Poppies bloom for Cooroy’s Remembrance Day BY ALEX PURCELL MORE than 1,200 handcrafted poppies were installed at Noosa District State High School’s (NDSHS) Cooroy campus for Remembrance Day. NDSHS senior teacher Cathy Eden said the Poppy Project, initiated in 2022, aims to create a visual display within the school

for the national memorial. “Last year we created a temporary ‘poppy field’ by installing 317 handcrafted poppies created by students, teachers and very willing community members, including the Eumundi branch of the QCWA. “After this successful event, we agreed to grow the project in 2023 and aimed to at least

double our poppy numbers. “But we quadrupled our 2022 installation, which goes far beyond the goal of doubling the numbers.” Ms Eden said running a crochet club throughout the year and seeking hidden talents among students, staff and the school community, they were astounded by the number of eager volun-

“Most impressive was a parent who reconnected with her childhood crochet skills and individually crafted 447 poppies. “As such, we ‘planted’ over 1,200 poppies on Friday 10 November for our 2023 field of poppies display. “It was nothing short of magnificent. Continued on page 3

Published in the Cooroy Rag on 26 October 1983, the caption reads: “It is thought that the gentleman standing on the rostrum in the centre of the photograph is Andrew Fisher.”

Another local school to create a stunning visual display for Remembrance Day was Noosa Christian College (NCC). NCC teacher aide and president of the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch Trish Geelan said every year, RSL Queensland initiates an activity around Remembrance Day and this year, NCC participated in ‘Draw to Remember’. “Draw to Remember is where RSL Queensland sends boxes of chalk and activity booklets to primary schools around Queensland. “NCC participated with drawing in booklets and on the concrete to show how we remember.” Mrs Geelan said veterans from the Cooroy-Pomona Sub Branch came to the school to meet and greet students and see their work. “During this time, RSL Queensland also came with a film crew to shoot what will be the 2024 promo video around Queensland in the lead-up to Remembrance

Day. “The students involved did an amazing job and it is a wonderful community involvement for our school,” Mrs Geelan said. On Remembrance Day, Saturday 11 November, more than 100 people attended the annual service at Cooroy Memorial Park. Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch vice president Peter Watts said it was pleasing

to see both young and old attend. “A special mention must be made of Else Dalzell, our 102-year-old veteran, who was there.” This year’s service was a special one, with the unveiling of the newly restored Cooroy Cenotaph. “Many positive comments were received on how wonderful our cenotaph looked after its restoration that took

place during the year. “The Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch received grant funding from the Queensland Government, under the Queensland Remembers Community Grants Program, which allowed for the restoration to occur. “Member for Nicklin Robert Skelton MP was our guest speaker for the service. He was also representing the Premier of Queensland and

the State Parliament for the unveiling of the Cooroy memorial restoration plaque,” Mr Watts said. Robert Skelton MP said it was an honour to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony in Cooroy to officially unveil the newly restored cenotaph on behalf of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP. “The restoration was funded by a $40,000 grant from

the Queensland Remembers program,” Mr Skelton said. Mr Skelton laid a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of the Queensland Government, along with deputy mayor Frank Wilkie and councillor Karen Finzel for Noosa Council, Melissa Roberts for the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch, and Robin Taylor for the Cooroy RSL Club.

A peaceful protest was held outside the Tewantin Noosa RSL Club.

MEMBERS and “stooddown members” of the Tewantin Noosa RSL Club have held a peaceful protest outside the Memorial Avenue premises. Organiser and spokesperson Kevin Graham said 40 to 50 people attended the protest against the chairman of the memorial club. “In the past year, nine board members have been sacked or resigned including myself, around 70 sub branch members were terminated, and everyone who went to the AGM and signed the petition of no confidence in the chairman was banned from the club. “Overall, a total of 150 memberships have been suspended pending an investigation and show cause notice. “We hoped the outcome of the protest would be that the chairman reinstates everyone’s membership, drops all charges, and a special general meeting is called for

a vote of no confidence and he resigns.” Mr Graham said while this hasn’t happened, they received 30 to 40 signatures of people at the protest and a special general meeting will now be held on 8 December at the Masonic Centre in Moorindal Street. “At this general meeting, we will vote on two allegations: one, ineffective relations and communications by the board of members and the sub branch; and two, lack of support and confidence in the chairman of the Tewantin Noosa RSL & Citizens Memorial Club. “The chairman will be invited to be there but it will be majority rules. “Because the special general meeting will be to deal with these two items, this is all we can do. We will then open another meeting to accept the minutes of the previous meeting and we will call for nominations for members of the board from

the floor. “If that goes to plan then we have a board and we can close that meeting to open another meeting to ratify the last meeting. “Then we will have a legal board and we can proceed to the club, hand the duty manager the paperwork and if the chairman is there, he has to be removed from the building and he has 14 days to appeal.” Tewantin Noosa RSL Club general manager Micheal Sue See said on behalf of the club, he and the board are continuing to liaise directly and personally with members should they have concerns, noting there are a range of reasons including confidentiality and privacy. “The board is committed to resolving any concerns to ensure members enjoy their visit to the club and we look forward to fostering a positive working relationship with the RSL Sub Branch.”

Black Mountain residents listen to the message that may save their property or their lives.

A FIRE safety information session has been held for residents of the Black Mountain community affected by the road closure due to the landslip. Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) rural fire service educator Jackie Kirk, assisted by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) area officer Neil Davis, conducted an open-air information session at Black Mountain on Sunday 29 October. Rotary Club of Cooroy president Chris Durie said the event was an unqualified success, with over 50 local people attending. “It helped to get the local community together, get to know each other and cooperate as a community to prevent loss of life and property damage due to fire.

“I think we may have tapped into a real need in all our rural communities. Helping the Rural Fire Service to get the message across to a small local gathering where questions unique to their area can be asked, is a valuable public service that Rotary is happy to assist with.” Black Mountain resident Alex McConnell said the support from Rotary for their small community has been incredible. “With amazing empathy, they have been able to recognise and support community members who currently feel very vulnerable.” An automated external defibrillator (AED) deployed by the Rotary Club of Cooroy, was installed in Black Mountain for the community earlier this year. “With the fire season upon

us and with several fire calls already to Black Mountain, the morning put on by Black Mountain RFB and the Rotary Club of Cooroy has provided an opportunity to connect with residents over bushfire concerns,” Mr McConnell said. Following the success of the fire preparedness session, Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade’s Harry and Jackie Kirk will run a similar event for the Black Mountain Cudgerie Estate and Tallowwood Drive local areas on 10 December at 9 am at Cudgerie Common in Blueberry Drive opposite Blackbean Court, Cudgerie Estate. “All are invited and once again Cooroy Rotary will be there to provide a sausage sizzle, cool drinks tea and coffee for a gold coin donation,” Mr Durie said.

A COOROY couple has tied the knot – 17 years, two children, and a successful business later. Guy Skinner and Eva Paterson, who own Fika Cafe in Cooroy, were married on Saturday 4 November in front of 140 guests. Eva said it was a very exciting and joyful day. “We have been together for 17 years, so for us to celebrate our journey of love, kids, family and friends was a very exciting and joyful day.” The ceremony and reception were held on a private property in Lake Macdonald. “We hired teepees for the reception from Tipi Luxe and

Noosa Council 2024 candidate Alecia Staines.

A LOCAL mum of six has put her hand up as a candidate for the Noosa Council 2024 elections. Alecia Staines, a primary school teacher and founder of the Maternity Consumer Network, said this is her first time running for local council. “When you come from a background in teaching, you don't expect to put your hand up for local government but I have spent a lot of time in not-for-profits and when you're at that level, in consultation with the community, it becomes clear on what the community needs, to make effective representation for that and advocate for what they want and bring about change.” Ms Staines said her vision for the Noosa Shire is a community where residents, families and businesses can live and work together. “We need to ensure we maintain our pristine environment and make sure we get our fair share of state and federal grants, and I know how. “We need to have responsible council spending and redirect council focus back to the core service deliv-

ery, which makes Noosa special. “We need to fight to keep rate rises to a minimum, keep bureaucratic growth under control and conduct proper community consultation fairly with no hidden agendas, and ensure surrounding communities are not forgotten.” Ms Staines said community representation is important to her, and hearing people’s stories. “Getting out in the community allows you to see what people want at a grassroots level. They want council to be accessible, they want leadership and visibility. “Hearing stories is one of the most rewarding parts of local government. I am looking forward to continuing to hear from the local community, organisations and businesses even when I'm having a coffee. These are the most important conversations.” Ms Staines was at the November Sconetime to chat with locals, with her 15-week-old daughter. “I started campaigning while I was pregnant. Ten days after I had her, I was back on the campaign trail.”

After having her first three children, in 2015, Ms Staines had a vision to improve maternity care. “I founded Maternity Consumer Network which now has 1,200 members. This year as a result of our campaigning, the Queensland Government directed $42 million into rural maternity services.” Ms Staines is also a member of Medicare for Midwives, National Maternity Data Development Project, and Guidelines for Pregnancy and Postnatal Care. Raised on a farm on the Darling Downs, Alecia also started the first Agribusiness Gateway to Industry Schools Project in Goondiwindi. “Now there are 75 participating schools in Queensland involved in shaping the future of our youth. “I believe this success was achieved because I’ve got a good work ethic, common sense and a can-do attitude.” The Queensland local government election will be held on Saturday 16 March 2024.

Ron’s retirement strikes a chord

AFTER 48 years and 4,129 times playing the organ for The Son of the Sheik at the Majestic Theatre, legend Ron West has retired. Ron said retirement was something he had been thinking about, when a bout of illness decided for him. “I got an infection that came on suddenly and laid me out at the start of a full week of shows. “Pianist Chris Rose, who had been lurking in the wings, was flung into the deep end. He had to do the whole lot and will be doing the rest of the shows for the rest of this year and will take over full-time next year.” Ron purchased the Majestic Theatre from Harold Bazzo in the early 1970s and sold it to the community, including all the chattels, with an interest-free loan in 2006. Alison Hatfield said Ron was instrumental in bringing silent films to the theatre in the early 1980s, and they are now the core business of the Majestic. “By doing this he has kept the interest of silent films alive for not just our local community but for all who visit the theatre from all over the country and the world. “It is currently the only theatre in the world that continuously screens silent films, thanks to Ron.” Ron celebrated his 90th birthday at the Majestic with family and friends earlier this year and was recently nominated for the 2024 Senior Australian of the Year Award for Queensland. “I was one of the four that were left standing at the end. I appreciate the recognition.” Ron said he thought retiring might be difficult but the

way it has worked out, he has the best of both worlds. “The theatre can’t do enough. Alison is unbelievable – next year is booked out already with live shows. “I’ve also got a key to the place and the organ so if I want to go in and play and amuse myself, I can do; and if there is a film I want to play, I can come in and play it; or if there is a group or birthday party and they want me to play, I will go in and play. “It’s the best of both worlds.” Ron officially stepped down at the Majestic Theatre AGM on 18 November. “I got a beautiful bottle of Veuve Clicquot and a very nice recognition.” The Majestic Theatre shows a silent film for the public every Saturday, and during the week for group bookings.

THE tradition of wearing a remembrance poppy is observed across the Commonwealth, as well as in France, Belgium and Poland, to mark the moment that the Armistice came into force after the bloodshed of WWI. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month unites former allies across the globe in a moment of silent reflection. After WW11, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who died in both world wars. Today the loss of lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day. November 11 is the day we Australians remember the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our great country during times of war, conflict and peacekeeping operations.

The freedom we share today was given to us by those who came before us and who sacrificed so much. So now it is our responsibility to never forget their service. They died so we could have the freedom to gather here to remember them. On this day, as we should every day, we remember those who served, fought, and died for our freedom. We thank them and salute those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our thoughts are also with the men and women of the Australian Defence Force that continue to serve for our country. We should remember the doctors and nurses who tended to the wounded; the parents who watched their children fight things that they couldn’t protect them from; the children who were too young to understand why their mums and dads

wouldn’t be home for Christmas; or the children who had to grow up too soon so that they could take care of their families during the war. Because they lost so much, and because they gave everything. We thank them and will always remember their sacrifice Remembrance Day is also a day of thanks and quiet reflection on what a wonderful, lucky nation we live in. It is a time to reflect on Australia’s commitment to continue to contribute to peace in other parts of the world. As the ranks of our older veterans continue to diminish, let us be determined to maintain special days such as this to reflect on our freedom. Our thoughts are for those who continue to suffer through their physical or mental scars, including those next of kin whose grief and sense of loss can never be eased.

Household retrofit planning workshop OLDER Pomona residents interested in contributing to a study on household preparedness in the event of natural disasters are being invited to participate in a series of online workshops. Earlier this year, a group of researchers held a focus group with Pomona residents over age 55. The group discussed ideas for adapting existing housing retrofit toolkits to find practical means of ensuring preparedness in the event of climate-related natural disasters, in particular, bushfires. University of Canberra researcher Iina Lohi said attendees discussed their ideas for refining home retrofit options they can use to adapt to their circumstances. “The researchers, from several academic institutions including the University of Canberra, Western Sydney University and the University of Technology Sydney, have examined the feedback along with the various toolkits developed for households since the 2019–20 bushfire season, to assess their relevance and suitability today.

“As a result of this work, a further series of focus group workshops will be held online for those interested in contributing further to the study.” The workshops will be held on Monday 4 December, Friday 8 December, Monday 15 January 2024 and Friday 19 January 2024 from 10 am to 12 noon. Iina said the role is voluntary and participation will remain anonymous. “However your commitment will provide an important community basis for the development of a bushfire resilient home retrofit toolkit for older Australians.” The Australian Government is funding the initiative through the National Emergency Management Authority and it is hoped the research will be completed by the end of 2024. Anyone interested in partaking in a one- to two-hour online workshop to review the framework for the bushfire resilient home retrofit toolkit so far, or just want further information, can email rsvp@climateretrofit. com.au or send a message via the contact form at climateretrofit.com.au.

New dental clinic filling needs

A NEW dental clinic has filled a hole in Pomona’s main street. Noosa Hinterland Dental Pomona has opened in the old Sunshine Cafe shop front on Memorial Avenue. Principal dentist Dr Luke Willis and his wife Gina, practice manager, opened the doors of the new clinic last week. Luke said they chose Pomona for their dental clinic because they were captivated by the sense of community and the serene beauty of the Noosa hinterland. “Pomona embodies a spirit of warmth and togetherness that resonates with our approach to dental care. We want to be more than just a dental practice; our goal is to become an integral part of the community, providing a service that extends

beyond oral health to overall lifestyle and wellbeing. “In Pomona, we have found the perfect blend of community spirit and a need for high-quality, patient-centred dental services.” Luke said Noosa Hinterland Dental Pomona offers a comprehensive range of dental services to meet the diverse needs of the community. “These services include general dentistry such as check-ups, cleanings and fillings, as well as more specialised treatments. We provide cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, restorative procedures like crowns and bridges, and periodontal care for gum health. For those seeking advanced treatments, we offer dental implants, full

mouth rehabilitation, and treatments for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.” Luke said while the clinic offers a broad range of dental services, they specialise in a few key areas. “I have extensive training and experience in dental implantology and full arch implant rehabilitation, making us a go-to clinic for those needing these advanced procedures. “We also have a strong focus on treating worn and collapsed dentitions, offering full mouth rehabilitation to restore both function and aesthetics. Additionally, our expertise in managing snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea with non-invasive treatments positions us uniquely in the dental field.” Luke said he and Gina met over 20 years ago when they were studying careers in health outside dentistry. “Gina was pursuing a career in medical nursing and I was pursuing a 10-year career as an advanced life support paramedic before transitioning to a careering dentistry. “We were married 15 years ago and have two wonderful sons, Cooper and Hugo. “Our wonderful nurse Ella grew up in Bli Bli and has extensive experience in the

dental field. She has just returned from an extended holiday overseas and is studying remedial massage.” Luke said they want the community of Pomona and the surrounding areas to know that Noosa Hinterland Dental Pomona is more than just a dental clinic. “We are a place where compassion meets excellence in dental care. Our practice is built on the philosophy that everyone deserves access to high-quality dental care in a comfortable and friendly environment. We believe in taking the time to understand each patient's individual needs and tailoring our treatments accordingly. “Our use of cutting-edge technology combined with our commitment to continuous learning, ensures we provide the best possible care. At Noosa Hinterland Dental Pomona, you're not just a patient, you're part of our community, and we're dedicated to helping you achieve not only a healthy smile but also improved overall well-being.” To book an appointment with Noosa Hinterland Dental Pomona visit noosahinterlanddental.com.au or call (07) 5485 5340.

New doctor loving life From wheelchair to in Eumundi wellness studio

Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi’s new doctor, Dr Gillian Cairney.

EUMUNDI’S new doctor has had a whirlwind couple of months. Dr Gillian Cairney sold her family home in Scotland to relocate to the Sunshine Coast with her young children and parents and join Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi. Dr Cairney said when she saw her children running along the beach, she knew she’d made the right decision. “It’s a different lifestyle here: up earlier, outdoors more and the kids don’t

watch nearly as much TV.” Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi’s newest doctor is no stranger to the area, after travelling to Australia with her best friend soon after qualifying and working for two years at Gympie Hospital. “We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into but we had a brilliant time. “It was the first time I’d worked in Accident and Emergency, plus it’s a rural hospital, so we managed things like fractures and

dislocations that would generally be referred to orthopaedics or other specialists in the UK. I was here during the floods, so patients had to be transferred by boat. One gentleman had been bitten by a snake while trying to clear his land and treating him was certainly a new experience for me.” Dr Cairney said even as a child, she wanted to be a doctor. “I’m not from a medical family; I’m one of the first to go to university, but patient care has always been fascinating to me, even if I was just watching it on TV.” Dr Cairney said it is lovely to be back on the Coast. “I had a day off recently so I dropped off the kids then sat on the beach and had coffee. It was so different from days off in Glasgow. “I'm loving life at the moment and greatly enjoying getting to know and care for the Eumundi community.” Dr Cairney is accepting new patients at Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi. Bookings can be made via ochrehealth.com.au or by calling the practice on 5442 8882.

AFTER suffering many health complications, one of which left her wheelchair-bound, Soul Wellness owner Elsie Campbell found herself in Pomona. “When I was 15 I suffered an injury that led me to being in hospital and then needing a spinal operation. Unfortunately, during this time I suffered many health complications and was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, only to then end up in a wheelchair. “Paralysed in my left leg and unsure if I would walk again, I needed full-time care so my mum quit her job to become my carer.” Elsie spent five years in and out of the wheelchair undergoing multiple spinal surgeries. “Unfortunately, due to the many health complications and being stuck in a medical system that failed me, I ended up with an addiction to prescribed drugs. This led me to Pomona.” The now 31-year-old said she started coming to Pomona to have treatments with a holistic healer. “When I was here in this part of the world I felt better,

as if the air I was breathing was healing me slowly every time I arrived. There was magic in this place. “So when I decided to move here, I knew what I was craving was a space to move with intention and a community of people to connect with. I felt that if I was craving a safe space to move and connect, others must be also.” Elsie opened Soul Wellness, now at Vibe Stores Pomona, a pilates studio that offers mat pilates, reformer pilates, high-intensity pilates, yin yoga, reiki energy healing and infrared sauna sessions. “At Soul Wellness we are an all-inclusive studio. We offer small group classes so that everyone who comes in can have a tailored experience. If someone is suffering from injury we can change exercises to suit them and work around any limitations that they may suffer. “Some of my clients joke that we are not a normal studio, we are a cool studio. What you see with us is what you get. We welcome anyone as they are.

Elsie and her dog Molly.

“I don't claim to be perfect and my beautiful clients have accepted me as I am, as I accept anyone who joins us, as they are. “It takes a team to heal yourself; I have learnt this first-hand. We are a community and a big family. We are happy to work closely with your other allied health professionals to ensure that we get you to where you need to be. “I want my experiences and life lessons to help others overcome the physical and emotional challenges we face.” Contact Elsie at Soul Wellness on 0402 225 664 or email soulpilatesaus@ outlook.com.

YOUR NOOSA FESTIVE FUNS BEGINS The hinterland is gearing up to welcome the Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy next week. The entourage of emergency services vehicles, Santa and Christmas giveaways will visit Cooran, Pomona, Kin Kin and Cooroy on Tuesday, December 5. Noosa Council’s Community Connections Manager, Alison Hamblin, said the hinterland route is one of the convoy’s highlights. “This is the fourth year and the joy it brings to the children is so uplifting,” Ms Hamblin said. The convoy starts at Kin Kin school at 3.15pm with scheduled stops at Chris Kenny Oval in Cooran, Stan Topper Park in Pomona and at the Cooroy Library. The route can be downloaded from the Council website – noosa.qld.gov.au. “At these stops, the youngsters get an opportunity to check out the emergency services vehicles and catch up with Santa,” she said. “We really encourage people to line the route and give us a wave to thank our emergency service personnel for their tireless dedication to our community,” Ms Hamblin said. “Everyone is back again this year, including the SES, QFES, Noosa Coastguard, local police and ambulance.” The convoy is supported by Hot91 and Madill Motor Group. Noosa Christmas Convoy makes it way through the hinterland.

COUNCIL INVESTS IN BETTER-CONNECTED SHIRE Missing links delivered with more than $1.68 million worth of footpath connections under construction as part of this year’s capital works program. Council has invested more than $1.68 million in new footpath connections, upgrades, and renewals for 2023/24. The focus is on delivering the missing links in the shire’s 200km-plus network of pathway and boardwalk assets – a key action of the Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy and Implementation Plan. Page

16- Cooroy Rag, 29 November 2023

Noosa Council will complete as many as 25 pathway projects by June. The hinterland will benefit from 694 metres of pathway improvements, 345 metres of which are new connections. Shaun Walsh, Council’s Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, said pathways at Maple Street and Tewantin

Road in Cooroy have already been completed, with pedestrians also enjoying the convenience of a new pathway link in Stan Topper Park, Pomona. “Residents and visitors to Boreen Point, Kin Kin and Cooran will also benefit from upcoming pathway improvements this financial year, with over $405,000

to be invested into these communities,” Mr Walsh said Council’s pathway program is a key initiative rolledout year-on-year as part of Council’s Capital Works budget, providing improved connectivity, safety and promoting a greener environment for the community.

CONSERVATION PROGRAMS’ POWERFUL IMPACT

Koala and joey enjoying VCA land. | Photo: Lisbet Dean

It’s been just three years since these trees were planted and they’re already providing habitat and a food source for Black Mountain’s koala population. This is the powerful impact property owners involved in Council’s Voluntary Conservation Agreement and Land for Wildlife programs are having on the local environment. Lisbet Dean and Peter Burke joined the Voluntary Conservation Agreement (VCA) program 11 years ago and since then Council has

funded the planting of more than 1000 koala food trees and other environmental restoration work on the couple’s property. Ms Dean and Mr Burke have also made their own contributions with additional plantings and regular weed control. “The fact the trees planted just three years ago are providing koalas with a food source already shows just how big a positive change to koala survival individual property owners can have in a very short period of time,” says Council’s

IN BRIEF Environmental Services Manager Ben Derrick. Through the VCA program Council supports private landowners who wish to protect environmentally significant bushland areas on their property in perpetuity in the form of a covenant. Ms Dean and Mr Burke both said the results of being a VCA property, so strongly supported by Noosa Council, bring them great joy and hope for the future. “The new plantings have brought a richness and diversity in wildlife sightings,” Ms Dean said. Land for Wildlife, meanwhile, is a voluntary program in which Council provides services to help landowners who wish to sustain and improve the ecological condition of their properties. In 20 years, the Land for Wildlife program has increased Noosa’s tree cover by 240Ha. Anyone interested in the Land for Wildlife and VCA programs can find out more by contacting Council via environment@noosa.qld.gov.au

THE MORE YOU RETURN THE MORE YOU EARN There’s now an easy way to earn extra cash for recycling, with Council’s new state-of-the-art reverse vending machine.

Lola and Fletcher earn some cash from recycling containers.

It’s as easy a child’s play, just ask Lola and Fletcher from Tewantin.

The two youngsters have become the latest change-makers by recycling eligible containers at Noosa’s new reverse vending machine, located the landfill site a 561 Eumundi-Noosa Road. Currently averaging about 3,400 items a week, the machine has capacity to triple its throughput. Waste Services manager Kyrone Dodd has challenged the community to embrace the containers for change initiative. “It’s easy, quick and such a fun way to earn a bit of extra cash,” he said. The machine, developed by Ecoboxtec, is the first-ofits-kind in that it sorts and

processes eligible containers using artificial Intelligence technology ready for recycling. Ecoboxtec Director Julien Craeye said the prototype machine aims to make it as convenient and easy for the public to use. “We also worked hard to reduce the workload for operators, and material handling,” he said. “Our aim was to make it easier for everyone to do their bit to keep the planet clean.” Under the initiative, wine and spirit bottles are now accepted, along with cans, glass and plastic bottles.

Strong response to Pomona Place Plan There has been a great response from the local Pomona community in the first round of community engagement to develop the Pomona Place Plan. “There were 250 responses to the survey and almost 300 people came to a pop-up event, joined a walk-shop, an urban sketching workshop or wrote a heartfelt love letter to Pomona,” Kim Rawlings, Council’s Strategy and Environment Director, said. The emerging feedback from the community talks about retaining the unique and special character of Pomona – including its heritage, environmental characteristics and sense of community. Keep an eye out for the summary of the engagement at yoursay.noosa@qld.gov.au.

Black Mountain reconstruction work underway The mammoth task of reconstructing the Sunshine Coast’s biggest landslide in 30 years kicked off in October following the complex task of designing a permanent repair solution. Shaun Walsh, Council’s Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, said early construction activities have included fencing off the site to all vehicles and pedestrians, vegetation clearing, and excavating and removing material. Piling to stabilise the area will start in early 2024. The detour via Andersons Road will remain in place during construction and Council will undertake regular maintenance,”Mr Walsh said. The flood recovery effort for Noosa Council is being delivered with assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. A GROUP of Cooroy ladies, sewing up a storm for charity, have received new sewing machines. Uniform 4 Kids (U4K) founder and board member Yvonne Pattinson said the Palm Lake Cooroy group are so happy with their new machines paid for by Bendigo Community Bank Cooroy via the Local Community Hero Awards. “Now we can all use the same machines instead of

the odd assortment we have been using.” U4K repurposes used uniforms to sew clothing for children in crisis centres, refugees, Indigenous communities and all children in need. “Between the three groups here in Cooroy, we have made almost 30,000 clothing items for children in need. These clothes have all been made using the old uniforms from police, border

force, Flying Doctors, firies, ambos, Australia Zoo and more.” Yvonne said the old uniforms would have gone to landfill. “Instead, our landfill was saved, children will be clothed and happier, and our ladies have made lasting friendships and have a new purpose in life – not to mention the enormous effect of bringing the police and communities closer together.” Yvonne said they have bags and boxes of clothing that they need to get to police stations in various towns for them to distribute as they see a need. “Couriers are expensive, so if anyone is travelling anywhere in Queensland before Christmas, maybe you could take a few bags with you?” If you can help, please contact Yvonne on 0413 133 791.

IN the spirit of community and Christmas, local students have donated items to support families in need during the festive season. Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) students

were invited to contribute non-perishable items for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, and Pastor Luke turned his office into a mini non-perishable grocery store. Christmas is a special

time for Noosa families, and a major part of the school’s pastoral care program is giving back to the community and allowing those less fortunate to enjoy some Christmas cheer. The appeal focuses on supporting these families, and students were also encouraged to give some pocket money to donate to what is a worthy cause. Matthew Gluyas from the Salvation Army was appreciative of the generous donations from GSLC students at the school’s final assembly. GSLC Junior Years presented the donations to the Salvation Army on 24 November.

Record amount Sub Branch appeals for support of donations Cooroy RSL community grant recipients.

COMMUNITY groups gathered at Cooroy RSL last month for a second round of grants under the club’s community giving program. Over 40 local organisations were supported by the Cooroy RSL’s community grants this year, with a record $100,000 in donations. The funding enabled local community organisations to deliver a wide range of services and activities to the community with the help of their dedicated volunteers. Youth sports was a popular category with support going to Cooroora Netball, Collins Dressage, Eumundi District Swim Club, Pomona AFL, Cooroora United Football, Cooroy & Pomona Pony Clubs, Noosa Christian College Basketball, National Barrel Horse Association, Noosa Pirates Junior Development Program, Cooroy Tennis Club and Pomona Cooran Cutters Rugby League. All received funding for various activities including equipment, uniforms, events and even registration discounts to make sport more affordable. Community and fundraising events like the Cooroy Ambulance Centenary event, Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival, Eumundi Christmas Extravaganza, Noosa Show, Pink Up Cooroy Breast Cancer Fundraiser, Australian Body Art Festival, Smart Pups Ladies Fundraiser, Cooroora Woodworkers Woodcraft Show, High Tea for the Hounds PTSD Dogs Fundraiser and Pomona in the Park, were all beneficiaries. THE Cooroy-Pomona Sub Branch is appealing to all current members of the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch and ex serving men and women of the Australian Defence Force. The RSL came into being in 1916 to help men and women returning from war. It continued from then through all the conflicts to this present day. The Cooroy RSL Sub Branch has operated in the Cooroy District for over 100 years. The RSL now has 12 local advocates on the Sunshine Coast to assist our ex-serving and serving men and women with their health and DVA injury claims. The RSL Club is a place for those of ex-service and those serving, to come and enjoy the camaraderie and company of fellow members. The Cooroy-Pomona Sub Branch has a proud history and is highly respected within the local community organisations. It has a small, dedicated team of volunteers who provide the following services: organise Anzac Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day; visit hospitals, nursing homes and the like; transport members to and from medical and other appointments; take members and their partners shopping; weekly phone calls to members or partners to check on their welfare; care for widows and arrange for their annual dinner and morning teas; organise the

annual sub branch dinner and end-of-year BBQ; commemorate the cenotaph park area; issue a quarterly newsletter; and maintain the Memorial Garden of Remembrance and Columbarium. These volunteer positions need to be filled to uphold our strong traditions. We are appealing to our current members and any future members to consider assisting in any way or being a contributor to provide the support needed. At the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the new year of 2024, all the following positions fall vacant: president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, membership officer, welfare officer, weapons collector licensee, Gardens of Remembrance officer, memorabilia officer, transport liaison officer, media officer, minute taker. If we do not fill these positions, several of the above functions may not proceed. The weekly sub branch activities at the RSL are: Wednesdays from 1 to 5 pm to meet the membership team and answer any general questions; Thursdays from 5 pm to meet the raffle team; and Fridays from 4 to 6 pm to ‘meet a member’ and have a yarn and drink with light refreshments. Should anyone wish further information, please call the Cooroy RSL Reception on 5447 6131 and a sub branch member will return your call.

Where: The Art Hub Cooroy, 3/2 Emerald Street, Cooroy THE Art Hub Cooroy is currently showcasing works of art for Kerry Keyte, Kent Smith, Irene Visser, and Cathie and Ron Twaddle. Working in mixed media gives Kerry Keyte the ability to adapt and change her artwork inspired by the light and ocean lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast. She describes her artwork as evolving using influences

of her travels and diving lifestyle. Kent Smith generally paints on large panels in acrylic and mixed media and has exhibited widely on the Sunshine Coast. In the USA, he worked as a landscape architect on major urban renewal and parks projects in Michigan. His current artwork is an offshoot of this background. Throughout a long career as a designer and academic of communication design, Irene Visser often found refuge in the practice of arts and crafts. The ocean and Queensland’s unique natural environment inspire and inform her work. Fascinated by detail, she strives to rec-

reate the wonder of small things in nature that are often overlooked. Irene’s work is a mixture of functional ware and whimsical sculpture forms. Cathie and Ron Twaddle are wicker workers and for 40 years have run their business in Brisbane, making and repairing classic cane furniture and traditional baskets, and running workshops. They retired and moved to Tanawha and soon Ron started to look at deadfall in the bush around his home. His artistic skills emerged and amazing wicker creations were created. Ron is an accomplished artist and his work is unique and an art piece.

IT’S no secret that Christmas time can be a tough time for people to stay on track with health and fitness goals. With extra food and drink, and holiday closure of gyms and sporting groups, it can be easy to slip backwards on the progress you have made through the year. At the same time, it’s important to spend time with family and enjoy a little indulgence. So how do we strike a good balance? The easiest way to keep on top of things is to keep perspective. After all, our bodies reflect what we choose to do between New Year and Christmas, not what we choose to do between Christmas and New Year! Keeping that in mind, here are my best tips to have fun and stay on track over the holidays: Keep your steps up: 6,000–10,000 steps a day is a good target for most people. Walking daily helps us maintain many health benefits including reducing stress and tension, improving cognition, immunity, memory and sleep, and also increasing energy levels. Keeping your steps up will provide a base level of activity to help you stay in good habits over the break without overexert-

Tips to have fun and stay healthy these holidays ing yourself. Be wise about what you put in your mouth: Eat a healthy vegetable-based meal before you head out to any function. Having a belly full of good, nutritious food will help you feel fuller when you get there, meaning you can enjoy the goodies on offer in moderation and guilt free. It will also make sure you stay in good habits for the days after the holidays. Keeping regular meal times of high-quality nutritious food will nourish you so you don’t end up with that overfull/undernourished post-Christmas slump. Get outside early: It gets hot over the holidays, and sometimes it can be too hot for exercise at 8 am, so getting up and about in the early hours of the day will help you keep your activity levels up. If you miss the window, a swim is always a cooler exercise option. Stay hydrated: We tend to drink a little more alcohol over the holidays, so counterbalance your alcoholic drinks with water. This one is especially useful for work dinners! Doing this will not only reduce the severity of the following day’s dehydration but will also help you dial down the amount of

alcohol you consume. Get involved in the fun stuff: If there is a game of backyard cricket on, jump in. If there is a slippery dip, jump on. If there is a day at the beach, go for a swim. Don’t spend life sitting on the sidelines – get in and have a go! It will keep you active and healthy, and who knows, you might just find your next passion. Give yourself permission to take a break: Each year it’s ok to have a little indulgence, and the summer holidays are a good opportunity to do just that. I give all my clients time off to let their hair down, forget about health and fitness and just have a good time. This way we can hit the next year of training fresh and re-energised. Whatever damage you do over the two weeks of Christmas we can sort out in the other 50 weeks of the year. Most importantly, enjoy the season. I’m currently taking expressions of interest for clients for 2024. If you are interested please contact me at ange@foreverfitter. com.au

A solution for pigmentation

A ‘before and after’ the WOW Transformation Depigmentation Peel at The Skin Coaches.

PIGMENTATION is a common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than others. Cooroy’s The Skin Coaches’ skin specialist Reegyn McElligott said pigmentation occurs when melanocytes over-produce pigment to protect themselves from factors such as trauma,

hormones and the environment. “While there are many different types of pigmentation, the most common conditions fall under three categories: epidermal (superficial), dermal/melasma (deeper), and junctional (combination of both). “At The Skin Coaches,

we look at correcting the formulation and production of pigmentation causes and addressing the issue of the formulation as well as removing it.” Reegyn said one way they do this is with a special peel. “The WOW Transformation Depigmentation Peel is a breakthrough treatment that utilises a two-phased approach to eliminate dark patches caused by melanin deposits. First, it deactivates a critical enzyme in the production of melanin responsible for the formation of dark spots. “Secondly, it utilises a proprietary blend of lightening agents and botanical ingredients to eliminate existing excess pigment deposits.” Reegyn said the peel is compatible with all skin types and colours. “The WOW peel treats pigmentation, melasma, sun spots, postpartum pigmentation, post-acne scars and more, and because of its very high safety margin it can be used all year round.”

Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay I AT a recent crime prevention forum with Queensland’s Shadow Minister for Police Dale Last, and Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, we heard some shocking statistics resulting from the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s mismanagement of the justice system. There is growing anger and frustration across Queensland at the revolving door for young offenders that, according to the Serious Repeat Offender Index, has seen 480 individuals responsible for more than 50 per cent of the youth crime in Queensland.

The watering down of the Youth Justice Act in 2015 by the Palaszczuk Labor Government has enabled a generation of hardcore repeat young offenders to threaten community safety. Dale and the LNP team have a clear plan to tackle the problem, and will ensure that youth offenders face the consequences of their actions. There is no quick fix for this problem. All levels of government have a role to play in community safety and need to work together to assist at-risk families, child safety, and to combat domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction, poor school attendance, and improve literacy standards. The Queensland Labor Government has lost control and if we want this to change and improve community safety, we need to change the government. Llew

Federal State School (FSS) teacher Gregg Dreise with a student.

A FEDERAL State School (FSS) teacher is being celebrated for going above and beyond in and out of the classroom. Parent Amy Gibson said teacher Gregg Dreise’s passion and talents have not only enriched the lives of students at FSS but have also resonated far beyond the Noosa hinterland. “Gregg is an Indigenous teacher and a proud Pomona resident. It’s from his rich heritage that he draws his deep connection to Indigenous culture and his unwavering commitment to sharing its wisdom.” Amy said Gregg’s impact as the school’s music and physical education teacher is nothing short of extraordinary. “He is known for his ability to weave Indigenous cultural knowledge into his teachings, making the learning experience not only informative but also deeply meaningful. “Through his teaching,

Gregg instils in his students a profound sense of belonging, identity, and connection to the land.” And his talents extend well beyond the classroom. “Gregg’s unique blend of Indigenous sounds and contemporary melodies has captivated audiences across the nation and he has had the privilege of performing at iconic venues like the Sydney Opera House. “He is not just a teacher and a musician – Gregg is also an accomplished author and artist. His books and artworks are a reflection of his deep connection to his Indigenous heritage and his passion for sharing these traditions with the world. “Through his creative endeavours, he provides a window into the rich tapestry of Indigenous culture, offering valuable insights that foster understanding and respect.” Amy said Gregg is a staunch supporter of the

Indigenous Literacy Foundation, an organisation dedicated to improving literacy rates in Indigenous communities across Australia. “His involvement in this important cause is a testament to his dedication to making a difference, one book at a time, and recently his artwork adorned the new Noosa Council mobile library.” Amy said in celebrating Gregg’s remarkable journey they are reminded of the incredible talent that can emerge from the most unassuming places. “His story is a testament to the power of education, culture, and community. We are proud to have Gregg as a cherished member of our community and look forward to witnessing the continued growth of his many talents and his impact on the world.” Amy said there is a playgroup available for all to join every Wednesday at 9 am during school term.

NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) student leaders have been given copies of Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart’s autobiography detailing a life-changing event she endured 23 years ago. Cr Stewart said she spent a morning with the 2024 student leaders, talking about resilience, overcoming adversity, hope for the future and daring to fail. “After that session, which was for me a wonderful opportunity to talk with and share stories with our future

young people leading the charge.” NDSHS Year 12 Coordinator Fiona Young said the 2024 student leaders were inspired by Cr Stewart’s motivational speech during their Student Leadership Development Day. “Her story of overcoming adversity and having determination to make a difference is full of leadership lessons for our future captains. “They are thoroughly enjoying her book, Standing on My Own Two Feet.”

Ladies tee up for cancer

Cooroy Community Bowls Club promotes health through bowls

The annual charity golf day, Tee Up For Cancer, raised $2,700 to go towards breast cancer research and breast cancer trials.

Bowlers enjoy the health benefits of bowls at the Cooroy Community Bowls Club.

COOROY Golf Club’s women golfers teed up for cancer on Thursday 19 October. The annual charity golf day, Tee Up For Cancer, raises funds to go towards breast cancer research and breast cancer trials. Cooroy Ladies captain Wendy O’Hare said the day was extremely well supported with a field of 82 players. “The golf course, clubhouse and players were a picture of pink and $2,700

was raised including a very generous donation of $500 from the Sunday Social Club golfers. “Winners of the day were Leith Barr and Ian McInnes. “A day such as this would not be possible without the support of all our sponsors, Cooroy Golf Club and all our members who worked so hard. “Thank you to everyone for your support.”

COOROY Community Bowls Club is calling for anyone looking for a low-impact exercise to come and experience the health benefits of playing bowls. President Maureen Bottomley said bowls can improve fitness, coordination and confidence. “Health professionals recommend playing bowls, particularly for older people, as it provides several health benefits – including improved fitness, improved

coordination and skill development, increased confidence and self-esteem, enhanced mental wellbeing and community connectedness and support. “Walking with the extra weight of a bowl in your hands helps to improve flexibility, mobility and core strength. “Lawn bowls help your body to utilise oxygen better and contribute to good blood circulation and blood pressure.

“And because playing lawn bowls requires precision and concentration, it can enhance hand and eye coordination.” Maureen said lawn bowls can also help with mental health. “Exercise releases endorphins which trigger a positive feeling in your body, reducing stress and improving your mood. “Lawn bowls can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age, gender or physical

condition. “The simplicity of the game and the low-impact exercise it involves makes it attractive for all.” The Cooroy Community Bowls Club, located at Your Mates BowlsPub, 5 Opal Street, Cooroy, offers social bowls every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon. “There is no need to book; simply turn up at noon.” For further information contact Maureen on 0419 588 661.

Karate kid kicks gold

Kyzer with his medals.

A COOROY student has taken home four medals and world champion titles at the International Sport Karate Association World Cup in Sydney. Noosa Christian College Year 9 student Kyzer Mostert

won two gold, one silver and one bronze at the event in October. His club, Rimmington Martial Arts in Gympie, came 14th place out of 200 clubs (dōjō’s).

Students get ‘peak’ karate experience LOCAL karate students recently enjoyed an outdoor mountain training seminar by Karate Community sensei Peter Zarb. Wearing traditional karate uniforms and carrying walking sticks, the students hiked to the peak of Mount Tinbeerwah. Peter said students were led through a series of exercises known as White Crane and Thunder Stick. “Karate is well known as a Japanese system of self-protection. Upon researching the history and origins of this amazingly practical combat art, we begin to see a beautiful harmony of collaboration from its initial birthplace of Okinawa. “Karate is like a giant tree: the trunk of the tree grows up from Okinawa, its roots shoot out towards China, and its branches reach out all over the world from Japan. Our style of Goju Ryu Karate’s chief influence is Southern Chinese White Crane Boxing.” After being guided through a martial-healing form known as Crane at Play, students practised a more

Students at Karate Community’s outdoor mountain training seminar.

Karate Community holds many outdoor social events throughout the year. “We love training outdoors – nature energises and nurtures us. Being on top of a mountain getting fresh air while practising activities is really good for the soul. “There will be many more of these events in the future.” To finish off the seminar, families and friends then

gathered at the Noosa Botanic Gardens for a social lunch. “Building positive relationships amongst peers is a fundamental part of our training. My partner Stephanie and I love creating opportunities like these for students and their families to get to know one another. It is these kinds of meaningful connections that build strong communities.”

Next, participants used their walking sticks to begin learning Thunder Stick techniques. “This form has a very community-minded history. It was created in the 1960s by a Kung Fu teacher called Chen Pan Ling when concerned local senior citizens requested he help them defend themselves against pickpockets, stray dogs and similar worries. “For this reason, the form is very simple and very practical in its use.” Peter said Karate Community chose Mount Tinbeerwah for this activity because of its ease of ascent for all age groups and levels of fitness, its centralised location, and its beautiful scenery and amenities. “We keep everything as local as we can; this is our community and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

I STARTED this article with an inclination to rant about the “I checked with Dr Google …” trend when presented with an ailing pet. I am certainly not personally averse to a bit of ‘googlin’ myself – so much information! However, there is a downside to knowledge without context. Most people are somewhat invested in their diligence and confident that they are on the right track once they have arrived at the best-fit answer for the problem at hand. So, what could possibly go wrong? There is the tick earnestly removed after strenuous objection from the dog due to it being a nipple. There is the fly bite that turned out to be an aggressive skin cancer. There is the tree snake that Google failed to identify as an eastern brown, resulting in the sad loss of two out of the three dogs that attacked it. Which brings me to the main point. Yes, the snakes are out and about, and the results of pets tampering with them are once again coming to our attention. For the most part, snakes prefer to avoid confrontation, but under duress most species do what they can to

survive. Most of the serious bites I see in my practice are due to eastern browns, but we also see red-bellied black snake envenomation and bites from whip snakes and keelbacks. Diagnosis of a snake bite can be straightforward if the event is witnessed but can also present a challenge. In the case of red bellies, the bites usually leave obvious swelling and bruising. Due to the nature of the toxin which affects the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, we are often presented with a patient that is weak and may be having trouble breathing due to these effects. Some other laboratory tests can be used to support the diagnosis. In the case of eastern brown snakes, symptoms can be a little less obvious. It can be difficult or impossible to find a bite and the only obvious symptom may be paralysis, which needs to be differentiated from tick poisoning. In some patients, particularly cats, the paralysis can take some time to develop. Other symptoms include salivation, vomiting, weakness, trembling and collapse. In addition to neurotoxic effects, eastern

brown snake venom contains compounds that lead to the blood being unable to clot. Severe bleeding requiring blood transfusion commonly occurs. Whip snake and keelback bites are generally not fatal but result in a swollen and painful bite reaction. It goes without saying that if there is a live snake in the vicinity do not attempt to interfere with it, but dead specimens or remnants can assist with diagnosis. Prompt veterinary attention following any suspected snake bite gives the best chance of survival and we carry stock of appropriate antivenom at all times. Snake Catcher Noosa’s Luke Huntley with a red-bellied black snake.

CHRISTMAS time is here so what does that mean for snakes? Snake Catcher Noosa’s Luke Huntley said with the breeding season over, male snakes have stopped trying to find the girls and are now finding something to eat. “The girls are finding places to lay their eggs, or have their live babies, depending on the snake species. Compost piles and around pools are prime spots for snakes to lay eggs. During this time I do a lot of digging for snake eggs. “Female snakes that give birth to live young, like red bellies, will find a nice safe spot they can go into and out of to get sun. The mother snake uses that heat to incubate the young within her or, if she has eggs, heats herself then goes back to her clutch and wraps around it to keep them warm.” Luke said this time of year he gets lots of pythons in chicken coops, snakes eating things and sleeping. “The urgency of snake season drops away for a bit over Christmas. After the breeding season, the snakes are knackered. There is rain coming as well so that usually means they’ll be finding places to get out of the rain. “While there’s still a bit going on with snakes, it will be slower for a month or so but keep an eye out. My team and I are always here 24/7 if you need us.” Call Luke on 0499 920 290.

polished concrete flooring in the living/kitchen, new carpets in bedrooms, Tasmanian oak benches in the kitchen, stainless-steel appliances, striking copper splashback, two split-system air-conditioners, ceiling fans, direct balcony access from the master, solar hot water, near new Biocycle system, and 6.7 kW solar power. The interiors are elegant and bring out the home’s warmth and charm. Everything has been so tastefully done – it’s just right, nothing has been overlooked or overdone. When you open the front door, you are pleasantly surprised, and the entire home does not disappoint. With a flyover on the rear

deck, you can relax and entertain in all weather enjoying the elevated outlook and prized northerly aspect. When it’s hot and steamy soak in the tank-style pool, or on a cooler evening sit around the fire pit under the sparkling stars. The land is gently sloping towards the rear, and it is worth noting that it was flood-free in 2022. With a green reserve adjoining, the sense of space and light is enhanced, and there’s a clump of leafy vegetation around the pool and deck area, with the rest of the land a grassy expanse – leave like this for ease of maintenance or create terraced garden beds; the choice is yours.
