A régi és az új épületek kapcsolatának szép példája a hollandiai pálmaház (8–11. oldal). A régi tipológia új felfogásának eredménye egy sok üvegfelülettel határolt pavilon, íves, előpatinázott rézlemezzel borított tetővel, mely anyag a régi épület ablakfülkéin is megjelenik. Sokkal prózaibb célú Varsó új vízkezelője (22–25. oldal), melyben szintén felfedezhető a nyeregtetős ház archetípusa és a 19. századi szomszédságban megpillantható ablakfülkék íve. A réz itt a leghagyományosabb formájában, tetőfedő anyagként jelenik meg. A réz változatos – áttetsző és formázott – alakban emeli a fantáziátlan 20. századi épület színvonalát (16–17. és 30–31. oldal). Végezetül, ahogy kezdtük az elején, bemutatjuk az olaszországi Thiene volt közfürdőjének átépítésének példáján, hogy a réz képes finoman újrarajzolni a történelmi városképet (36-38. oldal). Itt, a feleslegessé vált épület új életet kapott mint ifjúsági központ, melyet a természetes vonalú, íves réz héjak határoznak meg.

Reméljük, hogy élvezik majd ezt az utazást az inspiráló projektek körül, ahol a réz az újító építészeti és városépítési megoldások katalizátora.

Magazinunk ezen számát a lakó- és munkakörnyezetünket újjáteremtő építészi leleménynek szenteljük. A meglévő épületek és a városkép megőrzése és megtöltése új élettel fenntartható, kevesebb forrást igényel, és még sok egyéb szempontból előnyös. Magában hordozza azonban a kihívást is, az eredmény, a történelem és a 21. század összjátéka mindig az építész egyedi megközelítését tükrözi.

A bemutatott sokféle projekt, különböző válasz erre a feladatra. A bővítések és felújítások sora, a műemléki környezetbe illesztett új épületek új tartalommal töltik meg a városrészeket. Egyben mégis hasonlítanak: egyediségüket építészeti kifejezésmódként a réznek és ötvözeteinek változatos felhasználása adja.

Vezető cikkünk is szépen példázza ezt. Itt a sárgaréz borítású tömeg a műemléképületek között kanyarog, új sétaútvonalakat határoz meg, és újszerűen emeli ki a régi katedrálist. Most modern és csillogó, később a sárgaréz sötétedik és mattul, időtlen megjelenést ölt magára.

Ugyanezt a minőséget képviseli az előoxidált rézburkolatú történelmi villa Olaszországban, ahol az épület új, szállodaszerepének megfelelően átrajzolták a közlekedési útvonalakat és tengelyeket.

A réz kortalansága és állandó jelenléte az építészetben ihlette a spanyol kastély kiegészítését sárgaréz elemekkel (34-35. oldal). Nincs semmi tettetés az egyszerű utalásban, és az absztrakt formák tökéletesen illenek masszív kőromokhoz. Ez a projekt párhuzamosságot mutat a

Carmen Izquierdo építész terve egy pályázat nyertes elképzeléséből fejlődött ki, középpontja a teljes egészében sárgarézből és üvegből álló kortárs homlokzatképzésű szárny, mely kanyargós vonal mentén számos régi épületet köt a harmonikus összkép csokrába. A Kyrkogatan felé eső utcai homlokzaton a csatlakozó épület tetőzetének síkját követő sárgaréz előtető nyúlik ki a bejáratot védelmezve a fogadóudvar felé. Az aranyló tömb tovább húzódik a Kungsgatan

felé, majd a katedrálist az előadótermet magába foglaló feltűnő tömeggel közelíti meg.

A tölcsérszerű ablak szándékoltan a műemlék tornyokra nyílik.

A belső tér súlypontja az előtér, mely a katedrális előtti térről és a Kungsgatan felől is megközelíthető. Kétszintes belső udvara kedélyes találkozóhely, fogadások, kiállítások rendezésére szolgál, és az emeleti irodák kilátását gazdagítja.

Itt a deszkamintázatúra zsaluzott betonfalak tömörsége áll kontrasztban a nagy üvegfelületek nyitottságával. A feltűnő auditórium a katedrális tornyainak látványát keretező trapézvonalú tölcséres ablak által egyedi tér.

Kapuzat a látogatóknak Carmen Izquierdo hozzáteszi: “Az épület érdekes, egymást követő külső és belső tereket alkot. A katedrálist látogatók fogadására szolgáló kapu, és a mélyebb tanulmányozás és megbeszélés fóruma. Az új épület egyszerű, mégis látványos nyelvezete mellett, a szomszédos épületek szögeinek és lejtőinek átültetése révén összhangban áll környezetével.

A sárgarezet választottuk külső burkolataként, mert természetes anyag, gazdag, vibráló felülettel, mely idővel nemesedik és fokozatosan beleolvad a város látképébe.” Új, fényes mivoltában az épület rámenős, és kíváncsian várja a látogatók visszajelzéseit. Az évek múlásával a sárgaréz természetéből adódóan sötétedik, ezzel is hirdeti nemes, időtlen minőségét. A látogatóközpont formája és kanyargós vonalvezetése a történelmi épületek között segített megőrizni a fontos műemléki látványt, de új távlatokat is nyit az intimebb és változatos közösségi terek létrejöttével. Elmúlt évi megnyitóján Bishop Antje Jackelén találóan “a katedrális kinyújtott ölelésének” nevezte az épületet.

Folytonosság rézzel A vidéki birtok pálmaházának átirata, a Braaksma & Roos’ építészeinek alkotása a réz használatának köszönheti fogalmi folytonosságát.

A SAS Institute Inc., megbízásából tervet dolgoztunk ki hollandiai székházukhoz. A SAS (korábban “Statistical Analysis System”) egy nagy, műemlék kúriában rendezte be központját Huizenben. A megbízáskor az épületet a korai 60-as években épült, düledező szárnybővítés csúfította. Tervünk lényege a pálmaház kortárs újrafogalmazása, mely hagyományos bővítménye a nagy vidéki rezidenciáknak. Magától értetődő kiegészítése az eredeti műemléképületnek, miközben önmaga egy teljes egészében modern épület.

Párbeszéd termett a régi és az új között Párbeszéd termett a régi és az új között. A régi épületet nagyban meghatározza a fehér vakolat és az üveg, míg az új pálmaház döntően üvegből készült, másodlagos, beltéri elemekként fehérre vakolt dobozokkal kiegészítve. A műemlék visszafogottan íves ablakfülkéinek fedéséből kiindulva az új épület tetőzetét teljes egészében rézzel borították. Előpatinázott és perforált rézlemez formázza meg a keleti homlokzaton nyíló ajtókat, mely a pálmaháznak levegősséget és áttetszőséget kölcsönöz.

Áttetsző réz

A melléképület, a réznek és az üvegnek köszönhetően áttetsző, a környező tájkép a belső terek részévé válik, miközben a fizikai elhatárolás függetlenséget biztosít a főépülettől. Ellenkező irányú áramlást a belső tér felől a kinyúló eresz vonaláig túlfuttatott kőburkolat teremt. A kövezett sávot faburkolat hosszabbítja meg, mely a deli oldalon elegendő tágasságot nyújt a kellemes terasznak.

A pálmaház földszintje főként találkozóhely és étkező.

Ezen túl egy szeparált külső és belső előadóterem, és egy tanterem is helyet kapott itt. Az emeleten két szabad elrendezésű irodateret és különálló irodákat is kialakítottak, a kiszolgálóhelyiségek a fehér kubusokba kerültek.

A pálmaház tömegének koronája, a réztető az északi oldalon felnyílik, hogy helyet adjon a szellőztető berendezéseknek.

A RÉGI ÉS AZ ÚJ

ÖSSZEFONÓDÁSA Hogyan lehet a 21. századi igényeket figyelembe véve új életet adni a régi épületeknek, az eredeti értékek megőrzésével és felemelésével? A bronzzal borított bővítmény drámai állásfoglalás, mégis ízléses átépítés – a régi és az új harmonikus összefonódása.

A kelet-londoni Roding Valleyben található Abbey Road Riverside műemlékvédelmi területen a helyi védettséget élvező magtár hosszú ideig volt gazdátlan és elhagyatott, sürgetővé vált átfogó helyreállítása és újbóli használatbavétele. 2009-ben kapott építési engedélyt Hammer Lassen (SHL) terve, mely egy új, kreatív ipari negyedet vázolt fel a volt magtár és maláta-csíráztató épületeinek bevonásával.

Finom beavatkozás Az épületegyüttes térhasználatának optimalizálására, az SHL teveinek továbbfejlesztésére a Pollard Thomas Edwards architects (PTEa) nyerte el a megbízást. A tervezés során mind a régi, mind pedig az új elemek esetében gondot fordítottak az eredeti karakter és a műemléki vonások megőrzésére. Alapos javítási és állagmegőrzési munkálatokra volt szükség, ám ezeket a lehető legvisszafogottabban, finoman beavatkozva végezték. A felújított magtár bronzborítású bővítésében kapott helyet a fejlesztő és kivitelező Rooff vállalat székhelye, illetve több más kreatív és üzleti vállalkozás. A Rooff fenntartható építési megoldásokat vezetett be, hogy a legkedvezőbb költségvetéssel a legmagasabb szintű munkakörnyezetet teremtse meg.

A bővítés formája és megjelenése nem háborítja az eredeti épü-

let történelmiségét, hangulatát a markáns nyeregtetős alak határozza meg. Az új anyagok, mint a figyelemreméltó bronz panelek a már meglévő részek ellenpontjai. A bejárat közvetlenül a két szárnyat ös�szekötő függőleges, központi közlekedési csomópontra nyílik, mely modern anyagok, szín és világítás használatával gondosan komponált ellenpontja a műemléknek. A betérő közönség számára könnyen megközelíthető, életet adó szíve az épületnek, továbbá egy magasban futó híd társaságában összekapcsolja a régi és az új részt.

A megújulás katalizátora A magtár megújulása és a látványos, bronzzal borított új bővítés része egy hosszabb felújítási terv első fázisának, és ösztönzi a további munkálatokat, a Roding folyó partjának teljes rendezését. Az egy projektben megvalósított jó tervezési és műemlékvédelmi törekvések jelzőfényeként 2011-ben elnyerte kereskedelmi kategóriában a World Architecture News Awards elnevezésű díjat.

CH: Hogyan alakult ki a prizma formájú bővítés terve?

AS: Kezdetben az SHL céggel együtt modelleztük a tömegeket és a tereket, kialakítottuk a formát a bevilágítás és a napvédelem elvei szerint.

AS: Az SHL első javaslata kortenacél volt, de azt a réz patinázódása és vízhatlansági megfontolások miatt a megbízó kérésére lecseréltük. Ezek után megvizsgáltuk a réz, a bronz és a sárgaréz lehetőségét, melyek közül végül a bronzot választottuk. A terv törekvése egy részleteiben és összképében is modern megjelenésű bővítésre irányult, mely drámai kontrasztot képez a meglévő műemlékkel, és egyben alkalmazkodik is környezetéhez a bronz, mint nagy múltú építőanyag használatával.

CH: Az anyag színének változását figyelembe vették?

AS: A patinázódás szintén kulcskérdés volt, mert a tető és a ferde fal jól látható, és az időjárásnak különbözőképp kitett, így különbözőképp is nemesedik. Megtudtuk továbbá, hogy a bronz rövid- és középtávon enyhébben és egyenletesen patinázódik.

CH: Fontosak voltak a fenntarthatósági és környezetvédelmi megfontolások?

AS: Igen, határozottan. A rézhez hasonlóan a bronznak is igaz és bizonyított fenntarthatósági erényei vannak, mindemellett kivételes tartóssága és hosszú élettartama, sőt tény, hogy gyakorlatilag nem igényel karbantartást és teljes egészében újrahasznosítható.

CH: Hogyan alakították ki a kellően részletes homlokzatburkolati tervet?

AS: Modelleztük a különböző burkolati rajzolatokat, a panelek alakját és méretét, továbbá a függőleges, a vízszintes és a ferde illesztéseket. Az épület alakja 3 dimenziós tervezést tett szükségessé, mert a tető valójában egy ferde fal. Ezek a modellek segítettek megérteni a főbb elemek, például ablakok, tetőablakok és az esőcsatornák összjátékát a változatos formájú és méretű fémpanelekkel.

CH: Mennyire elégedett a kész bronz burkolattal?

AS: Nagyon tetszik a végső megvalósítás. A bronz szépen patinásodik, az élek, ablaktokok és a síkok találkozásai részleteiken is tiszták és egyenesek. A vízszintesen futó panelek és az azokat megtörő függőleges illesztések követik az ablakok véletlenszerű kiosztását és méretezését. A panelek leheletnyi hullámzása oldja a bővítés harsogóan új megjelenését, mely a patinázódással még inkább finomodik, történelmi érzetet kelt. A különböző anyagok csatlakozásainak, az illesztések részleteinek a rézmunkák kivitelezőjével együttesen kidolgozott terve és a gondos kivitelezés megtérült az épület látványában.

Látkép rézzel

A Helsinki városközpontjában álló áruház tetőszintjének beépítése fenntartható megoldás a hiányzó irodaterületek pótlására. A nagy felületen alkalmazott előpatinázott réz burkolat révén az új tömeg szépen illeszkedik a patinazöld fedésű műemléképületekből szövődő látképbe.

Az Evli bank irodatornya új épület egy szokatlan helyszínen – a város nagy bevásárlóközpontjának tetejére épült Helsinki központjában, üzleteket és irodákat foglal magába. A bank korábban több helyszínen is megjelent a plázában, ezúttal azonban minden munkatársát egy létesítményben kívánta elhelyezni.

Azért építkeztek az áruház tetejére, mert gyakorlatilag lehetetlen a városközpontban olyan üres telket találni, melyre új irodaház építhető, továbbá így megmaradt a korábbi, megszokott címük is.

Az új, négyszintes épület az eddig kihasználatlan tetőfelületet foglalja el, mely korábban parkolóként szolgált. A határozott élekkel formált kereskedelmi létesítmény részben a

COPPER In its inspirational rural setting at the foot of Italy’s Monferrato Hills, Rocca Civalieri was the summer sanctuary of Piedmontese nobles from the late Middle Ages. The villa and its associated buildings have now been restored, adapted and drawn together by a thoroughly contemporary, copper-clad intervention which fully respects the original building fabric, to create a convention centre, hotel and spa.

A timeless skin of pre-oxidised copper is used to express the new additions, starting as a ‘rusticated’ base to the original classical villa. The horizontally stratified dark copper then develops into a new spa building which defines and divides separate external areas either side. The overall composition aims to create “a place with clearly recognizable connotations – respecting the existing architectonic and landscape values.”

As architect Stefania Masera explained: “The demands of a building complex accommodating various different functions but still presenting itself as unitary whole suggested the creation of new circulation routes on two levels leading into a new addition. This addition then defines a new, open, main entrance courtyard to the complex. It also establishes, in conjunction with existing buildings now converted to bedrooms and suites, a more intimate courtyard characterised by a central, light timber pergola structure. The copper additions draw together the diversity of buildings and their spatial organisation, creating a place with clearly recognizable connotations.”

Alterations to the original fabric have been minimised and focused on the creation of flexible spaces to meet changing needs of the complex. On the ground floor, in addition to entrance, reception and bar, there are various communal and meeting rooms. The first floor houses a conference room with a small foyer and restaurant with kitchen and staff room, and hotel rooms and suites occupy the second floor.

Copper Roofs Commissioned in 1876, the Filtry Waterworks was designed by British engineer William Lindley, who had previously gained recognition working with railways and, particularly, municipal infrastructure projects in numerous European cities. He designed the first underground sewers in continental Europe and, together with his sons, he designed systems for cities in Germany and elsewhere – including St. Petersburg, Budapest, Prague and Moscow – also turning his attention to urban planning.

At Warsaw, he created a water purification system that continued to operate until the latest regeneration work. Here, he also collaborated with the architect Julian Herde with a complex of buildings generally faced with red ceramic tiles and decorative sandstone elements. Roofs were metal sheet on structural steel and windows steel-framed. A key aspect of Filtry’s success in its urban context is the green landscape covering about 70% of the site area. This unique and historic infrastructure complex is ‘protected’ locally and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Upgrading Performance The well-loved landmark endured various changes after the 19th-century including additions in the 1970’s which took no account of the local environment and attached no importance to the original buildings’ scale and form. In the mid-1980s, restoration of the original buildings began under the current architect, Richard Sobolewski of Dorjon International, including replacement of the zinc-coated iron plate roofs with copper. Technical and performance requirements have driven the latest, recently completed new treatment building. Water quality has now been improved within modern parameters and in line with European Union standards, and the use of chlorine dioxide for water disinfection and treatment has also been substantially reduced.

he owners of this 19th century cottage in a small village north of Luxembourg decided that they would retire there. The house, as it was, had the charm of an old cottage but did not offer the required comfort for a main Photo: Paulo Lobo – Luxedit

residence. The attached barn was being used as a garage and shed and the idea was to transform this huge empty volume into a new living room with a kitchen and to alter the existing cottage as little as possible.

Various considerations influenced our design. The existing cottage has very small windows which give uninteresting views of neighbouring buildings, roofs and streets. The owners wanted views of their own property, gardens and the landscape. The existing stairs in the cottage were narrow, too steep and considered to be dangerous. It was decided that they should be replaced with wider and less steep staircases for safety and comfort.

As the cottage will now be used by older people wishing to spend the rest of their lives there, it seemed obvious to design the layout in preparation for potential future mobility issues. As a result, it was necessary to locate a kitchen, living room, office, sanitary facilities and sleeping rooms all on the ground floor of the building, whilst the cottage. From an architectural point of view, we considered it necessary to clearly define the new parts of the building and the existing 19th century building. The owners wished to retain the authenticity of the existing cottage, which was probably built between 1805 and 1820.

Moreover, there were not enough windows on the facade to allow sufficient light into the living room and they did not offer the desired views of the landscape and the property. It was therefore obvious that an extension was necessary. In accordance with the wishes of the owners, the forms of the new volumes signal a contrast between our way of living now and the way we lived some 200 years ago.

As a result, the old and the new are interrelated - yet provide a

The designers, Architektenburo Ten Hove, commented:

“We deliberately chose copper for the mesh skin, where the colour of the material naturally changes over time and therefore indicates the age of the building.” Using a grid of equilateral triangles gives freedom from the constraints of linear structures and, with the copper mesh, diffuses the box surfaces externally. But internally, the mesh screen still allows clear views to the outside while providing solar shading, and inward opening windows allow ventilation and cleaning.

Copper for house on the rock Regeneration of this 19th century London church involved an extensive refurbishment programme to return the building to its former use. But it also involved a modern extension to provide a permanent home for the growing, 3,000 or so, congregation of the Nigerian-based‚ House on the Rock‘ church, as architects Paul Davis + Partners describe.

St George’s Church in the Tufnell Park Conservation Area was built in 1867 as a historical, circular building based on a 5th Century Greek Church and modelled on Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The building has had a colourful past. Saved from demolition in 1973, actor George Murcell turned the church into the St George’s Theatre. More recently it fell into the hands of squatters and it was only when they were finally evicted in 2006 that the project was able to commence.

centre, adult learning centre, crèche and a venue for other social events. To meet these demands, a new, copper-clad extension creates a contemporary architectural solution – contrasting with the church aesthetic, yet remaining subservient to the original building and making no attempt to emulate its style. This modern 2-storey extension links the existing church and the bell tower and provides flexible multi-purpose spaces to meet the needs of both church and community. The new intervention is separated from the original fabric of the church by a continuous band of glazing.

Matching the contemporary materiality of the new building with the stone and slate of the existing church provided a welcome opportunity to explore solutions for an ever-occurring challenge. Copper, with timber cladding and glass, provided the answer with a naturally changing surface and an air of permanence. The designers endeavoured to minimise energy demand by considering the embodied energy of materials and using recycled materials wherever possible.

URBAN SHELL Architect Luisa Fontana explains how a shell-like copper and glass intervention regenerates a disused public bath house and reorientates the building to define a new urban square.

The original, early 20th century building had been unused for over 40 years and its previously hidden, undistinguished rear façade was exposed by the creation of a new public square in the 1980s. The restoration and expansion of the building provided an opportunity to redefine a new urban role. The European funded project is for a new Centre for Cultural Activities for Youth and is unique in Italy. It provides a link between the University and the World of Employment, creating an international focus to serve the local community.

A Bold Approach The regeneration – carried out in conjunction with engineers Arup (structure and energy strategies) and Manens (installation) – reflects a bold architectural and urban planning approach. It involves restoration of the original building and addition of a new volume, in the form of “shell” made of steel, copper and glass.

The result is an integrated organism, energy independent from the network, where climate and environment interact. Various renewable techniques are incorporated including geothermal energy, the pre-heating of primary air through an underground maze and self-generation of electricity using biodiesel. The design optimizes natural lighting and ventilation, while the building materials provide a high performance, thermal inertia envelope.

Shown here is a competition visual for The Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw - but how will it look in reality? You can find out in our next issue. The competition-winning design, by Architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki (working in conjunction with Kurylowic & Associates in Poland) aims to create a ‘lantern in the park’. The design features a layered facade design using pre-patinated copper in combination with glazing. The play of advanced LED lighting behind the decorated glass on the green corrugated copper will play a key role in this luminescence.

sion to a restored London warehouse (p 12–15) uses bronze cladding to define its thoroughly contemporary massing. In this case, an uncompromising form reflects the gabled profile of the original, creating a unified composition. A similar but lower key approach is taken with a London church extension (p 32–33).

The relationship of new and old linked buildings is also explored with a new country house ‘orangery’ (p 8–11) in the Netherlands. This fresh take on an old typology is a heavily glazed pavilion with a curved, green pre-patinated copper roof which bonds it with the original house.

A more literal stance is taken with Warsaw’s new water treatment plant (p 22–25) that refers strongly to the gabled forms and curved-head windows of its 19th century neighbours. Here, copper plays a more traditional role as a roofing material. And we consider the part played by copper in different forms – transparent and modulated – to regenerate uninspiring 20th century buildings (p 16–17 and p 30–31). We end as we began, with another example of a copper intervention reshaping the urban context of its older host – this time the former public baths in Thiene, Italy (p 36–38). Here, a redundant building has been given a new life as a unique youth centre defined by organic, curved copper shell additions.

We hope you enjoy this journey around these inspirational projects, where copper acts as a catalyst for inventive architectural and urban regeneration.

COPPER ARChitECtuRE

This entire issue is dedicated to the ingenuity of architects in regenerating the environments that we live and work in. Preserving and adapting existing buildings and townscapes to suit new uses is sustainable, saving on resources and making the most of assets. But it also carries with it a challenge for designers in developing their particular interpretation of history and context for the 21st century.

The diverse projects that we explore here demonstrate different approaches to this challenge and range from additions and interventions with existing structures, to new buildings interacting with the old to reshape urban areas. But one common strand runs through them all: the unique and numerous possibilities offered by copper and its alloys for architectural expression.

Our cover story ably demonstrates this. Here, brass-clad forms worm their way amongst the urban fabric, defining new vistas and a fresh focus on Lund Cathedral. Initially bright and modern, the brass surfaces will soon darken and mellow, taking on a timeless feel. The same quality applies to the pre-oxidised copper interventions to an historic Italian villa (p 18–21), redirecting axes and circulation to suit the building’s new role as a hotel.

Copper’s ageless and permanent nature is further reinforced by the brass elements added to a Spanish castle (p 34–35). Here, there is no pretence at literal reference but an abstract aesthetic totally in keeping with the massive stone remains. This approach has parallels with the use of copper to clearly express modern additions to a traditional Luxembourg village house (p 26–29). On a bigger scale, the new exten-
