Upgrade of nightmare intersection ‘prioritised’

BY ALEX PURCELL AN upgrade of Cooroy’s nightmare intersection on Elm and Diamond Streets is being prioritised by politicians.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton told the Cooroy Rag an upgrade of the intersection is “top of the agenda”.

“I met with Transport and Main Roads on 21 April.

Since the last consultation two to three years ago, an upgrade of the intersection has been shelved.

“I’ve asked them to go back and look at it again.”

A TMR spokesperson told the Cooroy Rag they have undertaken early planning for future upgrades at the intersection but there is currently no funding allocated to complete detailed design or construction.

“This work will be considered in the future, after assessment of competing state-wide priorities and depending on funding availability.”

TMR said key stakeholders and the community provided feedback in 2019 on traffic signals as a possible future upgrade option.

“Our preferred option remains a signalised intersection which would cater for future traffic demand, improve safety and accessibility for all road users, and reduce impacts on nearby properties.

“Signals also offer safer provisions for bike riders and pedestrians, which is a key consideration.”

Mr Skelton said the preferred option is traffic lights.

“The priority is always going to be safety and traffic lights are the better option for moving traffic and people walking and cycling safely.

“A roundabout could create more safety issues and would involve four resumptions.”

Mr Skelton said he, along with Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, is lobbying for a solution and a community consultation.

“I have spoken with Sandy about having a public consultation to inform locals why a roundabout won’t work.

“Sandy and I are working towards having something from TMR to update the community.”

Cooroy From the desk of your roaming editor History THERE is something magical about getting up early in the morning and coming together to remember those who gave their lives so we could have the freedoms we enjoy today.

While we usually attend the Alex Purcell, Anzac Day Dawn Service Cooroy Rag at the Cooroy Cenotaph, Roaming Editor since travelling we have had the opportunity to join other communities for the commemoration.

Last year we were in Lightning Ridge, a unique and historic opal mining town in outback NSW. This year we were in Bingara (NSW), a beautiful country town nestled on the bank of the mighty Gwydir River. We joined the throng gathered in the dark at the RSL Park for a lovely service. Afterwards, we attended the free gunfire breakfast at the RSL Services Club, mingling with the locals.

I was delighted to see that back home not only did a large number of people attend the Cooroy Dawn Service, but there were also other services held to pay respects in their own special way.

A large group climbed Mount Cooroora with Erin Yardwood from E Fitness for a Dawn Service on top of the mountain, while others joined the crew at Pomona Fire and Rescue Station for a playing of the Last Post.

Wherever you were or however you commemorated Anzac Day, we remember them.

Ms Bolton told the Cooroy Rag she continues to strongly support ongoing efforts to address the safety and functionality issues of the Elm and Diamond St intersection and also the Elm and Myall St intersection.

"TMR proposed traffic lights for these intersections in 2018 in response to the need for greater safety; however their communi-

ty consultation in 2019 showed a preference for roundabouts, a much more costly option requiring land resumptions.

“TMR advised they will re-engage with stakeholders and the community once funding becomes available; however we cannot wait for further accidents, and need concentrated advocacy from our communities to demonstrate this is a priority for them.”

Although the intersection is situated within the Nicklin Electorate, Ms Bolton said it is utilised by Noosa Electorate residents daily, hence why she will continue to advocate with Mr Skelton to see these intersections remedied “with safety a priority".

Mr Skelton said going on from that, it will be up to them, as politicians, to rally for funding if one model gets up because there is

currently no funding allocated to progress upgrades to the intersections at Diamond and Elm Streets and Myall and Elm Streets beyond preliminary planning.

Community concern and frustration with the intersection at Elm and Diamond Streets raised its head again recently following a two-car traffic accident (pictured).

But a TMR spokesperson said while they do everything they can to maintain and improve the state-controlled road network, ultimately road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“All motorists need to be aware of the fatal five and take them seriously: drink driving and drug driving, fatigue, inattention, not using a seatbelt, and speeding.

“Motorists are reminded to stick to the speed limits, abide by the road rules and drive to the conditions.”

Congestion at the intersection is also a source of contention, with motorists using Kauri and Pearl Streets to avoid it.

A Pearl Street resident who asked not to be named said while she is impacted by people using the street to avoid the intersection, she is very understanding of motorists’ need to do so.

“Understandably, people use Pearl Street as a rat run to avoid the intersection and I totally understand that.

“I think Noosa Council has been pretty good at looking after Pearl and Kauri Streets to deal with the higher traffic. Pearl Street was recently resurfaced.”

Feedback about the intersections can be emailed to NCR_Planning@tmr.qld. gov.au and will be used to inform future planning stages when funding becomes available.

Community’s say Rose Baumann Butler: “Horrible intersection – should set up traffic lights as a roundabout at this spot would just not work with how busy it is.”

Lisa Bloxsome: “They need a roundabout there and traffic lights just over the bridge. The two intersections are dangerous.

Sherryl Gary Davis: “It is not a horrible intersection; just be patient and drive when safe to do so. In saying that, it is a nightmare at school time – to turn right from stop sign, can wait for 10 mins. I would say yes to traffic lights.”

Debbie Lee: “This is a horrible intersection. I go out of my way to avoid it.”

Ray Vella: “Have you tried getting out of the railway station? Okay if you’re heading north.

Other directions … pray.”

Vicki Vale: “Roundabout is not the answer. It allows a continuous flow of speeding traffic, making pedestrian and bike travel super dangerous, if not downright unviable. There are schools with very young children crossing in this area, and services such as railway, shops and access bridge to town. Pedestrian safety must be a priority.

If you want less traffic on the roads, lights and pedestrian infrastructure is the only solution to both these intersections.”

Kathy Mary: “This intersection could benefit if upgraded to a roundabout. During busy times of day, it is challenging to navigate.”

Julie Battye: “Why can't they put a roundabout here, there's plenty of room. It's quite obviously a bottleneck at busy times.”

THE Black Mountain landslide – as wide as a rugby league playing field and as deep as a five-storey building – is the largest-ever reconstruction tender to be issued by Noosa Council.

Council issued tender documents last week after design concepts were endorsed by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.

Council’s Acting CEO Larry Sengstock said it’s hoped to have a contractor in place as soon as possible.

“It’s a significant milestone to issue this tender as engineers have grappled with the complexities and challenges of restoring such a significant landslip,” he said.

Six thousand cubic metres of cement and 800 tonnes of steel are some of the materials needed to restore the section of Black Mountain damaged in the 2022 floods.

Tender documents show that construction crews will be required to drive more than 300 steel and concrete piles into the ground to create a solid platform to rebuild the road and stabilise the road area at depths between five metres and 25 metres.

“We still have a considerable amount of work to do, but the issuing of the tender is a significant project milestone.

“Given the significant engineering and market-based

challenges, we remain hopeful of getting strong responses from major construction firms.”

Mayor Clare Stewart said it was positive to see the project reach this milestone.

“We appreciate the challenges faced by residents of Black Mountain and we have endeavoured to assist in as many ways as possible.

“The landslide is quite complex, and we thank the impacted communities for their patience and willingness to adapt to the ongoing changes this disaster has created for them,” she said.

The tender period closes 23 May.

AN automated external defibrillator (AED) has been installed in Black Mountain.

The defibrillator, deployed by the Rotary Club of Cooroy, is there for community use in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Rotary Club of Cooroy president Andrew Aves said the Black Mountain community was isolated as a result of last year’s landslide and that has caused emergency response times to increase significantly.

“With the road forecast to remain closed for some considerable time, travel time for emergency vehicles has increased from around 10 minutes to 30 minutes in the event of a 000 call.

“Residents have been concerned that such delays could be a matter of life and death, especially for someone suffering a major episode such as a heart attack.”

Andrew said local resident Alex McConnell on behalf of the community approached the Rotary Club of Cooroy seeking assistance to acquire a defibrillator.

“The club is pleased to have been able to help with funding from the Noosa Council through the jointly

funded Australian and Queensland Government (50:50) exceptional circumstances Category C funding package approved under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2018 (DRFA) for the AED.” Rotary members officially handed over the AED to members of the Black Mountain community on Sunday 23 April.

Black Mountain resident Alex McConnell said it was fantastic to have Cooroy Rotary Club come out and deploy the defibrillator.

“It will be backed up by four members of the community who have committed to volunteering their time as QAS First Responders.

“First, in an emergency, call 000 but anyone can access this AED and it may provide vital assistance while trained help is on its way.

“We intend to work toward additional signage but encourage residents to take the time to drive by and familiarise themselves with the location.”

The defibrillator has been installed beside the letterbox of Noosa Country Cat Motel at 582 Black Mountain Road.

“It is about 100 metres onto the bitumen coming from the west toward the landslip and 100 metres before the end of the bitumen if heading from the landslip,” Alex said.

Andrew said the defibrillator has been strategically located.

“With the kind permission of local residents Owen and Amy Langley of Noosa Country Cat Motel, the AED can be accessed 24/7.

“Its use could be critical while awaiting an emergency response from an ambulance.”

Andrew said the Rotary Club of Cooroy acknowledges the generous support of the Noosa Council in this important initiative and is delighted that it has been able to acquire a defibrillator for the local Black Mountain community.

“While we hope it never has to be used, it was pleasing to see so many local residents grateful for the defibrillator being accessible to their community.”

The defibrillator will remain at Black Mountain until the road is repaired, after which time Cooroy Rotary will determine its future use.

A LOCAL hair stylist is celebrating a crowning accomplishment.

Former Cooroy woman, Teisha Parker has won the Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Wedding Industry Awards 2023 Bridal Hair Stylist.

Teisha said she knew she always wanted to get into bridal hair styling, even before she started her hairdressing apprenticeship.

“I started my apprenticeship after finishing school at Noosa High but I got a bad shoulder and had to leave for several months.

“I remember thinking then, should I just do weddings?”

Even though she was classed as having a disability because her shoulder was chronic, Teisha went back to hairdressing to finish her apprenticeship.

“I did my apprenticeship part-time so it took five years instead of three.

“After I finished I was still thinking about doing wedding styling so I attended

bridal styling classes on the Gold Coast.”

It was at these classes that Teisha met a makeup artist from the Coast who asked her to freelance for her.

“My first bridal trial did not go so well. Back then I did my trials for free and then I didn’t get the job.

“But I knew I was doing the right thing. I felt like wedding hairstyling came naturally to me.”

So Teisha launched her business, Dream Bridal Hair and hasn’t looked back.

“I still work in a beautiful salon called Si Organics,

Barry first moved to Pomona in 1973 and said he has seen a lot of changes over the last 50 years.

“I had Pomona Engineering, where the Pomona IGA now stands. While the demographic has changed, Pomona hasn’t – it’s still a great little town.”

Barry is also the longest-serving member of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club.

“I joined the Lions Club in 1973 and have had many roles including president, vice president, membership chairperson and King Of The Mountain (KOM) race director.”

While Barry has worn many hats during his time with the Lions, he said his true passion has been as race coordinator for the

“I think weddings are one of those things, you either love it or hate it.

“And I love it. I love working with brides and have worked with some beautiful brides.”

Teisha said her signature style is effortless, romantic hair. Teisha is now in the running for the Australian Wedding Industry Awards and was an ABIA hairstylist finalist for Queensland last year.

Barry celebrated his 80th birthday on 14 April with Lions members, family, relations and many friends.

A COOROY family has farewelled a beloved husband, father and grandfather, former business owner and local icon.

Tim Comino passed away on 2 April after celebrating his 74th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary.

Wife Anna said she and Tim moved to Cooroy in 1986 with young twin sons Nicholas and Leon.

“Tim became the new proprietor of the local Mitre 10 at 18 Maple Street, where it is currently operating, later expanding and relocating it to Jarrah Street in the industrial estate.

“He approached the business with enthusiasm and vigour, adding a garden centre and expanding trading to seven days a week.”

In 1988, Tim and Anna welcomed their third son, Alex.

Tim was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Cooroy and Anna said he enjoyed hosting exchange students and mentoring local students at the Noosa District High School during Business Week.

“He became an honorary member of the Rotary Club in 2021.

“As well as his involvement in Rotary and endless barbecues and sausage sizzles, Tim always put his hand up to volunteer on fundraisers and committees for local groups like Scouts and Cooroy Kindergarten where our sons attended over the years.”

Born in Emerald, after boarding school in Brisbane, Tim worked a claim at the Rubyvale Gemfields for 12 years.

“He loved the life out there, operating big machinery and dealing with many challenges, handling machinery problems, water supply, and dealing and selling his stone to those crafty buyers from overseas.

“They were wild times out there in the 1970s and he formed many lifelong friendships with locals from Emerald and the Gemfields.”

Anna said Tim’s love of adventure saw him joining 4WD groups to explore remote areas of Australia.

“He was determined to

get to the most northerly, southerly, eastern and western points of the continent, which he did achieve.”

Overseas trips were also on his bucket list and Tim made three trips to Africa and even Antarctica. In later years, Tim and Anna made several trips to Europe, Asia, Canada, Alaska and North and South America.

Anna said it was only after 21 years in business in Cooroy that Tim retired and took it easy.

“But sadly his recent struggle, since 2017, with mobility issues caused by Lewy Body Disease necessitated full-time care and he became a resident at Arcare Noosa in September 2021.

Anna and all their family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Arcare Noosa for their kindness and compassionate care during his time there.

“Thanks also goes to everyone for their condolence messages, cards, gifts and flowers.

“Tim had made his wishes clear that he did not want a funeral service.”

New vets have tails wagging

New Eumundi Vets owners Chris and Steph Smith.

A POPULAR Eumundi veterinary practice is under new ownership.

Husband and wife team Chris and Stephanie Smith have purchased Eumundi Vets.

Chris and Steph graduated from veterinary school in South Africa in 2015 and after working in various charity hospitals, Chris said they decided to do some travelling in Australia and never looked back.

“We do miss our family and friends back home but we assimilated well into the lifestyle here and have established a great support system.”

After travelling for a few years while Steph completed further training at the University of Queensland and Murdoch University, the couple finally settled here.

They had both been working in clinics in Noosa when the

opportunity to purchase Eumundi Vets presented itself.

“With us both being vets, we have always wanted to own our own clinic. We have worked at a lot of clinics around Australia and Steph has worked at referral centres as well. We wanted to use this combined experience to create a gold-standard clinic while maintaining that wholesome family-owned practice feel.

“We are now both working full-time at the practice. I have a keen interest in surgery and Steph enjoys working on complex medical cases. We believe our varied interests and expertise contribute to a well-rounded, knowledgeable team.”

Chris said the business is going very well.

“We are focused on building relationships with our clients while providing a professional, modern veterinarian service.

“We have updated the equipment and diagnostics to provide a modern current touch while maintaining that personal level of service.

“We have also built a website with an online booking system

to make it easier for people to book.

“People really like it; it’s really simple and user-friendly.”

Chris and Steph are also using social media to share behind-the-scenes stories.

“More people want a locally-owned practice. We’re using social media to show people what we do.

“There are tough and sad parts, but veterinary is very rewarding and we’re trying to share that via social media.”

Focusing on small animals only, Chris said their aim is to be a full-capacity small animal clinic.

“We are open Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am to 12 noon.”

“We see everything from dogs to cats to the odd guinea pig, bird and even rats.”

“We see a lot of emergencies and we always prioritise and triage and we put a huge amount of effort into patient care. We have a team of four nurses dedicated to patient care.”

Rob Skelton Member for Nicklin IN PARLIAMENT we passed legislation expanding the Drug Diversion Program.

The current program gives police powers to refer people found possessing small amounts of cannabis to health intervention programs. The Bill passed last week extends that power to all other drugs.

This implements a diversion framework to prioritise harm minimisation over criminal prosecution. Drug use and addiction is a complex issue and research increasingly shows that the right way to look at it is as a health problem, not a crime problem. These new laws mean more people can access diversionary options, helping our communities become healthier and safer.

It would be reasonable to assume that doctors calling themselves a ‘surgeon’ or

a ‘cosmetic surgeon’ or ‘aesthetic surgeon’ have at least a minimum level of advanced specialist surgical training. This is not always the case. Last week, our government introduced laws to regulate the use of the title ‘surgeon’ and ensure that medical practitioners have an appropriate level of surgical training to safely perform surgical procedures. We acknowledge and have a deep respect for the hard work, dedication, and years of training that are required of surgeons working across Australia. That’s why we are focused on ensuring that patient safety is paramount.

I joined Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the rest of the government in announcing my support for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. This year’s

referendum will be a chance for us to make history, allowing representatives to advise parliament about laws that impact the lives and communities of Indigenous Australians. Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor MANY residents across our shire have recently received their land valuations from the Qld State Government which have substantially increased since last year.

The Queensland Valuer-General’s latest valuations for Noosa have seen many land values double in 12 months. It’s very disappointing that the state government opted to conduct land valuations in Noosa for the second consecutive year where other areas, including the Sunshine Coast, were not re-valued.

Both myself and Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig have sought a meeting with the state’s natural resources minister to call for changes to Queensland’s rating system to lessen the financial impact that dramatic land value increases are having on our ratepayers.

If the new valuations are simply fed into the current rating structure, Noosa ratepayers would face average increases of around

44%. All councillors however are committed to keeping rate rises to a minimum through the budget process and staff are working on a range of scenarios to lessen the impact of the sharp valuation increase come budget time.

Property owners can object to the state government-determined land valuation and to contact the State Valuation Service to query or lodge an objection call 1300 664 217.

On a brighter note, Noosa Council is very pleased to have completed the $1.29 million Middle Creek Road upgrade at Federal.

The work was fast-tracked to cater for increased traffic flow due to the Black Mountain landslide diversion.

The project has improved drainage and provided new line markings and signage, and the road shoulder has also been widened and sealed.

Council is continuing to work hard to restore Black Mountain Road following the landslide and we ap-

preciate residents’ patience while we do it, but in the meantime, this upgrade will cater for increased traffic flow on Middle Creek Road which links Federal State School and Andersons Road.

Noosa Council anticipates that the total cost of flood recovery reconstruction for the shire will exceed $65 million.

Finally, new shade structures have improved Cooroy Library’s outdoor learning space. The existing synthetic turf has also been renewed to improve heat resistance.

Library staff are excited to plan activities to further activate the outdoor space, particularly with youth groups and younger visitors, following this $120,000 upgrade.

Grab the kids or just head out on your own for some quiet time – there is nothing better than sitting outside in the shade with a good book.

Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay ONE of my highlights each July is the annual King of the Mountain (KOM) event at Pomona, where the community comes together to host a family-friendly day out in one of the most picturesque hinterland towns on the Sunshine Coast.

The 2023 KOM is shaping up to be another fantastic day with an amazing variety of activities on offer.

Runners from far and wide are drawn to Pomona for the Mountain Challenge which is considered to be one of the world’s most gruelling races.

Many of the Mountain Challenge competitors have been returning year after year, coming back to test themselves and their endurance against the Mount Cooroora circuit.

The juniors have their own challenge in conquering the Prince and Princess circuit and there’ll be plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy – with the arts and craft market, antique fair, pony rides, live music, and sand sculpture in the

park that includes kids’ play workshops. The KOM event is a wonderful example of community groups and local businesses working hand in hand to stage a festival that attracts visitors, showcases our gorgeous part of the world, and delivers significant social and economic benefits to the region.

I HAVE sat on the Tourism Noosa board for the last three years as the elected council observer and these are some of my observations.

One, we live in the best place on Earth, and with that comes so many different and high expectations, challenges, and opportunities.

Two, in Noosa, tourism is everyone’s business.

Tourism is the number one economic driver for the region, injecting $1.6b into the Noosa economy, and the flow-on effect of tourism affects almost every business in our region.

It also affects the health and well-being of our residents and our lifestyle.

Positives include living in a vibrant community, having access to a beautiful natural environment and world-class dining experiences, and the opportunity to be involved in a range of sports, arts and foodie events as participants and volunteers.

Like anywhere, there are negatives, and they include congestion of traffic and the

impact on the quality of our trails, the surfing experience, our national parks and the vibrancy of our local art and culture.

The challenge for us is that we need to work out how to achieve both resident aspirations to maintain residential amenities and lifestyle, and visitor desires for a unique Noosa experience.

We need to deliver a coordinated and clear message to visitors about who we are and what we value. That is, to enjoy and respect Noosa, our environment and the people who live here.

And that’s where Tourism Noosa fits in. It is our one voice.

If we market Noosa with many voices, then it becomes ‘what’s in it for me’, rather than ‘what is the greater good for the destination’, and the destination loses its brand.

If Tourism Noosa stops marketing, the one million-plus day trippers who come here will continue to come.

Picnic amongst historic cars Household retrofit workshop

A COOROY couple with a love of historic cars is inviting the community to come and have a picnic amongst their collection to raise money for a good cause.

Colin and Maxine Kiel had a motor museum in Victoria before moving to Cooroy.

When it came time for the pair to retire, Colin followed his passion for historic motor vehicles and added a few other vehicles to his already eclectic collection.

Today, they continue to offer the museum to car enthusiasts and other community groups for viewing at their Lake Macdonald property.

Colin said they’ve always believed in supporting their local community and were both heavily involved in many community activities for over 30 years.

“So when we were approached by members of the Tewantin Noosa Branch of Australian Red Cross to hold

a charity fundraiser in the form of a Picnic Amongst the Cars showing our historic vehicles and a display of other vehicles, we enthusiastically agreed.”

The community is invited to purchase a ticket to join the Red Cross on Sunday 28 May at Lake Macdonald for a charcoal-cooked spit roast under a marquee among the Kiel’s eclectic collection of cars.

There will be live music by the Hot Peppers Jazz Band, raffles and a silent auction.

All proceeds raised will support the Queensland services of the Red Cross working within our communities, supporting those persons experiencing difficult life issues. Services include the Disability Employment Service, the Migrant Support Services and the Night Cafe offering meals and guidance to our homeless youth.

Community donations program

COOROY RSL’s biannual community donations program is open for applications, with the closing date being 20 May. President Barrie Adams said, last year through their community donations pro-

gram they provided over $75,000 of donations and sponsorships back to local community organisations and activities.

“Our donation program is well received by the community and an initiative

to give back to the community for their support of the Club.”

A GROUP of researchers is wanting to work with local residents to talk about ideas for adapting existing housing retrofit toolkits to find practical means of ensuring preparedness in the event of climate-related natural disasters, in particular bushfire.

Residents, particularly recent arrivals to the Noosa hinterland and older residents, are invited to attend a workshop to be held at Lawson Shed, Pomona and District Community House, on Saturday 13 May from 9 am to 3 pm. Attendance is

free and morning tea and lunch will be provided.

At the workshop, participants will be invited to take part in a roundtable discussion with specialist facilitators and members of the research team. Attendees will also be invited to complete a questionnaire and submit their own ideas for refining home retrofit options they themselves can use to adapt to their individual circumstances.

The researchers, from several academic institutions including the University of Canberra, Western

Sydney University and the University of Technology Sydney, will examine the various toolkits developed for households since the 2019-20 bushfire season and assess their relevance and suitability today.

The Australian Government is funding the initiative through the National Emergency Management Authority and it is hoped the research will be completed by the end of 2024.

Birds topic of NPA forum Community Diary

BIRD research and banding is the topic of the next Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on 12 May. Guest speaker Gillian Matthew has been a keen birder since childhood and is now a member of the Queensland Bird Research and Banding group.

The group was formed to advance the knowledge and conservation of birds in Queensland through citizen science research and operates a waterbird, a shorebird and a land bird program with several identifiable projects, with bird banding playing an important role in bird research.

Bird banding is regulated to ensure ethical practices and bird welfare and the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme coordinates banding nationally, manages the collation of information on bird and bat species, licenses banders and provides numbered bands.

After a long working career with the Australian Government in parks and conservation, Gillian now manages three local banding sites at Mountain Creek, Kawana and Kybong.

At the forum, Gillian will offer insight into the work of the Queensland Bird Research and Banding group who are highly qualified professional bird banders, and provide information on how you might become involved.

The forum at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, starts at 10:30 am and morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Entry is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door and includes morning tea/coffee.

Lions Club to celebrate 50 years THE Cooroy Pomona Lions Club is celebrating 50 years of community service.

Since it was chartered in May 1972, the Lions Club has undertaken many projects and fundraising activities which have touched and improved the lives of people in the community and further afield.

Cooroy Pomona Lions Club member Robin Salmon said wherever there is a need, the Lions Club has been there.

“Local schools, Scouts, SES, community events, facilities for medical care, rescue helicopter, youth projects, support for the elderly, individuals and families – the Lions Club has been there to help.”

To celebrate its 50 years of community service, the Lions Club is planning a 50th birthday celebration with an open day at the Lions Den on Mountain Street, Pomona.

“This old school building was rebuilt by Lions members over some years with the help of a grant and many hours of volunteer labour.

The Den is now a well-used community facility of which the Lions are very proud.

Majestic gives back FROM a community hall to a notfor-profit, small community-run theatre and cinema raising funds for other not-for-profits, the Majestic Theatre has been serving the community for over 100 years.

Majestic Theatre Pomona president Alison Hadfield said the Majestic raised over $30,000 last year, allowing not-for-profits to hold events at the theatre free of charge.

“Any not-for-profit can hire the theatre for free to do a fundraiser.

Over $10,000 has been raised already this year for not for profits.

“We raised $3,500 for Noosa FM by running a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening. Noosa Landcare raised almost $2,000 in January by screening an environmental movie and we just did a fundraiser for one of the community members to assist with medical expenses for their little boy, which raised $5,500.

“We did a similar one to that last December for a little girl in Kin Kin who has a rare cancer.

“The Heart of Gold Film Festival will do a fundraiser again this year to raise money for this year’s festival and Noosa Jazz Inc. hold jazz gigs on the fourth Thursday of the month. We don’t charge them for the use of the hall and we also allow them to house their grand piano there which we hire out to acts for a fee and they get the fee.”

Alison said when the theatre was in hard times, the community rallied to save it so it’s only right they should give back to the community.

“Part of our initiative is to allow the community, which owns the theatre, to use it to help out the community.

“We love doing it. It’s a fantastic thing for the community and we welcome all not-for-profits to contact us if they wish to raise funds for their organisation on 5485 2330 or via email admin@themajestictheatre.com.au.

Four generations celebrate Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day Kathy Oxborough, Zani, Pippa and Ohara Murphy.

FOR one local family, Mother’s Day is always a special occasion. But this year it will be extra special.

Federal resident Zani Murphy said this year there will be four generations of her family celebrating Mother’s Day. “We always get together on Mother’s Day and have a shared lunch with my mum Kathy, but this year my daughter Pippa will celebrate her first Mother’s Day.

“Her daughter, Ohara, is almost four months old.

“So it will be a special Mother’s Day this year.”

The four generations – Kathy, Zani, Pippa and Ohara – and their families will celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday 7 May under the fig tree on Zani’s property.

“We always do our special things under the fig tree. My husband Matt and I even got married under the tree.”

sweetheart Matt bought their property in Federal 23 years ago.

“Our property is only six minutes from where I grew up in Black Mountain.”

Zani said for her, Mother’s Day is always a special occasion.

“I’m grateful to have such an amazing mum, someone who is always there for us, and I’m blessed that my whole family is able to come together.”

IT’S that time of year.

As the cold creeps up and the heating comes on, our skin needs more hydration and moisture.

Local naturopath and nutritionist and owner of Nubeean Noosa Healthy Skin[care], Sarah Luck, said at the annual change of seasons, everyone begins to hunt for the best moisturiser for their dry skin.

“Cold or windy weather is notorious for causing dry, red and irritated skin. Indoor heating during the cooler months is just as problematic.

non-greasy oil that is absorbed quickly into the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and silky.

“It’s a game changer for all skin types, whether you’re struggling with adult acne, rosacea, eczema, dry skin, sensitive, reactive or mature skin.

“Both oily and acne-prone skin can be affected by dehydration, making squalane beneficial for these skin types. In fact, because squalane is so similar to the natural squalene found in our skin’s sebum, it can help to regulate oil production in oily skin.

Snakes are getting their last meals before winter. This carpet snake ate a guinea pig.

THE second half of autumn and winter is fast approaching and snakes are getting as much sun and food as they can before it gets cold.

Snake Catcher Noosa’s Luke Huntley said snakes on the Sunshine Coast don’t

actually hibernate because it’s not cold enough; they do what’s called brumation.

“They brumate, not hibernate. They sleep on cold days and come out on warmer ones. It’s kind of a halfway hibernation they go

into during the cold months.

They slow down and do less but are still awake.

“So what does this actually mean? Basically, they won’t be going very far from where they are comfortable and safe, so roofs, logs, piles of wood, sheets of roof tin on the ground, rock walls and basically anywhere dry and warm you may find a snake.

“They come out, get some sun and warmth, then head back to sleep in their little safe spot.”

Luke said to keep things like shoes inside, don’t leave doors open, and most importantly, keep your property clean with short grass and no piles of leaves and sticks.

“If you have piles of stuff laying around, you have created a warm dry spot for a snake. So open and exposed equals no hiding place for a snake. Roofs can be difficult because it’s a roof but if you want me to get up there and see what’s going on, give me a call and I’ll jump into the roof.

“That’s pretty much all that is happening with the snakes over the next four months. Keep an eye out and if you ever need me or want to ask a question, give me a call on 0499 920 290.”

Mother’s Day orchid show in Tewantin NOOSA District Orchid & Foliage Society is holding its annual Mother’s Day show on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May in the Catholic Hall, Moorindil Street, Tewantin. Entry is $4.

This show not only provides spectacular flowers and foliage displays of prize-winning plants but it’s also a great opportunity to buy a beautiful Mother’s Day orchid gift.

Experienced orchid growers, like Lois Walters who has great experience and is

a multiple award winner at participating orchid shows, will be on hand to advise on caring for orchids.

While orchids have a reputation for being delicate and tricky plants to grow, they are actually surprisingly tolerant, although being watered too much is a problem. They have existed for more than 80 million years in a wide range of climates and regions across the earth.

Buying the right orchids for your location is one of

the best ways to maximise your success, along with getting some local growers’ tips through joining an orchid club.

The Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society will be 40 years old next year and welcomes new members to join their monthly meetings.

POMONA Cooran Cutters Rugby League celebrated one year with its Junior Cutters on 13 April.

Pomona Cooran Cutters RLFC president Sharon Collins said the celebration, attended by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart and councillors Karen Finzel, Amelia Lorentson, Joe Jurisevic and Frank Wilkie, started with some training, then a

sausage sizzle followed by the presentation of a commemorative frame.

“The Pomona Cooran Cutters Rugby League formed in 1989 as a stand-alone senior club and played their first game in 1990.

“The club has tried a few times to get juniors but has never been successful till last year.”

Sharon (life member and

president) said she, Teagan Boys (coach and treasurer) and Luke Martin (coach) were the founders of the juniors last year.

“We started with two teams last year, U7s and U9s, and now have doubled to four teams.

“Age groups range from U6 to U10 with the intention to expand next year.”

POMONA’S AFL grounds are home to a new non-sporting facility.

A Containers For Change recycling depot has been

installed at the Pomona Demons AFL Club on Pioneer Road.

Pomona Demons president Matt Conquest said the Con-

tainers For Change drop-off at the football grounds is for all the community’s 10c bottle recycling.

“All you have to do is sign up for an ID number and write it on your bags and drop them off at the local drop off at the oval and bang you are done.

“Jump on board and get some cash back for your cans and bottles.”

THE second running of the Cooroy Mountain Park Fun Run has been confirmed for Sunday 2 July.

Race director Andy Town said he was delighted to get the go-ahead from Stuart Moody, owner of the Cooroy Mountain Park.

“We are extremely grateful to Stuart and K2 Property for once again making his property exclusively available to run on. It really is a stunning backdrop for a trail run with such diversity and world-class views from the summit.”

The event is billed as a family fun event attracting

all levels of runners, from novice trail to elite professional.

A 10 km course has been added this year to complement last year’s fun 5 km distance.

“This year’s event will be run entirely on Cooroy Mountain Park; this allows exclusive access to what otherwise is strictly private property.

“We are extremely fortunate to be given this opportunity,” Andy said.

New life for old Queenslander

The old house and the house now in the new position on the block.

AN old Queenslander in Pomona has been given a new lease of life.

Built in circa 1937, 13 Rectory Street was a single-level Queenslander in need of some love when locals Kent and Kate Mayne bought it in a “lucky buy”.

Kate said their first goal was to update the inside of the property to make it aesthetically pleasing to live in.

“When we moved in on 21 December 2021 we ripped up the carpets, all three layers of them, sanded all the floors, painted the entire house and removed the enclosed balcony to open the home back up and give it back that Queenslander

feel. We then painted the outside and replaced the balustrade.”

All the time, in the background, Kent and Kate were undertaking a boundary realignment to turn the blocks from facing Red Street to Rectory Street.

“The location of the home comes under a ‘Heritage Overlay’, so we consulted with Noosa Council’s planning department and heritage advisors to ensure that the plans we submitted would be in keeping with the streetscape and period of the home.”

Kate said it was amazing to watch when in September, Queensland House Re-

movals lifted and shifted the home into its new position.

“It then sat high and empty while we waited patiently for the stumping and the stairs to be built, thanks to Ryan Gilbert our local carpenter, and then the reconnection of the utilities.”

By late February the titles were issued on the blocks and 13 and 13A Rectory Street became official.

“By then our final plans and designs were well underway and we have been ever so grateful to our architectural designer, Antonia O’Brien from Antonia Jane Designs for the continual revisions.

“Knowing that whilst we

are mindful of keeping the streetscape sympathetic to the heritage overlay we wanted to take full advantage of the interior that was very modern, sharp and functional for what was now to become a large family home.”

The dilemma they faced was how to integrate from old to new.

“I wanted ultra-modern and Kent wanted traditional. So we approached Gull Design for interior design advice who managed to decipher our two different ideas over two different eras.

“The old house will feature a whisky room complete with chesterfields and moody

walls, built-in joinery and chandeliers, a library with a bench seat that faces east and takes in the beautiful sunrises through stained glass windows that are currently being restored with traditional methods at Bello Vetro leadlight studio here on the Sunshine Coast.

“There’s a new bathroom and a stairway down to the new extension. The new extension takes you on a journey from art deco upstairs to the modern downstairs which is connected by an art gallery hallway with a bench seat and an atrium before it opens up to a spacious kitchen/dining/ lounge that overlooks the

outdoor entertaining area.

Upstairs the entire floor is a master suite with cathedral ceilings, a luxury robe and an oversized ensuite.”

After living in Pomona for a couple of decades and both very active in the community, Kate said they were very keen to ensure that they keep the work local.

“From the foundations and retaining we credit Wayne Randall Bobcat and Excavating and Simon from Eastern Brick Works who is based in Cooran and built the retaining walls. The builder who’s been appointed is also a Pomona Local, Ash Schmidt from BTC Building and he’s using locals too such as Jimmy from Belarc Plumbing and Anthony from Arc Electrical. Kudos goes out to the tradies for all the interim work to keep a roof over our heads over the past two years.”

In its entirety, the process from start to finish of the re-alignment, building and design approvals and titles issued was a two-year process and Kate said she thinks it will take the rest of 2023 to see the full dream come to reality.
