McDermott Aviation celebrates milestone birthday

BY VANESSA HALL FROM private charters to salvage operations, coming to the rescue literally in a medevac emergency or to fire-control measures, Cooroy-based McDermott Aviation have been there. They recently celebrated their 40th birthday, and the family-run business is proud to still be located in the same premises in Cooroy all these years later.

The company is the largest privately owned and operated heli-aviation company in Australia – which is no small feat in the world of aviation and small business.

Founder John McDermott started in aviation with Ansett as an aircraft engineer in the 70s and said it was rewarding to look back on the decision to be based in the Cooroy region.

“It is strange that it has been

40 years, but being based in Cooroy, it justifies our decision in the first place to choose Cooroy for our business – but also Cooroy has been a brilliant place to raise our four children and be a part of the community,” John said.

And family is where everything starts, with John recounting that they have been the main highlight over the past 40 years.

“Three of our four kids born in

Cooroy is pretty special.”

The company has evolved over 40 years from providing purely aerial application operations to operating Australia’s largest fleet of privately owned helicopters, and are currently the industry leaders in lifting/aerial crane operations, mosquito and fire ant control application, search and rescue operations, VIP charters, and aerial firefighting.

Being in business so long, there

have been highs and lows, with highlights including the many and varied people the team have met over the years.

“It’s often been tough but pretty much always been fun. An interesting fact is that Cooroy is home to us as the helicopter supplier, and Chris Stafford of Qantas as bait suppliers, for the entire Australian Fire Ant Eradication program.”

just having expressed our closely held view and be satisfied with just having been heard.

Sadly, we are suffering from mutually increased personal animosity, from denigration by those who have opposing opinions.

In political matters we are suffering from the lack of debating skills of politicians from all sides of the aisle.

The art of gentle debate in discussion has been lost, and we must all endeavour to restore it to being the way to go in the future. We must concentrate on learning to accept legitimate criticism where it is given, and to discard anger when offence is presented.

On the matter of political

debate in the parliament or at question time, politicians must remove stage management, anger, animosity, and offence in their questions and their answers.

Correct parliamentary procedure is for governments to act and to propose, and for oppositions to either agree if appropriate, or to oppose when inappropriate. There is no need or place for histrionics in the parliament.

The Prime Minister before his election said that if he won government, he would restore civility to the parliament, but he has failed to do so.

the one where there was a massive electrical storm that went through Cooroy about 2 pm, with hail the size of cricket balls, and this storm severely damaged our only helicopter at the time, as well as our house – which meant no income and lots of expenses for few weeks!”

Over the years the company has managed to grow substantially to where they employ over 100 staff worldwide, own 30 helicopters, and conduct business globally.

Firefighting efforts have been one of the main hallmarks of McDermott Aviation, with the company the leader in firefighting services, and they pride themselves on their firefighting ability, performance, and customer service that goes along

with this.

Over the years, challenges have presented themselves: when one is in the field of search and rescue, times are bound to get tough at some point.

“My toughest day was having

to go out and search for a close friend missing, and later found deceased, from a helicopter accident,” John recounted.

“Afterwards I had to go and tell his wife. Hopefully never again.”

“We are now very much an international company with a facility in Alabama USA and we are the largest supplier of heavy firefighting helicopters to the Greek government.

“We are also in the final stages of certification for our large air tankers which are Transall C-160s which we purchased from the German Air Force, and hopefully we will earn contracts within Australia and Europe with these specialist planes.

“Our tanks were also built in Cooroy by Helitak who also make our latest helicopter fire tanks, and we hope to begin our training academy soon to train mechanics and other trades for the future. Aviation is a brilliant career with lots of challenges but great job satisfaction and there’s the opportunity to travel wherever!”

After 40 years, McDermott Aviation certainly look to be setting the benchmark for quality in their field. They are leaders, and a great business that showcases the diverse businesses that are located in the Noosa hinterland.

THE DEPARTMENT of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has announced the new Six Mile Creek Bridge between Pomona and Cooran on Pomona Kin Kin Road, is now complete.

The sturdier bridge structure capable of transporting two lanes of traffic (one lane in each direction) removes the need for motorists to stop and give way, delivering greater safety for all, as well as much-needed improved flood immunity.

This successful, longfought-for project is a testament to what can be achieved when a community stands together, with grassroots advocacy from many including longtime resident and Independent Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton MP. Local resident Ron Green who was one of the tireless grass roots campaigners who spearheaded a petition to get the project underway, was elated with the end result.

“They truly did a wonderful job with this bridge,” Ron said.

“It’s a long overdue project that the locals are extremely happy with, giving safe access to essential services in town, and we must thank Sandy for all of her hard work, and the state government. We had tried for years to get something done here but finally it has happened.”

Ms Bolton said the outcome was a great result for the community.

“This has been a long journey of persistence and hard work that emanated from a meeting as a Noosa councillor with locals Phil Moran, Brian O’Connor, Stephen Hilditch and Gympie MP Tony Perrett as Pomona was in our neighbouring electorate then.

“When elected, I made a commitment to have this bridge replaced, and am thrilled that this has been realised.”

Construction started in late October 2022 and is now complete well ahead of schedule.

“I thank the previous TMR minister Mark Bailey MP and all involved, from

agency staff through to construction workers and contractors,” Sandy said.

In her speech at the opening, Ms Bolton spoke of the journey, including meeting with residents on site, and it was good to see some available to attend this momentous occasion along with Assistant Minister Bruce Saunders.

Sandy also made special mention of ninety-sevenyear-old Jim Grant, who was the first non-construction worker to walk across the new bridge – as he did at the age of nine when the original bridge opened back in 1934.

“All the changes he and other fellow longtime residents have seen in our area over the years and the wisdom they carry is invaluable as we move forward,” Sandy said.

“Thank you for the patience of those impacted by its construction as well as everyone's efforts over this long journey of many years to see this dangerous and flood-prone hotspot remedied.”

Cancellation of Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival in 2024 AFTER STAGING the very successful Cooroy Mountain Spring Festivals (CMSF) since 2014, the Rotary Club of Cooroy has made the difficult decision not to stage the event this year.

A major drawcard of each festival was the once-ayear opportunity for people from far and wide to walk up Cooroy Mountain via the access track from the Cooroy Mountain Spring Water property.

The opportunity to climb the mountain once a year was popular with seasoned climbers, young children and older people who relished being able to see the region from a different vantage.

Sadly, this will not be the case this year after restrictions were put in place by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

president Chris Durie said it was extremely disappointing not to be able to run the event.

“The need to implement and manage arrangements to comply with QPWS directions adds to the work that needs to be done and we only have a limited number of volunteers.”

Restrictions and limitations on the number of people who can climb led to the tough decision being made.

In 2023 QPWS imposed strict limitations, for conservation and cultural reasons, on the number of people permitted to climb the mountain.

“This added significant control measures that the Rotary Club of Cooroy had to manage, particularly a ticketing system and associated checkpoints to control entry to the climb. QPWS has indicated that there is likely to be even stricter re-

strictions if we were to host the event again this year,” Chris stated.

“It is our assessment that the cost benefit analysis does not measure up.”

Sadly, locals are the ones who will miss out.

“We will now need to explore other options to raise funds for local charities and community service organisations that collectively benefitted over $20,000 each year from past CMSFs.” The decision to halt the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival this year is a huge blow to the local region after the popular King of the Mountain event in Pomona was also cancelled due to similar reasons.

“It is very sad to see two major events involving iconic landmarks and community activity now disappear from the local calendar of events,” Chris said.

COOROY residents can now rest assured that a contentious retirement village development earmarked for a parcel of land next to the Cooroy golf course will not be going ahead.

The verdict, which was handed down on May 30 in the Planning and Environment Court, upholds a 2021 decision to refuse a 246-unit retirement village.

Noosa Council’s Planning and Regulation Director Richard MacGillivray said the decision ensured Cooroy’s character was protected, with the site currently zoned Open Space Recreation and Rural Residential.

ON THE back of National Volunteers Week and their Volunteers Fair, Pomona & District Community House (PDCH) have launched ‘Community Compass’, which is a comprehensive guide in hard copy to volunteering in the Noosa hinterland.

Community Compass was made a reality with financial help from all three tiers of government and the hard-working staff from the PDCH, with

Community Development Coordinator Susan Schiotz stating that volunteering leads to resilient communities.

“We know through research that social beings who are connected in their community are more resilient and we also know that volunteering is a great way to give back and to keep those life skills active and engaged.”

The guide has listings from all sections of soci-

ety and features sporting groups, environmental groups and school P&Cs, to name just a few.

“Lots of different groups are represented such as ones that focus on animals – like Riding for the Disabled and PTSD Dogs – and then we have others like Noosa FM, and the smaller bushcare groups … there’s so many in the guide,” Susan said.

Community Compass has all of the necessary information needed for one to get in touch and to start being active and engaged in the community.

IN AN effort to be more inclusive of the hinterland, Noosa Council is pleased to inform the community of their new satellite help desk at Cooroy Library, where customer service will be a priority.

Mayor Frank Wilkie said residents have been asking for more services to be located in the hinterland communities, and the new customer service desk at Cooroy Library is part of council’s plan to make the organisation more accessible to residents and ratepayers in the hinterland.

“We offer numerous ways to reach council – including a call centre, web chat, online services and the Snap Send Solve app – but we know that for many people, face-to-face remains the preferred way of connecting.

“For those who can’t make it to the Tewantin offices, a hinterland option may be easier to access,” Mayor Wilkie said.

Community Services Director Kerri Contini said the hinterland trial builds on efforts to make council and its services more convenient to the community in ways that are relevant to individual needs.

“The library BookShelf kiosks we launched at Pomona and Peregian Beach last year to provide residents in those areas easier access to library services have proven a success, and this trial is another way we hope to extend our reach,” Ms Contini said.

“This trial will tell us if face-to-face customer service should have a permanent presence in the hinterland and what that service should include.”

Council will be collating data on what suburbs people are coming from and the types of enquiries they have.

“In the beginning we will accept credit card, eftpos and cheque payments at Cooroy Library; however during the trial period we

“With three per cent of payments to council made in cash, our main Tewantin customer service counter can of course accept cash,” Ms Contini said.

The new customer service desk is located just inside the Cooroy Library near the library’s help desk.

It will operate from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.

Mayor Wilkie said council planned to periodically hold its Ordinary Meetings at halls and other facilities across the shire so more residents could come along and watch council’s decision-making process in person.

“Our shire covers an 872-square-kilometre area so it’s important we do what we can to bring the functions and services of council out to the people in the further reaches of our shire.”

Hinternoosa mark 35 years in the hinterland real estate market

A Sunshine Coast hinterland real estate agency recently marked an impressive 35 years in operation with a huge party and celebration.

The agency is currently led by industry powerhouses Sirah and John Robb who, at the helm of Hinternoosa, have seen the agency which started from very humble beginnings go on to become the longest standing agency in the hinterland.

On Saturday May 18 the Hinternoosa team along with clients and professional services representatives put on their evening wear for a celebratory soiree at the Cooroy Butter Factory.

Director and principal Sirah Robb, alongside her husband John Robb, welcomed the attendees with a heartfelt speech reflecting on the agency's journey.

"To fully appreciate the significance of this 35-year milestone and where we are today, it helps to reflect back on where we have come from,” Sirah said.

"Thirty-five years ago, in 1989, Murray and Lyndal Brown started Hinternoosa on Garnet Street in Cooroy. Hinternoosa soon became known as the go-to hinterland agency, leading the field in terms of market share and specialising in small to large hinterland acreage and prestige properties."

The Robbs carried forward the legacy initiated by the Browns, emphasising growth and innovation while maintaining core values around client service, results, and community contribution that have defined Hinternoosa for over three decades.

Sirah highlighted significant milestones and recounted how Hinternoosa was able to grow by way of careful acquisitions and mergers, and by also maintaining strong connections in the real estate community.

"In November 2017, in the lead up to Trisha Wythes’ retirement, John and I purchased Wythes Real Estate.

business instantly doubled the size of the Wythes business. Alisa Wythes continued on as an agent, increasing her focus on sales. In December 2018, we bought Hinternoosa when the Browns were retiring, and appointed Kess Prior as principal.

"In 2019 we acquired Fiona Winter Realty as Fiona moved into retirement and we rebranded the agency to Wythes, adding a Doonan office to our offering."

The agency's ability to adapt to changing market conditions has been a cornerstone of its success, with one example being COVID and how the agency dealt with that hurdle.

"The initial couple of months of the unknown soon turned into a transition of all three offices to work from home, daily team communications on new guidelines, and a frantic frenzy of buyers with FOMO," Sirah explained.

"Even in the hectic pace of the pandemic years, we held steadfast to our commitment to client service and continued to achieve the best results in the market."

THIS FRIDAY the Noosa Parks Friday Environment Forum will be looking at bird feeding with special guest Professor Russell McGregor at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville.

Feeding wild birds draws a lot of disapproval.

Influential environmental, governmental and other agencies roundly condemn the practice. This is unique to Australia. In Europe and

North America, by contrast, bird-feeding carries the blessing of bird lovers who, far from trying to stamp it out, do all they can to promote it. So why is Australia different?

This Friday, June 14, Professor Russell McGregor will endeavour to answer that question as there is a twist in the tale. Before the 1980s, Australian ‘birders’ aligned with their overseas counterparts and enthusias-

tically encouraged feeding.

Thereafter, misgivings ballooned into condemnation, hesitations into denunciations. So the real question is: why did Australia become different in the final decades of the twentieth century?

Russell, an adjunct professor of history at James Cook University and award-winning author, will offer some tentative answers, but also wants to hear your ideas.

Be sure to come along to hear a fascinating insight into the bird world at the Friday Forum on June 14 at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville.

THE HEART of Gold International Short Film Festival is once again going on the road with a curated selection of short films and live music, and its ‘Golden Evenings’ regional tour is set to warm up the little country halls across the hinterland this winter.

Every year Gympie comes alive with film lovers from far and wide to celebrate short films that are uplifting, heartwarming and inspirational for the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival which is Queensland’s

THE GINGER Factory in Yandina has unveiled an innovative addition to their attractions, becoming the inaugural site in Australia to host 'Zog, A Forest Adventure’, an augmented reality experience.

Following the huge success of 'The Gruffalo Trail' which concluded in January after more than two years and 150,000 visitors, the new Zog trail was officially launched earlier this year.

Enthusiasts can now download the Zog, A Forest Adventure app and embark on an interactive journey through Zog's dragon school.

Alongside Zog, participants

will encounter beloved characters such as Princess Pearl, Sir Gadabout and Madam Dragon engaging in activities like roaring, flying, and breathing fire.

Adapted from the renowned book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the app is the brainchild of UK-based creative studio Magic Light Pictures.

Using the free app, visitors will be able to take photos and videos of themselves with all the characters at five markers along the outdoor trail that winds through the tropical gardens of The Ginger Factory.

“When The Gruffalo Trail opened in September 2021, we hoped it would run for a year. We couldn’t have predicted how much our guests would respond to the experience and are so proud that The Gruffalo Trail was such a huge hit for over two years.”

Zog, A Forest Adventure is included with admission to The Ginger Factory which is completely free. The Ginger Factory is open seven days a week and is located at 50 Pioneer Road, Yandina.

THE 10-YEAR anniversary of The Kindness Club on Friday, May 24, brought together current and former members along with families and educators to commemorate a decade of kind deeds and community projects.

The birthday was also a chance to reminisce about past kindness projects and to celebrate the community connections and friendships made along the way.

The Kindness Club is a unique Cooroy ‘club’, with facilitator Wendy stating the milestone birthday was reached with the support and help from many people in the community.

“Our friend Phil who has been supporting us and donating to our club since 2015 – we are deeply grateful for his kind heart, generosity and his belief in what we do.

WEIGHT loss can be confusing; there is so much conflicting information out there! Here are my tried and tested tips for ditching diets and finally achieving lasting weight loss.

Stop dieting! Learning to eat healthily is much better for weight management and overall well-being. Healthy eating emphasises balance, variety, and moderation without severe restrictions. It involves incorporating a wide range of nutrient-dense foods – fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains,

and healthy fats. These all provide essential nutrients and promote overall health. Often, the foods that are higher in nutrients are also naturally lower in salt, trans fats, and processed sugars.

Moderation is key: We need a wide range of foods to be healthy, but diets can make out like there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods.

This can lead to guilt, anxiety and disordered eating patterns, binge eating or hyperfixation on the foods we ‘aren’t allowed’ to eat.

This creates an unhealthy

relationship with food, where we are constantly doubting ourselves, or overeating, or undereating, and generally not feeling at ease with our dietary choices.

Focus on nourishment: Another reason to throw away diets is that restrictive diets often lead to nutrient deficiencies. For example, low-carb diets may deprive the body of essential vitamins and minerals found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while low-fat diets can limit healthy fats necessary for brain function and hormone production.

Such imbalances can weaken the immune system, reduce bone density, and impair overall bodily functions.

Calorie counting is a tool, not a lifestyle: Understanding how many calories are in certain foods is useful to make healthy choices. A small reduction over time will lead to weight loss, but lots of diets go too hard too fast. When the body senses a drastic reduction

in calories it goes into starvation mode, conserving energy and burning fewer calories. This metabolic slowdown makes it harder to lose weight and easier to gain it back once you stop dieting.

Think long term: While diets might promise quick results, they often damage long-term health and fail to deliver sustainable weight loss. A healthy eating mindset fosters a positive relationship with food, encouraging mindfulness and listening to the body’s hunger and fullness cues. This approach helps prevent overeating and reduces emotional eating, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight naturally.

Good Shepherd team coach Ms Clare Phyland explained that the students at Good Shepherd have a long history of testing their problem-solving skills through the Tournament of the Minds and now the da Vinci Decathlon.

“This is a competition where teams of eight across 10 disciplines compete in one day of hectic competition.

Categories included engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartogra-

phy and legacy.”

Despite the grueling schedule, Ms Phyland was thrilled with the team’s performance.

“The students were up against some tough competition and they performed brilliantly. To come in second place overall out of 22 teams is amazing.”

What began as a local competition for Australian public and private schools has grown to be a national and global phenomenon.

A little hindsight BACK when I was a new graduate and still doing farm animal work, I was called out to attend to a cow that the owner described as ‘wasting away’. “She will drink but won’t eat” was the information given when asked to elaborate and I set my mind to all the possible causes as I drove out to the property. The disdain on the farmer’s face as I got out of my vehicle and gathered together my diagnostic tools was reinforced by a query as to the whereabouts of the “experienced” vet.

I assured him I would do my best, and looking at the patient it was clear that his description was not an understatement. With the cow’s ribs starting to show, sunken eyes and a generally depressed appearance, my immediate thought was some sort of chronic gut condition. We encouraged her into the cattle crush and the examination began in a routine fashion from the back left flank. Plenty of gut sounds, temperature normal, no evidence of diarrhoea, heart and lungs

clear and healthy. Moving forward, there was nothing to see in her mouth, ears or eyes, and I continued the examination around to her right side back to her tail end. Nothing.

I started to think that maybe she had a rare cancer, dragging the condition off her as it grew. I pushed on, literally, with gloved arm into the rectum and conducted a thorough examination of her abdominal contents. No sign of anything that would explain her loss of body condition. No diagnosis as yet, and with the farmer hovering behind me grumbling and muttering, I began to get the sinking feeling that I may have to face the shame of calling back to the surgery for help. There was still one thing to check though and as I walked back to the vehicle to get the mouth gag, I felt I had the answer. With her head restrained and jaw agape, I felt confident that I would find a wound or abscess in deep that would account for her poor condition, and redeem myself in the eyes of

the farmer who by now was standing with arms folded and a face to match. I found nothing but a return of the sinking feeling.

As the farmer turned away in disgust, I plunged my arm in desperation as far as it would go down the cow’s throat and touched something hard. With a little more effort, I managed to grasp the object and presto!

In my hand was a whole lemon that had wedged itself halfway down her gullet. Once released, the patient immediately went to the water trough, took in a huge draught then proceeded to the bale of hay which she was still devouring as I drove off, the lemon tree overhanging the paddock fence diminishing in my rear-view mirror.

IN A TIME of rising mental health concerns in young people, social media has been linked with increased distress in children under 14 years. New data has revealed international trends that link social media use to a decrease in children’s mental wellbeing.

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard recently convened an expert group to provide advice for parents in response to this data. Their recommendations include limiting social media access for children under 14 years, monitoring and supporting children as they begin using social media, and restricting usage time until healthy habits are formed.

Dr Gerrard emphasised the need for a balanced approach. While recognising that social media could provide some social connection for isolated children, he stressed the importance of age-appropriate restrictions to protect young people’s health and wellbeing.

“Children under 14 years may not be equipped with the emotional maturity to deal with its complexity,” Dr Gerrard said of social media.

The recommendations highlight the vital role parents play in mitigating the risks associated with social media.

If parents choose to allow their children access to social media, there are many actions they can take to di-

minish (although not remove) the potential risk. These include ensuring access only occurs within shared areas of the house, regularly discussing online safety and any concerns with children, and consistently monitoring usage and screen time.

Parents concerned about their child’s social media use can access additional resources through the eSafety Commissioner’s website. This website contains a wealth of resources for parents and educators regarding social media usage and combating potential problems.

Queensland Health has also released new resources for parents as a part of its public health initiative, recognising the impact that social media is having on children’s health and wellbeing.

If parents have immediate concerns about their child’s safe technology use, they can also direct their children to the Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800) or visit the eHeadspace website.

Happy trails An upgrade of the 14 km Trail 7 Yurol Trail linking Lake Macdonald to Pomona via Yurol State Forest and Tewantin National Park is underway. Noosa Council has enlisted the expertise of Sunshine Civil Solutions and Trailworks, while collaborating with National Parks and the Kabi Kabi community on this 14 km trail upgrade.

Going to the chapel Work has now finished on renewal of the wedding chapel in the Noosa Botanic Gardens at Lake Macdonald.

The new chapel features a new courtyard pavement and installation of a new gazebo and arbour walk. May it be used to herald the start of many happy marriages.

Market wrap-up with Sirah THE AUSTRALIAN property market remains robust, with CoreLogic’s Home Value Index (HVI) increasing by 0.8% in May – its largest monthly gain since last October and marking 16 consecutive months of growth. Mid-sized capitals led these advances, with notable increases in Perth (2.0%), Adelaide (1.8%), and Brisbane (1.4%), each city adding over $12,000 to their median dwelling values.

Tim Lawless, CoreLogic’s research director, attributes these varying growth rates to significantly low supply

levels. Perth’s and Adelaide’s property listings are more than 40% below the five-year average, with Brisbane’s listings 34% under, fuelling price surges as new listings quickly meet eager buyers. Conversely, Hobart shows an opposite trend, with property listings 41% above the average, indicating a cooler market with lower demand, a downturn in sales and highlighting the impact of supply and demand.

A notable shift occurred in May as Brisbane overtook Canberra, recording the second-highest median dwelling

value among the capitals – a ranking Brisbane has not held since 1997. Furthermore, Brisbane’s housing values have surpassed those in Melbourne for the first time since June 2008, a remarkable shift from the pre-pandemic era when Melbourne’s median was substantially higher. With our close proximity to Brisbane, the flow-through effect of this shift on our market is promising.

Sydney’s market recovery is also noteworthy, with dwelling values rebounding to previous record highs of January 2022 after a

significant -12.4% drop postpeak. This recovery is part of a broader trend where the more affordable market segments show stronger growth conditions, reflecting the shift in demand towards middle- and lower-priced properties due to affordability constraints and reduced borrowing capacity.
