Grand Final Win for Cooroora

WINNERS: The first Cooroora United Men’s team to win the Grand Final in the history of the Club

IT’S been a huge season for Cooroora United Football Club, with 8 of 9 competitive teams playing finals football, 4 of which progressed to the grand final and the Men’s Division 5 side and the Under 14 boys coming away with silverware.

The undefeated men’s team faced off against a determined Beerwah side, who had just come off the back of a huge win in the semi finals. Cooroora left no time for Beerwah to settle, with high intensity attacking football straight from the whistle.

After several chances, Cooroora’s break through came after only 5 minutes of foot-

ball, as a Jacob Mander cross found Thomas Spencer at the far post to make it 1-0 to the Wombats!

Cooroora didn’t slack off with a second goal coming just 5 minutes later, after Tony McCarthy whipped in a beautiful corner to find an unmarked Dave Ferris, 2-0!

Beerwah managed to pull one back toward the end of the first half, but they were caught celebrating and the Cooroora lads took advantage of this, with some fantastic play between Dale Brown and Hamish Wyatt Cooroora pushed into Beerwah’s penalty area, finding Kien Buckman, who

after pushing his way through some would be defence found the bottom corner, 3-1!

After dominating the second half the Cooroy boys came away with the win, becoming the first men’s division side to win a grand final in the history of the club.

It was a first for many of the under 14 boys too, as they lifted the trophy after defeating a strong Maleny side 2-0 in the grand final.

Goals from Hamish Mienart and Evan Ryan guided the boys to a comfortable win.

Construction on new Emerald Street site for Family and Local History Group to commence this month

Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group have been raising funds for over twenty years to build the centre and construction will start on the building in early October.

Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival SECLUDED PARADISE IN POMONA

THE Rotary Club of Cooroy 3rd Annual Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival will be held on Sunday 16th October at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Water property. This is a once a year opportunity to view our mountain and enjoy the beautiful outdoors and at the same time have fun.

This is a great event which enables the Rotary Club of Cooroy to raise much needed funds for local charities. The main beneficiary will be Sunshine Butterflies, A local disability support service and charity supporting babies, kids, tweens, teens and adults with a disability and their families.

Watch for swooping magpies COUNCIL is warning residents to watch out for swooping magpies this spring, as the breeding season begins.

“Most magpies do not attack, but during breeding season some individual birds can become aggressive in defending their nest,” says Council’s Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne.

Council puts up signage in areas where the public has reported swooping magpies. As the breeding season lasts several weeks, the best way is to avoid walking or cycling through these areas until breeding is finished.

COUNCIL is considering trialling new road surfaces, including a product made from used printer cartridges.

Director of Planning & Infrastructure Martin Drydale said there were several innovations Council was looking to road-test as part of this year’s re-seal and rehabilitation program.

“There are various alternatives to traditional asphalt that promise environmental benefits, making them well worth a look,” Mr Drydale said.

“One such product is manufactured using old toner cartridges from printers, these being combined with recycled car tyres. If successful, each kilometre of paving would potentially avert thousands of plastic cartridges from ending up in landfill.

“Another asphalt product is poured at a lower temperature, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Plus we will continue to look for opportunities to reclaim our old asphalt and recycle it.

“Noosa Council has an opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative road technology. We look forward to working with our successful contractors to determine the best way forward,” Mr Drydale said.

They can’t help themselves Nobody’s really surprised, the Federal Government is back to form.

The pollies are on track again to return to their expected norm.

Parliament had been sitting just two days, when suddenly all is hurley burley, Some pollies allegedly in control, had decided to go home early.

The PM sobs his embarrassment, all the defaulters are called back, The Party’s leaders are enraged, those at fault may get the sack.

Let’s face it, they’ve just had about three month’s leave, And in a little while, they’ll have more holidays up their sleeve.

So some complacently knocked off early, after just two days of so called work, And their slimmest of one vote margins, receives a frightening jerk!

The political breeze is blowing strongly, toward a spill or another election, Whatever happens the answer will be confusion and more aggression.

They spend most of their time in argy-bargy, no pretence at being a parliament, Not much time for being a parliament, but lots of time for argument.

The Government doesn’t seem to give a toss, as the country goes to pot, Surely we deserve better than this, but sadly this is what we’ve got.

My generation coped with a Depression, and a world wide war, but could still smile, But at times I often wonder, if it was all worthwhile.

More market terms: Bear Market – a 16 to 18 month period when the kids get no allowance, the wife gets no jewellery and the husband gets no sex.

Members of Cooroy Toastmasters celebrate the group’s 5th birthday COOROY Toastmasters celebrated their 5th anniversary on the 5th of September 2016. Toastmasters is an international organisation which offers personal development, communications and leadership training – all for just $10 per month.

Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the Cooroy Library. Guests and prospective members are always welcome.

The Club recently held a demonstration meeting where the Club’s newest member Kali bravely delivered her first public speech to a large group of people. Kali somehow managed to appear not the least bit nervous and captivated the audience with her tale of a day in the life of a girl who loves plants and books. Ted Gibbs showed why he was judged as Toastmasters 2016 State Champion Humorous speaker with his speech titled “Excuse Me, Do You Work Here” about his misadventures as a supermarket shelf-stacker. The story he told

was reminiscent of “Murphy and the Bricks (Why Paddy’s Not at Work Today)” and certainly made everyone laugh.

This year Cooroy is hosting the annual Area Conference where all of the Sunshine Coast Toastmasters Clubs combine to showcase their top speakers. This event will be held Saturday 22nd of October at Cooroy State School Hall and is open to members of the public as well as Toastmasters Club members. The keynote speaker for the day will be Major-General (Retired) John Cantwell AO DSC, who commanded Australian forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and is the author of two acclaimed books Exit Wounds and Leadership in Action. TO improve your business cash flow, you need the period between paying your expenses and getting paid by your debtors to be as short as possible. When you set up a new account, make sure you and your client both agree to the credit terms. This may include discounts for early payment, or interest charged for late payments.

Once these terms are in place, monitor them by communicating with your client so they are always clearly informed of when they are expected to pay and also how late payments will be handled. For example, a three-step process may involve a phone call at two weeks late, a letter of demand at one month, and referral to a collection agency at two months.

If an existing customer is stretching out your terms, you need to change their behaviour. A lot of owners are scared to request prompt payment because they feel they will lose business by being too demanding, but by not doing this, you have actually become part of the problem. You need to assume a more assertive attitude, because once you’ve provided goods and/or services, you’re working for free until your customer pays you.

However changing behaviour requires a gradual approach. Remember you’re the one who has let them creep out to these longer terms. So, you have to work with them to make changes; you can’t just pull a stick out and start beating them with it. Call them more frequently, and sooner than you usually would.

For example, if someone is paying you regularly at 90 days, start calling them at 30 days and say ‘The invoice is due, can you please advise when it’ll be paid?’ You don’t want to lose your client by changing your credit terms dramatically, but do explain to them that you need to be paid on time.

If there have been exceptional circumstances that prevent your client from paying on time, find out if what they’re saying is plausible. If they can’t afford to pay the entire amount, develop a payment schedule and be clear on the consequences if the instalment terms are not met.

Monitor your balance.

It’s a good idea to check your account balance. This is how much money is left in your account after your bills and other expenses have been paid. If it’s going up then you can relax.

FIVE years ago, whilst living in Belgium, Jeffrey Robinson told his aunt that he wanted to be a tattoo artist. Her reply to me was “But how are you going to live?”

“I was 29 and was totally lost. Apart from my primary career as a Chef, I had tried every job possible and was still miserable,” says Jeffrey.

“Ever since I was a kid, I had always loved art, but in today’s society it’s most likely going to stay a hobby. One day, I was thinking about the tattoo I had done on my back after my mother passed away when I was 18. I remembered saying to myself … I can do that. Maybe even better”.

So Jeffrey decided to give away all his belongings just keeping enough for a backpack and a plane ticket for Australia. With his New Zealand passport in his pocket and determination in the other he followed his dream.

Today he is married, living in Noosa Heads and just opened his own studio ‘BigFish Tattoo’, named after the artist name he gave himself after leaving Belgium, to symbolize his new life.

“I have never been happier,” says Jeffrey. “My aunt, who thought I was going to end up under a bridge visited me in January when I got married. She saw the progress I have made and told me how proud she was. That was one of the best days of my life.

“I felt the need to share my story with as many people as possible. Tattoos can have an impact on people’s lives in a positive way.

“Finding a place in this industry changed the muddy road that was my life into a smooth highway. I truly believe in this industry and the potential it has to change people’s lives, regardless of which side of the needle you are on.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working on a 74year-old grandmother who got a Betty Boop tattoo, she was so funny. I have had a homo-

sexual couple that got matching tattoos for their “coming out” to their parents. I have tattooed a family with matching feather tattoos to support a breast cancer victim in their family. I was even asked from a breast cancer survivor to cover up her scar from the surgery.

“Those two where important for me due to losing my own mother to breast cancer. There are so many beautiful and sad moments that can be expressed through a tattoo. They can be simple or intricate, they can be obvious or subjective, meaningless or meaningful. But a tattoo that has a meaning, in 5, 20 or even 50 years’ time, won’t be just ink on your skin.

Spring into Eumundi on Fridays KNOWN for its bustling markets every Wednesday and Saturday, the Eumundi township is welcoming in Spring by offering a unique ‘behind the scenes’ meet-up with its artisans, fashion designers, makers, restaurateurs and musicians.

Every Friday from 9am to 4pm for the twelve weeks of Spring, this exciting addition to the cultural calendar in Eumundi will run designer wear fashion workshops, art and craft gatherings, author talks, live music and meet-the-maker opportunities.

The initiative is led by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and in partnership with Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) and Experience Eumundi. Chamber President Andrew Dudas is thrilled at the prospect of welcoming more locals and visitors into the town outside market days.

“Fridays will mean visitors can immerse themselves in the culture of the town, delving into the stories behind the artwork or learning how to put together a designer fashion wardrobe for Spring Carnival,” said Mr Dudas.

“Meeting the makers, visiting their studios and understanding how an item is crafted, gives the visitor an opportunity to better connect with the town, its people and the source of the products.”

The renowned Eumundi Markets regularly attract more than 10,000 visitors every market day and this ‘whole-of-town’ experience on a Friday encourages people to visit for longer and enjoy a treasured one-on-one experience.

Over 15 businesses are opening their doors each Friday and every week there is something new on offer. Visitors can lose track of time paging through the treasure trove of rare and specialty out-of-print books, engage with makers to find that special momento or gift, learn the secrets of artisans and designers in their creative spaces, indulge the senses with delicious homemade food from local produce, as well as fare cooked by world class chefs.

Eumundi Square will host ‘Friday Style’ each Friday morning, with 90 boutique stores, workshops with designers and jewelers, fashion parades, guest speakers, makeovers, a children’s’ crèche and model quests.

SevGen will be conducting indigenous events, workshops, and storytelling, Artisans Gallery Eumundi will feature local artisans practicing rare and forgotten art forms with “meet-the-maker” demonstrations in the afternoon, and Berkelouw Books will present featured author presentations at 11am.

There will also be a self-guided arts trail, as well as the opportunity to explore Eumundi’s treasured heritage with a guided historical town walk by Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Information Centre.

Throughout the village Pearls for Girls, Cinnabar Soul, The Real McCaul, and Maggy Mae are all offering workshop/demonstrations throughout the day.

And when you are ready to replenish and relax, a number of Eumundi’s favourite eateries are serving up special lunch menus and live music such as The Imperial Hotel, The Fig Eumundi, the Bohemian Bungalow and Hideaway Café.

Marlene Strudwick, Lyn Pluck and Derek Stevenson enjoying their trip on the Bundy Bell THE Probus Club of Cooroy has just enjoyed a couple of wonderful days up in Bundaberg staying in the Spanish Motor Inn. The Bundaberg Distillery proved a great starting point that put us all in the right spirit to party. There was plenty to do around the town with the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, museums, art galleries, beautiful gardens and more, so we basically just met up for meals.

Whenever in Bundy, the Spotted Dog Tavern is a ‘ must do’ for dinner while Grunske’s by the River is the choice for those who enjoy quality fresh seafood.

A trip on the Bundy Bell cruising down the Burnett River proved a pleasant way to spend happy hour. The skipper entertained us with tales of the characters who shaped Bundaberg and stories of the many floods that have devastated the region.

Overall a fun week spent in good fellowship.

NOOSA District State High School Year 11 student leader Chandler Kamradt is spending his school holidays working in Cambodia building homes for impoverished families and teaching English in a Cambodian school.

Chandler is working with a team of volunteers that are undertaking projects in a rural community.

“This is such a great experience, unlike anything I have done before,” Chandler said.

Highlights for Chandler, thus far, include meeting the families the new homes are to house and the feeling of accomplishment Chandler has experienced upon seeing the homes through to completion.

“We did one house in just two days,” Chandler said.

The Love and Heart School took Chandler and other English speaking volunteers in to run English lessons and to interact with the students to allow for the students and the volunteers to develop and deepen intercultural understandings.

“I will miss all the students at the Love and Heart School so much,” Chandler said.

“This is an amazing trip. I hope to do something again like this in the near future,” Chandler said.

Gary and his dog Boofa, with Kerry, who came as an extra fixture with the shop WHEN Gary Rainer bought Pomona Produce and Pet Supplies in November last year, he brought with him a lifetime of experience in everything to do with the land, and has become very popular with his customers as he is always happy to share that knowledge.

Many Pomona locals know Gary, as he has lived in the area for 9 years and is well respected in the equine industry, as he breeds and breaks in horses on his property outside of Pomona. You may have spotted him at the recent Noosa Show in Pomona riding the white paint stallion in his position as Clark of the Course. Changing lives, one child at a time WE’RE reminded a dog is a man’s best friend so often that it’s easy to forget the power of those words. Slowly, organisations like Smart Pups are teaching us that those words are changing young lives. The Pomona based notfor-profit organisation specialises in providing trained service dogs to assist children with special needs.

As more locals learn about Smart Pups and the amazing work they do, the more we marvel at the positive changes that occur between a child and a Smart Pup over time.

One local business decided to give Smart Pups a call to make a donation last week. They were delighted when not only a few representatives turned up to say thank you, but when some Smart Pups in training came along as well, hearts melted and big smiles appeared. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank handed over $325 from an internal fundraiser to Janelle and Kylie from Smart Pups last week, and it was hard to get the team back to work after the pups left. “The more we learn about the work these guys do, the more you want to give. In our case, we hope this is the beginning of a lot more over time, but the gift Smart Pups brings to improve the quality of life of children with autism and seizure related syndromes is simply incredible,” Geoff said. Janelle Denny from Smart Pups said each pooch reduce stress level in children and have a profound effect on the day-to-day lives of the child and family.

“Since we launched the charity in 2011, our organisation has place 71 dogs with families. At the moment we have another 48 families on our register.

“Each dog is placed at 12-18 months of age and is granted full public access and they accompany families on shopping trips, outings and even holidays. The dog become an integral part of the recipient families’ life,” Janelle said.

“We don’t receive any official government funding so we rely solely on donations, grants and fundraising activities to operate. That’s why donations just like this one from Bendigo Bank are so valued and so important to us,” she added.

The strong competition brought out the best in some players with Margie Lucas powering ahead to win the coveted Club Champion trophy. Division 2 Champion was Eve Hunt with Jan Galvin winning Division 3.

The Nett trophy for Division 1 had to be settled by a count-back with Carmel Clark succeeding over Terri Cairns. Maz Gray had what looked like an easy win in Division 2 while Judy Kitcher had to dig deep to win Division 3.

One Million Stars to end violence THE One Million Stars project creates a safe space for people to talk about the overwhelming human crisis that is violence. It offers a gentle way to make a statement about working together, supporting each other and dealing with violence in our communities.

Weaving one million stars represents the monumental the task of ending violence. It requires the effort and commitment of everyone across the world: government leaders, non-government, human rights activists, school communities, faith communities, men, women – everyone.

The Sunshine Coast Starweave community has reached its goal of making 10,000 stars which will be displayed in a spectacular display at Noosa Civic for three weeks from 4 October.

This number of stars represents thousands of hours in workshops at the Old Ambo Station in Nambour, Community Centres and Libraries from

Pomona to Coolum to Caloundra, private homes with friends and family, schools and festival tents.

One of the key star leaders, Susie Blue, has supported an ever-growing number of people wanting to be involved. “Even at one of our last workshops people stopped to ask if they could get involved”. Susie said that while the final installation of the Sunshine community’s 10,000 stars will complete the local project, anyone who wishes, can continue making stars. This event is being held to raise funds to facilitate the continuation of the ‘Footprints Program” at Nambour Hospital. This will enable us to supply paper craft materials to make ‘Footprints Cards’ whereby ‘angel babies’ are acknowledged and parents/grandparents are provided with a special footprint record, and in some cases (as appropriate/requested) a name card. prints program has been in place at Mater Hospital since 2007. The Paper Angels team has implemented this into several other hospitals. The program has been in place at Nambour Hospital since 2015. STILL, an Adults Only production directed by Cooran-based writer, director, producer, actor and teacher Louise Bezel, opens in October bringing raw, contemporary theatre to our doorstop.

This coast to country collaboration will see Noosa Arts Theatre tour the production to Pomona’s Majestic Theatre for one-night only on Saturday 15 October. The tour comes thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant and a push by local creatives to bring quality theatre to our hinterland venues.

Written by leading Australian playwright Jane Bodie, STILL is a series of eight monologues exploring the nature of want.

The play focuses on characters at epic crossroads and shares their journey as they each search for meaning and human connection in unexpected places. The play weaves through the personal humiliation of failed relationships to the agonizing state of denial that bumping into your ex-lover and his new partner at the supermarket causes.

The eight engaging monologues are presented by a selection of Sunshine Coast’s finest actors (aged from 20s to over 50s), including Madeleine Carter, Claire Fermo, Sharon Grimley, Stephen Moore, James Patrick Reed, Ben Snaath, Frank Wilkie and our very own Pomona resident Andrée Stark.

“The show is appealingly raw and the subject matter is uncensored, unleashing a beautiful mix of edgy, black comedy pieces”, director Louise Bezel said.

Graduating from the prestigious London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Louise subsequently worked for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company and has appeared in a number of Australian films, television series and television commercials. Louise is currently working with young actors at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Brisbane.

Ripe old age NO matter how old we are now, we are all aging - but not at the same rate. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, say our genes contribute to only about 25% of the aging rate. Stress also causes inflammation when the ‘fight or flight’ hormones are released, and there is no physical activity to process them. The modern lifestyle does not help as we are usually sitting still when we are stressed and the stress is often long term e.g. debt, family worries, work pressures. Chronically elevated levels of cortisol eventually take their toll with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep distur-

bances, anxiety and poor concentration”.

Cutters celebrate 2016 Season EVERYTHING must come to an end, and what a night it was at the Cutters Rugby League presentation night. On Saturday the 24th September, all the Cutters came together to celebrate the season, and of course, to see who won the trophies at presentation night.

The Legends of League are coming to Noosa on the 3rd & 4th of February 2017 including twenty former Australian players such as Petero Civoniceva, Scott Prince, Robbie O Davis, Nathan Blacklock, John Hopoate, Cliff Lyons, David Peachey, Ashley Harrison, Dallas Johnson, Max Krilich and many more players with over 3500 games played between them and will play against Noosa & District past legends players such as Mick Plant, Noel Goldthorpe, Greg Christensen, Anthony Zipf, Shane Payne, Russell Britten, Gary Hill, Matt Black and many more.

The event will coincide with the naming of the top 20 players

of all time from Noosa and district as it’s the 50th playing year for the Pirates. This will be at the Gala Dinner at Leisure Centre on the Friday 3rd February (very limited seating). All Legends players will be at this dinner. The Saturday event will also be a Noosa Rugby League Reunion for all Pirates players in Junior & Seniors.
