The Italian ambassador is a passionate advocate of Italy and Serbia’s strong relations.

With an Italian EU presidency beckoning, Serbia’s leading trade partner will be in a position to have a real influence on the Western Balkan states’ EU aspirations, meaning those relations look set to become even stronger in the future

I think culture is important in the process of European integration because it will give Serbia the opportunity to step up and promote its identity as a long-time member of the European family.

This also improves the business climate, which is not only the result of strictly economic components, but also of a wider set of elements, such as the judiciary, the education system, the rule of law etc.

■ From the perspective of an EU founding-member state, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing Serbia during the EU integration process?

- We know that reforms are indispensable to progressing along the path that leads to the European Union. Serbia is already working on some crucial chapters, such as Justice and Home Affairs, the famous 23rd and 24th chapters. They are crucial and we hope we can help you to make substantial progress during Italy’s EU presidency.

We can see that the reform process I mentioned is already making progress in the very first weeks of the new government. The economy is key. Growth and employment is priority number one. Economic growth is what makes a country strong and what gives it the opportunity to improve in other sectors such as science or culture. It is the goal not only of Serbia, but also of all other European countries.

SMEs are the backbone of the Italian economy and their presence in Serbia and collaboration with Serbian enterprises could help the country develop its own SMEs system. We are also helping SMEs’ presence through cooperation programmes such as the Italian Credit Line, which supports SMEs through the local banking system and sustains local development through local public utilities.

■ On the 90th anniversary of the construction of Belgrade’s Italian Embassy building in April, a public competition was launched to design the embassy’s graphic identity.

One of the tasks is to produce a trademark that includes a symbol of ItalianSerbian friendship. In your opinion, what are that friendship’s most important symbols?

- I do not have a precise answer to your question on the symbols of our friendship. I will leave it to the young Serbian artists who participate in our contest. But I have to say that I am very proud to live and work in a palace that is considered one of most beautiful buildings in Belgrade. It was designed 90 years ago by an Italian architect specifically to be the embassy and residence of the ambassador. It was the decision of Princess

Based on FIAT’s production boosting plans and new Italian investments, we can expect Italy to remain Serbia’s number one foreign trade partner.

■ Italy also has one of the investors and contractors in the South Stream project, which is also a strategically very important project for Serbia. Do you expect the two countries to cooperate in this respect?

- Apart from Russian company Gazprom, which owns a 50% share in the South Stream, Italian company ENI is the second biggest shareholder, with 20%, while French company Electricite de France (EDF) and German company Wintershall each have a 15% share. In the very beginning this was only a Russian and Italian project. We are talking about a huge $20-billion investment, while the estimated costs of construction of the Serbian section of the pipeline are €1.7 billion. The Serbian leg of the pipeline will be 470km long. Construction of the South Stream gas pipeline will engage many Serbian companies, with close to 2,000 workers hired directly and many more indirectly. In order to illustrate the importance of this gas pipeline to Italy, let me just mention that Gazprom exports between 22 and 25 billion cubic metres of gas to Italy annually. n 2013 Intesa Leasing was the Serbian market’s most successful leasing company. The quality of the company’s portfolio, as expressed through its NPL level, is the business success indicator mentioned most frequently; Intesa Leasing’s level is three times lower than the market average.

“The reason for this lies mainly in the fact that, since the very beginning of our operations, we have had clear rules in terms of finance approvals,” says Intesa Leasing CEO Nebojša Janićijević. “We also regularly monitor developments regarding funding subjects and maintain continuous contact with our clients, while trying to help those experiencing difficulties with their leasing payments by finding an adequate solution.

“The claims payment process has been automated, just like the company’s other crucial processes, ensuring maximum work efficiency and contributing to good payment results. Our long-term stability and tendency for profitability hasn’t changed during the crisis period.”

■ One of the biggest topics in the leasing market is the number of vehicles that get returned, meaning leasing companies have to find new buyers.

Yet Intesa Leasing hasn’t had a single vehicle returned, i.e. they’ve all been sold. Why is this?

- If you set up the financing approval and claims-payment processes properly, and then automate them to ensure their efficient implementation, the result will be fewer ter-

Constitution

The Italian state grew out of the kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont, where in 1848 King Charles Albert introduced a constitution that remained the basic law, of his kingdom and later of Italy, for nearly 100 years.

It provided for a bicameral parliament with a cabinet appointed by the king. With time, the power of the crown diminished, and ministers became responsible to parliament rather than to the king. After World War II, on 2nd June 1946, the Italians voted in a referendum to replace the monarchy with a republic. A Constituent Assembly worked out a new constitution, which came into force on 1st January 1948.

Italian food is a cuisine of completeness. What you will be eating at lunch time is still one of the main talking points in Italy. Food and its quality are very important to Italian people.

There are very few foreign food restaurants in Italy because the Italians do not think this is necessary. They consider their cuisine, to be the only food to eat, with wholesomeness in all things, quality and taste.

The Italian way of cooking food has developed over hundreds of years. It is an old cuisine. Pasta is the main staple food made of wheat.

The sauces in general contain little meat which is mainly used to give flavor, rather than be the main ingredient.

The type of pasta and sauce varies with each region of Italy. Each has its own traditional food, like they each have their own dialect.

Italians in general refuse to be seduced by the fast food movement. Shops and businesses still shut from 1.30 p.m.-4.00 p.m. to enable workers to enjoy sitting down to a proper meal in the middle of the day. Many Italians still eat their main meal at lunch time, with a small supper in the evening.

Borders

Apart from Italian borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, Italy also shares borders with two other small countries: the Republic of San Marino and Vatican City State.

San Marino is the oldest surviving sovereign state since September 3th 301AD and the oldest republic in the SAN MARINO World, since 1291.

People

Italians are generally open and friendly. The family is the centre of the social structure and provides both emotional and financial support to its members.

Italians are passionate about their culture and the Italian language. Italian is a musical language that Italians sing with a joyful cadence. They love their Italian way of life and Italian traditions and stubbornly refuse to change it Life is Italy is a dichotomy. On one hand it is a European nation with all the modern inventions of 21st century life but on the other hand life is unchanged in the small villages and moves at the slow pace that it always has.

Italians on the whole believe in living life to the fullest. They laugh, shout, cry and argue at the top of their voices in public. They are always blasting their horns if you drive too slowly. However, Italian sense of humor is ever present.

Villas & Gardens

There are so many wonderful palaces and great estates with beautiful gardens in Italy that one could never see them all. The words palace and villa, have different connotations in Italy where they originated.

The latin word Palatium was originally to denote the residences of popes and kings and then evolved to describe the houses of the people in power in the smaller Italian states, resulting in that now the Italian word Palazzo is used to describe any large building or block of flats or offices.

In medieval times, the word “Villa” came to signify a country estate with either a castle or a palatial country house, surrounded by magnificent gardens. In modern times now, a villa can be an ordinary house which has an attached garden, as distinct from a flat or apartment without a garden.

Sports

When it comes to popular sports in Italy, football is number one. The Italian national football team won the World Cup in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.

Italy does not just treat football like a sport; football is almost like a religion. Italy has provided some of the most dominant teams both in international competition as well as in European competition. Every Saturday and Sunday thousands upon thousands of people leave their home to watch the game live, and of course, millions take the time on Monday to discuss the results.

Italy is also one of the best basketball nations in all of Europe. Until around the year 2000, the Italian league was considered the best domestic league outside of the United States.

Pallavolo (Volleyball) is actually very popular in Italy and the country has many amateur players who play recreationally. The Italian Volleyball League is a respected league among professional players .

Only the Belgians have won more World Cycling Championships than Italy has. Italy also is home to a long distance bicycle race called the Giro d’Italia that is famous throughout the world.

Fashion

Italian fashion has been rated as the best in the world. La Bella Figura is the term denoting the importance to be seen as looking good with style.

The Italian fashion industry is one of Italy’s largest outputs with Italian clothing, shoes and handbags being exported all over the world, renowned for their quality and leading edge style.

Companies such as Prada, Gucci, Max Mara, Ferragamo, Versace, Dolce e Gabbana, Armani, are famous the world over and their creations being exhibited in all the fashion halls of every large city. Milan is known as the fashion capital of the world where every year during fashion week, the world of fashion descends to line the catwalks with supermodels wearing their fantastic expensive creations.

ome estimates say that is home to half the world’s great art treasures. Italy has 3430 museums, 409 of which are in Tuscany, 380 in Emilia-Romagna, 346 in Lombardy and 302 in Lazio. There are 216 archaeological sites, 10,000 churches, 1,500 monasteries, 40,000 assorted castles, towers and fortresses, 30,000 stately homes, 4,000 gardens, 1,000 major historic town centres and more besides. Italy has been home to many civilisations, including the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans. For more than 2000 years Italy experienced migrations, invasions and was divided into many independent states until 1861, when it became a nation-state. Due to this comparatively late unification, and the historical autonomy of the regions that comprise the Italian peninsula, many traditions and customs that are now recognised as distinctly Italian can be identified by their regions of origin.

LITERATURE The basis of modern Italian literature in the Italian language begins with the early

years of the 1200s. The religious revival wrought by St. Francis of Assisi is considered the first “Italian voice” in literature. It is believed that during the first half of the 1200s, Giacomo da Lentini invented the sonnet form. Dante’s The Divine Comedy is a masterpiece of world literature that helped create the Italian literary language. The two great writers of the 1300s, Petrarch and Boccaccio, sought out and imitated the works of antiquity and cultivated their own artistic personalities. Petrarch achieved fame through his collection of poems, the Canzoniere. Equally influential was Boccaccio’s Decameron, one of the most popular collections of short stories ever written.

The Romanticism coincided with some ideas of the Risorgimento, the patriotic movement that brought Italy political unity and freedom from foreign domination. Italian writers embraced Romanticism in the early 19th century.

The time of Italy’s rebirth was heralded by the poets Vittorio Alfieri, Ugo Foscolo and Giacomo Leopardi. In the late 1800s, a realistic literary movement called Verismo played a major role in Italian literature.

A movement called Futurism influenced Italian literature in the early 1900s. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti wrote The Futurist Manifesto. Among the Italian literary figures of the early 20th century, Gabriele d’Annunzio, Luigi Pirandello, and Grazia Deledda achieved international renown. Leading writers of the postwar era are Ignazio Silone, Alberto Moravia, Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco,

ARCHITECTURE The greatest flowering of Italian architecture took place during the Renaissance. Italian Renaissance architects based their theories and practices on Classical Roman examples. The Renaissance revival of Classical Rome was as important in architecture as it was in literature.

portion and a unit of measurement based on the human scale.

During the Renaissance, architects trained as humanists helped raise the status of their profession from skilled laborer to artist. They hoped to create structures that would appeal to both emotion and reason. Three key figures in Renaissance architecture were Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, and Andrea Palladio.

ART The Italian Renaissance produced many of the greatest painters in art history. They were all influenced by the

seum and Pantheon, was considered essential to an architect’s training. Classical orders and architectural elements such as columns, pilasters, pediments, entablatures, arches, and domes form the vocabulary of Renaissance buildings. Vitruvius’s writings on architecture also influenced the Renaissance definition of beauty in architecture. work of Giotto di Bondone in the late 1200s. One of the most influential artists who ever lived, Giotto changed the course of Western art by painting in a new realistic style.

Florence became the center of early Renaissance art. The great Florentine masters of painting included Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Andrea Mantegna, Sandro Botticelli, and Paolo Uccello. The greatest artist of the 1400s was probably Leonardo da Vinci. His portrait Mona Lisa and his religious scene The Last Supper are among the most famous paintings in history. The later Renaissance was dominated by Raphael and Michelangelo. In Venice, a number of artists were painting richly colored works during the 1500s. The most famous Venetian masters included Giorgione, Titian and Tintoretto. Italian painters dominated the

In the 1900s, many Italians played leading roles in the development of modern art. Giorgio de Chirico gained fame for his haunting paintings of empty city squares. Amedeo Modigliani won renown with a series of portraits.

MUSIC Italian words are used to tell us how music is played, because music writing began in Italy. Having given birth to opera, Italy provides many of the very foundations of the classical music tradition.

Some of the instruments that are often associated with classical music, including the piano and violin were invented in Italy. Italian composers have played a major role in music since the Middle Ages.

In the 1000s, Guido of Arezzo, an Italian monk, developed a revolutionary system of notation and method of sight-singing.

The Gregorian chant, troubadour song, and the madrigal were forms in early Italian music.

During the Renaissance, Giovanni Palestrina composed masterpieces of choral music for use in church services. The first operas were composed in Florence in the 1590s. Important composers of the late 1600s and early 1700s included Alessandro Scarlatti, his son Domenico, and Antonio Vivaldi. FILM The history of Italian film is an epic that has guided and shaped the course of international cinema. It can be examined in terms of its uniqueness, but it should also be studied as part of the field of forces with which it has been compared since its beginnings. It has developed in a process that is at times slow, defensive and regres-

sive, at times rapid and expansive. It encompasses many different histories that have influenced, affected, changed and interacted within its fabric and shaped the context in which it has evolved. Today, Italian cinema can be studied in an entirely new way thanks to recent and effective developments in the field of cinema studies. It can be broken down and analysed on a microcellular level, but it can also be observed from a panoramic viewpoint that makes it possible to focus on its many different dimensions at the same time. Such perspective can put its history into a wider context thanks to the accessibility of information and images that was unimaginable a few decades ago.

Italian filmmaking developed in the 1940s. The new generation of film directorsincluded Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, and Luchino Visconti. They created new European film movement, Neorealism. During the 1950s and 1960s, earthy comedies gained international success, due to the popularity of Italian movie

COMICS Italian comic books, like Alan Ford, were very popular in the former Yugoslavia during the 1970s. The first comic book in Italy was published on 27th December 1908, when the first issue of the Corriere dei Piccoli hit the stands where Attilio Mussino has produced an astonishing range of characters, including a little black child, Bilbolbul, whose almost surrealist adventures took place in a fantastic Africa. In 1932 publisher Lotario Vecchi had already begun publication of Jumbo magazine, using exclusively North American authors. The magazine reached a circulation of 350,000 copies in Italy. In December 1932 the first Disney comic in Italy, Mickey Mouse, or Topolino in Italian, had been launched by the Florentine publisher Nerbini. In 1945, while attending the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Hugo Pratt created, in collaboration with Mario Faustinelli and Alberto Ongaro, Asso di Picche. Their distinctive approach

DESIGN Italian design embraces every form of industrial design including interior design, fashion design and architectural projects.

A culture of design can be traced to the Industrial Revolution in the XIX century in England and arrived in Italy only later.

Around 1870 fairs and specific schools were dedicated to it and were being held in the territory. Each area was specializing in a specific sector: Milan in 1881 was leader in the mechanical industry, whereas Turin saw the Liberty style emerging from 1902 with Eugenio Quarti, Carlo Bugatti and Ernesto Basile.

The Esposizione di Milano in 1906 moved things along to a great degree, but, despite the success of research, design had already consolidated internationally and there was no way for Italy to distinguish itself by just catching up. It was around 1910 that Italy found the solution: diversification. This was done through research and experimentation in aeronautic and automotive industries: FIAT, Lancia and A.L.F.A. were born at the beginning of the 20th Century. Thanks to Forlanini design, the first course of aeronautics was held at Politecnico di Milano University, which became a hub for design research.

In 1940 Italia joined World War II and once out of it, in 1947, it focused on objects like Vespa Piaggio (1946), designed

by Corradino d’Ascanio, and Lambretta Innocenti (1947), designed by Cesare Pallavicino and Pierluigi Torre.

The ‘80s saw many flourishing furniture designers, above all Alessi (with first

THE VENICE BIENNALE (LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA) The Venice Biennale is an international art exhibition founded in 1895 that became a godsend for a city desperate for some modern significance. It takes place every two years and lasts six months.

Although the opening week may be an opportunity for art dealers and artists to party, spend other people’s money and compete with each other, over subsequent months it also attracts thousands of ‘normal’ visitors and brings neglected bits of the city to life.

An international event with countries organising their own shows, the original base of the Biennale was in the Giardini, a park near the waterfront in the Castello district. Over the years various countries built permanent ‘pavilions’ here to host their shows, some of which are of great architectural interest. ■
