Small lakes, ponds and rivers are all either overgrown with reeds and covered by the blue skies, magnificent under the Sun and under cloudy skies, or nestled in the mountains. These towns frequently lie over the underground waters or wells of pristine mineral water. And it was these very waters that brought spa towns their fame long ago. Terrific thermal and mineral waters were discovered all over Europe in the 19th century. Many of the places have that striking “Kafkian” aura and there are numerous spots where small corners of reddish bricks meet massive fences made of cast iron. The Christian culture often mixes with the Ashkenazi Jewish culture, which is sometimes very well preserved, although with just a few remaining people. The squares and streets, with
their sometimes snotty, sometimes warmly welcoming, ornaments and colourful facades, are somehow both cheerful and spooky. Furthermore, they are at the same time beautiful, somehow disturbing and refreshingly calm. You should open your “inner eye” to see the beauty outside the landscapes bathed in a Southern sun. Quite on the contrary, there’s plenty of beauty in this comfortable “shade”. The beer, which comes in a wide variety of tastes, the wine, especially the white wine, and different “schnapps”, “palinkas” and other strong drinks can be a decent addition to the gourmet kitchen of the region, where nations and religions have mixed to yield such tremendous and spectacular results. The Mid-European towns have their souls come into blossom in thousands of colours under skies that are not always sunny or welcoming, but it’s just a part of their silent and elegant charms. All in all, this is a magical combination of casual charms and visual spectacles.
