Whitsunday Food Reviews
“When the going gets tough, put your BIG girl pants on! This is what you do and you are amazing at it.” This is what my best mate said to me over the weekend. Feeling completely overwhelmed with my workload, I felt that nothing was going as planned and all I wanted to do was pack my bags and run. Ever felt like this? I took a deep breath and in my mind started unpacking my bags. I thought about everything she had said, and wanted to share her advice with you all. It really did help me and I hope it will do the same for you. For anyone who is in business, some days are tough, and can last for weeks, but it’s in those times you just have to put your big girl pants on and suck it up. All you can do is your very best and what is ahead of you, is not always in your control. So work hard, but when the workday is done, let go of it and enjoy your “me” time, whatever that might be. No amount of stress or worrying will change anything. So, rest when you can and be ready and of a calm and peaceful mind when it’s time to step back in the ring again. Only this state of mind will give you the perspective you need to keep moving forward. It takes a special kind of person to be in business and no matter how good and easy life may seem to others, if you are in business, you will understand what I mean.

Family Law Fictions friends and family often offer advice when someone they care about is going through a separation. However, it is important that those involved receive proper legal advice, to clarify common misconceptions, including: 1. MYTH “My former partner won’t let me spend time with the children, so I can’t be required to pay child support.” Child support is calculated based on each parent’s income and the actual amount of time they each currently care for the children. Therefore, even if one parent wants more time and the other refuses, it doesn’t decrease the amount payable. 2. MYTH “The day I moved out must be considered the date of separation.” Parties can be considered to have separated, yet still living under the same roof. The law recognises that parties may be required to remain in the same residence although they are not living as a couple, due to financial or other circumstances. 3. MYTH “My former spouse/partner and I have verbally agreed on how to divide our property, so we don’t need any legal advice.” An agreement remains unenforceable if it is not properly formalised, meaning a party has no recourse if the other reneges or does not comply with the property agreement. There are also tax advantages available in some circumstances upon formalising a property agreement pursuant to family law legislation. If you or someone you know requires assistance, please contact our experienced and professional team at McKays Family Law on (07) 4963 0880. BY COURTNEY AITKEN

TAX AUDITS
what triggers them and who gets them? Well, sometimes the tax office will target a specific type of employee or business group to focus on, such as teachers or property developers, but that doesn’t mean every teacher and property developer will get audited. In the case of employees, they will send a letter warning them that they will be looking closely at their returns and giving them the opportunity to amend previous returns if they think they may have made a mistake. Next, they will ask some of those with large claims to provide proof, which means they have to send in all their receipts and bank statements and details of how things were calculated and on what basis. Anything not provided or unsatisfactorym deduction is denied and the assessment amended with penalties and interest depending on whether they think you did it deliberately or by mistake. GST audits - amend a couple of BAS returns and trigger a please explain letter. Don’t ignore it or you could end up with an audit to deal with. Large refunds and no income - automatic GST audit. Incorrect ABN’s used on TFN declarations or payment summaries, please explain or audit. Employee obligation audits - complaints from current or former employees about unpaid super, paying contractors, lodging incorrect payment summaries or not lodging them at all. All those things can trigger an audit. Payroll tax audit - incorrect information on the tax return, workcover details not matching the payroll tax lodgements or the tax return information. All of these can trigger a payroll tax audit or at the very least a please explain letter. Cash businesses - the tax office can look at bank accounts so if they look at a cash business bank account and see more money coming in than declared on the tax return, this will trigger a please explain letter and an unsatisfactory answer will trigger an audit. So do you handle it yourself or get your accountant involved? Get your accountant involved. I have handled all of these situations and the best results always come from dealing with the issue quickly and confidently and assuring the tax auditor that no wrong doing has been going on. I am able to give this assurance by knowing what they are looking for, understanding how it works and being able to provide the information promptly and correctly.
At Synergy, we are able to plan for any self-managed superannuation fund, from start up to providing pensions. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. To experience the Synergy difference, come in and meet with our friendly team to discuss your financial and taxation needs.
A client recently had a call from the Office of State Revenue (OSR) who thought they had gone over the payroll tax threshold, because of cross matching reporting methods. They checked their calculations and they had reported correctly but didn’t know what figures the OSR was looking at. I was able to look at the tax return that had been prepared by their previous accountant and saw that they had included the super amount in the wages amount on the tax return even though the super had already been reported in a different field. A simple data entry mistake like this had caused the problem but once identified it was easy to explain and have fixed.

You can get audit insurance to cover the cost of your accountant being involved in an audit and this is something we offer to all our clients as it is much cheaper under a group policy than as an individual. Of course, it will not cover penalties if you’ve done something wrong!

Being surrounded by Galapagos Tortoises is an experience Judy Porter will never forget. The Galapagos Islands had been a bucket-list destination since age 10, and the highlight was the rare opportunity to snorkel with marine iguanas. Originally a photo-journalist from South Gippsland, Victoria, Judy has been in the Whitsundays for 20 years where she is the committee secretary for the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce. Her company outgrew the number of hours she could commit, so the business was moved to Brisbane to be managed by a business partner, giving Judy the opportunity to study psychology and give more time to the local community. “The Chamber of Commerce is something I feel passionately about as a way of uniting small businesses. Growing a company from startup is a hard road; small businesses should be offered as much support and mentorship as possible, and to feel part of a community of businesses,” Judy said. The mission statement for the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce is “Uniting, supporting, connecting and representing the Whitsunday business community.” It gives members a voice and platform within an influential business advocacy. “As membership grows, so does our ability to influence and impact upon government policy formulation affecting our region. Why be “one of one” when you can be “one of many,” Judy said. On the weekend you can find her “running like a lunatic” up to Honeyeater’s Lookout on the Great Whitsunday Walk.

Kelli was born in St Kilda, Victoria, but has an American accent. She later lived in New York City and then transferred to the Whitsundays to become the front office manager at Daydream Island Resort. “Living in a resort town with an American accent leads to some pretty funny conversations. A lot of people assume I’m a tourist and give me advice on what to see and do, but most of the time it’s completely made up! I’ve lived here for nearly 20 years so I just go along with it. It’s quite entertaining,” she said. Kelli is the general manager for the Boathouse Apartments by Outrigger at the Port of Airlie. With Cruise Whitsundays now located at the Port of Airlie, Kelli believes the Boathouse Apartments offer the most convenient accommodation to access the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. “Every apartment has amazing views over the Port of Airlie Marina to the Whitsunday Islands. We have high-end retail for shopping on the ground floor, as well as a selection of quality restaurants and cafes. Our guests are only a short walk from the Cruise Whitsunday terminal, day and overnight sailing tours, and sunset cruises. It couldn’t be more convenient,” she said. Kelli’s husband owns Addicted to Detail, a well-known high-end car detailing business, and the couple have two children, daughter Teggun, who started her own business when she was 12 and is never short of ideas, and their son Kai, who is an avid motocross rider with daredevil stunts that scare the life out of his mother. Teggun and her mum both share a passion for art, painting with acrylic and sketching, a past time Kelli wishes she had more time for. Growing up in the Whitsundays, Teggun and Kai had never seen snow, so the family enjoyed a snowboarding vacation to Mont Tremblant, north of Montreal in Canada this past Christmas.

Bens face is one of the most recognizable in the local real estate industry, but his reputation for results didn’t happen overnight. After many years forming relationships and making friends in the local media industry, Ben made the decision to move into Real Estate. It was a decision which has turned out to be the most rewarding challenge he has faced. “Completely changing my career path meant starting fresh, so I made a point of learning as much as I could before putting all the pieces in play. “The reward for effort soon starts becoming apparent when you realise you are making a real difference in people’s lives. By doing a great job I know I am making a difference and that’s the ultimate reward for me,” Ben said. Oh what I would give for just one more bottle of My Queen.
The silliest thing I spend my money on would have to be the important people in my life, my partner especially. I’m one of those people that love to spoil, and surprise those around me (despite the bank account) which usually lands me in a little bit of financial stress.. Haha.
...after all, classic pieces are timeless, not trendy.
I recently organised and brought my partners parents over from New Zealand to surprise him for his birthday (they hadn’t been over in the 6 years he’s lived here.)
I never had much interest in perfumes… That was until Alexander McQueen launched ‘My Queen’. Hooked instantly, I vowed that this would be my scent from here on in. That was until the line was discontinued! It got hard to find and the prices rose. When I found stock I bought it all.
I can’t help myself when it comes to splurging on people, it’s just makes me happy to see them happy :)

The ultimate form of marketing, showing you care. Think about yourself, as the consumer. When you go to get your morning coffee and you are greeted by first name and a smile. You are then presented with your coffee of choice without having to even ask for it. How do you feel? Valued as a customer to the business who you have chosen to spend your money with. With the addition of technology, it has become easier than ever to contact with our clients via email, text and online chat. However, these mediums (minus emoticons!) do not always deliver the message with the sincerity or tone that is intended. In contrast, a phone call or face to face chat provides immediate feedback, engagement and nurtures the relationship held. It offers the customer an opportunity to vocalise their experience and your business to get a real time insight into their beliefs and feelings about your products or services. Take the challenge. Review your customer list and identify those who you haven’t seen recently and give them a call. Commit to calling at least one person a day and see what you discover. In addition to making the client
feel valued enough to the business that their absence has been recognised, they will feel they are valued by your business for you to take the time to call them. Why not consider fostering relationships as part of your marketing strategy and general procedures for your business? Include a phone call as part of the post sales process. This will, again, give you an insight in the sales experience for the client, enabling you to shape and improve the experience for the next client. This simple call will also serve to give the client the knowledge that they are valued to your business beyond the sale. This whole exercise will fine tune your service and foster a loyal customer base, who happily engage in word of mouth (or mouse). Get cut through, pick up the phone. Rebecca
mackay marble & granite
After winning a dress up competition at the Whitsunday Tourism Networking Evening, Rebecca Scott’s prize was a vacation to beautiful Long Island. She took a friend away for a girls’ weekend, of bubbles and bliss, and decided to venture along the bush walk to Happy Bay. A cyclone had been through a few months prior, so the track was filled with debris and untouched spider webs. “I walked face first into a massive web and had a spider covering my whole face. I gently backed up and stood on a snake. I was quietly freaking out but didn’t want to scare my mate so, I took a deep breath, picked up a stick and hooped the web to the side so we could pass. “We eventually reached Happy Bay and found it to be a mangrove beach with massive lizards sunning themselves. Six hours later we were back at the resort with our much needed bottle of bubbles,” Rebecca said. Rebecca grew up in New Zealand’s North Island, at the popular beach town of Mount Maunganui. At 19, she moved to the Gold Coast for adventure and was awe-struck by the beautiful beaches. Rebecca had been a keen ocean swimmer and was on the school surfing team, so the Gold Coast lifestyle, which allowed her to swim and surf yearround, appealed immensely. She moved to Airlie Beach seven years ago, after visiting the reef with Cruise Whitsunday on a Whitsunday Marble and Granite Christmas party. Her boyfriend at the time, now husband, was working for Whitsunday Marble and Granite and wanted Rebecca to see if she would love the Whitsundays. “Narelle and Stewy were expecting twins and I was offered a job in the office as I had previously worked in the industry on the Gold Coast. “Whitsunday and Mackay Marble and Granite have been operating for over 10 years, with Stewy having more than 30 years’ experience in the industry. We only ever use ‘A’ grade stone and produce a finished product second to none. I take great pride in offering a superior product to our clients,” Rebecca said. When Mackay Marble and Granite opened its doors, Rebecca moved to Mackay to manage the new store. “My job is quite diverse, I can be required to put my steel-caps on and help unload the truck, put my best smile on and show clients the stone, as well as general office duties.” Having lived the best part of her life in Australia, Rebecca applied for Citizenship, but struck an unusual hurdle.

Brian Forrester Vision Surveys Queensland
With $200 in the bank, Brian Forrester and his wife Linda sailed into Airlie Beach in 1988. Brian rowed ashore, walked to the nearest phone box and had a job within 10 minutes. It was never intentionally a long-term placement but, with a passion for sailing and diving, the Whitsundays have proven to be a hard backyard to say goodbye to. Brian grew up in the Nambucca Valley, where he excelled in maths and engineering sciences. The field of surveying chose him as he was picked up by a local surveyor to carry out his field work. He commented, “I had an absolute ball surveying coastal and hinterland properties in the Nambucca Valley. After five years, my wife and I sailed to Airlie Beach and my surveying career since has been throughout the Whitsundays, Mackay, Townsville and the Bowen Basin.” After the success of running Pioneer Surveys, along with property investment, Brian spent a couple of years sailing around the Pacific on his catamaran, Drumbeat, with his family. On arrival back at Airlie beach, he received a call from his now business partner, David Wilson, who founded Vision Surveys in 2008. Brian later invested into the company to become a co-director, finding that he and David make an excellent team, specialising in different aspects of surveying. “We are about people”. “We love our staff like family and encourage them to be proactive with our clients, as that is what has taken us where we are now. I definitely don’t come across as the ‘Boss Man’. We treat our clients with respect, and listen to what they want to achieve, then bring our team together to find not only ‘a way’, but the best way to achieve it for them. “The same goes for our relationships with our peers, associated consultants and regulatory authorities like Council and the State Government,” Brian said. Brian’s current challenge is working on the redevelopment of Long Island Resort as both surveyor and lead consultant.
Photography by: iconic bride photography
“It is an honour to be trusted with projects like that. The diversity and challenge is what I love so much about my job,” he said. Keeping his catamaran, Drumbeat, in top condition consumes much of Brian’s spare time, giving him the opportunity to immerse himself in the blue yonder of the Whitsundays. “My happy moments are free diving, spear fishing and SCUBA diving the Great Barrier Reef, as the world truly retreats to the back of my mind. No phones out there, just nature at its most extreme! “Sailing in the Vision Surveys Airlie Beach Race Week 2014 was an absolute blast. The whole week was filled with exciting sailing; with staff, clients and dignitaries onboard Drumbeat”. Not to mention a couple of race wins and the after deck parties to celebrate,” Brian said. With a challenging past due to multiple ownership and receivership, Abell Point Marina subsequently developed a reputation as being ‘one to give a miss’. However, as marketing and business development manager, Luke McCaul, explains, the transformations under new owner, Paul Darrouzet, needs to be seen to be believed. “My dad used to say, ‘If you have a vision or a dream, map out a plan, do your research, work hard and it will happen.’ ” “Paul has proven this theory right. He purchased an underutilized, rundown facility and has transformed it into the ultimate destination to stay, play and explore the Whitsundays from,” Luke said. Luke previously held a position with Tourism and Events Queensland, specialising in the Whitsundays and Mackay region. When he discovered that Abell Point Marina would be under new ownership in early 2013, he pursued the opportunity to diverse into a different industry, while utilising his expertise in tourism and marketing. “You can’t beat waking up and going to work located at the gateway to the Whitsundays. The location is spectacular and the position brings ever-changing excitement with the constant transformations and development. “Paul Darrouzet’s vision of transforming Abell Point into a worldclass destination has become a reality and, for everyone involved it is an exhilarating journey,” Luke said. Growing up in Brisbane, Luke had a passion for the water and would spend as much time as he could on the coast, surfing, swimming, snorkeling and camping. The move to the Whitsundays has further fuelled his passion for the outdoors. “I play AFL for the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, but exploring the Whitsunday Islands has been my keen obsession since I arrived.
“I thrive on finding untouched bays, beaches or inlets that would be good to stopover for the night, roll the swag out and enjoy a few sundowners with my girlfriend Samy,” he said. If he were to be reincarnated as an animal, Luke would like to be a lion or an eagle. However, while he still has his feet firmly planted in this life, he does a pretty good Flipper the dolphin impression. Travel, family and friends are Luke’s passions in life and, when surrounded by all three, he is in his element. He said, “Overseas travel takes you to a world of the unknown; where culture, historical buildings, language and food are exciting to become immersed in.” If you haven’t discovered the new Abell Point Marina, take the time to see why it is being labelled as the ultimate gateway to the Whitsunday Islands.

Melissa Green
Bank of Queensland,
mackay city
Never pass up the opportunity to follow your dream because you are afraid you might fail.
Owner Manager of Mackay City’s Bank of Queensland, Melissa Green, is an inspirational example of how to grab hold of the right opportunity when it presents itself. Being six months pregnant with her second child, in the process of selling their family home and building their new home, are all valid excuses as to why investing in her own business would be too much to take on. Not to mention the great financial and personal risks. But instead of worrying about all the “What ifs” Melissa concentrated on the reasons she should say yes, and rolled the dice. Melissa started with the Bank of Queensland (BOQ) when she finished school. Starting in a cheque delivery role, Melissa progressed to branch manager within nine years, a position she has now held for the past 11 years. When the opportunity presented itself to purchase the Mackay City franchise of BOQ, she knew that, despite the challenges she was already facing in life, it was an opportunity too good to pass up. “I knew that it was now or never and I didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity. I reasoned that it was better to take the chance while I was in my thirties, given that I still had many years to financially recover if the risk didn’t pay off,” Melissa said. The industry average for a bank manager in their position is only 18 months. Melissa has been with the BOQ for more than 20 years and is happy that her team are able to offer a personalised and proactive banking solution to Mackay locals. “Our clients love that we remember them, and can pick up from the last conversation we had with them. We love the progression from helping someone finance the purchase of their first car then first home, to an investment property, to opening bank accounts for their children. It goes full circle.” “We have a local telephone number, we return calls from here in the branch, not from an overseas call centre, and we have the ability to give prompt decisions and straightforward options for our clients to consider,” Melissa said. As a working mum, Melissa is grateful that her husband Jason takes on a large share of the household duties, including running the kids around after school, despite also working part time in their business. “Work life balance is important. We always take the time to sit down and have a meal together as a family and just reconnect after a busy day. I always put the kids to bed and read them a story or talk to them about the things that they are dealing with on a day-to-day basis,” she said. If this is on your wish list, the first step is to envisage it.
Rene Descartes, the French mathematician and philosopher, is famous for his quote: “I think; therefore I am.” The rugby player with the job of kicking the winning goal pauses and envisages the ball soaring over the bar. The golfer lining up the winning putt on the last hole envisages the ball rolling into the cup. YOU, the investor must have a vision of what you want to achieve. History has proven that most achievers choose to have big dreams and then direct their thoughts and energy accordingly. Sometimes they might have had doubts, might have thought of giving in, but in the end stayed with their dream. Henry Ford envisioned a world where the horse and buggy would be replaced by mechanical transporters known as cars and made it happen. Gandhi had the outrageous dream that he could gain India’s independence without violence and achieved it.
Are you thinking BIG enough?
Does dreaming big ensure success? Of course not. As the Persian proverb goes “Not everyone who chased the zebra caught it, but he who caught it, chased after it”.

AS SEEN ON THE BLOCK property
Market projection 2015 It’s no secret that the property market was tough in 2014 for those in Mackay. As reported by the Real Estate institute of Queensland, there are more than 1,200 vacant rental properties advertised online, giving the greater region of Mackay the highest property vacancy rate in Queensland. Five years ago, investment skyrocketed as people looked to cash in on a surging mining industry, where people flocked to the region in search of wages well above state average. Property investors hoped to take a large slice of the pie by charging high rental amounts. However, it was inevitable that this market would drop and stabilize. Currently, there are still more people leaving Mackay than moving to Mackay, which will keep vacancy rates high, rental prices will continue to be low as investors fight for occupancy and house sales will remain slow in the following few months.
Interest rates are the lowest they have been in decades, prompting more people to consider the purchase of property, which will spark a small amount of life back into the industry. If proposed mining projects go ahead in the Galilee Basin, supporting infrastructure projects would see a return of workers back to Mackay to service the development of these projects. This would return a demand for housing and the marketplace would naturally adjust and improve. The property market is heavily dependent on employment opportunities increasing in the region in the next 12 months to spark movement back into the marketplace.
Despite current circumstances, there are signs that the property market is stabilizing. The median selling price in Mackay has risen from $383,000 ,in April 2014, to $405,000, in January 2015. The market is still exceptional for a first home buyer to enter the market. However, the upward trend in value is promising for those hoping to gain back some of what was initially invested.
Why you should use an agency to buy and sell property? Convenience
Buying or selling, enlisting the help of an agent will make the process easier for you. If you are buying, an agent can short list a number of properties which meet your criteria and organise appointments for you to view the listings, saving you a lot of time and telephone tag.
Photos courtesy of Gemini Homes
If you are selling, an agent does a lot of work on your behalf. From marketing your property in a cost-effective manner to soliciting calls from prospective buyers, to organising open homes and arranging appointments. There is a lot of work that happens behind the scenes when selling a home.
Paperwork and legalities
An experienced real estate agent handles contracts and legislation relating to the sale of a property on a regular basis, ensuring all the legal mumbo jumbo is translated for you to understand. When it comes to the largest asset you are likely to own in your lifetime, it makes sense to let a professional handle the contracts.

Have you ever been put in the position where you have been made to negotiate for a sale? How did it make you feel? A little uncomfortable? You’re not alone. Those of us who don’t work in sales for a living can find negotiation confronting and awkward. An agent is experienced with negotiation and getting the best price for his or her vendors.

Local sales record. Ask your agent what properties they have sold in the past 12 months. Pay close attention to the types of homes they have sold and make sure it is comparable to yours with similar features and in a similar location. After comparing a few agents, you will soon discover who has been the most successful at selling homes similar to yours.
three
What selling price do you think I can achieve? Once your prospective agent has given you a figure they believe they can achieve for your property, ask them what they are basing that figure on. Don’t automatically jump to the one who promises the highest figure, as it can quite possibly be completely unrealistic. A realistic sale price should be based on similar property sales from your area. Make sure your prospective agent knows all the details of your property intimately as every additional feature can add to the selling power of your home.
four
References. A reference speaks a thousand words! A great agent will happily provide you with a list of references from happy clients. Find out from these clients what they enjoyed about the selling process, and also what things they feel the agent could have done better, so you can address any concerns with the agent early.
de-personalise and de-clutter
Ask your agent how long they have been an agent for, how long have they been an agent in your area for and what they can do specifically for your property to ensure it stands out from others on the market in your area.
sapce and light
You need an agent who is experienced in your area, has been successful in sales in your area and who is also motivated and enthusiastic about getting you the best deal.

top 5 tips to get ready to sell tip one
Ensure a positive feature of your home is on display with a first impression. Whether it’s a new fence, a stunning garden or a grand front door. Remove yard clutter, weed your gardens, trim trees and hedges that require trimming and look after any maintenance issues such as a rusted drain pipe or chipped paint.
tip two
It goes without saying, but put your home’s “best face” forward. Clean the inside of your home from top to bottom, and then clean it all over again. Ensure it smells nice but don’t go overboard with a pungent air freshener. Fresh flowers and a subtle deodoriser in every room will make a fantastic first impression. If it is a hot, sticky day then run your air conditioners to give the home a feeling of being dry, fresh and comfortable.
driveway clear of vehicles so potential buyers have the opportunity to park if the street is busy.
tip four
Two things that every prospective homeowner is searching for, spaciousness and natural light. Consult an interior design expert on how to maximise space and light in your exterior, whether it be through a refreshed paint job, new window fittings, or the addition of some mirrors.
tip five
While you may think your children’s artwork on the wall looks super cute, prospective buyers won’t want their attention drawn to mess. Interior styling should be crisp, clean and less is most certainly more. The buyer wants to see a blank canvas so they can envision what the home would look like once they move in.

Dare to be Different Be Brave and step out in your own Style ‘There is more than one way to skin a cat’. The same applies when planning your new home. While you may drive around and see the same style of buildings lining the street that you have just purchased a block on, that doesn’t mean you have to conform. Be brave and step out in your own style. Slab on ground, block rendered and a tin roof are the norm in Mackay…but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact it shouldn’t be that way. A good building designer can advise you on different construction methods and materials to create a unique and special home that reflects your style and personality and is responsive to your block of land. When we conform to the norm it results in streetscapes that in years to come will reflect a common theme and trend. These become the tell-tale signs of the street’s age. When you stroll down an older street, the house that stands out is most often the one that is a little bit different and has some architectural merit. These houses are usually more sought-after and fetch a better sale price as well. Want to ensure that your street holds its value? Then raise the design bar, more than likely others will follow. Gone are the days when there were only a few choices in construction methods and materials. Nowadays, there are a myriad of products out there. Make sure you explore them all to find something that suits you. Remember you will be the one living in your home, so it should suit you and your family not the neighbours. Engage a good building designer and find a builder that is willing to think outside the square to help you create a space that is right for you! While many businesses talk about where they have come from, we tell you who we are now, and look toward where we want to be in the future. Owner, Ben Chick, describes how his passion for Mackay has translated into a successful business, thriving in a market that other agencies have referred to as slow and difficult. “When I speak to people in Brisbane and other capitals, they are under this assumption that things are a slower pace here in Mackay and central Queensland. When they come to visit me they can see that’s clearly not the case. “The other thing they notice when they come here is how much we have in our immediate surrounds. When you combine those two elements, I have never really wanted to leave. “I have always been one to create activity. When I was building my career in media, and then when I started in real estate, I actively searched for opportunity. Even now, there is opportunity in Mackay, if you’re willing to look for it. “When entering property in 2009, I was advised to look for a more stable career. I looked at the opportunity to learn and grow and I discovered the importance of surrounding myself with positive people. “Even as I decided to open a new business, I was still being advised that the impact to other businesses would hit the property market hard. I chose to ignore them, because it doesn’t matter what part of the economic cycle we are currently in, people still want excellent service. This I can deliver. “Our team have a wealth of experience in property and in Mackay. The difference we have is that we take immense pride in our work, and are passionate and positive about Mackay’s future. “Mackay is my home. ASK YOUR SAVVY REAL ESTATE AGENT:
If you are preparing to sell your home is it better to sell via Auction or Private Sale?

Here is a list of Pro’s and Con’s: Selling via Private Treaty
This is where you set the price you would like your property to sell for and your real estate agent negotiates individually with prospective buyers to achieve a sale price.
P riv

PROS:
Greater flexibility for negotiation, flexibility regarding the length of time your home is listed for sale Cost saving on the marketing and promotional of an auction campaign
vs
ion
Sale
?
CONS:
It may take longer to sell your home compared with an auction campaign You might need to make your home available longer for inspections and open homes If you or the agent mid price the market and price it above the market value your property might sit on the market longer and generates little interest
Selling via Auction
At an Auction prospective buyers gather to bid on your property. The highest bidder at the end of the auction becomes the successful buyer provided the bid matches or exceeds the reserve price.
PROS:
An auction offers the opportunity for the vendors to sell their property prior to auction, or on the day of the auction or in the event the property in passed in, directly after the auction You have the ability to set a reserve price and settlement date to suit you The auction process creates a sense of urgency; buyers have a definite time frame in which they must act The auction process encourages competitive bidding which means there is no price barrier. Once the property is deemed SOLD a 10% deposit is paid, with no cooling off period
Cons
An auction may have a more expensive advertising campaign than private sale. If the property does not sell, the vendor is still responsible for paying advertising costs and auctioneer. You may need to make a quick decision to reduce your reserve price during the high pressure environment of an auction in order to make the sale. The auction process may make sellers extremely nervous.

When we take time out from the Sunshine Coast it is usually to visit friends overseas. I enjoy travelling, especially shopping in New York but I like coming home even more.
“
Victoria conquers the Sunshine Coast Whitsunday’s property people often ask ‘where are they now’ and one of the most frequent names to come up in conversation is Victoria Dent. We discovered this former Whitsunday property specialist and self confessed party girl living the dream on the Sunshine Coast.
Victoria says the local environment adds to the lifestyle. “I love walking my Spoodles, Archie and Cooper, along the beach. The beaches here are among the cleanest and least populated in Queensland. I can stroll for miles without seeing a soul. Sometimes we visit the surfing beaches and watch the early morning surfers and swimmers. Other times we take an evening stroll and watch the trawlers come in.”
Almost 15 years after she sold resorts and mansions in Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, Victoria is still making her mark on the real estate industry. Victoria says she now has the best of both worlds.
“The Sunshine Coast is a foodies’ destination. Apart from fresh local fish, there is an endless supply of quality farm produce and dozens of boutique wineries producing award winning products. There are plenty of lovely restaurants. Seasons in Noosa is one of our regular haunts, but I still enjoy entertaining at home. I am still a bit of a party girl at heart.
“I have created a very pleasant niche for myself on the Sunshine Coast,” she says. “I live in the stunning beachside township of Peregian Beach, the lifestyle is similar to the Whitsundays. It’s laid back with a hint of sophistication. “I now work with Living Gems, an international award winning over 50s’ residential resort company. Living Gems is based on the Gold Coast and operates several resorts throughout south east Queensland. “I have been with Living Gems for a little more than two years. Until recently, I was sales manager at Sunstone Gardens at Maleny, near the Glasshouse Mountains region. I am now sales manager at the recently launched Crystal by Living Gems Resort at Pacific Paradise near Maroochydore,” she says. Before joining Living Gems, Victoria sold golf course villas at the Hyatt Regency in Coolum. She says eight years with Hyatt was a great introduction to the Sunshine Coast. “I got to know most of the local business fraternity and, of course, the keen golfers. “Golf is part of the way of life on the Sunshine Coast. There are plenty of excellent courses. I enjoy a round or two on weekends. It’s a great way to relax. My favourite course is Twin Waters. It’s just across the road from Crystal by Living Gems, so it’s easy to fit in nine holes after work on summer evenings,” she says.
“When we take time out from the Sunshine Coast, it is usually to visit friends overseas. I enjoy travelling, especially shopping in New York, but I like coming home even more. “It’s easy to see why the Sunshine Coast is a popular tourist destination and why it attracts so many younger retirees from all over Australia and around the world. The climate is perfect, the beaches are beautiful and the region has everything from lush green national parks to breathtaking mountains. “We can shop in charming seaside villages, head to stylish Noosa or watch the surfers at Alexandra Headlands. Lots of people make the daily commute to Brisbane to work – it takes about an hour – but I enjoy working locally. “Crystal by Living Gems is the perfect environment. The boutique resort has five star sports and entertainment facilities. It isn’t built yet and I have already sold 10 homes off the plan. There will be around 125 homes when the resort is complete. “I have already bumped into a few people from the Whitsundays who are looking for affordable homes with all the luxuries. Crystal by Living Gems will become a community of active over 50s who know how to enjoy life,” Victoria says. www.corelife.com.au 39

a lot of tuning or alteration. It’s all-wheel-drive, turbo-charged with full competition suspension and brakes.”
Property developer, Clinton Arentz, knows about the grit and determination it takes to succeed.
How do you balance being in business with your passion for racing? A. “My passion for my business and for Mackay always comes first.
He took the outright victory in the first round of the 2015 Australian Tarmac Rally Championship in his Mitsubishi Evo X, as well as securing the win in the Showroom 4WD class.
Racing is great fun and I wish I could do more of it, but my heart and mind are focused on my business and the economic progress of Mackay.
But it is his faith in the future of Mackay as an economic powerhouse which has given the business community a positive outlook heading into the future.
“Our Evo Business Centre, on Maggiolo Drive in Paget, is strategically aligned to provide local business owners with a modern and well positioned premises to enhance their own business.
We put Clinton in the Hot Seat to find out what gets his blood pumping.
“Further, we are in the process of developing a high intensity general industry subdivision adjacent to Evo Business Centre. As a business focused on the future, this development will be well positioned to cater to the needs of a growing business community once the economic tide turns once again. There will be the demand for modern business developments in the next few years, which is why we have taken this opportunity now to get the ball rolling early.
What led you into the sport of motor racing? A. “My father and grandfather both raced, so I’m a third generation
driver. My father raced alongside some of the greats in the 60’s and 70’s and has always been a great source of motivation and advice in my own racing. “My mother even got in on the action and competed at various events, so it’s very much in the blood. It was inevitable that I would have a crack at it too.”
Tell us about the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship and about your car. A. “The Australian Tarmac Rally Championship consists of four
championship events based in the mountain ranges of Victoria. The races are held in the summer, two races at the start of the year and then two races at the end of the year, across winding mountain roads. The racing is challenging and competitive, but also a lot of fun. “My Mitsibishi Evo X is a great car, wonderfully fast without needing
You chose to move your business, Winston Group, from Brisbane to Mackay. What is it about Mackay that gives you confidence about its economic future? A. “Mackay has all the assets in place to make it a great place to live
and work. More people are discovering that Mackay is much more than mining. While mining is important to the economy, Mackay is very dynamic in its own right. The diversity here for Mackay to flourish is already in place. The airport, harbour, tourism opportunities as well as intelligent and hard-working business people. “I see great things for Mackay’s future, which is why I have backed my confidence with the decision to base my business here.”

Before you dive into the property market, there are a few questions you should ask yourself: Have you saved enough?
The first requirement in buying a home is saving up a deposit of at least 5% of the price. Knowing you can budget your cash to save a deposit is a good sign you’ll be able to cope with the mortgage repayments.
Do you have a stable income?
The purchase price on a property is not the overall cost of buying a home. A steady income is required, should interest rates rise or for home and contents insurance or house repairs.
Are you ready to settle down?
Individuals with itchy feet may want to steer clear of buying a home. Want to travel the world? Reselling a home can be challenging and costly. If you do have to unexpectedly pack up and leave, consider holding onto the property as an investment.
Have you done your research?
Before jumping in, it’s worth doing your research. Is now the best time to buy? Take into account the growth potential of the suburb and distance to friends, family and place of work. Check out the BOQ Property App and download full RP Data report.
Have you spoken to your bank?
Buying a new home is arguably the biggest financial commitment you will ever make. Speak to an expert regarding your personal finance before you take the leap. At BOQ Mackay City, we are able to discuss your goals and point you in the right direction.

Inland Adventure Beyond the winding hills of the Eton Range, there is a rugged hinterland beckoning to be explored. More than just mining, the Isaac region holds many gems worth uncovering.
Nebo
feature
Yee-haw, ride ‘em cowboy! Nebo is a true-blue Aussie country town, famous for cattle beef farms and genuine country hospitality. One of the best places to experience the character and heritage of Nebo is at its heritage-listed pub, built in 1862. Enjoy Aussie grub and a pint of golden ale and join the locals in a yarn. Overlooking Nebo Creek, it’s as character-filled today as it was 100 years ago. The abandoned mining town of Mt Britton is worth a look, where only remnants of this once bustling gold mining town remain. Markers show where the streets once were, while historic photographs and abandoned gold mining machinery give you a glimpse into what the town was like in the 1880s. The Nebo Museum contains relics and interesting information on the early European settlers in the Nebo region, as well as cultural heritage of the indigenous history of the land.
Dysart and Moranbah
The Peak Downs Highway is dotted with coal mines, both open cut and underground, along its length and breadth. One of the best places to get an idea of the scale of a working coal mine is at the Peak Downs Mine, in-between the Peak Downs Highway and the mining town of Dysart. At one point the road travels in-between two of the large mine pits, giving views into the deep pits where you can see drag lines and dump trucks operating. The mining town of Dysart contains everything you need to refuel and recharge, including multiple parks, a public swimming pool, two grocery supermarkets, restaurants and accommodation. The belly dump truck and coal wagon greets you as you arrive at the town, monuments in recognition of the coal and rail industry, celebrating Dysart’s 25th anniversary in 1998. The Mt Orange Copper Smelter chimney is a 54ft high stack and firebox, with a plaque explaining the history of the smelter during early copper mining days. It was erected in 1879 and closed in 1910. If you enjoy fishing or dam swimming, the drive to Bundoora Dam is worth the trip. The sandy-edge dam enjoys clear water, popular for swimming, and is stocked with saratoga, golden perch, eel-tailed catfish, sleepy cod, spangled perch and redclaw crayfish. The drive from Dysart to Clermont through Peak Range National Park is what inland adventures are all about. Rugged and isolated, teeming with natural beauty. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Lord’s Table rest area where you will be treated to beautiful views of the flat-topped peak of Lord’s Table. Wild emus and kangaroos are regularly spotted along this road.
Clermont
The first town to be settled inland in tropical North Queensland, Clermont is a historical gem. It first found prosperity in 1861 with the discovery of gold and ever since the town has capitalised on a rich history of precious metals, coal and agriculture. The town has also seen its fair share of tragedy. To get an understanding of the balance between prosperity and devastation, visit the Clermont Historical Centre, with more than 8,000 relics depicting the history of Clermont. Then visit the memorial that marks the height of the 1916 flood on the corner of Capricorn and Drummond Streets. Across the road you can also find the famous ‘piano in the tree’, a replica of an actual piano found in that tree after the flood. Remarkably, it was one of three pianos found in treetops after the 1916 flood. Centenary Park is a beautiful heart of Clermont, with Hoods Lagoon at its centre and a boardwalk providing an insightful look into Clermont’s history with a range of sculptures and memorials. The abandoned copper mining area of Copperfield is another interesting area for history buffs. It was the site of Queensland’s first copper mine. All that remains is one brick chimney and a general store, which closed in 1975. Try your luck in striking it rich by purchasing a fossicking license and hiring a gold detector to search for gold in Clermont or, if you’d rather be holding a fishing rod, visit Theresa Creek Dam to reel in barramundi, golden perch, eel-tailed catfish, sleepy cod, silver perch and bony bream, as well as redclaw crayfish. Visit the sharp-pointed and aptly named Wolfang Peak, a prominent volcanic plug on the outskirts of Clermont, accessed from the Peak Downs Highway. For experienced climbers, the summit can be reached in under an hour, the walk not well established but marked with white ribbons.

Mayor Anne Baker Starsign Capricorn Favourite Colour Red Favourite Number 11 Favourite Food Mexican Biggest pet peeve Pet owners who neglect their animals
From sandy white beaches and sparkling shorelines through a lush hinterland to a ruggedly beautiful outback, the Isaac Region covers a land mass greater than the size of the state of Tasmania. The Isaac region is also one of the largest mineral-based local government regions in Queensland, playing a massive role in the wealth and economy of the greater Mackay Region as well as the state of Queensland. At the helm of the Isaac Regional Council is Mayor Anne Baker, who with her husband Frank, has lived in Moranbah for more than 16 years. Core Life Magazine caught up with Mayor Baker to learn more about the Isaac’s inspirational Mayor and what the council have planned for the future of the mining region. Q: What was the turning point in your life that made you decide to run for mayor? A: My grandfather was very keen on politics, so perhaps I inherited his interest. While I was appointed as a Councillor I figured, if you’re on the ship you may as well be the captain. That’s when I stepped forward to lead the region as mayor. Q: Can you give us an insight into what daily life is like as mayor?
time. Golf is perhaps my favourite activity. Q: What do the council have planned for the Isaac Region in the future? A: Council is preparing to cast our 20 year vision for the region. We’ve considered expanding industries like tourism and how to build sustainable communities to deliver a bright future. Q: What do you love about living in Moranbah? A: I’ve been in Moranbah for 16 years now. I love this region’s diversity – the landscape, the business activity and opportunities, the people and the unique communities. I feel comfortable here. It’s a wonderful place to live. Q: For people travelling to the Isaac Region, what would you recommend they experience while here? A: There are incredible wetlands at St Lawrence and an unspoilt coastline going north to Carmila. Driving inland, you take in farming districts and coalfields. Try your hand at striking gold in Clermont or visit the magnificent Theresa Creek Dam for a relaxing day out. I’d recommend capping off your journey at the famous Nebo Hotel.
A: In this role, no day is the same. It’s very exciting and rewarding, albeit challenging. I’m thinking of the day ahead as soon as I wake up. A priority of mine is to engage closely and as frequently as possible with people in our communities as well as working and sharing ideas with our neighbouring councils. At the same time, I’m extremely mindful that I’m here to represent the people – to help bring about the changes they seek. Q: What can we find you doing on the weekend? A: I like to keep physically active by walking, going to the gym, playing golf or swimming. I also like to relax with a good book if I can find the www.corelife.com.au 51

Recent evidence points to some very real benefits for making dietary changes in order to improve mental health and behaviour outcomes. It’s coined the food-mood connection.

PRECISE CORPORATION Ashleigh Rowe
FROM SELF-CONFESSED PARTY-BOY TO PROUD FATHER, ASHLEIGH ROWE HAS EXPERIENCED EXTREME HIGHS AND LOWS IN BOTH LOVE AND LIFE, BUT KNOWS HE NOW IS PRECISELY WHERE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE.
Most business owners wouldn’t consider the current economic downturn in the Mackay region to be a blessing, but the hard times that Ashleigh has recently faced have made him a stronger businessman. 15 years ago, Ashleigh funded his own business, Precise Maintenance, at just 25 years of age. From living in a housing commission home with his mother in Gladstone, Ashleigh had an appreciation for working hard to earn every dollar. He started his business at just the right time. Precise Maintenance quickly expanded to become Precise Corporation and, at the peak of the labour hire boom, Ashleigh’s business was turning over more than $2 million per month. “I initially started Precise with the hope one day I would be able to buy both my parents a house each to give them security. They never had money to give me but they gave me a fantastic upbringing”. “Unfortunately, all the money went to my head. I had so much I didn’t know what to do with it. I did all the wrong things. I was young, I partied hard, bought all the flash toys and lost touch with reality”. “I had lost a sense of who I was and it was a feeling I didn’t like,” Ashleigh said. The current economic downturn started to hurt his business, but, at the beginning, he didn’t recognise or didn’t want to admit that he would need to change how the business operated.
“I had to learn to think with my head and not my heart”. “I learnt to ‘get skinny’ with operations, and not be too proud to change, downsize, relocate and do all that was necessary to ensure we stayed in business.” A few years ago, Ashleigh’s life had hit rock-bottom. He was in an unhappy relationship, suffering from depression and nothing seemed to be going his way. While practicing motorcross at home he had a crash which snapped his femur and destroyed his shoulder. As fate would have it, the surgeon recommended physiotherapy, and this is how he met his fiancé, Kaleigh. “I don’t know why I was immediately attracted to Kaleigh, whether it was her looks, her professionalism or how generally caring she is but, believe me, I booked in for a lot of physio,” Ashleigh said.
“I desperately wanted to propose but had no idea how to do it, where to do it and I had no ring”.

Last year, Ashleigh and Kaleigh travelled to Las Vegas to celebrate Ashleigh’s 40th birthday with friends. After thousands of miles taking in the sights of America, they ended up back in Las Vegas for their final evening. “I desperately wanted to propose but had no idea how to do it, where to do it and I had no ring”.
feature “Most days Kaleigh brings Ariella to work and we have converted our office into a mini day care which some of my friends find amusing since I used to be a bit of a party boy,”
“As the sun was going down, I managed to sneak off and found the most beautiful ring that just happened to resemble the Eiffel Tower, where we already had booked dinner. At the top of the Eiffel Tower overlooking the Bellagio Fountains, I got down on one knee and proposed,” Ashleigh said. The couple have just welcomed into the world a baby daughter, Ariella, and admit that work life balance can be a struggle. “From having to close our Nebo workshop, when Kaleigh was heavily pregnant to long days and nights relocating their Mackay workshop to City Gates. It has been tough at times”. “Fortunately for me, Kaleigh is by far the most devoted new mother I know of and quite simply makes Ariella her number one priority”. “Most days, Kaleigh brings Ariella to work and we have converted our office into a mini day care which some of my friends find amusing since I used to be a bit of a party boy,” Ashleigh said. The move of Precise Corporation to City Gates has allowed the business to stabilize financially, while secure a better geographical location. “Our workshop runs more efficiently with the convenience of being located where the Bruce and Peak Downs Highways intersect”. “We still provide all the same critical services, such as all car and truck servicing and repairs on new and used vehicles without affecting warranty”. “We have scan tools to check and clear fault lights and codes, we perform mine inspections, road worthy certificates for cars, trucks and trailers, lease vehicle servicing and repairs and all car and truck brake testing to the new coal mine standard”. “Even though we have a strong connection to the mines, we do a lot of generic servicing and repairs on privately owned vehicles in town,” Ashleigh said. With the new bundle of joy in their lives, Kaleigh is more than relieved that Ashleigh is giving up his passion for Supermoto racing. Most weekends I spend working on the farm, but I have a passion for most forms of motorsport. I enjoy flying planes and helicopters, but my passion has always been bikes and, more so the last couple of years, Supermoto. I became a Queensland and Australian champion in the S4 class last year, but now I’d like to move into desert racing and rally.
“We still provide all the same critical services, such as all car and truck servicing and repairs on new and used vehicles without affecting warranty”
“The smile on Kaleigh’s face when I told her I was giving the bikes away and moving to a sport with a roll cage, pretty much sealed the deal.”

for true Aussie hospitality.
How about a vast coastline of unspoilt beaches, a dugong sanctuary and firefly beach walks?
To explore one of the most ruggedly natural national parks on the Queensland Coast, turn off the Bruce Highway at Ilbilbie and head for Cape Palmerston National Park.
The Isaac Region encompasses a large stretch of coastal communities, from Koumala, south of Sarina, all the way down to the historical township of St Lawrence. This stretch of heavenly coastline is known as the Serenity Coast, with Cape Palmerston National Park at its heart.
The township of Greenhill, on the coast, has two beaches which are easily accessible by car. However, to venture into the Cape Palmerston National Park it is recommended to travel in a 4WD and take supplies to be self-sufficient if you’re planning to camp overnight.
To fully appreciate the awe-inspiring beauty of the Isaac coastline, it’s recommended that you take a long weekend. After all, it is the carefree nature of the communities which lends its name toward Serenity.
Allow an hour to reach the Windmill Bay camping area, where open euycalypt woodland makes way for dense rainforest and mangrove wetlands rich in native flora and fauna. Emerge through the canopy to see golden sand dunes fringe sparkling beaches, divided by rugged headlands.
Koumala is a classic country township, with the local pub at its heart. The township was named after a local sugar property dating back to 1884. The name itself derived from Fijian meaning a type of sweet potato, or ‘Kumara’ as it’s called in New Zealand. The Koumala Hotel is a notable place for a stop, with a large crocodile on the hotel’s façade. With great grub and friendly banter, you’ll get a taste
Explore the coastline for Aboriginal shell middens to discover how the original inhabitants of the land lived on the coast. Search for the hidden windmill in the bush and then follow the walk to the cape itself, where breathtaking views across the Northumberland Islands National Park can be seen from the clifftops.

bush turkeys keep campers entertained at sunset. It is also home to great crabbing.
The Cape Creek campsite overlooking Ince Bay is a popular fishing spot with anglers. Bream, flathead and cod are abundant in this area, with anglers also reeling in slender tomhead’s, mangrove jacks and queenfish. Drop a tinny in the water to catch reef fish or mackerel.
Indulge in homemade ice cream at Flaggy Rock, a popular stop amongst picturesque gardens, and continue the coastal drive to Clairview, a relaxed beachside village.
After you depart Cape Palmerston National Park, take the opportunity to take your 4WD to Yarrawonga and Notch Point Reserve, one of the best fishing spots on the Central Queensland Coast. The scenery is stunning and often dolphins can be spotted from the shore. The evening nature walk from Cape Palmerston Holiday Park to the beach offers the opportunity to see glimpses of the beautiful fireflies that inhabit the surrounding area, a truly magical experience. Further down the coast, Carmila Creek is the ideal location to launch a boat to explore the outer islands or drop a quiet line. The long stretch of golden sand at Carmila is a serene place to watch the sun rise, while
Enjoy a seaside picnic on Colonial Drive at Blue Rocks, or take the family for a barbecue using community facilities at Wilson’s Park. The water adjacent to Clairview is a protected dugong sanctuary and it is possible to catch a glimpse of the unusual mammal from the beach. It is also a great location to camp next to the ocean and listen to the calls of migrating whales as they pass during migrating season. St Lawrence is one of the oldest towns on the Queensland Coast with many historical buildings and points of interest to discover. The surrounding creeks and inlets also provide excellent fishing and crabbing opportunities. The Serenity Coast has many beaches, coves and creeks to be discovered. All part of a naturally beautiful, barely touched stretch of the Isaac region. Dare to discover your own special place in serenity.

Love Central Highlands Love is in the air in the Central Highlands, as word gets out that the region is a great place to visit, live and invest.
The Central Highlands community, led by its Regional Council (CHRC) and Development Corporation (CHDC), is currently working hard to promote itself to the rest of the world. At the heart of it sits a colourful, fun and contemporary logo and slogan that succinctly sums up the affection locals, visitors and investors hold for the region. The Love Central Highlands brand was designed in 2012 but has been particularly embraced recently to build the region’s reputation as a diverse place with much to offer. YOU’RE WELCOME CHDC’s Tourism Development Officer, Peter Grigg, is leading the charge. The passionate ambassador proudly sports a car plastered with the Love Central Highlands logos as he travels far and wide to raise the region’s profile. “The car is a real conversation starter so it’s another opportunity for me to tell people why the Central Highlands is a great place to visit,” Mr Grigg says. It’s a combination of factors that make people fall in love with the region. “We offer so many unique experiences, like exploring Carnarvon Gorge, redclaw fishing at Lake Maraboon and digging for your fortune in the Sapphire Gemfields,” Mr Grigg says. “Our mild winter is a huge selling point for southerners and our laidback, Aussie lifestyle’s a big hit with international tourists.” Mr Grigg says the people of the Central Highlands also make a great impression. “When visitors come to town, they don’t just stay at a motel. They fuel up the car, get prescriptions filled and drop into the supermarket for a few essentials. People round here know that tourism is everyone’s business, so they go out of their way to make visitors welcome.”
STICK AROUND New residents are also welcomed with open arms. “With its country town roots, the Central Highlands has always been known for its friendliness and hospitality. You’ll run into a mate down the street and they’re happy to stop for a chat,” Mayor Peter Maguire says. “Our laidback lifestyle, great schools and access to healthcare facilities are also why we attract many young families.” New arrivals are also pleasantly surprised by the number and range of community events. Among the biggest is the annual Central Highlands Multicultural Festival, which is on Saturday, 22 August. It attracted 7000 people last year and celebrates the region’s cultural diversity. “It’s these types of events that really help people fall in love with the region and never want to leave, even if they had only planned to stay a few years!” Councillor Maguire says. An added attraction is affordable housing. “Council has worked hard to address the region’s housing shortage. Prices have now come down and that puts home ownership within reach of people who might have been able to only dream about it a few years ago.” OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS Coal mining is currently taking a backseat to other exciting opportunities, such as in agriculture. “A recent feasibility study has triggered efforts to attract a meat processing plant to Emerald,” CHDC General Manager, Sandra Hobbs, says. Despite challenges, beef and cotton continue to thrive, with producers fielding increasing interest from global investors.

feature Tourism is also one to watch. It’s identified as a growth area for the Central Highlands, fuelled by Australia’s flourishing grey nomad market. Mr Grigg is leading efforts to promote the rich Sapphire Gemfields and the rugged beauty of the Sandstone Wilderness. “These are the two biggest jewels in our crown and, in many ways, they’re largely undiscovered,” he explains. “We want them to become bucket-list items and we even think Sandstone has the potential to rival WA’s iconic Kimberley.” While some businesses have taken a hit from the coal downturn Ms Hobbs says the 2015 Central Highlands Business Excellence Awards will demonstrate many are still kicking goals. “Times have been tough but they’ve been the trigger for many to review their business plans and re-position themselves to take advantage of new markets and emerging opportunities.” Among the new business ventures is a sapphire mine being established by the world’s leading premium coloured gemstone mining company, Richland Resources to supply gems to the global luxury goods market. Meantime, Sentinel is promising upgrades after recently taking ownership of two of Emerald’s three shopping centres. “Our economy’s strength lies in its diversity and that’s why we continue to receive regular interest from investors all over Australia,” Ms Hobbs says. “They can see the region has a long-term future.” Visit centralhighlands.qld.gov.au or chdc.com.au chdc.com.au centralhighlands.com.au

AFTER
HAIR Jess is a 2nd year apprentice who doesn’t often get the chance to do something nice for herself, so I thought she would be the perfect person to have the opportunity to have a makeover. COLOUR After holding on to the blonde ends with an ombre look for some time, we decided to take the plunge for a deep and rich mahogany colour in the Wella Colour Touch demi permanent range to accentuate Jess’s beautiful hazel eyes all while enhancing her natural skin tone. EXTENSION APPLICATION After we have rinsed, shampooed and lightly conditioned Jess’s natural hair with Hydrate wash and finish, we started the process of blow drying,
MAKE UP 1 Firstly, I applied Mac oil control lotion and smash box primer so I had a good base to work with. I then used a mixture of Mac studio fix colours to get that perfect colour match, followed by Pro long wear concealer.
smoothing and sectioning for the correct placement of our AAA human hair extensions. Jess has very dense hair so we used 60pcs in total to blend with her natural her for a full and glamorous look! STYLING Once the extensions were in, secure and comfortable we used a GHD to create red carpet inspired ‘ribbon like’ curls. As we moved up each vertical section we lightly sprayed Sebastian Trilliant for heat protection and shine, before curling the hair away from Jess’s face. Then finishing each section with a light spray of Sebastian Reshaper hairspray for a strong hold and humidity resisting factors. Through the crown and parting area we shook in some American Crew Boost Powder to assist in backcombing to promote volume and a curvature shape. Finally, we spritzed Sebastian Shine Shaker for a radiating shine for once again a glamorous finish!
Jess’ lips where primed and lined with Mac Pro lip liner and a coral lipstick. I finished by applying makeup finishing spray, to really set this look for longer wear.
I then set this with Mac studio fix powder. To create more structure around her face I used a mineral medium to dark powder, followed by a highlighter to give her a natural glow and narz blush. I wanted to create a thicker and longer shape for her brows so I used my Anastasia brow pallet and highlighted the brow bone. For the eyes I wanted to create a bold look and also open the eyes. I used a highlighter pigment over the base of her eye and a soft brown shadow to create a defined crease. On the apple of the eye I applied champaign shimmer to make the eyes pop, I then used a black pencil on the lash line and smoked it out on the corners to give it more depth. I used a Mac nude pencil on her water line, followed by lashes and mascara.

“I found the Team at Iconic Bride Photography absolutely fabulous. “I felt very comfortable from the first meeting with Norina Jane. Norina’s knowledge regarding the venue and experience as a wedding photographer really made me feel at ease. This also gave me a sense of relief to know I had chosen the right photographer to capture our special day. “Norina really listened, taking onboard what I wanted to achieve out of our wedding photographs. I outlined some important photographs that I really wanted to capture, she then worked toward how we could achieve these, along with her recommendations. “On the day both the men and ladies found Norina to be very professional and on the job. “Corresponding with the team at Iconic Bride Photography was easy. Emails were answered promptly and constant communication made the journey to achieve the perfect album easy.
Tell us about the dress! “I designed my dress, along with the help of the very talented Mathieu Salam, who owns a beautiful bridal shop in Armadale. I had always like the idea of a lace dress and getting married in Queensland’s heat helped me decide on the strapless style.
“The end results speak for themselves. The pictures are breathtaking. I absolutely loved the professionalism in every shot, without missing the humour and natural composure.”
“Mathieu suggested the pearl beading and Swarovski crystals, which definitely caught your eye. The free flowing skirt with its abundant amount of chiffon was simply gorgeous. The end result was magnificent.
Tell us about your pre-wedding activities… “We had a beautiful pre-wedding dinner at Cha Mah Morrocan Restaurant. The morning of the wedding, the men prepared themselves, (scotch in hand), at the Penthouse. While the girls were escorted in a Limo to the Villa to indulge in pampering and a beautiful Champagne breakfast.”
“I still look at my dress to this very day wishing I could relive every moment from my wedding day.”
What was your something old, new, borrowed and blue? “I borrowed my sisters “M” and “E” necklace charms on the day. My sister, also my maid of honour, was hospitalised two days before the wedding. With much heartache and despair she could not attend my wedding, having been airlifted to Mackay Hospital where she remained and watched the ceremony via Face Time. “The “M” and “E” are my sons initials that we gave to her as a gift the year before.”
What was something unique about your wedding? “We absolutely loved the idea of the fireworks that took place over the Coral Sea. Our children were present at the wedding and they thoroughly enjoyed it.” Where did you honeymoon? “We spent three nights at Qualia in the Whitsundays. What a picturesque and secluded place to be. “During this time I also celebrated my birthday. Gary surprised me with a 72ft sailing yacht which he hired for the day. Onboard there was beautifully prepared seafood and champagne. Definitely a day I will never forget.

We don’t just listen‌we hear you. What does a hearing impairment mean to you? Many people believe that Audiology just means a hearing loss - ie that sounds aren’t received as loudly as someone with perfect hearing. However, the inner ear and hearing itself is far more complex than you think, resulting in a large range of conditions which each bring their own individual symptoms and impairments. For example hearing is only a small portion of what the inner ear does and the majority of is actually responsible for your balance and positioning in space. Same with hearing, the inner ear really only picks up the sound and then converts it to an electrical signal and is then sent to brain. The real hearing, listening and processing is actually done by the brain not the ear itself. So just as you can have a problem with the hearing area of your inner ear you can also have pathologies of the balance portion of the inner ear such as severe vertigo or imbalance- both just as debilitating or even more so than hearing loss. Same with the auditory processing of speech, you can have perfectly normal hearing but have a severe inability to process the speech sounds that are been sent up to the auditory processing areas of the brain. Previously if you had issues with the balance or auditory processing areas of the brain you would have to go to Brisbane or Townsville to fully assess what specific areas of the balance or auditory processing the problem is for treatment. Thankfully, now with technological advancements in equipment Clarity Hearing Solutions are proud to be able to bring these assessments and treatment pathways to most areas of QLD including remote and rural 68 www.corelife.com.au
locations from Mt Isa to Charleville, Roma to Emerald, Mackay to Clermont and many more. Besides balance and auditory processing testing and treatment we also bring a lot of other Audiological services that have never previously left the South East Corner of QLD. We now also bring Cochlear Implant and other implantable services, objective testing of new born babies (by measuring the brains response to sound), tinnitus assessment and treatment, and of course the latest and best hearing aid technology available. Hope for Industrial Deafness Being exposed to dangerous levels of noise our working and social lives can catch up and result in a permanent hearing loss, or “industrial deafness”. A new device called a Micro Open-fit hearing aid is now available that solves all the old problems associated with treating industrial deafness. These new devices leave the ear open allowing
you to use your good hearing in the low pitched areas, with the hearing aid only providing assistance to speech sounds in high pitched areas. This means a natural sound, no excessive background noise, and no loud chewing or voice echoes. Now in waterproof and dustproof models!

If I was given $20 as a gift I would bank it, as I want to save up for my future. So, when I am older I can buy a car or house. I get $7 per week pocket money and I save this also, for our family holiday to Kakadu.
I would put it towards my next tennis racquet or pair of shoes. Or possibly just give it to Mum and Dad to thank them for all the sporting equipment they have already bought for me!
Or if an Xbox was $20, I’d spend it on an Xbox.
Miller I would definitely spend it! Probably on something that I want. Maybe on a Nerf gun that’s big enough for four people. Or if an Xbox was $20, I’d spend it on an Xbox.

Home and School: Roles of Parents and Teachers
Mr Mick Martin Head of Junior School Children, and adults, learn in a variety of ways and in many different situations and locations, inclusive of home and school. We learn from a wide cross-section of people; teachers, coaches, tutors, friends, siblings, grandparents and of course parents. The learning and teaching processes encompass many contributors, more than we may imagine, including us as individuals. We contribute to how and what others learn as well. We may reflect on who taught us to ride a bike, write our name, and throw a ball. Many of us have early memories of a parent or a teacher being involved in assisting us to manage and master these skills. Watching our babies and children grow up are the most wonderful and amazing times in life. We want the best for our kids, making sure that they grow up to be strong and healthy, ensuring that we nurture them in the best way possible. It’s definitely every parents’ goal right? As you are watching your children grow and develop, you may think back in wonder of what it was like for your own parents, who have now become grandparents. You may also begin to think of the wonders of life, starting out as something so small but will one day become an adult like yourself. Even though we do our best at times, there are a lot of things that we can’t really control, it’s all those little knocks, bumps and falls, as well as the all traumatic birthing process, that was not only tough for the mother, but the bub too. Think about the baby having to squeeze and twist their body out into the world or at times with a bit of assistance that may place extra pressure on their delicate bodies. These physical stressors may be one of the causes of developmental restrictions for our child, and when there are birth traumas or developmental restrictions, we often find that there are some reflexes that we are born with, that are important for development, that don’t end up being integrated properly. When these early reflexes don’t integrate properly, it can adversely affect your child’s development, learning and behaviour. Some of the problems that it may lead to include anxiety, hypersensitivity, poor adaptability, overly clingy, temper tantrums, speech problems, bed wetting, difficulty with new or stimulating experiences, difficulty learning to walk, poor balance, poor fine motor skills, difficulty spelling or writing among a list of things. We can’t stress how important it is to ensure that the early reflexes are integrating properly, for your child’s development and growth, by having a check up to see if we can help them. At Little Sprouts Chiropractic, we specialise in looking after and examining these reflexes with a special chiropractic technique called Retained Neonatal Reflexes, which is a soft, gentle, safe and non-invasive technique used to assist in the integration of these early reflexes, which may be related to development, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. If you want to find out more or have questions about Retained Neonatal Reflexes, I will be presenting a health talk on the 11th of April, everyone is welcome to come along, you don’t need to be a patient of our clinic to attend. Please contact the clinic to let us know that you would like to attend. Little Sprouts Chiropractic | 07 4898 1020
Apart from supporting children in becoming proficient in areas of academic achievement, schools, or other more formal modes of education, support children in a range of capabilities that include persistence, confidence, cooperation, resilience and emotional wellbeing alongside the essential skills that allow for resolve and ambitions for the future. Parents, and grandparents, bestow upon children the values, attitudes, potentials and desires from a family perspective. These elements may also govern the extent to which children may engage in learning opportunities both within the family setting and at school. Teachers introduce and clarify the concepts of the reading process to a class and patiently review and reinforce the concepts until it starts to make some sense to the children. Our parents encourage us to practice our reading and to try different strategies when the first approach did not work. So, who was doing the teaching in this instance – the teacher or the parents? Generally, we would say both. Teachers have the (expert) knowledge and proficiency that allow them to present complex information in ways that match the capacity of the children for learning. Parents, on the other hand, know that we would benefit from learning to persist in the face of difficult problems. While both parents and teachers are significant, albeit in different ways, as far as children’s learning is concerned, education is a shared responsibility. Schools, friends, families and communities all play distinctive but harmonising roles.

strategic RECOVERY FOR MINERS There’s nothing easy about working away and working shift work, and it’s especially hard to stay on track with your training goals.
Here’s an example for 5 on 5 off roster:
Chest / Leg
Many of you battle fatigue after gruelling 12 hour shifts to train in camp gyms but are sacrificing good sleep time to do it. In my opinion, the accumulated fatigue from such long shifts and reduced and poor quality sleep time can dramatically effect your performance, recovery and results.
Back / Arms / Shoulders / Core
Repeat each day twice in the 4 days
Remember that feeling when you take a week off training but feel amazing when you train again. That’s because you’ve recovered completely, for once! Many of us that train more than 3-4 times per week are overtraining.
“It takes 2-7 days for a neuromuscular system to recover from a strength training session”. Periods of intense strength training followed by periods of extended rest and recovery have proven to be highly effective. In fact, 5 times Mr Olympia, Dorian Yates, went through a period when he trained ONCE every 21 days… but that was one crazy workout!
Try reallocating your energy to recovering while you are away, and focus on training to your absolute maximum when you are home.
HOME Maximise Effort Split the strength routine into 2 days – for example:
Do as much cardio, preferably high intensity interval training, as time and energy levels will allow AWAY Maximise Recovery Stretch daily before & after shift with a full body stretch routine Core & bodyweight training – push ups, chin-ups, lunges, planks, crunches Light cardio – 20 minutes of cycling or walking (unless you’ve been walking all day) Overtraining while you are at home, and using your limited time & energy while you are away to recover & regenerate could be you ticket to maximising results and a better work / training balance.

Delta Riggs at Groovin the Moo
As a 10-year-old boy, a young Elliot Hammond stared wide-eyed at the unmistakable figure of Michael Jackson on stage. In 1996, what was then known as the ANZ Stadium, lit up with classic Jackson tunes, including Smooth Criminal, Beat It, Black or White and Heal the World. Since the moment he saw Michael Jackson all those years ago, music was all he could think about. The beats, the production, the way it made him feel. 19 years later, Hammond steps on the same stage, now known as Suncorp Stadium, in front of tens of thousands of people. As frontman for Melbourne-based band, the Delta Riggs, he was about to open for the Foo Fighters, on what was the 20th anniversary of the Foo Fighter’s first ever gig, and the first Australian show on their Sonic Highway’s world tour. “Supporting the Foo’s was a massive experience. We are used to playing in intimate venues in front of hundreds of people, so to perform in front of tens of thousands was surreal,” Elliot said. Backstage, the band listens to a range of different music to get psyched up, but on the first night
supporting the Foo’s in Brisbane, one band member had an encounter he would never forget.
having recently being rewarded “Live Act of the Year” by Rolling Stone’s Australia.
Michael Tramonte, known as Monte, lit up Twitter when Triple M Brisbane tweeted, “#JohnnyDepp was at last night’s @foofighters gig at Suncorp! Snapped with Monte from @thedeltariggs.” Monte’s photo with the Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, confirming the Hollywood hunk was backstage at the Foo Fighters concert.
Full of sexy swagger and smooth vocals, Dipz Zebazios is an Aussie rock album worth checking out. A limited release 12” mini album is set to hit the shelves this April, featuring remixes, alternate versions and unreleased tracks.
It’s not the first time the Delta Riggs have felt star-struck. As the group were warming up to take the stage in London, one of the band member’s spotted legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page, enter the gig. Jimmy then joined the band backstage after the 30-minute set, and complimented them on the great groove he felt listening to singles Supersonic Casualties and Rah Rah Radio. He then gave them his address so the Riggs could post him one of their records, the ultimate compliment. The Delta Riggs first released the album Hex. Love.Killer, before the release of the album sensation, Dipz Zebazios, which has received rave reviews. After a killer festival tour in the U.S. which sealed the deal to open for the Foo Fighters, the Delta Riggs can do no wrong,
“Our latest album has shaped the way our band has come together. It’s a completely different sound and delves deeper into the mechanics of the band,” Elliot said. So what was it like for the Melbourne lads to tour with Dave Grohl? “He is the super nice guy you’ve heard about. He’s quite elusive and enjoys his time to himself, which was perpetuated by Dave becoming a little crook toward the end of the tour. He has an incredibly intense personality. When you talk to him you can tell he’s taking everything in, processing everything. Great guy,” Elliot said. Catch the energy of the Delta Riggs, performing at Groovin the Moo in Townsville, May 10. MACKAY MOTORSHOW It’s not often that Mackay gets to see an all inclusive motor show where all facets of Motoring are on display at the same place. Come this May, Mackay Rod and Custom Club, in conjunction with Mackay Autobarn, will be putting on the Mackay Motorshow. The show has been running for 24 years, and proves itself year in, year out. This year is certainly no exception, if current entry forms are something to go off. The show has always catered for everything motoring and current entrants from Hotrod, street machines, drag/ road / historic bikes, boats and trucks. It is sure to impress and give the punters value for their investment. As any event co ordinator knows, events like these take months of planning and preparation and this wouldn’t be possible without the support from our sponsors, the entrants, the club members, for donating their time, and, of course, the public and for this we thank everyone! In 2013, the show welcomed the idea to turn the show into a North Queensland Meguires qualifying round. This encourages elite car builders from around the country to participate and this year they will vie for a spot in the Elite Hall in July in Sydney. This adds a new element to the already successful show. Short of travelling to Brisbane or South of the boarder, there is no where else in Queensland a car enthusiast can see so many elite cars in one place. The last two shows have seen the best of the best Street Machines including Peter Fitz... Rob Wilkie’s ‘35 five window coupe and Ian Gibbons’ ‘32 coupe pickup add to this years impressive line up. Anyone who follows the scene would know that Nathan Borgs DATSUN rewrote the street machine books earlier this year by taking out the Grand Champion award at the Summernats with his rotary powered Datsun ute. All things going to plan, the Datsun will be one of the vehicles coming up from the southern states.
A Meguires qualifying round wouldn’t be complete without the unveiling of some Elite master pieces. The unveilings are open to Elite street machines hot rods or bikes that have never been shown to the public in their current form and, at the time of print, we have three definite confirmations for unveilings, with the potential of a further couple of cars. Time permitting, the best part is that all the unveiled cars are actually Mackay cars which is a massive effort! Moving out of the Elite hall, there is a further 2000m2 of undercover area coupled with a large grassed and bitumen area for the further 250+ entrants expected over the weekend. The show opens at 9am on both days and finishes at 5pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. The entry for a vehicle is $15 for the first vehicle and free for subsequent vehicles owned by the same person. All the details can be found on the club website under up and coming events www.themrcc.com.au. The show also has trade stalls including clothing, car parts and most things car related and in between. There are food stalls, music and rides for the kids. So bring the family or grab a friend and come down to the show that has everyone talking. Entry is $15 for adults, $10 for pensioners when presenting pensioner card and children under14 are free when accompanied by paying adults. The Mackay Rod and Custom club is a non for profit organization with the majority of the profits being donated back into our community. For anyone wanting a stall at the event please call Jeff Fussell on 0417 112 741 or for general enquires please call Brendan English, preferably after 3pm on 0438 780 902

PHD in Finland Top Hat and Doctoral Sword in University in Finland In Finland, you are given a top hat and a sword when you get a PhD diploma. While most people graduate with a tall, black hat and a gown, PhD students graduating in Finland also get a sword. The sword features a black or golden clip and comes with a scabbard. It is the officially certified civilian sword of the Independent Republic of Finland. Additionally, it can be fitted with a golden emblem of the university. Women are enabled to be more creative with their attachment because, typically, their gowns aren’t strong enough to support both the sword and scabbard. One common example is to attach the sword to the belt of the skirt. Women also have the option to carry the sword if they choose so. Doctoral swords can be purchased in collective orders and have the person’s name, dissertation date, and the date of the Degree Ceremony etched into the sword. It’s fairly rare to be hit by lightning at all during one’s lifetime, which rolls in at a 1 in 3,000 chance of happening in the United States. However, one man was struck three times whilst he was alive. Not only that, but 4 years after his death, his gravestone was also hit by a lightning strike. Major Walter Summerford, a sportsman, survived the strikes. Summerford’s story joins other remarkable and surprising lightning strike cases.

However, one fact that many people don’t know is that they’re most likely still alive when you eat them raw. In fact, it’s quite important that they are alive when it comes to eating them - as dead ones are not safe to eat. To easily tell whether they’re still alive, check to see if their shell is firmly closed. If it isn’t, tap their shell and see if they close it. Oysters must be kept alive before being eaten raw. They’re hardy creatures and it’s not too difficult to store them alive; keep them cold, damp, and give them access to air. Do not put them in a bag of ice. The ice is fresh water which is toxic to the sea-dwelling creature.
