MARINE SCOTLAND OIL SPILL RESPONSE

In Northern Scotland harbor, ship-to-ship oil transfer have historically taken place at the jetties of Nigg oil terminal in the Cromarty Firth. Therefore an oil spill planning and response capability is required. A trajectory model based on 2D Lagrangian particle tracking software in order to simply tracking virtual oil particles was used to study the potential consequences of a spill.

An oil spill modelling capability for Scotland is possible due to both the use of direct application of Copernicus Marine Service model products in the European North West Shelves seas, and through nested capability for coastal hotsposts. In an enclosed area like the inner Moray Firth, an oil spill could easily influence the coastline. Marine Scotland use ocean currents from the Copernicus Marine Service or from the Scottish Shelf Model (forced using CMEMS NWS data) in the Scottish Government GNOME oil spill trajectory model. There is also trial capability for higher resolution response capability using coastal Finite Volume Community Ocean Models (FVCOM). The model was forced using the Scottish Shelf Model, an FVCOM model itself forced using Copernicus Marine Service model.

Oil spills can have disastrous consequences and as a result, oil spill accidents have initiated intense attention. Appropriate and rapid oil spill response and monitoring is critical in ensuring the impacts due to oil spills is limited. Oil and gas are a significant part of the economy and so oil spill response capability is an important issue in Scotland.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide reanalysis, analysis and forecast of 3D ocean currents, temperature and salinity, and sea surface height, for use as boundary conditions from the European North West Shelves product. MSS require instant access to these forecast products as and when they are required, i.e. in the event of a real oil spill.

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO COPERNICUS MARITIME SURVEILLANCE SERVICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is the Entrusted Entity responsible for delivering the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance service (CMS), in the framework of the Copernicus Security Service. The service is free of charge for authorized users performing operations in the maritime domain. The CMS function areas include: supporting the fisheries control activities, maritime safety and security, law enforcement, customs activities, marine environment monitoring (pollution) and other operations linked to anti-piracy and defense. EMSA delivers the CMS service via a dedicated web-based interface - Integrated Maritime Service (IMS). The IMS integrates a wide range of maritime data from various sources including ship reporting systems and ancillary meteo-oceanographic data from CMEMS, EMODNET and ECMWF. Various parameters such as sea surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents and sea surface height from CMEMS ocean model, including 10-day forecast, are ingested into the IMS tool. The integration of these data sets boosts the usage of the interface and assists the CMS users in assessing a more complete maritime surface picture.

The value-added products (i.e. Vessel detection, Activity detection as well as Wind and Wave Information) available through the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service allow to reach large user communities ranging from fisheries control, law enforcement, maritime safety and security, customs, marine pollution monitoring and other international organisations.

CMEMS satellite observations and model products are integrated in EMSA's systems. CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO FRENCH HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

SHOM is the French Hydrographic Office. SHOM supports the French Navy and Government with what concerns maritime knowledge and coastal policies. SHOM develops coastal ocean models. Its coastal service aims at delivering high resolution ocean forecasts in French coastal areas to answer the growing needs from public marine policies and sea users either public or private.

SHOM uses the dynamical downscaling method to obtain high resolution coastal models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. SHOM uses many products from the Copernicus Marine Service 1) as initial and boundary conditions to its coastal model, 2) for data assimilation of satellite temperature and sea level in its coastal model, and finally 3) for its coastal models validation and qualification. SHOM has also developed an innovative online platform as a service called DataShom to distribute SHOM & Météo-France marine coastal forecasts and derived products. Users access 4 day forecasts on key parameters (atmospheric pressure, wind, waves, storm surge, currents, temperature and salinity of the sea water) for navigation and marine activities.

The Shom coastal oceanographic forecast service aims at delivering high resolution forecasts of the ocean state in French coastal areas that will answer the growing needs coming from public marine policies and sea users either public or private : maritime safety, natural coastal hazards, fisheries, seabed mining, pollution, marine energy, tourism, nautical events. Uses could also be far more diverse in transverse applications like radioactive contamination, epidemiology, police investigation and urban planning. The service is expected to support from 500 to 1000 users per day.

SUPPORT TO HARMFUL NOXIOUS SUBSTANCES MONITORING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

A decision-support tool has been developed for the North Sea that national maritime authorities and coastguard stations will activate in order to forecast the drift, fate and behaviour of acute marine pollution by Harmful Noxious Substances (HNS) accidentally released in the marine system. The tool called HNS-MS aims at developing a one-stop shop integrated HNS decision-support tool that is able to predict the drift, fate and behaviour of HNS spills under realistic environmental conditions and at providing key product information - drawing upon and in complement to existing studies and databases - to improve the understanding and evaluation of a HNS spill situation in the field and the environmental and safety-related issues at stake. The 3D HNS drift and fate model and decision-support tool will also be useful at the preparedness stage, e.g. for HNS risk assessment studies, to improve the HNS behaviour and impact assessment and for training purposes. This tool is funded by DG-ECHO under agreement ECHO/SUB/2014/693705. It uses the CMEMS NWS phycical hourly 3D forecast as met-ocean forcing at its boundary conditions.

When dealing with a HNS pollution incident, one of the priority requirements is the identification of the hazard and an assessment of the risk posed to the public and responder safety, the environment and socioeconomic assets upon which a state or coastal community depend. The primary factors which determine the safety, environmental and socioeconomic impact of the released substance(s) relate to their physico-chemical properties and physical fate in the environment. Until now, only few decision-support tools integrate 3D models that are able to simulate the drift, fate and behaviour of HNS spills in the marine environment.

OSERIT OIL SPILL MODEL IN SUPPORT TO EMSA

OSERIT is a 24/7 accessible support tool for evaluation of oil spill in the North Sea in support to EMSA. It is used by the Belgium Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM, now Royal Belgian Institute Natural Sciences RBINS), by Coast Guard Centres and other governmental authorities. The OSERIT service works on 2 stages: 1) A 3-day long simulation both forward and backward in time is automatically performed for each oil spill reported by EMSA CleanSeaNet service and provides coastguards a preliminary evaluation. 2) Coastguard operators also have the opportunity to refine the basic assumption and get access to more reliable simulation results. OSERIT was funded by the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO) through the contract SD/NS/10A. OSERIT provides a well-established 3D oil spill drift and fate model in North Sea and contributes to the forecast service of EMSA CleanSeaNet. The user-friendly interface allows to obtain quick simulation of the spill drift. OSERIT model uses Copernicus Marine Service European North West Shelves model as a forcing at its boundary conditions.

In December 2013 the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences (RBINS) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop and operate an operational service that will compute backward and forward trajectories of oil spills detected in North Sea and allow their visualisation in EMSA CleanSeaNet, the Near Real Time European satellite based oil spill monitoring and vessel detection service.

When using the oil model interface, a simulation will be generated in near-real time that contains either (1) a forecasting of the drift or (2) a backtracking of the drift.

IMPROVING SONAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENCE VESSELS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) under the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) are collaborating in order to improve underwater sonar communications between the Dutch Ministry of Defence?s sea-going vessels. The performance of a given sonar is critical for self protection. DMO and TNO have developed a sonar performance model, the most complex aspect of which by far is the propagation of sound in the ocean. Such models need to take into account the refraction of sound due to oceanic temperature and salinity variation in the water column, the reflection of sound at the surface, the influence of roughness (wave spectrum, wind speed, sea surface temperature) and bubble content at the surface, as well as the reflection of sound at the seabed. The DMO and TNO use the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Global models as an input source for ocean density (temperature and salinity) in their sonar performance model. Gert Vlaming from DMO says that "we also soon expect to use the wave products from the Copernicus Marine Service".

MONITORING OIL SPILLS IN THE NORTH SEA

IMARES is involved in a European (DG MARE) funded project for assessing the cost-effectiveness and reliability of the existing oceanic monitoring infrastructure in the North Sea, and identifying any gaps. The objective is to test the available oceanic information (from Marine Copernicus Service and other sources) and to evaluate it in the framework of real case exercises (e.g. fake oil spill accident exercise). IMARES has for example built an oil spill monitoring system based on the GNOME (NOAA) oil spill trajectory model fed by the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents and satellite winds model. Jan Tjalling van der Wal from IMARES says that "the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents and satellite wind data are key inputs for our North Sea Checkpoint oil spill exercises. This saved us time and also the investment of time and expertise that would have been necessary to develop a hydrographical circulation model to get the currents right".

IMARES has successfully audited the value of the Copernicus Marine Service data in the case of an oil spill accident in the North Sea.

TRANSNATIONAL MULTI-MODELS TOOL: NOOS-DRIFT

Drift models are multi-purpose tools that can forecast the drift trajectory of any objects, substances or resources drifting at the sea surface or in the water column. Typically activated several hundreds of times per year and per country, drift models are among the most valuable tools in the day to day management of the coastal and marine environment, marine resources and maritime safety. Designed as a one-stop-shop service, NOOS-Drift is a distributed transnational multi-models ensemble system to assess and improve drift forecast accuracy in the European North West Continental Shelf. With a unique demand submitted either through a web application or through a machine-to-machine API, NOOS-Drift users can get access to, visualize and download an ensemble of drift trajectories produced by different national drift forecast services connected to the NOOS-Drift system. The analysis tool provides an estimate of the ensemble spread as well as the likely impacted areas.

The multi Model Ensemble approach is a common approach in weather forecast meteorology and climate studies, and relatively new in oceanography. Because of incomplete understanding of the physics of the earth system, different models representing weather/climate/ocean processes in different ways are developed providing a source of uncertainty in forecasts. In order to address this source of uncertainty, single projections from several models are used to generate the Multi Model Ensemble.

With NOOS-Drift, they could activate a similar transnational mechanism in a single click and receive analysis results within 15 minutes.

Each model service provider connected to NOOS-Drift must execute at least two drift simulations per request using the model native met-ocean forcing and the CMEMS NWS-MFC met-ocean forcing, respectively. This strategy allows to assess both the uncertainty inherent to the met-ocean forcing spread, and the uncertainty inherent to the models differences. Simulation with other CMEMS products can also be done in order to extend the size of the NOOS-Drift ensemble.

NOOS is EuroGOOS regional operational oceanographic system for the North West European Continental Shelf. Operated by 24 institutes from the nine countries bordering the extended North Sea and the Atlantic Approach, NOOS develops online operational marine data and information services for the NWS area and contributes to major initiatives such as EMODnet, CMEMS IN-SITU TAC, NWS-MFC, EOOS, etc.

MSFD-EUTRO: SATELLITE-BASED SERVICE IN SUPPORT TO MSFD CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

MSFD-Eutro is a free and interactive web-mapping service for chlorophyll indicator based on satellite data. MSFD-Eutro facilitates the use and interpretation of ocean colour data for public authorities working on the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). MSFD Descriptor 5 aims at monitoring eutrophication in coastal waters. Phytoplankton is a proxy for eutrophication and can be monitored by satellite.

Favourable conditions for phytoplankton development are mixing or water column stratification, increase in light availability, water temperature and/or nutrient level increase. Phytoplankton is also grazed and is at the base of the aquatic food web, providing an essential ecological function for all aquatic life. Variations and changes in the chlorophyll concentrations (CHL) are relevant for the study of the ecology and health of the sea. The Copernicus Marine Service delivers satellite chlorophyll-a products which are combined with standard satellite Chlorophyll-a products for turbid waters. Statistics (such as multi-year mean and maximum) as well as trend analysis of CHL are performed to help with the MSFD reporting.

Recognising both the ecological and economic importance of European seas, the EU has put in place a range of policies and measures, related to planning and regulating the sustainable use of European seas covering a number of activities such as fisheries, offshore energy production, and protection of marine biodiversity.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive, adopted in 2008, aims to ensure coherence between such EU policies and sets three goals for European seas: to be productive, healthy, and clean.

These efforts are also aligned with the EU's Blue Growth agenda.

COASTAL APPLICATIONS USING THE SCOTTISH SHELF MODEL CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Scottish Shelf Model (SSM) gives a detailed spatial picture of the physical water properties, unobtainable from observation alone. It is a resource that has already been shown to help government and commercial users better plan and protect Scottish Marine Waters. The SSM is a Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) of Scottish continental shelf waters, nested into Copernicus Marine products. Marine Scotland Science (MSS) are continuing to develop this system and integrate it with their existing FVCOM models. The model covers the Scottish continental shelf at relatively high resolution (up to 1 km node spacing at the coastline) but also covers most of UK waters, the North Sea and the English Channel. The domain extends in latitude from approximately 13° W to 13° E, including the Baltic Sea. In addition to this large domain Scottish Shelf Model, a number of smaller domain sub-models have been developed, covering areas of interest to specific socio-economic sectors such as aquaculture and marine renewable energy. These sub-models have a higher spatial resolution, necessary to adequately understand the complex physical processes within the area.

The SSM is a shared resource for the marine science community.

Developments will include the implementation of new high resolution sub-models, new hindcasts, forecast and climatological runs. The model has been used to provide resources for aquaculture, marine renewables and other marine scientists and policy makers, including tidal and wave energy resource maps; connectivity indices between aquaculture finfish farm management areas, and of Marine Protected Areas and Priority Marine Features; the environmental impact of tidal stream energy extraction and other renewable energy technologies.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide reanalysis of 3D ocean currents, temperature and salinity, and sea surface height, for use as boundary conditions from the European North West Shelves product. FOCUS ON COASTAL SEA DYNAMICS WITH CEASELESS PROJECT

The CEASELESS project focuses on coastal sea dynamics using satellite data (Sentinel data from Copernicus), in-situ coastal observations and met-ocean numerical models that consider explicitly the land boundary condition. It will help building the future coastal service of Copernicus. It provides a demonstration in various coastal areas of ad-hoc processing tools, data repositories and fit for purpose merging techniques from various ocean and land sources. It also brings further validation of the existing Copernicus products in coastal areas and provides examples of coastal applications using the Copernicus products and services.

Pilot geographical areas have been chosen for their contrasting met-ocean conditions, including the North Atlantic and Mediterranean offshore domains, the Catalan and North Adriatic Gulf, and the Danish coast and German Bight with freshwater inlets. For example, the CMEMS products have been used for renewable energy applications in the Danish coast, in order to assess the resource and the functional performance of offshore wind turbines. They have also been used in the Catalan coast for water quality applications.

EO data users in coastal areas need high spatial resolution and accuracy products to answer their specific problematic. Regarding accuracy, CEASELESS local forecasts include data assimilation from nearby coastal stations to compensate for coastal errors which, associated to topographic or bathymetric gradients, degrade the performance of meteorological and oceanographic models with respect to those in shelf and ocean waters. Regarding higher spatial resolution, CEASELESS has chosen to focus its models in location of interest, for instance a harbour entrance or access route or an inlet. Both accuracy and resolution have benefited predictions in the chosen pilot areas.

For example, the Copernicus Marine Service Physics and Wave model products in the European North West Shelf Seas have been used for renewable energy applications in the Danish coast, in order to assess the resource and the functional performance of offshore wind turbines. Other products like the model Wave product in the Mediterranean Sea, the Physics model product in the IBI area or the Med Sea Satellite Chl-a product have also been used in the Catalan coast for water quality applications.

HYDRODYNAMIC DOWNSCALING FOR COASTAL STUDIES

ARTELIA Group develops tools and services for various markets among which are maritime and port engineering, coastal environment and marine energy. In the case of port engineering for example, ARTELIA provides design and construction services for port extensions in various locations around the world. In such contracts, robust knowledge and expertise of the local hydrodynamics is required. CMEMS ocean model products are used to build a statistical analysis of the general and seasonal circulation patterns of the considered area. CMEMS ocean models are also used as boundary conditions for higher resolution ocean models: dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Florence Gandilhon from ARTELIA says that "Downscaling the CMEMS regional ocean dynamics enables us to take into account its impact on considered coastal areas. We follow CMEMS product developments closely, as they help us develop new markets and studies".

RIVAGES PRO TECH collects data, runs detailed ocean models and provides synthetic indicators for decision making support.

In the UK, Cefas leads the development and application of marine ecosystem indicators and provides assessments to support the implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) that requires EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. MARINE DRIFT FORECAST: LITTER-TEP

Meteorological events, such as storm precipitations and/or gale force winds, act as triggers to influx of macro litter into the hydrological cycle via run off from land into rivers then the sea and/or direct fly off to the sea. The marine litter is then transported through the ocean regions by currents and wind either becoming entrained, possibly sinking and/or disintegrating into micro marine litter or ending up being stranded at the coast, then washed back in the sea, collected or flown on land. ARGANS has developed a web-based service, called Litter-TEP, that aims to track marine litter from the source. It uses a parametric model of riverine macro litter discharge, to seed drift models of the NE Atlantic Shelf Region (OSPAR II/III), providing to end-users a 5-day running forecast of macro-litter density in the sea, potential beach stranding at the coast and, inversely, where a beach litter event is identified to provide the likelihood of where the litter entered the sea. In order to determine drift trajectories ocean current, wave and wind forecasts are needed. These are produced by the Copernicus Marine Service high quality analysis and forecast product

According to specialists, 80 % of litters accumulate on the coastlines and sea bottom or drifting comes from land. 15% of total litter achieve their path on beaches, that is an issue for the local authorities. If the plastic is an ecological problem, litters are not only plastics but also metal or natural (tree trunk, clothes, etc). This service is the next-generation tool for planning beach cleaning and helping local authorities to track back the trash to their sources, leading the fight against litter pollution and for improvement of the river water quality. One of the service next improvement is to include the litter's type in the model as their course is different.

OCEANA MARINE EXPEDITIONS TO FILL KEY GAPS IN BIODIVERSITY DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

One of the key components of Oceana's work is to carry out research expeditions at sea with the aim of marine habitat protection. Such expeditions allow for the collection of in situ data on marine species, communities, and habitats. Various technologies are used during these expeditions. The resulting data allows for the preparation of detailed proposals for the designation, expansion or improved management of marine protected areas for biodiversity conservation or fisheries sustainability. During Oceana research expeditions, multiple spatial data sources are used (such as Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet) which are of vital importance throughout the entire project.

For example, during the expedition preparations, marine data are used to define the study areas, identify specific points of potential interest and plan survey methodology.

Moreover, for the preparation of reports, marine data help in developing proposed marine conservation and fisheries management measures.

Since 2005, Oceana has carried out 29 oceanographic expeditions in 28 countries, and approximately 3000 surveys. They have filmed more than 2000 hours of video of marine habitats and species from Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean waters. These videos, together with still images and with samples from more than 500 grabs, have yielded new information and understanding of the biodiversity present in the many areas where Oceana has carried out expeditions in Europe. Many of these data have contributed to Oceana efforts to create or expand marine protected areas; to date, these efforts have led to the protection of 73 028 km² of marine area in countries such as Finland, Malta, Portugal and Spa

WISE-MARINE: A PLATFORM IN SUPPORT TO MSFD

WISE-Marine is a portal and infrastructure for sharing information with the marine community on the marine environment at European level. Focusing on the state of the marine environment at the European scale, WISE Marine shows the information and knowledge gathered or derived through the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) process and other key marine policy drivers. It is developed in a partnership among Commission services (DG-ENV, DG-JRC), the European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eurostat. WISE-Marine presents available data related to the implementation of the MSFD in European Seas. WISE-Marine has developed a GIS map viewer https://maps.eea.europa.eu/wab/wise-marine-map/ displaying different layers originating from various sources, among which salinity and Chlorophyll-A from the Copernicus Marine Service. In the WISE-Marine map viewer, key topics can be explored and visualized spatially.This comprehensive knowledge base about the ocean is essential to support European marine policies and ocean governance.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) aims to achieve Good Environmental Status of the EU's marine waters by 2020.

Under the MSFD, each Member State must establish monitoring programmes to support the assessments (based on 11 selected descriptors) and the regular update of targets. At present, most monitoring programmes are based on in-situ sampling methods for coastal areas. For offshore areas, the in-situ information is usually sparse or absent. Data from EO satellites can provide suitable information for marine status assessment offshore. In particular, current ocean colour missions such as the Copernicus Sentinel-3 can support the assessment of descriptor 5.

The adoption of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic products and services. Quonops© Online Services, by Quiet-Oceans, provides noise monitoring and prediction tools. It produces an estimate of the spatio-temporal distribution of noise levels generated by human activities at sea and assesses source contributions to the global noise field. It provides for example real time noise and monthly statistical noise maps from shipping. It also allows mapping scenarios of noisy activities at sea to predict their impacts. The outputs are tailored to the requirements of regulations such as the EU MSFD directive. Based on physical acoustic propagation models, Quonops© considers the reality of the area through input data gathered from numerous sources. MONITORING TRENDS IN BIOGEOCHEMICAL INDICATORS TO SUPPORT MARINE POLICIES CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Monitoring trends in biogeochemical indicators such as chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations is crucial for evaluating the ocean response to global climate change. Researchers from PML have integrated the CMEMS satellite-derived data with a coupled physical-biogeochemical model using a method that constrains the output to fit the observations. This results into a biogeochemistry reanalysis which provides a unique decadal data set that has considerable skill in approximating ocean observations, and that can enhance the understanding and management for marine policies of the North West European shelf ecosystem, in relation to eutrophication and fluctuations of the carbon cycle. Results show for example that an area as large as 325,000 km2 is vulnerable to oxygen deficiency at the bottom of the North West European shelf, and an additional 40,000 km2 are included when using a strict 1% confidence criteria.

It also shows that the North West European shelf is a net sink of atmospheric CO2, with a simulated uptake that ranges between 36 and 46 Tg C yr-1, when applying a 90% confidence level for the estimates.

SUPPORTING THE JRC AND EU WITH THE COMMON FISHERIES POLICY (CFP) CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The dynamic identification of essential fish habitat by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission contributes to the protection of fish stock recovery areas (Article 8 of the Common Fisheries Policy, CFP). Habitat analysis showed that marine predators are attracted by productive fronts for feeding (chlorophyll-a fronts). These studies used the Copernicus Marine Service products of satellite ocean colour and hydrodynamic models to daily map favourable feeding habitats of important species such as hake, Atlantic bluefin tuna, skipjack tuna, fin whale and blue shark. These habitat products are useful as a decision tool for fisheries closure, by-catch reduction and improvement of fish stock estimates. Essential habitats of marine species are also key information for research on full ecosystem modelling and animal behavior analysis. Jean-Noël Druon from the JRC says "Copernicus Marine Service ocean models provide crucial data of suitable quality for our fish habitat model allowing identification both at decadal and real-time time scales. They are major inputs to build robust operational ecology products to sustain the fisheries sector".

DEIMOS Engenharia is a private Portuguese Aerospace Engineering company which coordinates the SIMOcean project, http://www.simocean.pt/. This project is integrated in the initiative of the Portuguese Government to develop a set of coordinated systems providing access to national marine data. SIMOcean will help the Portuguese government in its decision making and management process in 3 areas: Fishing area characterization, Sea state index for harbour areas and Diagnostic of met-ocean fields.

Several datasets, currently scattered among different departments of the Portuguese Meteorological (IPMA) and the Navy's Hydrographic (IH) Institutes, will be brought together in an Open Data system to be exploited by three flagship value added services. SIMOcean stores model and in-situ information from different sources and providers, including datasets from the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS). The CMEMS data, specifically Ocean Colour and Observed Sea Surface Temperature, are important data sources for the Fishing Areas Characterization Service, since they are used as environmental variables to model the sardine and mackerel possible distribution.

LISTENING TO THE OCEAN'S NOISE

The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) is participating in the International Quiet Ocean Experiment, which objective is to understand the impact of underwater anthropogenic noise on aquatic life, develop solutions for ocean noise monitoring and reduce the impact of anthropogenic noise through regulation. TNO has developed an underwater sound modelling system that performs mathematical calculations of underwater sound pressure as a function of time, space and the frequency of sound sources. The speed of sound in seawater is dependent on water density (i.e. temperature and salinity) and wave height will have an influence on local noise and long range propagation. TNO uses the Copernicus Marine Service Global model as an input source for ocean density. Mark Prior from TNO says that the Copernicus Marine Service global model is an accurate tool for providing seawater density, which affects our underwater sound propagation model.

DELTARES is an independent, not-for-profit, applied research institute. The European Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directive requires EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In the Netherlands, DELTARES is one of the national institutes in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise.

The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor number 5 dealing with eutrophication. Meinte Blaas from DELTARES has stated that "Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as this allows us to improve consistency in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

TRACKING WHALES IN THE NORTH-ATLANTIC

Highly migratory species such as whales are often exposed to anthropogenic threats. A research led by the Okeanos RD center from the University of Azores focused on the migration pathways of three whales species from the North Atlantic Ocean: fin, blue and sei whales. They described their spatiotemporal distribution to understand their movement patterns and provide sustained data to protect them against ship collisions and noise disturbance.

To create an accurate tracking model, they used several data sets, including Copernicus Marine data. Researchers modelled the whales? habitat preferences in light of certain environmental and prey-related variables. Potential prey biomass distributions were obtained from SEAPODYM - a mid-trophic level spatial ecosystem and population dynamics model. This biomass distribution was provided by Copernicus Marine micronekton product, which contained parameters such as zooplanktons and micronektons.

They are key explanatory variables for understanding the individual behaviour and population dynamics of larger oceanic predators.

Migratory marine animals are increasingly vulnerable to extinction and population declines due to cumulative anthropogenic impacts on their environment. Baleen whales are the largest animals on earth, yet the 3 species (blue, fin and sei) have suffered from overhunting. They are now considered "endangered" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They feed on some of the smallest animals in the ocean such as zooplanktons and micronektons. Climate change could alter their habitat preference to northward waters, and this could make them more vulnerable.

Webstep is developing predictive models and business simulator to support decision making in fish farming in European seas. Based on data from the Copernicus Marine Service, Webstep designs predictive statistical models that allow predicting future temperature for specific areas. Sea temperature plays an important role on fish production due to the sea temperature effects on fish mortality rate, average maturation time of the fish, and average harvested weight of the fish. Since temperature is a natural phenomenon with a strong seasonality component, predictive models can yield good predictions of future temperatures. In addition, these models can serve as an input for a Business simulator. It is a methodology taking data as an input, and based on a series of assumptions, producing a corresponding outcome. It helps answering WHAT IF questions, as for example: What will happen to a given salmon population development if the sea temperature increases by 2° C?. When combined with predictive modeling, a business simulator can support fish farming decision makers with the impact future events might have in their business.

The Daithi O Murchu Marine Research Station, DOMMRS, is Ireland first privately-owned, independent, commercial research centre.

DOMMRS has a wide variety of onshore and marine facilities, and works across a range of areas, from sustainable energy to aquaculture, from fisheries to waste solutions. The station is currently involved in 7 EU-funded projects, as well as Irish national and privately-funded contracts, to which Copernicus Marine Service data provisions (observed and modelled) are key.

Indicators and tools collecting data from various sources such as the Ocean Colour and Sea Surface Temperature satellite products from the Copernicus Marine Service are provided to aquaculture farmers and fish industries. They also use weekly bulletins based on in-situ HAB observations, a hydrodynamical model downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service model, and in-situ and satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service.

HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM MONITORING FOR AQUACULTURE FARMS IN IRELAND CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Marine Institute in Ireland releases weekly Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) bulletins to prevent toxin related aquaculture farm closures. The Marine Institute in Ireland is the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for marine biotoxins. Aquaculture farms around Ireland are subject to water pollution by diarrhetic shellfish poisoning toxins. The Irish Marine Institute, in the framework of the ASIMUTH project, publishes weekly bulletins based on in-situ HAB observations, the results of a hydrodynamical model downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service, and in-situ and satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. During toxic algae blooms, the high-resolution local model forecast is a useful tool for predicting the risk of aquaculture farm harvesting closures.

Tomasz Dabrowski from the Irish Marine Institute says that "the Copernicus Marine Service global model provides accurate ocean current forecasts around Ireland for downscaling into higher resolution local models."

Harmful algal blooms, or HABs, occur when colonies of algae, i.e. simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater, grow out of control while producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds. The human illnesses caused

by HABs, though rare, can be debilitating or even fatal. HABs have been reported in many locations around the world, and their occurrence may be on the rise. HABs are a global concern because they affect not only the health of people and marine ecosystems, but also the 'health' of local and regional economies.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide with 7-day forecast of 3D ocean currents updated daily. Physics Models over the European North West Shelves is used in this application. ACRI-ST and 7 partners have developed products, tools and services for the aquaculture and fishing industries in the framework of the FP7-SAFI project. Indicators and tools collecting data from various sources such as the Ocean Colour and Sea Surface Temperature satellite products from the Copernicus Marine Service are available to aquaculture farmers and fishing-related industries. Such dashboards help them with their daily decision making, for example to optimise site location selection for shellfish growth, or to monitor water quality. Antoine Mangin from ACRI-ST says that "more than 65 end users have been consulted so far and are potentially interested by the SAFI services".

COMBINING DESALINISATION AND WAVE ENERGY FARMS

Wavepiston has been working on wave energy since 2006. The Danish company aims to create sustainable and affordable devices to harness the vast potential of ocean waves. Currently demonstrating its prototype off the coast of Denmark, the team plans on deploying another device in the Mediterranean.

Wavepiston is developing devices using wave energy to produce electricity and power desalinisation plants. Selecting a test site is a crucial step for wave energy companies as wave energy converters are often optimized for a specific wave climate.

Resource assessment is thus one of the first phases of any ocean energy project. Using Copernicus Marine Service data, Wavepiston was able to perform quick assessments of the feasibility of wave sites in the North Sea and the Mediterranean. During the R and D phase, running power production simulations is necessary to validate the models used by the company. The Copernicus Marine wave data allowed Wavepiston to conduct potential power generation simulations on given project sites.

Estimates of potential production from wave energy vary, but all agree that the size of the prize is significant from 4.000 TWh/year (Cruz 2008) to 29.500 TWh/year (IPCC 2011). As a benchmark, Europe consumes around 3.000 TWh/year. Wave energy can provide utility scale power production. It also has applications for remote islands replacing expensive and polluting diesel-powered production. Furthermore, wave energy can power onshore and offshore industries such as fish farms, oil and gas platforms and desalinisation plants.

SUPPORT TO EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES FOR DEEP SEA MINING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

SAGRES Project is an innovative and disruptive approach developed by ISQ that focus on the conception and validation of an algorithm that supports decision to prospection and exploration (P&E) activities related with deep sea mineral (DSM) resources based on satellite information, and complemented by in-situ data, including CMEMS data. The fusion and analysis of these data can be used as approximation vectors towards mineralization in order to enhance location, delineation and ranking of potential P&E target areas related with the occurrence of DSM resources such as manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulphide deposits. By using this approach, SAGRES Project expects to increase P&E discovery success rates, optimize campaigns time, reduce P&E uncertainty and costs, and provide baseline information related to the environmental impact of this activity. The preliminary and ongoing results are very promising, and show for several areas considered in the North Atlantic Ocean a significant forecast capacity performed by the algorithm.

In the case of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, the algorithm results show 77% of certainty in its forecasted capability. The distribution of the algorithm predicted points are in good agreement with the depth range considered appropriated for the economically viable occurrence of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. The SAGRES Project ongoing approach can therefore contribute to smarter ocean exploration missions.

PROVIDING FORECAST UNCERTAINTIES WITH A MULTI-MODEL ENSEMBLE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Several forecast products of operational ocean forecasting models, including the Copernicus Marine Service Baltic and North West Shelf models are available for the North Sea and Baltic Sea serving as input for a so-called Multi-Model Ensemble (MME), developed by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). The MME is a supporting tool to assess forecast uncertainties, adding considerable value to the users of the single-model forecasts. Currently, there are 13 operational forecasting models providing 48h-forecasts of the following parameters: 2D salinity and temperature at the sea surface and at the bottom, 2D sea-surface currents, daily vertically integrated water transport across pre-defined transects, and sea-surface height at 24 stations in the Baltic Sea. Ensemble statistics, such as MME mean and standard deviation and differences between each ensemble member and the MME are provided on the NOOS and BOOS (i.e. North West Shelf and Baltic Operational Oceanographic System) website. Further, validation is performed using Copernicus Marine Service SST and in-situ data.

The multi Model Ensemble approach is a common approach in weather forecast meteorology and climate studies, and relatively new in oceanography. Because of incomplete understanding of the physics of the earth system, different models representing weather/climate/ocean processes in different ways are developed providing a source of uncertainty in forecasts. In order to address this source of uncertainty, single projections from several models are used to generate the Multi Model Ensemble.

SEASONAL FORECASTING AT MéTéO-FRANCE

Météo-France, the French meteorology agency, provides seasonal forecasts for many applications such as hydroelectric energy production management in Sweden and food security early warning systems in Ethiopia, among many others. Predicting ocean behaviour is essential, especially in the tropics, in order to provide accurate seasonal forecasts. Météo-France modelling techniques are based on ocean-atmosphere coupled models and simulations are performed both in real time and for a long reference period in the past. Patrick Josse from Météo-France says that High quality consistent initial oceanic states are needed, both in real time and over the last 25 years and are provided by the Copernicus Marine Service 3D global model product and also the high quality Sea Surface Temperature satellite product. Those two CMEMS products provide key input for seasonal forecasting activities.

El Nino is one of the main seasonal events and is closely studied

by Météo France and its seasonal forecast experts. The El Niño acts to redistribute heat and precipitation over the globe. It bestows beneficial effects on economies as well as negative effects. In the United States, for example, researchers have estimated that the 1997-1998 El Niño pattern inflicted costs of approximately $4 billion, but was offset by $19 billion in benefits.

COMBATTING PLASTIC POLLUTION: EMILY PENN EXXPEDITION

Emily Penn is a sailor and ocean advocate whose goal is to struggle against plastic and toxics pollution. As a sailor, she witnessed contamination and decided to create eXXpedition, an all-female expedition aiming at collecting plastic samples , delivering awareness sessions and finding solutions to negative environmental and health issues created by single-used plastics.

Exxpedition aims at fighting plastic contamination by building a global network of multidisciplinary women who can contribute to world-class scientific studies. Emily Penn's work has helped inform to the global knowledge about plastic in the ocean, contributing data to 27 different studies with partner organisations around the world.

Former expeditions have led to understand better the endemic nature of microplastics. From 2019 to 2021, as a wish to know better the plastic issue as a whole, Emily Pen eXXpedition "Round the World" will circumnavigate the globe via four ocean Gyres and the Arctic.

Plastic has been contaminating and destroying marine ecosystem for years.

Since 2014, the eXXpedition crew has conducted 11 expeditions to understand the causes of and solutions to plastic pollution, collecting 75 samples across the Atlantic, the Amazon, the Carribean, Great Britain, the North Pacific. EXXpedition has now embarked on its most ambitious mission yet, circumnavigating the world collecting microplastics samples from the surface of the ocean, the subsurface, the subtidal sediment and back on land to understand where it's coming from and how we can stop the tap.

Mercator Ocean and CMEMS provide eXXpedition drift calculations using ocean current data to locate the concentration of plastics in the five oceanic gyres. It is used as a tool in outreach talks and on the online tracker map to allow people to learn about how the currents impact plastic pollution. «The model, a clear visual aid based on real data, has been an essential tool for engaging with people and increasing their understanding of the movement of ocean plastic» says Emily Penn.

OCEAN BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE: OCEBIS

OCEBIS is an open downstream service for the fishery industry sector. Its maps show where life conditions are best in the ocean, based on the knowledge of the different species in the ecosystem.

Such map are based on Copernicus Marine Service operational physical and biogeochemical data products. Bottom-up ecosystem drivers sets the conditions for life in the ocean. For example, frontal and mesoscale structures, spatial biological indices and marine spatial connectivity are ecosystem drivers that influence life in the ocean. With the OCEBIS service, users can customize how to visualize oceanic data and freely download data/images seen in the browser. The OCEBIS operational web service provides continuous updated real-time maps of biologically relevant data layers. Its software components are available for free download, so users can explore their own hypotheses about life conditions in the ocean. It amounts to 7 billions Euros for the marine fish farming landing value. SUPPORTING MSFD DIRECTIVE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN: THE IFADO PROJECT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The iFADO project aims to create marine services at regional and subregional scale using the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in the EU Atlantic Waters as case study. The project combines traditional monitoring with cost-effective, state-of-the-art technologies: remote sensing, numerical modelling and emerging observation platforms such us gliders and oceanic buoys. It downscales CMEMS products and combine them with gliders, ocean buoys and satellite data, to develop tailor-made and innovative services to assist the MSFD competent authorities, enhance the local and regional blue economy, optimize observing strategies and capitalise on individual partner initiatives and historical data. In order to tackle difficulties arising from the MSFD implementation, iFADO aggregate ocean information for the EU Atlantic region ensuring the comparability of assessment approaches and methods with an homogeneous transnational approach.

COASTAL TURBID PLUME SURVEY

Telespazio has developed a near-real time service for coastal to nearshore waters to warn users and stakeholders about water quality sanitary risk. They have developed a downscaling modeling suite where the Copernicus Marine Service model is used to provide boundary conditions for a higher resolution ocean model to monitor turbid plumes. Fed by CMEMS data, numerical models and optical imagery processing are coupled in order to improve the forecasting capacity. These tools are cross-validated

by CMEMS and local in-situ data. This service allows stakeholders to optimize preventive closure of recreational beaches in case of sanitary risk suspicion, e.g. bacterial -E. coli or coliform -contamination. In such case, the service also supports further the management of bathing water quality. In summary, it produces alerts in case of risk resulting in an efficient optimization of preventive beach closure, pollutant source identification, and finally aims to improve sewer system management. It also helps public stakeholders regarding health-care issues and limits impact on coastal zones economy, especially during the touristic summer period.

SUPPORTING FRANCE WITH THE EUROPEAN MARINE STRATEGY FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The European Water Framework (hereafter WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directives both require EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In France, IFREMER is one of the national agencies in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:320 10D0477(01)) in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor 5, which deals with eutrophication. Francis Gohin from IFREMER has stated that "the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as it allows us to improve coherence in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

SECURING HUMAN LIVES AND ASSETS IN A HARSH OCEAN ENVIRONMENT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

AHPA, Asset Health and Probabilistic Analyses, focuses on probability analyses of fractures and strains on offshore structures.

AHPA gives answers to the questions: How can we be sure that offshore structures are sufficiently safe? How can we ensure that no accidents occur? Experience data of where, when and why fatigue cracks occur have been systematically collected for Jacket structures and for Semi-submersibles. Such fatigue cracks are linked to the strains that offshore structures are exposed to due to harsh weather conditions in the North Sea. Of particular interest is the accumulated impact of wave forces, but also the importance of forecasting wave e.g. wave swell in periods of important marine procedures where the swell frequency is close to the resonance frequency of a structure. This wave information can be derived from Copernicus Marine Service. For example, the ship heave motion is of serious concern during marine operations. Combined wind sea and swell system from different directions may result in rapid changes in the heave amplitude. CMEMS wave height combined with period is used to predict the 3-dimensional motion of floating bodies.

A harsh ocean environment with strong winds and waves over decades of use causes significant wear and tear on offshore structures. The angle from which waves hit a platform, and the wave height are important factors, but in addition the wave frequency is an important factor due to the resonance frequency of the structure itself. If a wave system with high energy at a certain frequency hits a structure such as a platform or a ship, it can be extremely dangerous to perform operations.

Wave forecasts from the CMEMS North West Shelf model, including significant wave height, wave period, wave direction, wave energy spectra are used in this application. Moreover, CMEMS Ocean Wind Observations is also used. A long period of wind observations is important to compute the forces that a structure has been exposed to through that period of time, and to model the expected remaining lifetime.

FINDING BOAT ADRIFT DURING MINITRANSAT SAILING RACE

MetOcean Solutions is a science-based consultancy that offers specialist numerical modelling and analytical services in meteorology and oceanography. End of October 2017, MetOcean Solutions helped Pantaenius, the global yacht insurance company, find a missing yacht abandoned during the Mini Transat 6.50 race.

The yacht had been abandoned on 5 Oct off Spain Cape Finisterre.

Luca Sabiu, the yacht sailor, was airlifted out by helicopter by the Spanish navy. Pantaenius contacted MetOcean Solutions for advice on where the boat would drift to over the following 2-3 days during which strong winds and heavy seas would prevent its immediate salvage. MetOcean Solutions forecasted the drift trajectory of the boat taking into account the effect of the wind and current on the boat using a range of datasets, including currents from the CMEMS Global Ocean model. Drifting simulations using the CMEMS Global Ocean currents (and ECMWF winds) proved to be the most accurate, with the boat being effectively found within 2-3 nautical miles of the predicted position. Drift trajectory simulated with other than CMEMS ocean model gave much larger error in the boat location.

Founded in 1977, the Mini-Transat sailing race celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2017. This year edition starts on October 1st 2017 from La Rochelle in France and ends in La Martinique, French Antilles, with the participation of 84 men and women sailors from 15 nationalities. It is a 4050 nautical miles solo crossing race, on the smallest offshore racing boats (only 6.50 meter long). It is sailed in two legs: 1) The first one, from La Rochelle to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1350 miles long, 7 to 10 sailing days), 2) The 2700 miles long second leg start from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November (15 to 20 sailing days to reach Le Marin in La Martinique, French West Indies).

GREAT CIRCLE SHIP-ROUTING APPLICATION

GREAT CIRCLE, a Belgian startup, has developed a sailing navigation software (SQUID) that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. Great Circle works with most of the leading offshore teams and race management offices around the world, including the Vendée Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, Route du Rhum and America Cup. SQUID is software that lets the user download and view the GRIB weather files and does the routing with the isochronic method. SQUID can also display satellite images (visible imagery, infrared, water vapour and colour composite) and retrieve synoptic charts and observations (SYNOP, METAR and scatterometry). SQUID uses the Copernicus Marine Service sea-surface temperature satellite data as an input as well as ocean model currents for the Global ocean and Europeans Seas.

SHIP ROUTING WITH THE SCANNAV NAVIGATION SOFTWARE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

ScanNav provides all necessary tools and support for ship navigation and ship routing (e.g. raster and vector charts from National Hydrographical Offices), GPS and other instruments plug-ins for real-time navigation and/or post-analysis, maps to create routes overlaid with e.g. tide information, water levels or weather and ocean forecasts. ScanNav utilises surface current data from Copernicus Marine Service models in the European North West Shelf areas, the Iberia Biscay Ireland and Mediterranean Sea converted into Grib format. Surface current products are used for ship routing purposes through application of the ScanNav routing module. Other uses include fishing or diving activities and usage were visualization of currents is important. The User defines an area on the chart, send a request to the ScanNav server which returns the results directly via a website, or as an email reply. The service includes converting NCEP data to Grib data on user-selected areas. ScanNav customers are mostly focused on the leisure market. ScanNav also serves professional market customers especially with regard to distribution of Official ENC (Electronic Navigational Charts).

SAFE TRANSPORT OF GAS IN THE NORTH SEA

The PIPEX project focuses on modelling the transport of natural gas through subsea pipelines taking into account oceanic conditions. The natural gas produced by Norway is transported to Europe in large diameter subsea pipelines, and the state of the entire pipeline system is modelled in real time. The accuracy of the capacity estimations is important for optimisation of existing infrastructure and for design of new pipelines. Sea bottom temperature is a particularly important parameter when calculating the transport capacity in a subsea gas pipeline as the volume of the gas is nearly directly proportional to the temperature. Modelled sea bottom temperature data from the Copernicus Marine Service North West Shelf Forecasting model are used as input to the computer models at GASSCO, because observed sea bottom temperatures are not available. Recent analyses of the deviation between the modelled and measured gas temperature in the pipelines show a maximum temperature difference of up to 2 °C. Reducing this deviation by improving the estimation of the sea bottom temperature will have a key economic incentive for the project.

SUPPORT TO MARINE SEISMIC SHIP OPERATIONS

CGG collects seismic data to image the subsurface of the Earth. At sea, this data is acquired by deploying large spreads of sensors: up to 14 cables separated by 100m each and up to 10km in length are towed between 7m and 50m below the sea surface. These operations can be affected by environmental conditions (sea current, swell, wind). Access to relevant marine information, through services like CMEMS, is essential to operation performance and safety. The oceanographic information is used at different stages of an acquisition. During preparation, past statistical data is processed to assess ocean conditions, identify risks and anticipate possible performance issues. During surveys, the global understanding of the ocean dynamics is needed to set correct equipment and sensors parameters, make real time decisions for managing the environmental risks, and ideally for optimizing acquisition strategy. Specifically, acoustic propagation parameters are based on water column information, the steering of the acquisition spread requires a good multilayer current anticipation, and accurate weather forecast ensures safe management and protection of the equipment.

The modelling method called “Downscaling” allows the Copernicus Marine Service data to be used to develop high resolution coastal models, useful for coastal management.

Using our products, each European Member State can:  Monitor sea water  Notably sea water quality in line with eutrophication in the European Marine areas impacted by Strategy Framework harmful algae blooms Directive (MSFD)
