My spring was badly sprung DEAR Editor I am sorry, this poem is perhaps a bit late, It’s running a bit close to the required ‘put-in-by’ date, But I’m afraid I’ve been rather busily confined, (I don’t mean confinement of the child bearing kind) But the sort of confinement the hospital provides, When there is something amiss with our delicate insides.

I’ve been poked at and prodded, rested and walked around at length, Tested for my weaknesses, and what’s left of my strength, Things have been stuck on to me, other things put inside, Pregnancy seems the only thing, left confidently untried, A rise in my blood pressure was clearly indicated.

(QANTAS and politics, justifiably get me agitated) Beta blocks and pacemakers, have much to do with the heart But I’m not quite sure whether it is with the stop or the start.

The volume of paperwork is truly astronomical, I don’t think it all deals, with matters anatomical.

The nurses are wonderful, so gentle, so calming, It’s difficult not to flirt with them, all are so charming.

But when I look back over those wonderful years, The happiness, the laughter, yes, the occasional tears, The achievements I have managed, the battles I have fought, Perhaps I have lived, much longer than I ought, So I will try to heed the advice, and moderate my pace, After all, life means living, it’s not a marathon race.

I can’t solve the world’s problems, all on my own, And other people’s worries are theirs and theirs alone.

I can only succeed on a daily basis, to live happily ever after, So I’ll aim to fill my world, with happiness, love, and laughter.

Rural roundup WITH growing interest in the emerging endeavours of “Country Noosa”, in coming editions we bring the first in a series of interviews with some of the folk working behind (and in front of) the scenes to get an idea on the possibilities our rural future may hold, including Dick Barnes, from the Noosa Country Forum, and Shane Stanley, the ambassador for Restaurant Australia and coowner of the Noosa Farmers Market.

To kick off, we asked Cr Sandy Bolton for an update on matters relating to Noosa’s rural communities. Cr Bolton is Chair of the Infrastructure and Services Committee in Council, and is also the official observer to Regional Development Australia SC, and Council representative on the SEQMayors Rural Task Force.

CR – So, how has the last 6 months been?

SB - “It has been an incredibly busy time and a lot of miles have travelled! I have been able to speak with or attend meetings with the majority of hinterland organisations, and catch up with residents, and it has been a real joy to see the rural communities excited about their endeavours” CR – Why is there so much talk about “Country Noosa”?

“As those who live here know, the rural areas have so much to offer, and can be shared to develop the local economy, and grow jobs. Noosa has the branding, location and natural attractions for increased rural tourism, and is a wonderful life-

style destination for those utilizing digital technology to run remote business. Personally, I believe the Noosa brand is opportunity for regenerative farming and it’s by products including culinary and agritourism – television has created demand for “paddock to plate” experiences which include farmstays and tours .The Regenerative Farming Film night held at the J had over 80 people in attendance, the 2nd largest in QLD to date, and the message was clear – chemical and pesticide free product and by products are in demand and growing.

CR – Is there anything going on that will help the rural communities to grow these opportunities?

SB – “The State Government has a focus on infrastructure to assist communities in the sectors of agriculture, tourism and the digital economy.

At the RegionsQ Forum held last month, the request from attendees included a call for improved rail services – not only for commuters but for visitors, tourists and outbound freight, the roll out of digital services, and the Bruce Highway upgrade. These would all be invaluable for the future of both the tourism and farming sectors in Noosa” “A number of requests have been submitted to Council. These include improved signage from the Bruce highway, with the Cooroy exit as the entry to Noosa and a proposed “Country Tourist Loop” through hinterland villages across to Boreen Point.

The showcasing and promotion of events to “mobile” travelers who follow a variety of “trails” would be supported through planning amendments to enable a broader range of accommodation options, and reduced “red tape” for farm stalls and “niche farms” are just some of efforts being made to assist.”

CR – Is there anywhere that information can be obtained for those that want to know more? “ There is a Field Day being hosted by Dick Barnes at his property on September 12 where local farmers and potential farmers can discuss a range of items. There is a proposal for a forum to develop a rural “cluster”, providing a united voice in which to look at the very best way to

move forward with a number of opportunities. Council over the next months will be commencing the community consultation phase in the drafting a strategy for Country Noosa, identifying what needs to be done over the next 3-5 years to achieve the aims of the rural communities. Otherwise just drop me a line with any queries, or to be included in the Country Noosa database.”

CR - Anything else that you feel readers would like to know?

“Lots! Community Consultation. It won’t be long until Council has its online polling/have your say through “Bang the Table”, and the New Democracy model for the “big” issues to complement the more traditional methods of postal surveys, email and community meetings. As well, a number of community organisations have been busy. There is the new NoosaVoice online about to be released, the Noosa Com-

munity web, and a proposed monthly platform at the Christian Outreach Centre. Plus, the avenues of Residents Associations, Chambers of Commerce and yes, a phone call or letter to Council or your Councillors. With so many avenues to have a say or ask a question, it has never been easier to obtain facts or call to attention any issue you may be concerned about” “The other is the capital works budget. There are a number of works scheduled for the hinterland which include flood mitigation and pathways, renewal projects including the Mill Place Boiler, Kookaburra Park amenities, and upgrades to the bike and pathways Pomona. OVER 110 passionate people had their say about the future of the Cooroy Butter Factory at a workshop held this month.

The event was designed to capture as many ideas as possible through a “world café” style workshop with enthusiastic participation by all attendees. Council is now seeking further community input.

Council’s Director of Community Services, Alan (Fox) Rogers said what we need now is to hear from those groups who could not attend last night - students, teachers, mums and dads, other arts, craft, heritage, music groups and community groups and other social enter-

prises- all those who may benefit in the future from having a wonderful venue and facility that the Cooroy Butter Factory could become with the right operational model.

“No ideas are off the table,” Mr Rogers said.

At the workshop, Councillor Tony Wellington and Mr Rogers dispelled any myths and clarified council’s position - which is not to close the Butter Factory but instead develop a better operating model that will create a more vibrant asset for the community.

Mr Rogers commented after the meeting “We really appreciate the time, energy and ideas that people contributed

at the workshop”.

“We were encouraged to think big and heard ideas about creating: a multi-use facility for arts and music; a place where local heritage is preserved; a ceramic centre of excellence and modelling the Butter Factory on other successful regional venues and more,” he said.

“This is an important community asset. Once we have gathered as many ideas as possible, we will evaluate and consider the options.

Seqwater investigates upgrade of Lake Macdonald SEQWATER is lowering the water level of Lake Macdonald at Noosa ahead of investigative works as part of the bulk water authority’s Dam Improvement Program.

The lake water level will be lowered to about half a metre below the current full supply level to enable the works to be completed.

Seqwater Chief Execu-

tive Officer Peter Dennis said the temporary lowering of the dam would not affect water security.

“The controlled releases of water required to achieve the lowering are not expected to have any environmental impacts. We have increased monitoring of the dam environment during the process and we encourage our dam

neighbours to get in touch if they become aware of any potential problems,” Mr Dennis said.

“We are lowering the water level by releasing water through the outlet valve as well as a number of temporary siphons installed on the spillway crest. We expect the water level will be lowered by mid-September, so investigations

can begin.”

Mr Dennis said the investigation work on the spillway at Lake Macdonald was expected to take about four weeks, subject to weather delays.

“Work on the spillway slabs will be conducted between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with the assistance of a mobile crane,” he said.

“We will be using cut-

ting tools and some machinery, so intermittent construction noise can be expected.

“We appreciate the patience of the local community as we undertake this essential work.”

Mr Dennis said the investigations would help inform the timing and scope of the planned Lake Macdonald dam upgrade.

IN August each year, Bendigo Bank branches across Queensland band together to host fundraising events for Care Flight as part of Chopper Awareness Month. This exciting annual event raises around $50,000 each year for Care Flight’s lifesaving community helicopter rescue service. Now we’re in September the money has been counted, and the Cooroy and Tewantin Community Bank branches have raised in excess of $1,000 for the cause. In Cooroy, well known customer service officer, Karl Doss found a way of giving personally to the cause, putting the fate his very impressive beard on the line.

Locals voted and made it count with a gold coin donation to one of six options of their choice. These ranged from a full bushman’s beard, mutton chops, decorat-

HAVE you noticed the sign saying Spiritual Church at the CWA Hall on Wednesday nights and wondered what that’s all about?

The Spiritualist Church is a gathering of people who are like minded in their beliefs of Spirits, Guardian Angels and Guides who are pursuing to be the best person they can be. Everyone is most welcome and you can participate as little or as much as you like.

The service consists of singing some hymns/songs - most are updated soft rock type songs that spread the message of Love, Acceptance and Positive Change. There is quite a selection, anything from Boney M’s “Rivers of Babylon” to Abba’s “I have a Dream”, with instruments available if you really are in the mood. Next we usually have a meditation where many receive messages from Spirit or just a chance to let your mind wind down and relax in a calming manner. There is healing for those who need it and you say a prayer or two. There is a visiting medium who will give a little talk first and then give any messages they receive to the relevant people.

During the last song, there is a free-will offering of which people give as little or as much as they desire, or nothing at all. This all goes to the renting and insurance of the meeting hall, and once a month to a different charity.

The Rev. Kathy McVann runs the Church service and is most welcoming. We often have people just wander in off the street wondering what we are all about and say they enjoy hearing the music and laughter coming from within. There is a different guest speaker each week who in their own unique ways will bring messages to the gathering. We’ve had everyone from drawing, art, music inspired psychics to drumming workshops and even one or two very well known Clairvoyants and Psychics.

Mainly, everyone is there for a common purpose - to enlighten ourselves with the Spirit in order to better our lives and relationships we have with the people amongst us. We are all psychically in-tuned and strive to better ourselves with the help of our friends both here and on the other side.

Afterwards, there is a coffee/dessert supper which again is free. It is just an opportunity to chat with everyone and maybe ask further questions of what we experienced that night. Again, everyone is free to come and go and not made to feel awkward if they have to leave early.

So next time you happen to be down the main street on a Wednesday night and you want to pop your head in to say hello or join in, know that this is an extremely fun gathering with friendly people.

EVERY business can only grow so far before the owner or founder can no longer control things through their personal participation. As a business owner, your response at this juncture may have a profound impact on the future of your business.

Step out of the operation too early and things may spiral out of control. Stay involved too long and the business will be constrained by the amount of work you can do personally. So how do you get it right?

One of the things to be aware of is that this is a fundamental change to any business and must be planned and prepared for. The fundamental first step is deciding that you want the business to have a life of its own.

1. Align control and responsibility. This simply means that an individual should not be responsible for something they cannot control, and should not control something they are not responsible for. Group responsibility is no responsibility, so group responsibility should be avoided.

2. What gets measured gets done. This is a well known item in management theory, but often either absent or overused. It is just as important to avoid measuring the things that don’t matter, as it is to measure the things that do matter.

3. Right people, right job. This is realising that people do what they are comfortable doing before they do what they are uncomfortable doing. This recognition is a key component in designing individual roles.

4. Escalate and act. With the above in place, it is important to make people accountable. Responsibility for action, inaction, performance and errors is taken by the relevant individuals. They should be encouraged to report problems and recommend action where appropriate.

Once activities, interactions and structures have been effectively established, you will be free to work on the business rather than in the business, and your organisations size will only be limited by opportunity.

Cooroy one step closer to RV Parking COOROY is one step closer to Recreational Vehicle parking since the Council Ordinary Meeting on 28 August, where councillors voted to: A. Enter into formal negotiations with the Combined Coastal Car Club to allow for a 12 month trial for an RV Stopover utilising the open space included in the Club’s permit to occupy over part of Lot 1 SP242414, 17 Mary River Road, Cooroy; B. Submit an application for material change of use to allow temporary use of the site for up to 2 years by fully self-contained compact recreational vehicles (excluding big rigs over 12.5 m in length), subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the Combined Coastal Car Club; C. Develop a detailed minimum design and associated estimate of costs for a waste dump point and associated facilities to be located within Lot 1 SP242414, 17

Mary River Road, Cooroy, together with associated directional and user signage with a view to a request for funding being submitted to the quarterly budget review process to allow construction to occur during 2014-15; D. Prepare a feasibility assessment of the project to ensure that all financial and risk issues are addressed including the approach to the management model for the 12 month trial; and E. Investigate options and estimated costs to provide parking spaces for long “recreational” vehicles in close proximity to Cooroy town centre and revisit usage of the Council freehold land opposite Cooroy Library for an interim parking area for longer vehicles until a permanent solution can be implemented.

“We are really excited about this decision. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce

has been working on this project with various governments for more than 10 years, lobbying to get caravan and RV day parking and some overnight stops in Cooroy.

“We constantly see caravans and RVs parked on the roadside and across multiple car parks in town and many of our members report that they are constantly asked by visitors if there is a place they can stay overnight with an RV. “So we know there has been a need, but it has been a challenge to find an appropriate spot. This is a really positive step and a big thanks to the Noosa Council for getting us a bit closer to a solution,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor.

There is still a bit of work to go and it will be a few months away at least but this is the biggest step forward we’ve had to date.”

Sparkling September holiday program Noosa Council will provide a sparkling variety of interactive activities for school aged children during the coming Spring break.

In hands on workshops, Sparkles the Clown will teach children tips and techniques of the circus trade. Children can make hula hoops and juggling balls at Noosaville Library on 23 September and at Cooroy Library on 24 September.

Pam is loving life back in Cooroy SHE is well and truly settled back into life on Maple Street, but life has turned full circle for Cooroy Community Bank branch’s, Pam Hoens.

Being second in charge of one of the busiest workplaces in Cooroy leaves Pam little time to reflect, but the privilege of working in a town as wonderful as Cooroy isn’t lost on her.

“I was working at our Cooroy Community Bank branch in 2008, but moved to join the team that opened our Woombye Community Bank branch the following year,” Pam said.

“It was to take up a new role and I loved being

part of a team that brought the whole Community Banking message to a new town. The branch in Woombye is well established now, so I took advantage of the opportunity to take on my current role here a few months ago and haven’t looked back.

POSSUM’S Books and Coffee in Maple Lane, Cooroy has been re-invented as “of Cabbages & Kings”, the name a nod to the Lewis Carroll poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter”. New owner Kim Watt has introduced second hand books and a book exchange system in a bid to widen the appeal of the bookshop.

“Especially with fiction, it’s hard to compete with ebooks these days – they’re so much cheaper and often more accessible than actual books. But nothing beats the smell and feel of a book,” says Kim. Of Cabbages & Kings will still offer an order-

ing service, for both new and second hand books, and Kim is keen to hear feedback from locals regarding what else they’d like to see offered in store.

Of Cabbages & Kings has also brought coffee roasting into the heart of Cooroy – Kim roasts Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance coffees for use in store and for sale, with the roaster taking pride of place in the courtyard.

“It’s a fantastic machine – I roast about three times a week at the moment, so the coffee’s always really fresh. I can also roast to order – so if anyone’s looking for a darker or lighter roast to take home, that’s easily

done.”

As well as coffees, there are locally made cakes and cookies for sale, including gluten free options.

For the less coffee-oriented, there are locally blended loose leaf teas, milkshakes, fruit coolers and organic juices available, with plans in the future to expand the range further.

With comfy sofas inside and tables, chairs and even a hammock outside, there are lots of options for relaxing with a book, or the selection of board games provided.

There’s also a blackboard, jigsaws and plenty of pre-loved kids

books for the smaller customers, and Kim says her intention was to create a space people felt welcome to spend as long or as short a time in as they needed.

“We’re always rushing from one thing to another,” she says, “and a book or a good cup of coffee with friends are things that shouldn’t feel rushed.”

Planning to avoid financial mistakes

But from 1 July this year changes to the aged care system should give individuals and families a clearer understanding of the choices they have and the cost of getting home help or moving to residential care.

The provision of aged care services remains subsidised by the Government, but the focus of the changes is that those who can afford to contribute to the cost of their care should do so.[i] Home-based care For people wanting to stay in their own home as long as possible, the Home and Community Care program is the simplest way for people to get help.

Basic services such as cleaning can be accessed following a simple assessment by an approved provider. The amount a person pays for this will depend on the service, the frequency and their financial situation. However, no one will be denied a service they need, based on an inability to pay. [ii] Where a range of services are needed for a person to remain in their own home there is a more comprehensive Home Care Package.

Ability to pay Someone on the Age Pension will be charged a maximum fee of 17.5 per cent of the basic rate of single pension, with a maximum set at $9.57 a day.

People on higher incomes may be asked

to pay additional fees (limited to 50 per cent of any income above the basic rate of single pension).[iii] Individuals considering the Home Care Package need an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team, arranged through a General Practitioner or within a hospital.

They can also be found on www.myagedcare.gov.au.

ACAT assessments are also needed for anyone entering residential care.

Single fee structure One significant change to reforms covering residential care is the removal of the distinction between low level care and high level care.

In addition, all residents will be subject to the same fee structure, known as an accommodation payment, which will depend on a resident’s assessable income and assets.

Residents with greater means will have to pay more for their ongoing care but caps will be put in place to protect those who receive care over a longer period.

Residents will be able to choose whether they pay for their accommodation as a refundable accommodation deposit (RAD) and equivalent daily accommodation payment (DAP) or a combination of both.

To help people determine whether they can afford a certain facility, all facilities must publish their prices on their website as well as a Government website myagedcare.com.au.

Keeping the family home The income-tested fee for care is to be

replaced with a means tested care fee to determine how much a resident can pay towards the cost of their care. Going forward a person’s home may play a greater role in the financial decision making around going into care.

Where someone going into care owns their own home and no-one eligible lives in it, a portion of its value – currently set at $144,500 and indexed to $153,905 will count towards the assets test. Under the new rules many residents may end up paying a lower means-tested care fee if they keep their home.[iv] The new rules apply to individuals who enter residential aged care on or after 1 July 2014, with existing residents grandfathered under the current rules.

WHAT happens when a human resources consultant and a former journalist join forces?

They buy a secondhand and antiques store, naturally!

Well, that’s the case with former State Government HR consultant, Jenny Ryland, and ex-journo, Ross Birkett, who have combined forces to become the new owners of Maple Lane Secondhand & Antiques in Cooroy.

Jenny has worked for a number of years for various State Government departments in HR. She recently severed her ties with the Department of Primary Industries based in Nambour to buy the business.

Ross has, in recent times, been involved in the not-for-profit area in Brisbane, but for many years worked as a journalist for newspapers, radio and TV in New Zealand, Africa and England.

It might seem somewhat odd backgrounds to come from into the world of old furniture and antiquities, but Jenny says both she and Ross have always had an interest in things with a bit of history attached.

“I’ve always loved poking around antique and secondhand shops and have bought some great pieces over the years,” she says.

“It was always a bit of a dream to run a business where I could indulge this passion.”

Jenny and Ross have been good friends for many years, and while Jenny has been a local for around seven years, Ross is a newly minted Coaster having moved up from Brisbane to take over the business.

“Jenny had been twisting my arm for several years to move up this way, but I was never quite sure what to do with myself once I got here,” he says.

“Jenny put this proposition to me about a business venture and anything to do with history had me hooked.”

Both admit it’s been a bit of a steep learning curve, but say the reception and feedback to date from customers at the Maple Lane shop have been “overwhelming” and very gratify-

Christmas in Cooroy is going to be wild!

WHEN it comes to the cream of the crop, Christmas in Cooroy is right up there in terms of festive season celebrations! This year is the tenth anniversary of the event and the theme is going to be Wild West!

“Who would have thought 10 years ago that the little festival we started for Cooroy that attracted a few hundred people would grow to the huge and unique festival that it is today!” said event manager Danielle Taylor.

The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a big drawcard with around 30 floats decorated in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways and crowds lining the street from the Mill Site to the Cooroy Hotel to watch all the fun.

“This year’s theme for the Bendigo Bank Street Parade is “Wild West”. We thought this was fitting because we are the west end of Noosa and we know how to have a wild time at Christmas in Cooroy! Plus Cooroy loves a dress up so we can already envisage the street’s lined with cowboys, Indians, sheriffs, cows, saloon girls and all sorts of other imaginative costumes,” explained Danielle.

“All the other favourites of the festival will be happening too and this year we are planning a few extra surprises still to be announced to up the ante for our 10th annual event!”

The Guardian Pharmacy Photo Competition and Exhibition at the Butter Factory Arts Centre has a theme of “Remember When…” this year and entries will be opening soon.

Other traditional highlights are the Great Santa Race, free rides, the Caravan of Smiles, face painting, Poets Breakfast and a great entertainment lineup including local party band Smokin Mirrors, the East versus West Tug of War, Santa Visit and a fantastic fireworks display. Christmas in Cooroy is on Saturday 6 December from 4pm.

Rotary welcomes Vivianne Dawalibi COOROY Rotary welcomes their newest member, Noble Peace Prize Certificate and UNESCO Peace Prize holder and refugee, VIVIANNE DAWALIBI Vivianne Dawalibi was born in Syria and grew up in Sudan. She served humanity for two decades assisting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in providing solutions to refugees’ issues.

Vivianne was entrusted to lead various emergency operations with UNHCR starting from Sudan, to Kenya, Somalia, Armenia, Belarus, Bangladesh and finally in Bosnia Herzegovina during the Kosovo conflict. Each of these operations had its own specificity depending on political conditions of that country and relationship with UNHCR in regard to International Refugee Convention.

The Sudan operation was the largest operation as UNHCR had been catering for more than two and half million refugees from various African countries. Vivianne

played the role of a “Program Officer” and was entrusted to lead various emergency operations in those countries.

Vivianne was delighted to become a refugee herself in Australia (1999). She worked as a community worker with the Melkite Catholic Church in Greenacre, NSW. She is the founder of “Melkite Catholic Welfare Association (2000)”.

She developed unaccredited course Certificate IV on Small Business Management and delivered three training programs. She received grants from the Federal, State and Local Government (NSW) and implemented various community programs.

Vivianne now runs the Cooroy Family Practice.

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

ANOTHER quick arrest was made by Cooroy Police after several unlawful entry offences were reported on the 15th of August, 2014. Two Cooroy businesses were entered during daylight hours by an opportunist male entering through insecure doors and whilst employees were still actively working in the premises. This early arrest was again greatly assisted by another shop keeper reporting suspicious behaviour and immediately reporting the matter to police. Upon responding and using good local knowledge a suspect was quickly identified and extensive patrols commenced in an endeavour to locate the offender before further offences were committed. Unfortunately the male was not located on that night as he had fled the scene. The offender then used stolen credit cards to commit further fraud offences around the Cooroy and Noosaville areas. Further stealing and unlawful entry to motor vehicles were also reported. Extensive proactive patrols were then commenced in an effort to locate the above mentioned suspect and again, through the alertness of a Cooroy Police patrol the suspect was sighted after dark lurking in Maple Street, Cooroy. A foot chase resulted in the male being apprehended and arrested and conveyed to the Maroochydore Watch house where he was charged with the above mentioned offences including 2 further offences of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, Fraud, Stealing and Unlawful Entry charges including unlawfully entering motor vehicles.

Thankfully this male has been removed from the streets of Cooroy thus reducing

the chances of him reoffending however for every offender removed there is another one waiting to take his place.

Can I please remind business owners and residents to lock the rear and side doors to their premises even during trading hours as this type of sneak offence is becoming very prevalent around the Sunshine Coast District. I am by no means being critical of the businesses that were targeted on this occasion as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to become complacent in regards this issue when crime rates are so low around this area. This offender was also stealing property from unlocked vehicles so again, please lock up your cars or risk having your property or your car stolen. In an interesting side note to the above and to realise just how much technology can be used by police to solve crime and apprehend offenders the offenders involved in this latest matter stole an Eperb which is a device used to assist in land and sea searches when people go missing. In essence an Eperb is a device carried by adventurist and fitted with a satellite tracking device to assist emergency services to locate them during an emergency. During the commission of this offence the Eperb was accidentally activated by the offender which was subsequently tracked by police and the signal found to be emanating from the offenders address.

Members of the general public and business community are encouraged to get on board with this type of technology. Smart phones can be easily fitted with tracking applications in the event of them being lost or stolen and technology also exists to do the same for your motor

vehicle. CCTV continues to greatly assist police in solving crime and is not that expensive nowadays.

Once again the September school holidays are almost upon us which means a huge increase in vehicles on our road system. Traditionally, several families will be torn apart in coming weeks as statistics show that several people on the Sunshine Coast will be killed over this coming period. Several local people have recently lost their lives on the Bruce Hwy between Cooroy and Gympie in recent times so I make no apologies in saying that a zero tolerance approach to the enforcement of the road rules will be taken during these school holidays.

Police will be focusing specifically on the Fatal Five of offences namely Drink/Drug Driving, Speeding, Seatbelts, Fatigue and Inattention and Distraction (ie: Mobile Phones & Texting) The goal being that no family will receive a knock on the door from police to advice of a death on the road.

Can I also mention that traffic driving through the extensive road works on the Bruce Hwy upgrade project and coming into Cooroy township MUST comply with the posted speed limits within these roadwork zones at all times and not just when it suits. Traffic controllers within these sites report many drivers disobeying there directions. It is an offence to disobey a qualified Road Traffic Controller in the exercise of their duties so be aware that these roadwork sites will also be patrolled by police so do not risk a hefty fine

Tech savvy preps

Boys night in TO a young boy, the promise of campfires, cooking damper, pizza and a sleepover are too good to miss! So on Saturday evening August 30th, about 30 excited boys and 12 dads arrived at Noosa Christian College, Cooroy (NCC) for a fun night together. After pitching tents or claiming a sleeping spot on the library floor, the boys and their dads built six individual small fires to cook their damper.

Mr Rogers, NCC (School Principal) demonstrated how to roll a piece of dough into a long ‘snake’ and then wrap it around a green stick. When the damper was

Prep students using the XO’s for the first time COOROY State School Prep students were overjoyed this morning when each student received their very own laptop.

The initiative being rolled out across the three Prep classroom will see current Prep students and all 2015 Prep students receive XO Laptops which will travel with them throughout their first few years of schooling. The laptops will not only

enhance the junior school technology program but allow for the integration and enhancement of other learning areas such as literacy and math. When asked “What was the best part of the Boys Night In?” one of the boys enthusiastically reported “Sleeping under a table in the Library!”

real estate Record inter-state real estate prices increasing demand on Sunshine Coast REAL estate values on the Sunshine Coast are starting to see a jump, as buyers in the seemingly out of control Sydney and Melbourne housing markets search for more affordable place to invest.

Sales volumes, clearance rates and property prices have increased dramatically in Sydney and Melbourne in recent times - putting both of Australia’s major cities among the most expensive house markets in the world.

Over the past year it has been great to witness the growth of confidence and the ability to convey imaginative ideas coming from every member of our group. Each of us has their own style and the diversity of talent is

wonderfully interesting. The first two hours of our meeting is very casual and so much fun but this year we have added on an extra hour for those wishing to push forward a little more seriously with the hope of getting published.

Pic by Nick Webster THE Noosa Pirates U12 rugby league team recently competed in a rugby league carnival in Gladstone. There were 34 teams competing, representing all parts of Queensland.

The Noosa Pirates conceded only four tries throughout 10 games and finished third overall, losing to eventual winners Mackay Magpies 8-0 in the semi final.

Mar Cross, the coach of the Pirates, was extremely proud of the boys, and is confide3nt the experience will make them all better footballers.

We would also like to sincerely thank all of the businesses in Cooroy for their kind donations of goods and vouches.

This helped us to raise much needed funds that enabled us to travel to

Gladstone and successfully compete in the Jason Hetherington Cup. Thank you.

SUNSHINE Coast Regional Gymnastics Championships were held over two weekends in August. The girls competition was held on 10th of August whilst the Boys was held on the 3rd, both at the Maroochydore Gymnastics Club.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Championships includes clubs from, Wide bay, Gympie, Sunshine Coast and Deception Bay. The Cooroy Girls team excelled winning 8 regional titles including two all around titles at level 5 and level 6. This is the best outcome Cooroy Gymnastics has had in many years from our WAG Program with our highest level of participants and overall and apparatus awards.

Women’s Coach Letisha Thomson said,”All girls had excellent results and personal achievements including passing their levels, PB’s, State Qualifications, Regional Challenge Members, Apparatus placings and Overall Placings.”

Australia’s own Rock/Roots larrikin, Asa Broomhall has given us his 5th independent album, Jangle House. Recorded in an iconic old Guitar Shop in Brisbane over the Easter 2011 break, Jangle House

was truly a labour of love. Recording in a historically musical place was just one reason for creating this album. Asa’s brother ’s house, where previous albums had been recorded/mixed and where the studio was located, was consumed by the January 2011 floods and was subsequently condemned and demolished.

Furthermore the album was mixed and overdubs were laid down in a number of temporary home studios.

Combine this with the sound of the Guitar Shop that can only be described as an old house full of guitars, you start to get a sense for the album and its title, Jangle House.

Despite the numerous recording and mixing environments, Jangle House retains the polish of modern albums with the added charm of traditional releases recorded with a ‘live’ feel.

This album began as a challenge and became a triumph with ten full band tracks of rock/folk

and Blues songs and a version of Marley’s classic, Waiting in Vain.

On stage, Asa’s powerful guitar driven songs and dynamic live show has taken him from clubs and festivals all over Australia to touring with national and international artists and regularly performing in the UK, USA and Canada.

With five independent and self-produced releases and twelve years of shows under his belt, Asa’s dedication to his music and his live show is obvious.

Set in the snow covered village of Deepdene, it tells the story of a very small peace loving dragon, who simply wants to live quietly in a cave above the village.

The children love him but the elders don’t want a dragon living

near them and summon St George, the famous dragon slayer.

The problem is that St George is now an old man and not up to it, besides he and the dragon get on famously, so they decide to fake a fight to the finish.

TINBEERWAH Art Group will be holding their next Art Show at Tinbeerwah Hall on the 19th â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 21st September.

Award winning local artist Lyn Fraser-Roberts is our tutor in residence for 2014 and she has encouraged members to develop their own individual ideas and techniques in contemporary and traditional styles. Members paint in oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels and mixed media.

Judith Laws has always been intrigued by the Eliza Fraser story and was compelled to show a female insight into this woman’s tragedy. Through these expressive works the viewer can feel the artist’s fascination with Fraser Island that extend to her involvement and empathy with Mrs Fraser entering into the drama of the story themselves. Joy Pearce - long standing volunteer EVERYONE at Carramar Op Shop and NoosaCare are very sad to have lost one of their much loved and valued volunteers, Joy Pearce, who recently passed away peacefully at Katie Rose Cottage.

Joy volunteered at the Op Shop for 18 years, and was very well known, working at the front desk three days a week. She

was always willing to take on extra shifts if needed, which often meant she would be volunteering five days a week, almost becoming part of the furniture.

Joy made many friends over the years with both customers and colleagues alike.

NURSES at Eden Hospital, some of Queensland’s lowest-paid nurses, marched the streets of Cooroy earlier this month to to gather signatures for a petition to be delivered to Pulse Health Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Phillipa Blakey protesting pay and conditions at Pulse Health Private Hospitals. .

Queensland Nurses’ Union (QNU) Secretary Beth Mohle said staff at the Pulse Health facilities were paid up to 30 per cent less than other nurses and planned industrial action followed months of failed negotiations with management.

Ms Mohle said nurses at the the Eden Rehabilitation Unit in Cooroy, Kingaroy Private Hospital and the Gympie Private Hospital received up to $10 an hour less than their public

health colleagues - and did not get regular pay rises or adequate meal breaks.

She said a raft of issues, including low staff levels and ongoing concerns for patient safety due to excessive workloads, prompted the need for stop-work meetings.

“These nurses have been underpaid and undervalued for years and they have had enough,’’ Ms Mohle said.

“They are being paid tens of thousands of dollars less than other nurses and also have concerns about staffing levels and other issues concerning working conditions and their patients.’’

Nursing staff remained on ward during the one-hour stop-work meeting eo ensure patient safety would not be compromised.

UNA Valmai Bryant (Nee Robinson) passed away peacefully on 14th August 2014 aged 84 years.

Many will know that Una’s husband Reg was the founding President of Kabara, serving from 1985 until his passing in 1999.

The Bryants, together with many other perceptive townsfolk and organisations, realised that Cooroy needed accommodation for people finding it lonely and hard to cope at home. They started with nothing but a blank sheet and dedication to the cause.

Kabara, which grew in two stages to 43 units by 1999, was the proud result of everyone pulling together.

Una participated in the daily fundraising and remained a pillar of the Kabara volunteer community.

Una was very involved in the Cooroy Community including the Cooroy Rotary Club.

Road Across the Range 2 An exhibition from the Heart POMONA Railway Station Gallery is proud to present an exhibition by popular local artist Dale Leach.The art in this show reflects a personal experience as described below by the artist: “The exhibition is based on my daily 28 km round trip where I drive from my home in Doonan to my mum’s place in Cooroy and home again. I do this to assist her with living independently.

She is 89 and living with dementia. Things are changing steadily for mum so I never know when the dementia is going to claim her totally. But I do what I can to support her in living with her two beloved cats in her own home. As I was often tired and feeling sad to see what was happening to mum I decided to turn this drive in to something stimulating and positive for me. I began to look at it as an art project. I tried to imagine how each section of road fitted the preceding one. What did it look like at dusk or in the dark. What are the names of the grasses and trees and what is flowering. By doing this I started to enjoy and appreciate the drive and have even extended the range and scope of the project to incorporate photographs I have taken on drives with mum in and around the Cooroy district.”

New koala habitat at Verrierdale MORE than 7,000 koala habitat trees will be planted on a 252 hectare site at Verrierdale as part of a koala off-set project for recently completed safety works on the Bruce Highway near the Ettamogah Pub. Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes said the project aimed to off-set the environmental impacts of the Frizzo Road and Sippy Creek Road upgrade.

“The $15 million project, fully funded by the Australian Government, delivered crucial safety improvements by upgrading the north-bound Bruce Highway entry near Aussie World and building a new road link to Sippy Creek Road,” Mr Elmes said.

“This koala off-set project will see any koala habitat adversely affected by the road project restored at another suitable location. “The off-set works are being funded by the Australian Government and delivered by the

Queensland State Government Department of Transport and Main Roads and Sunshine Coast Council,” Mr Elmes said.

“This is a great initiative which will reduce the environmental footprint of this important road safety project and help protect our vulnerable koala population.

“The Sunshine Coast Council is providing invaluable support for the project by allowing its environmental reserve to be used for the new koala habitat and, due to the limited land available at the project site, the Council’s reserve was the best option.

“Land around it is known to support koalas and it is part of a wider biodiversity corridor for future preservation,” Mr Elmes said.Planting for the off-set project at Verrierdale has now begun and is expected to be completed by early next month. . www.cooroyrag.com.au

WHEN the theme for Seniors Week 2014 was announced as ‘A Life Well Lived and Much More to Come…Timeless’, the Pomona & District Community House decided to ask Seniors what this meant to them and to respond in whatever medium called to them. The responses included essays, poems, photographs and art works.

For those left wondering how best to answer the question, a Mixed Media Workshop invited participants to explore the theme through words and images. The

In addition to asking for contributions, the Community House interviewed several ‘local treasures’ about what a ‘Life Well Lived’ meant to them. Alison Napier went out with pad and pen and discovered some great stories and a wonderful array of ‘precious stones, hidden gems and sparkling jewels.’

Last Tuesday, interviewees and contributors came together to celebrate with a lunch at the Lawson Shed. Ian Mackay, well-known bush poet and wordsmith, hosted the event and entertained with his individual brand of poetry.

The contributions and interviews have been collated into a special Seniors Week magazine.

Demons round-up the season ON the weekend we had a number of finals go on.

The Under 12’s had gone all season at the top of the ladder with just one loss for the season. They were hot favourites but as often happens to the hot favourites they get pipped at the post. This year the boys lost the Grand Final to Caloundra by a mere 2 goals. A brave effort by our boys and the whole club is proud of them.

Seniors likewise had a good season coming second on the ladder to Maroochydore in percentage. However on Saturday down at Glasshouse and under

strength Pomona side battled bravely to go down 111 to 78 points in the preliminary final.

The Demons side was seriously depleted due to injury and others working away but the team fought bravely and only lost out on accuracy in front of goal.

The Sunshine Coast Junior AFL held their presentation night on the 26th of August at the prestigious Innovation Canter at Sunshine Coast University.

Those that were in contention for overall awards that cover all teams in their division were invited to attend.

Pomona proudly had two footballers that have shown great skill and achieved best and fairest votes in their respective grades.

Zac Henning was in-

vited as a contender in the Best and Fairest voting for the DIVISION 2 UNDER 14.Unfortunatly Zac just missed bringing home an award but when you consider Zac

missed a number of games due to injury and competing in Karate championships at the highest level his effort was outstanding.

Martin Kelly was also invited as a contender in the best and fairest voting and also Martin was the league’s leading goal kicker in the DIVISION 2 UNDER 12 competition. Kicking a massive 82 goals for the season Martin was first with daylight second.

Congratulations Martin.

After the final votes were counted for the Best and Fairest ,Martin finished runner-up missing the top award by just 1 vote. This is an outstanding result and the whole club is very proud of this promising footballer.

With the football awards over it was time to acknowledge the off field achievements within Sunshine Coast Junior Football clubs and the Demons had a couple of special achievers there as well.

Matt Carson received a commitment to Sunshine Coast Junior Football Award for showing leadership within the club.

Matt was our Under 16 captain with his parents Matt was involved in starting the process of “code of conduct policies “that the club now have in place. Well done Matt and well done Sunshine Coast Junior Football for recognising his

efforts. Megan Phipps received the volunteer of the year to cap off a great performance by the small club at the foot of Pomona Mountain.

The night before down at the Gabba was the seniors black tie

presentation night and once again the Demons were well represented and took out the top award. Lanze Magin won Best and Fairest for Queensland Football Association North (B) division.
