully enclosed system, so you can have a Vegepod on a balcony or in a courtyard without ending up with soil everywhere.

Within 6 months of Tino’s commitment to his father and the business his father and he had discovered a new passion for providing herbal manufacturing workshops for the community. Then at 18 months in Tino discovered that he had a real passion for creating unique edible natural skincare. This is what kick started his intentions for leaving a legacy for his younger daughter Alaya, by creating his first botanical brand, ‘Alaya’s Super Skincare- Superfoods for the skin’. One of Tino’s biggest influences has been the false picture some of the cosmetic and skincare industry giants try to paint to their consumers. With so much emphasis placed on the manipulation of the consumer via effective marketing strategies, Tino expressed that, ‘I think we would have a very different looking skincare and cosmetic industry if the consumers really knew what went in to their products’. He continued to explain that often these products generally consisted of low-quality synthetic chemicals and often toxic ingredients. 42 www.byronlifemag.com

Our family pets are not just for Christmas or for decoration. They are a fun, friendly addition to the household, a much loved member of the family. They give us solace when we are upset, are the first to notice when we need a cuddle and are the easy-going company we crave; less demanding than their human counterparts! With this in mind, it is important we treat our furry friends with the respect they deserve. This includes making sure they have a comfortable place to sleep, enough exercise to keep their bodies energized and of course, enough of the right kind of food to keep them healthy. Byron Life Magazine sat down with Jacquie Cotter from Pooch’s Pantry who’s made it her business to create delicious, healthy dog food for the beautiful pups of the Bay. Jacquie is a qualified homoeopath, and she loves working with herbs in their raw form to create wonderful recipes for local dogs. Jacquie started out by making food for her Staffy, Ollie, ten years ago and her friends would often comment on his soft coat that was free from that ‘doggy smell.’ More recently, when Jacquie rescued another pup, who couldn’t sit still for her itching, Jacquie started experimenting with doggy dinners to heal her skin, adding in some herbs to support her liver and give her a detox. “And you know what? Within a couple months,” says Jacquie, “her coat was glossy and the itch was nowhere to be seen.” In all her recipes, Jacquie uses the beautiful fruit, vegetables, organic meats and quality herbs we have at our fingertips living in this beautiful region.

5 TIPS ON INTRODUCING A NEW PET TO A HOME: 1. Adopt, don’t shop! If you’re looking at getting a new pet,

consider adopting rather than buying. CAWI and the Animal Welfare League are great places to start.

2. Do some research into the breed you’re looking at, ask yourself whether you can meet their needs in terms of exercise and attention?

3. Make the time to be there while they settle in. The adjustment

period can be stressful, so try to take time off to be home with them for a few days.

4. Have consistent rules, this is vital in creating an environment

for a pet to thrive. We are lucky to have some great local training organisations in the Northern Rivers such as Barco Dog Training. Use these resources to your, and your pet’s, full advantage

5. Good quality, wholesome food is essential.

It is her mission to help local dogs and their owners use food to cure ailments, transforming tired looking pups into bouncy, bright eyed canines once again!

WHAT SHOULD WE FEED OUR DOGS FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH?

Holistically formulated & nutritionally dense

Including fresh food in your dog’s diet is vital. Just imagine what state of health you’d be in if you ate tinned meats and dry biscuits your whole life.

Available @ Mullum Pet Shop & Mullum IGA

Try to include variety in their diet, different sources of fresh meats, eggs, fish and organs. Nutrient dense fresh fruits and veggies such as pumpkin, leafy greens, bananas and blueberries can be added to your dog’s food bowl. Use fresh real foods just as you’d purchase for yourself and the family.

r e t a w g n i g n Bri to life

At the age of 71 Ian Blair Hamilton has had a life full of ground-breaking achievements.

I

nventing a revolutionary water filter that adds beneficial extra hydrogen to our water, starting an iconic business called Earth’N’Sea, launching an environment-friendly shower head on Kickstarter and moving to Italy, before returning again, choosing to live in Byron instead.

A local man through and through, Ian remembers when the biggest thing to happen on Saturday night was a ‘cat fight’ at the old Top Pub’ or Friday at the Railway Refreshment Bar when the local fishos cooked up a storm of fresh caught fish and shared with everyone. He remembers the early days of fighting the high rise developers to keep them out of Byron and even published a tongue-in-cheek publication called the Byron Underground. There are not many people more local or with more history in the area than Ian and at the age of 71 he is still dedicated to running his business and turning up to work every day. “It’s because I love it!” He says with a smile on his face. Ian’s favourite invention, the UltraStream, is a water filter that creates pure water beyond almost anything else available, but also alkalizes the water and supercharges it with therapeutically beneficial molecular hydrogen. From his base in Brigantine St, UltraStreams go all across the globe. So far, his business, AlkaWay has delivered over 6000 UltraStreams over the last three years. Ian’s latest invention is a water jug that filters many times more efficiently than shop-bought models yet at a similar cost. He’s now in the process of launching a crowdfunding campaign where everyone who orders a jug also donates one to poor families in lead-stricken American towns where there are over 200 towns with extreme lead contamination in their drinking water. When Ian’s not busy inventing he is involved with other ‘out there’ projects such as bringing mineral-rich water from deep in the Pacific Ocean. The water is then added to water systems to give people the benefits of water virtually identical to the water that surrounds every cell in our body.

“Water” says Ian, “Is what we are made of and most of us see it as our right, something we don’t need to think about or value, yet it is fundamental to our lives – as fundamental as every breath.” At home, Ian and his life partner Cassie spend time working on their garden, their home and themselves. And yes, Ian will retire one day. The only question is when. “I do still enjoy it. I feel I am more creative than I’ve ever been in my life,” says Ian, “anyone who thinks ageing is about some sort of diminution of possibilities, well, it just ain’t so! makemeover! Beauty Therapist : Bec Make Up Artist : Bec MODEL : Kylie Mowbray

10 years ago Kylie’s hubby became a quadriplegic after a rugby accident, she has been caring for him since while they raise their daughter who is now 14. Kylie has had lots of her own health issues throughout the intensity of caring for her husband and working hard to provide an income. Due to time and medical costs she rarely does much for herself in terms of pampering! Despite all of this, which is just the tip of the iceberg, Kylie is an absolute goddess of a woman, strong and vivacious with an infectiously warm spirit.

STEP 1: Kylie’s skin was needing a serious hydration boost so we focused on refining her skin by removing the surfaced dead skin cells with a lactic peel, followed by a gentle exfoliating enzyme mask. Finally Kylie was put under our medical grade LED for some light therapy, creating instant rejuvenation and a glowing complexion.

AFTER

Now her skin is beautifully hydrated, glowing and prepped for her makeup application.

STEP 2: We stock the Glo Minerals range which is what we have used on Kylie, this is a complete mineral makeup range loaded with antioxidants and is actually good for your skin! We started with our tinted primer which immediately calms redness and evens out skin tone. Kylie likes a good coverage so Bec used Glo Minerals Luxe foundation base and created a soft contour and hightlight with Glo Minerals pressed powder and Glo Minerals ‘Sunkiss’ bronzer. To open up Kylie’s eyes, Bec used Glo Minerals smokey eye pallette, concentrating on highlighting the whole eye area and light contouring for definition, individual flare lashes were placed on the outter corners of the eye and finished with Glo Minerals mascara. Finally a natural lipstick for a subtle look.

STEP 3: Adam from Osh Hair in Ocean Shores, created a gorgeous, sleek blow dry with a little kick to tame Kylie’s self-confessed ‘big hair’!

WIMP 2 WARRIOR THE ULTIMATE HUMAN EXPERIMENT

A

Andy Wheeler

ndy’s son, William, was learning jiu-jitsu at Extreme Mixed Martial Arts when Andy decided to step up his own game and learn martial arts himself.

“I wanted to keep him interested in the sport and be a good role model for him. I wanted to be proof that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.” With encouragement from his trainer, Andy signed up to the Wimp 2 Warrior program to get out of his comfort zone and challenge himself well above a level he was used to. What were your transformations during the training? “The most obvious was that I lost 18kg over that time, but for me, the biggest benefit is that I feel better than I have in a long time. I’m a chef, and mentally it has allowed me to handle stressful situations better, which has helped immensely in my career.” How was fight night? “I got bashed! It didn’t end well for me but it’s all about walking into the cage to begin with, not what happens once you’re in there. Six months ago I would have never thought I would have had the confidence to do that.” What is your advice for anyone wanting to give Wimp 2 Warrior a go? “It’s not an easy road but it is one which is definitely worth it. It will show you who you really are.”

anessa Ryan has her classmates to thank for a lot of pain and even more gain. In mid-January, they encouraged her to join an eight week fitness program with Extreme MMA.

“I had always wanted to check out Extreme MMA but I found it pretty intimidating. My desire to get fit and healthy won in the end and I really began to enjoy the Muay Thai component of the fitness program.” “I was intrigued when I heard about the 22 week experiment to turn you into an MMA fighter. I didn’t know what to expect but I already felt so good after training with the Extreme MMA instructors that I wanted to see how much further I could push myself. That’s what inspired me to sign up for Wimp 2 Warrior.” How was the training and transformations? “We trained five days per week, from 5.45am to 7:00am for 22 weeks, being coached in Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling and worked on strength and conditioning. I have learned not only a new skill I love but also I got fit, strong, happy and full of energy.” When will Fight Night be for you? “My opponent is from a Wimp 2 Warrior group in Brisbane and we fight on August 12. I was fortunate to watch the other team members fight here in Byron, it was great to see them giving it their all in the cage.” What is your advice for anyone wanting to give Wimp 2 Warrior a go? “It won't be easy! It will be hard, confronting, full on, you will be sore, tired and exhausted, but it will be the most rewarding experience and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn so much more about yourself. You will be fitter and sharper than ever. I wish I had started MMA years ago but now I am so glad I finally did. It has changed my life toward a better and amazingly exciting journey. What’s next?”

FAST 5 FACTS ABOUT CRYSTAL

What boards do you ride?

Food: Thai

“I’m riding an Al Merrick Bunny Chow and a Rook 15. They are both awesome boards, well-shaped. I just love them.”

Drink: Tequila Places on Earth: El Salvador and Mexico

Where is your favourite place to surf?

Band: Nirvana

“Newy.”

Mantra: Life is short, cherish the moments.

What have been your stand-out surf moments?

Ripping across waves and gliding through tubes, dawn and dusk you’ll find local surfer, Crystal Vail, doing what she loves. Growing up here in Byron, she loves the ocean and everything about it. She first felt the thrill of board on water when she was 14 and hasn’t looked back.

“World Juniors for sure, surfing Mexico, Brazil and El Salvador have all been awesome experiences. Amazing people, great waves and incredible food.”

A local leader in women’s surfing, Crystal carved a path to the Junior Worlds, where she displayed both skill and raw determination finishing 4th at the world championship in Kuta, Bali. Last year crystal also competed in the WQS (World Qualifying Series) in Mexico and Punta Roca in El Savador, both were right-hand point breaks.

How would you describe surfing in 3 words? “Tubes, sunsets and dawnies.”

At her local club the New Brighton Boardriders, Crystal takes the time to pass her skill and grace onto budding young gromms, including mentoring young up-and-comer, Finn Reece. “Finn is one of the coolest kids I know. I just love surfing with him and he’s ripping right now. I help a lot of the girls with style correction and tips to make it easier for them too,” she said. While the sea is her second home, Crystal isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and connects with the earth working for Billinudgel Landscape Supplies. You can also catch up with her crafting a mean cup of coffee across the region’s markets for Coffee Oasis. The local support she has received to help her shine on the world stage of surfing has blown Crystal away. “The local generosity has been overwhelming. My sponsors, Onboard Surf Store, Byron Bay, East Coast Pilates Studio, Sabi Sushi Ocean Shores and of course the New Brighton Boardriders for always backing me, thank you.” 50 www.byronlifemag.com

W

ith the sun on his face and salt in his hair, gromm surfer, Finn Reece is happiest when he’s surfing an epic wave.

Finn’s passion originally came from his dad, former Uncle Toby’s Ironman and former world champion paddle boarder, Hayden Reece. Hayden would take Finn out into the surf on the back of his board when Finn was five years old, out the back of the New Brighton surf break. Hayden sadly passed away three years ago from cancer, when Finn was 11. From watching Finn on the water, it’s clear that Hayden’s love for the ocean and competitive spirit lives on through his son, who is described as “A true ocean man like his dad,” by Finn’s mum, Stacy. Now 14-years-old, Finn excels at all the individual attributes that make for a champion ironman. He is a champion paddle boarder, runner, surfer and triathlete as well as a skilled AFL player. He goes to Byron Bay High School and also enjoys skateboarding, fishing and hanging out with his sister, Tiki, but if he could, he would surf pretty much all of the time. Finn is a member of the New Brighton Boardriders and is mentored by Crystal Vail. He won his age division last year and is currently leading the under 18 division this season. Despite his success, his main motivation is to have fun. “I don’t really look too seriously toward the competitions, I just want to get out there and have fun. Crystal has been a big help with my technique and she tells me to just have fun too.” “Each surf is about getting better for myself. I really admire Dave Rasta, a free surfer with mad skills, he doesn’t compete but everyone knows how good he is,” he said.

Where is the best place you’ve ever surfed?

“Last year we went to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia to surf Niposi and Burgers. They were my dad’s favourite waves to surf, it was an epic trip.”

Where do you surf locally?

“My home beach waves at Newy, Main or Seagulls at North Wall. I’m lucky to be sponsored by two local places, LSD Boards and Thrills Clothing Co, they help keep me on the water.”

What do you love most about surfing?

“Just the way it makes me feel. It reminds me about when I used to go out in the water with dad. It’s such a good feeling inside a barrel.”

What would you be when you’re older if you can’t become a pro surfer?

I really want to go to drama school and become an actor or a comedian. I’m already pretty funny now. I like Chris Hemsworth, how he cruises in Byron and lives it up in Hollywood. He seems like a good Aussie guy living the dream, that’s what I’d like to do.”

I don’t really look too seriously toward the competitions, I just want to get out there and have fun.

t was skill alongside a carefree spirit of surf appreciation which saw Roisin Carolan emerge as one of Byron Bay’s best women longboarders. She took out the Noosa Junior Women’s event and then the state titles as a teenager before scoring sponsorship from local board maker, McTavish. She graduated to the ASP pro tour ranks and shredded across the world at championship and invitational events. Growing up in Manly, Roisin always felt a connection with the beach and was a nipper, before her parents got her a foamie so she could learn to stand. She rode a longboard for the first time at age 11 and was instantly addicted. “The feeling of noseriding, it’s a sense of freedom I can’t get from anything else.”

Her family moved to the Byron Bay hinterland soon after, living on five acres surrounded by pristine bushland. Roisin connects to her surrounds seamlessly and loves to live a natural lifestyle. The ocean is both her passion and playground. She is serious talent on a board, without the flashy commercialisation of the sport which has hit social media in recent years. She is natural and unassuming, and that’s why she’s adored, with fans frothing to catch a glimpse of her on the water. What board do you ride? “I mostly ride my Mctavish Noserider, it goes well in almost anything and is just a really lush board to ride.” What do you get up to when you’re not surfing? “I like to draw and also cook. When I draw it helps to take me into a zone where all I focus on is that, it’s so relaxing. Like drawing, surfing can be creative. The lines you draw in a wave, your own style; it’s a form of expression. I’m starting my chef’s apprenticeship soon so that should be really good to push my cooking further.” What have been your stand-out surf moments? “Going to Malibu for the first time for the Women’s Invitational was one of the best times of my life, I got to experience America for the first time and surf perfect Malibu waves with some of my best mates.” “I think the people I've met through surfing and all the trips I've had with them. California, Mexico and even just little trips down to crescent are all stand-outs.” How would you describe surfing in 3 words? “Exhilarating, joy and lush.”

To deny my silly self the application of wood glue to my mohawk in 88, would be superficial, while saving loved ones from imminent death would just vanish new life that came to birth in later days.

Nothing at all! History is knowledge. The value of the past is the only clue we have to move forward. We are doomed if we repeat our mistakes…war, hatred, genocide, racism, greed, hunger, environmental neglect.

So, I guess if I could engage my inner timelord, then I would head back to Berlin, May 1933, where only one book would be burnt instead of thousands. That being Mein Kampf. To deny Adolf Hitler any sense of grandeur would be so very satisfying, on so many levels.

Otherwise, we can survive and repeat our triumphs…peace, love, procreation, music, art, joy, community, freedom. You cannot go back in time and change a single thing, but you can actively do everything in your power to change the future. Choose wisely.

The birth of plastic in all it’s useless and unnecessary forms. It’s hard to accept that as a first-world country, knowing where plastic ends up, that we still go to our local supermarket to be handed over an endless supply of land/oceanfill.

Allowing all folk to live freely, and on an equal footing as an earthly right, would be beautiful. This ‘freedom run’ through time, so very fulfilling.

It’s interesting to look around a room at objects that have a plastic component and wonder if that thing could exist or function without that component? and do we really need it anyway? P.S this white sign I’m holding is made from 100% compostible recycled cardboard right??.... or it will be next time!

What do you love most about being a barista? My customers often tell me I’ve made their day when I hand them their coffee. Knowing that the coffee I made makes them happy is the biggest reward a barista can get!

What do you believe is the secret of a perfect coffee?

a busy morning at the café quite a while ago and I was making coffees when the component that stores pressure in the coffee machine failed and suddenly exploded! Literally exploded. It made such a loud bang and with all the bomb scares going on in the world at the moment, it hit a nerve with more than a few of my customers who screamed loudly, ducking under the tables! I was so startled I dropped the milk jug while I was steaming which made a huge mess. Thankfully we all survived though!

It’s best to start with really good coffee beans which have been expertly roasted. Then you have to find that perfect extraction point for the brew method be it espresso, milk based coffees or filter coffee. The three main points for perfect extraction are going to be dose (how much coffee goes in) yield (how much coffee comes out) and the time it takes to extract. Creating the perfect balance of these three variables is an art form in itself and making the perfect coffee is a lot more complicated than most people think!

Have you ever offered a free coffee and why?

What would you recommend from the menu?

meet the chef

Sebastian Goldhorn The Beet

As a diving enthusiast and lover of the Byron Bay lifestyle, Sebastian Goldhorn jumped at the opportunity to open new vegan restaurant, The Beet, alongside owners Heather Myers and Aaron Bilbija. A Chef for more than 20 years, Sebastian has worked in countless restaurants both back in Europe and in Australia. He trained in Germany, then after many years of fine dining experience he moved to Australia for a change of scenery and lifestyle. Sydney was his home for 12 years where he cooked in both casual and fine dining establishments, including Luke Mangan’s ‘Glass.’ “I’m excited to be representing The Beet; it’s trendy, tasty and the way we should be preparing food. Even non-vegans really enjoy the food, it’s packed full of flavour and offers dishes to suit every palate. The fact that the food is vegan just brings the added bonus of being good for you,” Sebastian said.

The Beet’s mission is to provide exciting plant-based food which is full of flavour and can be enjoyed by everyone. Ample parking is available, find The Beet on Jonson St, in the Woolworths Plaza, Byron Bay.

Who inspired you to become a chef? “My great grandmother. She was the best cook ever. She was able to extract flavours out of an ingredient without masking it with something else. Simple but delicious!” What is your philosophy regarding food? “My connection with food changed over the last five years or so, during my transition from a carnivore to vegetarian and then becoming a vegan. Over the years with the rising awareness of how we grow and treat our “food” I had doubts about my profession and how I could make it work to align my ethical standards and my job. That’s when I shifted my focus to vegan cooking. Having “normal” people (carnivores) leaving The Beet with the words that they just had the best meal EVER puts a massive smile in my face. What would you recommend from the menu? “I think the Tortellini dish is great but for the colder winter months I definitely recommend the Bortsch, (Eastern European beetroot soup), which is getting fantastic feedback.” What is a cooking secret you can share with our readers? “It’s all about the balance. Everything will taste great if you just balance the three main flavours; saltiness, sweetness and acidity. Build up on that with spices and an eye for food styling and you’ll be off to Masterchef in no time.”

meet the chef Michael Desmond The Brewery

Invigorate your soul under the magnificent fig tree with a fresh brew in hand and live entertainment filling the air. The perfect location to escape the hustle and bustle of town, The Brewery is destination dining at its best.

H

ead Chef, Michael Desmond, fell in love with Byron at a time in his life when love was at an all-time high. He honeymooned here 10 years ago and knew it was a place he wanted to be.

He trained as a chef in Newcastle and Sydney before moving to the foodie scene of Melbourne, where his enthusiasm for fancy eats sparked into life. He worked with Shannon Bennet and trained with Shane Delia in three hat restaurants, before moving to the café scene working with Benjamin Cooper and Andy Gale at St Ali. When he moved to Suffolk he took on the role of head chef at Footbridge Café in Brunswick Heads before arriving a year ago at The Brewery.

“What I love about The Brewery is the passion. From the kitchen-hands to the brewers, bar staff and chefs; everyone has such pride in what we produce. We love what we do and that’s reflected in the amazing service our guests come to experience.”

Who inspired you to become a chef? “When I was young I worked with my parents in a simple bistro and found working during busy periods so exciting, so I started an apprenticeship. During this period I learnt off Marco Pierre White and thought he was so cool – like a rock star of the culinary world who became, essentially, my Kurt Cobain.” What would you recommend from the menu? “This is like picking a favourite pet! It would have to be either the cauliflower poppers with ranch dressing (so simple, yet so much flavour) or the crispy pork belly with apple slaw and chilli caramel (great balance of fresh and rich).” What is an ingredient you always have in your pantry? “Apart from seasoning, I always have tahini, it goes in smoothies regularly and I make a great cauliflower and sunflower seed hummus which goes well with beetroot kraut on sour dough from Byron Bay Alive Foods and Bread Social respectively.” What is a cooking secret you can share with our readers? “Be patient. Don’t rush when cooking, give it love and the time it needs. This way meals always come out so much more enjoyable.”

20TH AUGUST Y 20 A 17 ND

Event Details The Festival of the Seven Seas will be held at Byron Bay Brewery on Sunday, 20th August, and will be an all-day family-friendly event.

Event Schedule There is a crisis occurring in our oceans, so large that no nation will take direct action for fear of going bankrupt. Massive collections of waste known as ‘garbage patches’ can be found in every ocean in the world. The largest one in the world is the Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash vortex so large that scientists have labelled it as immeasurable, due to its remote location and the fact that no-one really knows how deep the garbage sits in the water. The entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bounded by the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, which is a system of circular ocean currents formed by the Earth’s wind patterns and the forces created by the rotation of the planet. This spinning vortex virtually sucks in the waste from the ocean and holds it in a great big swirling mass. And there are more than one of these in our oceans. Because no country will take responsibility for the waste, there is little that can be done to clean up the mess already there, which is why action needs to be taken at home, on land, to stop the plastic reaching the water in the first place. The inaugural Festival of the Seven Seas is a fundraiser for local conservation groups, Plastic Free Byron and Positive Change for Marine Life, to raise awareness of the crisis faced by the world’s oceans. Threats like plastic pollution, overfishing, drum lines and the deteriorating health of marine life means that now more than ever our oceans need to be protected for future generations.

There will be a free BBQ at the Brewery from 11am for all those who joined the clean-up. • The fundraising event will commence at the Brewery from 12pm. • The event will be educational and will feature live music, guest speakers, demonstrations and entertainment for all ages. Guest speakers include Mayor Simon Richardson, Danny Salfield (Bay FM), Kate the Plastic Free Mermaid (Plastic Free Byron), Karl (Positive Change for Marine Life). • The Festival will be MC’d by Danny Salfield from Bay FM, with the local community radio station broadcasting live from the Brewery from 2-4pm.

Event Highlights • Live Entertainment throughout the day from 12pm • Designated family entertainment area with face painting and educational talks and demonstrations • Entry by donation with proceeds going to fundraiser • Karma Keg donated with all proceeds going to fundraiser • Silent auction featuring surfboards that have been painted on by local artists with proceeds going to fundraiser • Marine expert presentations and talks • Bay FM live broadcast

HOW CAN LOCAL BUSINESSES CONTRIBUTE?

The Festival of the Seven Seas will provide an opportunity for local businesses to partner with the community to help save our oceans. There are various opportunities for cross promotion with the event, including a raffle that will be drawn on the day. Local businesses can donate gifts for the raffle, which will provide positive exposure for their businesses in the community. Businesses can also provide assistance for the beach clean-up, provide volunteers to collect donations on the day, or help to promote this important cause. Please contact Alain de Carne, for more information on how you can get involved – email alain.decarne@byronbaybrewery.com.au.

GUEST SPEAKER

Kate the Plastic Free Mermaid! Ask a kid, who didn’t want to become a super hero? The super cool outfit, special powers and crowds of adoring fans is something most of us have dreamed about. But as we get older and the responsibilities of life kick in, we resign to the fact that the injustices of the world are too much for a mere mortal to take on. However, for Kate Nelson, our very own Plastic Free Mermaid, the desire to defend her natural environment from faceless villains was a challenge she refused to give up on. Her lifestyle growing up in America consisted of canoeing in pristine blue lakes near the Canadian border and lifeguarding in southern California, instilling in her a respect for nature. She studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and volunteered for Ocean Futures Society head researcher, Dr. Andrea Neal, who informed Kate that plastics don't biodegrade, they photodegrade into tiny pieces in the ocean, trashing islands and communities. She then ventured out into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the scale of the crisis really sunk in. “I saw for myself that it was not a patch or an island twice the size of Texas, but a thick soup of tiny micro plastics. As I learned that our plastic trash is not going anywhere for thousands of years I decided then again I had to try to give up plastic permanently,” Kate said. Come and hear Kate speak at the Festival of the Seven Seas, to learn how you can play your part in starting a revolution to give up plastic permanently and keep our oceans clean.

W

hile the allure of attending a festival titan such as Glastonbury or Coachella has its obvious appeal, a majority of musos are now delving deeper into their soul, in search of more fulfilling musical enlightenment. Breaking away from festival tradition, the Mullum Music Festival’s colourful and eclectic lineup proudly features a large percentage of local music acts, highlighting just how deep the local talent pool is. Blend that with emerging artists from across the globe and you have one of the best collections of sound anywhere in the world. But that’s not its only appeal. The festival runs over four days and instead of performers hitting the stage once, you’re likely to hear them a number of times, popping up in various venues throughout the quaint town of Mullumbimby, from pubs and clubs to out in the street. Blend that with a host of other events to partake in, from yoga to tree planting, this festival which has been coined ‘the biggest little music festival in Australia’ will leave you feeling as though you have done so much more than listen to music for a long weekend. It will change you. You will feel amazing, reinvigorated with a deeper love and connection to a wider genre of music.

How many other festivals can you say that about? This year, the Mullum Music Festival is celebrating its 10th year. In its first year, terrible storms blocked roads into Mullumbimby with powerlines and trees cutting access. Locals from Byron Bay arrived with chainsaws to break through the mess to attend the opening night. That same passion prevails today, another reason why this festival is unlike any other. Born from one man’s passion for music and promotion, Mullum Music Festival’s Director, Glenn Wright, shares with Byron Life Magazine how his journey began. “When I was 16, I used to sneak into the best club at the time, the Basement, and check out musicians like Vince Jones, Jon Hoffman Big Band, Paris Pink, Great White Noise.” “I was drawn to promoting. My first paid job was at the old Regent Theatre on George Street. I was paid to dress in a dog costume and hand out brochures for a pantomime my uncle was producing, so promoting is kind of in my blood,” he said. From 19, Glenn owned a music venue in The Rocks for 16 years. It was his life with the position being all-consuming. In 2002 when he sold the venue, he wanted to get out of Sydney. “We headed north and settled in Main Arm, Mullumbimby. We set up by purchasing a block of land and built some cabins. I was running short of cash so I thought I better do something. I called many of my favourite bands that had played the club and invited them to Mullumbimby for a four-day paid holiday. That was the first Mullum Music Festival.” 64 www.byronlifemag.com

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 64 of 72

Fast 5 Facts about Glenn Food: Sushi Drink: Stone and Wood pale ale Place on Earth: Mullumbimby Band: So many to choose from, I can’t have a favourite! But if I did, Charles Mingus, The Necks, Jackie Orszaczky, Zorn, Miles Davis, Glen Campbell, Bach, Jesse Younan. Saying: Get out of the bathroom and give somebody else a go!! (I say it to my children all the time)

Outside of your music and promotion achievements, what has been a memorable life moment for you? “The stand out moment of my life was traveling to Scotland and spending a week on the Isle of Skye. I’m of Scottish blood and I felt a connection to the place, kind of like spiritual, although I’m so not spiritual.” “I had a friend who I told this to and he laughed and said he too had been to Skye and it was really boring place. He drove around it twice on the first day of his visit and the next morning drove around one more time to make sure he didn’t miss anything, then left. He told me I should get out more!“ “Made me think, one man’s inspiration can be another’s boring distraction.” With an impressive lineup already announced, the 10th anniversary is set to honour the milestone in style. Some of the headline acts include Jon Cleary and The Monster Gentlemen, Frazey Ford, Marlon Williams & The Yarra Benders, Lindi Ortega, Too Many Zooz, Z-Star Delta, Gabriel Garzón-Montano, The East Pointers, The Teskey Brothers and Jazz Party. The complete lineup will feature nearly 100 acts, ensuring Mullumbimby will be humming continuous tunes over what will be an epic four days.

In the decade since its inception Mullum has a reputation for booking new acts. Many of these acts have gone on to play bigger stages all over the world. Like NZ artist Marlon Williams who has been selling out shows throughout the US, UK and Europe, and returns for this year’s program with his beloved Yarra Benders. With big headlines like Jon Cleary the funkiest of the funkiest (I mean he’s from Funky town - New Orleans) bringing his Absolute Gentlemen, a four-piece riot of gospel harmonies and foundation rocking grooves. Perhaps nothing typifies the unconventional joy of the program more than All Our Exes Live in Texas. A festival favourite, these four songwriters, with four unique voices, return to deliver their four-part indie slice of folk heaven.

T

en years ago the first Mullum Music Festival pioneered a very different type of music event. No gates. No big headlines. No VIP areas. Basically a ‘no hassle’ festival. A festival where artists and performers mingled, where shows are held in halls, clubs and pubs rather than tents, and instead of driving hours to park in a field and trudge on site, patrons became enmeshed in the spirit of a vibrant village. It worked. ‘It’s not just about one act, but rather all the performers,’ says Festival Director Glenn Wright. Mullum Music Festival is about the experience. Everyone knows that. It’s all about the people. All of the people. Everyday People! This year the Festival tips its hat to the line up ten years on by including many of the artists who were on the first bill. It’s a Festival homecoming with patrons Suzannah Espie, Mama Kin and Harry James Angus all returning to perform along with Tinpan Orange, Jojo Smith, Liz Stringer, Hussy Hicks, Oka and a swag of acts everyone has grown to love.

Canadian singer-songwriter Frazey Ford brings her smooth, opulent and electric voice to our 10th Mullum Music Festival. Mama Kin Spender feeds the soul when she delivers heart stopping ballads and percussive beats, this time around in collaboration with Melbourne musician Spender. From tender to brooding, they skip from dark to light, presenting a bewitching collision of alchemy, harmony and percussive wizardry. Tinpan Orange is one of Australia’s most revered lo-fi folk trios. Led by the unmistakable voice of Emily Lubitz alongside her brother, guitarist Jesse Lubitz, and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Alex Burkoy. Canada’s unique Lindi Ortega will be putting her innate Nashville-esque country music instincts on the line with some serious guitar playing chops. For those who come to the Mullum Music Festival in search of the next breaking act, one could be well advised to check out The Teskey Brothers. So what’s so damn good about this modest little event in Mullumbimby? Well its fatigue free. It’s affordable, it’s appealing to all ages and it’s about good music. Very, very good music.

Stuart Taylor Owner (Byron Gourmet Pies), Josh Bedser Owner (Murwillumbah Truck centre)

Murwillumbah Truck Centre LOCA LS SUPPO R TIN G LO CA LS Proudly servicing the Northern Rivers since 1981, Murwillumbah Truck Centre is an award winning dealership with a passion for trucks and the people who drive them. Their range of new and used vehicles is purposely curated with the Northern Rivers business owner in mind and their state-of-the-art workshop has the ability to service a wide range of vehicles, cared for by a skilled team of trained mechanics. While the business has grown and changed with time, the one constant which has remained the same is the level of personalised service delivered by the family-run team. Steve and Karen Bedser established the business 36 years ago, providing the perfect platform for their sons, Adam and Josh, to continue their family’s reputation for reliable service. Adam displayed mechanical prowess from a young age and quickly grew into a skilled mechanic who heads the workshop. Josh manages the sales and finance team, ensuring those family values are extended to each customer who passes through the door. “For many of our customers, after the family home, buying a truck is the biggest investment they’ll ever make. The right price is the first step, which is why in an increasingly competitive market and the ubiquity of the internet, we strive to be competitive as well as providing the peace of mind which comes with purchasing from a trusted local dealership. “We only ever provide solutions that we can back up, as integrity is part of every sale we make and service we provide. We are locals too, and we want to contribute to the Northern Rivers area and see other locals growing and prospering,” Josh said. Looking after locals has always been at the forefront of the Truck Centre’s values and whilst their customers have vastly different needs, they all share the commonality that their vehicle is the backbone of their business.

64977_CORE_BB Mag_Aug-Sept.pdf - July 27, 2017 - 70 of 72

“We regularly visit customers on-site to immerse ourselves in their business to uncover the challenges they face on a daily basis. We can then tailor solutions to best complement their livelihood. Whether that’s the owner operator who needs to upscale his utility vehicle into a car licence truck, or needs a workhorse for farming, a fleet solution or even a passenger carrying bus – we hand pick our stock so we can cater to all business irrespective of their size and the work they’re undertaking. We also tap into our wide network of body builders to customise our truck bodies and manage the process end to end, so that each customer is delivered the ideal vehicle according to their exact specifications” “Our service doesn’t end there though”, added Adam. “Our after-sales is second to none with modern workshop facilities, factory trained mechanics and after hours support.” Testament to the local support which Murwillumbah Truck Centre receives, is valued client of three years, Byron Pies. “Polite, helpful and extremely professional. Murwillumbah Truck Centre have been reliable, offering on-going support and back-up. “A good example of this is when my existing vehicle was letting us down. The Truck Centre were able to structure a deal with a great changeover and achievable repayments to get us into a new truck. The warranty they offer on repairs also gives me peace of mind. “Their service is on-time and comprehensive. They communicate well, offering feedback about future requirements so there are no surprises. As a business-owner forecasting future spend, this transparency is very helpful. Never too busy to take your call, their friendly and knowledgeable staff make life easy for us.” Located at 250 Tweed Valley Way, Murwillumbah Truck Centre are dedicated to getting you on the road, and keeping you there.
