Upgrade of nightmare intersection ‘prioritised’ BY ALEX PURCELL AN upgrade of Cooroy’s nightmare intersection on Elm and Diamond Streets is being prioritised by politicians. Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton told the Cooroy Rag an upgrade of the intersection is “top of the agenda”. “I met with Transport and Main Roads on 21 April. Since the last consultation two to three years ago, an upgrade of the intersection has been shelved. “I’ve asked them to go back and look at it again.” A TMR spokesperson told the Cooroy Rag they have undertaken early planning for future upgrades at the intersection but there is currently no funding allocated to complete detailed design or construction. “This work will be considered in the future, after assessment of competing state-wide priorities and depending on funding availability.” TMR said key stakeholders and the community provided feedback in 2019 on traffic signals as a possible future upgrade option. “At that time, the community feedback favoured a

roundabout. “Our preferred option remains a signalised intersection which would cater for future traffic demand, improve safety and accessibility for all road users, and reduce impacts on nearby properties. “Signals also offer safer provisions for bike riders and pedestrians, which is a key consideration.” Mr Skelton said the preferred option is traffic lights. “The priority is always going to be safety and traffic lights are the better option for moving traffic and people walking and cycling safely. “A roundabout could create more safety issues and would involve four resumptions.” Mr Skelton said he, along with Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, is lobbying for a solution and a community consultation. “I have spoken with Sandy about having a public consultation to inform locals why a roundabout won’t work. “Sandy and I are working towards having something from TMR to update the community.” Continued on page 3.
