The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) provides reference data and information on the physical and biogeochemical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas. Products are free of charge and open to all, accessible via marine.copernicus.eu.

CHLO4MSFD: A WEB PORTAL SERVICE IN SUPPORT TO MSFD

CHLO4MSFD is a web portal service focused on satellite data to answer the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) over all European Marine Regions.

CHLO4MSFD is meant to incentivate and support MSFD actors to use chlorophyll-a values from satellites, in their monitoring and assessment processes.

CHLO4MSFD Service will help them to: - Visualize satellite chlorophyll-a data maps for all EU Marine Regions between 1997-09-01 to 2016-09-01.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) aims to achieve Good Environmental Status of the EU's marine waters by 2020.

Under the MSFD, each Member State must establish monitoring programmes to support the assessments (based on 11 selected descriptors) and the regular update of targets. At present, most monitoring programmes are based on in-situ sampling methods for coastal areas. For offshore areas, the in-situ information is usually sparse or absent. Data from EO satellites can provide suitable information for marine status assessment offshore. In particular, current ocean colour missions such as the Copernicus Sentinel-3 can support the assessment of descriptor 5.

ISWIM: BATHING WATER QUALITY MONITORING IN THE BLACK SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

iSWIM is a dynamic web-based and mobile-friendly decision support system to enhance the management, monitoring and forecasting of the bathing water quality in the Black Sea, Mamaia bay, integrating numerical models downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service Black Sea model with in-situ measured data and CMEMS remote sensing products. Taking advantage of high resolution operational modelling and web-based technologies applied to coastal areas in the Black Sea and other regions in the world, the operational implementation of iSWIM provides i) Increased situational awareness in terms of bathing water now and in the future; ii) Increase of safety, environmental and public health performance in beaches and recreational waters; and iii) Valuable, accurate water quality and marine weather information, needed to promote safer recreational activities in bathing waters.

Mamaia along the Black Sea coast is the largest touristic seaside resort of Romania. Mamaia beach is one of the most famous beaches of the Romanian Black Sea. Monitoring potential impact on its environment require mitigation measures: local and regional water quality changes due to direct physical, chemical and biological disturbances need to be monitored. iSWIM is focused on the Bay of Mamaia and is based on an operational system (since April 2016) implemented by NIMRD/ACTION MODULERS.

OCEAN NOISE MAPPING IN SUPPORT TO EU AND INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The adoption of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic products and services. Quonops© Online Services, by Quiet-Oceans, provides noise monitoring and prediction tools. It produces an estimate of the spatio-temporal distribution of noise levels generated by human activities at sea and assesses source contributions to the global noise field. It provides for example real time noise and monthly statistical noise maps from shipping. It also allows mapping scenarios of noisy activities at sea to predict their impacts. The outputs are tailored to the requirements of regulations such as the EU MSFD directive. Based on physical acoustic propagation models, Quonops© considers the reality of the area through input data gathered from numerous sources. In particular, the Copernicus Marine Service temperature, salinity and surface roughness products are used to accurately compute the sound propagation and natural noise levels. The adoption of the Marine Directive which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic. Attention has been raised on the topic of underwater noise and its effects on marine life. Yet, the effects of underwater noise are not fully understood. Some underwater noise can be heard by marine life over hundreds of kilometers.

AquaMar, an FP7 research project (2009-2013), is the R&D branch of MarCoast and provides Earth Observation (EO) based water quality services to support European and national monitoring agencies and industries operating in coastal waters. It develops water quality downstream services supporting the EU Water Framework Directive, monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), marine coastal infrastructure projects, aquaculture precision farming and bathing waters quality. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour satellite data are used by the MarCoast Ocean Colour Data service to provide value-added services to the public sector organisations responsible for implementing policies at European, national and regional levels.

The aim of the European Union's ambitious Marine Strategy Framework Directive is to protect more effectively the marine environment across Europe. It came into force on June 2008 and was transposed into each member's state national legislation by mid 2010. It is the first EU legislative instrument related to the protection of marine biodiversity and aims to protect the resource base upon which marine-related economic and social activities depend.

SUPPORTING THE MSFD DIRECTIVE IN THE BLACK SEA

Marine modelling at the Joint Research Centre, Directorate General (JRC) provides a tool to examine the present and future state of the marine ecosystem and can inform and support a variety of EU policies including the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The Black Sea has suffered from severe ecological degradation since the 1970s. The aim of the EU-MC SIMSEA project (2015-06 to 2017-06) was to implement an advanced ecosystem model to simulate the complex Black Sea ecosystem.

This model is based on the validated JRC hydrodynamic model to generate future scenario simulations considering different policy options and climate change scenarios. Numerous hindcast runs of the Black Sea hydrodynamic model (Miladinova et al., 2017) have been performed to distinguish possible climate change trends for the Black Sea environment. Long-term evolution of the Black Sea thermohaline properties is simulated. Changes in basin-scale and mesoscale circulations are shown to be an important factor for the surface salinity variation. Copernicus Marine Service reanalysed thermohaline fields from 2005 to 2015 are used as independent results for intercomparison.

The Black Sea has suffered from severe ecological degradation since the 1970s due to concurrent effects of intense eutrophication, overfishing, outburst of gelatinous carnivores and natural climatic variations. The main purpose of the SIMSEA project was therefore to implement an advanced ecosystem model for the complex Black Sea ecosystem based on the validated JRC hydrodynamic model to generate future scenario simulations considering different policy options and climate change scenarios.

Monthly mean temperature and salinity, chlorophyll_a, nitrate and phosphate fields are extracted from the Copernicus Marine Service Black Sea reanalysis model. Satellite sea surface temperature and ocean colour data in the Black Sea are also used.

WISE-MARINE: A PLATFORM IN SUPPORT TO MSFD

WISE-Marine is a portal and infrastructure for sharing information with the marine community on the marine environment at European level. Focusing on the state of the marine environment at the European scale, WISE Marine shows the information and knowledge gathered or derived through the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) process and other key marine policy drivers. It is developed in a partnership among Commission services (DG-ENV, DG-JRC), the European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eurostat. WISE-Marine presents available data related to the implementation of the MSFD in European Seas. WISE-Marine has developed a GIS map viewer https://maps.eea.europa.eu/wab/wise-marine-map/ displaying different layers originating from various sources, among which salinity and Chlorophyll-A from the Copernicus Marine Service. In the WISE-Marine map viewer, key topics can be explored and visualized spatially.This comprehensive knowledge base about the ocean is essential to support European marine policies and ocean governance.

Recognising both the ecological and economic importance of European seas, the EU has put in place a range of policies and measures, related to planning and regulating the sustainable use of European seas covering a number of activities such as fisheries, offshore energy production, and protection of marine biodiversity.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive, adopted in 2008, aims to ensure coherence between such EU policies and sets three goals for European seas: to be productive, healthy, and clean.

These efforts are also aligned with the EU's Blue Growth agenda.

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO COPERNICUS MARITIME SURVEILLANCE SERVICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is the Entrusted Entity responsible for delivering the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance service (CMS), in the framework of the Copernicus Security Service. The service is free of charge for authorized users performing operations in the maritime domain. The CMS function areas include: supporting the fisheries control activities, maritime safety and security, law enforcement, customs activities, marine environment monitoring (pollution) and other operations linked to anti-piracy and defense. EMSA delivers the CMS service via a dedicated web-based interface - Integrated Maritime Service (IMS). The IMS integrates a wide range of maritime data from various sources including ship reporting systems and ancillary meteo-oceanographic data from CMEMS, EMODNET and ECMWF. Various parameters such as sea surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents and sea surface height from CMEMS ocean model, including 10-day forecast, are ingested into the IMS tool. The integration of these data sets boosts the usage of the interface and assists the CMS users in assessing a more complete maritime surface picture.

The value-added products (i.e. Vessel detection, Activity detection as well as Wind and Wave Information) available through the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service allow to reach large user communities ranging from fisheries control, law enforcement, maritime safety and security, customs, marine pollution monitoring and other international organisations.

CMEMS satellite observations and model products are integrated in EMSA's systems. The model products provide a 10-day forecast of global ocean currents, sea surface temperature and height, updated daily. The satellite observations provide chlorophyll concentration, sea surface temperature and sea ice maps in global and regional coverages.

IMPROVING SONAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENCE VESSELS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) under the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) are collaborating in order to improve underwater sonar communications between the Dutch Ministry of Defence?s sea-going vessels. The performance of a given sonar is critical for self protection. DMO and TNO have developed a sonar performance model, the most complex aspect of which by far is the propagation of sound in the ocean. Such models need to take into account the refraction of sound due to oceanic temperature and salinity variation in the water column, the reflection of sound at the surface, the influence of roughness (wave spectrum, wind speed, sea surface temperature) and bubble content at the surface, as well as the reflection of sound at the seabed. The DMO and TNO use the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Global models as an input source for ocean density (temperature and salinity) in their sonar performance model. Gert Vlaming from DMO says that "we also soon expect to use the wave products from the Copernicus Marine Service".

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO EMODNET SEABED HABITATS

European seabed habitat maps are important as they contain essential information about the seafloor. They serve many purposes including the design of ecologically coherent Marine Protected Area networks, assessing benthic ecosystem services, establishing monitoring programs for seabed habitats and informing maritime spatial planning. They are also indispensable for Member States to fulfil their legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, where full coverage of benthic broad-scale habitats of all European seas is required. EMODnet Seabed Habitats aims to provide a single access point to European seabed habitat data by assembling individual point datasets, maps and models from various sources and publishing them as interoperable data products for assessing the environmental state of ecosystems and sea basins. Habitats are influenced by the physical environment such as ocean currents and waves.

EMODnet Seabed Habitats uses CMEMS model ocean currents reanalysis in the Mediterranean and Black Seas as boundary conditions to higher resolution coastal models to predict values at the sea floor (using EMODnet bathymetry and substrate data).

The extent of the mapped area includes the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and areas of the North Eastern Atlantic extending from the Canary Islands in the south to Norway in the North. The maps are produced using a top-down modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat. Habitat descriptors differ per region but include: Biological zone, Energy class, Oxygen regime, Salinity regime, Seabed Substrate and Riverine input.

EMODnet Seabed Habitats uses CMEMS model ocean currents reanalysis over the last 20 years in the Mediterranean and Black Seas and used them as boundary conditions to higher resolution coastal models to predict values at the sea floor.

SKYFISH: WATER QUALITY MONITORING TOOL

SkyFISH service informs users on the availability of the fish resources and the sustainability of these resources in the Black Sea. This service is targeting the aquaculture, fishery, coastal management and conservation activities in the public and private sectors. The main objective of this service is to develop a user-friendly platform based mainly on satellite derived and modeled information, suitable for identification of the most favourable fishing and aquaculture areas in the Black Sea Romanian coastal waters. The SkyFISH platform is a web-based service that can be used by the end-users as a decision support tool for finding the most favorable fishing zones or analyze the suitability of specific areas for aquaculture activities and monitoring of the existing ones. It takes full advantage of the multiple Earth Observation resources available through Copernicus Marine and its oceanic parameters.

Before the implementation of the SkyFISH platform, there were no similar tools for the Black Sea area available. Fisheries and aquaculture involved stakeholders can now use SkyFISH in order to better plan their fishing campaigns or to precisely assess the potential of specific zones for mussel farms development.

SUPPORTING SHIP ROUTING IN THE BLACK SEA

Members of the academic staff and students from "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati (UDJG), Romania, are involved in research activities related with the Black Sea marine environment and maritime transportation. The Danube River and its connection with the Black Sea is the subject of one of the main research topics which focus on the sea state conditions at the mouths of the river and in the Black Sea basin. A 15-year high resolution data base of the sea state conditions in the Black Sea was developed in the framework of DAMWAVE project (http://www.im.ugal.ro/DAMWAVE/index_engleza.htm).

Copernicus Marine Service altimeter measurements of the significant wave height were used to improve the predictions of a wave modelling system implemented in the Black Sea by means of the data assimilation methods. Based on the wave model results, various studies regarding the assessment of the wave climate in the Black Sea were performed with the objective to help the maritime navigation, offshore activities, etc. The Copernicus Marine Service significant wave height satellite data are assimilated into the DAMWAVE Black Sea wave model to improve wave prediction.

One of the key factors in the maritime navigation is the knowledge of the areas that are the most affected by extreme events. Based on the information available from the DAMWAVE project, several studies were further performed to identify the areas where storms are the most frequently encountered in order to better choose maritime routes.
