OPENCOASTS ON-DEMAND MARINE DATA FORECAST SERVICE FOR COASTAL MANAGEMENT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Forecast systems are fundamental components of emergency response and routine management of coastal regions. They provide coastal managers and all entities that have responsibilities on the coast with accurate and timely predictions on water conditions (e.g., water levels and velocities; wave characteristics), supporting multiple uses such as navigation, water monitoring, port operations, dredging works and construction activities on the coast.

In this context, LNEC, LIP, CNRS and UC have developed the OPENCoastS service that builds on-demand circulation forecast systems for user-selected sections of the coast and maintains them to ensure that they are running operationally for the timeframe defined by the user. This daily service generates forecasts of water levels and 2D velocities (and wave parameters in the near future) over the spatial region of interest for periods of 48 hours based on numerical simulations of all relevant physical processes. The platform includes an interactive map to allow for the visualization of the model outputs and comparison with sensor data for physical variables.

The generation of a forecast service is usually a highly specialized task. The maintenance cost is high in terms of human and computer resources. Accordingly, OPENCoastS automates this service and provides the computational resources through the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). OPENCoastS simulations use the model SCHISM (http://ccrm.vims.edu/schismweb/). This service is co-funded by the EOSC-hub project (Horizon 2020) under Grant number 777536.

WEB-BASED COASTAL MONITORING SERVICE: BSO

The Brazilian Sea Observatory (BSO) is a web-based coastal monitoring service to integrate forecast modelling results, satellite observations, in-situ measurements, and vessel positions. An operational modelling system based on a downscaling approach from the Copernicus Marine Service models provides high-resolution forecast results for local coastal systems, initially focusing on the south-eastern Brazilian shelf. Trough the BSO, users are able to simulate on-demand marine pollution incidents (e.g., oil spills) considering the highest resolution models. The main goal is to promote a cooperation network for the exchange of information connected to oceanography research and contribute to coastal and marine environment management, maritime safety management, marine resources management, oceanic and weather forecasting, tourism activities, fisheries and aquaculture, and scientific research.

Although the BSO recently started, supported by the user uptake program, different sectors have demonstrated great interest, including Port Administrations, Companies, Environmental Agencies, State Departments, and researchers. The launch event counted with approximately 100 people from public and private sectors and important media coverage on television and several news sites, due to its important contribution to coastal management, such as oil drift modelling. The visibility achieved will be important for the future of the service maintenance and development.

SUPPORTING NOAA OCEANWATCH MONITOR

NOAA CoastWatch was established in 1987 in response to two significant environmental events. CoastWatch portfolio has now expanded to providing a variety of environmental satellite data (Sea Surface Temperature, ocean color, salinity, sea surface altimetry and winds) from several different satellite platforms covering all U.S. coastal waters, including Hawaii and Alaska. It provides easy access for everyone to global and regional satellite data products for use in understanding, managing and protecting ocean and coastal resources and for assessing impacts of environmental change in ecosystems, weather, and climate.

Scientific validation of NOAA CoastWatch portfolio is done by the OceanWatch Monitor system. The OceanWatch Monitor is designed to address the need for monitoring and validation of satellite-based all ocean products and make the diagnostics available online. Currently, it is a stand-alone system and serves as a companion website to NOAA CoastWatch and will be selectively integrated in the future. It uses a number of products from Copernicus Marine Service as a first guess to monitor stability and consistency of various NOAA CoastWatch data record

Today, NOAA CoastWatch sea surface temperature maps support meteorological weather predictions and also support commercial and recreational activities (e.g., fishing). Biologists also utilize ocean color radiometry data and derived chlorophyll-a and total suspended matter/turbidity products to identify runoff plumes and blooms and also predict Harmful Algae Blooms. Moreover, sailors and commercial shipping pilots use ocean surface vector winds for safe navigation.

A number of products from Copernicus Marine Service are used as an independant first guess to monitor stability and consistency of various data records and allows to make a relative performance assessment. The ones obtained from Copernicus Marine Service include satellite-based or model-based products from Ocean color, sea surface height, sea surface salinity and sea surface wind.

COASTAL MARINE SAFETY IN COSTA RICA

The MIO (Oceanographic Information Module) application allows to receive warnings of sea state conditions on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica. Wind forecasts, wave (height, period and direction), sea surface temperature and ocean currents are provided, with warning messages for swimmers and rip currents, sailing boats and docking at ports. This application has been created in June 2011 as a part of the Research Centre in Marine and Limnology Sciences (CIMAR) of the University of Costa RICA (UCR). UCR is the official entity about oceanographic events of the National Commission on Risk Prevention and Emergency Response of Costa Rica. The MIO platform consists in a web page and two applications. According to Google Analytics reports in 2018 the apps report about 9500 users and was installed 10000+ times. The webpage report about 9000 users. One of the products of MIO is the regional forecast in the surroundings of Costa Rica available form the apps and the web, the latter offer Sea Surface Temperature and Ocean Currents forecast maps using data provided by the Copernicus Marine Service global forecast model.

TAILORED MARINE WEATHER INFORMATION SERVICES CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Sea related operations management requires the best possible knowledge about the factors that impact them. In the recent years, Earth Observation products and services have become more widely available and reliable. The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) represents one data source which can provide important efficiency and safety gains for different operations in the marine environment. Taking advantage of these data sets HIDROMOD is daily producing derived downstream services providing user fitted information which include high resolution model forecasts and local real-time observations.

Different coastal activities such as navigation, seaport operations, aquaculture, sea pollution control services, search and rescue missions, etc., are already benefiting from these services and by this way improving their efficiency and safety. HIDROMOD is making use of different Copernicus Marine Service data sets either for high resolution models validation (mostly satellite data) or for high resolution models operation (CMEMS regional forecasts to provide initial and boundary conditions to high resolution models).

Although the exact quantification of the benefits is difficult, it is a fact that the return in efficiency for operations related to ports or aquaculture are translated into thousands of Euros a year. In practice the recognition by the users of the added value translates in their willing to pay for the provided services. It already represents about 25% of HIDROMOD annual turnover. Examples of clients are 5 major ports in Portugal, 1 in Spain and 1 in Brazil, 2 water utilities, 2 electric utilities in Portugal and 1 major aquaculture operation in Portugal. New pilots are starting in operations related with offshore renewables and aquacultures.

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS IN SUPPORT TO GERMAN RWE OFFSHORE WIND FARM OPERATOR CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

HYDRODYNAMIC DOWNSCALING FOR COASTAL STUDIES

ARTELIA Group develops tools and services for various markets among which are maritime and port engineering, coastal environment and marine energy. In the case of port engineering for example, ARTELIA provides design and construction services for port extensions in various locations around the world. In such contracts, robust knowledge and expertise of the local hydrodynamics is required. CMEMS ocean model products are used to build a statistical analysis of the general and seasonal circulation patterns of the considered area. CMEMS ocean models are also used as boundary conditions for higher resolution ocean models: dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Florence Gandilhon from ARTELIA says that "Downscaling the CMEMS regional ocean dynamics enables us to take into account its impact on considered coastal areas. We follow CMEMS product developments closely, as they help us develop new markets and studies".

The SUEZ center RIVAGES PRO TECH develops tools and services for real-time monitoring and forecasting of the nearshore environment for empowered decision making. For example, local authorities in charge of bathing water quality and coastal waters as well as beach users benefit from RIVAGES PRO TECH services.

RIVAGES PRO TECH collects data, runs detailed ocean models and provides synthetic indicators for decision making support.

Microbial organisms, also referred to as pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses in water bodies can make waters unsafe for humans. Swimming and other recreational activities in water contaminated with pathogens can make people ill. Hence monitoring the microbial organisms in water bodies helps local authorities to protect human health.

OCEANA MARINE EXPEDITIONS TO FILL KEY GAPS IN BIODIVERSITY DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

One of the key components of Oceana's work is to carry out research expeditions at sea with the aim of marine habitat protection. Such expeditions allow for the collection of in situ data on marine species, communities, and habitats. Various technologies are used during these expeditions. The resulting data allows for the preparation of detailed proposals for the designation, expansion or improved management of marine protected areas for biodiversity conservation or fisheries sustainability. During Oceana research expeditions, multiple spatial data sources are used (such as Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet) which are of vital importance throughout the entire project.

For example, during the expedition preparations, marine data are used to define the study areas, identify specific points of potential interest and plan survey methodology.

Moreover, for the preparation of reports, marine data help in developing proposed marine conservation and fisheries management measures.

Since 2005, Oceana has carried out 29 oceanographic expeditions in 28 countries, and approximately 3000 surveys. They have filmed more than 2000 hours of video of marine habitats and species from Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean waters. These videos, together with still images and with samples from more than 500 grabs, have yielded new information and understanding of the biodiversity present in the many areas where Oceana has carried out expeditions in Europe. Many of these data have contributed to Oceana efforts to create or expand marine protected areas; to date, these efforts have led to the protection of 73 028 km² of marine area in countries such as Finland, Malta, Portugal and Spa

EO4WILDLIFE PLATFORM FOR WILDLIFE MONITORING

The EO4wildlife platform was developed with fundings from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The EO4wildlife platform is developed for wildlife scientists, biologists, ecologists, ornithologists involved in the conservation, protection and management of marine wildlife and willing to improve their knowledge of animal habitat and behaviour. The platform allows the user to upload his own animal data (observation, ARGOS tracking data and other) in his private workspace, and acces to earth observation data through a series of thematic services running on a cloud infrastructure. Using the services deployed on the platform, the user can retrieve Earth Observation (EO) data from the Copernicus Marine Service, the CLS datastore and other sources and calculate EO statistics along its animal tracks or on a specified area. This EO data will then be used for habitat modelling or environmental assessment.

The objective of the marine protected areas is to protect 20% of the ocean. EO4WILDLIFE is a 3 year project with 7 partners (CLS, ATOS France , ATOS Spain, IT Innovation, AFB, Birdlife and University of Exeter) that ended in December 2018. The EO4willife platform facilitates the access to all the Copernicus Marine Service data and to 60 products from the CLS datastore, and match them with sientific data bases from Birdlife and seaturtle.org. For example, more than 10 million bird locations are stored in the seabirdtracking database managed by Birdlife. Moreover, the seaturtle.org stores more than 6000 turtles trajectories all tracked with ARGOS (10 years of Argos location data are collected)

COPERNICUS MARINE FOR MARITIME SPATIAL PLANNING: THE PLASMAR PROJECT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The PLASMAR Project, lead by IU-ECOAQUA at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is addressing Marine Spatial Planning through an ecosystem-based approach adapted to the biogeographic characteristics of the Macaronesian Region (Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands). In short, it is about promoting the development of Blue Growth sectors while ensuring the conservation of natural marine heritage. PLASMAR bases its activities on the development of robust methodologies and tools funded on scientific knowledge, supported with marine and maritime spatial data and information. From the Copernicus Marine Service, PLASMAR project has used standardized global products with inter-regional coverage (the whole Macaronesia). These are homogeneous products in terms of quality, spatial and temporal resolution, thus filling the oceanographic information requirements of the project for the immense marine extension of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands. In summary, four CMEMS products have been used, focusing on 17 variables, generating 77 by-products.

Marine spatial planning (MSP) is a process that brings together multiple users of the ocean to make informed and coordinated decisions about how to use marine resources sustainably. The European Parliament and the Council have adopted legislation to create a common framework for maritime spatial planning in Europe. Data gathered in the PLASMAR include: marine parameters defined by Marine Strategy Framework Directive, marine protected areas, land and marine use spatial information and oceanographic data (EMODnet, INSPIRE, EIONET and COPERNICUS MARINE SERVICE, and national, regional and local spatial data infrastructures such as GRAFCAN, IDE IEO, IDEE, SIGMAR, SNIMAR).

Four products have been used in which mean, maximum, minimum, 10th and 90th percentiles values have been calculated.

Additionally, for variables such as currents and wind, directions and speeds have also been calculated. The resulting NetCDF files have been converted to Shapefile format to become part of the GIS database and are now being used as an essential part of the analyses carried out in PLASMAR project.

BUILDING UNIFORM OCEAN ACIDITY MAPS FROM SCATTERED INSITU DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

On the one hand, the Copernicus Marine Service provides with pH in situ observations that are scattered, i.e. not available as a full coverage map but as discrete points over the globe. On the other hand, SeaDataNet provides with an interplation tool (Data-Interpolating Variational Analysis service, DIVA) allowing to map global, uniform distributions of pH from the Copernicus Marine Service scattered in situ data. However, the SeaDataNet service is not compliant with the Copernicus marine Service in situ data formats. Researchers from ISTI-CNR with funding from the H2020 BlueBridge project have developed the D4Science e-Infrastructure which creates a bridge between several e-Infrastructures to fill the gap between them. As for the ocean acidification monitoring case, the D4Science process can transform a set of Copernicus in situ marine observations of an acidification parameter into a uniform global distribution map, published on a data catalogue under standard geographical representation formats (e.g. Web Map Service). Benefit for users and scientists are numerous among which the data sharing and the scientific publishing facilities.

PREDICTING THE HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION OF GIANT SQUID CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Architeuthis dux belongs to the family of giant squids which are difficult to observe in the nature. Very little is known about their habitat and worlwide distribution in the oceans. Predicting the habitat and distribution of this species is important from a biological conservation perspective. Researchers from ISTI-CNR with funding from the H2020 BlueBridge project have developed an approach to estimate the potential distribution of A. dux at global scale, with relative high resolution (1-degree). They have developed a so-called "niche model" that estimates species distribution and have become widely used in conservation biology.

Their approach relies on a complex preparation phase, which improves the reliability of presence, absence and environmental data correlated to the species habitat. The datasets come from several sources among which the Copernicus Marine Service Global model mass concentration of chlorophyll and nitrates.

Results show that their approach gives good estimate of the distribution of A. dux. They also explain how their approach can be generalized and extended to other rare species.

The giant squid (genus Architeuthis) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size due to deep-sea gigantism: recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 m for females and 10 m for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles. The number of different giant squid species has been debated, but recent genetic research suggests that only one species exists. In 2004, Japanese researchers took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat, and in July 2012, a live adult was first filmed in its natural habitat.

OCEAN NOISE MAPPING IN SUPPORT TO EU AND INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The adoption of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic products and services. Quonops© Online Services, by Quiet-Oceans, provides noise monitoring and prediction tools. It produces an estimate of the spatio-temporal distribution of noise levels generated by human activities at sea and assesses source contributions to the global noise field. It provides for example real time noise and monthly statistical noise maps from shipping. It also allows mapping scenarios of noisy activities at sea to predict their impacts. The outputs are tailored to the requirements of regulations such as the EU MSFD directive. Based on physical acoustic propagation models, Quonops© considers the reality of the area through input data gathered from numerous sources. The adoption of the Marine Directive which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic. Attention has been raised on the topic of underwater noise and its effects on marine life. Yet, the effects of underwater noise are not fully understood. Some underwater noise can be heard by marine life over hundreds of kilometers.

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union. Its mission is to provide high quality statistics for Europe. Eurostat will publish in 2018 new official environmental indicators, among which indicators on the ocean acidity and PH. In this frame, Copernicus Marine Service will reinforce its in situ and ocean model capacity by the end of 2018 for an improved monitoring of the carbon cycle at global and regional scales. Once achieved, Eurostat, for its indicator computation, will use ocean PH and acidity products from the Copernicus Marine Service portfolio in all European regional seas. On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic United Nations (UN) Summit, officially came into force. Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind. Among the 17 Goals, the 14th (called SGD14) is dedicated to the Oceans: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

AquaMar, an FP7 research project (2009-2013), is the R&D branch of MarCoast and provides Earth Observation (EO) based water quality services to support European and national monitoring agencies and industries operating in coastal waters. It develops water quality downstream services supporting the EU Water Framework Directive, monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), marine coastal infrastructure projects, aquaculture precision farming and bathing waters quality. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour satellite data are used by the MarCoast Ocean Colour Data service to provide value-added services to the public sector organisations responsible for implementing policies at European, national and regional levels.

UNDERSTANDING THE BEHAVIOUR OF ELEPHANT SEALS AT SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

CEBC is a French laboratory from the French research centre (CNRS) specialising in wildlife habitat studies and working in particular on Southern Ocean marine fauna. CEBC tags marine animals (e.g. elephant seals) with Argos beacons in order to follow their routes and monitor their feeding behaviour. CEBC uses satellite data, in particular altimetry, to study the animal environment. Christophe Guinet from CEBC says that the Copernicus Marine Service satellite altimetry data provides us with essential information to understand how elephant seals move, where they travel and feed with respect to ocean currents and eddy structures. Year-to-year variations with long-term datasets can be compared with our 14-year tracking of elephant seals, to understand the impact of climate change on this species. Also to be noted is that the temperature and salinity data recorded on elephant seal beacons are distributed in the Copernicus Marine Service in-situ products.

Before the Argos beacon era, marine mammal behavior at sea such as elephant seals was fully unknown. Since 1992, several animals were followed each year (elephant seals, royal, emperor or macaroni penguins, albatrosses, etc.), thus providing with elements of assessment about climate change impacts on wildlife.

CLS and CNR have developed a model to predict oceanic biomass of 6 micronekton groups as part of the OSMOSIS project.

Micronektons are eaten by predators such as marine mammals, turtles and tuna, hence modelling micronekton behaviour helps with the monitoring of its predators. Micronekton are relatively small but actively swimming oceanic organisms ranging in size between plankton (< 2 cm), which drift with the currents, and larger nekton (> 10 cm), which have the ability to swim freely without being overly affected by currents. Modelled hindcasting and forecasting of micronekton movements contribute to the further simulation of the habitats of higher trophic level predators (e.g. marine mammals, turtles, tuna). Patrick Lehodey from CLS says that "Copernicus Marine Service ocean temperature and currents products are key inputs for our model, as the development and migration of micronekton are strongly linked to temperature and ocean currents respectively. We also use Copernicus Marine Service global high-resolution models to validate our micronekton model.

Marine food chain can be described with 4 levels, from Plants (Photo-Autotroph), to Herbivores, then to Carnivores, and finally to Top Predators that are simply larger and faster than most of their competitors. Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) is a public institution in Chile, which supports the sustainable development of the country fishing & aquaculture sector. It has developed an oceanographic operational system for southern Chile that is used to better manage this ecosystem and its fishery & aquaculture activities. Since 2014, Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) has initiated a program for the implementation of an operational system, whose main objective is to generate forecasts of oceanographic variables in the fjord and canal area of southern Chile. In this area, aquaculture plays an important social and economical role, but lacks adequate environmental management.

That is why this operational system in its first stage seeks to solve the local hydrodynamics, what will enable in the mid-term to couple it with biogeochemical modules. DEVELOPING AFRICA'S CAPACITY IN FISHERY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT WITH MESA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Monitoring of Environment and Security in Africa programme (MESA) builds on the results obtained in PUMA and AMESD and will be a first contribution to the GMES and Africa Initiative.

Launched in 2012, MESA will run until 2018 and received funding of EUR 37 million from the European Union. Beneficiary Countries of MESA program are 48 ACP countries of five African Regions, namely CEMAC, ECOWAS, IGAD, IOC and SADC. In particular, MESA propose 2 new services in the ECOWAS region (West African States), namely support to fishery resource management and forecasting of ocean conditions. Copernicus Marine Service's contribution to this project consists of the provision ocean model and satellite products for both services (Sea Surface Temperature and Currents, Ocean Colour data, In Situ data for validation) which allow the publication of monthly bulletins including maps of potential fishing zones and oceanic conditions. It benefits to fishermen and policy makers to better manage fishery resources along the western African coast.

The MESA programme was proposed through the Ouagadougou Declaration signed in September 2010 by the African Union Commission, the ACP Secretariat and the African Regional Economic Communities. The aim of the programme is to ensure continuity of past investments on the use of Earth Observation data in Africa (e.g. PUMA and AMESD) and to provide an initial contribution to the GMES and Africa Initiative, which was called upon through the Maputo Declaration in October 2006 and included in the Joint EU-Africa Strategy as of December 2007.

ACRI-ST and 7 partners have developed products, tools and services for the aquaculture and fishing industries in the framework of the FP7-SAFI project. Indicators and tools collecting data from various sources such as the Ocean Colour and Sea Surface Temperature satellite products from the Copernicus Marine Service are available to aquaculture farmers and fishing-related industries. Such dashboards help them with their daily decision making, for example to optimise site location selection for shellfish growth, or to monitor water quality. Hull performance refers to the impact of hull and propeller on the fuel efficiency of a ship. Deterioration in hull and propeller performance between dry-dockings currently accounts for around 10% of world fleet fuel cost and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions. Most vessels leave dry dock with hull and propeller in a good condition. However, on account of a combination of biofouling and mechanical damage, hull and propeller performance begin to deteriorate. Vessel operators can reduce their fuel costs and emission significantly if proven quality coatings and a standardized approach along with data driven solutions are used and implemented.

DESIGNING MORE ROBUST SHIPS THANKS TO WAVE DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Damen Shipyards is building 165 ships per year. These ships operate in all kind of environmental sea conditions. The structures of a ship has to carry the loads from the outside environment and is designed to last at least 20 years. Additionally the hulls have to be light to ensure fuel efficiency. The ship structure is therefore optimized for efficiency and safety. During the design of new ships the development team of Damen Shipyards is therefore focusing on predicting the fatigue life of these ships as accurately as possible. To be able to predict the fatigue life more accurately our prediction methods are continuously improved by our research team. The new fatigue models developed by Damen are using the global wave model data from the Copernicus Marine Service.

Wave conditions along AIS (Automatic Identification System) tracks are extracted in order to know the real wave conditions encountered. Based on this input the fatigue life consumption for each ship is predicted. In the future, Damen is planning to get the wave conditions along the AIS tracks in real time to remotely monitor for their clients the ship fatigue and fuel consumption over time.

A harsh ocean environment with strong winds and waves over decades of use causes significant wear and tear on ship hull and structures. The angle from which waves hit a platform, and the wave height are important factors, but in addition the wave frequency is an important factor due to the resonance frequency of the structure itself. Running fatigue models is an approach for risk assessment of the ultimate strength of a ship hull structure degraded by corrosion and fatigue.

DEVELOPING EO-BASED DEMONSTRATION SERVICES FOR PUBLIC AUTHORITIES: MARINE-EO CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Marine-EO is an H2020 project which procures through the PCP instrument (Pre-Commercial Procurement) the development of EO-based demonstration services for Public Authorities in Europe.

Those various services procured are in the field of Marine Environment monitoring (called SATOCEAN services) such as support to MSFD EU Directive, support to the Aquaculture sector and Ship routing in the Arctic polar region. Other services procured cover the maritime surveillance field (called SATSURVEILLANCE services) contributing to the development of EUROSUR regulation.

Marine-EO teams up a group of 5 maritime authorities (the buyers group) and a group of 4 prestigious scientific and technical organizations with significant experience in EO and maritime matters (the technical advisors) to achieve the following objectives: Develop, test and validate two sets of EO-based services, support the transfer of the above mentioned EO services to operational services, and strengthen transnational collaboration in maritime awareness sector. The SATOCEAN services are developed with the support of the Copernicus Marine Service products.

D-ICE activities on ship routing covers 3 services. *First, statistical routing studies enabling its customers to validate a project (business model, extreme weather conditions, ship performance...) with a large amount of calculations. *Then, D-ICE operational team provides metocean and routing support for shipping companies during navigations. *Finally, OCEANiCS (OCEAN Intelligent Control System) is an embedded system enabling both ship control and weather routing.

Main objective are environmental impact reduction and improvement of navigation safety. Our multi-objective algorithms optimize ship route and ship velocity along the transit, considering wind, waves and current. Application covers also sailing teams, which are interested in advanced routing as their ships are becoming more and more extreme. Copernicus Marine Service data from global to regional modelling are crucial for D-ICE customers. Todays used datasets are waves, wind and ocean currents, but further developments will take benefits from satellites images, ice forecasts or nebulosity.

Route planning has always been a crutial issue for the shipping industry to manage logistics. Today, route optimization is at stake to decrease fuel consumption, operate safely the vessels and address risk management with due regard to environment.

Shipping industry indeed represents 3% of today global CO2 emission, and should reach 17% in 2050 if nothing is done. Global policies and IMO are thus starting to handle it and legiferate shipping industry. The OCEANiCS ship routing service offers new perspectives enabling multiobjective optimization for motor, sailing and hybrid propulsion. Fuel savings for motor ships are from 5 to 15% depending on the projects.

CGG collects seismic data to image the subsurface of the Earth. At sea, this data is acquired by deploying large spreads of sensors: up to 14 cables separated by 100m each and up to 10km in length are towed between 7m and 50m below the sea surface. These operations can be affected by environmental conditions (sea current, swell, wind). Access to relevant marine information, through services like CMEMS, is essential to operation performance and safety. The oceanographic information is used at different stages of an acquisition. During preparation, past statistical data is processed to assess ocean conditions, identify risks and anticipate possible performance issues. During surveys, the global understanding of the ocean dynamics is needed to set correct equipment and sensors parameters, make real time decisions for managing the environmental risks, and ideally for optimizing acquisition strategy. Specifically, acoustic propagation parameters are based on water column information, the steering of the acquisition spread requires a good multilayer current anticipation, and accurate weather forecast ensures safe management and protection of the equipment.

GREAT CIRCLE, a Belgian startup, has developed a sailing navigation software (SQUID) that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. Great Circle works with most of the leading offshore teams and race management offices around the world, including the Vendée Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, Route du Rhum and America Cup. SQUID is software that lets the user download and view the GRIB weather files and does the routing with the isochronic method. SQUID can also display satellite images (visible imagery, infrared, water vapour and colour composite) and retrieve synoptic charts and observations (SYNOP, METAR and scatterometry). Maritime transport accounts for more than 80% of international freight transport. Ship weather routing is widely used. But routing by the current remains recent and innovative. The emergence of new operational ocean forecasts makes it possible to better understand the mesoscale dynamics of the upper ocean and to provide optimized and qualified forecasts when combined with innovative data processing methods. Using surface current for ship routing in areas where the weather conditions do not prevail may allow to save about 1% of the fuel consumption.

SAILGRIB SHIP-ROUTING APPLICATION

SAILGRIB, a French startup, has developed a sailing navigation app available from the Google Play Store that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. As of Jan 2017, the application was being used by more than 10,000 racers and leisure sailors every week. The app success is steadily increasing as the number of downloads is doubling every year. Most users (70%) are European.

SailGrib algorithms are based on the isochrones method tweaked for running on Android phones or tablets. Henri Laurent from SailGrib says that in order to get reliable routing, accurate inputs such as polar plots showing boat speed, weather and ocean current forecasts are needed. The latter are provided by the Copernicus Marine Service high quality analysis and forecast products for the Global Ocean, the Iberia-Biscay-Irish Seas, the European North West Shelves, the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas.

Salinity gradient power is the energy available from the difference in the salt concentration between seawater and river water. Such high salinity gradients are usually located at the mouth of main rivers and can result in the production of electrity. Europe is a pioneer in this new type of marine renewable energy prototype.

Salinity gradient resource characterization in the global ocean is critical for both renewable energy project developers and policy makers alike. It allows the industry to identify the right markets and sites to install ocean energy technologies, and informs decision makers for a more relevant energy policy and better marine spatial planning. The University of Edinburgh made significant contributions to improving knowledge of salinity gradient resources. Pr. Medina-Lopez from University of Edinburgh uses Sentinel-2 satellite data, in situ measurements and machine learning techniques (neural nodes) to produce high resolution maps of sea surface salinity and sea surface temperature at the mouth of main rivers in the global ocean. She uses the Copernicus Marine in situ products at regional and global scales.

Wello started designing wave energy converters in 2008. Its devices called Penguins are unique in the wave energy landscape.

The asymmetrical shape of their hull creates a gyrating motion which pushes a rotating mass inside the device with each passing wave. The converter turns it into electrical power, immediately transferred to the grid by a sub-sea cable. Wello is also one of the first wave energy companies to develop a project outside of Europe. With its 10 MW capacity, the Nusa Lembongan site in Indonesia is currently the largest in-the-works wave-energy park in the world. BLUERISE: OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY RESOURCE ANALYSIS

Covering seventy percent of our globe, the oceans are the world largest solar collectors. This solar energy is captured as heat in the upper layers of the oceans. From the natural temperature difference that exists between the upper and deep layers of the ocean, energy can be extracted. This is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and is in particular of interest in the tropics where it can be instrumental in helping islands and coastal regions in achieving a sustainable future. It is considered among the biggest renewable energy sources. Using the ocean database of Copernicus Marine Service, Bluerise in collaboration with TU Delft, has evaluated the year round and ten year average ocean characteristics in the Caribbean analyzing the ocean currents, density and temperature profiles over depth. Particular attention was spent on ocean upwelling and seasonal fluctuations. Bluerise has developed a model, using the data from the Copernicus Marine Service, to analyze oceanographic features such as natural ocean current patterns and their variability relevant for OTEC. This enables a quick assessment of the feasibility of OTEC locations.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a renewable electricity source that uses the natural temperature difference in tropical oceans between the surface water and deep water. The technology can transform a temperature difference of 20 °C or more into clean, reliable, and predictable base load electricity.

Tropical regions, with population centers near the coast, have ideal conditions to deploy OTEC technology to fully meet their rapidly growing energy needs. Although tropical regions currently account for less than 30% of the current global energy demand, the tropics will become the most significant energy market within the next 20 years.

TIDAL ENERGY ASSESSMENT - TIDEA

To date, there is no global solution providing a first level of information for ocean renewable energy site assessments for tidal energy devices (tidal current speed, tidal elevation, tidal power).

NOVELTIS has developed a unique solution to provide this information: TidEA, Tidal Energy Assessment. TidEA is a free of charge decision-making tool to identify the most suitable sites for the development of tidal energy and also to characterize in detail the resource of the various sites of interest through the provision of relevant indicators calculated by NOVELTIS teams and validated using products (in situ data, elevation data) provided by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS, marine.copernicus.eu). TiDEA lists all the worldwide coastal regions and offers data up to 100 meters deep. For each selected site, you will find the maximum current speeds, the power density and the indicators of occurrence of some specific speed thresholds. TidEA is used by different types of end-users : NAVAL GROUP and SABELLA for the tidal energy project development and KRAKEN SUBSEA for their business development.

SUPPORT TO EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES FOR DEEP SEA MINING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

SAGRES Project is an innovative and disruptive approach developed by ISQ that focus on the conception and validation of an algorithm that supports decision to prospection and exploration (P&E) activities related with deep sea mineral (DSM) resources based on satellite information, and complemented by in-situ data, including CMEMS data. The fusion and analysis of these data can be used as approximation vectors towards mineralization in order to enhance location, delineation and ranking of potential P&E target areas related with the occurrence of DSM resources such as manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulphide deposits. By using this approach, SAGRES Project expects to increase P&E discovery success rates, optimize campaigns time, reduce P&E uncertainty and costs, and provide baseline information related to the environmental impact of this activity. The preliminary and ongoing results are very promising, and show for several areas considered in the North Atlantic Ocean a significant forecast capacity performed by the algorithm.

In the case of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, the algorithm results show 77% of certainty in its forecasted capability. The distribution of the algorithm predicted points are in good agreement with the depth range considered appropriated for the economically viable occurrence of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. The SAGRES Project ongoing approach can therefore contribute to smarter ocean exploration missions.

For instance, the provision of data on temperature, salinity, and concentration of oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll in sea water at several depth ranges and fairly high resolution grids are important to better constraint and enhance the forecast capability of the SAGRES Project algorithm.

A SYSTEM FOR PREDICTING GLOBAL AND REGIONAL TIDAL CURRENTS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

NOVELTIS is a private French service company specialized in space, environment, sustainable development and technological innovations. The company has developed a global and regional tidal currents prediction system called TIPS targeting the Marine Renewable Energy sector and its tidal turbines. NOVELTIS has built a regional tidal model that uses Data Assimilation Techniques to incorporate satellite and in-situ observations into their model.

This technique can be used to correct the NOVELTIS ocean model to be closer to observed conditions and to improve forecasting accuracy. The NOVELTIS data assimilation system uses Satellite Sea Level data from the Copernicus Marine Service and uses in-situ observed Sea Level data, also from the Copernicus Marine Service, to validate the results. F. ADDRESSING MARINE POLLUTION FROM OIL SPILLS WITH EFFECTIVE DISPERSION MODELLING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

As part of the UKSA funded EASOS project, Riskaware has developed an oil spill dispersion model to help the Malaysian government tackle marine pollution. Pollution from oil spills is a major issue for the Malaysian government, who are responsible for monitoring and policing the Malacca Straits, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The Riskaware's model supports informed decision making by predicting the areas which will be affected when an oil spill is reported. Mitigation strategies can also be simulated to assess the best course of action, and there is a source estimation capability to help identify ships who choose to pollute deliberately. Using the Copernicus Marine Service high quality global forecasts, Riskaware have been able to extend their capability beyond Malaysia to model oil spills anywhere in the world, allowing many other countries to potentially benefit from the service.

Riskaware's oil dispersion model capability includes a web-based user interface which brings to together the reporting of oil spills and the model results. Through the interface, users now have a centralised system for viewing all current and historic oil spill incidents. It is possible to view the predicted concentration levels of oil both in the water and on the coast. The source estimation capability makes use of the latest Bayesian mathematics techniques to identify potential sources where the oil could have originated. A trial of the model is expected to start in Malaysia shortly.

WEB BASED DRIFT SCENARIO INTERFACE

CLS is a French private company developing products and services in various sectors including maritime safety. CLS has developed a new web based drift modelling service that allows users to set up drift scenarios for oil, garbage and Search&Rescue purposes. Via a web mapping interface, the user selects the location and time period as well as specific parameters such as number of particles, horizontal diffusion and type of scenario. The model results are then immediately available for visualization on the web mapping interface and auxiliary features allow the user to properly plan operation to contain a position or recover an object lost at sea. The web based tool allows users to quickly access critical information to optimize the recovery of objects, pollutants or persons. The user friendly aspect of the drift module means that very little training is required to properly and efficiently operate the system. CLS computes surface velocities thanks to the Copernicus Marine Service product, as well as on other sources. The CMEMS Global Ocean model currents are used for this application.

IMPROVING SONAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENCE VESSELS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) under the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) are collaborating in order to improve underwater sonar communications between the Dutch Ministry of Defence?s sea-going vessels. The performance of a given sonar is critical for self protection. DMO and TNO have developed a sonar performance model, the most complex aspect of which by far is the propagation of sound in the ocean. Such models need to take into account the refraction of sound due to oceanic temperature and salinity variation in the water column, the reflection of sound at the surface, the influence of roughness (wave spectrum, wind speed, sea surface temperature) and bubble content at the surface, as well as the reflection of sound at the seabed. The DMO and TNO use the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Global models as an input source for ocean density (temperature and salinity) in their sonar performance model. Gert Vlaming from DMO says that "we also soon expect to use the wave products from the Copernicus Marine Service".

BACKTRACKING OF MH370 TRAJECTORY FROM LA RéUNION

In March 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished in the South Indian Ocean with 239 passengers and crew on board.

Debris has since washed up on the East African coast and on Indian Ocean islands, brought there by the ocean currents and winds. Thanks to the location of debris and the knowledge of the ocean currents and winds from numerical models, it is possible to trace their movements back to a possible location for the plane crash. Several research and oceanographer teams from GEOMAR (GER), ECMWF (UK), MERCATOR OCEAN (FR), NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHY CENTER (UK) and CMCC (IT) have used these calculations to run computer oceanic models back in time, from the time the debris washed up on land back to the time the plane disappeared. These studies were able to come up with a possible location of where the plane had crashed, with a large error bar nevertheless. The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service global ocean model, including data of global surface currents and winds over the past two years, was used in these studies.

The search began in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, and was soon extended to the Strait of Malacca and Andaman Sea. EXWEXs is a private company that provides high-resolution wind forecast to answer the oil&gaz, aviation, shipping and defense sectors and their issues related to extreme meteorological and climatic events. EXWEXs also provides routing services for sailing races such as the America cup. In 2017, EXWEXs was the official weather supplier of the team "Emirates team New Zealand" that won the cup. Convection is one of the major processes driving our weather.

Convection is one cause of rising air in our atmosphere, usually warm air rises above cold air. Convection is the principle motor of cloud formation and circulation on all scales as warm moist air is going upwards and colder, drier and denser air will be sinking downwards. In general, convection is the vertical transport and imply vertical motion. Evidence of convection happening in our atmosphere is seen with the formation and growth of cumulus clouds as well as strong winds and squall lines. Their understanding and physical representation or parameterisation are crucial to allow an accurate local weather and wind forecast.

DATA.AWI.DE: A ONE-STOP SHOP PORTAL

Over the last 2 decades, the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research has been continuously committed to develop and sustain an eResearch infrastructure for coherent discovery, view, dissemination, and archival of scientific data and information in polar and marine regions. Most of the data collected by scientists originates from research activities carried out on a wide variety of research platforms operated by AWI (vessels, aircraft, stations, buoys, moorings, in-situ ocean floor stations, drones, and ocean floor crawling systems). Archival and publishing in the information system PANGAEA along with DOI assignment to individual datasets is a typical end-of-line for most data producers. AWI has built O2A, a generic and cost-effective framework compliant with OGC standards, assuring interoperability at international level. The AWI DATA Portal http://data.awi.de is a key component with its one-stop-shop web interface supporting scientists in the discovery of various types of scientific content associated with AWI research platform. Some CMEMS Ocean Wind satellite data are displayed within this interface.

OCEAN CURRENTS IN SUPPORT TO GLIDERS PILOTING

Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) are used in oceanography thanks to their low cost and wide range of capabilities, in order to sample water profiles and support in situ ocean monitoring. Gliders are UUV that can change their buoyancy to dive and climb in the water column, describing a vertical saw tooth route. They get an effective but low horizontal speed and as result are strongly sensitive to ocean dynamics. Therefore, an effective path planning is needed to route them using ocean data. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has developed a smart visualization and piloting management tool (named PINZON-4D), that has been largely tested and exploited in the so-called Challenger glider operations. This smart viewing ocean data tool is based on Google Earth and generates continuous and discretized information about the bathymetry, 3D salinity, temperature and currents. The Copernicus Marine Service IBI and GLOBAL ocean model forecast products are used by the PINZON-4D in real time, and has been extremely useful information during the glider crossing missions.

The first glider expedition that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 was a glider called Scarlet Knight. It was led by the Rutgers University (NOAA, TWR, IOOS) supported by Puertos del Estado and the Robotic & computational Oceanography Division (SITMA-ULPGC). Eight years later, the Challenger glider completed 6 crossing missions, including the first circumnavigation of the South Atlantic (2013 to 2016). It has now gathered more than 15,000 CTD sampling profiles. It is led by the Rutgers University (NOAA, IOOS, TWR, SITMA-ULPGC) supported by Puertos del Estado (Spain), Marine Institute (Ireland), Univ. of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Univ. of South Africa and the UTM of Western Australia.

SEASONAL FORECASTING AT ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. The ocean data assimilation system is a crucial component of ECMWF Earth system approach. It produces both real-time and reanalysed ocean states and it relies on the assimilation of conventional and satellite observations. In particular, radar altimeter sea-level anomaly (SLA) data assimilation improves the representation of the seasonal and inter-annual variability of sea level, which is important for extended to seasonal range weather forecasts. In February 2017, ECMWF has concluded an agreement with the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) which formalises the terms under which CMEMS provides the Centre with its satellite sea-level anomaly products for ocean data assimilation into ECMWF system.

The El Niño acts to redistribute heat and precipitation over the globe. It bestows beneficial effects on economies as well as negative effects. In the United States, for example, researchers have estimated that the 1997-1998 El Niño pattern inflicted costs of approximately $4 billion, but was offset by $19 billion in benefits. SEASONAL FORECASTING AT MéTéO-FRANCE

Météo-France, the French meteorology agency, provides seasonal forecasts for many applications such as hydroelectric energy production management in Sweden and food security early warning systems in Ethiopia, among many others. Predicting ocean behaviour is essential, especially in the tropics, in order to provide accurate seasonal forecasts. Météo-France modelling techniques are based on ocean-atmosphere coupled models and simulations are performed both in real time and for a long reference period in the past. Patrick Josse from Météo-France says that High quality consistent initial oceanic states are needed, both in real time and over the last 25 years and are provided by the Copernicus Marine Service 3D global model product and also the high quality Sea Surface Temperature satellite product. Those two CMEMS products provide key input for seasonal forecasting activities.

NAUSICAA: DISCOVER THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Nausicaá, the French national sea center in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, focuses on exploring the marine environment, on understanding the relationship between man and the sea. With provisions of giant fish tanks, undersea exploration, and cutting-edge technology, all contributing to a sophisticated setting, it presents its visitors with a wide variety of information to understand and learn better. Nausicaá showcases exhibitions that are under constant improvements and renewals to inspire people to discover and love the sea. As an initiator and promoter of the Blue Society, it offers new solutions from the ocean. It is the largest aquarium in Europe. It was inaugurated in the year 1991 and has been considered since 1998 as the Centre of Excellence in Marine Environment Education by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The interactive and tactile application using the Copernicus Marine Service data has been been adopted since 2016 in the aquarium to inform the visitors about ocean evolutions in an educational and scientific way.

Nausicaá is the largest museum in Europe. It holds 60,000 creatures, 1600 different species, and 17,000m3 of water; its large viewing panel is 100m². It has received 17,000 million visitors in 28 years. Nausicaá's center has realized six European projects to raise awareness and valorize the Blue economy.

It has been rewarded several times. Among these, Nausicaá has been awarded in 2008 for implementing medical training for the care of sea lions. With the help of a veterinary surgeon who specializes in the wellbeing of sharks, it conducted the world's first surgical operation on a sandbar shark belonging to Nausicaá.

Children for the Oceans is a non-profit association that aims to protect the ocean. Created in 2018, after a worldwide sailing tour made by its founder, this organization has been supported by Mercator Ocean International and Copernicus Marine Service from the beginning for the deliverance of scientific accurate knowledge.

Thanks to a young ambassador's network, Children for the Oceans presents awareness sessions worldwide focusing on three major threats: acidification, overfishing, and plastic pollution. It informs as many children as possible in the hope that an educated child today will be an aware citizen tomorrow. The sessions have been delivered in Madera, the Netherlands, the United States, England, Senegal, Spain, and Norway. Founder Thomas Lesage focuses on fighting pollution by partaking in international political conferences to highlight the importance of ocean protection for the young generation. During these international conferences, he tries to remind decision-makers that children need to be included in the decision processes

Indeed, every year, around 8 million tons of plastic is dumped in the ocean and 29% of commercial fish stocks are over exploited within the EU. Besides, acidification has been increasing, threatening diverse ecosystems and shellfish such as coral reefs. With the help of snowball effect, kids can inform most of their family members and thus have a more sustainable effect to preserve the ocean. Today, about 1000 children are assisted in an awareness session delivered by Children for the Oceans.

Coral Guardian is a non-profit founded in 2012 that aims to restore coral ecosystems by implicating local communities through a worlwide network of coral restoration, to raise awareness at an international level, and to participate in scientific discoveries. The organisation underlines the importance of a social, environmental and scientific approach to marine conservation. Coral Guardian launched the Blue Center to expand its participatory marine conservation model worldwide. Science contributes to this whole model especially through the scientific monitoring of the organisation's restoration techniques and the collection of data specific to coral ecosystems.

In 40 years, 40% of corals have already disappeared and scientists agree that if nothing is done before 2050, they could all disappear.

COMBATTING PLASTIC POLLUTION: EMILY PENN EXXPEDITION

Emily Penn is a sailor and ocean advocate whose goal is to struggle against plastic and toxics pollution. As a sailor, she witnessed contamination and decided to create eXXpedition, an all-female expedition aiming at collecting plastic samples , delivering awareness sessions and finding solutions to negative environmental and health issues created by single-used plastics.

Exxpedition aims at fighting plastic contamination by building a global network of multidisciplinary women who can contribute to world-class scientific studies. Emily Penn's work has helped inform to the global knowledge about plastic in the ocean, contributing data to 27 different studies with partner organisations around the world.

Former expeditions have led to understand better the endemic nature of microplastics. From 2019 to 2021, as a wish to know better the plastic issue as a whole, Emily Pen eXXpedition "Round the World" will circumnavigate the globe via four ocean Gyres and the Arctic.

Plastic has been contaminating and destroying marine ecosystem for years.

Since 2014, the eXXpedition crew has conducted 11 expeditions to understand the causes of and solutions to plastic pollution, collecting 75 samples across the Atlantic, the Amazon, the Carribean, Great Britain, the North Pacific. EXXpedition has now embarked on its most ambitious mission yet, circumnavigating the world collecting microplastics samples from the surface of the ocean, the subsurface, the subtidal sediment and back on land to understand where it's coming from and how we can stop the tap.

Mercator Ocean and CMEMS provide eXXpedition drift calculations using ocean current data to locate the concentration of plastics in the five oceanic gyres. This image showcases that sea level has been rising up to 10 millimeters (i.e. 1 cm) around some of the Pacific islands during the time period 1993-2017. In this chapter the authors examine the question: How can one survive on pacific atolls? The GEOdetective book contains 8 courses built around real-life issues involving exercises, experiments, field trips and field work. The teaching model used in the book puts a case at the center, from which students analyze the problem from different angles. A natural red thread arises allowing the student to formulate a qualified answer. The book's course is based on questions among which 3 are related to the ocean: How can one survive on Pacific atolls? What happens when the ice melts? Why are plastic islands formed in the oceans?

Sea level rises on average over the globe of 1.2 mm per year. This trend has been estimated from 2005 to 2016, over the ocean depth layer 0-2000 meters. The uncertainty associated to this figure is of ± 0.2 mm/year. Sea level rise can seriously effect human populations in coastal and island regions and natural environments like marine ecosystems. Global mean and regional sea level is affected by natural climate variability, as well as by human-induced changes. Because of ocean warming and land ice mass loss, the sea level rises. Water expands when heated and about 30% of contemporary sea level rise can be attributed to this thermal expansion (i.e. thermosteric sea level).

OMI are free downloadable trends and data sets covering the past quarter of a century. These are key variables used to track the vital health signs of the ocean and changes in line with climate change.

COMBATING MARINE LITTER POLLUTION

The 7th Continent Expedition aims to build up awareness amongst general public, students as well as local industry and political stakeholders about the devastating impact of plastic waste dispersion in the ocean. Having studied plastic waste dispersion and accumulation in the ocean, the organisation strongly believes that public awareness and mobilisation must go hand-in-hand with research in order to put an end to this type of pollution. According to Patrick Deixonne, 7th Continent Expedition founder -We must all spread awareness about our impact on the ocean. Alexandra Ter Halle, CNRS chief scientist of the 7th Continent Expedition testifies that "Plastic debris is fragmented into tiny pieces (less than a millimetre) and is responsible for animal entanglement and the transport of invasive species and chemicals. CMEMS ocean model currents and sea level satellite maps allow us to locate plastic debris trapped in oceanic eddy structures, in order to sample and study its fragmentation".

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. Plastic has many attractive qualities which have led to an over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials have ultimately become waste with staying power. Plastic litter has become a large source of pollution, lethal to nature. The annual plastic production has increased globally of + 620% in the last 70 years. During year 2014, 311 million metrics tons of plastic were produced. In 2015, 5 to 13 million metric tons of plastic waste were available to enter into the ocean, through river discharge mainly.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide with 7-day forecast of 3D ocean currents updated daily relevant to find plastic convergence zones in the oceans.The global Ocean satellite sea level anomaly maps in real time and in the past are also used to find plastic convergence zones. It merges data from several satellites among which Sentinel-3.
