Hinterland wearing purple for domestic violence
BY VANESSA HALLTHE HINTERLAND is being asked to wear the colour purple each Friday in an effort to stand up to domestic and family violence (DFV), with the initiative spearheaded by the local Rotary clubs.
Following on from the success of the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence initiative by the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Rich-
mond, the combined Rotary clubs of Noosa, Cooroy and Eumundi have launched a similar initiative in the hinterland, with staff of businesses such as the Community Bank Cooroy already proudly wearing their purple shirts each Friday.
Around five years ago, the then president of the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond, Dave Harman, lost a dear friend to domestic violence. Dave was
motivated by the tragedy and from that decided it was time to take a stand against DFV. In 2019 he convinced his club to adopt DFV as its principal focus.
The club had a very distinctive purple shirt designed that had two messages emblazoned on it.
On the front it says ‘Together we say NO to Domestic and Family Violence’, and on the back, it reinforces that message by saying ‘YES to respectful relationships’.
Cooroy Rotary president Chris Durie said that the success of the program in Ballina had been overwhelmingly positive.
“This is about long-term and lasting change, and it is one initiative that is proven to work.
“I encourage everyone in Cooroy to follow the lead of the Community Bank Cooroy – and now the Cooroy Hotel and Cooroy RSL – to proudly wear the shirt every Friday and reduce this scourge on our society.”
Be Seen With an Award Winning Agency
Eumundi Rotarian Tex Pipke reinforced the importance of the purple shirts.
“On any Friday in Ballina now, you will be confronted by a sea of purple shirts spreading the message – and it is working. The local police have reported that the time they spend on domestic violence issues has more than halved since the initiative started.

Chainsaw artist Shane Christensen sculpts impressive works of art
A LOVE of the environment, First Nations culture, and a deep respect for the natural world and looking after it for future generations are the key messages that are carved into the sculptures by Doonan ‘chainsaw sculptor’ Shane Christensen. Despite using heavy and fierce machinery for his art, Shane’s sculptures speak of the immense beauty and need to preserve the natural world – they are emotive art pieces that capture the beauty of the land and nature and ask the observer to nurture that which they are seeing for the future.
“I used to talk at schools and educate students about ecosystems and their relationships, and I found some students could soak up that hard data and some kids responded better to actual objects.”
At the essence of
Shane’s work is relationships – those within ecosystems and those which connect with the land via First Nations culture – and mentors from Shane’s life brought out his talents.
“I was born creative and artistic and I put it on the shelf for many years, and then after high school a friend of the family took me under his wing and he showed me some carving techniques and I just watched and learnt.”
Shane grew up around power tools via his dad.
“My dad was a builder, and I moved into conservation and forestry with native timbers so my art kind of evolved from that.”
Shane’s tools of the trade are chainsaws, and details are added in with power tools.
“My first piece with a Dremel was at 17 with a piece of mango wood and
it was a fish, and I always tell people if they are wanting to carve to start with a fish.
“The fish is quite two dimensional but then you can explore it further by making it three dimensional.”
Shane said that he was really able to hone his sculpting skills via making boomerangs and it was another mentor who showed him what to do.
“Another inspiring friend of the family who is an Indigenous Elder took me out to make boomerangs and he raised his whole family with woodwork and taught me the intricacies of working with the grain.”
“For the boomerang to be strong and not break, it has to work with the grain. If it’s not working with the grain then it will just break so I have incorporated that knowledge into my work
and I really spend time getting to know the wood … in a way I’m collaborating with the tree.”
Wood is sourced organically and never chopped down, with local tallowwood a favourite.
Shane’s pieces take about a week to make with planning and then the actual sculpting, with his biggest piece weighing 365 kg which was a piece made for Griffith University.
“My work in essence is to create a relationship with this land and I’m not the first person to do that.
“There’s already been thousands of years of culture here and all of this art is about caring for the country and helping us to connect with that.”
Shane’s work can be viewed via his socials at Instagram @shane.artisan and Facebook ‘Shane Christensen’.
Continued from page 1. “Attitudes change over time and just like it is no longer acceptable to drink and drive, DFV will eventually no longer be accepted in any area of the community.”
“The community bank on the coast has been really supportive of victims of domestic and family violence and we are also hoping to drive this nationally through our branches.
“When we wear the shirts each Friday we get lots of positive comments from our customers. They are bright and vibrant, and they tie in well with our other initiatives such as supporting DV Safe Phone, and sadly we see the effects of domestic violence as we deal with victims in regard to financial control, so it makes a lot of sense to support this.”
One of the first businesses to take up the initiative was the Community Bank Cooroy, with Cooroy manager Steve stating it was a “no brainer” for them to support.
Championing the efforts from the Community Bank Cooroy, Chris Durie said it was great to see them take on the call so quickly.
“Steve has been amazing, and they have been wearing these shirts now for about six weeks and we are hoping to get this across all of the coast asap,” Chris said.
The message is clear: that it is time to say no to domestic and family violence and wear purple each
Friday
“If you think it is not happening locally then you are wrong.
“Wearing the purple shirts is about getting people to talk and being aware of what is going on. If people see attitudes and a different message then the attitudes around this subject will change.”
The Rotary-designed purple shirts can be bought online from www. nationalworkwear.com.au/ collections/rotary-collection and both businesses and individuals are encouraged to take up the initiative. For more information on the program, please email Cooroy Rotary: president@ cooroyrotary.org.au

Future of Botanic Gardens set to be evaluated with new master plan
GRACING the shores of Lake Macdonald, Noosa Botanic Gardens first opened in 1990 and has become a much-loved destination for locals and visitors who enjoy walks, picnics, photography and horticulture.
Looking towards the future, Noosa Council will develop a new master plan which will help guide future improvements to Noosa’s much-loved botanic gardens.
Council appointed a stakeholder reference group at its most recent Ordinary Meeting to assist in developing the new plan.
Mayor Frank Wilkie stated this was the first step in planning.
“We are in the very early stages, and we look forward to consulting our community in the months ahead with a range of opportunities planned,” Mayor Wilkie said. The reference group includes representatives from key community groups
and other organisations. They include Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens, Seqwater, Noosa Hinterland Residents Association, Cooroy Area Ratepayers Association, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Future Group, Outdoors Queensland and Tourism Noosa.
Councillors Jessica Phillips (chair), Karen Finzel and Amelia Lorentson have also been appointed to the reference group.
Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Shaun Walsh said community members have volunteered much time and energy over many years in a very successful collaboration with Noosa Council to maintain the gardens.
“After 30 years the time is right for us to develop this new masterplan and so we’re excited to continue that collaboration to guide the future of this muchloved asset.
“We will continue to work

alongside our local Kabi Kabi and Jinibara First Nations people in an exchange of ideas for enriching the culture of the gardens.”
Longevity of the gardens is paramount, with council stating that the gardens will remain an inclusive, connected, and vibrant place for the community to share.
Mr Walsh further stated that the master plan process will consider the evolving needs and interests of residents across the shire.
The gardens offer a variety of activities including scenic and guided walks, picnic and barbecue facilities, and specialised garden areas.
The public can also hire sections of the gardens as well as the amphitheatre. These have been used for many concerts, weddings and other events.

Caution urged as metal spikes found on Mt Tinbeerwah trails
THE QUEENSLAND Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has increased patrols in Tewantin National Park after multiple metal spikes were found by mountain bikers and rangers near popular trails in late April.
The large metal spikes were lodged in the trails with the sharp end pointing up and were clearly placed with intent to cause harm and injury.
QPWS ranger John McQueeney said the presence of such potentially harmful objects was deeply concerning.
“This is the first time we have received a report of this type of malicious activity
in the area,” ranger McQueeney said.
“Everyone deserves to have a safe, enjoyable experience in our national parks and any attempt to damage property or hurt visitors or wildlife is unacceptable.”
A total of 13 metal spikes, each about 18 cm long, have been removed from trails near Old Tewantin Road since they were first discovered.
QPWS rangers were alerted to the dangerous objects by a local mountain biking club who removed eight spikes from the area.
Rangers carried out multiple sweeps of the trails
using a metal detector to locate any remaining spikes, removing a further five spikes from the area. Rangers are working with the Queensland Police Service and will carry out additional checks of the park while increasing patrols of the area.
Mountain bikers and visitors are urged to be vigilant of all hazards and report any dangerous objects to QPWS immediately on 1300 130 372.
Mountain bikers are reminded to stay on designated paths, always wear safety gear, and check the QPWS Park Alerts page before starting their journey.

Beat winter bugs ahead of time with free flu vax
IN AN effort to keep Queenslanders fit,
and free of the dreaded
free flu shots are available now, which is the perfect time to get one in preparation for the upcoming winter flu season. Getting vaccinated ahead of the flu season is important for protecting yourself and your loved ones from the flu and its complications.
All Queensland residents over the age of six months are eligible to receive the
Cooroora
free vaccine from vaccination providers including GPs and pharmacies, and bookings are now open. Close to one million people received a flu vaccination during free programs in 2022 and 2023. The state government is continuing this tradition and is backing free flu vaccinations in 2024 as part of a $40 million commitment to ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.
From 1 January to 24 March, there have been
more than 7,000 flu cases reported, with 713 people admitted to hospital. Make no mistake, influenza can be incredibly dangerous.
The peak season for influenza varies from year to year, but typically starts in May and lasts until around October, with most cases typically recorded in August.
Queenslanders are encouraged to consider vaccination ahead of the peak season to ensure
coverage over the winter months.
The influenza vaccine can be co-administered with a COVID-19 booster dose.
The Premier stated that the common flu can be fatal: “While it might seem like the common cold, influenza can be deadly which is why it’s so important to get a flu shot every single year.”
To get your free flu shot, visit your nearest pharmacy or GP.
Northbound roadworks to begin late May along Bruce Highway
THE DEPARTMENT of Transport and Main Roads has advised of upcoming works to stabilise a short section of the embankment that runs parallel to the Bruce Highway, which will improve the stability of the roadside batter slope and reduce the likelihood of landslips.
Key works include
strengthening of the embankment, replacing a damaged guardrail, removing debris from concrete drainage channels, and minor vegetation clearing. The works are scheduled to begin late May and will take up to three months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting, with the majority of the
works undertaken during the day, Monday to Friday from 6 am to 6 pm.
There will be occasional night and weekend works and motorists may experience delays when lane closures are in place.
All traffic protocols will be in place such as signage to advise of the works.

YOUR NOOSA
POMONA TO CONSIDER ACTION
Residents of Pomona are gearing up for the next stage of the Pomona Placemaking Pilot Program, aimed at enhancing the unique character of their much-loved hinterland community.
Running for four weeks from May 13 until June 10, this stage will focus on the community’s priorities.
“This is an important part of our engagement with the community. We’re keen to make sure that community perspectives on what defines Pomona’s unique identity and character have been heard. Residents and businesses now have the opportunity to identify the key initiatives that should be prioritised to maintain this,” Director of Strategy and Environment, Kim Rawlings said.
The Pomona community is invited to complete a short online survey at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au or drop into a pop-up and chat with a member of the project team on Friday, May 31 from 3pm to 5pm at Joe Bazzo Park, or on Saturday, June 1, from 8am to 10:30am at the Pomona Markets.
YUROL TRAIL UPGRADE TO DELIVER GREATER CONNECTIVITY
Enhancements will support ecological preservation and boost the trail’s effectiveness as a fire break.
The Yurol Trail upgrade project is currently in full swing, promising exciting improvements to enrich visitors’ experience and help preserve the natural environment.
Referred to as Trail 7, this pathway connects Lake Macdonald and Pomona through picturesque natural landscapes.
Shaun Walsh, Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, said Council’s aim with the upgrade was to enhance trail connectivity but also to strengthen our relationship with nature and bolster the trail’s effectiveness as a fire break.
“The ongoing enhancements include upgrading creek crossings, realigning trail
sections, and installing new signage, all of which are part of the broader Noosa Biosphere Trails Masterplan focused on sustainable trail development and ecological preservation,” he explained.
Mr Walsh said the project was a collaborative effort involving Sunshine Civil Solutions, Trailworks, National Parks, and the Kabi Kabi community, all
playing pivotal roles.
Funding for this initiative includes contributions from Noosa Council and joint support from the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. The works are expected to be completed by mid-June 2024.
DOGGY BEACH WORK PROGRESSING
Efforts to safeguard and rejuvenate Doggy Beach are making significant strides, with the second phase of the sand nourishment project now underway.
Shaun Walsh, Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, said the project was helping fortify the shoreline.
“We’re pleased to announce that the sand dredging in the middle of the Noosa River channel is progressing well,” he said.
“Phase 1 of this crucial dredging effort has successfully reopened the river’s central navigation route, diverting boats away from Doggy Beach to mitigate further erosion.”
Phase 2 involves construction
of sand plugs at both ends of Doggy Beach to redirect river flow and bolster erosion control. Consequently, access along Doggy Beach is now closed to mariners.
Mr Walsh said safety was paramount during the current work, with boaties reminded to exercise caution when navigating the river mouth and urged to consider their vessels’ limitations and the tidal conditions.
“Boat operators are urged to maintain a safe distance from the dredge and pipeline,” he said.
“Yellow hazard buoys, positioned 20 metres from the dredging operation, indicate boundaries of areas that should
be avoided,” Mr Walsh said.
“We encourage passing mariners to communicate with the dredge operator on Channel 16 for assistance with safe passage,” he added.
Scheduled for completion by the end of September, the final phase of these works will involve beach renourishment, including the removal of fallen trees and more than 160,000 tonnes of sand deposited to replenish this beloved beach, restoring its natural beauty and resilience for the community to once again enjoy.
For more details, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions factsheet available on the Council’s website under the ‘Works in Progress’ section.

Claptomaniacs return to Cooroy RSL
IN WELCOME news, crowd favourites The Claptomaniacs will be playing for one night at Cooroy RSL after what has been far too long.
The Noosa Shire band have not graced the Cooroy RSL stage in one year and they are thrilled to announce that they will be bringing their classy act back on Saturday June 8, from 7 to 10 pm.
If your music tastes run to classic transatlantic songs from the late 60s to late 80s – think Doobie Brothers, Joe Cocker, Beatles, Steve
Miller Band, Steely Dan, Huey Lewis & the News, The Hollies, Traveling Wilburys, Eric Clapton and many more – then this show is for you!
The guys have added a few new songs since last time, but all the core favourites are still in the mix – and as always, lead singer and local resident Ken Gamble will amaze with his ability to croon Roy Orbison one minute, then dig deep into the grit with Joe Cocker the next.
Ken is ably backed by
David Zuric (guitar/vocals), Jonathan May (keyboards/ vocals), Jon Brown (bass/ vocals), and Alan Lander (drums/vocals). The Claptomaniacs are considered one of the top shelf cover bands on the Coast with their tight, authentic renditions of complex songs. It's always a busy night so the advice is to book a table quickly to avoid disappointment. Call 5447 6131 for bookings. Entry is free. More info: www.facebook/ claptomaniacs
Migrate to Cooroy Library rooftop for free movie
IT'S TIME to make like a bird and once again enjoy the view from ‘up there’ as the ever-popular cinema on the roof returns to the Cooroy Library on Saturday
June 1 for a free screening of the animated film ‘Migration’.
Migration is a 2023 animated adventure comedy film which sees a family of
ducks leaving their home in northern America for an adventurous trip to Jamaica. The birds however end up in New York City where they meet new friends, have some interesting experiences, and accomplish more than they ever thought they could.
Bring your family, a blanket and a picnic, and enjoy the movie under the stars. It wouldn’t be the movies without snacks and there will be soft drinks and freshly cooked popcorn available to purchase.
Patrons are strongly advised to arrive before dark in order to find a spot on the lawn while there is still daylight.
Cinema on the roof will run from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday June 1 atop the Cooroy Library at 9 Maple street. Admission is by donation and no bookings are required. The cinema on the roof is made possible thanks to the Cooroy Future Group (the people who bring you the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre) working in partnership with Noosa Libraries and with the assistance of some generous sponsors.
Community to come together for festival Mary Valley Art Festival calls for entries
THE MARY Valley Art Festival, which will run July 25–28, is calling on the community for submissions, with entries open until July 8.
Cooroy custom framing business Frame Tree is delighted to be a new sponsor for the annual event, and is encouraging people to support the festival.
"We are thrilled to be a sponsor in this year’s Mary Valley Art Festival as there is always such amazing artwork coming out of the area.”
Owner Belinda Richardson has generously donated a $500 prize which will go to the winner of the drawing
category, one of 10 sections in the show being held at the Imbil Public Hall.
With more than 20 years’ experience in design and visual arts, Belinda said the quality of entries at the festival was always outstanding and they were happy to support artists.
"We like to nurture and support new talent and encourage all emerging and established artists to enter."
Belinda has had a varied career in the arts, working as a graphic designer for 15 years at the Illawarra Mercury before moving to the Sunshine Coast with her young family, where she studied a Diploma in
Visual Arts and trained to be a trade-qualified picture framer.
With businesses such as Frame Tree supporting the festival, the new sponsorship program means the prize pool this year is a huge $11,500 which includes the RJR Property Best in Show Award for $3,000, and $1,500 for the Open Winner from Gympie’s Bendigo Bank.
Transport company
Masondale has sponsored the $1,000 People’s Choice Award and a total of $350 is up for grabs in the youth section.
The 2024 Mary Valley Art Festival will open for viewing from July 25 from 10 am to 4 pm daily until July 28, with the gala awards presentation on Friday July 26 from 6 pm.
The festival gala will also have music, licensed bar and finger food as award winners are announced.
Entries will close on July 8. Terms and conditions, as well as more information, available online at www. maryvalleyartfestival.com.au
THE NOOSAVILLE Lions Park on Gympie Terrace will be a celebration of community over the weekend of June 8–9 with the return of the Noosa Come Together Festival which is put on by Events4GreaterGood.
The festival will be hosting two days of live music, food, entertainment, and community spirit, and the organisers are proud to be able to offer an enjoyable weekend of family-friendly entertainment at an affordable price.
The festival will have a vast selection of entertainment – with a busking com-
petition, three live stages, sailing classes, a field full of affordable kids’ activities, food stalls and a huge laser show.
The festival organisers have made affordability a key component of the festival, and they are also celebrating local identities with stages named after local legends from the Noosa region.
The ‘Mark Davidson’ stage recognises the local legend who was known for his infectious smile and inspiring spirit despite his battle with haemophilia and HIV.
Mark's legacy serves as a reminder of the strength and positivity that is so prevalent in the Noosa community.
Sponsored by Bryant Building Contractors, the ‘Betty Wallace’ stage will be showcasing youth events and is in honour of the namesake behind Noosa’s famous Betty’s Burgers which became a food icon on Hastings Street. Betty’s famous $1 burgers kept generations of Noosa kids fed throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and her legacy continues to inspire the youth-focused programming at the festival.
The ‘Yacht Club’ stage is named after Troy Biss, a long-time Noosa local and supporter of the Noosa Come Together Festival. This stage is sponsored by Brendan Weatherill of Property Providore, a close friend of Troy's. It represents the strong ties and support within the Noosa community.

Community House to host Volunteer Fair for Noosa Hinterland Music to play on first Sunday at botanic gardens
THE WEATHER gods have played havoc with outdoor events of late and the first Sunday of the month music events at Noosa Botanic Gardens will be going ahead on Sunday June 2 after too many rain interruptions.
After the last two washouts, many fingers are crossed that the next event will actually go ahead.
Anyone who has attended one of these Sunday morning get-togethers knows how enjoyable they are – with guided walks, music, and coffee on offer within the grounds of the stunningly beautiful Noosa Botanic Gardens on Lake Macdonald.
First up from 8:30 am will be a guided walk through the most interesting parts of the garden due to seasonal activity, and from 9 am there will be the opening of the exotic shade garden – and coffee will be available.
The morning is also about enjoying music, and local musician Jay Bishoff and friends will be playing their laid-back grooves from under the poincianas from 10 am to midday. Bring along a chair and enjoy the music in a truly sublime setting. If the weather is nice, patrons are encouraged to stay and enjoy a picnic at one of the many tables lo-
cated across the eight-hectare gardens.
The morning is free; however a small donation is always welcomed and will go towards care of the gardens.
All of this will be taking place on Sunday June 2 and with the weather sometimes not playing nice, organisers strongly encourage attendees to check on Facebook prior to ensure the morning is going ahead. Facebook/Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends Noosa Botanic Gardens are located on Lake Macdonald Drive, about 4 km from Cooroy.
CHANCES are you have come across a volunteer, and with National Volunteer Week running from May 20–26 why not take the opportunity to give back and volunteer with one of the many local organisations who rely on volunteers.

The fair will be a great way for the community to connect and for attendees to discover the vast number of community groups
located in the local region who are always in need of volunteers.
Local groups, clubs, and not-for-profit organisations will be represented, and whether you’re passionate about the environment, arts and culture, community support, or sports, there's a volunteer opportunity for you!
Discover how your skills and interests can make a difference and find flexible volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule and lifestyle. Enjoy a chai, cuppa and tasty treat while listening to a range of short talks on opportunities to help out in the community.
The morning will also have a range of activities on offer, including playful movement and craft, and free tub plants thanks to Noosa Council.
Social inclusion is extremely important, and the fair is a perfect avenue to discover how you can be a part of building a stronger,
more vibrant community in the Noosa hinterland.
The morning will also be an opportunity for attendees to discover what’s on offer at the PCH.

Green thumbs celebrate with bling and white for 60th
IT WAS a day to celebrate on Monday May 13 with the Tewantin Noosa Garden Club celebrating their 60th birthday with a special lunch at the Tewantin Anglican Church.
The members were asked to dress in white or bling and celebrated their club’s milestone birthday with a guest speaker from the Brisbane Botanic Gardens addressing the group and then it was time for lunch with drinks and cake. The group also had tables set up of prize-winning flowers on display and the lunch tables were beautifully dressed.
The club started in 1964 and over the years has had participants involved in numerous flower shows and they have contributed to local deb balls, and regularly cooperated with Noosa Council and their street plantings in areas such as Swift Park Cooroy.
Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at Tinbeerwah Hall from 1.30pm and the group has regular guest speakers, competitions, excursions and afternoon tea is always provided on meeting days. New members are always welcome, and the only requirement is a love of plants and/or gardening. For more information please visit - www.tewantinnoosa gardenclub.com
Pocket-sized kindness waiting around town
KEEP your eye out for some special little friends in the community! The Kindness Club’s latest project is ‘Pocket Pals’.
The children from The Kindness Club have been busy making beaded keyrings which have been painted with sweet little faces and adorned with the names of the child who made the pocket pal, and they have been placed around Cooroy.
The Pocket Pals are loaded up with love from The Kindness Club and packaged with a special note which reads: Clip me
to your bag or keys. And if things get tough, as they sometimes do, reach for me and I’ll be here for you!
The children made these pocket-sized gifts with the aim of making people smile! For those who find them, The Kindness Club hopes they will serve as a little reminder that the new owner is cared for.
The children LOVE to hear from the community so if you would like to share a story of kindness, please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com and let her know all about your pocket-sized discovery.

Forever Fitter with Ange
Don’t let fitness go in the cooler months!
AS THE winter months settle in, many find it increasingly challenging to maintain their fitness routines amidst colder temperatures and shorter days.
Hailing from Tasmania, I have some great tips of my own to help you stay fit and healthy during the chilly season.
Dress appropriately:
Dressing for the occasion is key to staying comfortable and motivated. Layers are the best strategy as they allow you to start off warm and slowly remove layers
as you get warmer with exercise. Get outside: Don’t let the cold weather deter you from enjoying outdoor activities.
Waterfalls are stunning in the rain and a beach walk on a dreary day is often much less crowded than in the summer months. Getting out and exploring not only burns calories but also allows you to soak in the beauty of the winter landscape.
Try some indoor workouts: Indoor workouts are just as good as the outdoors
to keep you on track. Some local options are Impact Boxing in Cooroy, JMT in Noosa and Iron Palace in Gympie. All these gyms will provide you a positive and comfortable atmosphere to train in over winter. Prepare early: Preparing for the day ahead the night before is one of my all-time top tips for fitness. Pack your lunch, pop a spare gym kit in the boot and make sure you have a muesli bar in the glove box. This way you are removing those ‘little things’ that get in the way of you getting your workouts in.
Be kinder to yourself: Shorter days and colder weather may come as a bit of a blow to your energy levels and motivation, so make sure you care for yourself as you would a friend. Make sure you set realistic expectations for your workouts and focus on enjoying the process.
Nourish your body: Winter is a fantastic time to level-up your kitchen game. Aim for nutritious, warming foods like slow-cooked meals, soups and stews.
Dr Arash has experience working in di erent parts of Queensland. He enjoys di erent aspects of general practice and patient safety and patient care are his first priorities in his practice.
Dr Arash provides services in:
Full skin check and skin procedures
Chronic management including consideration and consult of medicinal cannabis.
Aesthetics Medicine including: Reducing Wrinkles, Enhancing Facial Anatomy , PDO mono thread (tightening and lifting of facial areas)
General check up and chronic disease management including iron infusion and venesection.
Winter is also a great time to work on meal prep skills – the simplest of which is to cook an extra portion at dinner and pack it for lunch the next day.
Prioritise rest and recovery: Winter is an excellent time to focus on rest and recovery to prevent burnout and injuries later in the year. Incorporate rest days into your workout schedule and enjoy quality sleep to allow your body to recover and repair.
I sincerely hope some of these practical tips help you to have an active and enjoyable winter. In health and fitness and in any other project the most important thing is to keep a positive mindset, a can-do attitude, and a sense of adventure. If you are struggling to achieve your health and fitness goals, feel free to reach out. I would love to help.

HOW does toothpaste work?
Toothpaste makes your mouth smell fresh and feel clean. If you brush your teeth two times a day, toothpaste also helps protect your teeth from forming holes or cavities. Let’s look at these benefits one at a time.
1. That fresh feeling
Some toothpaste ingredients mix with your spit to make a soapy sudsy foam. This foam turns into slimy slop that you spit out. Many toothpastes also have a slight sandy feeling to scrub stains off your teeth. This also helps remove the sticky, soft, white globs that grow on your teeth called plaque. Plaque is made from sticky bits of food and bacteria. The bacteria in your plaque live, grow and multiply in your mouth. Some bacteria love to digest the sugary food you eat.
2. Prevents cavities
Even worse, plaque bacteria poo out diarrhoea and that diarrhoea is acidic, meaning it can dissolve your teeth to form holes. So we brush our teeth twice a day to get rid
of as much bacteria and their diarrhoea as we can. There are lots of special ingredients in toothpastes to prevent holes from forming that include: Xylitol. When bacteria in your plaque eat this, they get constipated and poo less acid.
Fluoride. Your teeth have tiny gaps on the surface that are so small you can only see them with a microscope. Fluoride fills these gaps to make your teeth strong. This is how fluoride protects against nasty bacteria poo from dissolving your teeth. What did people use in the olden days?
People in ancient Egypt, China and India used their fingers to rub tooth powders on their teeth. The first tooth powders were made of crushed animal bones, ox hooves, and egg, snail and oyster shells. Later, people added crushed charcoal, powdered tree bark and flavouring herbs. Luckily, we now have toothpastes that leave a better taste in your mouth and stop holes forming in your teeth.
After serving the local Cooroy community for over 15 years, Arosha and Rob welcome you to Tewantin Family Dental. Working as a team, we aim to meet all your dental and denture needs under one roof. Drop-in or give us a call, we are here to help!

Demons name oval and secure funding
THE POMONA Demons AFL are going from strength to strength. They recently had two major wins with Pomona Distilling Co coming on board as a major sponsor and Noosa MP Sandy Bolton informing the club of their $218,000 funding windfall.
The two announcements were made on Saturday May 4 with Ms Bolton in attendance at the ground, and she was thrilled to join the Pomona Demons committee, volunteers, players and families to celebrate the club receiving $218,921 from the Queensland State Government Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund.
“This grant will completely replace and upgrade the
field lighting and it was an honour to support the Pomona Demons’ application.
“Congratulations to all and thank you to the Department of Tourism and Sport for acknowledging the incredible value this upgrade will bring to this sport and community.”
“It is vital to support our clubs and their endeavours. These clubs provide fitness, mateship, and so much more, including some serious fun for all ages, and it is fabulous to see our girls loving this game,” Ms Bolton said.
The addition of the new lighting will literally allow the game to be played well into the night over the weekends.
“This is an exciting time
for the Pomona Demons with future night games and a wonderful vision for our community,” Sandy said. Gold sponsor Pomona Distilling Co were also invited along on the day and the Demons were thrilled to showcase their newly named oval: ‘Pomona Distilling Co Oval – Home of the Pomona Demons’. Fiona from the Demons said it was the first time that the club has had a major sponsor and naming rights, and as such the club was rapt with the sponsorship. For more information on the Demons and when they are playing locally, please visit them on Facebook at ‘Pomona Aussie Rules Football Club’ and get down and show your support.
Nambour-Yandina
United Football celebrate completion of major works
Kandanga Katz at the QLD District Finals
FOOTBALL-loving fans and players in the hinterland have cause to celebrate, with a $1.7 million refurbishment of the ‘Home of the Reds’ which is the Nambour-Yandina United (NYU) Football Club.
The club is home to some 350 players aged 5 to 70, and with the completed refurbishments the club is enjoying a new lease of life and patronage.
Proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council, the project at the sports club facility will also be a boost for the town, with the precinct home to the popular Yandina Community Markets which the club hosts each Saturday.
NYU was formed in 1997, bringing together two great earlier clubs: the Nambour Reds (founded in 1974) and the Yandina Eagles (founded in 1976).
The $1.7 million upgrade includes new public amenities, four new changerooms, improved access for all abilities, a separate area for umpires and a first aid room, as well as new admin office and uniform store.
Sunshine Coast Council provided funding of more than $1 million and proudly partnered with the Australian Government which contributed $400,000 and the Queensland Government which provided $204,000. NYU also contributed $33,000 to support the project.
State Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said he was absolutely delighted to see these works come to completion and to have advocated for this project as the local state MP.
“With the huge increase in female participation in sports across the Coast, this upgrade could not have come at a better time,” Mr Skelton said.
“I look forward to seeing the benefits the upgraded clubhouse brings, not only to NYU Football Club but to the wider community as well.”
NYU club president Jeff McColl said the whole club was excited about their new clubhouse and facilities, which coincided with NYU’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
“We have a large supporter base and I am sure everyone will be proud of our new facilities. We look forward to hosting many Reds home games in our new clubhouse.”
IT’S been a big month of bowls with the Queensland District Finals being played on the Gold Coast at Club Helensvale. Representatives from the Kandanga Country Club which is home to the ‘Kandanga KATZ’ were there representing the club and the Mary Valley. Well done to all who competed on the Gold Coast. Million paws walk set to raise vital RSPCA funds
ONE OF the biggest fundraisers on the calendar for the RSPCA is set to take place on Sunday May 26 with the annual ‘Million Paws Walk’ which will see people across the country join forces with their pooches, all in aid of raising funds and awareness against animal cruelty.
The Noosa walk will once again take place at the Tewantin Noosa Lions Park in Noosaville (near the Yacht Club). This year the walk is turning 30 and a huge party
is planned on the day. Over the last 29 years, 750,000 people and 400,000 dogs have laced up and leashed up to make a difference. From 8:30 am to 3 pm there will be so much family friendly fun with market stalls, food stalls, entertainment, raffles, and lots and lots of doggy and pet information.
From 10 am the official walk will get underway, and the Noosa walk has arguably one of the best views with the walk flanking the
gorgeous Noosa River along Gympie Terrace. As the event is a fundraiser, tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children, $20 for concessions and a family is $55.
Last year the Million Paws Walk raised $1,379,633 and that equates to 5,474 pups being cared for. Every cent raised adds up, and for just $36 a day a dog can be loved and cared for in a shelter at the RSPCA.

Vaccinating cats against disease
AS WITH dogs, the many infectious conditions that cats are vaccinated against are largely on the decline due to the widespread uptake of immunisation programs.
In addition, the trend towards responsible confinement of cats, especially at night, has reduced the incidence of diseases transmitted through contact/ fighting.
Keeping cats from roaming also dramatically reduces the threat that cats pose to our largely nocturnal native animals.
The core components of your cat’s vaccination protocol are feline parvovi-
rus, feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus.
Feline parvovirus causes a condition known as feline enteritis, a debilitating syndrome of vomiting and diarrhoea which is often fatal in kittens.
Fortunately, vaccination is highly effective in preventing illness.
In addition, most cat vaccines include feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus, both of which contribute to what is commonly referred to as ‘cat flu’.
Infected cats generally show a combination of conjunctivitis, nasal infection and sometimes oral ulcers.
Secondary bacterial infection can dramatically exacerbate these symptoms.
Although vaccinated cats can still develop clinical signs with exposure to these viruses, the severity and duration of illness is greatly reduced.
Vaccines are available for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus.
However, unless you are determined to allow your cat to range freely, it is unlikely that exposure will occur to either of these (unless another cat in the same household is infected).
Local cases of both of these conditions are infrequent and are a much bigger problem in areas with large populations of outdoor cats.
As always, your veterinarian is the best source of information for your pet’s health needs.

KIDS PAGE
Keeping children safe online
Rebecca Davies from The Digital ParentROBLOX is a popular gaming platform with children of all ages. It allows users to create and play their own games and provides a space to chat with friends while playing. Whilst the game makes for easy entertainment, many parents are unaware of the potential risks of the platform.
One of the main concerns with Roblox is that it can potentially expose children to inappropriate content and interactions. When talking about online safety with children in schools, it is common for them to say that the first time they encountered online harassment or sexual content was on Roblox, often before they were even 10 years old. Another aspect to consider is in-app purchases of the
game currency ‘Robux’. The game actively encourages users to use Robux to access additional features and items.
There are parental restrictions built into the platform that allow parents some measure of control. Parents can disable in-app purchases and restrict the chat functions; however tech-savvy kids can often find ways around these restrictions. If you decide to allow your children to use Roblox, it’s crucial to take a proactive approach to ensure their safety when using the platform:
• Use parental controls by disabling all chat features and in-app purchases.
• Regularly review their interactions within the game and their friends’ list.
• Have children use the game in a public area within your home.
• Educate your children about online safety.
• Ensure your passwords for parental controls and payment settings are unique and challenging to guess. Avoid reusing passwords across different platforms. Should your children use Roblox? That depends on your family’s risk tolerance and ability to monitor its use. While it can provide good entertainment, this must be tempered with knowledge of the very real risks it poses to children’s online safety. For more resources on how to be tech savvy with your children please visitwww.thedigitalparent.com.au
It’s so important for children and pregnant women to get vaccinated against this potentially deadly disease. The whooping cough combination vaccine is free for children aged 2 mths, 4 mths, 6 mths, 18 mths and 4 years, adolescents aged 12-13 years through school-based vaccination programs and pregnant women (ideally between 20-32 weeks).

I TOOK the opportunity while Parliament was in recess earlier this month to join the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s Cooroy Collaborates event on Maple Street.
The chamber put on a great event, with local businesses coming together to create valuable networks and connections. This gave me the chance to talk to a number of people and hear their opinions on the economy, and what they need from the government.
After the Cooroy Collaborates event, I caught up with Jacquie and the team at the local LiveLife Pharmacy.
Small businesses like Jacquie’s are the engine room of our economy. They account for a whopping 97 per cent of all business done in Australia, and many are doing it tough right now because of skyrocketing cost-of-living pressures and
energy prices.
Families, businesses, and community groups are struggling to cover their rapidly rising costs. Not-forprofit groups who rely on volunteers are finding it particularly hard to attract and keep the volunteers they need to meet the community demand for their services.
I recently announced that several regional not-for-profit groups will receive a grant from the Australian Government’s 2023–24 Volunteer Grant Program to help support their volunteers.
The Volunteer Grant Program provides funding of up to $5,000 to eligible organisations to help purchase equipment, conduct training activities, or reimburse fuel costs for volunteers.
The organisations to receive a volunteer grant in 2023–24 include the Noosa Shire Museum, Noosa District Basketball Association, Pomona District Meals on Wheels, Kandanga Cemetery Association, Friends of Amamoor Incorporated, Gympie Meals on Wheels, Gympie Pistol Club, Gympie Medical Transport, and the Widgee District Hall and Recreation Association. These grants will help these organisations to support their volunteers and their communities.
Noosa Shire CouncilIN NOOSA Shire, numerous resources and support services are available to help those in need. Unfortunately, this information is often not widely known and needs to be shared. Noosa Council maintains a comprehensive list of local organisations providing significant assistance, accessible on its social services webpage.
This list includes organisations like Making Lives Matter, Salvos Connect, Noosa COC Food Outlet and Op Shop, Youturn, St Vincent De Paul, and Pomona and District Community House. Additionally, registered local businesses can contribute food to OzHarvest, and there are opportunities for residents to engage and make a difference. I’ll continue sharing information via my Facebook page (Amelia4Noosa) and social media.
It’s important to remember that one of the most
impactful things we can do as a community is to remind people that they are not alone, especially amidst rising living costs, financial struggles, and homelessness. These challenges often arise from a complex mix of factors, including lack of affordable housing, domestic violence, low affordable rental availability, health issues, mental health concerns, and addiction.
I wish to express gratitude to organisations like the Cooroy Food Pantry, churches, volunteers, council staff, and residents who tirelessly support those in need. Their efforts extend beyond providing necessities. As Vedra Fernandez from Making Lives Matter says, “In this shop, we offer second chances, kindness, authenticity, apologies, laughter, hugs, community, and love.”
As a community, we must continue embodying this spirit and unite to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the most vulnerable. Community thrives when we collectively foster a sense of belonging.
Let’s continue reminding people they’re not alone and that resources are available to help navigate difficult times. We may unknowingly be helping someone we know.

Congratulations to all, and thank you to the Department of Tourism and Sport for acknowledging the incredible value this upgrade will bring to this sport and community. New bridge With the long-advocated-for new Six Mile Bridge #7 project now fully finished, we will have a date for the official opening shortly and I look forward to finally celebrating with everyone!
Local birthday
Learning more of our history is always appreciated, and Ron Sutton’s 90th at the Cooroy RSL was a gold mine of information. Happy Birthday, Ron, and another book needs to be written. Noosa hospital With residents raising concerns that the Noosa Hospital needs ‘saving’ as a result of media and a petition put out by a political party candidate, I can reassure everyone that this is incorrect.
As I have raised previously, it is the slowness of the emergency department expansion due to commercial-in-confidence negotiations between Ramsay and Queensland Health regarding the lease, including the length of, that is the issue. There has never been any concern that an extension or new lease would not occur, and to indicate otherwise is misinforming our community.
Once the current appeal by Ramsay Health against Noosa Council’s decision regarding the use of a neighbouring site is finalised, regardless of the determination, no doubt there will be an announcement from the Department of Health.
