ADDRESSING MARINE POLLUTION FROM OIL SPILLS WITH EFFECTIVE DISPERSION MODELLING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

As part of the UKSA funded EASOS project, Riskaware has developed an oil spill dispersion model to help the Malaysian government tackle marine pollution. Pollution from oil spills is a major issue for the Malaysian government, who are responsible for monitoring and policing the Malacca Straits, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The Riskaware's model supports informed decision making by predicting the areas which will be affected when an oil spill is reported. Mitigation strategies can also be simulated to assess the best course of action, and there is a source estimation capability to help identify ships who choose to pollute deliberately. Using the Copernicus Marine Service high quality global forecasts, Riskaware have been able to extend their capability beyond Malaysia to model oil spills anywhere in the world, allowing many other countries to potentially benefit from the service.

Riskaware's oil dispersion model capability includes a web-based user interface which brings to together the reporting of oil spills and the model results. Through the interface, users now have a centralised system for viewing all current and historic oil spill incidents. It is possible to view the predicted concentration levels of oil both in the water and on the coast. The source estimation capability makes use of the latest Bayesian mathematics techniques to identify potential sources where the oil could have originated. A trial of the model is expected to start in Malaysia shortly.

CMEMS Forecast model products provide the oil dispersion model with a 7-day forecast of 3D ocean currents, wave height and sea temperature that is updated daily. The model uses all this data to predict how a reported oil slick will disperse. The global coverage of these forecasts allow the dispersion model to be used all over the world.

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO EMODNET SEABED HABITATS

European seabed habitat maps are important as they contain essential information about the seafloor. They serve many purposes including the design of ecologically coherent Marine Protected Area networks, assessing benthic ecosystem services, establishing monitoring programs for seabed habitats and informing maritime spatial planning. They are also indispensable for Member States to fulfil their legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, where full coverage of benthic broad-scale habitats of all European seas is required. EMODnet Seabed Habitats aims to provide a single access point to European seabed habitat data by assembling individual point datasets, maps and models from various sources and publishing them as interoperable data products for assessing the environmental state of ecosystems and sea basins. Habitats are influenced by the physical environment such as ocean currents and waves.

EUSeaMap broad-scale predictive model, produced by EMODnet Seabed Habitats fulfil the EU Member States legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The extent of the mapped area includes the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and areas of the North Eastern Atlantic extending from the Canary Islands in the south to Norway in the North. The maps are produced using a top-down modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat. Habitat descriptors differ per region but include: Biological zone, Energy class, Oxygen regime, Salinity regime, Seabed Substrate and Riverine input.

COASTAL APPLICATIONS USING THE SCOTTISH SHELF MODEL CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Scottish Shelf Model (SSM) gives a detailed spatial picture of the physical water properties, unobtainable from observation alone. It is a resource that has already been shown to help government and commercial users better plan and protect Scottish Marine Waters. The SSM is a Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) of Scottish continental shelf waters, nested into Copernicus Marine products. Marine Scotland Science (MSS) are continuing to develop this system and integrate it with their existing FVCOM models. The model covers the Scottish continental shelf at relatively high resolution (up to 1 km node spacing at the coastline) but also covers most of UK waters, the North Sea and the English Channel. The domain extends in latitude from approximately 13° W to 13° E, including the Baltic Sea. In addition to this large domain Scottish Shelf Model, a number of smaller domain sub-models have been developed, covering areas of interest to specific socio-economic sectors such as aquaculture and marine renewable energy. These sub-models have a higher spatial resolution, necessary to adequately understand the complex physical processes within the area.

The SSM is a shared resource for the marine science community.

Developments will include the implementation of new high resolution sub-models, new hindcasts, forecast and climatological runs. The model has been used to provide resources for aquaculture, marine renewables and other marine scientists and policy makers, including tidal and wave energy resource maps; connectivity indices between aquaculture finfish farm management areas, and of Marine Protected Areas and Priority Marine Features; the environmental impact of tidal stream energy extraction and other renewable energy technologies.

GREENLAND COMMUNITY ICE INFORMATION SERVICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

For northern communities, the ability to move safely over ice is an essential part of culture, community and livelihood for travel, food, and tourism. The challenge of travelling on ice is compounded by the changing climate. The Greenland community ice information service provides Inuit hunters, tourism operators, local communities, and search and rescue operators with Earth Observation (EO)-based information that helps them to navigate safely over the sea ice in coastal waters. The first demonstration was held in the community of Qaanaaq, Greenland. The service is now being extended to all Greenland communities.

As part of the service, Sentinel 1 satellite imagery is analyzed by an expert to determine the ice conditions around the community.

Local maps are created delineating conditions suitable for travel as. The satellite imagery and travel maps are combined with Copernicus Marine Service data such as: sea ice fraction and snow thickness. These data layers are available to users through a web site and a mobile phone app.

Although deaths are rare, the search and rescue effort required to retrieve stranded individuals is costly in both time and money, as well as endangering the rescuers. As an example in the Canadian context, in 2013 the extraction of 31 people (including a 16-person Inuit hunting party) turned out to be one of the largest Arctic rescues that the Royal Canadian Air Force has ever undertaken.

Over a two-day period, the rescue involved three dozen aircrew and six aircraft in co-operation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and local authorities, turning into a major news story that was reported around the world. The rescue operation also cost Canadian taxpayers $2.7 million.

LOCATING THE CLOSEST LEGAL FISHING GROUND

HeraSpace helps fishermen to locate the closest legal fishing ground, optimizing their operative budgets. HeraSpace is a multi winning award British startup which has showcased a unique tracking fish distributions system. HeraSpace uses oceanographic data among which Copernicus satellite and Copernicus Marine Service global ocean model, crowd-sourcing and a top-notch neural machine learning neural network. HeraSpace adapts to the variabilities in the fish distributional patterns (provoked by anomalies in the climate) by applying accurate updated ocean friendly patterns and artificial intelligence. HeraSpace proposes building an adaptive intelligent service based on the latest publically funded satellite missions which shall result in optimizing resources consumption and as a consequence reducing the greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. HeraSpace supports sustainable fisheries management practices and the recovery of fish stocks. Transparency thought the whole process is guaranteed with blockchain technology, the same that is used for cutting-edge electronic currency like Bitcoin.

Combining Copernicus satellite data with actual fishing data, fishing routes and selection could eventually be drastically improved. Particularly interesting are the features aimed at supporting sustainable exploitation of ocean resources.

MARINE SCOTLAND OIL SPILL RESPONSE

In Northern Scotland harbor, ship-to-ship oil transfer have historically taken place at the jetties of Nigg oil terminal in the Cromarty Firth. Therefore an oil spill planning and response capability is required. A trajectory model based on 2D Lagrangian particle tracking software in order to simply tracking virtual oil particles was used to study the potential consequences of a spill.

An oil spill modelling capability for Scotland is possible due to both the use of direct application of Copernicus Marine Service model products in the European North West Shelves seas, and through nested capability for coastal hotsposts. In an enclosed area like the inner Moray Firth, an oil spill could easily influence the coastline. Marine Scotland use ocean currents from the Copernicus Marine Service or from the Scottish Shelf Model (forced using CMEMS NWS data) in the Scottish Government GNOME oil spill trajectory model. There is also trial capability for higher resolution response capability using coastal Finite Volume Community Ocean Models (FVCOM). The model was forced using the Scottish Shelf Model, an FVCOM model itself forced using Copernicus Marine Service model.

MONITORING TRENDS IN BIOGEOCHEMICAL INDICATORS TO SUPPORT MARINE POLICIES CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Monitoring trends in biogeochemical indicators such as chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations is crucial for evaluating the ocean response to global climate change. Researchers from PML have integrated the CMEMS satellite-derived data with a coupled physical-biogeochemical model using a method that constrains the output to fit the observations. This results into a biogeochemistry reanalysis which provides a unique decadal data set that has considerable skill in approximating ocean observations, and that can enhance the understanding and management for marine policies of the North West European shelf ecosystem, in relation to eutrophication and fluctuations of the carbon cycle. Results show for example that an area as large as 325,000 km2 is vulnerable to oxygen deficiency at the bottom of the North West European shelf, and an additional 40,000 km2 are included when using a strict 1% confidence criteria.

It also shows that the North West European shelf is a net sink of atmospheric CO2, with a simulated uptake that ranges between 36 and 46 Tg C yr-1, when applying a 90% confidence level for the estimates.

Monitoring trends in biogeochemical indicators such as chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations is crucial for evaluating the ocean response to global climate change and its effects on marine ecosystems. Trends and patterns of biogeochemical variables that are relevant for marine policy and ecosystem understanding can be evaluated by merging numerical models and ocean color in extended biogeochemical reanalysis using a consistent data assimilation algorithm. Results from the first decade-long reanalysis simulation of northwest European shelf biogeochemistry show the importance of quantifying the uncertainty in these indicators to inform marine policy.

SEASONAL FORECASTING AT ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. The ocean data assimilation system is a crucial component of ECMWF Earth system approach. It produces both real-time and reanalysed ocean states and it relies on the assimilation of conventional and satellite observations. In particular, radar altimeter sea-level anomaly (SLA) data assimilation improves the representation of the seasonal and inter-annual variability of sea level, which is important for extended to seasonal range weather forecasts. In February 2017, ECMWF has concluded an agreement with the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) which formalises the terms under which CMEMS provides the Centre with its satellite sea-level anomaly products for ocean data assimilation into ECMWF system.

El Niño is the main source of predictability for year-to-year climate variations and is closely studied by ECMWF and its seasonal forecast experts. The El Niño acts to redistribute heat and precipitation over the globe. It bestows beneficial effects on economies as well as negative effects. In the United States, for example, researchers have estimated that the 1997-1998 El Niño pattern inflicted costs of approximately $4 billion, but was offset by $19 billion in benefits. Many other countries have endured an economical deficit only.

PolarView is an online downstream service useful to the general public in Greenland and also to professionals, to visualize Copernicus ice-related data in Polar regions (Satellite observation and Forecast Models). The PolarView consortium includes government agencies (such as DMI in Denmark), research institutes, system developers, service providers and end users from 17 countries. Polarview uses the Copernicus Marine Service Satellite sea-ice products and ocean currents from the Arctic ocean forecast model and provides a very simple user interface (click on an area, click on a thumbnail and see the latest images).

Avoiding rough weather and having the best possible advance route planning can minimise cargo damage and mean more precise arrival times.

Choosing the optimum route also lays the foundation for reducing fuel consumption.

RESOURCE ASSESSMENT FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY

Salinity gradient power is the energy available from the difference in the salt concentration between seawater and river water. Such high salinity gradients are usually located at the mouth of main rivers and can result in the production of electrity. Europe is a pioneer in this new type of marine renewable energy prototype.

Salinity gradient resource characterization in the global ocean is critical for both renewable energy project developers and policy makers alike. It allows the industry to identify the right markets and sites to install ocean energy technologies, and informs decision makers for a more relevant energy policy and better marine spatial planning. The University of Edinburgh made significant contributions to improving knowledge of salinity gradient resources. Pr. Medina-Lopez from University of Edinburgh uses Sentinel-2 satellite data, in situ measurements and machine learning techniques (neural nodes) to produce high resolution maps of sea surface salinity and sea surface temperature at the mouth of main rivers in the global ocean. She uses the Copernicus Marine in situ products at regional and global scales.

Reverse electrodialysis also called osmotic power or salinity gradient power is the energy available from the difference in the salt concentration between seawater and river water. The chemical potential difference between salt and fresh water generates a voltage over a set of membranes and results in the production of electrity. Europe is a pioneer in salinity gradient energy research and development. A state-of-the-art Reverse Electro Dialysis test unit has been deployed as early as 2014 in the Netherlands.
