The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) provides reference data and information on the physical and biogeochemical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas. Products are free of charge and open to all, accessible via marine.copernicus.eu.

HOW CAN ONE SURVIVE ON PACIFIC ATOLLS?

The Danish publishing firm Lindhardt and Ringhof Education publishes scientific schoolbooks for high schools in Denmark, among which a physical geography book called GEOdetective: The authors of the book use the Copernicus Marine Service image displaying the regional mean sea level trends in the second chapter of their book. This image showcases that sea level has been rising up to 10 millimeters (i.e. 1 cm) around some of the Pacific islands during the time period 1993-2017. In this chapter the authors examine the question: How can one survive on pacific atolls? The GEOdetective book contains 8 courses built around real-life issues involving exercises, experiments, field trips and field work. The teaching model used in the book puts a case at the center, from which students analyze the problem from different angles. A natural red thread arises allowing the student to formulate a qualified answer. The book's course is based on questions among which 3 are related to the ocean: How can one survive on Pacific atolls? What happens when the ice melts? Why are plastic islands formed in the oceans?

Sea level rises on average over the globe of 1.2 mm per year. This trend has been estimated from 2005 to 2016, over the ocean depth layer 0-2000 meters. The uncertainty associated to this figure is of ± 0.2 mm/year. Sea level rise can seriously effect human populations in coastal and island regions and natural environments like marine ecosystems. Global mean and regional sea level is affected by natural climate variability, as well as by human-induced changes. Because of ocean warming and land ice mass loss, the sea level rises. Water expands when heated and about 30% of contemporary sea level rise can be attributed to this thermal expansion (i.e. thermosteric sea level).

Ocean Monitoring Indicators (OMIs) are used in this application.

OMI are free downloadable trends and data sets covering the past quarter of a century. These are key variables used to track the vital health signs of the ocean and changes in line with climate change.

The GEOdetective book can be used by teachers in the organization of teaching at both C and B level, so that a good progression in working methods, professional requirements and independence in the work process is ensured.

COMBATING MARINE LITTER POLLUTION

The 7th Continent Expedition aims to build up awareness amongst general public, students as well as local industry and political stakeholders about the devastating impact of plastic waste dispersion in the ocean. Having studied plastic waste dispersion and accumulation in the ocean, the organisation strongly believes that public awareness and mobilisation must go hand-in-hand with research in order to put an end to this type of pollution. According to Patrick Deixonne, 7th Continent Expedition founder -We must all spread awareness about our impact on the ocean. Alexandra Ter Halle, CNRS chief scientist of the 7th Continent Expedition testifies that "Plastic debris is fragmented into tiny pieces (less than a millimetre) and is responsible for animal entanglement and the transport of invasive species and chemicals. CMEMS ocean model currents and sea level satellite maps allow us to locate plastic debris trapped in oceanic eddy structures, in order to sample and study its fragmentation".

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. Plastic has many attractive qualities which have led to an over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials have ultimately become waste with staying power. Plastic litter has become a large source of pollution, lethal to nature. The annual plastic production has increased globally of + 620% in the last 70 years. During year 2014, 311 million metrics tons of plastic were produced. In 2015, 5 to 13 million metric tons of plastic waste were available to enter into the ocean, through river discharge mainly.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide with 7-day forecast of 3D ocean currents updated daily relevant to find plastic convergence zones in the oceans.The global Ocean satellite sea level anomaly maps in real time and in the past are also used to find plastic convergence zones. It merges data from several satellites among which Sentinel-3.

MAPPING THE ARCTIC LANDSCAPE

ArkGIS (Arctic Geographical Information System) is a free, interactive mapping platform developed by experts of WWF Norway (WorldWilde Fund for Nature) that combines and integrates existing data about the environment and human activity in the Arctic. It aims at identifying, compiling and representing data on nature conservation interest in the Arctic. The ArkGIS web-platform enables any user to download data-based maps and videos, and to develop customized maps on ones own, using an interactive map service. ArkGIS has integrated sea ice thickness analysis and forecast from the Copernicus Marine Service in their map called Ice Conditions and Polar Class requirements under IACS. This is useful for a better understanding of the general status of the ice in the Arctic as well as understanding requirement for ships in the arctic, under the polar class requirements.

Ice melting, Arctic gold rush, increased shipping activities have transformed the Arctic ocean into a hot topic in public debate.

WWF and ArkGIS seeks to bridge the knowledge gap in the Arctic Ocean between outpacing commercial development and knowledge based regulation. It brings together on the same GIS tool information about bthe Artcic animal species (polar bears for examples), shipping traffic density, local cultural and cultual information, oil and gas activities as well as environmental ecosystems and sea ice information. Data are originating from various data bases.

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS FOR SURFERS

MeteoSurf is a free multi-source weather forecasting App designed to provide wind and wave conditions of the Mediterranean Sea. It is an application for smartphones and tablets, built as a Progressive Web App able to supply detailed and updated maps and data showing heights of sea waves in the Central Mediterranean. It is mainly targeted for surfers and wind-surfers. Data can be displayed as animated graphical maps, or as detailed table data. The maps refer to the whole Mediterranean Sea, while the table data is able to provide specific information for any of the major surf spots in the Med Sea. MeteoSurf shows data collected from 3 different forecasting system sources among which the Copernicus Marine Service ocean forecast model. Met-Oceanic conditions are available in the following locations: Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey. Once the surfing spot has been selected, data will be prompted in a table listing the forecast for wave height, wave direction, wind speed and wind direction.

Adventure tourism has been developing tremendously over the past few decades, becoming a constantly growing segment of the broad tourism market. Capacity of the surf industry is large: over 10 million surfers worldwide, increasing at 12%-16% per annum.

Information about met-oceanic conditions is mandatory for their safety. Surfers constantly watch the weather as it is bound to change in an instant and they don't want to be stuck way out when a big lightning storm comes through.

Results come from two different Scientific Services: 1) The EU Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), which provides regular and systematic reference information on the ocean state for the global ocean and the European regional seas, and 2) The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System (GFS) Atmospheric Model.
