DESIGNING MORE ROBUST SHIPS THANKS TO WAVE DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Damen Shipyards is building 165 ships per year. These ships operate in all kind of environmental sea conditions. The structures of a ship has to carry the loads from the outside environment and is designed to last at least 20 years. Additionally the hulls have to be light to ensure fuel efficiency. The ship structure is therefore optimized for efficiency and safety. During the design of new ships the development team of Damen Shipyards is therefore focusing on predicting the fatigue life of these ships as accurately as possible. To be able to predict the fatigue life more accurately our prediction methods are continuously improved by our research team. The new fatigue models developed by Damen are using the global wave model data from the Copernicus Marine Service.

Wave conditions along AIS (Automatic Identification System) tracks are extracted in order to know the real wave conditions encountered. Based on this input the fatigue life consumption for each ship is predicted. In the future, Damen is planning to get the wave conditions along the AIS tracks in real time to remotely monitor for their clients the ship fatigue and fuel consumption over time.

A harsh ocean environment with strong winds and waves over decades of use causes significant wear and tear on ship hull and structures. The angle from which waves hit a platform, and the wave height are important factors, but in addition the wave frequency is an important factor due to the resonance frequency of the structure itself. Running fatigue models is an approach for risk assessment of the ultimate strength of a ship hull structure degraded by corrosion and fatigue.

DEVELOPING EO-BASED DEMONSTRATION SERVICES FOR PUBLIC AUTHORITIES: MARINE-EO CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Marine-EO is an H2020 project which procures through the PCP instrument (Pre-Commercial Procurement) the development of EO-based demonstration services for Public Authorities in Europe.

Those various services procured are in the field of Marine Environment monitoring (called SATOCEAN services) such as support to MSFD EU Directive, support to the Aquaculture sector and Ship routing in the Arctic polar region. Other services procured cover the maritime surveillance field (called SATSURVEILLANCE services) contributing to the development of EUROSUR regulation.

Marine-EO teams up a group of 5 maritime authorities (the buyers group) and a group of 4 prestigious scientific and technical organizations with significant experience in EO and maritime matters (the technical advisors) to achieve the following objectives: Develop, test and validate two sets of EO-based services, support the transfer of the above mentioned EO services to operational services, and strengthen transnational collaboration in maritime awareness sector. The SATOCEAN services are developed with the support of the Copernicus Marine Service products.

AN EASY AND COMPLETE WEATHER ROUTING AND NAVIGATION APPLICATION ON A TABLET CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Avalon Offshore has been launched in 2016 for both Apple iOS and Android. It is designed to provide a very complete navigation solution for cruisers and racers by providing in a simple app all the navigation functions needed by the boat skipper: weather routing, automatic weather sources, navigation monitoring, AIS targets, NMEA support, anchoring alarm and regatta module. To calculate precise routes, Avalon Offshore integrates a VPP calculator that will provide the skipper with reliable velocity predictions and automatic wheather sources that reduce transmission volumes and costs versus standard grib files.. Avalon Offshore routes are calculated by a proprietary algorithm, derived from the standard isochron algorithm which has already produced outstanding results during offshore regattas. From a cartographic viewpoints, Avalon support any type of raster maps as well as vectorial maps from Navionics. When calculating routes, Avalon Offshore uses tidal and oceanic currents provided by the Copernicus Marine Service.

Avalon drastically improves the safety by providing the skipper with the anticipated conditions of the planned cruise: wind, gust, waves, thunderstorms. They estimate that they can reduce the motoring time by about 30% by providing the skipper with a precise comparizon between the shortest distance and the smallest duration route. Travel duration error contained within 5% on 2 days cruises, thanks to the reliable boat velocity predictions computed by Avalon, assuming weather conditions are reasonably in line with forecasts.

Avalon Offshore uses current velocity forecasts for Iberia, Biscay and Ireland, Mediterranean Sea. Those predictions takes general weather forecasts into consideration and are therefore more precise than standard current atlases.

VOYOPT® - VOYAGE OPTIMIZATION

VoyOpt® (Voyage Optimization) is an innovative sail planning system developed by Offshore Navigation Ltd. This is an all-weather 24/7 surveillance and route plan system, that guides ships how to efficiently sail from one port to the next. These observations are able to compensate the weaknesses of one particular sensor by the characteristics of another. The sensor suite is chosen such that the sensors capabilities partly overlap and complement each other. The end-result is significantly better than relying your route planning on weather forecast models only.

The maritime industry seeks to optimize route plans for fuel reduction, vessel emission reduction and/or reduction in sailing time in an efficient manner. However, they do not have sufficient means to visualize the observations needed to develop such an optimized route plan. Nor do they have continuous observational updates with sufficient accuracy or numerical modelling capabilities. VoyOpt® is using EONav (Earth Observation Navigation) technology which fuses ship-specific parameters with real-time weather and seas state observations. FINDING BOAT ADRIFT DURING MINITRANSAT SAILING RACE

MetOcean Solutions is a science-based consultancy that offers specialist numerical modelling and analytical services in meteorology and oceanography. End of October 2017, MetOcean Solutions helped Pantaenius, the global yacht insurance company, find a missing yacht abandoned during the Mini Transat 6.50 race.

The yacht had been abandoned on 5 Oct off Spain Cape Finisterre.

Luca Sabiu, the yacht sailor, was airlifted out by helicopter by the Spanish navy. Pantaenius contacted MetOcean Solutions for advice on where the boat would drift to over the following 2-3 days during which strong winds and heavy seas would prevent its immediate salvage. MetOcean Solutions forecasted the drift trajectory of the boat taking into account the effect of the wind and current on the boat using a range of datasets, including currents from the CMEMS Global Ocean model. Drifting simulations using the CMEMS Global Ocean currents (and ECMWF winds) proved to be the most accurate, with the boat being effectively found within 2-3 nautical miles of the predicted position. Drift trajectory simulated with other than CMEMS ocean model gave much larger error in the boat location.

Founded in 1977, the Mini-Transat sailing race celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2017. This year edition starts on October 1st 2017 from La Rochelle in France and ends in La Martinique, French Antilles, with the participation of 84 men and women sailors from 15 nationalities. It is a 4050 nautical miles solo crossing race, on the smallest offshore racing boats (only 6.50 meter long). It is sailed in two legs: 1) The first one, from La Rochelle to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1350 miles long, 7 to 10 sailing days), 2) The 2700 miles long second leg start from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November (15 to 20 sailing days to reach Le Marin in La Martinique, French West Indies).

GREAT CIRCLE SHIP-ROUTING APPLICATION

GREAT CIRCLE, a Belgian startup, has developed a sailing navigation software (SQUID) that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. Great Circle works with most of the leading offshore teams and race management offices around the world, including the Vendée Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, Route du Rhum and America Cup. SQUID is software that lets the user download and view the GRIB weather files and does the routing with the isochronic method. SQUID can also display satellite images (visible imagery, infrared, water vapour and colour composite) and retrieve synoptic charts and observations (SYNOP, METAR and scatterometry). SQUID uses the Copernicus Marine Service sea-surface temperature satellite data as an input as well as ocean model currents for the Global ocean and Europeans Seas.

nauticAi is a Finnish maritime IoT-startup specialising in real-time situational awareness solutions. The core technology and concept is to combine multiple maritime data sources, such as IoT-sensor data, ship tracking data, company business data and weather forecast and observation data and effectively visualise the combined information into a simple-to-use situational picture. nauticAi efficiently leverages Copernicus Marine data in both its Snapshot-solution and the BOQA-platform. Snapshot offers real-time ship tracking with built-in IoT capabilities and live video streaming, while BOQA (Bridge Operations Quality Assurance) is used for detecting Close encounters, Route deviations, heavy weather on route and much more. This service is now also available on the Inmarsat Fleet Data IoT platform. nauticAi utilises Copernicus Marine data, such as wind, wave and ice forecasts in all of their solutions. Ship operators need to have a safety-solution which can provide a 24/7 continuous monitoring of sensor data and alarms and raise alerts if defined operational limits were deviated from. The BOQA solution developed by nauticAi answers this specific need: it is essentially an automated event tracker, which uses various rules and artificial intelligence techniques to detect anomalies and deviations in operational behaviour. Some of the key event types include route plan deviations, heavy weather, heavy motions, sudden stops at sea, under keel clearance, excessive rudder movement, black-outs and crash stops.

NAVIGATION AND SCIENTIFIC PLANNING ONBOARD RV POLARSTERN CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

RV Polarstern is a German research icebreaker of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven. RV Polarstern is used to conduct research in polar waters as well as for the logistical support of the Antarctic Research Station Neumayer. To aid navigation and scientific planning in sea ice covered areas, a new charting system was developed. The system visualizes satellite and model data provided from various sources in near real-time. The charting system is used for strategic planning of the ship route, tactical planning: Finding the optimal way through sea ice, monitoring sea ice during ice stations, identify suitable floes for experiments and recovery of sensor deployments. Data from various sources are made available in the charting system, among which the 10-days sea ice motion, concentration and thickness forecast from the CMEMS Arctic ocean model. Postprocessing and delivery on board is done by the company DriftNoise.com. Forecast data is for example used to assess the accessibility of certain areas or the development of the ice edge within the next couple of days.

The Research Vessel Polarstern is the most important resource for German polar research and the flagship of the Alfred Wegener Institute. Commissioned on 9 December 1982, the Polarstern has since logged more than 1.5 million nautical miles, or roughly 2.7 million kilometres (as of 2014). The Polarstern operates an average of 310 days a year, typically cruising in the Antarctic from November to March and pursuing research in the Arctic during the summer months. In the process, she covers ca. 50,000 nautical miles every year, the equivalent of two trips around the Equator.

The research icebreaker can even operate in the pack ice zone and can even overwinter in the ice of the polar seas.

D-ICE activities on ship routing covers 3 services. *First, statistical routing studies enabling its customers to validate a project (business model, extreme weather conditions, ship performance...) with a large amount of calculations. *Then, D-ICE operational team provides metocean and routing support for shipping companies during navigations. *Finally, OCEANiCS (OCEAN Intelligent Control System) is an embedded system enabling both ship control and weather routing.

Main objective are environmental impact reduction and improvement of navigation safety. Our multi-objective algorithms optimize ship route and ship velocity along the transit, considering wind, waves and current. Application covers also sailing teams, which are interested in advanced routing as their ships are becoming more and more extreme. Copernicus Marine Service data from global to regional modelling are crucial for D-ICE customers. Todays used datasets are waves, wind and ocean currents, but further developments will take benefits from satellites images, ice forecasts or nebulosity.

Hull performance refers to the impact of hull and propeller on the fuel efficiency of a ship. Deterioration in hull and propeller performance between dry-dockings currently accounts for around 10% of world fleet fuel cost and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions. Most vessels leave dry dock with hull and propeller in a good condition. However, on account of a combination of biofouling and mechanical damage, hull and propeller performance begin to deteriorate. Vessel operators can reduce their fuel costs and emission significantly if proven quality coatings and a standardized approach along with data driven solutions are used and implemented.

SAILGRIB SHIP-ROUTING APPLICATION

SAILGRIB, a French startup, has developed a sailing navigation app available from the Google Play Store that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. As of Jan 2017, the application was being used by more than 10,000 racers and leisure sailors every week. The app success is steadily increasing as the number of downloads is doubling every year. Most users (70%) are European.

SailGrib algorithms are based on the isochrones method tweaked for running on Android phones or tablets. Henri Laurent from SailGrib says that in order to get reliable routing, accurate inputs such as polar plots showing boat speed, weather and ocean current forecasts are needed. The latter are provided by the Copernicus Marine Service high quality analysis and forecast products for the Global Ocean, the Iberia-Biscay-Irish Seas, the European North West Shelves, the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas.

SAFE TRANSPORT OF GAS IN THE NORTH SEA

The PIPEX project focuses on modelling the transport of natural gas through subsea pipelines taking into account oceanic conditions. The natural gas produced by Norway is transported to Europe in large diameter subsea pipelines, and the state of the entire pipeline system is modelled in real time. The accuracy of the capacity estimations is important for optimisation of existing infrastructure and for design of new pipelines. Sea bottom temperature is a particularly important parameter when calculating the transport capacity in a subsea gas pipeline as the volume of the gas is nearly directly proportional to the temperature. Modelled sea bottom temperature data from the Copernicus Marine Service North West Shelf Forecasting model are used as input to the computer models at GASSCO, because observed sea bottom temperatures are not available. Recent analyses of the deviation between the modelled and measured gas temperature in the pipelines show a maximum temperature difference of up to 2 °C. Reducing this deviation by improving the estimation of the sea bottom temperature will have a key economic incentive for the project.

AHPA, Asset Health and Probabilistic Analyses, focuses on probability analyses of fractures and strains on offshore structures.

AHPA gives answers to the questions: How can we be sure that offshore structures are sufficiently safe? How can we ensure that no accidents occur? Experience data of where, when and why fatigue cracks occur have been systematically collected for Jacket structures and for Semi-submersibles. Such fatigue cracks are linked to the strains that offshore structures are exposed to due to harsh weather conditions in the North Sea. Of particular interest is the accumulated impact of wave forces, but also the importance of forecasting wave e.g. wave swell in periods of important marine procedures where the swell frequency is close to the resonance frequency of a structure. This wave information can be derived from Copernicus Marine Service. For example, the ship heave motion is of serious concern during marine operations. Combined wind sea and swell system from different directions may result in rapid changes in the heave amplitude. CMEMS wave height combined with period is used to predict the 3-dimensional motion of floating bodies.

A harsh ocean environment with strong winds and waves over decades of use causes significant wear and tear on offshore structures. The angle from which waves hit a platform, and the wave height are important factors, but in addition the wave frequency is an important factor due to the resonance frequency of the structure itself. If a wave system with high energy at a certain frequency hits a structure such as a platform or a ship, it can be extremely dangerous to perform operations.

SHIP ROUTING A CRUISE FERRY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

The Italian Ship company " Grandi Navi Veloci" has entrusted La Superba's safe routing to the Operational Oceanography Group of the Institute for the Marine and Coastal Environment (IAMC/CNR) in Oristano. The M/V La Superba is a cruise ferry, one of the world largest and fastest luxury cruise ferries which can house close to 3000 passengers. La Superba connects Genoa to Palermo every day, crossing 800 km in the eastern Ligurian Sea, the Corsica Channel and the entire Tyrrhenian Sea. IAMC Researchers of the Operational Oceanography Group run numerical models to simulate the behaviour of various environmental parameters, providing to the Captain of La Superba daily forecasts for ocean characteristics and circulation, as well as waves along the transect.

Downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from the lower resolution Copernicus Marine Service model as forcing conditions. IAMC uses CMEMS products as boundary and initial conditions to force two sub-regional 3D hydrodynamic models for the Western (seas around Sardinia) and Central Mediterranean Sea (Sicily Channel), and Sardinian Seas.

SHOM is the French Defence hydrographic and oceanographic office. It is a public administration under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence. Its mission is the description and the prediction of the maritime and coastal environment supporting defence and national navigation, and maritime policies. SHIP ROUTING IN ICE COVERED AREAS: THE NAVTOR AS SERVICES

The shipping service company NAVTOR AS develops software solutions for various planning and e-navigation services. NAVTOR AS serves around 3000 vessels world-wide, and these include the passenger vessel M/S FRAM cruise ship operated by Hurtigruten and the M/S POLARSYSSEL operated by the governor of Svalbard, which are faring near the ice edge, but need to avoid the ice. The NAVTOR AS NavStation allows to draw possible waypoints and consider the sea ice forecasts on top of the existing winds, waves and currents conditions. NAVTOR AS includes the sea ice forecasting from the Arctic Copernicus Marine Service model into its display. The novelty resides in the ability to animate the charts and get an impression of the possible changes of the conditions during the voyage due to ice motions and freezing or melting of the ice. Bjørn Åge Hjøllo from NAVTOR AS says that "e-Navigation is crucially dependent on detailed validation information for the forecasts. The private company LINKS MT s.p.a and the CMCC foundation (Fondazione CMCC- Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici) have combined their respective skills to develop sea situational awareness services for users in various sectors. "VISIR: Discovering Safe and Efficient Routes" (http://www.visir-nav.com/en/home) is one of the web tools developed, which proposes a web interface for ship routing in the Mediterranean. The optimization regards total navigation time, taking into account safety of navigation. Both motorboats and sailboats are considered. The VISIR service is available in both a FREE and a PREMIUM version. The operator enters the ship departure and arrival locations (from point A to point B) and the web tool then computes several possible oceanic routes (optimal versus geodetic routes) and displays them on a map together with the respective journey time (in hours) and distance (in nautical miles). The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea models provide accurate ocean wave forecasts in the Mediterranean Sea that enable the VISIR tool to provide useful ship-routing advice to anyone sailing in the Mediterranean.

CMA CGM is a leading worldwide container shipping group and the leader in France. With a presence on every continent through its network of more than 600 offices in more than 160 countries, CMA-CGM serves over 420 ports in the world with around 450 vessels assigned to 200 shipping lines. CMA CGM has developed the Fleet Navigation & Support Centre, which provides navigation support and routing and guidance services. Working 24/7, the Fleet Navigation & Support Centre is manned by experienced CMA CGM seafarers and acts as a valuable interface between vessels and office departments by monitoring, warning, and guiding the fleet. ACTIMAR (SUEZ group) has been contracted

by CMA CGM to compare several ocean current products including the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents from the IBI, MED and GLOBAL hydrodynamic models and the satellite and in-situ-based Global Observed Ocean current product. According to Stephane Raynaud from Actimar, In addition to the constant improvement on the reliability of ocean forecasts provided by CMEMS, the knowledge of the forecast uncertainty will represent a major step forward.

Maritime transport accounts for more than 80% of international freight transport. Ship weather routing is widely used. But routing by the current remains recent and innovative. The emergence of new operational ocean forecasts makes it possible to better understand the mesoscale dynamics of the upper ocean and to provide optimized and qualified forecasts when combined with innovative data processing methods. Using surface current for ship routing in areas where the weather conditions do not prevail may allow to save about 1% of the fuel consumption.

SHIP ROUTING WITH THE SCANNAV NAVIGATION SOFTWARE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

ScanNav provides all necessary tools and support for ship navigation and ship routing (e.g. raster and vector charts from National Hydrographical Offices), GPS and other instruments plug-ins for real-time navigation and/or post-analysis, maps to create routes overlaid with e.g. tide information, water levels or weather and ocean forecasts. ScanNav utilises surface current data from Copernicus Marine Service models in the European North West Shelf areas, the Iberia Biscay Ireland and Mediterranean Sea converted into Grib format. Surface current products are used for ship routing purposes through application of the ScanNav routing module. Other uses include fishing or diving activities and usage were visualization of currents is important. The User defines an area on the chart, send a request to the ScanNav server which returns the results directly via a website, or as an email reply. The service includes converting NCEP data to Grib data on user-selected areas. ScanNav customers are mostly focused on the leisure market. ScanNav also serves professional market customers especially with regard to distribution of Official ENC (Electronic Navigational Charts).

Wind, waves and currents and sea ice cover are crucial factors in choosing a route at sea. Advanced routing systems are being introduced in sailing and shipping, one result being that the skipper on board makes the crucial decisions about the route.

Avoiding rough weather and having the best possible advance route planning can minimise boat damage and mean more precise arrival times. Choosing the optimum route also lays the foundation for reducing fuel consumption.

SMARTPHONE APPLICATION FOR SAILORS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

KAPTAN is a smartphone application for mariners developed by the Physical Oceanography Research Group, Dept. of Geosciences, University of Malta, as part of the CALYPSO FO project. It uses HF radar operational data, satellite data and numerical models to provide information on the present and predicted sea conditions in the Malta-Sicily Channel. KAPTAN has a user-friendly interface that provides users with marine weather maps and point data at the tip of their fingers. It centralises data from many sources (modelling, in-situ, satellite), including satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service. KAPTAN maps those data using Google Earth mapping tools and redistributes them as ASCII files. It also provides a Google Maps application programming interface (API) for users who are also developers. It is one of the most frequently downloaded weather apps in Malta on the Apple App Store and has received 5-star reviews on Google Play.

Up until recently, sailors were planning their crossing using manual methods and books like pilot charts. New weather routing tools have now appeared on the market thanks to the mobile revolution.

Sailers can improve their security onboard thanks to a better knowledge of the meteo and oceanic conditions. Crossings are safer for human beings and equipment on board.

CMEMS Satellite Sea Surface Temperature products used in this application merge data from several satellites. The CMEMS products used provide with blended (L4 processing level) gridded estimation of the ocean temperature at 10 meter depth, merging the strengths of Microwave (i.e. temporal and spatial coverage) and Thermal Infrared (i.e. high accuracy and resolution) satellite radiometers measurements.

SUPPORTING SHIP ROUTING IN THE BLACK SEA

Members of the academic staff and students from "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati (UDJG), Romania, are involved in research activities related with the Black Sea marine environment and maritime transportation. The Danube River and its connection with the Black Sea is the subject of one of the main research topics which focus on the sea state conditions at the mouths of the river and in the Black Sea basin. A 15-year high resolution data base of the sea state conditions in the Black Sea was developed in the framework of DAMWAVE project (http://www.im.ugal.ro/DAMWAVE/index_engleza.htm).

Copernicus Marine Service altimeter measurements of the significant wave height were used to improve the predictions of a wave modelling system implemented in the Black Sea by means of the data assimilation methods. Based on the wave model results, various studies regarding the assessment of the wave climate in the Black Sea were performed with the objective to help the maritime navigation, offshore activities, etc. The Copernicus Marine Service significant wave height satellite data are assimilated into the DAMWAVE Black Sea wave model to improve wave prediction.

One of the key factors in the maritime navigation is the knowledge of the areas that are the most affected by extreme events. Based on the information available from the DAMWAVE project, several studies were further performed to identify the areas where storms are the most frequently encountered in order to better choose maritime routes.

SUPPORT TO MARINE SEISMIC SHIP OPERATIONS

CGG collects seismic data to image the subsurface of the Earth. At sea, this data is acquired by deploying large spreads of sensors: up to 14 cables separated by 100m each and up to 10km in length are towed between 7m and 50m below the sea surface. These operations can be affected by environmental conditions (sea current, swell, wind). Access to relevant marine information, through services like CMEMS, is essential to operation performance and safety. The oceanographic information is used at different stages of an acquisition. During preparation, past statistical data is processed to assess ocean conditions, identify risks and anticipate possible performance issues. During surveys, the global understanding of the ocean dynamics is needed to set correct equipment and sensors parameters, make real time decisions for managing the environmental risks, and ideally for optimizing acquisition strategy. Specifically, acoustic propagation parameters are based on water column information, the steering of the acquisition spread requires a good multilayer current anticipation, and accurate weather forecast ensures safe management and protection of the equipment.

Seismic operations at sea are significantly affected by environmental factors including weather and ocean conditions.

Accessing relevant marine information on the area of interest, through operational oceanography services and products, is essential to operation performance and safety. In some areas, the standby time due to weather can be up to 30 %, the time loss due to current and loss of coverage can amount 15 % of production time.

TIMEZERO is a full marine navigation software solution for recreational sailing and motor boat users or for professional navigation, sold in more than 25 countries. It provides a route that will optimize the time taken to travel on a sailboat using the weather forecast information and your boat's polars.
