From the

editor

Welcome to our first edition of Byron Life magazine, the regions newest, bi-monthly, premium lifestyle publication that I hope will find its way into the heart and soul of our local community. What a place to live! We have a revolving door of brilliantly gifted humans who are doing spectacular and mind-boggling things that resonate worldwide, which is evident in the following pages. As a publication, we will strive to give this chilled and complex community, a fresh communication channel, with content derived from real local people and businesses. We’re not here to push a political agenda or spread gossip, we are simply your magazine, telling your story. I’m Nik Torti, Managing Editor. Like many others here in the shire, I’ve led a vividly exciting life and have been privileged to see many parts of our beautiful world. But nothing compares to this part of the world that we call home. When you live here, truer words have never been spoken than ‘home is where the heart is.’ I am wildly excited to be bringing this publication into the community I love and can’t wait to see how it evolves once it is embraced by you as your own. Because that’s what Byron Life is about, you, your neighbour, your friends, your community. I could not have done something of this magnitude without the help and support of my beautiful partner and wife-to-be, Rani. She has been nothing but loving since the idea for Byron Life entered our lives. With her by my side, anything is possible.

ommunity radio continues to be a vital source of information and entertainment across Australia. It is a precious commodity worth protecting, and it needs community support to stay on air.

show won the prestigious Walkley/Google award for innovation in journalism, a highly competitive grant program that recognizes progressive initiatives on the Australian media landscape.

BayFM’s production manager, William Martin, explains the importance of free and independent local media.

“The true value of this honor is in the handson mentoring, training and encouragement offered by some of the top journalists and start-up experts in the world. We were chosen because the mission of the Community Newsroom is not just to report the news, but to redefine the characteristics of news and engagement, making the news process accessible to everyone.”

“One of BayFM’s primary objectives has always been to engage the community and to ‘fill the gap’ left by mainstream media organizations. “A free and independent media are the means by which citizens can hold their governments and corporations accountable. We stand on the shoulders of a committed group of people that, for the last 25 years have recognized this fact, and made sure the Byron Shire has a radio station to help us come together, and determine our destiny as a community,” he said. The passion of the journalism and production team at BayFM is evident in its award-winning Community Newsroom broadcast, between 11 a.m. and 12 .p.m. on Friday mornings. The

It uses this media platform as a voice for people to engage in the affairs of public life, with the hope of creating a better future. “The news is no longer a spectator sport, the tools are now in the hands of ordinary citizen journalists to participate in a broader social and political conversation. What you will hear on the Community Newsroom are stories told by the people impacted by the events unfolding in our communities, put together into a weekly live newscast, special

reports, news featurettes, social media and podcasts for online distribution. “We’re covering local, national and international stories that largely aren’t being reported in mainstream media. Citizen Journalism is a revolution that is changing the world, and our aim is to help create the defining media organisation of the 21st Century. The exciting part is that everyone can be involved,” William said. Despite its important place in society, unbelievably BayFM receives zero government funding or support. “We rely 100% on the generosity of our sponsors, and subscribers. Take a moment today to subscribe to BayFM, your support is what keeps it all going.” Tune in to BayFM on 99.9, your local station packing a global punch. www.byronlifemag.com 7

TODD SOTHEREN Byron Chamber of Commerce Vice President

Chamber of Commerce

WHEN YOUR BUSINESS VOICE IS STRUGGLING TO BE HEARD, YOUR LOCAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CAN BECOME YOUR LOUDEST ADVOCATE.

N

ot only does it connect like-minded business owners with one another, it can provide guidance on almost every facet of business, from hiring staff to reducing overheads.

Founder of local business, Creation Theory, and Byron Chamber of Commerce Vice President, Todd Sotheren, delivers the inside scoop as to why business owners should feel at ease in reaching out to their local Chamber. “It’s an exciting time to join. We have been redefining our mission statement, with focus around a more direct-action approach to helping facilitate local business activity. “Having come from Sydney, when I moved to Byron Bay I was working from a home office and found it challenging to get visibility across what was happening from a business perspective in the community. Joining the Chamber of Commerce opened up a surprisingly diverse range of entrepreneurial activity,” Todd said. There are a number of Chamber of Commerce options to choose from throughout the Byron Shire, as listed below. What they all have in common, is the potential to power your business to larger profitability through connections and strategic advice. Todd said, “We want the business community to know that we are THEIR Chamber. We exist entirely for their benefit. We are a non-political, genuinely objective, entity who just want to see our community, our region and our local businesses thrive, all as one holistically integrated and mutually supportive ecosystem.” Stand side-by-side with like-minded business owners and see how a Chamber of Commerce membership can expose your business to exciting new opportunities.

SIMON RICHARDSON “Byron is one of only a few places in the world that is an idea as well as a place. “It’s a place that is a home to an alternative, progressive, active-thinking community, who care for others and the planet. “It’s where our hearts are valued as equally as our minds. “This Byron idea comes from the spirit of the land and from the actions and integrity of its community.”

W

ith the launch of Byron Life into the Byron Shire’s many close-knit communities, it is an honour and blessing to have the support of Mayor Simon Richardson, as we set forth on our path in telling the stories of our people and our place. “Byron Life Magazine is a welcome addition to our shire. Many publications focus on the place of Byron as visitor experiences, however I think the spirit of Byron starts with the people. This magazine focusing on Byron’s people, is beautifully placed to express, share and celebrate the spirit of the community,” Cr. Richardson said. Byron Life’s purpose is to be a community story-teller, to connect business owners with their clients, to bond communities and strengthen old-fashioned neighbourly relationships. Cr. Richardson commented, “Life today often pulls us away from deep connections as we focus on our careers and families. We can struggle to connect with those around us, including those who serve us or provide services for us.” “I’ve been privileged enough to get to know so many incredible, diverse and fascinating people whose passions, stories and actions are worthy of sharing. Learning about them through the story-telling of Byron Life Magazine will inspire all of us to connect with each other on a deeper, more positive level.” The Byron Shire is an amazing community for supporting local businesses and celebrating local success. The future is bright as the shire invigorates itself toward diverse, growing and globally significant industries. We look forward to the future, in sharing success, spreading positivity and celebrating the champions, from all walks of life, here in this place we know and love as Byron. www.byronlifemag.com 9

“She was the most awesome person and remembered everyone’s name in the crew. A true professional,” Nick said.

He spent his childhood surfing the beaches of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales and first stood up on a board at The Pass when he was 7 years old.

Nick’s most prized work as a photographer came from shooting a fashion editorial in a run-down ghost town in Northern California.

t Byron Life Magazine, we think we are lucky to have him as our photographer.

Originally from the Gold Coast, Nick’s passion for surfing came from a young age. His dad would drive him to the beach at 4 a.m. so they could get the BBQ’s and early waves before the big kids came out.

His film and photography talent grew from necessity. He and his close friends would make surfing videos on the weekend. No one wanted to be the one filming, they all wanted to be catching the waves.

Film and photography took him across the globe and he worked extensively in Los Angeles. He had the opportunity to work the Oscars red carpet a number of times along with the MTV Music Awards and other high-profile celeb events.

Nick travelled extensively over the past six years making a documentary on a transgender surfer, Peter Drouyn aka Westerly Windina.

He travelled to Colombia on Shakira’s private jet for a television piece on her philanthropic work for a BBC World Service documentary.

He recently also wrapped up a film telling the story of HRH, Prince Leonard of Hutt River Province; an inspiring story of one man taking on the Australian Government and winning.

“It was absolutely insane to be travelling in her home country at that time which was at the height of her career. Lots of machine gun security and big black SUV’s.

COMMUNITYUNITY

l a r jungur nabang u t cul ptsLois Cook e c con WE PAY OUR RESPECTS TO THE ORIGINAL CUSTODIANS OF THE LAND, BOTH PAST AND PRESENT, THE PEOPLE FROM NYANGBUL COUNTRY IN THE BUNDJALUNG NATION OF EASTERN AUSTRALIA.

I

t is a privilege to live in this beautiful part of Australia, and part of getting to know our locals is to also understand, respect and acknowledge the past.

Jungur Nabang, “Lois Cook”, is a tour guide and artist from Aboriginal Cultural Concepts, a traditional owner of Nyangbul country. Nyangbul lands extend from Brunswick Heads to Ballina, to Wardell and Cabbage Tree Island on the Richmond River, to Evans Head. Jungur Nabang means Pelican Mother. As part of being conscious of respecting this beautiful Nyangbul land, both in nature and culture, Lois advises that an important first step is to recognise Indigenous people as the first Australians. “Paying respect to the original custodians formally acknowledges our people’s ongoing connection to the land.

“Giving gratitude is as simple as being mindful of where you are, taking steps to not pollute this beautiful place we call home and respecting our sacred and important places.” “We have one lore (law) ‘thou shall not harm.’ This can be defined through the environment, ourselves and others as well as recognising a good rule and a bad one that will have inherent consequences in the future planning of the use of valuable resources, infrastructure, environmental planning, appropriate historical documentation and placing the burden of truth on us all living here on Earth,” she said. At events and on her tours, Lois talks from the heart about the place she calls home, having grown up locally enjoying the beaches, hinterland and sacred places. She also shares local history; pre-invasion, invasion and postinvasion; to recognise and remember the scarred region’s past. “My cultural mentors, my father, Lewis, and my dear uncle, Douglas Cook, tell many stories of our history, including the many atrocities that occurred in their lifetime as well as mine. These stories are essential as it gives accounts of our resilience to remain in our homelands, regardless of Government and its policies.” “A ‘Welcome to Country’ is to promote awareness of and respect for Indigenous culture, a part of ending the history of silence and exclusion that has resulted in Indigenous disadvantage today,” Lois said. Lois is also recognised as an authentic Indigenous artist, whose artworks are one of a kind. “My artwork is based on legendary stories, and some current stories of my life, as well as the places I often visit and meditate at. When painting, I use the best options to tell the story in the imagery depicting the stories told to me by my ancestors. I paint with earthy colours as well as vibrant lively colours to give the feel of the place I am painting and its mood.” In association with Catherine Marciniak, ABC North Coast, Lois won the Byron Bay International Film Festival’s Best Local Film for Babe in the Reeds. It was broadcast on ABC Compass to open NAIDOC Week. She was also nominated for the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Awards, a finalist in the Promotion of Indigenous Recognition Award. To learn more about the history of Nyangbul country, to discover the sacred areas of this land its people, you can book a tour with Lois at www.aboriginalculturalconcepts. com. To prevent history from repeating itself, we must first learn from the lessons of past atrocities. Acknowledging mistakes and respecting the original custodians of the land, is something we can achieve to take a step forward, together, as one. www.byronlifemag.com 11

Inspiring small business success

Stone and Wood, a 100% Independent Regional Brewer

S

tarting from a simple dream, to stop ‘working for the man’, beer enthusiasts Brad, Jamie and Ross launched Stone and Wood Brewing Company in 2008. They built their first brewery in Byron and their head office is based in the Arts and Industry Estate. Determined to grow organically and stay true to their roots, the boys made the tough choice to invest in the local community and build a brand new brewery in the region instead of outsourcing their growth. This created local jobs and gives the whole region a story to be proud of.

Afendz, selling a brand and a way of life

A

fends is a tribute to how living in the Byronshire can breed a culture and forge a mentality as well as create a successful business and global brand. Declan Wise and Jono Salfiel started the company in 2006, beginning as a small screen-printing business. They created an edgy fashion label taking inspiration from the punk, hardcore, surfing and skateboarding community. Afends have now reached global acclaim and use this power to support causes they believe in like starting the hemp revolution. They also promote sustainability to their customers as well as the surfing and fashion industries.

Trip a Deal

B

est mates, Norm and Richard, started Trip a Deal in 2011 from Norm’s office in the Arts and Industry Estate. Their story began during their travels together when they noticed half empty planes, spare seats on tour buses and how many businesses had trouble filling the last few hotel rooms. They saw a gap in the market and with Richard’s marketing background combined with Norm’s passion for getting projects off the ground a unique concept was born. They could offer incredible discounts to bargain-loving travellers by filling these empty seats, tours and hotel rooms. They now employ over 50 people and are the fastest growing company in Australia, growing by 1100% in 2015 and were forecast to make $80 million in 2016.

"Millions of pieces of clothing are produced everyday. If you take sustainability seriously, be responsible, get vintage" At Mr Vintage, we aim to feed your inner creativity. The spark in your soul that is alive in the late hours of the night, the part of you that wants to jump in puddles, sing in the shower, dance in the rain. We love the quirky, the bold, the mismatched and the innovative. The people who don't follow fashion trends, they set them. How you dress is representative of your personality. You are unique, one in 7 billion, born out of the death of a star. Life's too short to wear boring clothes. Mr. Vintage is an Australian owned company that supplies vintage and retro clothing at very affordable prices. Our products are sourced from all around the world with quality, oneoff pieces, coming to us from our warehouses in Europe. We believe in the importance of recycling, not only for fashion but for the good of the earth. A Mr Vintage item will not tarnish with use, and we know this for certain because our clothes have already passed the test of time.

BUSINESSPROFILE

Is there anything better than slicing into a fresh loaf of locally made organic sourdough, topped with locally made organic butter and locally sourced honey? Or eating a bowl of locally made granola, topped with a local yoghurt and locally grown fruit? Luckily, the family folk at SPAR, Suffolk Park bring together a huge range of organic and locally-sourced food and produce, to make gathering your weekly nosh a fast, friendly and affordable experience. Locally owned and operated, Ben Kinzl and his brother-in-law, Justin Houghton run the business together, supported by their wives, Crystal and Annika. Ben and Crystal have two children, Journee and Taavi. Justin and Annika also have two, Anja and Zahli. Being both business men and family men, Ben and Justin understand the importance of providing healthy options for busy lifestyles, to give Byron families more time to enjoy the outdoors and less time hunting healthy ingredients. 16 www.byronlifemag.com

“We love the outdoors ourselves and we know how important family time is. I enjoy surfing and yoga, Justin loves kiteboarding and archery. But, above all, we both love spending time with our kids. “Because we are an independent, locally owned and operated supermarket, we can stock what is important to our local community. Fresh, locally-sourced produce, a range of organic and sustainably produced items, locally-made drinks and snacks plus a large selection of raw foods from cakes to chocolate and ice cream. Where possible, we provide organic alternatives to everyday items to give local families healthier options. “We try to keep everything as local as possible” Ben said. Ben and his sister, Annika, have lived in Suffolk Park since they were kids themselves. They grew up on a farm west of Kyogle. Their parents made the move closer to the beach after spending the majority of their weekends

visiting the area, and eventually built on a block of land in Suffolk Park where they still live today. Ben’s affiliation with SPAR started 10 years ago when it was a tiny supermarket with a fruit and vegetable shop next door. The owners at the time purchased the fruit and veg store, knocked down the walls, and incorporated a big produce section into SPAR, which Ben was hired to manage. While working, Ben was also studying a Bachelor of Business at Southern Cross University. After graduating and progressing to store manager, Ben purchased shares in half of the business. When the other half came up for sale, he decided it was a great opportunity to turn the business into a fully, family owned and operated venture, with Annika and Justin buying the remaining half of the business. With a passion for the local community, SPAR, Suffolk Park, supports local growers and producers. The range of locally-made items found within is extensive, from pizzas and

shop like a local in suffolk park smoked sausages to activated cakes, nuts, muesli’s and milk. The business also employs 20 locals and supports many community organisations, including the Suffolk Park Soccer Team, the Byron Bay Malibu Classic, the Suffolk Park Fire Brigade and the Byron Bay Hospital Charity Day. Ben and Justin say that giving back to the community is easy when it provides such an amazing lifestyle for them and their family.

“We are lucky to live so close to the beach, close to work and as a part of a chilled, caring community. We absolutely love living in Suffolk Park and couldn’t think of a better place to be raising our families. “It’s our pleasure to provide a platform for many of our passionate producers and suppliers to sell and we look forward to working with them in the future to provide our community with the best groceries around. Fresh certainly is best.

NIKKI MULING & DAN READMAN

Now We Are Home!

W

here eclectic bluesy tunes beat out onto the sidewalk lined with umbrellas, and people from all walks of life gather for their daily hit of coffee and chatter.

Dan said, “It just sort of happened, the process was very organic. With Nikki’s extensive background in hospitality and my business experience through owning a few gyms, buying the Bayleaf just made sense.”

With a reputation as one of Australia’s iconic eateries, Bayleaf Café embodies the very essence of Byron. A chilled ambience, the cleverly chic yet charmingly rustic design, music which touches your soul and wholesome food which fuels you from within. And the coffee? Legendary.

“I sold my businesses in Melbourne and we both dedicated ourselves fully to the Bayleaf. Looking back now, we realise this path was meant for us. We have been lucky in our lives that doors like this find a way of opening. We trust in the path ahead and believe that you create your own luck.”

So, what is its recipe for success? Well, put simply, it just makes you feel good. It leaves you with a smile on your face, and if anything, that’s the charm of Byron life.

Dan is a regular surfer and had adopted a wholefood and organic way of eating for many years. Infusing this lifestyle into the Bayleaf has been a natural progression, one which the staff embrace and customers cherish.

When owners, Nikki Muling and Dan Readman, decided that the Bayleaf needed renovating, they knew they had to tread carefully. It needed a breath of fresh air while still retaining its charisma. As Dan describes, the process was like baptism by fire. “We learnt very quickly that everyone had an opinion. Luckily at the completion of the renovations, the vast majority were really positive. We were careful to respect where the Bayleaf had come from, to retain what people loved about it, while at the same time inserting a bit of our own DNA in the style.” Local designer, Julie King, was able to take our ideas and refine them to represent a modern Byron.” Dan and Nikki are an example of a movement of city-dwelling Australians, escaping the urban rat race in search of a wholesome lifestyle for their family. The Victorians have had a connection with the Byron Shire for more than 25 years and found themselves constantly drawn to the area. The couple are regular groovers at Bluesfest. Dan proposed to Nikki on Tallow Beach and they were married on Friday Hut Road. Like many couples, they had a 10-year plan, but realised five years later that they were no closer to the end goal. With a desire to live a more connected life, the couple made the move to Byron Bay less than two years later, leaving behind family, friends and successful careers. “It took a lot of energy and resolve to make that move, to leave behind a life we had worked hard to build. The driving force behind that decision was lifestyle, community and to spend more hours of the day together,” Dan said. Dan and Nikki first fell in love with the Bayleaf Café as customers. Drawn in by its unique buzz and exceptional coffee. they became regulars and got to know the previous owners, Nico and Linda, well. Through conversation, they discovered that Nico wanted to focus on his roastery, and was considering selling the Bayleaf.

18 www.byronlifemag.com

“Our team love it because it gives them the opportunity to be creative. Everything is made from scratch and supplies are as local and organic as we can find in season. The number one rule though is that taste is king. There’s no point in making something healthy if it doesn’t taste good,” he said. Coming from arguably one of the most refined coffee capitals of the world, Nikki was excited to find that the coffee at Bayleaf Café was as extraordinary as anything she had experienced in Melbourne. It remains a huge part of the culture today, and now occupies its own funky brew space, the Bayleaf Brewbar. “We have a special relationship with Nico from Marvell Street Roasters. Our baristas visit the roastery for weekly tastings, and we receive the best critique we could ask for from Nico himself who visits to drink our coffee! “We curate consistency and we believe that’s what makes the perfect cup of coffee,” Nikki said. Allowing an organic synergy between work and play, Dan and Nikki have embraced the Byron lifestyle as their own. They love the surf, sun, sand, and most importantly, the people. Their two daughters grow their own vegetables, gather eggs from the chickens and dad helps wrangle any snakes which make their way into the coop. They have time together in the afternoons, time which in Melbourne was dissolved into a mist of motorway congestion. Time now, has taken on a whole new meaning. Stress has been replaced with surf. Smog has been replaced with sunshine and time stuck in traffic is now time which they walk along the beach. The bay had always been calling, now they are home.

Luliia & Sacha Batcheldor iving its clients the ability to design and build innovative, handcrafted homes is part of what makes Natural Building & Design Co. the eco-friendly choice in sustainable luxury living. It was almost inevitable that Sacha Batcheldor would make substantial contributions to the building and design industry locally in Byron Bay. A 10th generation Australian, his early ancestors paved their way through the Byron Shire as bridge engineers and farmers. His grandparents, uncle and father were all master builders, sparking his interest and creativity. With a plethora of tools available in his father’s workshop, Sacha explored design and construction from an early age, crafting boats, furniture, tree houses, skateboard ramps and more. His early mentors suggested that he gain a trade qualification in carpentry, to have his skills officially recognised. But not completely satisfied in learning only local building techniques, after completing his building license, Sacha built a boat and sailed around the world.

20 www.byronlifemag.com

“I was able to learn from ancient traditional and modern building techniques; such as stone masonry and bamboo structures in Bali, earthquake-proof structures in New Zealand and Hawaii, tropical and subtropical architecture and design in Asia, as well as snow and alpine techniques in America.” Upon returning to the Byron region, Sacha worked alongside his uncle, from Byron Bay Building, on a range of award-winning projects in Byron Shire and Hinterland over the past 15 years. He had also graduated with a degree in Engineering and Applied Science. “Having teamed up with good local builders in the area to complete such projects as the outdoor education facility at Interaction, Rainbow Ridge Steiner School, and the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, I began to realize the value and legacy that well-informed design and building can have on enriching local communities,” he said. Sacha’s company, Natural Building & Design, focuses on thoughtful design to enhance a

building’s performance and function. He has developed an interest in improving designs that reflect a person’s aspirations while delivering structures which are also environmentally responsible. “Investing in sustainable development projects is essential to contribute to the future health of our planet for generations to come. My business donates 1% of its profit to such organizations as Bush Heritage, Earth Planet and Rainforest Rescue which are Australian initiatives, committed to protecting and enhancing the quality of life on this planet in perpetuity,” Sacha said. For space to become a sanctuary, design and function are imperative. avigating the home loan market can be a daunting prospect. With a plethora of lenders to choose from, how can you be sure you are getting the best deal? If your strategy is to head straight to the bank, you may be missing out on some significant benefits. Helping people to purchase their own white picket fenced property is Janice Ryan’s passion. With more than 30 years in the finance industry, including more than 23 years combined with Westpac, NAB and ANZ, she knows the tricks of the trade to assist people from all walks of life to get ahead in the property market. “Like a kid in a candy store, you wouldn’t expect to have to choose from only three different types of lollies, when the shop around the corner has a selection of more than a hundred. A similar comparison can be made between banks and mortgage brokers. A bank will often only have one lender to choose from, whereas a mortgage broker can have more than 30, resulting in a myriad of loan possibilities. “When I worked for a bank, I had to match our clients with the loan option that was ‘closest’ to what they required. As a mortgage broker, I have the flexibility of tailoring lending options to match my clients’ situation perfectly, whether they are first home buyers, home owners opening up equity to invest in further property or regular investors,” Janice said. Being able to offer home buyers better finance options is what inspired Janice to create her own business, White Picket Fence Finance. Unlike a bank, she doesn’t have set office hours. She makes herself available at times which suit her clients and prides herself in offering attentive, friendly service. A born and raised country girl, Janice loves horses and is a member of the Bangalow Show Society. Famously, Janice is also Bangalow’s reigning camel racing champion! Due to equine influenza a few years ago, there was a total ban on transporting horses. The Bangalow Show decided that the show must go on, and replaced horse racing with camel racing. Janice progressed through the heats and won the final, beating experienced cowboys. “I have been riding horses for more than 46 years but it was my first time on a camel,” she laughs. Locally, most people know Janice for her twice-daily walks with her two dogs. “I love this area, the tranquility and the beach. If I’m ever feeling stressed, I can walk outside, feel the sun on my face, smell the salt in the air and everything is right with the world again,” she said. So, the million-dollar question is: Is a mortgage broker expensive? Surprisingly, Janice’s services won’t cost you anything. She doesn’t charge a fee, her services are paid for by the lender. She also assists clients all over Australia, not just within the Byron Shire. So, to discover if you can be better off financially by refinancing, it won’t cost you a cent to find out. The dream of owning your own white picket fence may be a closer reality than you realise.

Mojosurf NATHAN FOLKES

A

fter his parents separated, Nathan (Nat) Folkes spent much of his life travelling around Australia with his Dad and brothers. His journey started locally in Terranora, Burringbar and Mullum, and took him to more than 20 homes before he was 15, as far away as Albany in Western Australia. What every destination had in common was an amazing beach within walking distance. This connection with the ocean would pave the way for his future. “My surfing obsession started in primary school at about 7 years of age, surfing with Matty Smith and my bro on borrowed backyard boards as a grommet, then scoring my first custom via my Dad’s mate, the legendary Greg Kerr (Kerby).

After leaving school at 14, Nat surfed as much as possible. He lived on bare essentials until getting a job as a chippy at 16. The income filled his pockets and fueled the desire to travel seeking good surf and great times. This led to the realisation that a normal job on the tools wouldn’t cut it. “In October of 1998 a mate, Dan, and I kicked off Mojosurf, doing five day learn to surf adventures from Sydney to Byron Bay. “Mojosurf was born with one old-school minivan and seven boards.” From those humble beginnings, an empire was born. Mojosurf is now a global brand, operating in New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia, offering a range of experiences from basic surfing lessons to snow adventures and 90 day surf camps. Not limited to entrepreneurial opportunities on the water, Nat and his partners purchased 36 acres of land in Byron. His vision was to have a place where he could grow good food for his surf camps with space for his kids to play. Farming wasn’t his strength so his brother-in-law, 22 www.byronlifemag.com

Jason, joined the team and Byron Bay Harvest Organic Food Farm was created. Nat’s brother, Simon, also runs the farm with Jason With a bounty of organic herbs and vegetables, plus free range chickens, Hub Café was a natural business progression. On Fletcher Street in Byron, Hub is an energetic and vibey space where you can chill on a hay bail and blow the froth off a hot or cold one. The food cart blends coffee and food with surf gear, lessons, bike and board hire and local excursions. Throughout his worldwide adventures, Nat has had wife, Kristie and their three children, India, Honey and Zeke, by his side. “Mojosurf has been an integral part of our lives for more than 18 years and it’s just what we do. At any time we can be together in Indonesia for months growing the Mojosurf products or away in Europe expanding the brand. The kids have all been involved since nappy days from building sand castles on the beach while I taught surfing to now being involved in the farming, Mojosurf or Hub café.” Nat said, “There’s no guarantees or secrets to success here but hard work, being creative and flexible, finding a way. Stay positive, build a great team and never giving up on your dreams, is key. “It’s been fun.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MURRAY JOHNSON

“From the first wave on the first day the thrill of surfing and all the goodness it brought was totally addictive. From sharing waves and stories as groms to global adventures, being challenged by the ocean, escaping the everyday and having an awesome time with friends and family was such a buzz,” Nat said.

sk Luke Andrews what he loves about skydiving, and his response says it all.

Skydive Australia has 21 drop zones across Australia and New Zealand, but Luke believes that the jump in Byron is the jewel in the crown.

“It’s just freaking awesome!”

“The 15,000 feet jump is the highest in Australia, it takes roughly 30 minutes to reach that height. The flight is almost as good as the jump because of the stunning scenery of the Byron Shire. An ideal time of year to jump is during whale migration time as you get a completely new perspective of the whales from the air!”

“The whole process of a skydive is an incredible experience, but free falling from 15,000 feet for more than one minute is something everyone should feel at least once in their lifetime.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MURRAY JOHNSON

“Everyone’s skydive experience is different, but the range of emotions the body goes through, from fear to excitement, to an almost euphoric feeling when the parachute opens, is what it’s all about.” Luke grew up in Sawtell, a small coastal town just south of Coffs Harbour. After leaving school he joined the Army under the Gap Year scheme and served as a rifleman for 12 months. He studied abroad at San Diego State University for six months and played rugby for their College team. Deciding he needed a lifestyle change, Luke moved to the Gold Coast to study business at Griffith University. After graduating, he found himself in the adventure tourism industry and has been hooked on the adrenalin ever since. He is the National Sales Manager for Skydive Australia, managing all the regional business development managers the business has across Australia, as well as working with inbound tour operators, domestic travel agencies and more.

Skydiving is an experience that almost everyone can enjoy. The skydiving team have had the pleasure of assisting several celebrities with their jumps, including the twins, James and John Phelps from the Harry Potter movies, Michael Slater, Lara Bingle as well as television personalities from The Block, The Footy Show, The Bachelor and Married at First Sight. But the team get a lot of pleasure from helping people from all walks of life with their jumps. “It’s always cool to see the older generation taking their first jump,” Luke said. From the wild and rugged hinterland to the picture-postcard beaches, take a leap of faith with Skydive Australia and see Byron Bay, like you’ve never seen before. www.byronlifemag.com 23

The Academy MARTIAL ARTS

“Every day that you walk through the doors you become a slightly better version of yourself. That is our goal.”

W

hile the term ‘martial arts’ may conjure up images of cage rumbles and Kung-Fu kicks, only a small percentage of people who train will translate those skills into a physical battle. Extreme Martial Arts co-owner, Andrew Dennis, explains how his facility is a sanctuary for families to transform into better versions of themselves and how their new brand, The Academy, is reflective of their community vision.

Andrew commented, “Like most entrepreneurs, we saw an opportunity that aligned with our passion.”

“A consistent fitness regime is essential to living a long and fulfilling life. Martial Arts is an amazing path to take because it ‘kills many birds with one stone.’ People who train in martial arts learn some pretty amazing skills, but the cherry on the top is the amazing body transformation as well as meeting new people, feeling safer and increased self-confidence.

MEET THE COACHES

If I could describe The Academy in one word it would be family. People are amazed to see 50 kids sitting on the mats daily. Many of our new adult members end up being Mum or Dad who used to watch from the sidelines, then thought, ‘I’d love to give that a go.’ The kids love it when their parents start training too, it forms a real bond,” he said.

24

Andrew’s business partner is Matt McCourt. The Academy isn’t their first business venture together, having worked together in creating successful franchise in the travel industry with more than 30 outlets across Australia and New Zealand. Along the journey, Andrew and Matt realised they shared a similar passion in martial arts, Andrew in MMA and Matt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. What started as a mere conversation about running a gym together led to where the business is today. www.byronlifemag.com

Whether you are looking to build strength, lose body fat or pursue a journey as a martial artist, the Academy has a range of classes, facilities and world-class coaches to guide you in achieving your goals.

Pablo Rodriguez and Jared Flick head up the Striking department. Pablo has 9 years of experience in Muay Thai, K-1, Kickboxing and Western Boxing in Chile. His classes offer high intensity full body fitness with technical elements of striking for beginners to professional level. Jared Flick is a local Muay Thai hero and offers classes in traditional Muay Thai. His passion is training people who are looking to test themselves in competition but hardly leaves the mats as there is a steady stream of beginners and intermediates taking advantage of his one-on-one PT sessions. Head coach of the MMA classes, Daniel ‘Jacare’ Almeida, also heads up the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program. Daniel is a third degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with 19 years of international training, coaching and fighting experience. Daniel has a dedicated team of assistant coaches who help run The Academy’s kids program which has produced numerous world champions. Peter Martin heads up the strength and conditioning program,

Ryan “Rino” Flaherty also offers intense full-body workouts to the family. The entire coaching staff is supported by Jehanne Mustart and Lisa Quigg who keep the members happy, do all of the essential behind-the-scenes work and keep The Academy running. With more than 60 classes each week, from beginner to professional, there is a class to suit every level of expertise and fitness level.

WHAT DOES THE ACADEMY OFFER? The three main components of training are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, striking and strength. Striking consists of Muay Thai, Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. Most members who train will never compete, but attending a few classes a week will result in a fighter’s physique.

children have competed in America and claimed world championship titles. Other programs are on offer to help you conquer your health and fitness goals. The Academy has recently wrapped up an eight week body transformation challenge which culminated in impressive results. A female-only beginner program called Fierce Females kicks off midApril, where like-minded women can meet and sweat it out in a fun, friendly and supportive environment. The Academy’s famous Wimp2Warrior is a 22 week professional fight camp for everyday people. At its culmination, successful students step into the cage and compete for the first time in front of friends and family. “I have seen some of the most inspiring and amazing transformations with people who dedicate themselves to this program which is now a worldwide phenomenon,” Andrew said.

Strength and conditioning is a great supplement to martial arts training, but is also effective in achieving a number of health and fitness goals.

However the most exciting and fastest-growing program is the kids. Group classes are held six days per week for children aged from 4 to 12. They can learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, or both; teaching discipline, structure, self-worth and compete in a healthy and safe environment. Family membership discounts are available

Multiple classes per day are held for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is a grappling sport and one of the fastest-growing martial arts in the world. It is extremely effective at building fitness as well as strength and self-confidence. For trainer, Matt, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a family affair with all five of his children who train religiously. Hit Like a Girl KENDALL BARNES “You hit like a girl.”

N

o longer is that phrase profoundly disempowering. What was once used as an insult is now embraced like an anthem of girl-power, because, as Personal Trainer, Kendall Barnes explains, it’s not the girl in the fight but the fight in the girl that counts. “The name, ‘Hit like a Girl’ was extremely appealing for my women’s boxing classes, as I wanted to train and empower women to feel strong and powerful. I want them to turn up and feel completely comfortable, not intimidated. We can throw some serious punches and are not to be under-estimated!” Not only is Kendall a PT, she has a Bachelor of Exercise Science and is a Remedial Masseuse. Her passion is, helping clients who have niggling injuries become strong, through exercise and massage therapy, and hopes to expand her business to include a gym as well as a massage rehab facility. “I have been a full-time personal trainer for seven years and specialise in women’s health and fitness. I have a background in anatomy and the biomechanics of movement, so I furthered my study in remedial massage to be able to help people recover from injury.” Kendall explains that most people have some sort of everyday pain in their body, whether it be an aching lower back, strained knee, or an overused shoulder. She helps her clients to identify their pain and show them how to eliminate it through targeted training. “Pain can often stop people from doing their ordinary everyday activities, and can stop them from exercising, but specific training can help eliminate this pain.” “You can’t wipe the smile off my face when a client tells me how much it means to them when they can bend over and pick up their children without lower back pain, or run without knee pain.” “These are small changes that have a massive positive impact on someone else’s quality of life. That smile for me is a reminder that I am in the perfect job for me,” she said.

“Most people wouldn’t know that I have a massive fear of public speaking and being the centre of attention. I had to overcome that fear, while teaching classes. When the classes got big I just had to throw myself in the deep end! I usually joke a lot and like to text out funny motivational rhymes to lighten the mood,” she said. Kendall’s ultimate dream is to one day, combine an indoor/ outdoor gym with massage and treatment facilities, so she can offer a complete training, health, and rehabilitation package. Hit like a girl, feel fighting fit, and become the best version of you. 26 www.byronlifemag.com

LET’S NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH. NOT EVERYONE LOVES BEING A MUM. WELL, NOT ALL OF THE TIME ANYWAY.

I

t may sound harsh, and possibly a controversial way to open an article which could have been full of positivity, sunshine and lollipops. But the reality, is that motherhood isn’t always positive all of the time. And to be fair, sometimes we need to hear that. We need to hear that, yes, other mums do struggle.

Send Love This Mothers Day

Otherwise we continually compare ourselves to seemingly perfect women who manage to go to the gym, have a successful career, their children are little darlings and somehow there is an entire month’s worth of organic home-made meals prepared in the freezer. Some days I pat myself on the back for managing to brush my hair. And while Instagram would have you believe that everyone else is always #winning at life, sometimes it’s good to know that other mums are having a rough day too.

My toddlers have done everything from trying to vacuum the contents of the toilet, to taking my hair straighteners into the bath to play ‘crocodile’ (obviously not plugged in). They have coated my home in egg and flour because ‘that’s what you do with chicken’ and have smothered the cat in peanut butter. Unfortunately our cat was called Jelly and they thought that peanut butter and jelly made sense. Looking back, I’m actually pretty impressed at their thought process with that one, however at the time, it wasn’t a fun moment. I can’t even begin to describe where I was still finding peanut butter weeks later.

comedian, author, journalist and mother; each of these roles is as challenging as the next, all equally providing different ways for Mandy to pitch her voice. “In comedy I can be irreverent, outrageous and immediate. In my written pieces, I can use more pathos, develop a more informed piece. It’s amazing how much more controversial you can be in print. I feel very privileged to be afforded such a diversity of outlets for my ideas and opinions,” Mandy said. As a feminist from a very young age, Mandy never had a stereotypical or straight idea of what her family was going to look like. Selfreliant, she never had the expectation that she would need a man to look after her. The father of her eldest daughter was struggling as a heroin addict. Mandy had just discovered she was pregnant with her second child when she decided to proceed as a single mother. Her second separation was more painful, as they had been together for eight years and had a child together. Mandy’s first two children also saw him as a father-figure, which made the decision to separate harder. Her eldest daughter stayed with Mandy full time, but the other two moved between her second husband and Mandy, week at a time. Mandy has been with her third husband, John, for nine years and together they have a 7-year-old daughter. John brought with him his daughter from a previous relationship, who is the same age as Mandy’s eldest daughter. Mandy draws much of the inspiration for her comedy from the passion, pain, laughter and love she draws from her uniquely blended family. “Making a blended family work is complex, and to top it off there is so little written about it. You feel a bit in the wilderness when it comes to making it work.” 28 www.byronlifemag.com

LIFE OF A BYRON BAY MUM

“As adults, we want to believe that all separations are ‘best for the kids’. I think that’s a crock. My separations were better for me. I have to accept responsibility, that my inability to be happy or function in a relationship with their Dad, created a scar that kids carry into adulthood,” she said.

to dark places I never thought I had to go to. For years, I thought she was going to die. I felt so powerless. I felt so much to blame.

While many mothering books explain what to do and how to do it during the first few years of life, there isn’t as much literature on dealing with the complexities of children becoming adults. Mandy shares the raw, honest, truth about her struggle of raising a daughter with an eating disorder.

“These days she has a wide group of friends, she has plans for what she wants in her life. She is uniquely wonderful and amazing. Probably the funniest person I have ever met. I am very proud of her. I am proud of all my kids for different reasons. Unbelievable that from one woman’s kiln you can throw so many different pots!”

“Dealing with my daughter’s eating disorder and anxiety almost broke me. It was so excruciatingly painful to see someone you love to be so at risk. Here was my darling girl who was talking about not wanting to be here. She felt the world didn’t have a place for her.” “It was a very dark time and I have to say the support available out there for adolescent mental health is lousy. I didn’t want a help-line, I needed someone to show me a way through. She and I did it together.” Mandy continued to say, “People would ask these questions, ‘how’s your daughter doing?’, and their kid would be leaving school and going to university. My daughter would be unable to leave her room or hadn’t eaten for weeks.” “What do you say? Once I said ‘She’s good this week. She hasn’t talked about killing herself.’ I wanted to see what they would say. And I was sick of lying or covering up. Like her illness was something shameful. It wasn’t,” she said. “Ours is a positive story, because after six years of extreme, emotional, hardship we came through. It’s never completely over, and going through that changes you. I have been

Mandy recalls her frustration toward a system which lacked the proper systems to help. “I remember once, my daughter had a very bad episode of suicidality so her psychiatrist told us to take her for an admission at a local adolescent mental health unit. The admissions officer speaks with us and then turns to my daughter and says, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this but I don’t think you should go in there right now because there’s a lot of girls trying to hang themselves.’ We were gob smacked. I said, ok we’ll go home. I turned to my daughter in the car and said, are you ok? She just says ‘Yeah. They could have said they were f****** full.’ We laughed till we cried.” “There are no easy solutions for adolescents suffering anxiety and depression. You must learn to be non-reactive. Not to judge. And to let go. I struggled with that. I told a lot of mental health workers to go f*** themselves. I am sure they remember me. What I was doing was protecting my girl at her most

vulnerable. What loving mother wouldn’t do the same?” Approaching 50, living regionally, and being a comedian, Mandy laughs that the combination should be a recipe for unemployment, but her career is stronger than ever. “Part of it is that, as a woman, I speak of issues and experiences that aren’t covered by the average 30 something white boy comedian who’s still enamoured with his dick and the tinder app on his phone.” Mandy has teamed up with friend, Ellen Briggs, to create the hilarious show, Women Like Us. There are 34 shows across Australia so far and almost every show has sold out. One more show is planned locally, at the Park Lane Theatre in Lennox on September 30. You can grab a ticket from communityspaces. com.au, or see where else they are performing, including shows at the Sydney Comedy Festival, by visiting womenlikeus. com.au. Because all women, just like us, need a good laugh and good friends to get us through. www.byronlifemag.com 29

Oren Siedler

LIFE OF A BYRON BAY MUM

“THE PROBLEM WITH NO NAME” WAS ARTICULATED BY BETTY FRIEDAN IN 1963, AS THE EXPECTATION WOMEN EXPERIENCED TO FEEL FULFILLED BY ONLY THEIR ROLES AS WIVES AND MOTHERS. 50 years later, it seems, ‘the problem with no name’ has shifted to the paradigm of needing to ‘have it all’.

S

huttled back and forth between the bustling Big Apple and sleepy Mullumbimby, Oren Siedler’s childhood was like no other. Little did she know, her fascinating double-life upbringing would one day become the subject of a critically-acclaimed documentary. Born in New York City, Oren immigrated with her mother and stepfather to Australia, who set up a Buddhist retreat in the Byron Shire in the 1970s. She studied film production and screen studies at the University of Technology, Sydney, where she lived in her 20s. Driven and career-oriented, Oren travelled the world as an independent documentary filmmaker. She spent a year in Canada finishing the post production on a feature documentary titled Bruce & Me, which would be aired by ABC, a chronicle of life on the road with her outlaw father. Once the film was wrapped up, Oren returned to Australia and settled back in the Byron Shire. Oren is now a mother of two daughters, 7-yearold Remi and 8-year-old Bayla, who lead seemingly tranquil childhoods in comparison to Oren’s upbringing. Oren was a stay-at-home mother for the first four years, switching from a driven career-woman to devoted mother. But as her children grew, Oren felt the desire to start working again.

30 www.byronlifemag.com

“I knew I couldn’t travel the world and make films anymore. I’m now self-employed on my terms, and have structured my career to allow my film work to fit in with family life. I realise I’m fortunate to be in a situation which allows me to do that. “But I feel as a woman, there is an expectation in today’s society to ‘do it all’ or ‘have it all,’ and it’s not always a positive expectation. “There is something very empowering about being remunerated for doing something well, and that certainly adds to the internal drive of wanting a successful career, but I’m not sure if that hunger comes from a feeling of self-fulfillment, or from a societal expectation,” she said. Oren commented, “In the generations before ours, it was enough for a woman to be a good mum, housekeeper and cook. Women were praised for staying at home and being great parents. Now we feel as though we should be great parents, successful career women, great wives, fit and active. The idealistic, perfect existence, where we do it all and have it all. “Is the covert pressure and desire to have it all actually healthy? Do we really have it all, or are we just stressed out and exhausted on the inside while portraying perfect lives on the outside?” Oren has offered food for thought on a subject many mothers ponder. Perhaps the only way we will feel as though we ‘have it all’ is to redefine what success truly is.

Wildly Donna

LIFE OF A BYRON BAY MUM

“I BELIEVE A SEXY BODY IS A BIRTHRIGHT!”

S

ince 2010, Donna Wild has dedicated her life to supporting other people wanting to lose weight. Diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at 13 years of age and then mature rheumatoid arthritis at 17, Donna, who had been dancing since she was 3, was told that if she continued dancing her body would be crippled by age 22. After taking arthritis medication for a year, Donna was admitted to hospital after vomiting blood due to an ulcerated and split stomach lining. At the tender age of 13, she decided then and there that she would rather live with pain, and fight to find natural remedies, rather than medicate her way through life. At 18, she was still drug-free but still in much pain. She carried 13 kilograms of excess weight, she was lonely, unhappy and aimless and figured that this was how her life would be for the rest of her life. Until one day, she made a life-changing decision. A simple decision to be happy. “I moved cities, surrounded myself with like-minded people, and changed what I ate. I unintentionally dropped 10 kilograms just by doing what felt great. ‘I love fruit, I’ll eat fruit.’ ‘It’d feel great to run on the beach today,’ so I ran on the beach. I remember the first time I went for a run in that period of my life and it felt orgasmic, my whole body tingled with pleasure, I ran smiling and occasionally my stride turned into skips,” Donna said. Donna has been thriving on a vegan diet for more than 14 years, and has helped other people to shape their bodies, through the chemistry of food, to increase metabolism naturally. She is the published author of, Your Thriving Plant-Based Life, Everything You Want to Know about Being Healthy, Sexy, and Vegan! While balancing motherhood and her career, dance is also still a big part of Donna’s life. Two years ago, she was crowned as Australian Champion in Salsa with her dance partner. “My daughter, Ever, was 9 months old when we won the state title, and still breast feeding. She was with me for the entire journey to competition. I had a part-time nanny who would come to training, Ever would dance with her nanny on the side of the studio,” Donna said. Through Donna’s weight loss programme, Food Dynamics for Weight Loss, her vision is to eradicate the confusion around food, to stop the yo-yo diet trend and suffering. Described as ‘the next big thing in weight loss,’ you can find more information on her programme and speaking events at wilddonna.com Because everyone deserves to feel sexy in their own body.

Baylee Wood

LIFE OF A BYRON BAY MUM

BAYLEE WOOD WAS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD WHEN SHE VISITED AUSTRALIA FOR THE FIRST TIME.

H

er parents made the trip from San Diego, California, to visit ‘Uncle Rusty.’

Most Byron locals would be familiar with the name, Rusty Miller. A local legend and pro surfer in the 1960’s, the talkative regularfooter needs no introduction. Originally from California, Rusty moved to Australia to escape the war. Rusty and his wife, Tricia, raised their daughters in the hinterland of Byron. For Baylee and her family, it was a refreshing change from the freeways, shopping malls and over-crowded beaches of California. Here, they were eating fruit fresh off the tree, going for bush walks, seeing an abundance of nature in the wild and surfing. Her parents fell in love with the Byron Shire instantly, and left everything they knew in California behind to give their children the best childhood imaginable. Now, herself a mother of two boys, Preston and Hudson, Baylee is grateful to her parents for that sacrifice, as it means she too can raise her children in a natural haven. “I will forever be filled with gratitude to my parents for making that decision because my husband, Jacob, and I, now have the privilege of giving our own children the gift of a wild and wonderful childhood. We swim in the local beaches and creeks almost every day, we eat fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables, we know our farmers, we love our neighbours and we trust our community. We are so blessed to call this place home,” Baylee said. Baylee has been a working stay-at-home Mum since the birth of her first son, Preston. Her career prior to motherhood was in events management and marketing. She specialises in building communities around brands and organising events. From home, she has created two successful businesses, Confetti Lane, tailored toward weddings and special events, and Mama + Me, a celebration of mothers. Baylee is the creator of the popular Mama + Me Markets, held quarterly in Mullumbimby. “Mama + Me was born when I realised how many incredibly talented local mothers there are in Byron who hand-make kids clothing, toys,

32 www.byronlifemag.com

books and baby products. I set out to promote these mamas and pave the way for them to reach their local target market. “I also wanted to educate the local families about the fantastic range of local family businesses so they could have the opportunity to shop locally. So I created The Mama + Me Markets,” she said. “My beautiful, well-travelled cousin came to visit us a couple of years ago and after only being in Byron a couple of days she said to me, ‘More than anywhere else I’ve been, in Byron, people care more about who you are on the inside than what you look like on the outside.’ Baylee agreed and said she couldn’t have said it better herself.

makemeover! BEFORE

has been created by: Byron Beauty Bar Hair Artist : Zoe Lamy Make Up Artist : Ingrid Berg MODEL : Shelby

Shelby had been housebound for three months after surgery and was ready for a refresh and a change. Shelby has long hair and wasn’t ready for the big chop but was certainly ready for a revamp. Zoe suggested going mid length with layers to give her more bounce and a low maintenance style. As a Mum of five, this style suits Shelby’s busy life perfectly.

STEP 1: Cutting Shelby has had long hair for 10 years and never really did much with it. Zoe and Shelby decide to go for a four-inch chop with longer layers and shape around the face, as Shelby often puts her hair up into a ponytail. Zoe used Shu Uemura Muroto volume shampoo followed by Urban moisture conditioner, to give Shelby a light-weight root with smooth mid-length to ends.

STEP 2: Styling

AFTER

To finish, Zoe did Byron Beauty Bar’s signature brushes blow dry giving Shelby that effortless bounce. With a small change came a drastic difference. Shelby looked and felt amazing.

34 www.byronlifemag.com

STEP 3: Make Up To create Shelby’s look, Ingrid prepped her skin with Mecca Soft Focus primer, to smooth and hydrate. Followed by Harlotte After Glow foundation, for a luminous finish. Ingrid used Becca undereye brightening concealer to colour correct and Nars liquid bronzer in Laguna to sculpt Shelby’s cheekbones along with Nars South Beach multiple stick for a beautiful glow.

Shelby’s brows were filled in with Nars Blondie for a fuller shape to compliment her bouncy blow dry. Ingrid created a soft, bronze eye, using the Urban Decay Naked palette with some MAC pigment in Tan to highlight the lid and added extra volume to the lash line with individual lashes by ModelRock.

To flatter Shelby’s gorgeous olive skin, Ingrid chose Grace Audacious lipstick by Nars and set her complexion with RMS translucent powder and Urban Decay all nighter setting spray.

Bottoms Up FEELING HEAVY, LETHARGIC AND AN UNDERLYING SENSE OF ‘SOMETHING IS JUST NOT RIGHT?’

W

hen we look for a solution, often our first thought leads to what we have put in our mouths. While good nutrition is certainly a key to good health, many of us forget to consider what we are eliminating from the rear. Or more to the point, what is left behind. A colonic can allow people to reclaim their health and vitality, as explained by Sue Wilson and Tracey Livingstone from Bottoms Up. “A Bottoms Up colonic is what we refer to as a closed system. It means we cleanse at a cellular level, offering hydration and nutrition therapy to assist in regaining health. There is no mess, bad smell or embarrassment. Your dignity is assured and it is an amazing therapy to heal mind, body and spirit,” Sue said. Sue is the founder of Bottoms Up, setting up her first clinic in the bush between Mackay and the Whitsundays in 2005. Clinics are now located throughout Queensland as well as in South Australia and the first clinic in New South Wales, locally in Lismore.

“I desperately wanted to get the word out of improved gut health cleansing, fermented and whole food nutrition for people to reclaim their health from many areas of disease that we are experiencing in this modern world,” she said. “To do this I chose franchising as a platform. To give support to our therapists while at the same time giving them the opportunity to make a difference in their community.” Tracey is the franchise owner of Bottoms Up Colonics, Lismore and a Colon Hydrotherapist. “I was looking for answers for my own health. To me, colonics made a lot of sense for cleansing and detoxing your body of built-up waste that can make you sick. “I had evolved from treating the outside to treating the inside. When I see such great results from my clients, I know that I have made the right choice. Colonics create the environment for the body to heal itself, you can’t get much better than that,” Tracey said.

Colonic hydrotherapy is a natural and safe method of detoxing which has been used throughout history. Bottoms Up use a closed system with TGA approved devices and disposable kits for peace of mind. Bottoms Up Colonics Lismore take a holistic approach to cleansing the colon with the successful 21 day cleanse. “A lot of us can relate to the frustration of a ‘weekend cleanse’ to get well and lose weight, only for it to have minimal effect. “Our cleanse comes back to the importance of having a healthy gut, not just the right bacteria but also the home for bacteria to thrive in. During the three weeks, the cleanse gives your body the opportunity to rest, to repair the gut wall. With guided nutrition, you also have the opportunity to form good habits of making healthier choices.” Eliminate the waste, allow your body to heal and feel life flow from within. Isn’t it time you thought about ‘getting flushed?’

Bytes of Byron B

ytes of Byron is introducing Eco Dental Surgery (that doesn’t cost the earth) to the Byronshire. They are a pioneer in this field of dentistry. Bytes of Byron was started three years ago and has since expanded to six branches, from Ballina to Melbourne, with a new surgery currently under construction in Lismore.

eco dentistry

Eco dentistry works in three ways. The first is to adopt green office practices, which cover everything from using energy efficient LED lights to steam sanitising equipment. They use only biodegradable and carbon neutral products, VOC paints, eco-inverter air-conditioning and are digital, paperless, recycling all waste and packaging. The second principal is the way in which Byron Bytes conducts its dentistry. They use exclusively BPA free white fillings, safely remove old mercury fillings and offer digital x-rays with 80% less radiation, totally eliminating chemical solutions. Lastly, Bytes of Byron dentists are a team of highly experienced professionals that offer comprehensive cosmetic and general dentistry with a more holistic approach.

alternative medicine.

Always looking for new ideas and technology Dr Jon has travelled the world working, bringing his specialist knowledge back to the Byron shire community. He believes in treating the body, mind and spirit, adopting a wealth of worldly practices from Shaman theory to Free Radicals therapy. Dr Jon has also created his own dental health products and remedies.

Dr Nigel Cluer has been practicing dentistry for over 25 years and understands how oral health is connected to the overall health of an individual, in particular the connection between gum disease and heart disease. Nigel is a pioneer in holistic and biological dentistry. Setting up Brunswick Holistic Dentistry 25 years ago, he sold his practice a few years ago and well known in the local community. He works with his patients to maintain the alkaline state and digestive tract, which is fundamental to overall health and immunity to disease.

Dr Leigh Bayliss is originally from Nottingham in the UK. He emigrated to Australia in 2009 and subsequently ran a successful private practice in Airlie Beach. Dr Bayliss has always been a staunch advocate of amalgam free dentistry and treating patients with a holistic approach. His philosophy fits in perfectly with Byron’s first Eco dentist and broader skills include a keen interest in Orthodontics.

HOME&GARDEN

S

urviving WW2 and escaping Poland, Adam Grabowski’s grandparents are the inspiration behind his sustainable gardening aquaponics invention, Flo Gardens. “I spent a lot of my childhood at my mum’s parents place. Their backyard is my inspiration. It was an average size yard, yet it flourished with fruit and vegetables. Cooking was a family experience and I’ll never forget the smells and smiles that came from the pleasure and pride which went into every meal.” Now married with three children of his own, Adam is passionate about developing his range of backyard aquaponic ecosystems, designed to provide a sustainable source of both seafood and vegetables from any backyard. “I wanted my kids to know where their food came from so I started converting my average suburban block into an aquaponics garden. I believe growing our own food is the future of food in this country and globally,” he said. Adam met his wife, Zerina, while he was living in a gypsy wagon he had built himself. Zerina was couch-surfing, travelling the world teaching Bollywood dance, a passion she still teaches today. They met at a party where the theme was ‘wear anything but clothes’ and kissed under a full moon. With a growing business and three children aged six and under, Priya, Suni and Latika, life

can get hectic, but Zerina is constantly inspired by Adam’s relentless passion for his vision. Adam’s system, a Flo Garden, uses less water than a traditional veggie patch, yet the basic module holds 40 plants, 25 fish and 18 cray fish. Because the system is modular, it can be doubled, tripled or more. It is the only system in the world which is self-cleaning, and thanks to design advice from Zerina, it is aesthetically pleasing. Adam commented, “The fruit and veggies are the most nutritious you can find and they taste amazing. The fish tastes so clean and there are no risks of heavy metals like ocean fish. Our girls love feeding the fish, picking the veggies and helping Zerina prepare the food. I love that they are so involved in this process.” Adam’s prototype has recently been perfected and is now ready to be shared with families across Australia. A crowdfunding campaign will be launched on September 2, as well as a local launch alongside the soft launch on September 3 at the Botanical Bazaar in the Gold Coast. Be one of the first to experience this incredibly natural and nutritious way of growing your own food and let Flo Garden provide for you and your family for years to come.

We love plants and gardens, and everything that goes with them

f I had my way, growing plants would be something that everyone did. It would be as natural as going to the beach, or grabbing a coffee, or watching TV. The Eden at Byron vision is that every person will want to grow plants for food, for habitat, and for the sheer joy to be found from bringing more plants into their lives. I was chatting to a young mother the other day who described how her 3-year-old cradled each little beetroot seedlng in his hands and kissed it before tucking it into the freshly prepared garden bed. How wonderful is that? And it’s really exciting for us to see how indoor plants have become such an important part of interior design.

Open 9am – 5pm August – May

Everyone who works at Eden at Byron is a bit plant crazy. We make sure that all the plants we have here are suitable for our area, with an emphasis on natives, food plants, and the rare and unusual.

without using toxic chemicals, and we love helping other people do it too. Gardens are such a complex world of relationships and interdependencies between soil, plants and wildflife. Our ‘job’ as gardeners is to nurture that and create beautiful spaces that allow those relationships to flourish. We get organic herbs and vegetable seedlings delivered fresh from local growers a couple of times every week. They’re srong and healthy, and the varieties are carefully selected for the season and the weather conditions. We don’t use or sell nasty chemicals. We practise Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the nursery, fostering populations of beneficial insects to help keep pest species under control. We advocate healthy soil to grow healthy plants, and organic fertilisers to keep them growing strong. If we do need to control pests or diseases in plants, we only use organic products that we know are safe for us, our customers, our good bugs and the planet.

the hive where honey flows “Experts had told me that our idea wouldn’t work for online crowdfunding, but I’m very pleased to see that they were very wrong.” To say that the Flow Hive was an overnight success is somewhat of an understatement. In fact, if there is such a thing as a 5-minute success, then this is it.

F

low Hive is the brain-child of local inventor and pilot, Cedar Anderson. A thirdgeneration beekeeper, Cedar would sit and watch bees for hours. They fascinated him, and he often wondered if there was a better way of extracting honey from hives. He had been tinkering with the idea of a different kind of hive for 10 years, but it was three years ago, when his father, Stu, began working on the project with him, that the concept took a great leap forward. “I just woke up one morning and suddenly had the realisation the combs didn’t have to be hexagonal. I had come up with a more complex design that split the comb horizontally. But Dad had a couple of coffees and came up with the idea to split it vertically,” Cedar said. Cedar had been working as a pilot and paragliding instructor. Passionate about the environment, Cedar flew missions for Greenpeace in Indonesia, flying over areas of deforestation to document illegal burning. Once his idea for the Flow Hive formed into a concept, he dedicated all his time to seeing his idea into fruition. His wife, Kylie, was pregnant with their first child, so Cedar’s thought was “I’d better get this crowdfunding thing underway.” To their utter disbelief, the target they had set of US$70,000 was surpassed in the first five minutes. Eight weeks later it reached a staggering US$12.2 Million. Their once peaceful life turned chaotic, with thousands of orders being processed to more than 100 countries. “We are lucky to have a large group of supportive and talented friends who came on board to help with deluge of orders,” Cedar said. The business receives a steady flow of orders, most humbling for Cedar is that half of the orders they receive are to new beekeepers. Upon discovering that their invention had inspired a new generation of bee lovers, they set to work on creating a series of YouTube videos to guide new beekeepers on how to operate their hive and most importantly look after the bees.

44 www.byronlifemag.com

“Flow Hive has made harvesting the honey easier, but the fundamentals of looking after your bees is still the same as regular beekeeping. The advice we give to new beekeepers is to talk to experienced keepers in your area, who can advise what to look for locally.” Cedar also said, “The world needs our native pollinators. Everyone can simply play their part by planting more flowers. A bee navigating an urban jungle needs stepping stones, the more flowers, the easier it is for them to gather their nectar and return home safely.” The greatest reward from owning a Flow Hive is of course the honey. Because it pours directly from the hive into the jar, it just tastes better. It is so natural that you can taste the difference in the honey from season to season.

Natural, pure and delicious, Flow Hive is the key to making life taste that bit sweeter.

ask your local tiler EXPERT ADVICE FROM

DEAN owner of

TILES ON BYRON WHAT DO PEOPLE NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING NEW TILES? When it comes to outdoor tiles you generally want something that has a non-slip surface as it will be exposed to rain, frost and morning dew. Also, try not to go too dark with your colours as in direct sunlight they can become quite hot and often show dirt, dust and pet hair. Natural stone is another option and often a timeless look. Just remember to seal the stone after install. You can be a bit limited when choosing a tile for wet area space like a bathroom. It’s best to look at the size of your floor area in your bathroom/ laundry and where the floor waste (drain) is located. Remember that your tiler will need to bed the floor with sand and cement before tiles are laid to make sure if water lands on the floor it will run away down the drain successfully. It is best to select a smaller tile for this reason. Any tile that is larger than 600x600mm you should look at changing your floor waste to a liner drain and relocating to run adjacent with a nominated wall in your bathroom. With other indoor areas, let your imagination run wild with sizes, shapes and colours the limits are endless!

WHAT IS HOT RIGHT NOW AND WHAT COLOURS ARE IN TREND? For indoor tiles earthy tones are popular, so is the concrete look. Timber tiles are a great way of creating a timber effect without the maintenance and upkeep of real timber. Encostic are always popular in the bathroom with so many colours and patterns to choose from. As for wall tiling the herringbone pattern is on trend at the moment along with subway tiles which appear to never go out of fashion, creating a timeless look.

WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT PERSON TO LAY YOUR TILES, WHAT SHOULD YOU ASK AND HOW DO YOU PICK THE PERFECT TILER? Referals from past clients and word of mouth are a good place to start. Also, ask for photos of previous jobs and always get the price. Lastly, remember the classic saying: “A busy tiler is a good tiler”

I do not have a crystal ball, however base the above on results of investing in quality Residential Real Estate in Brisbane over the last 40 years. Fact – the average price of a house in Brisbane in 1972 was $15,000, today it is $632,000 There will be other variables like future rates of inflation and interest rates, but the fact remains that with our Government spending money it does not have, inflation is here to stay. The main cause of inflation is our Government budgeting for a deficit, but funding it by just printing more money, which in turn dilutes the value of existing currency. Whilst the REAL value of a house in Brisbane might well remain constant, with inflation, the DOLLAR value can double in 10 years! Whilst inflation is a cruel enemy of retirees MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU! LET’STALKPROPERTY

ARE YOU

SELLING Chris Hanley

Principal (First National Byron Bay)

T

he Internet has forever changed the way agents and owners collaborate to sell homes.

Every blemish and every defect today shows up clearly in photos and images posted on the real estate portals once a property is listed for sale. You cannot afford to not have your property looking pristine the moment it hits the market because it can cost you a lot of money. First impressions are not just important they are everything today and until recently property stylists as a profession did not even exist in our region but they flourished in the cities.

YOUR HOME? All this has changed.

Over the last couple of years our region has not only caught up with the city when it comes to curating the appearance of a property as part of the marketing process it has become an integral and essential element of the maximising of the sale price of a home Just this week I was shown some new software from a European company that we are about to integrate into our company marketing. In essence this will allow not only the virtual reality walk through tours of the entire home and property

Less is best. De clutter your property. Take things out to create space. Light Light and more Light. Let it in everywhere you can. White is always a safe colour choice but not the only choice today. Our experienced sales people can recommend the most important presentation steps to protect and maximise your price. For example, sometimes it is not just about spending money on your property to make money and sometimes it is. We can advise on the difference.

but it will also now allow you to view the property and change the colour of walls and tiles and also to rearrange furniture or add furniture to see how a dwelling will look full of your style and your taste. Our company is also in production right now to have individual videos done for some of our properties. Buyers are demanding these innovations as they also now want near immediate responses from our team to any of their email text or phone messages to us. In terms of what you can do to maximise the price of your property we suggest the following ideas.

5

I t’s also not just about the internet – There are 2 types of buyers today, web buyers and kinetic buyers. People still look in the paper.

6

Don’t just use fees as the criteria in selecting your agent. Trust your instincts when selling your most valuable asset and choose someone you feel you can trust.

7

Choose an experienced agent who can help advise you about the myriad of documents and legal paper work you need to prepare before you go onto the market.

8

Go into the SOLD galleries on the real estate websites and see which agents are actually selling the property in your community. You might be surprised.

9

Finally, and most importantly, it’s also worth it for potential sellers to speak with a few people the agent has recently sold property for. www.byronlifemag.com 47

buffett, blige and more at bluesfest 2017 WITH A ROLLING STONE AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO AUSTRALIAN MUSIC, A GRAMMY AND A MEDAL OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA, (OAM), YOU STILL WON’T FIND PETER NOBLE CROWING ABOUT HIS PAST SUCCESS. INSTEAD, THE MUSIC LEGEND PREFERS TO TWEET ABOUT WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON.

“What I’ve already done doesn’t inspire me. It’s what I haven’t yet done, or what I’m going to do next that gets me excited,” he said. With a music career spanning nearly half a century, Noble spent the early years as a touring musician, after being inspired by The Beetles and The Stones. As a teenager, Noble managed to see both gigs live during their Australian tours in the 60’s, unleashing the desire to pick up a guitar and play. He was briefly a band leader for Marcia Hines before moving to America to continue touring before the business side of the industry captured his attention. After touring both nationally and internationally, Noble set up Portland Oregon’s first International Jazz Festival and was house booker at legendary venue, The Earth. Upon returning home in the 80’s, Noble’s reputation grew as a pioneer for jazz and blues touring throughout Australia. He had a niche for discovering talented new artists who were finding a new way for their music to be heard through Noble’s touring efforts. He began booking international acts with the East Coast Blues Festival 50 www.byronlifemag.com

in 1990, and became a director in 1993, coining the term Blues & Roots Music Festival to encompass the growing reach and flavour. The Byron Bay Bluesfest as it is known today has evolved into one of Australia’s most eclectic and exciting music festivals, having featured an impressive lineup of national and international acts. Featuring true legends of the industry, Bluesfest has featured Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and Santana, just to name a few, with surprise mega stars like Kendrick Lamar adding to the unique flavour of this multifarious festival. What makes this festival truly one to cherish is that it still provides a platform for emerging talent. “I would have more than 1,000 bands contact me to play at Bluesfest, and I simply can’t book them all. There isn’t a definitive formula to who I choose to book each year, I go with how I feel. “We are the most eclectic festival in Australia, a place for music lovers to converge and for talent to emerge. It’s not about getting caught up on labels and dissecting how many of the performances are blues and roots, it’s for celebrating what’s fresh and great now, enjoying the atmosphere, the vibe and appreciating a lot of talent,” Noble said.

THESOCIALFLY

True to its diversified nature, this year’s Bluesfest is set to be another unforgettable festival, with country music sensation, Zac Brown Band, as a headliner; as well as the smooth vocals of Kiwi, Neil Finn; Jimmy Buffett, the Doobie Brothers and US hip-hop soul queen, Mary J. Blige. Noble splits his time living between the Byron region and Bali, where seemingly he has mastered the work-life balance. “A number of years ago I realised I was visiting a lot of places around the world but not actually seeing it. “Things are different now, I take the time to visit somewhere new, I immerse myself in different cultures and take the opportunity to live a life which makes me happy. Live life to the fullest and enjoy every day. Life’s too short for not living.

As each day of Bluesfest passes, you wonder how the next day can possibly top the last. It will awaken a deep passion for music and movement, quenching your desire for sound while leaving you thirsty for more. A unique Australian experience, rivaling some of the best music festivals in the world yet maintaining its boutique charm.

M

eet Brad, proud owner and head chef at Warung Bagus in Byron Bay.

If you’ve been to Bali and loved the food, you can enjoy the tastes of your holiday every day when you dine at Warung Bagus. With its Indonesian inspired Australian infused menu, this local restaurant takes the best of Bali with a healthy Byron twist. The name Warung Bagus comes from a popular Indonesian phrase meaning ‘great place to eat’. Bagus means good and warung means small café. To name his restaurant, Brad has taken the spirit of this phrase, using it to embody his restaurant. “It is light hearted, kinda fun and casual”, says Brad. Brad was born in north Brisbane, but left in 1997 to explore the world. A born traveler, Brad spent many of his younger years living abroad, but always found himself returning to Byron. In 2014, he was living in the Margaret River area with his wife and after the birth of their son, they knew they had to find a place to lay foundations. “That’s when we decided to move back to Byron”, Brad says, “I also needed a project that would ground me and keep me from running away abroad! I saw a gap in the market in Byron and knew that Bali and Indonesia yields fond memories for so many Byronites.”

The name Warung Bagus comes from a popular Indonesian phrase meaning ‘great place to eat’. Bagus means good and warung means small café.

“Our breakfast menu is typically modern Australian, with a couple of Indonesian options, and a strong vegan aspect. Lunch is a selection of traditional recipes, morphed into stuff that the Byron locals and western tourists will like, again with a vegan influence. We offer a selection of different rice, meat and vegetable dishes that customers can mix and match, creating their own mixed plate.”

What would you recommend from the menu Brad? The fragrant Chicken Gulai is sensational and goes especially well with the Eggplant Zuchinni Balado. For breakfast try the corn fritters with a lychee coconut lemongrass and kaffir lime smoothie.

What are your core beliefs when it comes to cooking? Keep it fresh and light. I want to feel good after I eat, energised and ready to go, not weighed down and ready for a nap. I want my customers to feel the same. I am into nutrition and health so I always aim to make food that fits into these categories.

What is a secret cooking tip you would like to share with Byron Life readers? Soak nuts, add some spices and blend them up. See what happens!

the secret life of a barista!

coffee buzz Q: What do you love most about being a barista?

Q: What is the most challenging thing about being a barista?

A: The hustle of it all. Tight timeframes, the constant care involved with brewing coffee. Friendships, cafe culture and the fact we get to work in an industry where the majority of people involved do it for the love. its a great and innovative industry.

Q: What is your biggest secret/inside tip as a barista? A: Make every coffee like you would for a loved one. People are creatures of habit, so when you can connect with a stranger over a humble cup of coffee and show them a different world and change their beliefs and broaden their horizons, it is really rewarding.

Q: What advice would you give your customers for the best way to order their coffee? A: Order what you would usually get and then try something different on the menu, you might just find a new way to drink coffee.

cafe working

&

A: Honestly, sometimes the customers. Treat others as you would like to be treated should be the motto for all customers and all people in the world.

Q: Have you ever served coffee to a famous person? If so, who and why? A: While working in Melbourne the Band “The Dillinger escape plan” came into my work, we spoke about coffee and I showed them how to texture milk properly, I asked them what they were doing in Australia and they were touring with “Sound Wave” they asked if I was going and I explained how they were all sold out and people were scalping them online. Five minutes later they came back with a few tickets for me and my partner. It was unreal!

Q: What’s the best chat-up line to use on a barista? A: I don’t think I have ever been chatted up by someone unless they were over 55, and then we discussed what else is the same price as a cup of coffee!

Q: Have you ever given anyone a free coffee and why? A: All the time, coffee is not just an exchange in service for money. It is about community and connection between one another. The gift of giving someone a coffee especially when they need that comfort is more important than money.

The Secret of a Perfect Steak D

ining out is all about experiencing something delicious that you couldn’t or wouldn’t be able to cook as well in your own home. Top of the list is often a juicy, tender, mouth-watering steak. Cooking this sensational source of iron and protein sounds simple enough in theory, but a lot goes in to creating the perfect steak. Here is what Byron Life uncovered from the steak experts, Beef and Beach.

The JOSPER CHAR GRILL For Beef and Beach, the perfect steak begins with the perfect char grill and that’s why they invested in a world-famous Josper. The grill of choice for some of the most well-known chefs including Heston Blumenthal, Gordon

Ramsey and Jamie Oliver, the Beef and Beach Josper is the only one of its type operating commercially in Northern NSW. With no electricity or gas, only charcoal, the Josper produces a unique flavor, taking you back to years past, where you can smell a delicious timber aroma. Originating from Spain, Josper has been around for 80 years producing high quality charcoal-fired char grill ovens. The charcoal heats the heavy steel oven to a massive 500 degrees, allowing all sorts of meats to be quickly cooked keeping in all the moisture, making the food super juicy. The rendering fats drip onto the charcoal creating delicious smoky flavours that permeate up into the meat.

What is the best cut of steak on the menu? This depends on the individual. Here are the two options I would recommend; the grass fed fillet because it is sweet, light flavoured and very tender steak. The Wagyu scotch fillet with an 8-9 marble score has a strong flavour and is very tender because of the fat content.

How do you prepare the steak before you put it on the grill? Temp the steak, which means let it sit on the bench for 5 minutes and season well on both sides.

How many times and how often do you turn it when cooking? In our Josper char grill we generally like to only turn them twice.

How long do you leave it to stand before eating? We like to rest the steak for 5 to 10 minutes depending on size & thickness.

And, the perfect compliment to the perfect steak? There is no substitute for quality and enjoy a glass of wine with your meal!

dhal power

Once upon a time, it seemed dhal was only appreciated by Indians, Hare Krishnas, and Hippies, but now finally with a fast expanding population on this Planet we realise we need high protein sustainable food and dhal is it!

The concept of vegetarian diet and dhal was inspired by an Indian Yogi Pandit, Srila Prabhupad, who went to Manhattan on a boat from Kolkata to New York City in 1966. Just when the hippy movement was about to peak.

Use as a gravy on everything, add bread and rice and it can feed multitudes.

His cooking and philosophy of non-violence, but pro-active demonstrating, took the world by storm.

I would also want her to know that I have found a beautiful town by the sea I get to call home. Something she always wanted.

Oh! I almost totally stuffed my entire life up! My first choice would definitely be my beautiful wife who has been there with me through everything!

I love and miss her everyday.

The Ocean Life

&

MURRAY JOHNSON

Head surf coach and sales dude Mojo Surf

And there it is, this big body of water we call the ocean, that mirrors every feeling and emotion that we experience. The ocean is the selfless, humble giver, that keeps on giving. It’s the wise wizard with lessons to teach. It’s the imperfect, perfect creator, expressing the fundamental contrasts of existence. The ocean has this amazing ability to disconnect you from all your perceptions and thoughts, leaving you in the present moment. And I believe that’s where the love, appreciation, and desire for more to be experienced from the ocean, come from. When I was a kid surfing across my first wave, I remember feeling so enlightened whilst riding across the face, that I was trying to look over my shoulder at my dad on the shore watching to

share my stoke with him, whilst still trying to stay on the wave, in absolute disbelief of what was happening. That experience left such a powerful impression on my life. When I was younger I didn’t quite understand however, as I grow and evolve as a person, I realise that, in those humbling moments that enlighten us, there is a natural urge to want to share the experience with others. Working as a surf photographer and surf instructor, it’s amazing to be able to share moments I’ve captured with others and truly humbling to help people catch their first waves. Seeing their faces light up and their speechlessness never gets old.

Geoff Murray “...every last fun wave is your favourite, it’s immediate, present and personal.”

A

rt and surfing are both deeply rooted in the Byron area. The brush draws inspiration from the waves, and for local surf legend, Geoff Murray, they have interwoven to form the spiritual journey of his life. Growing up in Newcastle a block away from the beach, the lure of the surf made an early impression on Geoff. His High School buddies included Mark Richards and the McCabe brothers, cadet shredders of their time, and surfing became a way of life. Geoff moved to the Byron area in 1982 with his young family, two children under the age of 3. He built a mud brick house and lived on, forming a connection with the area. With the sea providing him a lifestyle he has loved for more than 50 years,

Geoff is passionate about its preservation for years to come. “Surfing, like sailing, bonds you to the sea, the wind, tides and waves. An education in natural processes, a free thinking activity and healthy on every level of our being. Now though, it’s the health of the ocean that requires ‘our’ energy and awareness to be conscious to protect its environment,” he said.

As an only-child, he said art was instinctive for him and he became a doodle master. If he was healing from a surfing injury, art was his refuge.

Geoff describes surfing as a dance, water moving, you moving and your own style.

“I started spraying surfboards at Peter McCabes Tradewind Surfboards, then took up leather craft, pottery in Tasmania and became a glass blower working in Colin Hearney’s team in Byron, then with John Lloyd at Lloyd Murray Glass. Now full circle back to painting boards, which is my favourite. Combining surfing and art is perfect for me.”

“Funny thing about surfing is that every last fun wave is your favourite, it’s immediate, present and personal.”

“I also work at McTavish Surf which allows my paintings to be finished by the absolute best in the business, masters.”

As well as delicate strokes and vivid flicks through the waves, Geoff’s art is as legendary as his surfing.

Despite some epic trips to wild parts of the globe and ripping through waves with ease, Geoff says the wildest ride has been

becoming a grandad. “It’s the ultimate crazy thing, on the beach surfing with you children’s children is sublime. Surfing has been an active limb of my life now for 50 years. Seeing your own family catch their own waves for life is the energiser.” His words of wisdom, always look for a positive from a negative.

smart leash

ost surfers recognise the feeling, the split-second where your heart skips a beat as you realise your leash has broken. Is your board hurtling toward the back of your head, or worse, like a scud missile, homing in on another surfer? Your day on the waves ends prematurely and you are out of pocket for another leash. But what if you could have replacement parts on hand, at a fraction of the cost of a whole new leash? For the past two years, Daniel Thwaite has been working on a better way.

“I came up with the idea of reusable leashes after decades of travelling in vans around the world, chasing swells of all kinds. After breaking many leashes in my time, I became increasingly frustrated with the disposable mindset of the surf industry.” Dan learned to surf when he was 15 and at 21, he moved to Byron Bay to study IT at SCU in Lismore. It was then that he began to surf more than he had ever dreamed possible. His study led to him becoming a high school teacher, but his teaching paved the way for him to save for some epic surfing road trips.

“I started Smart Leash Co out of a desire to stop throwing out broken leashes. Up until recently, no brand has been selling the parts individually. As a proud member of ‘1% for the Planet’, my products come with minimal packaging. The swing tag is a drink coaster and is connected via an extra leash string. “It is early days still but my leashes can be found at several local retailers including Patagonia Byron Bay, Byron Bay Longboards, Sea Bones, Onboard Store, Suffolk Park Spar and the Surfboard Agency. The complete range comes with free shipping within Australia when bought from www.smartleashco.com. Here you can buy a variety of urethane cords, rail savers, ankle/knee cuffs, swivels, grub screws and other soft goods,” Dan said. Follow Smart Leash on instagram @smartleashco.

Say no to waste and yes to a smarter leash.

“I worked casually for four years, saving for the next van trip abroad. I did four separate road trips around North America that included five trips to Baja and Mexico as well as three snow seasons in British Columbia,” Dan said. He taught full-time for two years before putting the wheels in motion of designing a leash featuring individual, replaceable components. His concept, Smart Leash Co, sells complete leashes as well as their separate replacement parts. Surfers with broken leashes can simply swap out the broken parts with any fin key and reuse the remaining ones. Not only will it save surfers money, it reduces environmental waste.

ife’s simple pleasures, such as swimming or surfing, can often be the hardest to achieve when you’re taking care of a wee one; but Surfing Mums is making it easier for parents to get their weekly dose of Vitamin Sea! With groups registered across Australia, Surfing Mums is making a strong comeback in Byron. Before becoming a mother, Liv Dunn used to surf regularly with a crew of girls overseas. Originally from Wales in the United Kingdom, she moved to Australia four years ago after the birth of her first daughter. Her second daughter was born in Australia. Liv discovered Surfing Mums and jumped at the opportunity to get back in the water again. As Liv explains, you don’t actually have to be a surfer, or even a mum, to join. “It’s for any carer, a dad, grandparents, aunty; anyone who would like to join a supportive environment where we take turns in looking after the children while the adults take time out in the sea. You don’t need to surf, you can SUP, swim, snorkel or even just chill on the beach,” she said. Signing up is easy, just visit surfingmums.com, the cost is minimal, around $1 per week. Outings are planned for Friday mornings at different local beaches. Join the Byron Bay Surfing Mums group on Facebook to keep up to date with details.

Nyxie Ryan

I love the freedom

E

merging as one of Australia’s top young surfers-to-watch, Nyxie Ryan loves nothing more than shredding a good wave, apart from maybe downing a good Acai bowl. Not many people can claim to be a born natural when it comes to catching a wave, but as Nyxie’s mother, Natasha, explains; she can’t remember a moment when Nyxie couldn’t surf. “I didn’t grow up next to the ocean so surfing wasn’t a sport I knew a lot about. Nyxie and her little brother, Dembe, would happily body surf, but one day when she was nine, she just said she wanted to surf. So off to the beach we went.” “No-one was allowed to help her, off she went by herself. She was straight up on the board, riding the white water to the sand. I remember sitting on the sand,

I feel when I’m in the ocean. wondering when she was going to come in, but she just rode wave after wave.” Natasha said, “Just after Nyxie picked up a board we were asked if she wanted to participate in a school holiday surf lesson with Jenny Boggis. We thought why not? Could be fun. Later that afternoon, I get a call from Jenny, asking me if I had any idea of Nyxie’s ability? I laughed, as I had no idea. Jenny has been Nyxie’s surf and life coach since.” Nyxie’s passion for the water is relentless. She and Dembe started a 30-day surf challenge, and now they are up to day 809 (and counting). If there’s no surf, she trains on land. Her dedication has led to a string of success, including two successive Rip Curl national titles. She also came third at the Australian Junior Surfing titles last year at Phillip Island.

Natasha says that Nyxie is fortunate to have the support of Byron Bay High School. “She receives massive support from all of her teachers and peers, so she is able to achieve the most out of her schooling and surfing. Without the support of Byron Bay High School, the amount of competitions and travel Nyxie does, would not be possible.” Nyxie would love to begin surfing some pro junior competitions in the next couple of years, and start competing on the qualifying series soon after. Her long-term plan is to be on the World Surf League Championship Tour.

shredding the waves

What do you love most about surfing? “Competing!” “I also love the freedom I feel when I’m in the ocean. The immediate joy I get each morning when I hit the water.” How often do you train? “I train twice weekly with my coach, Jenny, depending on what events are coming up. But I surf every day.” Where is your favourite location to catch a wave? “That’s a secret!” “But I love surfing anywhere between Ballina and Tallows.” What board do you ride? “I ride a Webster and have kept my trademark pink board with polka dots.” You can follow Nyxie’s journey on her Instagram @nyxiealiah.

YOUR KEY TO ADVENTURE #untaggable

Tania Meli

General Manager

W

hether you’re exploring the city or leaving the tarmac behind, the Audi Q2 is your ticket to adventure. General Manager of the Audi Centre Gold Coast Tania Meli said the Audi Q2 was a powerhouse of cutting-edge technology in a youthful and provocative package; a premium compact SUV that showcased the progressive design future of Audi.

“The Audi Q2 is an ever-ready accomplice, ready for adventures or for simply revelling in the excitement of the city,” she said. “This is the future of the compact SUV – where personality and luxury go hand in hand.” The sculpted exterior features a striking low roofline that descends into the C-pillars, accentuating its sporting nature with colour off-set blades. There’s also the opportunity

to customise the look of the vehicle to suit individual personalities with a variety of body styling options and trim lines available, while the interior offers a range of bespoke options to express your style; select from colours including white, yellow, orange and red to highlight details of the decorative trim or seats, or upgrade to brushed aluminium. Customisation of the leather interior is also possible. Ms Meli described the driver assistance systems as impressive.

“Always alert and never blinking, Audi pre sense front constantly scans the road ahead, ready to protect you in an emergency,” she said. “Its radar can detect vehicles and pedestrians while travelling up to speeds of 85km/h. If a

collision is imminent, the system warns the driver and, if necessary, initiates hard braking – even slowing to a complete stop from low speeds. “Adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go functions uses radars to maintain a desired distance to the vehicle ahead while Audi side assist monitors lane changes by radar. Active lane assist helps the driver stay in their lane, and the latest generation of park assist manoeuvres the Q2 into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces.” Ms Meli said the most popular option Audi safety and driver assist systems were all included in the optional assistance package, and that there was also the choice of turbocharged petrol or diesel performance engines.
