Woolworths begins community engagement

TWO years after buying land in Cooroy, Woolworths is starting its community engagement process.

The supermarket giant is preparing to submit an application for a new development at 125 Myall Street, Cooroy, and is

seeking feedback from the community to help design the master plan.

A Woolworths spokesperson told the Cooroy Rag, the 6.6-hectare site opposite Cooroy Golf Course will house a state-of-the-art Woolworths supermarket and also incorporate additional community facilities.

“There are plenty of op-

tions for what this additional use could be, including a childcare centre, healthcare facility or residential aged care, to name a few.

“We need the community's help in deciding what complementary facilities are desired in the area so we can make that dream a reality through our investment.

“It's important to us that the community has their say.”

The spokesperson said Woolworths will be considering an overall design that reflects Cooroy's heritage and its unique village feel while combining it with environmentally sustainable measures:

“Our desire is to create a

development that enriches the lifestyle of Cooroy and nearby hinterland towns.

“We believe our plans will contribute positively to Cooroy and the region, creating hundreds of new jobs, providing a wider range of fresh produce, grocery and household items, along with specialty retail and facilities designed with the

community in mind.

“We're working very closely with Noosa Council and look forward to receiving feedback from local residents over the coming months.”

Residents can have their say on the development via Woolworths’ dedicated project website: cooroywoolworths.com.

MY husband has a history of surprising his mum.

Cooroy History

So as we were travelling south to the snow, when our route took us within two hours of my parents-in-law’s home in Griffith, we had to surprise them.

The problem was, after years of being surprised, my mother-in-law was expecting us to surprise her.

So we had to throw her off the scent.

We photoshopped an image of our kids standing beside the Dog on the Tuckerbox in Gundagai, three hours from Griffith, and sent it to my mother-in-law. While my photoshopping skills leave a lot to be desired, it worked.

Ten minutes later, we parked our car and van down their street and snuck up to their front door.

When we rang the bell we knew we were the last people she would be expecting; she thought we were in Gundagai, 200 km away.

So when she opened the door she was surprised, truly surprised. We both got a good reprimand for our efforts – and a big hug.

We spent a lovely few days with them in Griffith, visiting the Whitton Malt House in Darlington Point, the historic Bagtown Cemetery, and catching up with old family friends.

Cooroy intersections 'concerning'

MEMBER for Noosa Sandy

Bolton has again raised the lack of progress to improve the safety of Cooroy’s intersections as “concerning”.

While it is not in the Noosa state electorate, Sandy has stated previously, in public and to TMR, that the safety of the intersections at Diamond and Elm Street and Myall and Elm Street needs to be addressed as a priority, and again put a Question on Notice to Minister Bailey in Parliament recently.

As highlighted in Sandy’s budget reply speech, even though the intersections are not in her electorate, the lack of progress on the Cooroy intersections is of concern to her office.

“Both Noosa and Nicklin state electorate residents are at risk daily from these.”

A TMR spokesperson said they have undertaken early planning for future upgrades at the two intersections.

“Traffic signals and roundabouts were investigated, and signals were determined as the preferred option.

“Traffic signals are preferred because single-lane roundabouts would not

meet forecast traffic needs, there would be significant impacts to neighbouring properties as a result of the land required to accommodate dual-lane roundabouts, and signals provide the safest crossing option for bike riders and pedestrians.”

The TMR spokesperson said traffic signals can be programmed to respond in the most efficient way depending on where the greatest traffic demand is being experienced.

“For example, during morning peak periods, priority can be given to traffic heading towards school drop-offs if that is determined to be the highest priority.

“The same signals can reverse this priority in the afternoon peak of the same day. The signal timing can be reviewed and optimised to respond to changing demands over time as traffic patterns evolve.

“The signals can also be set to respond ‘on demand’, which uses vehicle detector loops to communicate with the signals when motorists arrive at the intersection, which triggers a change in the lights. This is partic-

ularly useful in periods of low demand such as in the middle of the night.”

Sandy said while TMR identified traffic signals as the preferred option for safety, pedestrian access, and to avoid private land resumptions, however, at that time, the community did not support this and favoured roundabouts.

"TMR has committed to bringing this back to the community for feedback, at which time the previous analysis and recommendations can be revisited, as well technical aspects and current road standard requirements discussed in more detail," Sandy said.

In response to Sandy’s recent letter to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Sandy’s office has been advised no funding is currently allocated.

However, in an effort to have these intersections made a priority for upgrading, Sandy is asking residents to “add their voices” by writing to TMR.

“Once there has been some feedback and if required, in conjunction with the Nicklin State MP, we shall request a community

meeting for TMR to re-engage with the community on this.”

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said he stands with Sandy on the issue.

"I continue to advocate for a solution for the community, and will always fight for more and better funding for our roads.

“I join with Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and TMR in encouraging local residents to have their say on the issue by providing their feedback directly to TMR.”

TMR is also encouraging residents to send feedback about the intersections to be used to inform future planning stages when funding becomes available.

Email TMR at NCR_Planning@tmr.qld.gov.au.

Dear Editor

For 20-odd years, Cooroy was asked to unite with one voice to receive the best option for better traffic flow but petitions were largely ignored, surveys ignored, and letters ignored.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for 30 years has fobbed Cooroy off with the same yearly constant bluffs such as lack of state fund-

ing, they have to consult with all parties, they will push ahead anyway with lights (the cheap option), or no funding even for planning.TMR has had plans on its table for 20 years and all parties have been consulted multiple times.

Lights will not cater for increased traffic demands but will increase the traffic grid.

Lights at Diamond Street will only infuriate drivers with another set 160 yards [146 metres] away at the school, and signal responses will not be as effective as continual roundabout traffic flow.

I believe $42 million would see two roundabouts (one at Diamond and Elm Streets, and one at Myall and Elm Streets), and a doubling of the rail overpass (on Elm Street) which would include a footpath with a bike lane, guaranteeing no full accident blockages on the overpass. There is no private land resumption and very little to no state land taken up.

Pedestrians maintain safety with raised roundabouts so the traffic comes to 5 km/ hr, wider islands, and there is only the need to look in

one direction, the exception being the petrol station on the corner.

Yes, signals will be safer, but not if roundabouts are raised, and single-lane roundabouts have never been an issue because they have to accommodate long loads.

There are also discussions continuing with a Cooroy bypass but that is secondary to the intersections.

TMR can prefer lights all they want but Cooroy has voted for roundabouts. Cooroy’s future prosperity with visitor convenience will rely on roundabouts.

If you agree for TMR to implement two raised roundabouts (bringing traffic to 5km/hr) approaching Cooroy plus doubling the width of the rail overpass (allowing a bike lane and footpath), please sign my petitions in Cooroy at Belvedere Newsagency, Rambling Rose Flowers, The Art Hub and Kookaburra Takeaway. Plans for the intersections are at the back of all petitions. The petition closes on 30 September.

Time to Sparkle

COOROY’S Lawnville Road bridge will undergo a $2.33 million renovation.

The existing two-lane timber bridge will be replaced by a new two-lane concrete bridge.

Acting mayor Cr Frank Wilkie said the 15.8-metre timber Lawnville Road bridge is due for replacement based on its age and condition.

“The council is pleased to deliver the Lawnville Road Bridge Replacement project to provide a safer and smoother trip for hinterland residents and visitors both in vehicles and on bicycles.” Carrying about 1,000 vehicles daily, the new concrete bridge, to be built by Ark Construction in the same location, will require less maintenance and has been designed to ensure it serves the community well for more than 100 years,

Council said.

Work is scheduled to start in early August and includes the removal of the current two-lane timber bridge, installation of a two-lane concrete bridge, associated road reconstruction, and widening of the road approach and bridge to accommodate two threemetre-wide traffic lanes and two 1.5-metre-wide on-road shoulders.

The existing bridge will be closed and traffic detoured via Cooroy Belli Creek Road during the works which are expected to be completed by mid-November, weather and construction conditions permitting.

To reduce any unnecessary impact, Council said it has assisted Ark Construction by liaising with emergency, waste collection and bus services so they can adjust their routes accord-

ingly.

“I would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience during the road’s closure while the new bridge is being built.

“The replacement of the Lawnville Road bridge is one of several bridge projects Noosa Council is delivering as part of our Bridge Renewal Program for 2023/24,” Cr Wilkie said.

The Lawnville Road bridge replacement is part of the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program and Noosa Council's Bridge Replacement Program, which is delivering new and improved infrastructure for bridges across the shire.

The Australian Government has committed almost $1.9 million, and Noosa Council close to half a million dollars, towards the $2.33 million project.

CONSTRUCTION of a new footpath in Cooroy has begun.

The 1.5-metre-wide pathway on Miva Street will include a pedestrian refuge aligned with the existing kerb ramp and will connect to the existing bus stop on Cooroy Noosa Road.

Noosa Council communi-

cation manager Ken Furdek said the project is one of the significant pathway improvements identified in the Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy and Implementation Plan (NCWSIP), aimed at creating a safe and connected network for cyclists and pedestrians.

“These works are proudly

funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Package in association with Noosa Council.” Construction began on 17 July and is estimated to take around two weeks, weather permitting. During this, traffic control measures will be implemented as necessary.

A TEWANTIN man is one bread tie away from having a unique calendar.

John Bartlett, 75, has spent over 30 years collecting the plastic and now cardboard, dated twist ties from hundreds of loaves of

bread.

Daughter Bernadette Gibson said it hasn't been a straightforward process.

“The obvious strategy of simply buying bread to fill gaps in his calendar has not always gone according to

plan.

John's bread tie collection makes unique calendar Team ready to rally

“Sometimes, Dad needed to head to the store four to five days prior to the date he was chasing.

“Sometimes the supermarket was out of his bread of choice or out of bread altogether.

“If he went to the store a day late or a day early, he would miss the date he was chasing. Any missed dates meant waiting a full year for another opportunity.

“And each year there are fewer dates to collect, so it has been increasingly harder for him to complete the collection.

“He even has the elusive leap year bread tie,” Bernadette said.

It has taken John over 30 years to procure this collection which is proudly contained in a display folder in calendar format, and now he only needs one more bread tie to complete his collection.

“He is so close. His next opportunity to complete the calendar is coming up in a month's time.

“The last bread tie he needs for his collection is August 22.”

Noosa Council’s ‘back to basics’ budget

NOOSA Council has announced its ‘back to basics’ budget for 2023–24 with the average residential ratepayer facing a 5.5 per cent increase – equivalent to an extra $1.72 per week – on their total rates notice.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said it’s been the toughest budget faced by this council.

“We continue to deliver an $80 million flood recovery program, and deal with inflationary pressures and massive land valuation increases for the second successive year.

“We have taken a sensible approach to our spending – for most property owners, rates increases are below CPI – while dealing with the increasing costs of building new infrastructure and maintaining services,” she said.

While the average residential ratepayer faces a 5.5 per cent increase on their total rates notice, 4,000 property owners will have a drop in their total rates bill, equivalent to a cup of coffee every week, because of the mechanisms implemented to combat the unprecedented land valuations.

“We have worked extremely hard to mitigate the extraordinary land valuation

increases – which averaged a 62.5 per cent increase across the shire – as well as ease the burden on ratepayers as much as possible,” Cr Stewart said.

Cr Stewart said Council wasn’t immune to the current inflationary conditions, construction costs which had risen by as much as 30 per cent, and rising utility charges.

“Like all households and businesses, we also deal with these rising costs, and this budget represents responsible decision-making in extremely challenging economic times,” she said.

The ‘back to basics’ budget has a focus on building infrastructure, helping pensioners, and maintaining liveability to ensure a bright future for the shire.

Nearly 5,000 pensioners have been given a helping hand by consolidating the pensioner rebates, with all eligible pensioners now receiving the full rebate of $230 per year, whether they are single or a couple.

“We know pensioners have been hit hard by the cost-of-living pressures so all councillors were unanimous about making the rebate more equitable for all eligible pensioners,” Cr Stewart said.

There’s also been a freeze on levies: the Environment, Sustainable Transport, Heritage, and Bushfire Resilience and Recovery levies remain at last year’s amounts.

The budget also responds to the newly adopted Corporate Plan, delivering a number of key initiatives in year one such as progressing the Destination Management Plan, starting the Reconciliation Action Plan, and continuing to advocate and secure funding partnerships to implement the Housing Action Plan.

An investment of $39.4 million is for capital works; almost a third of the funds will be spent on the road and transport network and a further $6 million to replace or upgrade bridges.

“This budget has a focus of improving our liveability, prosperity, and continuing to support the preservation of our natural environment.”

Cr Stewart said the 2023–24 budget gets the balance right by putting residents first while maintaining fundamental services to the community.

“We have put our residents first and this budget strikes a balance between investing in our future and living within our means.”

Celebrating 100 years of Cooroy Ambulance

COOROY Ambulance Service celebrated its 100-year anniversary at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on 1 July. Many attended an event, staged by the Cooroy Local Ambulance Committee and Queensland Ambulance Service History and Heritage, to celebrate and pay tribute to the long history of Cooroy ambulance services, which began as a Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB) Honorary Centre in 1923.

Cooroy & District Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) president Linley Macleod said she would like to thank all those who supported the event.

“The celebration of the remarkable service to our community by ambulance officers, superintendents, the QATB committees who funded them from 1923 until 1991, and the QAS paramedics and LACs of today, was a true community effort.”

Linley said people travelled long distances to the event and a number donated family service memo-

rabilia, thereby ensuring a lasting memory of a loved one’s service was in safe hands.

“The hall was filled with the buzz of unexpected reunions and reminiscing of former and current QAS officers-in-charge, retired paramedics and family members of those who had served, all enjoying the moment.”

In attendance were Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, QAS Commissioner Craig Emery, Assistant Commissioner Stephen Gough, Noosa SES Local Controller Warren Kuskopf, LAC Advisory Council members Josie Meng and Desley Cunnington, Dr Dave Kirkman, and OICs from Cooroy, Noosa, Pomona and Tewantin and QAS paramedics, who were presented with medals for long service and state disaster participation.

“Cooroy Rotary provided much-needed transport assistance for display items and donated the sausage sizzle. I am told over 250 sausages were prepared

and enjoyed by those attending.

“Cooroy RSL donated $1,000, the CWA volunteered their time to oversee the kitchen and refreshments, and the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group Inc. and Noosa Museum members provided their time and an amazing array of memorabilia, static displays and local stories of working in challenging times, fundraising, and entertaining personal exploits, and manned the exhibits to chat with visitors and QAS Community Educator Suzette Dakin and the Black Mountain First Responders were on hand showcasing and teaching the life-saving skill of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“The day was a fitting testament to the men and women of the ambulance service who continue to provide comfort, support and first-class frontline emergency service 24/7 to the community,” Linley said. See more photos on page 21.

Couple’s Cooroy life a mystery

Multi Award Winning

A MAN is seeking information on his parents who lived in Cooroy in the 1930s.

Michael West said his parents, Mavis and Harold West, lived in Cooroy for a year in the mid-1930s but that’s all he and his siblings know.

“Mum always said that she and Dad lived in Cooroy for a short while during the Depression years.

“We don’t know how or why they ended up in Cooroy, so it’s always been a bit of a mystery to us. Perhaps they had relatives or friends there or Dad was just looking for work

wherever he could get it, which was normal during the Depression years.

“But we do know that Mum made ice cream and Dad sold it while they were in Cooroy. We assume Dad sold the ice cream door to door but we don’t really know.”

Michael said he does know his parents were both living in Gin Gin (west of Bundaberg) prior to moving to Cooroy, and moved back to Gin Gin after Cooroy.

“To add to the confusion, Mum and Dad were married in Bundaberg in March 1936. I have their certificate

of marriage.

“My sister Loretta was also born in 1936 and believes that she was also in Cooroy as a baby.”

Micheal said they have no record of a Cooroy address and unfortunately didn’t ask enough questions before Mavis and Harold both passed away.

“There’s nothing important here but it’s just one minor piece of our family jigsaw that we are curious about.”

Do you remember a couple selling ice cream in Cooroy in the 1930s or know someone who does?

FINDING and retaining staff is one of the biggest challenges facing local businesses today.

Regional Training Services Queensland managing director David Asher said, as a member of the Pomona & District Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Noosa, he hears a lot of discussion around labour and skill shortages and how they are being exacerbated in the region by high rental and property prices.

“One solution that is being embraced by some forward-thinking employers is to build up their own workforces by putting on trainees, many of whom are school-based.

“They live locally so there are no affordable accommodation issues, and because the traineeship is treated by their school as a subject attracting QCE points,

they are generally highly motivated.

“From an employer’s point of view, they gain a flexible workforce that is available at peak times such as school holidays, and who don’t move on for at least the duration of the traineeship (up to two years).”

David said if that isn’t enough, there are government financial incentives for the employer, and the trainee is supported throughout their studies by the registered training organisation (RTO).

“The Queensland state government contributes the majority of the cost of the training for the eligible person of your choice. Upon completion of the traineeship, the federal government will pay you an incentive payment.”

David said Regional Training Services Qld is working with many

businesses in the Sunshine Coast region to create linkages between employers and suitable potential trainees.

“The ability to match training to the employer’s needs is one of the big benefits of a modern traineeship. This flexibility means that the most urgently needed skills can be prioritised, enabling the trainee to be a productive team member sooner.

“New employees, and in some cases existing employees, can be put through traineeships. Full- and part-time staff may be eligible along with school-based trainees.”

If you’d like to find out more about the benefits of having trainees in your business, contact the Regional Training team on 5481 2486 or email admin@regionaltraining.qld.edu.au.

Sell pre-loved items with Cooroy Car Parts

PRE-OWNED car, bike, boat, retro and related items can now be sold via Cooroy Car Parts.

The Maple Street shop has opened a second-hand section where items from the public are sold on consignment.

Cooroy Car Parts owners Adam and Mouette said customers can bring in items for them to display and try to sell on their behalf either for a percentage or an agreed price, as long as it’s realistic.

“The items have to be either car, bike or boat related, other items such as retro or vintage memorabilia are welcome too.

“We have already successfully sold a lot

of items on behalf of our customers, as more people start bringing stuff in and using it, we hope it will evolve into an interesting, ever-changing place to visit.”

Adam said they also welcome people to put ads up for larger items they wish to sell, such as cars, bikes, boats and trailers.

“Although we do not have an official noticeboard yet, people can bring in one photo no larger than half an A4 page, and a description, and I will make up the ad to go in the window of our shop.” Cooroy Car Parts is at 10 Maple St, Cooroy, opposite the skate park.

Real-world sounds, minimal distraction

More than 7 out of 10 hearing aid users are challenged by disruptive sounds.

These include:

• Ringing phones

• Blowing wind

• Clicking keyboards

• Slamming doors

• Rattling keys

• Creaking doors

• Tapping fingertips

Soft and loud sounds are everywhere. They are the sounds of the real world.

Together, they provide richness and meaning to an environment. But for

most hearing aid users, those everyday sounds can be disruptive, which can be challenging on a daily basis.

As a hearing aid user, you want those sounds to be available without being disruptive.

You want to hear the turn signal in your car without stealing your focus. Or hear the sound of chopping vegetables, without interrupting a conversation with dinner guests.

Traditional hearing aid technology has been too slow to react, leading to unnatural overamplification of these sounds.

Introducing Oticon Real™. Oticon Real™ introduces new innovative

technology — designed to handle the real sounds of life.

Oticon Real™ provides access to all relevant sounds, in balance, with exceptional detail and clarity. These sounds are produced with minimal disruption to remain comfortable, focused, and sharp in the real world.

We invite you to a free trial^ of Oticon Real™ hearing devices. It’s risk-free and without obligation. Call 5443 6633 to take advantage of this offer.

IT was a privilege and a pleasure to attend the Cooroy Rotary Club’s 30th anniversary and changeover dinner. Thank you to Andrew Aves for the invitation, and your dedication and service to the Cooroy Rotary Club as their outgoing president. And a big congratulations to Chris Durie as the incoming president. Queensland Rotary has been running in Queensland for 100 years this year, having been founded in 1923 with a membership of just 16. In that time they have made immeasurable contributions to our communities, including Vision Queensland, Riding for the Disabled, and the Queensland Drought Appeal.

I joined with Treasurer Cameron Dick, MP for Caloundra Jason Hunt, and members of the LifeFlight family to announce $18.6 million in additional funding in this year’s state budget for the vital rescue service. This investment will provide for a new three-bay

hangar at Sunshine Coast Airport which will house two helicopters for the Coast and a backup helicopter for Bundaberg. Our government will always back crucial health services like LifeFlight, as they literally are the difference between life and death for many Queenslanders.

The Palaszczuk Government takes community health and safety seriously, which is why we’re inviting Queenslanders to have their say on a newly released discussion paper proposing measures to crack down on irresponsible dog owners and keep the community safe from dangerous dogs. These proposals include a new offence with potential jail time for serious attacks, a standardised state-wide requirement for all dogs to be effectively controlled in public places, and the banning of restricted dog breeds. Anyone who wishes to contribute can do so at daf.engagementhub.com. au/dog-laws. Rob

NOOSA Council recently handed down its record $171 million budget. The focus has been firmly on building infrastructure, continuing to look after the environment and providing vital community services while keeping rate increases minimal. It’s a budget that is financially responsible in the current economic climate, and for most property owners rates increases are below CPI. The average residential ratepayer faces a 5.5 per cent increase on their total rates notice – equivalent to an extra $1.72 per week. In fact, 4,000 property owners will have a drop in their total rates bill because of the mechanisms implemented to combat the unprecedented land valuations. Seventy-five per cent of ratepayers will have an average rate rise that is lower than CPI. Although we did our absolute best to reduce the impact of state-government-imposed land valuations (a whop-

ping 62.5 per cent average increase across our shire) a number of outlying properties were unable to be captured and will incur a significant rate rise. As a council, we worked incredibly hard to mitigate the impact of these land valuations across our shire on our residents as we understand the financial pressures people across our shire are facing due to substantial increases in the cost of living as we, too, are facing them. With this in mind, all eligible pensioners are now to receive the full rebate of $230 per year whether they are single or a couple and we have frozen all levies to keep the rates bill as low as we can. This budget however delivers for our community, and the $39.4 million capital works program is on top of the $80 million flood recovery program funded by the Qld Reconstruction Authority but which we as a council have to deliver through our infrastructure team.

Hinterland capital works include $496,000 to build missing links in the hinterland pathway network (Walking and Cycling Strategy Commitment); $75,000.00 to entirely replace the park furniture at Cooran Park; $45,000.00 for the restoration of the Noosa Botanic Gardens Wedding Chapel; $2.08 million for Lawnville Road Bridge renewal; $475,000 to continue the shire-wide gravel road re-sheeting program, and $4.29 million for the shire-wide road reseal program. We’ve put aside around $1 million for parks, playgrounds and sports facilities this year and $1.5 million to upgrade public amenities. When it comes to our environment, we have a 50 per cent increase in investment for land conservation and rehabilitation work to facilitate more Land for Wildlife and Voluntary Conservation agreements, and funding for our environmental grants has increased by 6 per cent,

as well as over $1 million allocated to community grants this financial year. To take advantage of our 5 per cent early bird discount on general rates, be sure to pay by 18 August 2023. Finally, 30 July 2023 is National Tree Day and council has partnered with the Kin Kin Bushcare group to host a local planting event between 8 am and 12 noon. Morning tea will be provided and the team from VIP Wildlife will be on hand offering locals the chance to check out Australian reptiles and insects. For more information including local planting location details and to register to attend, visit treeday.planetark.org.

IN the last couple of weeks, my good friends and parliamentary colleagues, Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud, and the Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Barnaby Joyce, visited communities in the Noosa hinterland.

David and I met with representatives from the local groups in Cooroy and Pomona that received funding from the Australian Government to support their delivery of services and activities in the community.

David and I also were present at the very first graduation ceremony of PTSD Dogs Australia at the Cooroy RSL. We heard how this local organisation is transforming the lives of both dogs and people and I acknowledge Angie Weeks and her dedicated team for the work they do in rescuing dogs who rescue veterans and first responders.

PTSD Dogs Australia, Pomona Meals on Wheels, and the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, all received funding

O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay

from the Volunteer Grants program. The Lions Club also received funding from the Saluting Their Service program to install a memorial seat and plaque at the Pomona Rotunda War Memorial. The Noosa Museum was awarded funding from the Stronger Communities Program, which will be used to protect their valuable data and pave the way for making their collection available to the wider public.

I regularly send out information about current and upcoming grant opportunities. Small grants can make a big difference, and I encourage community and service groups to contact my office and ensure they are included on my distribution list.

Barnaby Joyce also visited Wide Bay recently, and together we met with members of the Tewantin-Noosa, Cooroy Pomona, and Mary Valley RSL Sub Branches as part of our policy development process.

We had productive and wide-ranging discussions with veterans on topics

including mental health, drug and alcohol services, education, and advocacy, as well as DVA benefits and processing times. We came away with a number of policy recommendations raised by sub branch members, that merit further evaluation.

It is clear that we need to be doing more to support our veterans, ensuring the services they need are available to them. If Australia is to provide the programs and supports that veterans who have served our nation need, we must examine policies that boost recruitment, incentivise military service, and improve transitional arrangements to help people move from military to civilian life.

It is easy for us to say thank you for your service to our veterans, but far harder to put in place the resources they need in civilian life. It shouldn’t be, and we need to fix this. It just needs the will to do it, and Barnaby and I have given our commitment to not give up the fight.

NOOSA Shire has been active and vibrant throughout the month of July with bright blue skies with warm sunshine reviving the senses. Connecting people and building community resilience into the future remains a key priority of the Noosa Council.

The Floating Land Exhibition has been alive showcasing events throughout the shire from the hinterland to the coast.

The opening launch of Floating Land: Us and Them highlighted the work of the ‘Brotherhood of the Wordless’, a unique group of writers and poets with assorted disabilities that impair their ability to communicate; their words and ideas come to life using facilitated communication. The writers on the day, with support from their carers, provided the audience with an inspiring array of works with profound insights into life and love. Exhibiting artists bring to Floating Land proactive and engaging works for viewers to experience around ideas

of identity, conversations and connections.

For those looking ahead, mark your calendar for the opening of Experimenta Life Forms: International Triennial of Media Art which is to open at the Noosa Regional Gallery on 6 August. The exhibition is set to feature a diversity of art forms including robotics, screen-based works, and participatory and generative art showcasing 20 artworks by leading Australian and international artists who are making significant contributions to the changing notions of life, at a time when research findings and new life forms are emerging through technological and biological adaptation.

Plastic Free July has been spreading the message to eliminate single-use plastics from circulation by supporting the switch to more sustainable alternatives such as reusable or 100 per cent compostable items – given it can take up to 30 years for a single-use, takeaway coffee cup to break down.

Grant funds to boost the environment and climate change initiatives have seen 22 projects and community organisations set to share in more than $422,000 in this round of Noosa Council Environment and Climate Change Grants. For those interested, the next round of Environment Projects Grants will open February 2024. National NAIDOC Week celebrations are beingwere held across Noosa Shire to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, giving everyone the opportunity to learn about First Nations’ cultures and histories and participate in celebration.

Living Well Noosa is a free and low-cost, preventative health initiative developed to improve the health and well-being of the Noosa community. The program offers some low-cost and free activities to improve your physical, social, mental and spiritual wellbeing. “Therefore, it is essential that you book online early to secure your opportunity to

An opportunity to enrich the lifestyle of Cooroy and near hinterland towns

Since 2021, Woolworths has owned the vacant six-hectare site at 125 Myall Street Cooroy, opposite the Cooroy Golf Club. As we begin to prepare a Development Application for a supermarket and other complementary uses, we are seeking local community input about additional services that would enrich and support the Cooroy and hinterland lifestyle.

Have your say

We will be considering an overall design that reflects Cooroy’s heritage, and the unique village feel, with environmentally sustainable measures. We would like to hear your ideas before we progress with our plans.

The community is invited to contribute at an early stage to ensure plans best meet the needs of local people and their families. It is important we hear from you to contribute to the design of the site and the integration with the fabric of the community.

Where to find out more and make comment

Please visit: www.cooroywoolworths.com to find out more and make comment.

Cooroy celebration for five graduating PTSD assistance dogs

rience as an ex-police officer living with PTSD.

“It’s about having the right support and it’s about having the right people and that is what PTSD Dogs is about. The dogs are trained in a way to respond to their owners, and it is amazing the difference that makes. The connection between dog and owner is so vital.”

He congratulated the team on their work and announced a $3,000 Volunteer Grant for the organisation. The graduation ceremony featured five dogs and their handlers, all of whom suffer from PTSD.

fell apart with my marriage and my kids, and I have five girls so I really wanted to work on that.

“Four years later two of my girls live with me and the younger ones come over all the time, so now I have a relationship with my girls that I wouldn’t have if Buddy hadn’t come into my life. It changed everything and that’s basically what a dog can do for their handler,” Laurie said.

Shaun Elliot, another handler, demonstrated the tasks that his dog Blaze performs for him, such as picking up keys, bags, and walking sticks.

FIVE psychiatric assistance dogs from PTSD Dogs Australia were the guests of honour at a graduation event attended by 50 people at the Cooroy RSL Club recently.

The dogs, which were rescued from pounds and shelters, have undergone extensive training to become certified support animals for veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD.

PTSD Dogs Australia CEO Angie Weeks said these dogs have made remarkable achievements and a positive impact on their handlers’ lives.

“Our dogs have come from such varying circumstances, and they have graduated from their training with flying colours. They have now been placed with a handler and I am so proud of our dogs and handlers for their achievements; they are truly inspirational.

“We wanted to take the time to celebrate their success and also to thank our volunteers, foster carers, sponsors and supporters for all the work they have done,” Angie said.

Patron of PTSD Dogs and special guest speaker, Llew O’Brien MP, spoke of his expe-

New photo competition for garden lovers

Handler Laurie Cattanach said his dog Buddy has helped him with his disability, chronic pain and anger issues.

“When I left the army my body was buggered and my brain was buggered and I was angry all the time.

“I met Angie at Eumundi Markets and when Buddy became available, from day one he has learnt to help me with my disability and chronic pain. He helped stabilise me – I was just less angry because I had someone with me all the time.

“You don’t want to give emotion to someone who is angry all the time, so my relationship

Shaun said the experience has been life changing.

“Blaze is amazing and does everything for me and he has allowedenabled me to go to the shops and I’ll leave the house and travel.

“I can’t put into words how amazing this experience has been for me. The dog is amazing, but it is also being part of the pack and everyone else in here – you draw inspiration from them,” Shaun said.

PTSD Dogs Australia relies heavily on volunteers and is funded entirely by donations, sponsorships, and grants. To support their work, visit ptsddogs.org.au.

An example of photo style for entries.

THE Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens have come up with a new competition for garden lovers – a chance for their photo to be included in a calendar for 2024 which will go on sale and credit the work of each entry.

Visitors to the gardens can capture a special shot and send it to events@ noosabotanicgardensfriends.com before 15 August to be considered for inclusion.

Photos should not feature people and must be in JPG or TIF format and landscape style.

Winners will be advised in September.

For enquiries about the competition phone Jill on 0412 053 281.

but much more than that and the unique fellowship we share, we are part of the world of Rotary who do amazing things throughout the world such as supporting refugees in Ukraine and throughout the world. Rotary is also there ready with diplomatic and peace initiatives when the opportunity arises.”

Chris said some of his plans for the coming year include building on the activities started, with assisting parking at Eumundi as well as partnering with Nambour Rotary Club assisting with catering for the various Nambour Showground events.

I hope to progress that in the coming year.

“We have also effectively reached out to other local Rotary clubs such as Nambour to combine our resources, and look forward to expanding on that approach in the future for the benefit of our communities, but as always we will have fun while we do it,” Chris said.

tion of 30 years of Rotary Club of Cooroy, outgoing president Andrew presented three awards for outstanding service.

THE Rotary Club of Cooroy recently celebrated the annual passing of the President’s Charter as well as 30 years of supporting the Cooroy and District community.

Rotary Club of Cooroy members were joined by distinguished guests including State Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton, State Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton and Noosa Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie for the

event at Cooroy RSL Club on 26 June.

Outgoing president Andrew Aves said it has been an honour to lead the club for the past 12 months.

“Over the past 30 years, the Rotary Club of Cooroy has enjoyed great fellowship while raising thousands of dollars and helping people less fortunate, locally, regionally and nationally, and contributing to projects to make our world a better

place to live, work and play.

“It has been an honour to lead the club for the past 12 months and I am looking forward to another great year of Rotary with new president Chris Durie.”

On accepting the charter and responsibility of the office, Chris said he has been a Rotarian for a long time.

“I would like to tell why I am still a part of this wonderful organisation. There is service to the community,

“We are changing and adapting as a club and we will probably have to move away from staging the annual Spring Festival next year due to conservation considerations, which will have an impact on fundraising.

“Cooroy Rotary has had challenges before and has risen to the occasion. I have some ideas in mind to put to our club to develop a combined project using the resources of the area clubs now that we work so effectively together, and with the club’s involvement,

Chris said a unique collaboration with other area clubs makes the district a better and safer place through Rotary Youth Driver Awareness, and more recently, the Rotary 4 Mental Health Initiatives which aim to reduce the alarming incidence of suicide in the Noosa District.

“In this unique collaboration we are bringing expertise and influence to try to normalise discussion on mental health by making it normal to be able to speak up and reach out to people when they are struggling to cope.

“I would also like to acknowledge the assistance given by Noosa Council and in particular the amazing support of Sandy Bolton and her team on our Mental Health initiatives.”

During the event, which also included the celebra-

Joan Alexander received the Reg and Una Bryant Award for outstanding community service, David Cramb received the Col Stevens Award for outstanding Rotary service, and the very prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award was presented to past president David Bell.

The District Governor’s representative Eric Wood presented the Club Charter, and Rotary member and treasurer David Cramb shared the interesting history of Rotary.

Other guests included several honorary members and past presidents Bette Roach and Eddie Rykenburg, as well as Lance Crowe, Tracy Riddell and Frank Hiscock who joined representatives of the three Noosa clubs and the Eumundi Rotary club, and area director Greig Lee-Archer, partners and other guests. Cooroy Rotary is part of a worldwide network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling humanitarian challenges locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

Tewantin Noosa Garden Club

THE next meeting of the Tewantin Noosa Garden Club will be held on Monday 14 August at Tinbeerwah Hall Sunrise Road 1 pm for a 1.30 pm start.

There are coffee mornings, a book club and a walking group. To ensure a warm welcome, please phone Chris on 5442 7397 or visit our website probustewantinnoosa.au.

THE Noosa Pet Parade made a paw-some return for its second year, bringing joy and excitement to Arcare Noosa residents.

The event kicked off with a delightful ‘Dog Walk’ followed by a heartwarming ‘Puppy Hour’ filled with drinks and treats.

Held on Tuesday 27 June at Arcare Noosa, the pet parade featured 12 dogs ranging from six months old to 16 years.

Each pooch received a special participation cer-

tificate crafted by resident Carolyn and a delicious bag of peanut butter and honey dog treats, also made by residents Carolyn, Sandy, Marion, Barbara, Kaye, Shirley, Jeanette, Anne, and Betty.

Science suggests pet therapy has many benefits for elderly people and the annual Noosa Pet Parade provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to experience the joy and companionship that pets bring.

NATALIE Frost from the Queensland Conservation Council will speak at the Noosa Parks Association’s (NPA) Friday Environment Forum on 28 July.

Natalie will speak on how deforestation in Queensland is out of control, with the latest data showing that more than 400,000 hectares of vegetation were lost in just one year alone and over 2 million hectares were lost in the past five years.

The Queensland Conservation Council has joined the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Wilderness Society and WWF-Australia to form the Queensland Forests Alliance with a bold vision to protect 100 million hectares of natural forest and woodlands, protect our

climate by removing hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon pollution from our atmosphere, and protect our forests and woodlands by ensuring 100 per cent of Queensland beef is farmed responsibly. Then on 11 August, Alan Franks, who has spent 23 years researching the needs and habits of hollow-dependent fauna, will speak about acquiring his knowledge of these animals and the work he has done as a spotter catcher, author and creator of nest boxes.

The forum at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville starts at 10:30 am and morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Entry is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door and includes morning tea/coffee.

The guest speakers are Ken and Robin Scott from Sunshine Coast Tropical Ferns and Foliage. They will speak on plants and propagation. Plant sales, competition table, raffles and afternoon tea. Guests welcome. Make new friends. For more info contact Len 0417604889.

Expo to unlock a world of wellness

THE Hinterland Health Expo is back.

After a successful event last year, this year’s expo is shaping up to be even bigger and better.

The expo is being organised by LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy, and owner and pharmacist Jacqueline Meyer said the free, four-hour expo will unite the community with healthcare professionals for free, accessible care.

“This year, the aim of the Hinterland Health Expo is to educate our community,

provide access to quality healthcare, showcase healthcare services, and facilitate collaboration and innovation within the healthcare sector, ultimately contributing to the overall health and well-being of our community.

“After taking into account the feedback that we received from last year, we are hosting this year’s event from 3 to 7 pm, making it more accessible for the wider community.”

Last year the expo, held at the Cooroy Memorial Hall,

featured over 30 healthcare providers from all sectors of the health and wellness industry offering a variety of healthcare advice, tests, screenings and services. It was attended by more than 200 people.

This year’s expo will be held on Thursday 31 August at Cooroy Memorial Hall. “Ignite a healthier lifestyle at the Hinterland Health Expo. Transform your well-being by registering your and your loved ones’ attendance,” Jacqueline said.

Runners dominate ‘gruelling’ cross-country course

RENOWNED Victoria runner Michael Kernahan claimed victory at the prestigious Cooroy Mountain Park Run, showcasing his exceptional talent and endurance on the challenging 10 km cross-country course.

Cooroy Mountain Park Run organiser Andy Town said Michael made the tough course look deceptively easy despite gruelling climbs and rugged terrain.

“Michael completed the course in an outstanding time of 35:35. He was chased home by Billy Curtis who finished second in a time of 37:21, and in third place was Phillip Bradshaw in 38:11,” Andy said.

Michael is currently ranked among the top 15 in Australia for the 10 km category in 2022, with a personal best of 29:50.

“Michael is a great cross-country, track and road runner most renowned for currently having the most STRAVA course records of anyone in the world, with a tally of over 1600 course records.

“Because of this, he is known as the STRAVA king,” Andy said.

In the women’s division, Amy Nicole Bennett showed “impressive form and a clean set of heels” to comfortably win with a time of 50:9.

“Amy was a couple of min-

utes ahead of distinguished Kiwi ultra runner Carol Robertson who stopped the clock at 52:13 to finish in second place, with Paige Boyd finishing very strongly to take out third position in a time of 55:36,” Andy said.

The Cooroy Mountain Park Run attracted a field of 80 runners plus supporters.

Andy said he was delighted with these numbers for just the second year of the event.

“Special thanks to Stuart Moody and his team at Cooroy Mountain Park for their continued support and for allowing the event to take place on their magnificent property,” Andy said.

Monthly market wrap up

IN wrapping up the financial year, we’ve certainly seen a few twists and turns in the Australian property market.

Eliza Owen, head of residential research at CoreLogic RP Data, shared that Australian home values have faced a decline of 5.3 per cent over the past year. However, with national home values rising 2.8 per cent in the June quarter – the highest

quarterly movement since January 2022 – we’re witnessing an encouraging shift.

A slight dip in the market hasn’t dampened enthusiasm: CoreLogic recorded 35,523 national sales in June. While this is down from the five-year June average of 39,180, it’s a promising sign of stabilisation after the high volumes we saw in 2021.

In our own backyard, Hinternoosa has experienced similar trends, with 40 percent

fewer properties hitting the market in 2022/23 compared to 2021/22. Yet our recent appraisals hint at a surge of new listings come Spring, potentially creating a more competitive market. Our advice to potential sellers? Strike while the iron’s hot and launch your campaign as soon as possible to seize current market opportunities.

Year on year, Hinternoosa’s average days on market increased by 40 per cent to 81 days,

still maintaining a strong position below our region’s average. Our average sale price dipped by 3.2 per cent, yet still outperformed the national trend

Recent high points have included exceptional sales outcomes by our team, like the pre-market sale at 104 Maple St, Cooroy, and the swift sale of 7 Oak St, Cooroy.

We’ve also seen renewed interest in slightly longer listed properties, including the sale of 5 Martha Lane, Verrierdale, and 10 Kamala

Dr, Lake Macdonald. Despite market fluctuations, our Hinternoosa clients benefit from our wealth of experience, solid advice, proactive strategies and extensive network of buyers. If you’re considering navigating the current market, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Studio, Pomona, saved the day with her stunning and energy-filled paintings.”

Connie said, with a bit of begging, Tia agreed to lend several beautiful pieces to display at the property for a few weeks.

“You truly cannot see just how captivating they are, so please come along to the next open home or pop into This Bird and view her stunning artwork for yourself.”

Tia said working with Connie to bring extra life to this home, with its “gorgeous big walls”, was such a fun project.

COUNTRYSIDE Noosa Realty property stylist Connie Gore and Pomona’s This Bird artist Tia Carrigan have teamed up to bring art and style to a property for sale.

Connie said when she took on the job to style 146 Ferrells Road, Cooroy, she knew it was going to be special.

“Stepping inside I found a home that had seen many happy years, with memorabilia on every wall and piece of furniture.

“After the family collected the items they wanted, it left the once full home feeling a bit empty, especially when

the walls were no longer holding the art that once hung so proudly.”

Connie said this was when her task to “highlight this beautiful home in its best light” became that little bit tougher.

“I needed to inject energy along with complementary soft furnishings to the remaining furniture, and to be honest, there was no way I was going to be able to do justice to the magnificent high walls without some help.

“This is where Tia from This Bird Florist & Creative

“It truly does show the power of colour in transforming a space and how art can inject wonderful personality into a home,” Tia said.

Connie said this story is a good example of just how important art is and how it can transform a house and bring life into a space that otherwise would feel empty.

“For the love of all that is stylish, invest in art. It’s not only a joy to behold on your walls but worth every penny when it comes time to sell your home.”
