NORTHERN ADRIATIC SEA WATER QUALITY FOR AQUACULTURE AND TOURISM SECTORS - CADEAU PROJECT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Municipality of Chioggia, a coastal town close to Venice, Italy, represents both an important touristic zone and a fishing port influenced by Urban Waste Water Treatment Plant (UWWTP), the Po river and the mouths of the Venice Lagoon. In order to follow the dynamic of plumes released by the latter, ISPRA and OGS, with the support of ARPA Emilia Romagna, have developed a high resolution model of the Northern Adriatic Sea using the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea reanalysis model as a boundary and initial conditions. They have performed a reanalysis simulation for the period 2006-today of the Northern Adriatic Sea, including the assimilation of UWWTP data. It allows to relate plumes released by UWWTPs and the measured quality of bathing waters. Each source of bacterial pollution is identified by a different passive tracer. An index will then be developed indicating possible bacterial pollution caused by a UWWTP on a bathing water body. It will help local administrations to better qualify bathing waters laying in their jurisdiction. It will also help many aquaculture farms and fishing port in the area. Chioggia is an important seaside town that hosts more than 1,000,000 tourists during the bathing season. In the area, there are 11 bathing zones, 8 of which are classified as excellent and 3 as good. Their profile (as defined by the Bathing Water Directive) identify river mouths and urban waste water treatment plants outflows as potential source of bacterial pollution (http://www.portaleacque.salute.gov.it). In the area (considering both the Venice and Rovigo Provincial Local Administration), there are 41 acquaculture plants. The annual production of mussels and clams adds up to 15,000 tonnes with a revenue of more than 20,000,000 euros (www.venetoagricoltura.org).

ASSESSING THE NUTRIENTS BUDGET IN PORTUGUESE COASTAL ZONES CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

MARETEC is a multidisciplinary research centre within the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Portugal. MARETEC's main activities are numerical modelling covering almost all phases of the water cycle from watershed to river, estuary and ocean (http://forecast.maretec.org/maps/). It has developed a system for assessing the nutrients budget along Portuguese coastal zones, and especially around the Tagus Estuary zone. Thanks to the MOHID water modelling system incorporating land, river discharge, estuarine and ocean models, the whole system models the river discharges that end up in the Tagus estuary and finally in the open Atlantic Ocean. The MARETEC system is downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service model in the IBI area.

Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Ramiro Neves from MARETEC says that "The Copernicus Marine Service products are a great opportunity for small groups like MARETEC that have the technological capacity to develop services at home and worldwide".

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO EMODNET SEABED HABITATS

European seabed habitat maps are important as they contain essential information about the seafloor. They serve many purposes including the design of ecologically coherent Marine Protected Area networks, assessing benthic ecosystem services, establishing monitoring programs for seabed habitats and informing maritime spatial planning. They are also indispensable for Member States to fulfil their legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, where full coverage of benthic broad-scale habitats of all European seas is required. EMODnet Seabed Habitats aims to provide a single access point to European seabed habitat data by assembling individual point datasets, maps and models from various sources and publishing them as interoperable data products for assessing the environmental state of ecosystems and sea basins. Habitats are influenced by the physical environment such as ocean currents and waves.

EMODnet Seabed Habitats uses CMEMS model ocean currents reanalysis in the Mediterranean and Black Seas as boundary conditions to higher resolution coastal models to predict values at the sea floor (using EMODnet bathymetry and substrate data).

EUSeaMap broad-scale predictive model, produced by EMODnet Seabed Habitats fulfil the EU Member States legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The extent of the mapped area includes the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and areas of the North Eastern Atlantic extending from the Canary Islands in the south to Norway in the North. The maps are produced using a top-down modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat. Habitat descriptors differ per region but include: Biological zone, Energy class, Oxygen regime, Salinity regime, Seabed Substrate and Riverine input.

SMHI-MONITORING ANOXIC EVENTS IN THE BALTIC SEA

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) monitors the inflows of oxygen in the Baltic Sea bottom layers. It is important to monitor oxygen levels to foresee anoxia events.

Anoxia refers to situations where the oxygen concentration reaches very low levels (less than 0.5 milligrams per litre according to the criterion of the US Geological Survey). Such situations result in the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), considered as a broad-spectrum poison and toxic to most biota. In the Baltic Sea, this can affect water quality, fish recruitment and even the recreational use of the sea through the development of harmful algal blooms. The water inflow through the main Öresund strait regulates the salt and oxygen transport into the Baltic Sea and hence the stratification. The unique combination of in-situ observations and numerical model results makes Copernicus Marine Service a data provider of choice for studies of inter-annual variability and the forecasting of singular events. HELCOM, the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission and EEA are end-users of such monitoring indicators.

The Baltic Sea is a unique sea area. Even though the Danish straits connect it to the Atlantic Ocean, its salinity is very low : only about one fifth of the salinity of the oceans. The Baltic Sea is also shallow (Its average depth is about 54 metres) hence very sensitive to any saline or oxygenated water intrusion. The oxygen level in water also depend on its stratification and the occurence of winter convection which breaks through stratification. Better understanding the Baltic Sea water circulation is a necessary step for its sustainable management.

Models over the European North West Shelves and the Baltic sea are used in this application. In situ measurements from buoys are also very useful to monitor such singular events.

MONITORING AND FORECASTING WATER QUALITY IN THE BAY OF MARSEILLE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The SUEZ subsidiary SERAMM and SUEZ center Rivages Pro Tech develop tools and services for real-time monitoring and forecasting of the nearshore environment for empowered decision making. Local authorities in the Marseille area in charge of bathing and coastal water quality have requested the SERAMM and Rivages Pro Tech services. Marseille is one of the largest french metropole located along the Mediterranean Sea coast, characterized by a highly touristic summer density, intense summer rainfall events, and hosting 21 official bathing zones and the Calanques National Park. SERAMM and Rivages Pro Tech have developed a real time monitoring and forecasting decision making tool in the bay of Marseille. Matthias Delpey from Rivages Pro Tech says that "Downscaling the CMEMS regional ocean dynamics model enables us to account for its impact in the Bay of Marseille area. In particular, CMEMS ocean models used as boundary conditions allow to better represent the local impact of ocean circulation features like upwelling episodes in the bay, or occasional intrusions of the Northern Mediterranean current on the shelf".

Marseille is one of the largest french metropole located along the Mediterranean Sea coast, characterized by a highly touristic summer density, intense summer rainfall events, and hosting 21 official bathing zones and the Calanques National Park. The local authorities Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropole and Ville de Marseille have hired SERAMM and Rivages Pro Tech to set up a decision making tool in order to monitor the Bay of Marseille water quality. Microbial organisms, such as bacteria and viruses in water bodies can make waters unsafe for humans and can make swimmers ill. Hence monitoring the microbial organisms in water bodies helps local authorities to protect human health.

MONITORING PARTICLES DRIFT IN THE LEVANTINE SEA

Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) is a national research institution (non-profit governmental corporation) mandated to generate knowledge for the sustainable use and protection of Israel marine, coastal and freshwater resources. IOLR has studied pollutants transport by ocean currents in the Levantine Sea, westwards from the Israeli coast. They have developed an high resolution ocean model which allows to follow coastal tracer dispersion and track filaments of pollutants along the Israeli coast.

They use the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data to check for the agreement between barriers derived from model and the Chlorophyll filament (CMEMS data) detaching from the Israeli coast.

Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land. One of the biggest sources occurs as a result of runoff. It includes many sources, like for example septic tanks, cars, trucks, boats, agriculture, engine oil. Some water pollution actually starts as air pollution, which settles into waterways and oceans. Dirt can be a pollutant. Top soil or silt from fields or construction sites can run off into waterways. High resolution coastal model help assessing the various tracer and pollutant dispersion.

"MARINE ENVIRONMENT" (http://www.marinenvironment.com/en/home#) is one of the web tools developed, which proposes a web interface for monitoring water quality in the Mediterranean. Satellite ocean colour data are displayed, with chlorophyll maps. Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea Satellite Ocean Colour data provide accurate chlorophyll maps for the Mediterranean and enable us to provide useful Water Quality information to anyone in the area.

OCEAN BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE: OCEBIS

OCEBIS is an open downstream service for the fishery industry sector. Its maps show where life conditions are best in the ocean, based on the knowledge of the different species in the ecosystem.

Such map are based on Copernicus Marine Service operational physical and biogeochemical data products. Bottom-up ecosystem drivers sets the conditions for life in the ocean. For example, frontal and mesoscale structures, spatial biological indices and marine spatial connectivity are ecosystem drivers that influence life in the ocean. With the OCEBIS service, users can customize how to visualize oceanic data and freely download data/images seen in the browser. The OCEBIS operational web service provides continuous updated real-time maps of biologically relevant data layers. Its software components are available for free download, so users can explore their own hypotheses about life conditions in the ocean. The landing value of fishery catch in the initial area of the demonstration (European North West Shelves) is roughly 1 billion Euros. It amounts to 7 billions Euros for the marine fish farming landing value. CMEMS products are currently underutilized in the fishery industry, science and management to optimize the revenue potential and sustainability of this economic sector. The OCEBIS service developed here aims at facilitating higher degree of user-uptake of this economic sector.

SUPPORTING FRANCE WITH THE EUROPEAN MARINE STRATEGY FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The European Water Framework (hereafter WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directives both require EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In France, IFREMER is one of the national agencies in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:320 10D0477(01)) in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor 5, which deals with eutrophication. Francis Gohin from IFREMER has stated that "the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as it allows us to improve coherence in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

SUPPORTING ITALY WITH THE EUROPEAN MARINE STRATEGY FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The European Water Framework (hereafter WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directives both require EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In Italy, ISPRA is one of the national agencies in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans ( http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:320 10D0477(01) ) in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor 5, which deals with eutrophication. Andrea Taramelli from ISPRA has stated that "the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as it allows us to improve coherence in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

SUPPORTING MSFD DIRECTIVE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN: THE IFADO PROJECT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The iFADO project aims to create marine services at regional and subregional scale using the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in the EU Atlantic Waters as case study. The project combines traditional monitoring with cost-effective, state-of-the-art technologies: remote sensing, numerical modelling and emerging observation platforms such us gliders and oceanic buoys. It downscales CMEMS products and combine them with gliders, ocean buoys and satellite data, to develop tailor-made and innovative services to assist the MSFD competent authorities, enhance the local and regional blue economy, optimize observing strategies and capitalise on individual partner initiatives and historical data. In order to tackle difficulties arising from the MSFD implementation, iFADO aggregate ocean information for the EU Atlantic region ensuring the comparability of assessment approaches and methods with an homogeneous transnational approach.

The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (hereafter MSFD) requires EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In Portugal, the DGRM (General-Directorate for Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services) is one of the national agencies in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise.

Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor number 5 dealing with eutrophication. Elisabete Dias from the DGRM has stated that "the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as they enable us to improve consistency in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

SUPPORT TO RECREATIONAL BEACH SANITARY RISK

Telespazio has developed a near-real time service for coastal to nearshore waters to warn users and stakeholders about water quality sanitary risk. They have developed a downscaling modeling suite where the Copernicus Marine Service model is used to provide boundary conditions for a higher resolution ocean model to monitor turbid plumes. Fed by CMEMS data, numerical models and optical imagery processing are coupled in order to improve the forecasting capacity. These tools are cross-validated

by CMEMS and local in-situ data. This service allows stakeholders to optimize preventive closure of recreational beaches in case of sanitary risk suspicion, e.g. bacterial -E. coli or coliform -contamination. In such case, the service also supports further the management of bathing water quality. In summary, it produces alerts in case of risk resulting in an efficient optimization of preventive beach closure, pollutant source identification, and finally aims to improve sewer system management. It also helps public stakeholders regarding health-care issues and limits impact on coastal zones economy, especially during the touristic summer period.

Microbial organisms, also referred to as pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses in water bodies can make waters unsafe for humans. Swimming and other recreational activities in water contaminated with pathogens can make people ill. Hence monitoring the microbial organisms in water bodies helps local authorities to protect human health.
