ONCE upon a time, in a lovely little town called Cooroy, there was a wonderful group of Christmas elves who worked for months and months every year to put together a magical community celebration called Christmas in Cooroy!

Christmas in Cooroy is right at the top of the Christmas Tree in terms of festive season celebrations. Attracting over 10,000 people, this event has the biggest program of FREE activities on offer! One of the highlights is the Bendigo Bank Street Parade and the theme this year is “Fairy Tales & Legends”. The organising committee has been hard at work over the last few months but this week had a bit of fun testing out some costume ideas.

“The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a big drawcard with around 30 floats decorated in all sorts of imaginative ways. There are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds and people of all ages are just amazed at how great the floats look. Christmas in Cooroy is such an amazing event and so much goes into organising it, we couldn’t afford to do it without sponsors like Cooroy Community Bank Branch,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor.

“We are always pleased to be involved with Christmas in Cooroy as it’s so much

fun. But the reason we continue to be major sponsors is that it gives so much benefit for the community. It is a showcase of great community spirit with everyone working together to produce something quite special,” said Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards.

Christmas in Cooroy is on Saturday 5 December from 4pm and you can get the full program and all the information at www.christmasincooroy.com.au. If you’d like to be in the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, entry forms are also available on the website.

Entry is free for community groups and $30 for businesses.

Council has named Cooroy’s Straker Drive park Fenwick Park, in a tribute to the Fenwick family which has a long history with the local area.

COUNCIL has named a Cooroy park Fenwick Park in a tribute to a wellknown local family.

50 family members and long-time friends gathered in the Straker Drive park for the dedication.

Senior family member Betty Sivyer (granddaughter of Elizabeth McLean) cut the ribbon and her daughter Linda spoke of the family’s history with the area.

Cr Tony Wellington, who officiated the dedication, said: “The naming of Fenwick Park provides an ongoing reminder that we owe our gratitude to those who came before us. It is right and proper that the Fenwick family’s important contribution be recognised in this way.”

A Fenwick family representative contacted council in the hope of seeing the family’s contribution to Cooroy, and its long history with the area, recognised with a place-naming.

The Fenwick family has a long connection with Cooroy having started the town’s first sawmill. The

four Fenwick brothers, George, William (Bill), Fred and Charles (Wally) moved to Cooroy in the early 1900’s from northern NSW. Their parents Robert and Helen Fenwick and one of their sisters Elizabeth McLean arrived soon after.

The brothers purchased land and, in partnership with Robert Morrish, commenced the first sawmill in Cooroy on the area now known as Mill Place.

Morrish sold his interest after a few years. As well as the mill, the Fenwicks owned a large parcel of land on which two houses were built close to the mill and were tenanted by mill employees.

The Fenwick brothers had timber hauled into their mill by bullock teams down the main street to the mill yard.

The area where the logs were stacked is in front of the present library.

The sawmill was steam driven for many years until the electricity was finally connected.

George Fenwick had

served in the Boer War and returned to Australia in 1900 and remained in the forces until 1903. George and his wife, Maud, moved to Cooroy where they lived in a house north of the sawmill but on the western side

of the railway line. This area today is Marrara Drive. George sold his interest in the sawmill after a number of years and he and his wife took up dairy farming.

Elizabeth McLean with her husband, Alec, and family settled in the Cooroy district with their three daughters in 1907 and they lived in a bark hut on the sawmill land where Elizabeth’s brothers had established the sawmill.

Fred Fenwick was a carpenter and built many of the early homes and shops in Cooroy.

Fred Fenwick built the Cooroy Memorial Hall and a number of the shops opposite the hall in Maple Street including the pharmacy block.

The Cooroy Ambulance Brigade was established in 1911 and it is noted from documentation in 1925 that William (Bill) Fenwick was a member of the Ambulance Brigade Committee.

Charles Fenwick married Ida Sivyer and had 3 chil-

dren. He and his family had a small cottage on the mill site, which he continued to live in until he passed away in 1973 at the age of 83.

His daughter Una married Wally Warner and they lived in the house next to the mill site which had been Fred Fenwick’s workshop.

This house was removed after they passed away, to make way for the development on Lower Mill Road.

The Fenwicks sold the mill to Blandford, Llewellyn, Smith and Carter in 1929. In 1941 the mill was acquired by Straker & Sons, who enlarged it and traded as the Cooroy Sawmilling Company. The mill was then owned by Northcoast Sawmills Pty Ltd, Quintex, and lastly by Boral Timber.

The sawmill ceased operations in 2000 when it was closed by the Qld Government.

Even though sold by the Fenwick brothers, the mill was known locally for many years as “Fenwick’s Mill”.

Pioneer of Cooroy district - Spencer Sivyer

DESCENDANTS of a Cooroy Pioneer Family gathered at the Cooroy Cemetery last month to dedicate a plaque on the grave of Spencer Sivyer, a true pioneer of early Australia and Queensland.

Spencer Sivyer was born in Peasmarsh, Sussex, England on 6 October 1833. He arrived in Sydney, Australia with his parents, James and Harriet Sivyer, at 5 years and 6 months of age.

Spencer grew up in the Sydney area and from records we find that he worked on the Hunter Valley Railway, the Great Southern Railway line from Campbelltown to Menangie between 1855 and 1857. Further records show that in 1859 he worked on the Great Northern Road between Morpeth and East Maitland and in 1860 on the Great Southern Road, Second District – Picton – Goulburn. During this time and in his earlier youth, Spencer gathered an invaluable knowledge of timbers.

In 1851 he married Elizabeth Bathgate at Chippendale, Sydney.

Spencer and Elizabeth had six (6) children.

Spencer moved to Maryborough, Queensland with his family in 1868. The Sivyer family lived in the Maryborough/Bundaberg areas for a few years and it is assumed that Spencer worked in the timber industry as there is documentation that in 1877, a tender was awarded to Spencer Sivyer for the supply of timber for the Mary River Bridge.

Spencer’s wife, Elizabeth died at Maryborough in 1880. In 1881, Spencer married Harriet Coram at Bundaberg.

Family notices in the Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser of 7 March 1882 tell of the marriage of Emmeline Sivyer to Arthur Hurley and state the bride’s father, Spencer Sivyer as Chief Inspector Bundaberg Railway Line.

Spencer then worked on Queensland Railway Lines and in particular the building of railway bridges for the Queensland Government as Inspector of Timbers. This all coincided with the railway lines from Mt Perry to eventually south of Brisbane at Pimpama. The children of this second marriage were born at different railway

The North Coast Railway Line played a significant part in the Sivyer family’s life as Spencer was very much involved in the building of the bridges on this line.

The final stages of the north coast line between Yandina and Cooroy was completed in 1891 and this coincides with the date which Spencer selected Portion 1657 at the Six Mile Creek, Tinbeerwah.

The Six Mile Creek in questions is the one between Cooroy and Tewantin at Tinbeerwah.

The 155 acres was bounded by the Creek, what is now Sivyer’s Road and the Gumboil Road.

The 1894-1895 Cooroy Post Office Directory lists these names who were farmers and graziers – Bell, Cramb, Demster, Lennox, Sivyer and Wilkin.

Spencer and Harriet Sivyer had 7 children.

Spencer and Harriet farmed at Tinbeerwah until his death in 1914 and then their sons, Walford, Stanley and Percy farmed there until 1953 when Stanley sold the farm and moved to Cooroy.

Spencer Sivyer died at Cooroy on 25 June 1914 and his wife, Harriet, died at Cooroy on 23 August 1934. Their son, Edgar Sivyer, was killed in an accident at the Fenwick Bros

Members of the first and second families including Spencer’s last living grandson, Ron Sivyer at 89 years of age, gathered at the Cemetery to dedicate the plaque to Spencer Sivyer, his wife and son.

They say Turnbull’s the white knight, the supreme politician, The winner of votes, a political magician.

Confusion reigns supreme, the political scene is a mess, One wonders if legislation is a matter of guess.

Parliament is the same, quite simply theatrical, Members guarding their seats, debates quite irrational.

They say that the lion may lie down with the sheep, Although I’m sure the sheep wouldn’t get much sleep!!

People have come out of all this feeling abused, Legislation is chaotic, and everyone’s confused.

Government seems just hit-or-miss, This country deserves much better than this.

IT’S on again with a much bigger venue this year. The Paper Angels Charity Christmas Card workshop will be at the Cooroy State School hall on Saturday, November 14. After last year’s event, the ‘Footprint Card Program’ was put in place at Nambour hospital. This program supplies all materials and equipment to make ‘keepsake’ cards with footprint, handprint and name cards for parents and grandparents of still born ‘Angel Babies’.

OWNING your own home is the great Australian Dream. It’s the dream you realise as you progress in life and certainly something to celebrate when you eventually pay off that mortgage! However, as we all know there are inevitable bumps in the road and sometimes even we have to be patient as our dream takes a little longer than expected to come true.

These additional funds can be raised by using the equity you have built up in your property. Equity can be achieved through several methods, one being

that you could have paid down or even paid off the original debt or the real estate market has seen a rise in property value above what you originally paid.

Equity is the gap between your level of debt and the value of your property. The value of your property needs to be established and most banks will engage a professional to access and report back to them on what they believe to be the value of your property in the current market.

If your property is undergoing significant changes, the bank may request the details in the form of building contracts or quotes for work to be competed. This information will enable the valuation agent to access the full value of the property when the changes have been completed hence achieving optimum equity position.

Once your equity position has been established via this valuation your bank will advise you the amount of equity you have available.

This could vary depending on your banks guidelines and the affordability of the extra funds against your current income and existing commitments.

It’s then a matter of additional funds either being added onto your current loan or (if it suits your needs) establishing a separate loan. A separate loan could be taken over a shorter time frame then your existing debt, which would repay the debt earlier and bring you back on track as you progress through to owning your own home and realising that Australian Dream.

Closures at Cooroy southern interchange as work ramps up TEMPORARY ramp closures at the Cooroy southern interchange are now in place as part of works for the $490 million Bruce Highway - Cooroy to Curra (Section A: Cooroy southern interchange to Sankeys Road) project.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads advises that overnight, northbound motorists exiting the Bruce Highway to Cooroy will be diverted via a temporary off-ramp on Holts Road, about 350m south of the existing offramp. This arrangement will be in place until early 2016.

Early next month, the northbound onramp will close for approximately two months. During this period, motorists entering the Bruce Highway northbound from Cooroy will be diverted via a temporary on-ramp on Holts Road.

CARA town meeting on roads and traffic CARA is planning a town meeting for later in the year (date TBA) where state members, interested councillors, town planners, and traffic engineers will be invited to address a meeting to explain the various divisions of responsibilities on roads and traffic issues and listen to residents’ concerns.

A section of Myall Street will close temporarily in October to allow for works on the new roundabout. Traffic for Nandroya Road and the Bruce Highway southbound will be detoured via a temporary side track that can be accessed from the Cooroy southern interchange connection road.

Night works will be required throughout September and October around the Cooroy southern interchange between 8pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday, including barrier, signage and lighting installation, asphalt works and line marking. Nearby residents may experience increased noise and lighting associated with these works.

The Section A project is expected to be completed by late 2016, weather permitting.

Paul Bone joins Cooroy Lower Mill Board (CLMB) THE Cooroy Lower Mill Board is proud to announce that Paul Bone has re-joined the board.

Paul a well known local figure was one of the original members of the Cooroy Task Force when

the Boral Mill closed in 2001 with the loss of 90 jobs. Paul worked tirelessly on the project to bring the Mill Site into the ownership of Council for our community and we now enjoy the library as

well as the green space and the Boiler, Hopper and Kiln as a result. The Woodworkers machines were subsequently moved into the Kiln with modifications done beforehand. Paul also

drove the project to create the streetscape which has brought new life to our streets.

Imminent retirement from his law practice has again turned Paul’s interest to community work. We

welcome Paul to our board and look forward to his energy and perspectives as we go forward with the Butter Factory project.

The day robots took over COOROY State School students continue to go high-tech.

Last week, they found a great way to thank one of their biggest supporters and promote their highly anticipated Showcase Week at Cooroy Memorial Hall at the same time.

For the past six years, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has provided thousands of Cooroy State School students the opportunity to develop their technology skills by building their own robot.

It’s all made possible through the school’s heralded Lego Education Robotics Program.

Cooroy State School’s, Melissa Lafferty was joined by Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards at a presentation in the hall as they watched the kids put the robots through their paces.

Melissa said the number of posters on show only strengthens the value the students place on the program provided by the bank.

“Our Robotics Program is an ideal way to captivate young minds

representatives who have made this program possible,” she said. The program began in 2009, and sees groups of students working collaboratively on programming basic commands for P-3 (the Bee-Bots and We-Do’s), right through to challenging science or mathsbased problems with open-ended solutions for Year 6 and 7 students.

grammed to carry out specific commands as evidenced this week As one of the only programs of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy State School knows the school is onto a good thing.

Noosa Show shines despite the rain

Frank Pardon and funny man, Jamie Dunn at the Noosa Country Show THE 106th annual Noosa Country Show took place under grey skies and on slightly damp ground, but locals showed up in numbers and went home happy. Organisers of this year’s show said there was something for everyone.

Few country shows have stood the test of time as well as Noosa and the Pomona showground is still the hub of the community, in the town where Noosa Shire was originally formed so many years ago.

For two full days, the main arena was full of

horses and activity with people of all ages showing off what they have. Riders from all over regional Queensland came to enter with some as young as 5 years old.

As with all good shows there was sideshow alley, rides of all kinds and food as far as the eye could see.

A massive selection of different goodies meant that show goers were spoiled for choice. While the general numbers were down a little from 2014 because of the rain, show goers were happy and right into the

spirit of the two day celebration.

It remains one of Queensland’s premier traditional country shows and took this year to honour the 100th year of ANZAC. The Grand Parade on both days featured the 2nd and 5th Lighthorse Brigades, Noosa Navy Cadets, Pomona Museum giving our community one of its last opportunities commemorate the centenary milestone.

Around the grounds there was plenty of artwork, baked goods, veg-

etables and fruit, flowers, jams, photographs, plants and more. 18 sections submitting for judging, including horses, flowers and fruit and vegetables in categories for kids and adults there was massive variety throughout the pavilion.

Twenty axe men reminded everyone why country shows are so great and exhibitors included an animal nursery, Big Bang Education Science Show and good old fashioned sheep shearing. A reptile awareness show, arts workshop and aboriginal weapons making demonstration were all very popular as well. Noosa Shire Council hosted an excellent and informative marquee with the Mobile Library on site for both days.

said she was delighted with the show and the efforts of so few for so many over the two days.

“We’re a new committee and a small one at that, but we knew we’re thrilled with the program we were able to assemble. I really want to thank this year’s committee for their incredible efforts, allowing us to showcase the very best of Noosa Country to so many,” Perene said.

“We have to thank our many sponsors with Noosa Council, Geoff Edwards and the team at Bendigo Bank, Pomona Caravan Park and Nielsen’s Quality Gravels, Claytons Towing, Cronin’s Excavations to name just a few. Events like these simply don’t happen without this sort of support and we’re very grateful,” Perene added.

AN upgrade to one of Eumundi’s favourite playgrounds and picnic spots has been tested out by eager students from the local primary school today after being opened by Sunshine Coast Council.

The stage one upgrade of Dick Caplick Park included a playground upgrade,new pathways and seating, important drainage work, provision for future lighting , refurbishment to the popular play train, and the upgrade of the soft-fall zone to comply with safety standards.

Children who visit the park, in the town’s main street, can now have fun on the new “Revo” giant spinning wheel, the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, and a new Roplay climbing ball, while the fi-

nal touches are being put on a unique “rickety” play bridge, suspended between the fig trees.

Council will now complete planning and design for stage two landscape construction works which will be completed during 2016-17 financial year.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson described Dick Caplick Park as a significant open space asset for both locals and visitors.

“The new playground features will encourage many more people, especially kids, to use this wonderful park,” Cr Rogerson said.

“I would like to publicly acknowledge and give my personal thanks to the Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA), the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) and the

Cooroora Woodworkers for their extremely valuable contributions.”

Funding for the project also came from Council’s Capital Works Program and the Divisions 9 and 10 discretionary allocations.

Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson said Dick Caplick Park would continue to be improved over several years.

“This is a lovely part of Eumundi already enjoyed by hundreds of families each week,” Cr Robinson said. “I’m sure that with the new improvements, we are going to see more and more people coming here to Dick Caplick Park to enjoy what has been created for them.

“Looking at the kids playing here today, you can already tell it’s going to be very popular.”

Happy 105th birthday Eileen Schabe EILEEN SCHABE was born in Bundaberg on 17th September, 1910. She was one of 10 children and only Eileen and two sisters are still living (their ages being 85 and 86). Eileen met her husband in Monto where she was a nurse in a doctor’s surgery and they were married in 1939. They moved to Callide Valley in 1940 and bought a farming property on the Lawgi Plateau where they had stud dairy cattle pigs and beef cattle and later, poultry. Their only child, a daughter, was born in 1944.

Eileen was an active member of the CWA and was also self taught in making and decorating birthday and wedding cakes. She was a very gifted dressmaker and designed ball gowns. She liked gardening and was very good at playing the mouth organ.

In 1970 Eileen and her husband sold their property and retired to Biloela where a road was named after them – Schabe’s Road. At 76 years of age Eileen lost her husband and she stayed on in Biloela and only gave up driving her Holden Statesman V8 at the age of 96.

Eileen moved into Carramar in 2009.Eileen’s secret to her good health is country living where they grew their own meat, eggs and vegetables and having her tablespoon of organic vinegar and honey in a glass of warm water every morning before breakfast.

THE Indian myna bird is fast becoming Australia’s number one feral enemy!

The myna bird has been declared the second greatest threat to native birds after land clearing. It’s currently spreading through eastern Australia, yet in some areas its arrival is so recent that unknowing residents welcome it into their backyards and encourage it to feed alongside native birds. This extremely aggressive bird chases out native birds and small tree dwelling marsupials such as feather-tailed gliders.

The Common Myna is sometimes confused with the slightly larger Noisy Miner. Although both species have similar common names, the Noisy Miner is actually a native honeyeater. Both have yellow bills, legs and bare eye skin, but the Common Myna is brown with a black head and in flight it shows large white wing patches.

The Noisy Miner is mostly grey.

The Indian myna has been spotted in Cooroy. If you notice them in your backyard you can contact Noosa Council as they have a trapping programme in place. Help preserve our native animals.

Stephanie moved to the area for a sea change after spending the last 30 years in the Moreton Bay area. She has many year’s experience working in both large and small retail nurseries.

Stephanie says she loves her job. She holds a Diploma of Horticulture and has a lifelong passion for gardening and flora of all kinds.

“I specialise in fruit/vegie and herb growing, organic growing and permaculture as well as bio-dynamics,” says Stphanie.

“Currently, the Nursery team and I are working on extending our range of plants, as well as making our nursery more interesting and pleasing to visit. I am really enjoying meeting all the customers at Sauers and getting to know all the challenges and opportunities of growing a garden in this region,” she said.

“We are here to help, so if you need advice on plant selection, garden preparation, dealing with pests and diseases or garden design we would love to help. We offer a wide range of plants but if you can’t see what you want, just ask and we will search our data banks and contacts to try and get the plant you’re after.”

ANNIE’S Kitchen Cooroy (formerly Kiku) opened this month with the new manager and chef Annie Goodwyn at the

helm.

Annie has had extensive cooking experience aboard an international fishing trawler for six years

travelling the Red Sea, Arabia, New Zealand and then with a large WA Catering company for 10 years, IGA Cooroy three years and as an employee for the previous owner of Kiku Cooroy for two years.

Cleaning, repairs, painting and new signage of the premises in Cedar Street, Cooroy (two doors down from Eagle Boys) has been finalised and Annie is looking forward to taking over the reins.

The takeaway will still be largely Asian cuisine with scrumptious Thai, Malaysian and Chinese dishes on the menu. All meals are prepared fresh on site and shortly Annie’s Kitchen will be offering daily specials.

The menu includes soups, laksa, snacks and entrees, stir frys, noodle boxes, favourites and red or green curries, so call in and grab some fresh Asian Take Away. Opening hours are 11.30am to 2pm, 4.30pm to 7.30pm Tuesday to Sunday with a rest for Annie on Mondays.

THE SES, assisted by the Rural Fire Service, held a Fundraiser to assist local Ambulance Officer, Suzette Daikin, who lost her home in a fire at Black Mountain in August this year.

The Fundraiser, which consisted of a sausage sizzle and a raffle, was held outside the Cooroy IGA on Friday 18 September. Thank you to Councillor Tony Wellington and Judy Ditter for their generous donation of beautiful books, to

Lakeridge Health and Beauty, the Camphor Laurel Initiative, the Cooroora Woodworkers, and to Carol Watkins, clayworker, who all donated goods for the five prizes on offer.

The Fundraiser was a huge success with $468.00 raised by the sausage sizzle, and $1148 raised by the raffle. The money has been deposited in the Cooroy Bendigo Bank. Thank you Cooroy for your support and generosity.

Cent sale for cancer research CATHY Breed is holding a cent sale on October 31 to raise funds for cancer research.

Cathy will be participating in ‘The Walk to end Women’s Cancer’, a 60km walk held over 2 days on the 24th & 25th of October. Participants must raise a minimum of $2000 which goes to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute to support ground breaking critical cancer research.

Last year the walk raised in excess of $200,000.

ON 10 October this year the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club will celebrate 50 years of providing a safe environment for the young (and not so young) horse riders of the community to learn and develop skills in horsemanship and camaraderie.

Everyone is invited to the celebrations - past and current members, their families and friends, and members of the community are invited to take part in the celebrations at the Pony Club Grounds located in Mary River Road Cooroy.

The event will commence at 3pm with riding demonstrations, a history display and afternoon tea. This will be followed by some formalities and a campfire dinner (tickets on sale now). Overnight camping will be available, followed by breakfast on Sunday morning.

“There have been a lot of changes in Pony Club since Cooroy club started in the mid 60s” says President Vicki Knights (who came up thorough the pony club ranks in Brisbane as an adolescent and has been involved in Cooroy Club since 1995).

“We have been fortunate to reconnect with many past members and learn a lot about the history, not only of our Club, but Pony Club in general. A lot of this history will be on display on the day. We are expecting visitors from far and wide so there is sure to be a lot of reminiscing on 10 October”.

news Kelsey gets a taste for the big time show biz!

ROB Mills, Rhonda Burchmore and John Wood are just some of the Australian entertainment legends who have been sharing their wisdom with aspiring performers.

Cooroy’s Kelsey Hannah was one of the young entertainers selected for the prestigious Australian Musical Theatre Workshops hosted by Harvest Rain.

The 13-year-old Dance Form student was thrilled to receive the news and has been developing her musical theatre skills over the school break.

“Nothing gives me more joy than getting up on stage and performing in front of a crowd.” Kelsey adds.

Kelsey said just 100 children were chosen to participate in the workshops nation-wide.

“The meets and greets were the best and we got to have a question and answer with the mentors,” she said. Dancing, singing and acting are all second nature to this triple threat who has been on the stage and in front of the camera since she started walking.

“The workshops have

been really fun. Meeting so many amazing local and internationally recognised performers has been really exciting.”

Kelsey says she would love to see herself in a touring show like ‘Wicked’ or ‘Hairspray’ but in the meantime would like to continue to grab every opportunity that comes her way such as workshops like this.

Donna Hannah (Kelsey’s mum) puts it like this,

“We’re just coming along for the ride. You never know what’ll happen.”

Kelseys week is always jam packed with dance classes 5 days a week at Dance Form Cooroy.

Reading, writing and staying inspired THE Noosa District State High School Junior Secondary campus students had the opportunity to work with actor, film maker and award-winning children’s and teens author Tristan Bancks last week.

Tristan’s books include the My Life series, Mac Slater Coolhunter and Two Wolves.

Two Wolves was shortlisted for the 2015 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award.

Tristan spoke to the junior students about the writing process, and how it takes many years to draft a novel and short story.

He shared his tips for writing including keeping journals, looking for inspiration in ‘everyday’ events and setting aside time each day to write.

The students embraced Tristan’s ideas, especially his philosophy of writing, reading and staying inspired, whilst remembering that writing involves rewriting!

Students had the chance to create different endings to his new novel, with some great ideas shared.

Tristan and the students embraced the Junior Secondary campus philosophy of ‘FLYING’, with a fun filled day, inspiring the students to keep reading and writing.

Year 9 student Miles Maxwell-Jones gearing up for his radio debut NDSHS Year 9 SOSE students spent this term learning about the social, economic and environmental impacts of globalisation, researching and present to the class the negative impacts a multinational corporation has on the world.

Students critically examined the unethical and damaging practices undertaken by well-known brands such as Nike and Lindt and Cadbury chocolate.

Year 9 student Luke Cook examined the impact Nike has on the environment, highlighting the harmful effect the shoe’s ingredients have and the potential risk they pose to the people and animals that live within the vicinity they are made.

Kiarra Bensley focused on the massive discrepancy in money paid to the sweatshop workers in the Nike factories compared to the retail price of Nike shoes sold in Australia.

Ruby Hall looked at the damage chocolate production has on the African children who harvest the cocoa beans in the Ivory Coast.

Ruby Hall and Miles Maxwell-Jones were selected to represent their SOSE class on a Noosa 101.3 FM radio segment focused on the topic of globalisation.

The students now realise the enormity of the power they have with the choices made at the cash register through each dollar spent.

Speakers explore Noosa’s past, present and future NOOSA residents are in for an absolute treat when a high-calibre cadre of eminent speakers – all experts in their respective field – present a program of talks that explore the theme of Past, Present and Future at Pomona on Saturday 24 October.

Hosted by the Noosa Museum, the event aims to communicate the values of the past, negotiate the values of the present and help identify things that will be important to the shire’s future. The Past Present and Future Heritage Forum explores the Indigenous relationship with the land, the origins of European settlement locally, a brief history of the area and the region’s environmental values.

The natural resource manager at Noosa Landcare, Phil Moran, will be master of ceremonies, as well as giving a talk on the history of the organisation.

Among keynote speakers is Dr Bill Metcalf, of Griffith University’s Research School. Dr. Metcalf is one of the foremost scholars on intentional communities worldwide. His talk will examine the Protestant Unity Movement, which in the late 1880s

began commune farming in the area of Jampot Creek Road and Skyring Creek.

Dr Stephen Nichols, CH Unit DATSIP, will provide an update on Australian Archaeology. Dr Elaine Brown will provide a presentation from her research about the history of Rev. Edward Fuller and the Lake Weyba Aboriginal Mission. Noosa Shire’s heritage librarian Ms Jane Harding, will provide a background to the concept and aspects of the Noosa Library WWl project. Queensland Police Museum Curator Ms Lisa Jones will talk about policing around Tewantin and Pomona.

Between presentations, Ms Gail Robinson will provide a poetic response to the subject of each session.

THE Pomona Writer’s Group is a diverse collection of individuals. Individuals who have different backgrounds, different interests, different work histories and a mix of young and young at heart.

The main reason the group meet each week is to produce creative writing. The writing may be a poem, a short story, a song or a topical tale. It could be biographical, a work of fiction or an anecdotal, humorous account of a specific event.

What do we write about? Each week the group are given a topic to write a short story. There is a 500 word limit as the following week each participant reads their story to the group. How do we start to write? We start by writing from the heart. What does writing from the heart mean?

It means as a writer you are the best person to describe what has happened in your life, who or what has influenced your actions and or your thoughts.

Where do we begin? We begin by thinking of words, actions, events, conversations that relate to the week’s topic. It may be something that happened yesterday, last year or many years ago.

It maybe someone you met at work, at school, at home or while shopping. It could be something completely made up. No story is ever criticised.

Everyone simply writes what they feel, think or relate to. No one’s story is ever the same.

During the weekly session the group also do 5 minute writing exercises. Two or three words are chosen randomly from pages in a dictionary. The exercise is to write a few paragraphs without editing or changing what has been written.

The essence of Pomona Creative Writing is to enjoy the company of like-minded people whose passion is to write. Maybe some would like to write a book, a play, a film or a collection of poetry. Maybe some simply enjoy writing the weekly short stories. Whatever the reason everyone is welcome to attend to share ideas about writing.

Shoulder pain - do you have rotator cuff dysfunction??

THE shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints in the body. This is due to the fact that the socket part of the ball and socket joint is quite shallow. This also makes the joint more unstable and so it relies on muscular control to keep the head of the arm (humerus) centred in the socket. The group of muscles primarily responsible for this task is referred to as the rotator cuff muscles.

The rotator cuff is the name given to 4 muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor) which originate from the shoulder blade (scapula) and insert onto the upper arm bone (humerus). The accurate control of the shoulder joint relies on these 4 muscles working together in a co-ordinated fashion. As well as contributing to the stability of the shoulder joint, the rotator cuff muscles assist with elevation and rotation of the arm.

Due to the repetitive way in which we use our arms, these muscles and their tendons (join the muscle to

the bone) are commonly injured and become a source of pain. The two common issues that we see in a physiotherapy clinic related to the rotator cuff is a rotator cuff tear or degeneration of rotator cuff tendons (tendinopathy).

A rotator cuff tear can occur suddenly from excessive force being placed through the muscle. This may occur from lifting a heavy object, falling onto an outstretched hand, forceful pulling, pushing or throwing. Sometimes rotator cuff tears develop over time due to repetitive movements or activities which place strain on the muscle or tendon. This can lead to a gradual weakening and degeneration of the muscle which eventually starts to tear. These types of tears are more common in an older population.

When an acute rotator cuff tear occurs, it is often difficult to lift the arm and there is significant pain which may make it difficult to sleep at night Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy is damage to

the tendon which can result in micro-tears and associated inflammation. If untreated, rotator cuff tendinopathy can lead to partial or full thickness tears of the rotator cuff.

Tendinopathy is caused from overuse or from pinching the tendons (impingement). This impingement can be due to physical characteristics such as a hooked end of the shoulder (scapula bone) which narrows the area that the rotator cuff tendons have to move through, or other external issues such as muscle imbalances.

What Can I Do To Treat This?

Physiotherapists are trained to diagnose the source of your shoulder pain through various testing procedures. If we feel that it is necessary, we may refer you to your GP for further investigations such as an ultrasound scan or an Xray to help determine the cause of your symptoms. In most cases, shoulder pain responds extremely well to physiotherapy. Physiotherapy will involve an as-

sessment of your condition and what factors may have caused the problem in the first place. Treatment techniques will be implemented based on our findings, but may include shoulder mobilisation, soft tissue releases, strapping tape, ultrasound therapy, stretches, shoulder blade control exercises and rotator cuff strengthening exercises. Modifications to activities will also be discussed. In severe cases, referral to an orthopaedic surgeon may be required.

news Preparing your child for their first Acupuncture visit

YOU’VE decided to make an appointment for your child for an Acupuncture treatment and now you’re wondering what you’re going to tell them about their initial visit. In order to help explain to your child what is involved with an acupuncture treatment we’ve got a few pointers to help you out.

Be honest with your child about what the visit is for. If your child is old enough to understand what is going on with their body, explain to them why they are coming in for an acupuncture visit. Let them know you’ll be discussing their problem with the acupuncturist.

Tell them about acupuncture. Acpuncture helps the body heal itself. Our bodies are designed with great healing powers, but sometimes bodies need a little help to heal and that’s what acupuncture does. It also helps the body heal faster. The acupuncturist is a like a detective that is searching for the root cause of illness and then uses special spots called acupuncture points to begin the healing process. Not even the greatest surgeon can heal a cut, only the body can.

Avoid words like pinch, prick, pokey, poke, pins or needles. These words sound scary and may cause your child to be afraid of acupuncture.

Tell them the acupuncturist does ‘taps’. At our clinic, we call acupuncture for kids “taps” because the acupuncturist will do a lot of gentle finger tapping and rubbing to prepare the acupuncture point.

The needles are swiftly tapped in and, for kids under age 8, immediately removed.

Don’t lie to them if they ask if it hurts. When they are tapped in there is little to no discomfort during the procedure. They might feel a tiny amount of discomfort, but most don’t. Hundreds of thousands of kids get acupuncture every year because it helps them feel better.

Help them to be brave! Sometimes bringing a favourite toy, stuffed animal or blanket gives them comfort if they are feeling scared or apprehensive. Some kids dress up in costume on their first visit. We’ve seen pirates, Princesses, and Super Heroes to name a few.

If they don’t want to do needles, we have other options. Sometimes even the bravest kids don’t want to try taps right away. That’s alright, we have other non-needle techniques we can use that have a similar therapeutic effect as acupuncture. Your child will never be forced to do taps or anything else against their wishes, but it is our sincere hope that they will cooperate with us during their treatment.

Decide ahead of time if you’re going to offer a reward for trying taps. It’s their choice if they want to try taps, but sometimes a little motivation helps.

Rewards have worked quite well for many parents to encourage their kids try it. If you plan to offer a reward, figure out what you’ll offer ahead of time so you’re not caught off guard, but be ready to follow through. You may want to keep it a secret and use it as a last resort or it may work better to tell them about it ahead of time.

We have stickers at the clinic for kids who come in for treatments, so they’ll get a little reward no matter what. DESCRIBING a game of Australian football can be difficult. The lack of an offside rule and the quick speed of the ball tends to produce a spectacle of complete chaos.

But, millions of Aussies love it and one of our local clubs has been producing great footballers for 42 years.

The Pomona/Cooroy & District Australian Football Club continue to be a proud club in our community and this season hasn’t been any different. The Demons held their club presentation day last weekend and the famous blue and yellow colours were out in force.

Club Registrar, Sue Hobbs says it’s the fun amongst the player, families and supporters and development of younger grades that feeds the club’s success.

“We like to think we’re one of the friendliest clubs around. So many families have come to play here and have stayed. We provide a fan-focussed atmosphere here - it’s part of our Demons culture.

I think that’s what makes a successful footy club and that’s what made 2015 such a great season for us,” Sue said.

“Our junior teams from under 6’s through to under 13’s had a lot of fun and our seniors’ and entertaining and slightly slower paced Masters’ team meant we had great representation in our regional competition. Our U13 made it to the grand final,” she added.

The Demons, like all clubs needed help to keep things rolling by attracting sponsors to the club, and in 2015 they welcomed their newest one in the form of Bendigo Bank. Sue and some of the 2015 committee and players welcomed Pomona and Cooroy manager Geoff Edwards to training last week to spend time with those who make the

magic happen. “We’re extremely grateful to Geoff and his team at Bendigo Bank for sponsoring us in 2015. Their contribution has assisted us in providing up to date training and game day equipment for our teams. It’s also great to be sponsored by those who are as passionate about our community as we are and give so much back,” Sue added. Geoff Edwards said he sees the sponsorship of the Demons as a great fit.

“I’ve had a blast getting to know the Demons club members this season. From the playing fields to the clubhouse and everywhere in between, the club is filled with energy and pride. We see this sponsorship as a great way to support the club now and in the seasons ahead,” Geoff said.

ANOTHER successful season has come to an end for Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club.

President, Doug Toms, took time to thank the club faithful and sponsors at their presentation day last weekend.

“Like most clubs, our season began with our sign on day in February and our wonderful committee has really put in the hard yards for us in 2015. I’m really proud of the improvement of so many of our players – that’s the greatest reward of all,” Doug said.

“The enthusiasm of our coaches, managers and volunteers has provided so much benefit to our players and we’re very grateful for all they’ve done,” he added.

Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards was warmly welcomed and thanked for his support. Applause soon broke out after Geoff announced the bank would again support the club again in 2016, ensuring junior rugby will continue to be played in our Noosa Hinterland community.

Cutters all the way

WE have come to the end of the footy season, but wow, what a year, making it all the way to the Grandfinals. Had the most amazing game and gave all they had.

Throughout the year, the cutters have bonded together, both players, families and friends to become the fantastic club that it is today. Through struggles of no training grounds due to no lights, to players working away or injuries, we still managed to make the Grandfinals of our division (Pool B) and came Runner-Up. This is such an honour. The boys played hard, and put their best foot forward, but unfortunately lost to Caloundra by only 2 points. Coach – Phil Andersen was very proud

of his team and being a player himself was so glad that they made it to the finals.

Even though the footy season has finished, we still get together for a catch up on a Friday night at the Cutters Country Kitchen, located at the Cooran Rugby League Grounds.

sport Wrap up from Russia IMPACT Boxing Academy’s Sam Cameron-Hands has returned from Russia after competing in the World’s biggest junior boxing competition to ever be held. These championships attracted 457 boxers from 47 different countries & was contested over 9 days.

Unfortunately for Sam he drew one of the competition favourites from the Czech Republic in his first round for the competition. Sam more than held his own against one of the best boxers in the world to eventually be beaten via a split points decision.

“This was a bout that could have easily gone either way. There was nothing in it & both boys showed great skill & determination. Sam fought his heart out & can hold his head high.

He has represented his country on the World stage against one of the World’s best & has done extremely well against him. I am so proud of him & what he has achieved at such a young age & I know that this experience is just a stepping stone towards the bigger picture (Commonwealth Games 2018 & Olympic Games 2020).

We would like to thank everyone for their support with Sam’s “Road to Russia campaign especially our good friends at Ri-Con Contractors & Hinteractive Physio,” coach Mark Evans said.

Once the boxers are eliminated from the competition the countries get together & organise a daily training/ sparring session.

The experience gained from these sessions is invaluable. Sam was privileged enough to spar with boxers from Korea, China, Japan, Morocco, Philippines, England, Scotland & Ireland. Training with these countries & having to adapt to the different styles of training was probably the greatest experience that Sam could have had whilst in Russia.

The International experience will continue for Sam as he now starts his preparation towards his trip to Germany on October 15. Sam has been selected to represent Queensland to compete in Germany. The Queensland team will compete in three tournaments over a 10 day period.
