meet our new editor AMANDA WRIGHT

Today I close the door to the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath and step through to the unknown. If there’s one mantra I’ve always tried to live my life by, it’s that change may be scary, but regret of not trying is even scarier. When I was offered the position of editor for Byron Life Magazine, I didn’t need to take a minute to think about it. Instantly it was yes. Of course it would be yes. I love this publication and the people who make it phenomenal. Most of the wonderful clients who have supported our community lifestyle publication over the past 12 months will likely know me as the journalist! Many of you I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing and it’s been a privilege getting to know you and your businesses. Now as the new editor, I’ll be stepping up and getting to know many more people throughout this wonderful community better. Because we believe it’s people, rather than products, that create a following in a magazine. And this is what has driven our team from the publications inception. The desire to tell your story.

But taking on the role of editor is also bitter-sweet, because it means saying goodbye to one of the nicest blokes I’ve had the privilege of meeting. Nik Torti was the face and energy of Byron Life Magazine from the get-go. Without him, there wouldn’t be a publication. He took on an enormous role encompassing both sales and the editor’s responsibilities with the added challenge of launching a brand-new magazine. A year ago, no one knew who we were. We didn’t have a physical product to sell, only a concept. But his sheer determination and belief that we could produce something amazing for our community resulted in that first edition hitting the streets in 2017. Byron Life Magazine grew from strength-to-strength with each edition, until it garnished a reputation as ‘the’ magazine to be seen in. I’ll miss the phone calls that always started with ‘Hey legend.’

Our team wish Nik and his growing family all the best and leave gratitude and respect for all he achieved for Byron Life Magazine throughout its first year in business. The dawn of a new year brings with it more exciting changes for our magazine, we have new faces joining our family in the coming weeks as our sales and production team grows. They say it takes a village to raise a baby, it also takes a strong family to nurture a publication past its first year. For our team who have been there since edition number one, Byron Life Magazine has been our baby, and it’s a delightful feeling to watch it thrive. Our greatest gratitude is to our clients and the community. Without your support, your feedback and your willingness to share your stories, Byron Life Magazine wouldn’t be where it is today. From myself and the team, we offer our thanks, love and positivity as we head into our second year serving the community.

These are your stories, your people, your Byron Life. 8 www.byronlifemag.com

How did you get into journalism? I started in print media in 2010 and began writing in 2011 for an independent newspaper in New Zealand’s South Island called the Ashburton Guardian. I moved to Australia in 2012 and continued writing for the newspaper as a freelance writer, despite being overseas. I continued freelancing in Australia, writing for a number of magazines, private businesses and tourism organisations.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve visited in the world?

Get to know Amanda Wright

I adore travelling and do it as often as possible. I have a fascination of exploring new places, so I try to visit somewhere different each year. Last year I spent five weeks wandering throughout North and Central America and the Caribbean. Havana in Cuba was one of the most epically enjoyable places I’ve had the privilege of visiting. The friendly people, the food, the laid-back vibe and the fascinating culture, it’s a place I could quite happily stay forever. I can see why it was a favourite haunt of Hemingway’s.

Do you have any interesting tattoos? I have quite a few, the forearm of my left arm has script from the song I walked down the aisle to

on my wedding day. Most people are surprised to learn it’s from the band Slipknot, I’m a selfconfessed metal head. My other forearm sports my latest tattoo of a sugar skull which I got in Cancun, Mexico. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision on our last day while we were relaxing on the beach. I have my wedding date tattooed on my inner ring finger, while I have a fairy on one of my index fingers. I have a few more which represent friends, family and love.

What are your passions when you’re not working? I used to be quite the natural athlete when I was a teenager, I represented at a state-level in cricket, athletics and table tennis. I’ve recently taken athletics up again as a master’s athlete and won a silver medal at the World Master’s Games in Auckland last year. I’m nowhere as good as I used to be, which is frustrating, but I’m slowly building back some form. My husband is also a masters competitor in track cycling and races all over Australia when he can get the time off work. He is competing at the World Master’s Track Cycling Championships in Los Angeles later this year, so a lot of my time is dedicated to helping him train and supporting his goals. I get the obvious perk of travel when his competitions take him all over the world.

AIME’s RICHARD ATKIN “I’m glad to be able to support the next generation of Indigenous leaders. I’m glad to be part of the solution.” written by Ian Browne

When he’s not sitting on his longboard in his ‘happy place’ at Wategos; playing rugby for Byron Bay RUFC, or fishing with his son Marlon, Richard is busy as the Regional Programme Manager for the Indigenous mentoring programme – AIME- from SCU Lismore. Other than the time he made me ‘shake a leg’ traditional style, in front of a boisterous crowd at the SCU auditorium, I’d call Richard a mate. In his role with AIME over the past three years, Richard has endeared himself to many. There could be no greater role model for our youth. “I grew up in suburban Canberra, on Ngunnawal Country. Luckily, my cultural background is a little more interesting than growing up in Canberra during the nineties. My mum’s family is from Malaysia and her ancestors came from all across the Asian continent. Dad’s side of the family are European Australian. I’m a well-tanned white fella…” “Despite growing up in Australia, my Mum’s Malay heritage played a big part of how I was raised. Caring for family and contributing positively to the community were also important values I grew up with.” Richard’s wife Lucy has been unwavering in her support of his aspirations. A teacher by trade, Richard needed a break from the bureaucracy and uninspiring teaching practises, so searched for positive change elsewhere. AIME is a highly effective, world class educational development programme designed to increase career aspirations and improve educational outcomes for high school students. For 14 years in Australia, AIME has been proven to shift the mindsets of Indigenous young people from one of failure to one of success. What led you to AIME’s doorway, and what is it about ‘Richard Atkin’ that made you want to support Indigenous students?

“It was an easy door to walk through. My work at AIME aligns with my desire to operate in a space where care and consideration for others is valued above ownership and achievement for oneself. I believe in supporting people to be the best versions of themselves. I’ve always had a passion for working with young people though, they have a way of looking at the world that is different to most adults; less fixed or limiting, more adaptable and creative. Changing the narrative for Indigenous Australia from one of deficit and dysfunction, to one of positivity, is something that I’m happy to give my energy to.” 10 www.byronlifemag.com

“AIME started in 2005, working with 25 high school kids. When I started in 2015, our target was to work with 5,000 Indigenous high school students nationally, we did it comfortably. This year, we hope to work with 10,000 students in Australia. Mentoring young people as part of AIME has without doubt made me wiser. It’s helped me to be more grateful for what others, particularly my parents, have sacrificed for me to be where I am today. I’m glad to be able to support the next generation of Indigenous leaders. I’m glad to be part of the solution. “ From Lennox out to Mullumbimby, schools within Byron Shire are familiar with what AIME has to offer. An effective mentoring programme which allows students to not only bond with university students, and other members of the community, but supports our youth to realise that failure is a natural process in life, while providing the skills and self-belief to overcome hurdles:

“AIME is a mentoring bridge between universities and schools. AIME connects university students (mentors) and high school kids (mentees) with a vision of ending inequality through education. AIME sessions are designed to open the mentees’ minds to the world of possibilities and inspiration, while also highlighting opportunities within their local communities. Once these students arrive at the university campus, AIME mentors support them to unlock the magic of learning through 45-individual one hour sessions - tailored to the needs of the mentees relative to their specific year level, and delivered to them at targeted intervals as they progress through their schooling career.” “By participating in the programme, students develop a more positive sense of self, anchored by a positive sense of their Indigenous identity. Sessions undertaken by the students within the programme are based around the broader concepts of identity, mentoring, leadership, resilience, empathy and goal setting.”

Describe the public reception you encountered when AIME & Triple J joined together to bid for the change of date for Australia Day- in the hope this may install harmony within the community.

“This was an interesting one. Locally, our AIME team ran a pop-up shop and fundraising raffle In Byron Bay at the Beachfront Hotel to celebrate the fact that the Hottest 100 had a new date; a date that was more inclusive, a date on which all Australia could celebrate. Part of the lead up to the day saw us cruising the streets of Byron hitting up local businesses for raffle donations, which meant speaking to lots of people about the date change. I can happily say that the vast majority of people I spoke to were in favour of the new date for the Hottest 100, praising Triple J for their leadership. Most went on to say that it would be fine with them if policy makers decided to change the date for Australia Day.” AIME has recently begun global operations in South Africa and Uganda, while intending to adapt their model to support refugee communities here in Australia. As Richard announced, “Stay tuned, exciting times ahead!” You can support AIME by applying online as a mentor @ aimementoring.com/au/be-a-mentor or purchase some AIME Apparel shop. aimementoring.com. Products feature student designs and all proceeds go towards AIME; it’s the clothing of mentors. “We are also looking at running a music event later this year called ‘AIME Unplugged’. A night where musicians come together to fuel the mentoring movement that is shaping the world. Audiences unplug from their phones to build the most powerful natural resource in the world, ‘trust’, between each other, the performers on stage, and those that come from different walks of life. Lastly, we will be running another fundraiser during the Hottest 100 weekend in January. “ Contact Richard Atkin (AIME): p: 0407 097 842 e: ra@aimementoring.com.

COMMUNITYUNITY

meet the manager Philip Shine “Providing community access to a free-to-listen service has never been more important, for our democratic processes and for hearing music and information that hasn’t been ‘pushed’ to us. The recent revelations about Facebook and the misuse of data have shown the extent to which people are being influenced and misled. “Community broadcasting is one of the few remaining media platforms not run by corporations. That’s one of the reasons why, when I was invited to join Bay FM’s Management Committee, I jumped at it. When the opportunity to manage the station arose I jumped at that too. It’s a great station supported by a wonderful community.”

Spending the past 30 years working in the communitybroadcasting sector, you could say that community radio is in the blood of Philip Shine. Starting as a volunteer at Eastside Radio in Sydney’s Paddington in 1988 he progressed to station manager in 1994. In 2000, Philip moved from Eastside to 2SER, ten years later Philip left 2SER to manage the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s Digital Radio Project which is responsible for the maintenance and development of digital radio services for metropolitan community broadcasters. “I left the Project last year thinking, after thirty years, that I’d do something else. But community broadcasting and radio gets in your blood,” he said. When he moved to the Byron Shire seven years ago, he felt a strong sense of coming home. He had visited the Byron area many times but hadn’t lived here previously, and given his jet-set lifestyle growing up, it’s a different feeling for Philip to plant roots in one place. “My father was a pilot in the Air Force, so we travelled extensively. I spent about 15 years during the 70s and 80s living in India and Europe,” he said.

His exotic upbringing produced a mix of wonderful experiences, cultural treasures and also quite bizarre and scary moments. “I was once harassed by a taxi driver in Berlin for not giving him my autograph. I was with my girlfriend who was a musician, we had several guitars and he insisted I was Cat Stevens. He was so angry that he threw us out of the taxi; we missed the flight to Paris. “In the 70’s I drove from Europe to India a couple of times, had a knife put to my throat in Turkey and was held at gunpoint in Pakistan. On both occasions it was people wanting to ‘buy’ my then partner; sobering experiences,” Philip said. As the new manager of Bay FM, Philip oversees all facets of station operations in consultation with the management committee. “I’m still a new boy so I am doing a lot of listening to members of staff, volunteers, programmakers and the wireless.” Philip believes the charm of Byron remains intact because of the people within the Shire who have fought to keep it. Many of those people also helped to establish Bay FM, which he figures, is one of the reasons why he feels at home.

BIG SCRUB LANDCARE FEATURE

The voice of the

rainforest

Imagine a lush, vegetated area with rich biodiversity and internationally significant species with lineages going back to the age of the dinosaurs. We forever hear about the clearing of rainforest in South America and Africa which threatens to wipe out endangered species, but what many of us don’t realise is that we live in an area that once gave life to one of the most significant and unique rainforests in the world. Our farms, schools, houses, parks and shopping centres sit on land which was once covered by a magnificent myriad of towering trees and fascinating flora. This area is referred to as the ‘Big Scrub,’ and one local group of passionate people are fighting to save what’s left, before it’s too late.

Prior to European settlement “Big Scrub” rainforest covered 75,000ha stretching from Meerschaum Vale in the south to Lismore in the west, north to beyond Dunoon and east to the edge of the coastal plain. It is directly descended from the great Gondwana rainforest that covered Australia 40 million years ago, making it incredibly precious to our biodiversity heritage. But unfortunately, due to massive timber clearing by our ancestors, less than 1% remains today, as scattered remnants across our landscape. Dr. Tony Parkes is the co-founder and President of Big Scrub Landcare since it was established in 1993. He grew up in Hobart in Sandy Bay, with both water and forest on his doorstep, allowing him to wander both bush and beaches. He took up sailing at eightyears-old, a passion he continued after moving to Canada and then Sydney. It was this connection to his environment that fostered a love of ecology. Tony Parkes and his wife Rowena moved to a Byron hinterland farming property in 1989 and was soon fascinated by the patch of rainforest on the property. This led to him learning about the Big Scrub rainforest, its incredibly rich biodiversity, its ancient heritage, its horrific clearing and its continuing degradation by weeds. His passion to restore and conserve this magnificent rainforest led to the establishment of Big Scrub Landcare in 1993 with a small group of passionate landowners and community members with a common cause. “I was captivated by the amazing biodiversity and incredible beauty of our local rainforest. I still am. A small group of us decided that the community had to take the lead as government was not doing enough to stop its degradation. We restore the remnants to good condition largely by the ongoing control of weeds using professional bush regenerators and also facilitate the restoration of rainforest on land from which it has been cleared. On our farm alone, we have transformed a third of it back into rainforest with

planting more than 40,000 trees and many others are doing the same,” Dr. Parkes said. Big Scrub Landcare has benefitted from local support, with individuals and businesses providing both time and money to the cause. The financial support of Quality Timber Traders and Booyong Rainforest Creations has made this article possible to increase community awareness. Government funding for restoration work has been great in the past but is now difficult to obtain, Tony Parkes explains. If we want to save our rainforest, we need to do it ourselves. “Our only option is to seek funding from the community. This is a huge challenge. “We as a community can and must take the lead in conserving and caring for our magnificent natural environment and our country’s rich and unique biodiversity. We can enlist the support of government, but we can’t rely on government because of the everchanging political priorities and budget constraints. “We the community have to do it. Please get involved yourself.” Big Scrub Landcare received the Award for Excellence in Ecological Restoration Practice in 2016 from the Society for Ecological Restoration of Australasia (SERA) This is the leading scientific award for ecological restoration in Australia and New Zealand. The group has, over the past two decades, employed many bush regenerators to control invasive weeds in rainforest remnants, creating an industry and social economy for our local community. To help Big Scrub Landcare continue its restoration, visit bigscrubrainforest.org to find out how you can contribute to the future of our local ecology.

BIG SCRUB LANDCARE FEATURE

REGENERATE THE RAINFOREST AT HOME His ancestors were among some of the first settlers in Byron Bay to clear the Big Scrub for farming, but as fate would have it, more than 100 years later, Shayne Banks is planting it back again.

“My Family arrived on the beach at Byron Bay in 1904 by boat, a fourteen-day trip from Sydney. A large family, they carved a path towards Mt Warning and laid claim to some land at the base of the pinnacle and began to settle the quiet little village now called Tyalgum. My family then set about clearing the land to farm and now here I am, trying to replace the rainforest,” he said. Plants and conservation have been a part of Shayne’s family for generations. His father was a bush regenerator and one of the first people to start the regeneration in Broken Head National Park. As co-owner of Booyong Rainforest Creation, part of Shayne’s passion is in the regeneration of native rainforest, a cause shared by his business partner, Nick Dillon. “Nick and I first met at University in 2001. We both lived at the beach in Ballina for several years and remained good friends. Nick’s fascination with plants is even stronger than mine. After completing our studies, we both did a bush regeneration course at TAFE in 2005. We both spent years working in horticulture fields and I also coached a bit of surfing. In 2014, Nick was offered the lease on a nursery he had been working at. It was a big job, but together we decided that the future was in rainforest regeneration. We began to collect seeds and in October 2014 Booyong Rainforest Creation was born,” Shayne said. The two friends complement each other’s strengths. Nick is the nursery expert and Shayne has vast knowledge on the local flora. Together, the team is transforming land and properties throughout the shire. “After completing a lot of rainforest regeneration work, many people began to ask us about transforming their gardens. It’s an area we have expanded into as our expertise of local plants matched with the resources of a large nursery means we can develop beautiful natural home enhancements. “We can re-design existing gardens which may have become overgrown or simply don’t perform due to poor plant choice. We can create patches of rainforest in places that are difficult to mow, replacing weeds with a beautiful mini-forest which will add value to the property,” Shayne said. The wholesale rainforest nursery and ecological restoration services business is nestled just 10 min out of Newrybar in the Fernleigh, Tintenbar area. Specialising in professional tree planting, bush regeneration and native rainforest garden landscaping; consult Nick and Shayne to add a touch of radiant rainforest to your home or land. 14 www.byronlifemag.com

BIG SCRUB LANDCARE FEATURE

FROM SEED TO TREE

TO PRODUCT TO RESTORE THE ‘BIG SCRUB’ THAT WAS VASTLY WIPED OUT BY OUR ANCESTORS, MOST OF US UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF REPLANTING AND REGENERATION TO RESTORE LARGER PORTIONS OF RAINFOREST REMNANTS TO THEIR FORMER GLORY. Byron locals, Martin Novak and Dr. Joe Harvey-Jones, are passionate about trees and started planting rainforest cabinet timber woodlots on their farms in Eureka and Whian Whian over 25 years ago. At that time, plans for harvesting were secondary to planting, as a way to restore the landscape. They are two key members of Quality Timber Traders, an organisation made up of conservation

farmers and craftsmen, who are passionate about restoring some of the landscape environmental qualities that were destroyed when the Big Scrub rainforest was cleared in the last century. Its philosophy “from seed to tree to product” underpins a strong leaning towards ecological values and the team’s commitment to restoring the Byron landscape. The vision is to see seeds planted on Byron farms that grow into beautiful trees that are then transformed by local woodworkers into furniture and interior decoration. This creates a loop from tree farmers to local woodworkers who can work together to improve our region’s ecological diversity while producing beautiful works of art from specialty timber.

Martin’s enduring dedication to the work of farm foresters in the region is a shining example of what we can achieve if we all work together. “I feel strongly that we have this cohort of dedicated planters from the 1990s and it’s a great outcome that we can now begin to offer them some small financial reward for their efforts in conservation to returning our precious landscape to something other than lowdiversity grassy cow paddocks. Now we need the next Byron generation to step up and take over from us ageing farmer enthusiasts,” he said. Joe was a treasurer of the Big Scrub Rainforest Landcare Group Inc with Tony Parkes for 10 years and is a strong supporter of their continuing work. “The reality is that very few farms in the Byron

Shire have rainforest remnants on their property, but we can concentrate our energy into creating corridors between these magnificent remnants with models that are more economically effective than purely environmental plantings with high diversity and close spacing,” Joe said. Now that a range of timber has reached its growing peak, Quality Timber Traders will soon be offering silver quandong, silky oak and Queensland maple that are rare and highly sought after for high end products. The versatility of this timber is such that it can be made into pieces as diverse as musical instruments, architectural features, shop and office fittings, boat building, fine furniture, surfboards and interior decoration. To find out more about future sustainable harvesting, visit qualitytimbertraders.com and become a part of something special for our future generations. Quality Timber Traders is a cooperative of farm foresters in collaboration with Southern Cross University with support from The Farm Co-operatives and Collaboration Pilot Program (Farming Together Program).

discover your

habitat An unwavering decision to create a destination where people could live, work and play in one space, has given life to one of Australia’s most socially and environmentally progressive villages. Habitat is a mixed-use development of retail and commercial space to reduce the reliance on vehicles to commute to work. People can achieve the work-life balance they crave in a technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable setting. But who is the person behind the vision? Byron Bay local, Brandon Saul, purchased the land for Habitat 19 years ago. During those 19 years, his view for the future remained constant; to build a variety of different commercial and housing options to suit owner-occupied, passion-based businesses. The development is defined by a simplicity to the architecture, with larger buildings broken down in scale to allow covered outdoor spaces to exist between them, a direct response to Byron lifestyle, plenty of shade, sub-

beach at lunch.”

We asked Brandon what makes Habitat unlike any other place in Australia to live, work and play.

How is Habitat tech-savvy and environmentally conscious? “Homes and offices at Habitat enjoy full ‘fibre to the wall’ access to Australia’s national broadband network – with standard internet download speeds of 100mbps. The development also incorporates one of Australia’s first embedded energy networks, allowing owners to generate and sell solar energy. Unused power will be stored in the communally owned and managed Tesla battery bank. Habitat also incorporates greywater re-use in both the toilet facilities and garden irrigation throughout the site. All of the buildings feature natural ventilation, natural light and high thermal mass - all of which combines to reduce any reliance on mechanical cooling or heating and lighting.”

“It is all about bringing like-minded people and businesses together – progressive minded business people who value a sense of community that is part and parcel of the Byron lifestyle. It’s also for those amongst us that want to lead a more sustainable, balanced lifestyle - without having to compromise on creature comforts or style,” he said. In terms of lifestyle, what does Habitat provide? “All staff and residents have access to the 25m lap pool and the adjacent ‘conversion’ pool. There are shower and change facilities for those who choose to cycle to work. Electric charging stations are provided for those with electric and hybrid vehicles. On-site lifestyle ventures include a gym, pilates studio, shared meeting spaces and a café serving healthy, nutritious food and great coffee. There’s something special about having great coffee at your doorstep and being able to walk to the

People are striving to achieve a good work/life balance. Habitat is simply a reflection of this trend. Who wouldn’t want to surf at lunch time and get back to business in the afternoon? It’s the habitat of the future.

HABITAT WOMAN & HABITAT HOME A destination for emerging and developed local retailers, Habitat Home and Habitat Woman bring more than 60 innovative brands together in two dynamic spaces. The collaboration in its essence is a family with each brand complementing the next for an exciting showcase of local talent. Manager of Habitat Home and Habitat Woman, Tracey Woods, explains how this shared-space venture was important to the overall vision of Habitat. “With a mix of both relaxed and stylish products, the chosen brands were initially all local and reflect the

Byron lifestyle. Our venture allowed retailers without a physical presence in town the opportunity to test the market, giving customers the opportunity to touch and view products that were previously only available online. “With free car parking, train access, great food and fitness options and a host of other commercial ventures, Habitat draws a diverse crowd, from residents who live here to tourists and locals from all across the Shire. Our shared collaborations of Habitat Home and Habitat Woman give shoppers the opportunity to shop 60 small boutiques in two diverse spaces,” Tracey said. Are there any brands you stock exclusively? East Coast General and Las Ninas Textiles we display exclusively in Byron Bay. East Coast General has great ‘The Future is Female’ tees that attract a lot of interest. What is a quirky item you have on display? “Currently a Frida Kahlo mermaid wall hanging from Las Ninas Textiles. She always attracts attention.” TRADING HOURS www.habitatbyronbay.com / @habitat_byronbay

BARRIO

A collaboration of food and friendship, Barrio at Habitat is the definition of your friendly neighbourhood eatery. With South American influences created by Chef Francisco Smoje, this fiesta of flavour is one not to be missed. Co-owner, Tristan Grier, explains how the local foodies joined forces to bring one of the Byron Shire’s favourite eateries to life. “Many of us worked together previously, Francisco and Emma come with a huge following in the local food community while Dan

DEPARTMENT OF SIMPLE THINGS Homegrown Aussie menswear label, Mr Simple, encompasses everything fashion should be. Uncomplicated, classic and stylish. In keeping with the no-fuss vibe, the Department of Simple Things is a new concept for the brand and was born here in Byron Bay. The larger format store is stocked with things that owner and creator, David Fraser, likes himself. “If I wouldn’t buy it, it doesn’t go in the shop. Simple,” he said. The Department of Simple things is located in Byron’s Habitat village. David explains why this development was a good fit for the Mr Simple brand. “Habitat is a development focused on small creative businesses and that customer base and ethos

is the beverage master, his drinks are on another level. Francisco is from Buenos Aires and this is his food platform. He grew up cooking over the coals and now he has his own charcoal section where he can really express himself,” he said.

The menu has meat influences but is also plant and vegetabledriven, so the wood-roasted pumpkin and brown rice is another favourite.”

Tristan and Kassia Grier are well-known from popular establishments Sparrow Coffee and Harvest while Dan Wyllie brings epic experience from New York City.

“Who said you can’t make friends with salad? Try the blacked eggplant or the iceberg lettuce, sardine yogurt and ranch. Both side dishes are just outstanding.”

As Barrio’s vibe is that of your neighbourhood eatery, Habitat was the ideal choice for location. “The space is beautiful, open and inviting; the place where both workers and residents at Habitat know they can visit for their coffee hit and daily banter. Habitat is a growing, beautiful community. We believe in the developer’s vision and are excited to watch this village evolve.” What is a highlight from the menu? “The grilled beef rib chimichurri. I watch the meat sit over the coals all day and the smell is to die for.

What is the quirkiest food item on the menu?

Currently, Barrio is BYO but watch this space. A liquor license is on its way which will allow Fran and Dan to express themselves through matching food to drinks. This will be Barrio’s coming of age, strengthening the growing relationship it has with the Habitat community. Then you’ll most likely see our in-store barbershop. This is an experience that brings people together to socialise, chat and hang out. That’s the vibe we are searching for, a fun place to shop where there’s a great atmosphere.” What items can you find within the Department? “Our range of fashion including the popular organic Mr Simple cotton tees. Travel accessories including Herschel Trade wheeled luggage. Traeger wood pellet BBQ’s which make an awesome brisket. Top this off with some

A STRONG TEAM

20 www.byronlifemag.com

= STRONG RESULTS They know their local patch better than anyone and look forward to sharing their knowledge with you. Perhaps this is why First National Byron Bay have been awarded as the number one office in the Australasia First National network. With more properties for sale and more homes and businesses rented than any other local real estate company, it takes an expert team and passionate culture to stay at the top of their game. SO WHAT MAKES THIS TEAM HARD TO BEAT? From its directors through to sales agents and customer care; First National Byron Bay value its people above all else. The team is made up of exceptionally talented award-winning agents, property managers, marketing and administration staff who live, work and play in the area. They are passionate about their home and about each other. Principal and Director, Chris Hanley OAM, shares how First National Byron Bay places emphasis on forming a strong team. “We only select good people for our sales and property management teams and we make sure their values match our company values. We take our time hiring, we do multiple interviews and we do adult work experience,” Chris said. There is no I in team, which is why First National have developed a teamwork system for its senior sales staff. “All the senior sales people with First National work in teams today. This means that they are now able to offer buyers and sellers a much higher level of service. We also understand that culture is everything in a business and culture is caught not taught. Culture is the only thing that can’t be copied by your competitors. It takes many years to build a strong culture and your culture always needs to be protected,” Chris said.

WHY IS FIRST NATIONAL BYRON BAY SO SUCCESSFUL? LET’S HEAR FROM THE TEAM. Sophie Moir “We are a strong team because we have a strong company culture. A lot of the people who work here have been at the company for more than 20 years. The stronger your culture is, the less likely your employees are to leave. The more your employees stick around, the stronger your culture will become.” Paul Prior “Our success is due to hard work, commitment & persistence. TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More.” Tara Torkkola “Having colleagues who are great at what they do gives you the energy to aspire to doing great work. Having back-up, support and mentors is important.” Claudette Martin “We are so successful because we have developed strong relationships in the community and deliver the best results. All our team members have a great work ethic, this definitely shows in the results at the end of the day.” Kate Stanford “We’re part of a company that values the community, values their staff and family, and values their clients. We’re led by example to be the best that we can be in all of these areas. We’re treated well and happy to be here which means we treat our clients well and the positivity flows on.” Oliver Aldridge “The success we achieve is through the real relationships and trust we have built with the community over the years. I feel the community know that we are not just after a quick deal, we are looking for clients for life and this is how we look at each transaction. Being a part of such a strong team definitely helps achieve great results for our clients. We work with some of the best people. I believe having a dedicated team for marketing, accounting, financial controller and the awesome client care team sets us apart from our competitors.”

Jade Thomas “I believe we are so successful because we hire great people who are focused on being part of a team and have a shared interest in bettering ourselves. In real estate, agents can often have short term goals, moving from one sale to the next, however for an agency to be really successful, we need to share our knowledge, get involved with shaping our town and give back to those who have supported us.”

Q&A WITH THE TEAM What’s the best or worst piece of advice in real estate you’ve received? “The more you pick up the phone, the luckier you will get.” – Paul. “Buy the worst house on the best street.” – Sophie. “Let’s wait for the prices of real estate to come down.” – Oliver. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH? “Never give up.” – Tara. “I am great at implementing. When I see many others in my industry talking about doing something, I’m already taking steps to make it happen.” – Jade. Who within the real estate industry has inspired you? “I have worked with Chris Hanley since the early 1990’s and have always been impressed with the strength and wisdom that Chris portrays on a daily basis in leading FN Byron Bay for all these years.” – Claudette. WHAT IS YOUR WORK MANTRA? “Whatever you’re doing, do your best. It’s more efficient to put in the extra effort the first time around rather than do the job twice.” – Kate.

“Laneways are often treasure troves where you can find the unexpected, a reward for venturing off the beaten path.”

His passion for hair began on the floor of his father’s salon in Baden-Baden, Germany, who had trained under the English Godfather’s of hairdressing, Vidal Sassoon and Joshua Galvin. Frankie travelled extensively and worked as a hair stylist and educator in salons and academies around the world; Germany, London, Brazil and Sydney. The couple have a baby son, Fridolin. “I feel this area is the perfect environment to bring up little Bambinos.”

Originally from Melbourne, Jen White can’t help but be drawn to exploring laneways. She spent many years living in different parts of the world, when her husband’s work brought their family to Mullumbimby a few years ago. “We realised pretty quickly that Mullumbimby was the perfect place for us to put down our roots and raise our three little kids. We love the eclectic vibe, the sense of community and the awareness and connection of the people; to us this is the essence of Mullum and what makes it so special,” she said. Jen is the owner of Haven Botanical. Combining florist experience in Melbourne and horticulture and landscaping in London, Jen is able to blend both passions into her business.

What can you expect at Haven Botanical?

“Haven is so much more than a florist and nursery. The store is filled to the brim with beautiful blooms, lush indoor plants and pots, water features, botanical wares and an extensive collection of gifts, homewares and books.”

What is Haven’s style?

“An eclectic mix; rustic, earthy and relaxed. Vintage pieces and eastern wares blend with nature’s beauty to create an unpretentious space. Our floral style is inspired by beautiful, bountiful gardens; natural and rambling in form.”

What’s in season now?

“As we enter the cooler months we will offer a wide variety of blooms including seasonal favourites tulips, hyacinths, hydrangea and freesias and of course our sublime, perfumed garden roses.”

ot all who wander are lost, especially those who meander down Mullumbimby’s famous laneway. A local favourite and a hidden gem for visitors to unearth, this unassuming path leads to some of the best food, coffee, experiences, treasures and trinkets in the Northern Rivers. “It’s a special pocket of Mullumbimby, a vibrant place

that has a chilled-out vibe, away from the businesses on the main street.” It’s a melting-pot of all that’s wonderfully diverse about Mullumbimby. It’s alive with colourful characters who frequent the café, listen to tunes while getting their hair styled, choose flowers for a loved-one or adorn their home with an exotic find.

Let’s meet the businesses that call this laneway home.

The Rock & Roll Coffee Company

Tinker Tailor Dancer Trader

“We love our Laneway. It is like its own sovereign nation, once you walk down it you are a world away from everywhere else.”

“The Laneway crew is really a big family. I feel incredibly lucky to work in such a warm and inclusive environment.”

Established by Trent Morris and Michael Collins, The Rock & Roll Coffee Company is a Mullum institution, legendary for great coffee, incredible fusion cuisine and a laidback urban vibe.

Growing up in rural NSW, life has taken Niyati Hutchins all around the world and back again to the bush. After years spent between the Inner West of Sydney and traveling in India and Europe she landed here in Mullumbimby with her partner 15 years ago.

The lads both moved to Mullumbimby to raise families and live the dream. Trent, a fourth-generation restaurant owner has around 20 years’ experience as a barista. His passion for coffee has earned him a reputation as one of Australia’s master baristas and gained him a loyal customer base. Michael’s earliest memories involve playing in the kitchen of his father’s restaurant in New Zealand. He went on to train and work internationally, including at Sydney’s Blackbird Café and The Saint in Brighton, UK, where he developed his passion for modern fusion cuisine. “Mullumbimby is the perfect spot for a place like Rock & Roll. Like Mullum, Rock & Roll pushes the boundaries, explores the new, and is totally comfortable in its own self.”

What can we find on the menu?

“Customer favorites include our signature dish, the Japanese-inspired breakfast, Egg Kurasawa as well as Rock & Roll’s famous Brekky Rolls and organic pastries, which are made fresh daily. Lunchtime hits are Malaysian-style warm Gado-Gado salad and wok fried noodles dishes.”

Are you open for dinner?

“Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm we step up the cuisine game with favorites like our Crispy Half Duck in red plum sauce, Barramundi salad or our spicy Thai green curry.”

Tell us about your regulars?

“We never looked back and are blessed to have two beautiful children that continue to entertain and inspire us every day.” She started Tinker Tailor Dancer Trader five years ago as a small project in the tiny space next to Rock and Roll. It has grown over the years and now spans the street front of the beautiful historic bakery building. “It was an opportunity for me to open a store marketing my own designs as well as collecting and curating some amazing creatives. Five years later the store has evolved into an eclectic mini-department store offering a larger selection of all the things I love.”

What can we find at Tinker Tailor?

Treasures which are unusual, beautiful, timeless and authentic. Ceramics from bespoke local artists sit next to unique pieces from Japan. Our fashion end features boutique Australian designers and jewelers, sitting alongside beautifully made European shoes and underwear. My favourite items in the shop are our own custom-made Kantha cushions. I make these from the hand-stitched vintage blankets I collect from Bangladesh. Each one is unique and has its own story.”

Tell us about the interesting people you meet who visit the Laneway?

“We have such an amazingly diverse community in Mullum. I love the colourful tapestry that makes up our “Biggest Little Town.” From the sweetest elders that pop in to share great historical tales to the radical folk that continue to encourage a strong voice in challenging times.”

“Rock & Roll is full of interesting folks. Just like life. They come together in our created space to enjoy the atmosphere, the music and the delights on offer. Coffee is where it started and is the backbone of the operation. People come in to get their fix, again and again.”

BRUNSWICK VALLEY

Welcome to the second Byron Life Magazine destination feature We meet the local business community creating the identity of Billinudgel, Ocean Shores and Brunswick Heads. From taverns to country clubs, hair salons to electricians, art galleries to wellness centre, we meet the local businesses that make this community tick.

BILLINUDGEL One of the most unique microcosms of the Byron Shire is the small, quirky town of Billinudgel. A popular place for locals to venture for a ‘Sunday Sesh’ at the true-blue Billinudgel Hotel or to sample a delicious locally-made pie at the iconic Humble Pie café. Located just off the highway, Billinudgel has a laidback, stress-free vibe and an emerging community of local businesses operating in its close-knit industrial estate. From hair salons like Billi Goat Hair to trades like True Line Patios and Coughran Electrical, these industries are the reinforcing structure behind Billinudgel’s strong local community.

OCEAN SHORES Established in 1969, Ocean Shores was originally owned by an American Developer and backed by American singer Pat Boone, receiving its name from his residence, Ocean Shores in Washington. It is now a vibrant, fast growing community and popular place to live.

A comfortable suburbia, tucked safely in the arms of the more alternative Byron Shire, the area has easy access to several local beaches, plenty of large modern homes, its own shopping centre and a safe, family-friendly community feel. Locals are now fortunate to have two recently renovated, first-class establishments where they can meet friends, relax, dine and enjoy entertainment and recreation. The Ocean Shores Tavern is located at the Ocean Village Shopping Centre. It’s modern, comfortable surrounds, delicious counter meals and friendly bar service make ‘The Tav’ a special place to unwind. At the top of the hill with stunning views across the coastline is the award-winning Ocean Shores Country Club. A large outdoor deck looking out to sea and daily food specials make the golf club perfect for a round of golf but also for an affordable family feed.

BRUNSWICK HEADS Sandwiched between the golden sands of a wavelicked beach and a broad tidal river with a sandy bed, this location is almost too idyllic. Add into the

mix, over a dozen cafes ranging from boutique to bohemian then you can see why people come from all over the country to visit this small coastal town. Known affectionately as ‘Bruns’ by the locals, the town contains older, quainter houses built in the traditional style and is largely populated by lucky retirees or holiday rentals. At its heart, is the Bruns Hotel which is famous for live music and a vibrant atmosphere in its large beer garden. The town is also a popular boutique shopping destination and renowned for its selection of wellness services. Byron Life Magazine met with Roz, owner of Mina Mina Art Gallery which specialises in contemporary Aboriginal Art. Also, Erik and Rebecca from Pura Vida Wellness Centre, a community of more than 20 therapists delivering a huge variety of natural remedies from kahuna massage to kinesiology, naturopathy to astrology and much more. We hope you enjoy this business community snapshot. We certainly enjoyed connecting with the vibrant, diverse mix of local businesses and would like to thank everybody who participated. www.byronlifemag.com 25

DID YOU KNOW? Mina Mina is a sacred site in the Western Desert Northern Territory. Roz accompanied Warlpiri artist and traditional owner of Mina Mina, Dorothy Napangardi, when she returned to her birthplace for the first time. Dorothy gave Roz her skin name as her adoptive sister and so she named the gallery in her honour.

MINA MINA ART GALLERY She became so interested in the art that she moved to the Northern Territory to work in the gallery and learn more. She became a lecturer at Charles Darwin University and also led tours through the art gallery at the Alice Springs Cultural Precinct. She moved to Brunswick Heads in 2003 and opened Mina Mina Art Gallery in 2004.

As a graphic designer working in Melbourne, owner of Mina Mina Art Gallery, Roz Goodchild, was approached to design a logo for a prominent indigenous art gallery in Alice Springs.

The art Roz sells at Mina Mina is sourced from authentic art centres. Roz explains, that because these centres are owned by the artists, the profits help their local community. “The money generated from art on

remote communities supports programs such as education and medical clinics,” she said. Indigenous artists use iconography and art as a way of telling their stories, an important way to educate the younger generations who don't have the same connection to land as their ancestors. What do you enjoy about owning a business in Bruns? “I love Bruns as it reminds me of the family holidays we took to beachside towns when I was a child. It has a lovely community feel and it is still a very relaxed and family-oriented town. I have diversified the business over the years to include non-indigenous gifts, so I get a broad range of customers who are always in a good mood! I live nearby, and my shop looks out over the river, what could be better?”

Pura Vida means ‘Pure Life’ in Spanish but in Costa Rica it conveys a much deeper meaning; of living a simple, humble, natural life in harmony with nature. My philosophy of healing is the same; live simply and close to mother nature and mother nature will look after you.

PURA VIDA Moving to Byron 27 years ago, Erik Adams feasted on the smorgasbord of alternative therapies and practices available in the region. His father was a volunteer doctor at the Nimbin Aquarius Festival in 1973 and taught Erik the importance of prevention rather than cure. Inspired by the healing power of nature and the belief in the body’s innate power to heal itself, Erik established Funkey Forest Retreat Centre in Main Arm in the late 90’s and ran silent fasting retreats there for 10 years while studying and practicing plant-based nutrition, bodywork, meditation, yoga and devotional music with great teachers from all over the world. In 2016, Erik founded Pura Vida Wellness Centre, a multimodality holistic health clinic in downtown Bruns. It is a colourful and welcoming oasis preserving the old school Byron vibe. What can you expect at Pura Vida? A veritable variety of therapies delivered by a dedicated community of more than 20 therapists. Therapies cater to the full spectrum of physical and emotional

What do you love about running a business in Bruns?

“I am very excited that my beautiful partner Rebecca Zomer will now be working here offering colon hydrotherapy and naturopathic support for your detox and gut health needs,” Erik said.

“I love Bruns because the river and nature are an ever-present calming force. I also love the community, the lack of chain stores, and that the town is still laid back enough that I can wear no shoes to work.”

With one of the most favourable climates for outdoor living in the world, it’s little wonder many of us look to the outdoors for our entertaining and lifestyle here in the Shire.

TRUELINE PATIOS AND EXTENSIONS

Trueline Patios and Extensions is a familyowned and operated business with deep connections to the Northern Rivers. Local owner, Scott Grimster, developed the local Trueline branch in 2008. His late uncle founded the Trueline business in Brisbane in 1970, with Scott’s cousin taking over the Queensland operations after their uncle passed away.

“We were renovating an investment property in Goonellabah in early 2008 when the opportunity presented itself to become involved with Trueline. We originally set up office in the Byron Industrial Estate, then moved to Bangalow after two years to get away from the traffic. We out grew our premises there and were fortunate to find our warehouse in Billinudgel which we moved into in 2015,” Scott said.

Construction has been in Scott’s blood since a young age. His parents bought and renovated a number of homes and Scott was involved with all aspects from an early age. His wife, Donna, also comes from a construction background and together the couple have renovated a number of residential and commercial properties.

“We are definitely not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ construction company and really enjoy the process of developing a client’s vision into an outdoor area that is going to enhance the livability and enjoyment of their home.”

Trueline Patios and Extensions look after all elements of the project, from design to completion.

Construction is carried out to industry-leading standards of quality, backed by Trueline’s customer service guarantee.

“With a lot of our work on, or near the coast, it is imperative we use materials that are going to last. All our roofing and fixings offer the highest guarantees of any comparable products on the market,” Scott said. What do you enjoy about owning a business in Billinudgel? “Moving our office to Billinudgel in 2015 was the best decision we have ever made. It is so easy to access and is very central for us. We build from the border down to Yamba and West to Kyogle so the Nudge is central to all areas. Traffic is never an issue with wide streets and plenty of parking. There are a diverse range of businesses in Billinudgel and we are fortunate to be able to use the products and services offered by many of them. BILLINUDGEL

DID YOU KNOW? The concept for the name ‘Billi Goat Hair’ came from Donna’s 16-year-old son, Jett. “I wanted to play with the name and weave Billinudgel in somehow, but when I showed my shortlist of names to my son he was unimpressed. He said, ‘that won’t cut it, you need something like Billi Goat hair.’ I loved it, and so did my friends, so I accepted his suggestion graciously!”

BILLI GOAT HAIR

Growing up in the Northern Rivers, Owner and Senior Hairdresser of Billi Goat Hair, Donna Aboody, always had a soft spot for the low-key and laidback lifestyle of Billinudgel. After starting her apprenticeship in Alstonville at 15 years of age, she opened her first salon at Whale Beach at 19, Sydney. “Those were some of the best years with an exciting range of clientele, everything from politicians and celebrities to underground characters. There was never a dull moment,” she said. She completed a business degree back in the Northern Rivers and then headed afar to the Northern Territory with her now husband, Scott. When the opportunity arose to occupy our newlybuilt space in Billinudgel, she jumped at the chance to create a warm, intimate professional space, with a different vision for the hair game. “The concept is based around the idea for a team of freelance hair stylists and barbers to utilise and share the space in Billi Goat Hair, creating bonds and building clientele while being able to live in this beautiful region. Shared costs make it

more affordable for a stylist to be able to work for themselves without the traditional large overheads,” Donna said. Billi Goat Hair caters for all heads of hair, from children to adults, men’s barber styles to stylish creations for ladies. The stylists pride themselves on affordability and offer a local’s loyalty card to make it more rewarding. There’s free-of-charge car parking and clients are welcomed with a complimentary beverage, a cheeky scotch to a glass of bubbles. What do you love about being in business in Billinudgel? “The local community is tight and caring, it still has that grass-roots rustic village feel just like the villages I grew up in. I love the no-fuss, laid back and lack of pretension vibe it still has.”

OCEAN SHORES

OCEAN SHORES TAVERN Originally built in 1992, you can’t say that the Ocean Shores Tavern is steeped in colourful history, but what it lacks in historical significance it more than makes up for in character. This local institution was transformed from a dark tavern in the corner of a carpark into the vibrant fusion of festivity and fun that its patrons love today. This recreation was the vision of three publicans, current owners Adsy, Chikin and Dodger. For the past seven years their renovations and dreams have given the tavern a vivacious vibe where everyone in the community feels comfortable to gather for a laugh and good times. There’s always something happening at the Tav. Members enjoy happy hours from 5-6pm weekdays and from 12-1pm on Saturdays. Grab your buzzer and settle in for Tuesday night Quiz Express Trivia, the closest most of us will come to actually appearing on a game show. Thursday raffles are a tradition and themed karaoke on the first Friday of every month blend both serious and silly contenders for the funniest few hours of the week. The Tav has you covered with live footy and UFC with a Saturday Tav Tipper competition for punters to take home some serious cash. Chill on the popular deck which can be utilised for events and functions or catch a comedy night or live sport while enjoying the ambience. Above all else, Ocean Shores Tavern is a family unit. The relationships between staff and patrons is what makes it one of the most popular watering holes in the Shire. Share a joke, bestow some valuable advice, have a laugh or even help a mate move house, your mates from the Tav have got your back.

MEET OUR BARMAID – BONNIE Bonnie, originally from the glitz and glamour of the GC, moved to the Northern Rivers for a change of scenery. She fell in love with the people and has been in the Shire for 10 years. One of the friendly faces pouring drinks and spinning a yarn, she’s been with Ocean Shores Tavern for six years.

What drink are you most famous for mixing?

As well as filling in her day annoying Leigh (Fish) Dowling, she is likely the friendly voice on the end of the phone calling members to let them know what great offers and events are on at the Tav.

“Our wine list is pretty extensive, we’re constantly making small changes to give our members variety, so they can try new and exciting drops.”

“My espresso martinis are pretty amazing.” What drinks are surprising at the Tav?

What do you get up to when you’re not working? “I love skateboarding, drawing and hanging with friends at the beach.”

The couple met in Toowoomba, where Jill grew up, but decided to move to the Shire for the benefit of their son who has cystic fibrosis. The beach-change helps to manage his condition and Jill and Gareth say it was the best decision they ever made.

#TheNakedTruth with Amanda Allen

from Addiction and Depression to Power and Motivation Within Crossfit, the group of like-minded people from all walks of life who choose to support one-another aren’t known as clients, but are a collective called a community. Because everyone from your eighty-year-old grandfather to a single mother, an accountant and a professional rugby placer all workout at the same time, at their own pace, receiving support from one-another to crush individual goals. It’s this sense of community which changed Amanda Allen’s life. From struggling with depression and alcoholism, she embraced the Crossfit culture which then became pivotal in her health and empowerment. It released the warrior woman from within and allowed her to take her power back from addiction. 13-and-ahalf years ago, she stepped into the rooms of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) to get better. Five years later, her mental health journey continued when she discovered CrossFit. “Crossfit transformed my life, empowered me, give me a tribe to belong to and made me a physically, mentally and emotionally stronger woman,” Amanda said. Not only has it strengthened her in every way imaginable, Amanda’s determination led to her becoming a world champion. Not once, but twice. “I discovered Crossfit by accident, I was trying to make the Olympic Team for High Kneeling Canoeing and that lead me to exploring options for building my strength and high-intensity fitness, that’s when I stumbled upon Crossfit. I fell quickly and deeply in love. Eight years later, after five trips to compete the World Crossfit Games, that love and fire for Crossfit burns as bright and strong as ever!” Despite overwhelming success in her life, Amanda has struggled severely with depression. At first, she was afraid to seek help, petrified that people would think of her as weak. Even at high points of physical prowess, the darkness would creep in, paralyzing Amanda in a state of depression and anxiety that would halt both her training and happiness.

“It’s just horrifying. When it hits hard, it’s allconsuming and there’s no part of life that brings happiness anymore. Every little thing is a struggle.”

function again?”

While she has seen the darkest of days, she knows there is also light at the end of the tunnel. In 2016, she ran 1,000km through rural Queensland, from Toowoomba to Mackay, to raise money for mental health and suicide prevention. It was her way of giving back after breaking through the other side herself, to show others who may be struggling that it’s not weak to speak.

“Two weeks post-surgery I began gentle movement to ease my body back into functionality. I started slowly on the assault bike. 10 minutes of slow movement increased to 15 minutes and it progressed from there. I didn’t push myself.

Not only has Amanda had a constant battle with the black dog, physical complications threatened to derail her Crossfit progress late last year, when she was rushed into hospital for intensive urgent surgery. “Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with fibroids. I had them removed but unbeknownst to me, fragments were left behind. Prior to Christmas last year, I ended up in excruciating pain for two weeks. I spent three nights in hospital but was then sent home, only to arrive back in emergency just before Christmas. Specialists were concerned that I had cancer after finding growths in my abdomen, so I was rushed in for immediate surgery. “After the operation, the surgical team discovered that fragments of fibroids were left behind 10 years ago and had developed into 4kgs of tumours in my abdomen. I was diagnosed with a very rare form of fibroids which act cancerous but are benign. The cut to have them extracted ran from my pelvis to diaphragm and I also had a hysterectomy at the same time. “With severe damage to my abdominal wall, I wondered how I would ever recover. Would it take months or years to be able to compete at full

Amanda approached her recovery one day at a time.

“Four weeks post-surgery, I was overhead squatting 60kg. I credit the level of health and fitness I had prior to surgery as the main factor in allowing me to recover my function and strength as fast as I did. “Eight weeks post-surgery, it had seemed my wound had completely healed and I felt strong enough to compete. I was ranked number one in Australia and sixth in the world in less than three months after my operation. It just goes to show the healing capacity of the human body and mind given the right conditions,” Amanda said. As owner of CrossFit Byron Bay, Amanda’s passion is as strong for others as for her own achievements. While she hopes to stand on the podium once again at this year’s Crossfit World Games, she is just as driven to help her tribe achieve their goals, both physical and mental. “It’s extraordinarily empowering. For me, and many others I coach, it unleashes the warrior from within. We embrace the warrior and call it forward. We are all stronger than we think, once we realise this, our level of physical, emotional and mental health increases. Crossfit to me is about changing, growing and developing personal power and strength. It helped me to overcome my depression and each workout brings a sense of meditation. If I can help just one person overcome what I went through, then it’s all worth it.”

“Healthy is not a size, it’s a lifestyle” Everyone has their own perception of what ‘healthy’ looks like, usually based on our social conditioning and media influences. But regardless of our own projections, the truth remains that ‘healthy’ is the harmonious balance of making the body, mind and soul ALL happy. That means letting go of the idea that you’re not healthy unless you fit a size small or that you have to slug it out at the gym for two hours a day in order to be fit. If you exercise as often as you can, eat a balanced diet of whole foods, know how to enjoy a treat without spiraling out of control and regularly take time for yourself and the people you love, you may just realise you’re actually doing a much better job at being healthy than you initially thought, all by simply preventing disease, connecting with yourself and others and keeping a clear mind for other areas in your life. Being a fitness and nutrition coach makes me a strong advocate for eating a healthy diet and living an active lifestyle but when having the perfect body becomes more important than creating memories with your loved ones and living a life you enjoy, I think it stops being “healthy” and can become a damaging obsession. Too often I see people reach their goal and still be unhappy because in the process they neglected all the other parts of their lives that also make them happy. Health and well-being is about so much more than getting a flat stomach and toned thighs, it’s about nurturing all the parts of yourself that contribute to your happiness so that you can go through life being the healthiest, most vibrant and energetic version of you. Setting goals and working hard to achieve them is an incredible and empowering thing to do, but my message to you is do not focus so much attention on the way you look that you ignore the way you feel, don’t place so much importance on what you eat, that you forget it’s okay to treat yourself every now and then, and lastly when you’re tired and feel ready to give up, learn how to rest, free of guilt. Do your best of what you can do, and don’t beat yourself up for what you can’t, because at the end of the day if you take care of your body, it will take care of you. - Sam Jenkins

Women’s Heath Checks In a modern age it is essential that we all take responsibility for our own health. But how can we do this without getting paranoid by endlessly checking dodgy internet sites or becoming our GP’s annoying weekly visitor? Simple. Follow a few easy home health checks to monitor our own bodies for changes and spot early signs. Women are recommended to have a general check-up with their GP every year. If you are at high risk of a particular disease, for example, if you have a family history, it is recommended that you get checked more frequently, and at an earlier age.

KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• S kin, monitor freckles, moles and skin blemishes for changes in size,

shape or colour or anything unusual such as pain or itch. See your doctor if you notice anything unusual.

• D ental care, you can reduce your risk of tooth decay, gum disease and

tooth loss if you clean your teeth regularly, drink fluoridated water, eat a low-sugar diet, and visit the dentist at least once a year

• M ental and emotional health, if you are experiencing symptoms such as

intense sadness, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, or have had changes to your eating or sleeping habits, see your doctor to discuss these symptoms.

• C ervical Screening Test, this is an important screening test to pick up signs of irregularities that could lead to cervical cancer if not treated. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. As of December 2017, the Pap test has been replaced by the Cervical Screening Test, which detects human papillomavirus (HPV) It is recommended that you have the test every five years until you are 74.

• B reast cancer health checks for women, if you notice any breast changes,

new rashes or suddenly inverted nipples be sure to visit your GP within the next week. Women aged between 50 and 74 years who have no personal or family history of breast cancer are recommended to have a screening mammogram (breast X-ray) every two years. If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, your doctor can help you to decide how often you need to be screened.

• O varian cancer is often called the "silent" killer because many times

there are no symptoms until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Early- stage ovarian cancer symptoms include: bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, urinary symptoms such as urgency (always feeling like you have to go) or frequency (having to go often).

Make self-checking part of your regular routine.

LIVING WITH

“My anxiety convinces me that everyone hates me.”

“My anxiety convinces me that everyone hates me.” When I read this sentence, it immediately resonated with me. This article popped up on my radar a few days ago and I instantly knew it was something I wanted to discuss openly. Why? Because, although mental health is talked about more often than it was a decade or two ago, it still comes with a societal stigma often associated with invisible illness. What’s heartening for me, as someone who struggles with anxiety on occasion, is when I get to talk to other men and women who are brave enough to open themselves up freely and talk about their mental illness in varying forms. In this edition, it was Amanda Allen who spoke about her struggle with alcoholism and depression. A woman I fiercely admire; strong both mentally and physically, a high-achiever an exceptional sportsperson and a determined business woman. It’s hard for any of us to understand how or why depression can creep into the life of someone surrounded by so much success, but this is exactly why it is remarkably brave of her to be able to share this with others. Not only has she spoken of her depression, but she took a month out of her life to run 1,000km to raise money to treat depression and suicide, while raising awareness for mental health in rural Queensland. Once you choose to openly talk about your mental illness, be it anxiety or depression, one thing that becomes apparent is that it doesn’t discriminate. One of my best friends whom I’ve known for more than 20 years, suffers from chronic anxiety which paralyzes her. She has panic attacks and doesn’t want to leave the house. I’ve been her friend for more than 20 years, but it was only this year that we spoke about it. I feel closer to her than ever. She’s a mother of three young boys, but puts on a brave face to function while they are around. The highly successful and motivated women I work with, it was only this year we all shared our experiences with anxiety. We all have varying 40 www.byronlifemag.com

symptoms, from heart palpitations and difficulty breathing to panic attacks and lack of motivation to leave the house. In fact, it is often high-achieving members of society who do suffer from anxiety and or depression frequently. Whether it’s brought on by societal expectation or the expectations we place on ourselves to be the best at what we do, despite being intelligent and driven members of society, there’s no simple solution to ‘switch off’ those feelings of selfloathing, sadness or worry. So, what does anxiety look like to those on the outside? Unfortunately, it’s not a one-size-fits-all illness. It can manifest itself in many ways and people experience varying symptoms. Personally, stress usually triggers my anxiety and I shut down. It’s self-destructive in a way, because if I’m stressed about having too much to do, shutting down and spending a day on the couch is the last thing I should do. It’s not relaxing or helping my stress in any way, because my anxiety increases the longer I go without doing anything. I become a social outcast. I don’t want to go outside or go for a walk. I don’t want to talk to my friends. I’ll avoid their messages, even though I desperately want to talk to someone. I won’t

be able to sleep because I lay awake stressing about everything I didn’t get done that day. And the next morning, I’ll be back on the couch, convinced that I need to relax for the anxiety to pass, crying because I don’t know how to deal with anything in my life right at that moment. The simplest of tasks; washing a load of dishes, doing a load of laundry; these seem to hard. I’ll just sit here on the couch and stress some more about not doing anything. It’s a vicious cycle. For me, the feeling does eventually pass, I don’t know how, it just does. Then for weeks on end I become the most productive person on the planet. I prep my food, exercise daily, plan my fortnightly budgets, interview people for articles, write editorial, meet clients and attend meetings. But while right now I might be functioning like Wonder Woman, I know one day again, I’ll be that person crying on the couch because the simple task of making something for breakfast will be too hard. If someone you care about opens up and talks to you about their anxiety or depression, please don’t tell them that they just need to relax or cheer up. Because if it were that easy, we would have done it a long time ago.

Do you struggle with saying “no” ? Do you spend lots of time discussing how to create an acceptable story to get out of a situation? Do you worry about making up a false excuse and being found out?

Brigit Pearl life coach and founder of Womens Wisdom School

I

n my counseling work, I observe that women experience a lot of distress about saying “no” to requests by others. Their solution is often to just make up a fake excuse, instead of saying that they simply don’t want to do it. The reason given, they do not want to upset the other person. Lots of time and energy is burnt up in manufacturing the perfect excuse and considering what reason could be acceptable and how we get away with the fib. Why do we believe telling a lie is less hurtful than admitting that we do not want to do something? The reason is self deception. Firstly, we believe that the other person will not notice that we are lying to them. Secondly we think that a ‘made up” reason is less hurtful than the truth. Here is the catch. Most likely they will sense that you are lying, but of course they will not tell you because it’s too awkward. Why? Because they know that you can not admit to it. So they pretend to accept the fake excuse. However, inside they still have an emotional reaction. How does it feel being lied to?

This does not make for good relationships. Its also not good for your self esteem. Lies create distrust, resentment, suspicion, distance and loss of confidence. Not a good basis for intimacy and love. Not a way of avoiding pain. So how to handle it then?? How to ‘say no” and create a good outcome? Learn how to speak your truth with respect, love and grace. Be honest and compassionate;be civil and nice about it. Acknowledge the other persons’ feelings, such as being disappointed or let down. If appropriate, apologize for causing them hurt. You could share your concerns and feelings and reasons for saying “no”. Tell them its not easy for you to say no. You can even tell them how much it would mean to you, if they respect your reason. Sometimes a simple” I don’t like it” can create clarity. Have the inner strength to accept that

you might not please the other person without resenting them. Give yourself permission to look after your own needs first. Do not catastrophise the outcome. Trust that they will get over it because you have treated them with respect by being truthful. It might feel scary at first, but the more often you choose speaking your truth, the more practised you will become. And you will feel good about yourself and be respected for your courage. The outcome will be that you have respect for yourself, peace of mind and are a trustworthy friend.

Well, we all know that lies create hurt, disappointment, anger. How do we react to this? We lose trust in the other person and we withdraw. The worst is; that we become suspicious, expecting they will lie again.

Get Ready for Autumn We couldn’t have asked for a better start to autumn, the peak time for sowing food crops. The beautiful rain has really soaked in to the soil, almost guaranteeing successful harvests. All you need to do is feed the soil with plenty of wellcomposted organic matter, and start planting. The cabbage family (Brassicas) is perhaps the mainstay of the winter vegetable garden. Broccoli and kale are great producers. You’ll start harvesting the kale within a few weeks. The broccoli will take a bit longer, maybe 8-12 weeks for the first, large head to be fully ready. But then, once you remove that head, most varieties will continue to produce heaps of side shoots, so you’ll be eating broccoli for months. Cabbages and cauliflower, especially ‘Violet Sicilian’ cauliflower, which produces gorgeous large, purple heads, are also great to grow. Peas and snow peas are another winter treat. The climbing varieties will probably give you a greater yield, but the bush ones are great if you don’t want to bother creating a structure to support the climbers. This doesn’t need to be very sophisticated - a few tall stakes, about 2m high, placed in a circle and secured at the top with some twine, will do the job nicely.

Broad beans can go in now, along with dill, rocket, coriander, shallots and spinach. Asian greens like bok choy, tatsoi and pak choi are also really good to grow because they are so quick you can start picking only a few weeks after planting. Add plenty of flowers to the vegetable garden to help keep the pests away; choose edible varieties if you want to be able to eat everything you grow. White alyssum may help to deter the cabbage moth which produces all those caterpillars. Upland cress is said to be a good bait crop for those. Plant successive crops, a few weeks apart, to extend your harvesting season. Once everything is growing, you need to pay attention to what is happening in the garden. Be prepared to tolerate a bit of damage (humans aren’t the only animals that need food!) but take action quickly if the pests are taking more than their fair share. Do consider carefully what sprays you use, as not all are safe to use on food, and some will also harm beneficial insects. Our horticulturists talk to lots of local gardeners, and every day we learn something new from one of them. We love to share this information, so come and have a chat.

Confessions Of My Plant Growing Addiction Fi had always loved nature but it wasn’t until she moved out of home and planted her first veggie patch that she fell in love. Before this she dabbled in bush regeneration at school and helped in the veggie patch at home, she even had a bookshelf containing gardening books.

“My Nan had been giving me gardening books as presents for years, she recognised something in me before I did I reckon,” said Fi. Fi’s passion for plants developed further when she started working at the iconic nursery, Eden at Byron. She cherishes her role as a ‘Plant Home Finder’ at the local nursery and has been part of the team for 15 years.

“I fell into the best job in the world,” she said. It was with great pride that Fi bought her first home with her dad four years ago. The two had been living together for nine years since he came for a visit and never went home and it was here that she created her beautiful gardens and extensive veggie patch.

“I actually had the gardens drawn up the day before the auction and the first thing to be moved in was my beautiful soil that I’d been working on for years. I think I may have freaked out my neighbours at first!” She said. These days, however, Fi ‘s

You can't have butterflies without caterpillars!

neighbours are more than supportive. In fact, the nearby community are always welcome to explore Fi’s veggie patch and she invites them to enjoy her homegrown vegetables as much as they like.

“I am actually a bit of a lazy cook,” said Fi. “I have an addiction to growing plants but not cooking. I love giving my neigbours free rein in my gardens, it gives me an excuse to plant more and occasionally I get something tasty in return!” It is the sense of community and symbiosis that inspires Fi’s story. The gentle way that her garden is nurtured, loved, grown and then given away, to return in nutritious, loving ways from her neighbours.

TIP

You can grow parsley, rocket, rosemary, oregano and society garlic together in a big pot. It's great for a salad, stir fry or pasta base when you’re too lazy to go shopping.

Fi believes we can all do our part in small ways and shouldn’t overwhelm ourselves with the huge task of being totally selfsustainable.

“Growing some cool stuff to help whip up a meal is something we can all do. The important thing is to not make it a stress, there are too many other really important things to stress about besides grasshoppers on your bok choy!” “I think taking the time to grow things, the watching, the patience, the sense of achievement, the realisation it doesn't have to be prefect are important things for 'us' as a society to acknowledge.”

First veg: I remember when my housemate and I ate my first and only watermelon. Delicious Fav veg: Eggplant looks super sexy and is very versatile. Easiest: Climbing beans, stupidly productive and they make you look like 'a gardener' Hardest: I really struggle with capsicum. LIFE COACH & COUNSELLOR WOMENS WISDOM SCHOOL It depends how one uses social media. Social media enables us to exchange information with people anywhere in the world. That’s magical. And it can be useful in finding out what people are up to. On the other side, it is a huge time waster. Especially when one spends every spare moment scrolling through staged selfies posted by people one hardly knows instead of connecting with the people around us? We get distracted by notifications, ads and pop up windows when we are just quickly checking something on our device. Before we know it, we spent much longer than we wanted to being glued to a device.

I think generally it is a positive. It has opened up so many avenues for communication and knowledge with the outside world. It has also created unlimited opportunities for businesses and for local people to get started in small business.

Just asking if social media has been a positive or negative influence on society is similar to asking if pizza & lasagna have been a positive or negative for our society.

This has proven to be an invaluable tool for businesses like ourselves who want to grow and connect with our customers.

That’s what we love!

Social media has also made it easier for people to keep in touch and to catch up with those that otherwise you may lose contact with.

I’m Italian; We love pizza & mandolin, wine & lasagne!

We don’t care if it is positive or negative! People can choose what they like!

To me it seems that the more time we spend looking at these pretend images the more we miss out on being engaged with the real people around us.

A new approach to problemsolving at

Mullum High A place of academic excellence, renowned for celebrating individuality and achievement, Mullumbimby High School has stepped outside of the square to advance the learning approach of its students with STEM. STEM brings together Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines into one practical problem-solving lesson. The subject was introduced into the Year 7 curriculum last year with great success and now has been embedded into the Stage 4 curriculum, with all students in years 7 and 8 participating in the subject. The purpose of STEM as a stand-alone subject is to enable students to become self-directed learners and to monitor and adjust their approaches to learning. It engages students in a group design activity that encourages them to take responsibility for their planning, selfassessing, monitoring and reflection. Year 7 classes participate in a double lesson (100 minutes per fortnight) and Year 8 classes have three lessons per semester. STEM enables students to challenge their own capabilities and seek improvement in their own outcomes. When students are provided with a problem, the challenge is to solve the problem.

In many cases the answers and solutions come when they try and try again. Hands-on problem-solving with STEM Many weekly challenges are focused on students developing team building skills and to work collaboratively to solve set challenges. Examples include; Design and build a strong bridge that spans 45cm. The bridges will be weighed at the end and the price of construction added up. It will then be load tested and the strongest bridge will win. Catapult Students design, build and test a model catapult using dowel, paddle pop sticks, skewers and tape. The challenge is to launch the marshmallow the furthest – this year’s record was 17.5 metres. Next term the school will move into the designing and building of a sustainable home. Students will investigate renewable energies such as solar to ensure that their house is as energy efficient as possible.

At Mullumbimby High School, the future is explored today.

FROTHING ON THE UNDERGROUND I have lived most of my life in the crystal fuelled, hyperbole-stricken enclave of madness of the Byron Shire. Much like an offspring with an eccentric parent I have been suckled on the never ending new age madness of the Byron Shire. All I ever wanted was a normal life and instead all I got was ionised water, crystal bowl chanting circles, activated nuts, Kale, Quinoa and Kombucca. As an adult still residing in the bubble, I have seen hundreds if not thousands enter its quasi-religious walls, pleading for a hand-out of meaning and purpose. If I finally have one, clear realisation after my thirty-six years here it is life lived on the fringe can only ever satisfy a fringe of ourselves. If the first thing we lose, as we lose ourselves to new age wisdom is our sense of humour then why is the most iconic image of the new age, the laughing buddha? Life is meant to be lived in the middle ground. If you’re thirsty after an intense mediation session, crack a beer, if you need a break from gazing at your navel gaze at a screen instead. Tired of chanting? Why not cheer on a sporting team? No one is judging. In this issue of the froth we go a little bit underground, with two underground shredders. Yerin, the pizza making, rodeo riding wave destroyer and Tahlia Bourke who spends too much time in the ocean to be in the spotlight. Both pure shredders, both underground frothers.

HEY YEZ DOG, SO WHEN DID YOU FIRST ARRIVE IN DA BAY. I arrived age 2 watching my 3 older sisters 12, 14 and 16 surf the pass (but mostly just sat in the Shorey eating sand!) So, didn’t think about it that much. Between then and age 15 I was back and forth between here and Evans Head, dad and my younger brother living with me down there and my middle sister and Mum up here. At 15 I just thought it was better than school to be honest.

IS IT HARDER TO GET MOTIVATED TO SURF THESE DAYS WITH BYRON BEING SO CROWDED? Yeah, it’s hard to get motivation to deal with all the idiots and kooks that get in your way and negotiate the traffic through town and find a park. So yeah, a lot different now. I just go down the beach 90% of the time and avoid the pests and wanna be minsters unless it’s pumping and I gotta get the right frame of mind to get my share.

WHAT YEARS DID YOU COMPETE ON THE WQS (WORLD QUALIFYING SERIES) AND WERE THE HIGH AND LOWS. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO WALK AWAY FROM IT? 56 www.byronlifemag.com

It was around 2002 to 2006?? Can’t remember exactly? Fun times, wins, friends and adventures were the highs Debt, weak sponsors, transit, cheap travel options, sleeping in cars and shit waves and injuries were the lows. I had a real bad reoccurring knee injury and was 30,000.00 in debt and working in the pizza shop when I was back. I was winning some money but going backwards. Guess it all added up to a disappointing decision to leave it alone.

WORKING AT LEGENDS PIZZA, WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE FUNNIEST/SCARIEST MOMENTS AND WHO ARE THE BIGGEST ‘LEGENDS’ AT LEGENDS PIZZA. Both my bosses have been legends literally, they have supported me through life and my endeavours. Too many legends to mention over the 18 years I’ve been there. Too many idiots to want to recall, we see people at their worst in the early hours of the morning. Attempts of robbery at gun and knife point, drunks asleep on tables, to naked ladies in the back, front, dancing on tables, let’s just say etc etc etc 5) Craig corndog Cornish, Ben Simpson, Owen Walker, Kahn Anderson and Me!

TAHLIA, IF YOU COULD SUM UP WHAT SURFING MEANS TO YOU IN ONE SENTENCE WHAT WOULD IT BE? Surfing is my saviour, it keeps me healthy, humble and happy!

WHAT AGE DID YOU START AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FIRST MEMORIES OF THE OCEAN/SURFING? I’ve always been a water baby, even before I could walk I had a love for the ocean. I started surfing at a young age (5-6yrs), and some of my first (I still consider them some of my best) are the Sunday mornings spent at Broken Head with the Family. My Dad would usually be down there at first light to surf with his mates, and then my mum, older brother and I would cruise down a few hours later to join the fun. I learnt to stand on a pink Maddog foamy that my Dad bought me one Christmas. He’d surf out the back and then come in and push me into little runners and I’d just play around all morning, always the last one out of the water :) I loved it from day one, always frothing to get down to the beach, and wanting to go surfing with the big boys!

IS IT DIFFERENT BEING A SURFER NOW TO BACK THEN? This part of the world (in my life time) has always been quite accepting of female surfers, though I believe there are a lot more girls getting in the water these days, which is epic!! There’s definitely been a shift from women's surfing being focused around competing and performance to more about having fun and experimenting with surfing styles (riding funky/ retro boards) and just doing it for the enjoyment and social side. To be honest I don’t feel I'm old enough to really say I've seen a major change in my life of surfing, but in this town, I've definitely seen major growth in the women’s surf culture and the amount of gurfers rocking it out there yewww!

HAVE YOU EVER HAD AMBITION TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SURFER? Yeah for sure! I feel like every Grom has that ambition of travelling the globe with friends and being paid to ‘live the dream’, and I definitely aspired to do that when I was young, but for me my dreams were a little different at that age. When I was 8 my father lost his battle with a brain tumour, which led me to stop surfing for a number of years. It wasn't that I’d lost any passion, but obviously it was a tough time for my family, and the connection between the beach and memories of my father were too much for my Mum to cope with. Though I knew my surfing journey wasn't over, and my connection with the ocean would draw me back in at some stage. And it did when I was around 13. I just had this urge to get back in the water, to follow in my Dad’s footsteps and pursue my passion for the ocean. So I took that same pink foamy out and taught myself again. From then on for me surfing was so much more than a sport or a career path, it’s my lifestyle and one that I'm very grateful for. I think the way I was re-introduced has moulded me to the kind of surfer I am, and the fact that I don't really have much of a competitive nature when it comes to being in the ocean, I feel that when there’s pressure I don't enjoy it as much. So, I prefer to just do it for the fun, because it brings me so much happiness!! But hey, l can still live the dream without being a pro!

HOW HAS SURFING HELPED YOU GET THROUGH HARD TIMES IN YOUR LIFE? I can honestly say surfing has saved my life, and I truly don't know where I’d be without it. After losing my Dad in 2006, my reconnection with the ocean was a different one, surfing was not just a sport, but a way to help me ease my mind and heal through the tough times. After losing my brother late last year while I was travelling through Central America, I feel as though my connection and need for the ocean is more apparent than ever. The ocean is my happy place, where my life is put into perspective and my mind is always filled with sunshine, even on the days of grey. It’s my meditation, a sort of therapy I guess, it’s my way of dealing with life's obstacles and I’m not sure where or who I’d be if I didn't have surfing as an outlet (or my drug as I call it). It’s definitely not all peace and quiet out on the water in Byron though, and I also have to thank the beautiful surfing community, as even though most of relationships don't often venture onto the land, just a simple conversation or smile can change someone’s day, and the amount of love and support I feel out there is amazing and has really helped me through these tough times.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE 'UNDERGROUND' GURFERS. OR GIRL SURFERS YOU ADMIRE THAT ARE NOT IN THE SPOTLIGHT? To be honest, any girl who is smiling and having fun in the water has my admiration. Because in the end isn't that why we do it? One surfer I do really admire is my childhood friend Holly Mountjoy. I admire Holly for so many reasons, but as a fellow surfer she's a frotherrrrr! When surfing with Hol I always feel an explosion of happiness as she's always so positive and encouraging in the water, never too serious. She is outgoing and courageous and is never afraid to push her limits in the swells (which always motivates me) but most importantly she radiates stoke!!! Its gurfers like these that truly empower women to get into the water, and I admire that… I love nothing more than seeing chicks owning it out there! No matter your skill level, as long as you're having fun you're rocking it!

EXPERT ADVICE

from Brett Munro

When ordering a custom board, it's important to be honest about where you're at with your surfing, perhaps take along your old favourite to show your shaper what has been working for you in the past. Or, if you've had boards, either custom or stock from that shaper before, that's a good start as he may have records of all of your previous specs. Like our bodies, surfboards lose their shape and memory over time. We all have special memories of magic moments, sessions and journeys that we'll never forget, but so true for most of us that the reality is like the old saying: "The older I get, the better I was! " No matter where you are at with your surfing, we need to ride equipment that is working for us and remember to grow older with grace and with as much style as you can hang onto. In short, get real with your shaper and enjoy the journey!

Taking the Leap E BUYING SIDER BEFOR N O C O T S G RD THIN OM SURFBOA A NEW CUST

2. Finding the right shaper for you

Byron Life Magazine caught up with local Surfer/ Shaper Brett Munro and discussed the best approach to making the big leap.

Like many things in life, when making a significant purchase or seeking advice or wisdom, some people just resonate better with each other and it helps to get along with them. So, when you are ready to take that leap ensure you have a good gut feeling when shopping around and talking to your local shapers. The type of board you are chasing may also impact what kind of shaper you are seeking. Some shapers specialise in certain styles and shapes, while others may be an all-rounder. There are young and old shapers here in The Bay that are offering so much variety and uniqueness that it is almost impossible not to find one that you will click with. A good shaper will take the time to ensure they cater to all of your needs and wants from your new board. And the best way to achieve this is through having a good old yarn with them so they can get to know you better and figure out the best combination to suit you.

1. Where to begin?

3. Surfboard Materials

What kind of board do I actually want? With so much variety to choose from and science attached to boards these days it can be really overwhelming trying to choose a new board; the options are almost endless. Keep in mind your ability and what kind of waves you will be surfing more often than not.

The type of materials can vary from board to board and from shaper to shaper. For example, from epoxy and foam boards to wooden boards. There is a vast amount of science-driven materials out there now that have been developed over the years and it is worth chatting to your shaper to learn more.

Whether you have been surfing since you were a child or you have just realised why us surfers are so happy all the time, taking the leap to purchase a new board can be an exciting, yet somewhat emotional rollercoaster kind of an experience. For some people the thought of having that conversation with your local shaper can be somewhat intimidating. Especially if you feel as though you are supposed to know the differences between all of the different rails, nose shapes, tails and fin set ups that can change your performance/ experience.

Munro Surfboards 2/29 Acacia St 02 6685 6211 58 www.byronlifemag.com

4. Colours & Artwork This is always to the discretion of the purchaser. Whether you are after a clean blank white stick or the most flaring flamboyant board around, your shaper will be able to assist you with your dream artwork.

5. Enjoying and growing with your new board Like most new toys, it can take a couple of rides before really starting to feel the differences in your new board. Depending on the wave, how you are feeling at the time, and the numerous other contributing factors whilst surfing, will no doubt vary your experience and feelings attached to that board. So, like all relationships in life, take time to get to know each other better. Learn to listen to each other and be sure to be patient and compromise at all times. Because the better you get to know each other and learn how to live together the more enjoyable that time will be.

A few weeks ago, we trialed a little competition on Facebook, calling photographers to submit their favourite surfing pics. It went off like a frog in a sock! We were overwhelmed with the response, so much so, we have decided to make it a regular thing. Check out this edition’s winning shot, captured by Shey Ivanov of his surfing dog, Kyza. We caught up with Shey to find out where his passion for photography began. “There is nothing more mesmerizing when everything just works together to create a magical moment, even if it is only for a split second. That's why I love doing what I do! Capturing that perfect moment that could be so easily missed with the blink of an eye!” What started as a hobby for photographer, Shey Ivanov, quickly turned into a full-time passion. Now, he’s in the process of turning that passion into a business with The Froth Lab. He started taking photos in Year 11 and when his sister won a photography competition in high school, it sparked his intrigue further. His family relocated to Byron Bay when Shey was a four-year-old from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Growing up close to the ocean, he has surfed since a young age and was drawn to take his camera into the water. “When I finally invested in my first underwater housing 9 years ago I turned my dream into reality. I created "The Froth Lab" and haven't looked back since,” he said. Shey has had his fair share of close calls while snapping epic shots, but none have ever waivered his passion. As if the standard long hold-downs, big wave beatings, rock washings and shark sightings weren’t enough, he was shooting in a rock pool in the Philippines when a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit. He’s also been close to being struck by lightning.

“The ocean is powerful, never turn your back on it and underestimate the unpredictability of it.” Shey’s pup is Kyza, an eight-year-old Australian Cattle x American Staffy. He adopted her from an R.S.P.C.A and learnt to swim at Belongil Beach three years ago. She follows Shey out into the surf with no fear of the waves. Check out www.thefrothlab.com to find out more info on photoshoot services by Shey and to purchase prints specializing in seascape, landscape, model and skyscape photography.

Planning a Surfing Trip to Bali? Check out these amazing breaks

Not just a honeymoon hideaway or a place to eat, pray, love; Bali is also one of the hottest destinations on the planet for sensational surf. While there is a myriad of places throughout Indonesia to ride epic waves, we’re keeping it simple with a guide to catching great waves in Bali itself. From beach breaks for beginners to huge barrels for the pros, these top three Balinese spots are easy to get to, which means you can stay close to the party action at night and get back in the water the next day. Like most great locations around Bali, you’ll need to get up early to beat the crowds, so not too many Bintangs the night before.

TIP - If you’re travelling with mates who aren’t great surfers, direct them to lesserknown Padang Padang rights, an easy wave which breaks in front of a beautiful white sandy beach. Ideal for beginners to progress from riding whitewater to unbroken waves.

Talk to local experts and surf coaches to know your limits before hitting the beach, you don’t want to end up in a whirlpool of thundering waves. The dry season is the peak surfing season and it typically runs from May through to September, this is when the famous waves of Uluwatu and Padang Padang break at their best.

Beginners – Surfing Kuta The most beginner-friendly beach to test your surfing skills is Kuta Beach. It’s close to the nightlife and tourist centre of Legian, so it’s easy for most people to find, even if it’s your first time in Bali. There are plenty of places to rent a surf board, so it’s a good opportunity to take a lesson with a pro. Trust us, you’ll have a far more enjoyable experience getting tips from someone who is a confident rider and who can teach you the basics to begin. A couple of lessons early on will save you days of frustrating failure later on. The soft tide and low height of the waves makes Kuta a good place to practice white water surfing, that’s riding the waves after they break and roll back toward the beach for a gentle introduction to getting up on your board. And hey, if you fall off, get back up and try, try again.

Expert – Surfing Keramas This powerful right-hander can produce some deep tube rides over a reef. It’s located past Sanur heading toward Gianyar. It used to be a secret hideaway but now is one of Bali’s most popular surf spots, but not as crowded as epic spots like Uluwatu or Padang Padang. This spot is best surfed in the wet season but can also be surfed through the dry season if conditions are right. This place can be surfed from waist high right through to triple overhead. Constant waves and a big swell can be found if you’re up early, an onshore wind may disrupt the barrel. The end section is shallow with a sharp reef, so caution should be taken.

Epic – Surfing Padang Padang Nicknamed the Balinese Pipeline, Padang Padang is similar to Hawaii’s epic pipeline. It breaks over a shallow coral reef and is known as one of the most dangerous and hollow waves in Bali, so is only for expert surfers who know what they are doing. You can find this gnarly left-hand point on the Bukit Peninsula. Because of its popularity it can get frustratingly busy with drop ins, but if you catch it early in the right conditions, it’s unforgettable.

Craziest

Coffee names

When it comes to coffee drinkers, there seems to be two distinctive groups. One which is quite happy with an instant hit coming from a jar first thing in the morning. While the other, who will proudly profess to being a coffee snob, will only take their caffeine infusion via a carefully extracted espresso expert from their favourite café. The latter, will also have a carefully scripted way of ordering said espresso. ‘Short mach, extra shot, double foam’ or ‘half-strength soy latte, extra hot with a shot of caramel.’ But no matter how much of an expert you think you are, there are some weird and wacky ways of ordering coffee around the world that just seem plain crazy to us here in Australia.

Swedish

Egg Coffee

Coffee

with Tonic

Becoming more popular in Keto circles, this method of coffee involves using an egg in replacement of milk for a silky texture, eliminating the bitterness for those who can’t stomach their brew straight black. While tonic is usually paired with vodka and lemon, this is a refreshing twist on offer for lovers of espresso. Great on a hot day, it is, quite literally, a shot of espresso poured over ice with tonic water.

Libbylou

For those who love the infusion of chocolate with coffee. Equal parts of mocha and white mocha with espresso and steamed milk without foam.

Red Eye

For those who need a jolt to start their heart in the morning, this is a dripped coffee with the addition of a shot of espresso for a more intense black coffee hit.

Amazing flavours. Unique blends. We’ve been roasting Organic, Fair Trade, Australian and Sustainably Grown coffees in Byron since 2005. Visit our roastery to taste our coffee, buy beans and more.

Did you know? While a ‘flat while’ may be one of the most common coffee orders here in Australia, that was because it was actually invented down under! I say down under, because like the pavlova, there is debate as to whether it was invented here or in New Zealand. Regardless, this coffee name was only introduced to the American market in recent years, so what seems standard to us, is a pretty crazy way of ordering your coffee in the USA.

Cooking with love provides food for the soul. As a young boy growing up in Kyoto, Japan, Kazz Nakahara developed a love of cuisine from his grandmother. He is just as passionate about food today as he was as a five-year-old boy in his grandmother’s kitchen.

“I feel inspired and happy when I’m cooking,” he said.

His first teacher was his grandmother and for the past 45 years, Kazz has been honing and perfecting his skills, learning from many more masters along his journey for the love of food. “I will never stop learning, this is my life!” He has been living in Byron Bay for the past 18 years and is one of the intricate sushi chefs at O Sushi Restaurant. Where do you find food inspiration? “I’m not a fan of expensive or famous eateries, I prefer exploring authentic food-making at small places. TARGA

On a typical balmy Byron evening, our Byron Life Magazine crew hit the town in search of gastronomic gratification. Our destination; Targa. An institution famous for its European fare and friendly service. We wanted to see if its reputation lived up to the hype, and we were not disappointed.

We arrived on sunset and were greeted by warm smiles and an inviting ambience. Outdoor lights twinkled against the darkening night sky, illuminating the path indoors where the glow was golden. Our group of 12 enjoyed a combination of comfy booth seating and rustic wooden chairs while our youngest lad, only eight-months-old, was embraced and given a high chair to sit in for the evening. To start, our table shared a range of tempting nibbles to get the taste buds raring into action. This is one of the immediate highlights of Targa, there is a selection of sensational share plates to choose from, from grilled prawns or eggplant with mint, to shaved Lismore prosciutto. You could make the entire evening about fine wine and tasty tapas if you so desired. I was particularly impressed with the seared chorizo sausage which is locally made. Who knew you could pack so much flavour into a sausage? The grilled Byron Bay haloumi with oregano and lemon was also a stand-out. I naively thought that haloumi was haloumi, no matter how you sliced it, but our table was in agreeance that this was the best darn haloumi we had ever tasted. Although you could quite happily snack on starters all evening, we opted for mains as well, after being impressed by the varied options. Targa has introduced its new dinner menu in the past month and the flavour combinations are intriguing, so much so we wouldn’t blame you for returning every night of the week to try something new. Stand-outs worth both a mention and standing-ovations include the Portuguese Pork n Clams with fried potatoes, peppers and white wine; or the Beef Short Rib, slow cooked with eggplant caponata potato torte. I’m a bit simpler and love a good steak, which also means I’m very particular about how my steak is cooked. Needless to say, the chef nailed my medium-rare. My Angus Beef Sirloin and hand-cut sweet potato chips were cooked to perfection, and the addition of silverbeet, raisins and pine nuts was surprisingly delightful. I’m not actually a fan of silverbeet normally but they found a way to make it taste amazing! I’m almost ashamed to say I couldn’t review dessert because I was so full from dinner, but really that’s another nod to the kitchen for serving such incredible food. I’ll be back another evening for coffee and sweets.

Targa is one of those dream destinations open for whatever takes your fancy. Hearty breakfasts, long lunches, decadent dinner or aperitivo afternoons with discounted drinks. Come at me $12 Moet! You’ll find Targa on the corner of Middleton and Marvel Streets. Bookings aren’t essential, but certainly recommended as it’s popular every night of the week. Bon Appetit!

“I’ve Come to Say Goodbye” a Travel Memoir by BARBARA CARMICHAEL Written in a warm, conversational style as if the author is sharing a cup of chai with the reader, “I’ve Come to Say Goodbye” is based on Barbara’s many journeys to India, and her diaries that include sketches and photographs. The author is also an artist, and has previously been invited as Australian Representative to symposiums in both Dubai, and more recently, Baku in Azerbaijan. Her writing echoes her painting style, adding layers of colour and texture with her words as she would with a brush to canvas, hoping to evoke the same images in the mind of the reader as she captures the colour, chaos and light of India. She describes her arrival in Mumbai on her first visit. “I could see how some people would find India daunting…maybe too daunting. There is no easy entry, no way of slowly easing oneself into India. Like biting into a raw chilli, my shock was immediate. The air was close. The people were close: in fact millions of people were close. I found it hard to imagine myself out there, amongst it. It scared me.”

Ellen Briggs’ easy going, friendly nature belies the dark wit that lurks beneath. She has made an art from of sneaking in politically incorrect jokes at the end of her ‘nice yarns’. She was a national Finalist in Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s search for new talent in 2007 and winner of Foxtel Comedy Channel’s ‘Be A Comedian’. She was chosen to perform alongside Mandy at the Up Front Gala at Melbourne Town Hall. Ellen has travelled extensively throughout Australia doing various corporate and comedy shows, and recently did a tour of Hong Kong comedy clubs. She lives on her farm in Mullumbimby with her husband, twin boys and various animal family members.

Barbara’s memoir takes the reader on a journey through Rajasthan, as one by one, she introduces the people and places that have left such an indelible impression in her heart. It is the story of her friendship with Tarun, a young Indian man and his family, and how through their eyes, she fell in love with India. After overcoming her initial anxiety, Barbara was soon travelling on the back of Tarun’s motorbike, exploring the lake city of Udaipur, a far cry from the safe, suburban surrounds of her home on Sydney’s leafy north shore. Over a ten year period, she travelled back and forth to India, spending time with Tarun, his wife and family. He became her brother. With each trip came new adventures and the strengthening of their friendship. “Sometimes you meet someone and you just know you will be friends for life.” She was able to spend the traditional festivals with the family…she was no longer a tourist. India had captured her heart. “Before going to India, I can’t say I was a true believer in destiny, but India was to teach me differently. In fact, an astrologer in Udaipur would tell me many years later while reading my palm, that there was a faint, almost invisible line running parallel to my life line and he believed it was that of Tarun. Was it possible that the story of our friendship had been written long before we had even met?” Her experiences were many and varied. She was run over by a rickshaw in peak hour traffic: was booked into a hotel that was in the process of being demolished and tried to sleep while bricks crashed around her. On an overnight train to Jodhpur, she awoke to find four men standing at the end of her bunk watching her sleep. Tarun takes her to visit Ravla Khempur a property, owned by one of his friends - the setting for the now famous “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. When Barbara receives news of Tarun’s sudden death, she is devastated. She knows she must go back to India. That’s where he’ll be, she tells herself. That’s where I’ll be able to say goodbye. Barbara now lives in Byron Bay, Australia. This is her first book. www.barbaracarmichael.com.au www.byronlifemag.com 69
