Pretty in pink in the precinct

Participants donned their pinkest outfits for the fun run trail to raise funds for breast cancer research THE Cooroy Future Group, in partnership with Noosa Library Service and the Friends of Mill Place hosted the Pink Precinct Fun Trail for the National Breast Cancer foundation this morning.

Over 100 entrants paid a gold coin donation to enter, dressed in pink then embarked on a fun trail around Cooroy. All ages and fitness levels participated in the fun, with prams and canines joining in, in teams , or with new friends. Groups represented including staff and students from Noosa District High school, the local fire serv-

ice, after hours care and more came to help raise funds and awareness for the foundation.

Year 9 student Blake Chapman took out first placing, sprinting through the trail and earning himself a Fitbit as his prize.

Noosa Councillor Jess Glasglow was the second person to cross the line and he kindly donated his Fitbit prize to NDSHS Year 12 Coordinator Bridge Muir for being the first woman to complete the fun run.

Rhys Lloyd received a voucher for being the

best dressed competitor.

Personal stories of brave battles with cancer were shared and the pink trail participants were entertained with a tai chi demonstration at the completion of the event.

All participants were reminded to take part in breast cancer checks, as cancer can does not discriminate or target a specific gender or age.

A mobile Breast Screen service will be set up in Cooroy in late November.

event by donating prizes or by donating directly to the National Breast Cancer foundation. THE Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival was a huge success, with over 2,000 walkers climbing the mountain. The weather was ideal and the festivities at the base of the mountain only added to the success of the day.

No event of this nature would be possible without assistance and, at the top of the list is Mr. Peter Lavin, who offered his total support.

What Christmas tree?

COUNCIL workers Julia Cruickshank and Damon Makieg (pictured left) had a lucky escape last Tuesday when they just missed out on getting run down by a 4 wheel drive as it slammed into the Christmas Tree on the Maple Street Roundabout. The pair had just been planting out some new greenery on the roundabout moments before the accident happened.

Police are still investigating the cause.

In an Australian-first Noosa Library Service last year recruited a NAO humanoid robot to provide fun and practical robotics and computer programming training for adults and young people.

The $18,000 robot,

funded by a grant through the State Library’s Technology Trendsetter 2015 funding program, is the face of the Library’s Robots for Everyone training program.

“We’ve extended the technology program to include Tech Savvy training, coding instruction and workshops using smaller robotics and electronics as we continue to assist people in our community to develop the skills needed to use emerging technology.”

Volunteer to help develop new Arts & Heritage Plan RESIDENTS with a passion for the arts, culture and heritage are needed to create a new Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan for Noosa Shire.

Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the aim was to help Noosa’s arts, cultural and heritage sectors grow and prosper.

“The arts, in their many forms, and our heritage play a vital role in enhanc-

ing our quality of life and defining who we are. We need to nurture them,” Cr Wilkie said.

“This new plan will spell out ways to get more people involved and build the skills of existing heritage, cultural and arts organisations.

“The plan aims to help strengthen our creative arts industries and identify how we can best honour and

preserve our heritage,” Cr Wilkie said.

“Experience tells us that the best way to develop a plan like this is to engage with the community. We’re inviting residents to nominate to work alongside people from state government, the education sector and our Council.”

Reference group members will need to attend five or six meetings be-

tween December 2016 and September 2017, with the possibility of completing some tasks outside of meeting times.

Workshop to consider Cooroy Memorial Hall’s future COUNCIL will hold a community workshop this month to consider the future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall.

At last week’s Ordinary Meeting, Council agreed to take over from Cooroy RSL as trustee of the Hall.

The Hall has been closed for some time because of safety concerns.

Mayor Tony Wellington is calling on residents to join councillors and Council staff at the brainstorming session.

“Restoring the Hall is certainly an option,” Cr Wellington said. “But if the community decides the land could be better used, perhaps as a memorial park or a playground, then we’ll happily look at those ideas too.”

“A recent building inspection revealed that we’d need to spend around $400,000 on the hall just to get it to a safe condition,” the Mayor said.

“To restore the building properly, and give Cooroy a hall it can truly be proud of, we’d need to spend between $800,000 and $1 million.”

Cr Frank Pardon also believes it is important that the community has a say on the Hall’s future.

“Let’s be honest, historically the Hall was an important part of the social life of Cooroy. But over the last few decades it hasn’t been properly maintained and it has been used less and less.

“If the cost to reopen it was $100,000 I wouldn’t blink. I’d say to Council ‘let’s fix it up and open the Hall as soon as possible’.

But with the cost potentially up around the $1million mark, we need to think carefully about the Hall’s future. That’s why we need to find out what the community wants and be absolutely sure that there is a real need for the building,” Cr Pardon said.

The public workshop on

Councillors held their Ordinary meeting at The Hub in Cooroy last with with the future of our hall one of the agenda items Saturday, November 26, will start at 9.30 am. It will be held in the Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy.

“We’ll start the workshop with a brief update and then residents can put forward their own ideas,” Cr Wellington said. “They can also discuss those concepts with councillors and Council staff. And if there are any would-be benefactors interested in helping get

the hall open and operating, we’d love to hear from them.”

The community built Cooroy Memorial Hall in 1926 in memory of soldiers killed in the Great War. Since 1979 the Cooroy RSL has been trustee of the Hall. In recent years it has fallen into a state of disrepair, and was closed in November 2015.

“Although there are some

constraints regarding the use of both the land and the building, we are very keen to gauge what the Cooroy community’s priorities are.

This is about Council working with residents to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone. The consultation process worked well with the Cooroy Butter Factory and I believe it can work for the Memorial Hall as well,” Mayor Wellington said.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS It seems a little to easy to criticise the actions of young people in the Cooroy area. There are better and worse in all groups, so perhaps a gentle brickbat to those prone to making generalised complaints.

At Lake Macdonald Park, around 1 pm on Saturday, 4 carloads of young p platers arrived and the young men of the group set about creating a feast on the barbies. The unusual thing was that after cooking, one of the young men took to cleaning the barbies with some vigour.

Water from the adjacent tap, a couple of cloths and a fair amount of elbow grease had them looking their best....a final clean up of the area saw these young people leave the area looking better than they had found it.

Well done guys....if only many older people followed your example! An example for the rest of us in public recreation areas....leave them at least as clean as you find them please?

DO you want to know how happy Noosa Shire residents are? Well, the Mayor does. Mayor Tony Wellington is calling for Noosa residents to participate in a regional survey that will help establish Noosa’s overall wellbeing.

“If one were to summarise the role of council, it could be argued that our true purpose is to support the wellbeing of our residents,” Cr Wellington said.

“In many ways that is council’s focus. Whether it’s through improving services, supporting community groups, providing the best facilities or encouraging appropriate development, fundamentally council seeks to make decisions that help residents enjoy their lives.

“I think it’s therefore important for us to see how our community feels about living here in Noosa. This will also give us a benchmark to determine our progress in the future.”

The survey, run and analysed by the University of Canberra, will create specific data for Noosa. If over 100 responses are received, the University can also compare the Noosa findings with other local government areas.

“Completing this survey will provide an opportunity for us to hold a mirror to ourselves. It will ask big questions such as how we feel about our society, our health, our access to services and more,” the Mayor said.

“Governments tend to use statistics such as employment levels, economic growth and GDP to measure success. All of these measurements really underpin one overwhelming aim, and that is to maintain or improve the wellbeing of citizens.”

The University of Canberra’s mission in running the Regional Wellbeing Survey is to support research that improves the wellbeing and quality of life of people living in rural and regional Australia.

Everyone aged 18 or over who takes part in the survey can enter the draw to win one of 20 prizes worth a total of $9,000.

“The more residents who participate, the more accurate the overall results will be. I am really looking forward to finding out how Noosa’s happiness levels compare with other regional locales,” Cr Wellington said.

COOROY RAG THE 13th annual Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix wasn’t for the faint hearted. Warm sunshine and light spring breezes greeted last Sunday’s racegoers, but it was the clash of the ‘pollies’ that drew the crowd and the fans didn’t go home disappointed.

event. But once the helmets went on and the flag was raised, the competition was on. Both elected officials participated in a race to kick start the event.

It was Peter (Wellington) who took home the trophy – presented by event sponsor, Geoff Edwards from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, and it was all in aid of raising funds for the college. Races for all ages ran throughout the day and the kids surely slept well after a lot of pushing.

When not racing, students were kept entertained by the carnival atmosphere – fairy floss, camels, face painting, balloon twisting, a mechanical bull and various inflatable activities kept kids busy and happy all day. While the kids were playing, parents were able to browse the Mon-

ster Garage sale and various market stalls or simply sit in a shady spot sipping a coffee. The Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix has gone from strength to strength in recent years and is proud to be an attraction that draws even interstate visitors to the Sunshine Coast. Many local businesses have proudly sponsored Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix over the years.

This year the major sponsors included the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Living Valley Springs Health Retreat and Gympie Eye Centre.

Thoughts now turn to the Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix 2017 and getting the word out.

Cooroy RV Park popular THE Cooroy RV Park has been very popular with hundreds of visitors pulling in for a short stay and using it as a base to explore Noosa and our hinterland. As the Park is still on trial until January 2017, Caretaker Dave has set up a letterbox for travellers to drop their shopping dockets into so we can get a rough idea of what money is being spent in and around our town. For the month of September these

FORMER young Australian Rider of the Year, Sally Collins has moved into Silver Horse Park, Cooroy with her husband Rod and two daughters Grace and Bonnie. They are looking forward to becoming a big part of the local community.

In particular, Sally has fallen for one of these young horses, a 3 year old Warmblood, TS Skyfall by 007 (pictured).

Communicating with your partner in times of separation or divorce should be approached in a professional manner. It is tempting to mud-sling, particularly with children involved, but stay away from this type of communication. Always take the “high” road approach to communication, whether in person or digitally, no matter how difficult it may seem.

DON’T Forward Emails from Your Lawyer: Passing on communication from your lawyer to others may waive your privilege to keep conver-

sations with your lawyer private and confidential.

Only send lawyer-client communications on to others if it is first approved by your lawyer.

DO Use Social Networking Sites Cautiously: According the Australian Bureau of Statistics there are now approximately 24 million Australians, with 15 million of those having a Facebook account.

This means 62.5% of the total Australian population has a Facebook account. Accessing Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr is easier than ever via your computer, smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

You should assume everything you post online can be accessed by your partner or your partner’s lawyer, regardless of security features or privacy settings. Remember, that once something is online, it is essentially impossible to fully remove it.

DON’T Break Into Your Spouse’s Personal Information: Using electronic surveillance programs to “check-up” on your spouse may seem wellintentioned and harmless to a degree, but the fruits of such efforts are potentially useless when it comes to the Court of law. The same often applies to unauthorized access to your spouse’s email accounts. In truth, these actions may subject you to civil and criminal penalties, and further, this information may be inadmissible in Court.

DO Secure Your Devices and Accounts: If your spouse knows or could guess your passwords, it is time for these details to change. Reset all passwords on your computers, email accounts, smartphones, tablets, and other online accounts.

Often some of these features “automatically” let you sign in. It may be wise to refrain from pressing the “remember me” button. It is also a good idea to turn off the location settings on your mobile device.

Be sure to “unfriend” persons on Facebook that may be giving information to your partner, and change your privacy settings.

IT’S heading towards the busy travel season and many of us will be heading out on a road trip. Whether you’re driving a short distance or across the country, here are some tips to ensure that your car is prepared for your next adventure.

Schedule a checkup. Perform basic maintenance on your vehicle before you head out such as checking wipers and fluid levels. Also, schedule any necessary service such as oil changes or tune ups. A vehicle in top shape will have a better chance of staying reliable and efficient.

Stay charged. Check your battery to make sure it’s strong and has clean terminals: A little baking soda and water will do the job. A road trip is no fun if your car won’t start.

Read the rubber. Inspect your tires for any tears or bulges in the side wall. The tyres should have a good amount of tread left. Make sure the tyre pressures are right.

Have your mechanic inspect your car’s brake pads to make sure they aren’t worn or need replacing.

Check your vehicle’s load capacity to make sure you aren’t putting too much weight in the car. Be aware that fuel economy is reduced with extra cargo. Roof-top cargo boxes should only be filled with light bulky items. Heavy loads on the roof can make the vehicle more difficult to handle in emergency situations and increase the risk of a roll over.

Be patient. During busy travel times expect to hit traffic. It may make sense to drive late at night or early in the morning to avoid the rush and ensure you get to your destination on time and with minimal stress. Make sure you count on stops for refreshment and restroom breaks, and time your fuel stops to ensure you don’t run low. A GPS device with traffic information and an exit guide can help you navigate around congestion and help find desired pit stop locations.

Be safe. Make sure you are driving safely and follow the rules of the road.

Pomona Pacers eagerly joined into the fundraising cruise for Breast Cancer Research.

NOOSA River and Canal Cruises have once again donated their craft, their time and their expertise to help our Cooroy community fundraise for Breast Cancer Research.

For four years now, Gary and Kym Logan have supported the Cooroy lady golfers in their efforts to top up the money raised during their “Tee off for Breast Cancer Research” golf day.

Champagne flowed and tapas were passed around as this group of merry makers sang to the tunes of yesteryear.

What better way to enjoy a full moon cruise on the beautiful Noosa River watching the sun set to the west while the moon rises to the east?

The Pomona Pacers were keen to help too, so were quick to book their seats on board. A good decision as the boat was quick to fill.

Many dollars were raised in just over an hour for Breast Cancer Research.

The iconic school already boasts a strong sus-

tainable living program that ensures the nurture of students for today and tomorrow, but last week’s events gave the 67 students at the school memories that will last another 100 years.

The centenary celebrated

four schools over the 100 years that have now become the one school as we now know it today Kin Kin State School, Kin Kin Junction School, Moran Group School and Wahpunga School.

Last Sunday, young and old celebrated together and four models of the four schools were on show after being created in scale form for the celebrations.

These were sold on the day, but purchased by the Kin Kin Community Group for $500 for the school to have for display for future school students. Famed businessman, Tom Grady was on hand to be auctioneer for the day and added his usual energy and personality to proceedings.

Celebrations started with the opening of the time capsule from the 75th birthday celebrations, where everyone who attended the school in 1991 wrote a letter to themselves. The past students came from everywhere and the stories flowed, mostly on of the value of a good Noosa hinterland education.

ADRIAN Williams, swim school operator at Eumundi Aquatic Centre, has been coaching/teaching swimming for over 20 years and has been involved in several highly successful swim programs. He has been assistant coach to Olympic greats Michael Klim, Gianne Rooney and Grant Hackett as well as coaching his own swimmers to Australian Open teams and Paralympic Teams.

“We all know the importance of water safety and the swim safe message has been getting out there for a while now but there are many benefits of learning to swim outside of water safety,” said Adrian.

“As a swim school operator for almost 15years I know the social, physical and psychological benefits of swimming lesson. However Griffith University has recently concluded a 4 year

study in the effects of early childhood swimming lessons. The project focused on the under-5s and employed a number of research strategies to formally explore a strong observation by coaches and teachers in the swim industry that young swimmers are more confident, more articulate, more social and perhaps even a little ‘smarter’ than their nonswimming peers.

Adrian advises not to just rely on your child’s primary school to teach your child to swim.

“In most primary schools in Qld swimming in term 4 is the norm. Most school programs run for a maximum of 10 lessons each running for 45 to 60mins.

In that time you might have 10-15 students to an instructor. Thus giving your child up to 6mins of individual attention per class (if they are good instructors), Over 10 lessons at the most that’s 60mins of teaching time every year. Is that going to be enough to have your child water safe?

Water safe as determined as being able to swim 100m un-assisted.

If you decide to send your kids to a swim school, Adrian has a

Maleny went into bat and through some great fielding from all boys especially Marty and Riley, they were out for 98.

After changing up the batting order, we lost 3 quick wickets.

With Oscar, Ryan and Zac making some great shots finding the boundary many times each to get us to an extra 104.

We started the 2nd bowling innings with Lachie on a hat trick in the first over.

With some great fielding from Jack stopping boundaries, we held Maleny to an extra 85.

Golf: Nomads donate $20,000 to NDSHS THE Noosa District State High School Support Unit received a donation of $20,000 from the Sunshine Coast Nomads Golf Club, which was raised by 82 social golf club players.

The golfers will be donating the money to the NDSHS Support Unit to help fund a mini bus for the students.

The money raised is an increase of over $6000 from last year and was mainly funded by a charity golf day held at Twin Waters Golf Course on August 26. The rest of the money raised came from a raffle the club held throughout the year as

well as donations from the club members themselves.

NDSHS School Principal Chris Roff was overwhelmed with the amount raised by the Nomads Golf Club.

Nomads Golf Club is an International group, with 360 members in Australia, who all enjoy golf, whilst raising money for charity. The Nomads on the Sunshine Coast have 82 members who play once a month at different venues across the coast.

World Title and TKO for Impact IMPACT Boxing Academy boxer Tyler Blizzard travelled with coach Mark Evans to Launceston Tasmania two weeks ago to compete on the undercard of the Daniele Geale v Ronald Quinlan World Title Fight. Tyler who originally hails from Launceston was the main event on the undercard.

Tyler’s opponent was the big punching Bradley Collins from NSW. In what was described as the fight of the night, Tyler was awarded the victory by way of a unanimous points decision. “Tyler boxed the best he has ever boxed. Bradley Collins had a height and reach advantage over Tyler so our plan was to be evasive and attack from different angles. Everything that we have been working on in the gym leading up to this fight, Tyler put into play perfectly. He is currently a real chance to gain selection for the Commonwealth games in 2018 at 52kg,” Coach Mark Evans said.

Lachine Proctor has made a statement on debut for Impact Boxing when he climbed into the ring last weekend at the Caboolture Boxing Club’s tournament. From the opening bell Lachie set the pace forcing his opponent onto the back foot as he pressed forward landing some big shots. AS you all know the game of lawn bowls has been a very popular game for many many years considered to be only for the old and retired.

We are now seeing a lot of interest from the younger generation with a lot of our Queensland and Australian teams being supported by teenagers and this is great to see.

Some clubs are struggling to survive due to the lack of interest in their community and this is very sad. Cooroy is one of these clubs so we are asking for your help. We need more players to ensure the sport we love continues. So if you have ever considered trying bowls now is your chance.

The Impact Boxing Academy will be show casing their skills when the club host their annual Young Guns boxing tournament at the Noosa District State High School on November 5th. First bout will get under way at 3pm. “This tournament continues to grow each year with clubs from all over Australia attending and now New Zealand are sending a team also. It’s the one tournament that these kids get to compete in front of their home crowd. The support that we get from our local community is amazing and definitely appreciated. This event is family friendly and we encourage everyone to come along and show your support. Tickets available at the door. I look forward to seeing you all there,” Mark Evans said.
