19 Schools Congratulations to our ‘A’ rated schools

For the first time, all five area high schools received an ‘A’ rating.

Our schools are making huge strides in educational excellence in this community. Our students attend more ‘A’ schools than any other city in Broward County. In January, the Coral Springs Charter School received an ‘A’ rating for the ninth consecutive year.

Coral Springs Charter, along with Coral Glades High, Coral Springs High, J.P. Taravella High, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High all received an ‘A’ rating based on students’ performance relative to state standards, graduation rates, participation and success in accelerated courses, and postsecondary preparation.

“The positive school grade results reflect the determination and commitment of our administrators, teachers and students as they moved forward with academic excellence guiding each decision they made,” said Sherry Hage, Vice President of Education for Charter Schools USA. “I am so proud of the Coral Springs Charter School, its administration, teachers and students who have worked so hard to achieve the goal of being acknowledged as an ‘A’ rated school, over and over again. I congratulate them and know how difficult it is to continue to raise the bar to earn an ‘A’ each year as CSCS has,” Commissioner Claudette Bruck said.

New set of Wheels A

New Police cars hit the streets Residents may have spotted the new Coral Springs Police cars around town. The City upgraded its police fleet by adding 30 new police cars.

Officers say the new vehicles will offer better maneuverability and increased visibility in the community. The Ford Taurus Interceptors are equipped with four wheel drive and have been tested in vehicle pursuit conditions.

Nineteen Interceptors are already in use and 11 more are expected to hit the streets within the next month.

“We’re really excited about the new Interceptors. We think they’ll help improve our safety and increase our visibility in our community,” Captain Brad Mock said.

Police previously had been driving a fleet of Ford Crown Victorias, which were first purchased in 1998. Ford discontinued manufacturing the Crown Victoria and developed the Ford Taurus Police Interceptor to replace it.

“The Ford Interceptor is popular amongst law enforcement agencies around the country,” Captain Mock added. “Many agencies around South Florida are using this model vehicle.”

Typically, service departments within the City get new vehicles every 5 years. The police department, in an attempt to help save the city money, extended the life of its cars by a year.

Some of the cars will have sophisticated mapping software that will better track stolen vehicles, and give officers real time access to criminal databases.

The City decided on the Ford Interceptor after a rigorous search. Captain Mock helped coordinate the process, working with dealers to arrange testing dates and the eventual purchase of the vehicles.

The new cars are pursuit vehicles and are built to withstand the rigors of police work, which assists to improve the life of the vehicles. The all-wheel drive feature allows officers to operate the vehicles in adverse weather conditions more safely and efficiently.

The City’s mechanics will handle repairs on the vehicles, saving the City thousands of dollars.

his golden anniversary is a great time to come together as a community and celebrate the place we love to call home.

The State of the City event was a huge success, drawing more than 1,300 residents to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts to listen to Good Vibrations, a tribute band for the famous Beach Boys.

In addition, hundreds came out for the Family Fun Day and Car Show at the Sportsplex, where they enjoyed live entertainment, bounce houses and sampled some delicious bites from food trucks.

The first annual BizArt Festival was another fun event highlighting art and local businesses. Visitors enjoyed the public art tours and live music. Also, the Once Upon a Dream musical at the Center for the Arts featured local high school students along with surprise guests.

Photo galleries for these and other 50th Anniversary partner events are available on our special web site, CoralSprings50.org. The site features the City’s history, a calendar of events and volunteer opportunities. The City is asking for residents to share their Coral Springs Story and photos from life in Coral Springs via the web site.

Our City Facebook timeline has also been updated to include a look back through important historic milestones.

Staff and volunteers are planning additional events for the entire community to enjoy, including several special events in July to commemorate the City’s July 10 birthdate.

New facilities at Mullins Park underway As the City’s oldest and largest park, Mullins has served the community well for more than 48 years. But its expansion to meet growing needs has often been ad hoc, rather than designed. An initiative is underway to revitalize its appearance, with extensive facility and landscaping improvements. Three sports buildings have been demolished and are currently under construction. Renovations to fields and sand volleyball courts are completed, and an extensive pathway, landscaping and signage program is in progress.

City Hall in the Mall offers extended passport hours Starting in March through the end of May, City Hall in the Mall will be offering extended passport hours every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their office located at the Coral Square Mall. Passport services will continue to be offered at the Coral Square Mall as a convenient location Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Passports are now being offered in two forms: a Passport book (for air, sea or land border travel) or a wallet-size U.S. Passport card (for land border and sea travel only). The price for a passport book is $135 for adults and $105 for children, age 15 years or younger. The wallet-sized card costs $55 for adults and $40 for children, age 15 years or younger.

Please note that these fees must be paid in two separate checks, with $25 payable to the City of Coral Springs and the remainder to the U.S. Department of State.

Passport applications may also be submitted at Citizen Services in City Hall, 9551 W. Sample Road, weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. This location does not offer passport photo services. For details, call 954-344-1001.

Seeking volunteers and sponsors for next September 11th 5K Each year, the City has held memorials to remember the victims and honor the heroes of September 11, 2001. This year, the City will host its second annual September 11th 5K Remembrance and are in need of volunteers and event sponsors.

The 5K follows a flat course through the heart of Coral Springs, starting and finishing at the September 11th Memorial located in front of the Northwest Regional Library. The memorial features a piece of the World Trade Center and a large patriotic brass plaque, and can be visited yearround.

A

Bridge to the Past A drive through history Recently, eight classes from Parkside Elementary enjoyed rides on their yellow school bus through Coral Springs’ first streets and past some of its earliest structures. With compass in hand, they turned “north, south, east and west” traveling past the first real estate office and police station (now the Museum of Coral Springs History), the first pool located in Mullins Park, the first site of school portables (now Broward Health Coral Springs), our first gas station and even the oldest house in the City.

“After driving through the Covered Bridge, we rode on the first paved street, also known as Wiles Road. We drove past the first high school and elementary school – Coral Springs High and Hunt Elementary, and the first McDonald’s. We also passed by City Hall, which was built with 200 year-old bricks and headed north to the Sportsplex,” City Historian Wendy Wangberg said.

“We got to sing to the animals at the Sawgrass Nature Center, pass Sawgrass Springs Middle and Coral Glades High Schools, where many of their older brothers and sisters attend. Next stop was the Aquatic Complex, Tennis Center, Dog Park and saw people pull weeds at the Community Garden. After passing the Iceplex, the bus drove east to the first Burger King, south on Coral Springs Drive and east to the Center for the Arts that used to have a gymnasium. The tour was a lot of fun with the students,” Wangberg said.

City receives grant to re-engage baby boomers The City received a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to create a service plan to engage our newly retired citizens. Coral Springs will use the grant to involve newly retired citizens, coordinate volunteers and assist the City in meeting its goal of beautifying the community.

“Coral Springs is reaching out to our community to engage our newly retired citizens in helping address our City aesthetics and we look forward to working with them to keep our City clean and beautiful,” Mayor Vince Boccard said.

The City hosts many seniors as volunteers, and positions are available to assist staff in most departments.

City plans to make roads safer for cyclists Plans to make roads safer for cyclists are underway. With more people using bikes as their form of transportation, officials want to reinforce the importance of bicycle safety and help improve current roadways.

Cyclists dramatically decrease their chances of getting hit by car by riding on the road instead of the sidewalk. To make roads safer and more convenient, a transportation study on our existing roadways suggested restriping, narrowing travel lanes on roads with speeds of 35 miles per hour or less from 12 to 10 feet or add pavement to existing roads that currently do not have a curb or gutter.

Until these projects are completed, there are a few things you can do to make cycling safer. Florida law states that you must pass cyclists by at least three feet when driving.

Always wait for a safe opportunity to pass and keep an eye out for bicyclists when turning or exiting a driveway.

“It’s important for cyclists to realize that there is a greater chance of getting hit on the sidewalk than if they were to ride on the street,” Broward County Engineering Complete Streets Program Manager Mark Horowitz said.

The chances of being hit by a car increases when riding on a sidewalk because when exiting a driveway, motorists typically cross the sidewalk without looking and generally only look in the direction traffic is coming from.

When riding your bike: • Make sure your bicycle works properly.

• Obey all traffic laws and use hand signals.

• Wear a bicycle helmet.

• Ride with the flow of traffic, never against it.

• Wear bright clothing.

• Have working lights and reflectors if riding at night.

Celebrate nature at EarthFest Your kids will have a wild time at EarthFest on Saturday, April 20 at Sandy Ridge Sanctuary. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and it will feature lots of informative sessions the entire family will enjoy. There will also be wildlife exhibits, guided tours, plant giveaways for Coral Springs residents, children’s activities and refreshments.

The ecological integrity of Sandy Ridge is preserved by maintaining a largely nuisance plant free environment. This in turn allows native wildlife to flourish in the park.

Embrace all faiths at National Day of Prayer The City embraces people of different faiths, and the National Day of Prayer celebration highlights the strength in diversity found in our community. The event is held to foster a sense of unity by joining as a community to pray for our country, our elected officials and peace.

Every house of worship in the greater Coral Springs area is invited to participate. Youth from participating congregations lead the prayers. This nondenominational event, hosted by the City’s Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee, brings together people from all faiths to pray, sing or chant together, fostering an understanding of the world’s different religions.

The event is scheduled on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Charter School. There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be available after the program.

Competition in the job market is tough, but students who attend the City’s Teen Success Day will learn a few handy tips for their next interview. The Teen Success Day will help teens with job-related must-haves, such as leadership, interviewing and presentation skills, appropriate business dress, projecting self-confidence and more. Students who attend will receive volunteer service hours and lunch will be provided.

Bring your family and friends to WorldFest on Sunday, April 7 at the Sportsplex and experience the diverse cultures that make up the community of Coral Springs. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and features ethnic foods, live entertainment, arts and crafts, games and amusements for children. This year, there will be fun zones for children and students. Kid’s World will include arts and crafts and entertainment for children under 12 years old. Kids will receive a passport, which will be stamped as they visit different corners of the world. Prizes will be given to participants. The young and old at heart will enjoy playing with the animals at the Petting Zoo. For our teens, a special attraction called Teen World will feature multi-cultural dances, challenging games and other fun activities hosted

by Pure Energy of Coral Springs.

Once again, the members of the Multi-Cultural Committee will conduct a free Cooking Demonstration where you can

sample delicious and unusual food items, but also learn how to cook them. Food, entertainment, vendor and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Community groups and individuals who are willing to volunteer their time to display their talent on stage also are encouraged to sign up.

There is no charge for the outdoor WorldFest entertainment, music and exhibitions, but there is a $3 parking fee and a reasonable charge for the food and rides.

“It’s a lot of fun to walk through the event and see the myriad of activities showcasing the different cultures that abound in our community at large,” Community Relations Manager Joyce Campos said. “The event just gets better every year.”

Join us for an afternoon of tea and live entertainment The Coral Springs Multi-Cultural Committee invites you to attend “CommuniTea” – a Tea Party with a multi-cultural flair, on Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay, located at 11775 Heron Bay Blvd. This annual event will provide an afternoon of fun for family and friends – and of course men are welcome. This year, the event will feature “A Touch of Gold” to help celebrate the City’s 50th Anniversary.

Bring your own special teacup, and gifts will be offered for interesting teacup stories and best decorated tables. Guests are encouraged to wear ethnic attire or “a touch of gold” in their clothing to enhance the theme. If you cannot attend, but want to support the event, you may sponsor a table for $200 for ten people. Admission is $20 per person and includes delightful hors d’oeuvres, dessert items, and an array of international teas sponsored by Whole Foods Market® of Coral Springs.

There will be a variety of entertainment throughout the afternoon. Tickets will be available at the end of April at City Hall and City Hall in the Mall.

Museum of Art to host golf tournament

Residents come together to paint water tank Coral Springs neighbors came together and painted a giant mural on the water tank at Mullins Park earlier this month. The tank is located in the southeast section of the park, visible from the nearby athletic fields.

“More than an art project, the mural is a community building project that uses collective art creation as a way of bringing the community together,” Museum of Art Executive Director Bryan W. Knicely said.

Coral Springs received a $67,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to paint the mural.

More than 300 contest entries were submitted and of the 22 finalists, Stoneman Douglas senior Rebecca Lowy, 17, was selected. Her design was later approved by the Public Art Committee and the City Commission. All materials were provided by the Coral Springs Museum of Art and students received service hours for participating.

“The mural represents Coral Springs and the harmony in our diverse community,” Knicely added.

Residents painted the mural under the supervision of six professional artists: Anne Marie Goss, Al Razza, Hong Nham, Janet Gold, Jan Kolenda and Lester Salazar.

On Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m., the mural will be dedicated in a community celebration that will include music, games, art and food trucks.

On Saturday, March 30, come to the Country Club of Coral Springs to participate in the Inaugural Coral Springs Museum of Art Golf Tournament. Proceeds from this event will help the Museum expand its many educational and community building programs.

For $150, patrons will enjoy a fun-filled day featuring a barbecue, a friendly putting green contest, 18 holes of golf, and finishing with a delicious dinner. If you don’t play golf, join the players for the dinner and auction at $40 per person.

Spring Exhibitions Currently on display through June 1 are the works of Ramon Vilanova, one of the great plein air landscape painters living in Europe. Vilanova was born and raised near Barcelona, Spain. His love of the landscape is deep and he senses instinctively how to capture its beauty. The artist has a remarkable, intuitive understanding of color.

Tamarac artist, Olga Duenas, is on exhibit in the East Gallery through March 23. Color Surge, will feature her abstract paintings and new digital work. Mortimer Geisler will also be on exhibit in the Kuhn Family Gallery with a selection of his geometric paintings.

Shushana Caplan draws on her family’s background and the trials they faced in when they were sent to Siberia during WWII for her body of work in the April exhibition. The mixed media pieces are accompanied by stories that will enhance the viewing experience. The Kuhn Family Gallery will feature painter, Phyllis Sperber, with a retrospective of her work including portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

Summer Camp and Classes The Coral Springs Museum of Art is offering Summer Camp ArtShops for children and teens ages 6 to 16. Art Camp begins June 10 and runs for 10 weeks. Children may sign up for one, two or more weeks.

Summer Camp ArtShops consist of either a three-hour morning or afternoon ArtShop. Children may attend both sessions. The Museum offers lunchtime supervision for $10 a week, but students must bring their own lunch. ArtShop fees are $110 and up. Member and sibling discounts are available.

ArtShops are divided by age and subject, some of the workshops offered are Ceramic Hand-Building, Exploring Sculpture, Art of the Animal, Drawing, Acrylic Painting, Cartooning, Comic Book Design, Papiér Mache, Adventures in Art and much more. Classes are taught by professional artists.

Family Concert Series Enjoy free family-friendly concert at the park Come and enjoy music with your family and friends at Betti Stradling Park for the City’s free Family Concert at the Park.

Breeze, a five-piece band, will perform rock and roll on Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Parking and admission is free.

Stay fit with Aquacise and Stretch n’ Flex Classes Residents looking for a way to stay cool and in shape have to look no farther than Aquatic Services.

Aquacise fitness classes are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for a low-impact yet effective waterbased workout that can burn up to 450 calories an hour.

Participants are treated to resistance-based exercises using the pull of the water. Certified instructors lead all classes.

Participants are encouraged to wear water-safe shoes, available at most local retail stores. Classes focus on core

strengthening, cardio and stretches to improve flexibility.

A Stretch n’ Flex class is also available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The class is non-aerobic and a great way to stay physically fit in a weightless environment.

Both classes are held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Cypress Park Pool, 1300 Coral Springs Drive, and are only $3 each or $30 for a package of 12 classes.

Children can learn life-saving skills at Safety Town Children will learn valuable, life-saving skills during the City’s 24th annual Safety Town of Coral Springs program.

Safety Town is a comprehensive, early childhood, hands-on safety education program that introduces children ages 4½ to 6½ to real-life safety situations.

Registration for Safety Town is set for Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Safety Town in Kiwanis Park.

The cost is $60, and participants must meet the age requirement as of June 2010. Proof of age, such as birth certificate or passport, is required at registration.

The tentative schedule for Safety Town is as follows: • Session 1: June 17 to July 28, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

• Session 2: July 8 to July 19, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

• Session 3: July 8 to July 19, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• Session 4: July 22 to August 2, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

• Session 5: July 22 to August 2, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Parents must register their own children. No more than two children, including siblings and friends, can be

grouped together. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis because of limited class size.

Student chefs to participate in Teen Cook Off Student chefs have signed up and spatulas are ready to fly for the Teen Cook Off on Saturday, April 6 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Residents are invited to watch as these local teens showcase their culinary talents. Teams will be given the same ingredients and they must whip up a savory meal using those components. The winning team will be awarded “The Plate,”

which is passed down annually to the winning team.

The competition will be held at different City fire stations and The Country Club of Coral Springs, located at 10800 West Sample Road.

Experience new shows at Center for the Arts The Coral Springs Center for the Arts is featuring a great new lineup this Spring.

On March 24, “The Three Latin Tenors” from Sy Sugar’s Pops Orchestra will charm the audience with their glorious tenor voices and harmonies.

If magic is your thing, don’t miss Jason Bishop on March 30. From his breathtaking Double Levitation to his cutting edge Op-Art and Plasma Illusions, his show will feature stunning and original state-of-the-art magic.

From the people who bring you “Battle of the Boros” comes an oldies concert with local flair: Battle of the Local Doo-Wop Bands, performing on April 7.

Then on April 11, join us for a night with singing legend Neil Sedaka. For more than fifty years, Neil has written, performed, produced, and inspired countless songs, and his canon of compositions will no doubt continue to stand the test of time. On May 10, singing sensation Celtic Woman will perform classic Irish tunes.

Summer theater camps Budding thespians can take part in acting camps right in Coral Springs at the City’s own Center for the Arts.

The Coral Springs Institute for the Performing Arts is currently accepting applications for its Next Stop Broadway Camp, which pairs actors with trained instructors. Campers attend a variety of classes in acting, dance, stagecraft and more. Camp sessions are offered for ages 6 to 13, and ages 13 and up. Session costs start at $705. A 10 percent discount is available for registrations made by March 25.

Youth Sessions begin June 10 (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), July 1 (Disney’s Toy Story: The Musical) and July 29 (Shrek: The Musical). The Teen Session begins July 1 for Shrek: The Musical.
