Cooroy comes alive to celebrate Christmas

BY ALEX PURCELL

COOROY came alive to celebrate Christmas at the annual Christmas in Cooroy event. It is believed close to 10,000 people attended the community celebration, organised by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce (CCC), on 9 December. CCC president Sirah Robb said it was the biggest crowd they've ever seen at Christmas in Cooroy. "I've spoken to many who said they've never seen so many people."

Sirah said all the food traders, shop owners, stalls, attractions and performers were well-received and supported. "We had more food retailers and a lot more shops doing late-night trading this year and all I've spoken with so far have said they were flat out all night. "New attractions such as the climbing wall and boxing showcase were really popular. "The special constable awards for well-behaved kids was a huge hit as well – the police did a great job.”

Sirah said there were lots of contestants in all the competitions vying for substantial prizes and prize money put up by local businesses. "The Jingle Joggers Jaunt around Cooroy competition did really well and I see it becoming even more popular next year now everyone has a taste of what it is. It was like the Amazing Race but Christmas-themed and around Cooroy. "Mayor Clare Stewart was there to start the race and present prizes to the winners.

"Kids in the bike decorating competition put in lots of effort to win prizes, and it was great to see the Santas running up the street. This year's winner won the title for the second year in a row." Santa arrived in local car enthusiast Alan Kenzler's classic Holden FE and was in hot demand. "Families were lining up all night for a photo with Santa and loved their free show bag with so many goodies from local businesses," Sirah said. The Cooroy Butter Factory

Art Centre's (BFAC) Christmas Party and markets were also hugely popular. BFAC gallery coordinator Kevin Wilson said the markets, food stalls and live music were all packed. "Thousands of people poured through and around the butter factory to enjoy the art in the gallery and market stalls. "While the Santas raced up the main street, five potters went head-to-head in the studio in a race to make a teapot in the annual pottery throw down.” Sirah said it was a magical

night to remember. "I was honoured to lead such a dedicated team of volunteers who worked over six months prepping to bring it all together. It's such a big job to put on an event of this scale. They all deserve to be incredibly proud of the event they delivered to our community. "To see everyone come together having fun and enjoying the night was so rewarding for us all."
