The festival is a colourful and creative experience for all ages and offers a unique free weekend of activities.

Amazing full body painting offers a spectacular backdrop to a fun filled two-day packed program of music, dancing, interactive art and street performers.

The Noosa Outback Main Stage has entertainment from the likes of The Moonsets, Baja, Pineapple Crush, Let’s Dance Latin and Jamison Kehl.

Gubbi Gubbi Dance will be providing cultural entertainment and workshops including aboriginal style body art, ochre painting and storytelling.

For anyone interested in trying their hand at creating art from recycled materials, Reverse Garbage are conducting wearable art workshops each day from 10am to 3pm providing materials, tools and inspiration. On Sunday there is also a parade of the amazing wearable art competition with full costumes made from recycled materials.

There is even a play zone with children’s shows, giant games like Jenga & Connect 4, workshops and laser assault skirmish.

It’s an event like nothing ever seen before, as human canvases take shape during the competitions. It’s unique, it happens once a year and it is right here!

Skate Aid adds fun to Fusion Festival

Heath, Tex and sister Eadie with Fusion Festival President Jim Ennis and Brenda Gladwood (Cooroy Rag editor) are all enthusiastic about the Festival’s skate demonstration being sponsored by The Cooroy Rag Each year Cooroy Fusion Festival throws something new into the mix of fantastic entertainment and activities. This year is no different with demonstrations by Skate Aid in the Apex Park skate park being added to the program thanks to the sponsorship of Cooroy Rag.

“In anticipation of the soon to be built Hinterland Playground, this year Cooroy Fusion Festival is on the move from Mill Place across the road to Apex Park. Because of the fantastic skate park in the new location, we felt it made sense incorporate some skate demonstra-

tions,” explained festival chairperson, Jim Ennis.

“We are all about giving back to the community at Cooroy Rag and we couldn’t imagine a better way of doing that than by contributing to our local youth - after all they are the future of our community.

The Skate-Aid initiative

provides skating skills but it also is aimed at inspiring creativity, developing confidence and enabling connection and a sense of community for the kids and those are really important life lessons,” said sponsor Brenda Gladwood from Cooroy Rag. “We’ve also extended an invitation to Australian champion skater Jackson Pilz, to give a demonstration and we’re all very excited that he has agreed, depending on his sponsor commitments, so watch this space.”

Skate-Aid Australia is aimed at building pathways to independence and inclusion through education and community development.

Their primary focus is enabling young people to find better pathways in life by building context and connection to education and inclusion through the relational bridge of skateboarding helping to overcome disadvantage, reduce dependency and build for a brighter future.

This is just one of the great activities at Cooroy Fusion Festival on May 11, which includes a huge program of entertainment and fun throughout town at Apex Park, Cooroy Library, The Butter Factory Arts Centre, the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show at the CWA Hall; the Lifeline Denim

It’s a dirty job so we’d like to thank those who do it!

Around 400 volunteers turned out across our region to pick up over 6 tonnes of other people’s rubbish as part of Clean Up Australia Day. The hinterland was once again fully behind Clean Up Australia Day with sites in Kin Kin, Cooroy, and Pomona recording good numbers of volunteers to Clean Up their community and the Sunshine Coast 4WD Club were largely responsible for remoiving the large volume of rubbish from illegal dumping sites in Yurol Forest near Pomona.

An amazing job yet again from our team of volunteer co-ordinator Joe Jurisevic, NICA manager Gill Studdock and the 24 dedicated NICA site supervisors who coordinated the volunteers that turned up at sites across the region. It was a heartening example of the community turning out to tackle the rubbish that is dropped or dumped in our environment.

The data collected from all the Noosa CUAD groups recorded that over 5 tonnes of rubbish was removed from our environment, with 4 tonnes of illegal dumping removed from local forests and 1 tonne of litter from the river, wetlands, parks and streets, over 300kgs of which was diverted from landfill and recycled.

There was much excitement at Noosa Christian College this month when it was discovered the turtle eggs that had been laid under a shipping container near the groundsman’s shed, had hatched.

These gorgeous hatchlings were found running around near the Primary classrooms. The teachers and students collected them up, all 14 in total, in a container with creek water and rocks and all students got to see them before they were released back into the creek.

A local wildlife expert who has worked with turtles in the area for 40 years was called. She said it was rare for these Saw Shell Turtles to be born in this way, especially at a school.

Hazel, Graeme, Gwen and Peggy enjoyed catching up at this month’s Scone Time Fast becoming the new social scene for Seniors, the monthly ‘Scone Time’ at Cooroy Memorial Hall is a great place for Seniors to get together with old friends and make new friends whilst enjoying some light entertainment and a delicious Devonshire tea.

Cooroy intersections consultation concludes Transport and Main Road’s (TMR) community consultation in relation to the intersections of Diamond and Elm Street and Myall and Elm Streets has recently closed.

Marty Hunt MP (Member for Nicklin) advises he has now been provided with a briefing on the results of the consultation.

“TMR has advised that the results of the consultation demonstrate that the majority of people who participated in the consultation process are against traffic lights as the solution to the safety issues at these intersections.

“It is clear that the community is divided on what will be the best treatments for these intersections.

TMR advise they believe that traffic lights are the

best solution for both intersections, but also the only real option for consideration in the short to medium term budgets.

“As I have said before, I am here to represent the community’s wishes. One thing the community agrees is that safety at these intersections must be improved as soon as possible.

“I am meeting with TMR and Tony Wellington (Noosa Mayor) to discuss where to from here and will continue to keep the community informed,” Mr Hunt said.

For many people, the idea of saving money is very difficult.

However, it is one of the most important things that you can do in order to prepare for your financial future.

At Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches we often have customers tell us they find it much easier to pay back a debt than to set aside funds for savings.

In the next couple of columns, I’m going to share thoughts on what to save for, why to save and how to save.

Let’s start with reasons to save, which will differ in importance depending on your age and stage of life, family and career commitments and shortand long-term goals. So, in no particular order: 1. Save for a new car – yes, you can apply for finance to purchase a car, either through your bank or the dealer, however this may become a never-ending cycle, by the time you finish paying out your loan, you will probably be ready for a new car, and a new loan. Also, you have better bargaining power if you can pay cash.

2. Save for an emergency – life is unpredictable and unexpected events, such as car repairs, medical issues or a job loss may blow out the budget and the credit cards. Experts recommend that you put aside

between three and six months of expenses as an emergency fund, however if this is too steep, try to set aside at least $1,000.

3. Save for fun – life can’t be all work, work, work, and it is important to have fun. Whether you fancy a luxury holiday, a trip through Europe or a boat, saving for big ticket luxury items gives you something manageable, and exciting to aim for.

After all, you don’t want to have to keep paying for your holiday for years after the tan fades.

4. Save for a deposit on your home – the more you can save prior to the purchase of your new home, the more bargaining power you will have when it is time to buy. Saving a significant amount toward a deposit may mean you can afford a bigger home, your interest rates may be lower, and you may be able to avoid the expense of Lenders Mortgage Insurance.

5. Save for your education – on average, workers change careers between 3 and 7 times during their lifetime and often this means a return to further education, either to gain new skills in a different area, or for a post-graduate degree in their chosen field. Changes to government policy may mean that further study is exempt from HECS-HELP assistance.

6. Save for retirement – whether years away, or just around the corner, the best time to start saving for your retirement is right now. With the benefits of compounding interest, the sooner you start, the quicker your retirement nest egg will build. Sort out your superannuation accounts, and if possible, try to match your employer’s contributions.

Think about talking to a financial advisor to check that you are on the right path.

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society One of my favourite orchids is Cattleya’s as they are the plant most people think of when you say orchids. The Cattleya group of orchids originate from South America where most of them grow as ephytes (grow on trees).

The genera has been hybdrised for over a 100 years or more, so these plants are well adapted to growing in this area without any special requirements.

They will grow on suitable host trees or may be grown in a pot. When growing in pots you must remember to provide all nutrients and water. The plants should be repotted every 2 years as the potting mixes, which are mainly pine bark break down. When potting you must have good drainage as these plants grow on trees and when they rain stops the roots dry quickly.

To see more of these plants plus many other varieties, the Noosa Club is conducting a show in Cooroy on the 10th and 11th May (Mother’s Day show) There will be 100’s of orchids on show and for sale. The club is pleased to be part of Cooroy Fusion.

ond Saturday of each month starting at 1 pm. It is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn how to cultivate orchids. It is a great hobby.

Students strike for change

on trend for Autumn Molly, Joa, Stevie and Ruby are calling on the Government to say no to fossil fuels On Friday March 15 tens of thousands of Australian school students from hundreds of schools in almost 60 cities and towns across Australia joined students from 100 countries to strike from school, calling on all politicians to stop Adani’s coal mine, say no to all new fossil fuels and power Australia with 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Students from Noosa District High School marched at Peregian Beach along with hundreds of other students from across the Sunshine Coast to add their voices to the protest.

“We’re all worried about climate change,” said NDSHS Year 12 student Ruby Taylor.

“It felt good to be able to participate in something that might bring about change. As an individual, and a young person, you sometimes feel like there’s not much you can do and that’s frustrating. But this march was something that maybe, hopefully, will let our Government know how we feel.

“After all, it’s our future we’re trying to protect.”

Raising dust and dollars

Working for Noosa Communities

Len Clarke, along with his trusty co-driver Steve Smith, is once again raising funds for the Endeavour Foundation. For the 11th year in a row Len is raising dust and dollars competing in the Great Endeavour Rally from July 26 to August 3.

The pair were overall course winners last year and hope to emulate the win this year.

Starting from the Bundaberg Rum Distillery they’ll be travelling on roads very few have driven.

Across Central Queensland through savanna grasslands towards Julia Creek known as the “Gateway to the Gulf” then on to Karumba before heading back towards the South Coast to Undara, tackling the Great Dividing Range before finishing in Townsville.

Over the years Len, who turns 80 this year, has raised more than $70,000 for the Endeavour Foundation through his participation in the Great Endeavour Rally.

Shaving for a cure Five Noosa District SHS students bravely took on the challenge of Shaving for a Cure to help raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Max Mellin, Jeff Johnson, Zac Browrigg, Ellie Barty and Jarod Archdall shed their locks and raised a total of $676 with Jarod also parting with his beard and eyebrows for the cause.

18th century poet Alexander Pope once said “Gardening is landscape painting” and the opportunity to add ‘paint’ and texture to your own garden canvas will present at the Noosa Botanic Gardens Plant Sale at the end of this month.

At the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends propagation shed a wide variety of standard and collectable plants will be on sale.

David Lee, the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends Propagation Team Leader said “In addition to a good variety of ferns, shrubs, indoor plants, hoyas and bromeliads, we have some superb collectables that enthusiasts and Garden Club members love.

Some of these include the starburst bush, the tree lotus, the rabbits foot fern, the mu oil tree, the red ornamental pineapple and

the purple shamrock.”

President Jill Brownlee explained “We had our first sale from our propagation shed in December and it was a great success with lots of support from locals and keen gardeners across the wider Sunshine Coast region.

These plants are propagated from the Noosa Botanic Gardens or from members’ private gardens and are all suitable for this region.”

Proceeds are reinvested back into the Gardens and related projects of the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends. The Plant Sale is on Saturday 30 March from 8am to 11am at the Friends Propagating Facility at the Noosa Botanic Gardens on Lake Macdonald Drive.

Kimberly behind the new-look bar at Saw & Mill Saw and Mill has reopened its doors and patrons have not been disappointed with the new look.

Kimberly Bateman , manager of Saw and Mill restaurant , closed the doors a year after taking over the space to do a complete overhaul and the restaurant now reflects a modern, soft country feel.

“Though it was a beautiful, large space it had an empty feel to it,” said Kimberly.

Now with oversized rustic exposed beams being added to the ceilings, soft white wood panelling and rock featured throughout. The bar has been completely redesigned and refitted and a much needed wooden slatted screen feature, situated between the restaurant and the bar, has created the privacy and intimate feel the restaurant was lacking.

The new décor and furniture, including comfortable sofas, has brought out the personality of the Saw and Mill, and adds to any gathering, from dining in the restaurant , which is open for lunch Friday , Saturday and Sundays and Dinner - Tuesday To Saturday; socialising around the bar area with icy cold beverages and cocktails; enjoying a game of pool on the new tables; or trying your

hand at a game of lawn bowls.

Chef, Paul Longmate, has released his new menu with the reopening and with delights such as an Entrée choice of Noosa Earth Mushroom Arancini, Sesame Coated Salmon for mains, classic Chicken Parmigiana, Vegan dishes and the ‘From the Grill’ section with Black Angus 300gm Rib fillet or the 18 hours slow cooked 240gm sirloin as a couple of options to choose from, it has already been a big hit with regular diners. Coast resident and proud grandfather, Paul, said he was delighted that Maestro Antoni Bonetti had invited his 15-year-old Sydney-residing granddaughter, Beatrice, to be the feature soloist for Noosa Or-

chestra’s autumn concerts.

Paul said he was honoured to be playing viola for Noosa Orchestra, which will support Beatrice in her solo performance of Rondo Capriccioso and Allegro VivaceKhachaturian.

“Beatrice also loves playing the Khachaturian Violin Concerto , it’s an exciting piece with a fast movement at the end, a real ‘edge of your seat’ musical moment.”

Musicality is certainly in this talented teen’s genes.

Her Australian mother, Laura, and Italian father, Mauro, met while studying piano at the Moscow Conservatorium. Beatrice picked up her first violin, a diminutive ‘64th’, at age three and learnt to play by the Suzuki method.

“If Beatrice was able to learn to speak English and Italian so perfectly in the accent of her parents, then she should be able to learn music the same way. That’s the underlying philosophy of the Suzuki method. It

worked well for both my daughter, who’s a very fine pianist, and for Beatrice.”

At 13 Beatrice was leading the Ascham School orchestra (where she is a full music scholar) and at 14 she attained her L.Mus.A Diploma with Distinction (2017).

Beatrice is also an accomplished singer. Last year she toured with the Sudney children’s choir, Gondwana Voices, in the Baltic States and Iceland.

“She plays everything by ear, and like the Italian side of the family, she is pitch perfect, this means that when she hears a bell ring, she knows what note it is; very useful for a player of a stringed instrument,” says Paul.

No stranger to the international stage (Italy, England and Japan), Beatrice is a seasoned violin soloist who knows how to move

an audience so they feel every note in their heart.

Now under the tutelage of Russian violinist/teacher from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Iyla Isakovich, Beatrice is surely set to soar musically.

Managing gout Known sometimes as the “rich man’s disease” or “disease of kings” because it is often associated with the intake of too much rich food and alcohol, gout is actually a type of arthritis; that is, it causes inflammation in the joints. It is characterised by recurrent attacks of extreme pain, swelling and redness. A distinct difference between gout and other types of arthritis is that gout happens suddenly, often overnight. Other types of arthritis develop slowly, with gradual worsening of symptoms. The pain from gout can be quite excruciating and sometimes, even the weight of a bed sheet can cause intolerable pain.

Gout is usually caused by the kidneys not flushing uric acid out of the body quickly enough; however, there are many lifestyle tips that may assist you in managing/preventing outbreaks.

Here are a few tips from our LiveLife pharmacists: Maintain a healthy body weight. However, remember that if you do need to lose weight, ensure it is done gradually, as “crash diets” can increase uric acid levels in the body; Cut down on alcohol consumption and avoid binge drinking; Drink plenty of water, as this can help to remove uric acid from the body. Aim for 8 to 16 glasses a day; Exercise regularly; Maintain control over any high blood pressure problems; Try to adjust your diet to limit the intake of “purines” that are thought to cause gout. Consult a dietician for further advice.

To be more specific with diet, the Mayo Clinic have developed what they call a “gout diet” which involves the following important factors to help

you manage this painful condition: Limit meat, poultry and fish. Animal proteins are high in purine.

Avoid or severely limit high-purine foods, such as organ meats, herring, anchovies and mackerel. Red meat (beef, pork and lamb), fatty fish and seafood (tuna, shrimp, lobster and scallops) are associated with increased risk of gout. Because all meat, poultry and fish contain purines, limit your intake to 4 to 6 ounces (113 to 170 grams) daily.

Cut back on fat. Saturated fat lowers the body’s ability to eliminate uric acid. Choosing plant-based protein, such as beans and legumes, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products will help you cut down the amount of saturated fat in your diet. High-fat meals also contribute to obesity, which is linked to gout.

Limit or avoid alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the elimination of uric acid from your body. Drinking beer, in particular, has been linked to gout attacks. If you’re having an attack, avoid all alcohol. However, when you’re not having an attack, drinking one or two 5-ounce (148-millilitre) servings a day of wine is not likely to increase your risk.

Limit or avoid foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Fructose is the only carbohydrate known to increase uric acid. It is best to avoid beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, such as soft drinks or juice drinks. Juices that are 100 percent fruit juice do not seem to stimulate uric acid production as much.

Choose complex carbohydrates. Eat more whole grains and fruits and vegetables and fewer refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, cakes and candy. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products.

Some studies have shown that low-fat dairy products can help reduce the risk of gout.

They played two seasons of six weeks on Friday nights against Coolum and Tewantin teams during the 12 week program.

These programs are fast packed cricket games, 90 minutes play and are designed for equal participation.

There are 6 to 8 players per team. Each player

gets a chance to bat, bowl and field. They also bat in pairs and face 4 overs, 12 balls each. It’s a smaller 14 metre pitch and 20-30 metre boundary. After each over the fielding team rotates. The program is designed to set them up ready for Stage 1 Junior Cricket.

They have had great fun and have shown some great skills and were so enjoyable to watch. Well done boys.

Eumundi Dragons benefit from Council grant

The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Football Club have started their season on a high after purchasing a new machine for the line marking of fields in preparation for home games.

Towards the end of 2018 the line marking was a stressful exercise with the club’s volunteers having to continually fix the old machine which was close to being ten (10) years of age.

Once this old machine became unusable the club had to borrow one from the nearby Noosa Dolphins club in order to host matches.

The shiny new blue machine was purchased as a result of the support of Sunshine Coast Cr. Greg Rogerson (Division 10) who was able to provide the necessary finance through his Councillor Discretionary Fund.

All members of the club are extremely grateful to the council, especially Greg Rogerson, for this support which has ensured hosting of home games at Eumundi is just that little bit easier!

Last week, just before the opening rounds of the 2019 season, Mr Rogerson visited the club to check out the new marker in operation and to wish all members a successful season.

The Dragons started with a roar in the first half, with three unanswered tries, two runaway tries coming from newcomer Jai Clifford.

Brothers bounced back with some tries of their own and we went to half time Dragons ahead 4 tries to 3. The second half was a tighter game and the whole team worked well together. There were strong runs up the field made by Will and Jack Sparks, Tom Wiles, Max JohnsonThompson and Tristan Adams.

Patrick O’Grady, Alex Eaton and Craig Yaxley tackled well. Jet Herbert added to his two first half tries with another in the second half and

made two conversions, taking the team total to 29. Brothers managed another three tries in the second half and pipped the Dragons at the post with a total of 30. It was great to see the team playing well together in their first game of the year – it is looking like 2019 will be a strong year for the U10 Dragons as they continue to improve with the support of their coaches and club.

U9s: Great effort from all the players in the Eumundi Dragons under 9’s. From the kickoff the boys all quickly remembered their positions from last season with new player Lucas quickly adapting to the game. In the first half, the boys played extremely well with lots of strong

defence and good runs for the try line. The second half saw a few tries scored with some excellent tackles to save a few. Some really positive vibes are present in the team with room for a few more players in the coming weeks.

U8s: Played their first game of tackle in a spirited performance against a well drilled Mathew Flinders.

Even though the game was a development round where the referee from Mathew Flinders provided step by step instruction and commentary to both teams, the boys threw themselves into it.

They held a good formation, ran directly (mostly) backed each other up and passed to support. They started to get the hang of the rules of the ruck and defended and tackled well.

Brooklyn Griggs marshalled the players in the back line made some good tackles, runs and tries. Jack Cooper showed no fear when going for the larger opposition, made some great runs and a score. Josh Kuczynski’s first game of rugby showed he will be a great asset to the team with some strong runs through the middle, defence and keenness to get involved.

George Hillhouse produced some length of the field runs, good backing up, effective tackles and ball foraging. Tristian Youd from the under 7s

helped out admirably in the first half, making some great runs and passes.

Great effort by all of the team and coach Dan Cooper.

U7s: Had a great start to 2019 with their first game against Caloundra followed by a second game against Brothers. The team worked really well together and showed great effort despite getting a real work out with some players involved in three games through the morning. Tristan, Zac, Jax, Nya and Henry all had games before helping out Maya and CJ in the U7’s.

The team gelled really well, showing great support for each other and reflecting Luke’s good pre-season work. Tristan, Zac and Cj had some great runs with some awesome support on defence from Nya, Jax, Henry and Maya. Onward and upward for the mighty U7’s.

U6s: The future of our mighty little club seems assured if the performances of our U6s today at Eumundi are anything to go by. Even though this game was the first Rugby that some of them had played all team members did themselves and our club proud.

There were outstanding displays of attack as well as defence. All players contributed with strong performances from Owen, Nya, Jax, Henry, Johnny and Nixon.
