BLUERISE: OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY RESOURCE ANALYSIS

Covering seventy percent of our globe, the oceans are the world largest solar collectors. This solar energy is captured as heat in the upper layers of the oceans.

From the natural temperature difference that exists between the upper and deep layers of the ocean, energy can be extracted. This is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and is in particular of interest in the tropics where it can be instrumental in helping islands and coastal regions in achieving a sustainable future. It is considered among the biggest renewable energy sources.

Using the ocean database of Copernicus Marine Service, Bluerise in collaboration with TU Delft, has evaluated the year round and ten year average ocean characteristics in the Caribbean analyzing the ocean currents, density and temperature profiles over depth. Particular attention was spent on ocean upwelling and seasonal fluctuations.

Bluerise has developed a model, using the data from the Copernicus Marine Service, to analyze oceanographic features such as natural ocean current patterns and their variability relevant for OTEC. This enables a quick assessment of the feasibility of OTEC locations.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a renewable electricity source that uses the natural temperature difference in tropical oceans between the surface water and deep water.

The technology can transform a temperature difference of 20 °C or more into clean, reliable, and predictable base load electricity.

Tropical regions, with population centers near the coast, have ideal conditions to deploy OTEC technology to fully meet their rapidly growing energy needs. Although tropical regions currently account for less than 30% of the current global energy demand, the tropics will become the most significant energy market within the next 20 years.

Ten years of data from the Global Ocean Model with a spatial resolution of 1/12 degree and temporal resolution of one day is applied. This enables a quick assessment of the feasibility of OTEC locations.

LISTENING TO THE OCEAN'S NOISE

The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) is participating in the International Quiet Ocean Experiment, which objective is to understand the impact of underwater anthropogenic noise on aquatic life, develop solutions for ocean noise monitoring and reduce the impact of anthropogenic noise through regulation.

TNO has developed an underwater sound modelling system that performs mathematical calculations of underwater sound pressure as a function of time, space and the frequency of sound sources.

The speed of sound in seawater is dependent on water density (i.e. temperature and salinity) and wave height will have an influence on local noise and long range propagation.

TNO uses the Copernicus Marine Service Global model as an input source for ocean density.

Mark Prior from TNO says that "the Copernicus Marine Service

global model is an accurate tool for providing seawater density, which affects our underwater sound propagation model ".

Developing human activity at sea opens up new possibilities for the global economy, but increases environmental pressures.

Correlation between sonar exercises and numerous whale beachings has been proved in the 80s and triggered awareness among the scientific and stakeholders community.

Prejudicial effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life is now better regulated: In Europe, regulation is currently governed by two European Directives, the Water Framework Directive (2000) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2010).

SUPPORTING THE NETHERLANDS WITH THE EUROPEAN MARINE STRATEGY FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE

DELTARES is an independent, not-for-profit, applied research institute.

The European Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directive requires EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020.

In the Netherlands, DELTARES is one of the national institutes in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor number 5 dealing with eutrophication.

Meinte Blaas from DELTARES has stated that "Copernicus Marine

Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as this allows us to improve consistency in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

The aim of the European Union's ambitious Marine Strategy Framework Directive is to protect more effectively the marine environment across Europe.

It came into force on June 2008 and was transposed into each member's state national legislation by mid 2010.

It is the first EU legislative instrument related to the protection of marine biodiversity and aims to protect the resource base upon which marine-related economic and social activities depend.

IMPROVING SONAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENCE VESSELS

The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) under the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) are collaborating in order to improve underwater sonar communications between the Dutch Ministry of Defence?s sea-going vessels.

The performance of a given sonar is critical for self protection.

DMO and TNO have developed a sonar performance model, the most complex aspect of which by far is the propagation of sound in the ocean. Such models need to take into account the refraction of sound due to oceanic temperature and salinity variation in the water column, the reflection of sound at the surface, the influence of roughness (wave spectrum, wind speed, sea surface temperature) and bubble content at the surface, as well as the reflection of sound at the seabed.

The DMO and TNO use the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Global models as an input source for ocean density (temperature and salinity) in their sonar performance model.

Gert Vlaming from DMO says that "we also soon expect to use the

wave products from the Copernicus Marine Service".

MONITORING OIL SPILLS IN THE NORTH SEA

IMARES is involved in a European (DG MARE) funded project for assessing the cost-effectiveness and reliability of the existing oceanic monitoring infrastructure in the North Sea, and identifying any gaps.

The objective is to test the available oceanic information (from Marine Copernicus Service and other sources) and to evaluate it in the framework of real case exercises (e.g. fake oil spill accident exercise).

IMARES has for example built an oil spill monitoring system based on the GNOME (NOAA) oil spill trajectory model fed by the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents and satellite winds model.

Jan Tjalling van der Wal from IMARES says that "the Copernicus

Marine Service ocean currents and satellite wind data are key inputs for our North Sea Checkpoint oil spill exercises. This saved us time and also the investment of time and expertise that would have been necessary to develop a hydrographical circulation model to get the currents right ".

The purpose of the North Sea checkpoint is to audit the value of marine data services to solve particular commercial and policy challenges with the development of the Blue Economy.

IMARES has successfully audited the value of the Copernicus Marine Service data in the case of an oil spill accident in the North Sea.

Physics Models over the European North West Shelves is used in this application. It provides hydrodynamic forecast including high frequency processes of paramount importance to characterize regional scale marine processes. Wind satellite products are also used.

SUPPORTING THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY IN EUROPE

Deltares, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Water Insight and DHI have collaborated in the EU-funded project AQUA-USERS, which provides the aquaculture industry with user-relevant and timely information based on the most up-to-date satellite data and innovative optical in-situ measurements.

The key purpose is to develop an application that brings together satellite information on water quality and temperature with insitu observations, as well as relevant weather prediction and met-ocean data.

The application and underlying database is linked to a decision support system that includes a set of (user-determined) management options. Specific focus is put on the development of indicators based on Earth observation data for aquaculture management, including indicators for harmful algae bloom events.

The methods and services developed within AQUA-USERS are tested by the members of the user board, aquaculture companies and organisations representing different geographic areas and aquacultural production systems.

Water quality is a critical factor when culturing any aquatic organism.

Optimal water quality varies by species and must be monitored to ensure growth and survival. The quality of the water in the production systems can significantly affect the organism's health and the costs associated with getting a product to the market.

Water quality parameters that are commonly monitored in the aquaculture industry include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, hardness, ammonia, and nitrites.
