A mountain of entertainment

Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge start line 2018 By Phil Saldais

It’s just over a week to go until the starter gun cracks and around 100 runners take part in this year’s Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Yet, there is so much happening in Pomona this time of year, and the big race is just a capstone to a flurry of other activities going on. The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club has once again put on a fantastic spread of activities for everyone to enjoy at Pomona this winter. The first event to literally roll up along is the Queen of the Mountain Bowls Competition which is held on the 17th of July. The Men’s event, the King of the Mountain Bowls Club Tournament is held later over the weekend of the main festival on the 27th and 28th July. It is a long standing and well supported event that has stood the test of time and brings some of the best bowlers from the Sunshine coast. The future champions of Australia’s mountain running could well be nestled close to the town of Pomona with the Zinc 96 Prince and Princess race taking place

on the Saturday at 2pm, the day before the main event. The event is categorised for 9-13 year olds and it’s a great way for young kids to see if they would one day be interested in tackling the main event as it very closely follows the same course. There are fantastic prizes on offer and if you’re a local in the area, Leslie Webb is conducting training to help competitors get to know the steep and tricky terrain. When the sun rises early on the 28th of July, there will be a flood of activities happening in Pomona. All in anticipation of the build up to the big race. True Value Hardware is supporting the King of the Mountain Bike Ride which gets going at 9am. There’s three levels of difficulty and it’s a great way to see some of the pristine scenery around Pomona. For those who would prefer to run, but not to the top of Mt Cooroora, there’s the Nestle 3km family fun run for those who might want to get in amongst the action and still run some of the main race course. It’s then back to the juniors again with Reid Signage Services hosting the Primary

school relays which is open to all schools in South East Queensland. Last year over 400 children participated! Each participant powers through a 700m loop of Stan Topper Park handing on the baton. It’s a great way to get involved in the spirit of the festival and brings together that friendly competition amongst Queensland Schools. For those who are interested in a corporate gathering, the Raine and Horne Tug o War challenge can sort out those office squabbles with teams of 5 attempting to see who can become ‘King of the Rope’. If you’ve got an eye for fine crafts and antiques, pop in and see Clive and Jane Ford who help host the Antiques and Collectables Fair held over the weekend. Who knows, if you’ve been training and you’ve got a good eye for things, you might win a prize and walk away with something of value as well. Finally, the entire festival culminates in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Having recently been recognised on the Queensland Trail Running

Championships calendar, the big race is sure to grow in its notoriety in the coming years. It truly is an epic race with competitors scrambling uphill from the very start, only to literally run into a trail that slows to a crawl and a single track at times. Runners jostle for position up to that point and hope that all their hard work has paid off before holding their nerve and rapidly descending down the trail holding onto the chain for dear life. The atmosphere is electric right up until the last runner with a certain ‘Hecklers Hill’ bringing home every runner with chants, banter and great enthusiasm. Other highlights include the heritage markets, art exhibitions, Cooroy Rag animal farm, LiveLife Pharmacy Skate Park Competition, amusement rides, local cuisine and live music on the Pomona IGA stage all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona. If anything there has caught your interest, head over to the website or better still go to the Facebook page ‘King of the Mountain’. Hope to see you there! www.kingofthemountain.com.au

KOM: Runners Profile - Andy Town By Philip Saldais Andy Town has been tackling some of the world’s toughest running races most of his adult life. He has been a tough competitor and incredibly fast, even in his older age. I spoke to Andy on his thoughts about his past career, his running and what it means to him to be able to still be competitive in races like the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. You’ve been quite successful both outright and in your age division over the years, so what motivates you to train for such gruelling races? For me it’s about not giving the running away because it’s so good for my wellbeing both mentally and physically. Especially, when you’re running on difficult terrain, because you have to think about where you put your feet. It’s more about - can I be the best in my age division and I choose races where that fact is recognised. As long as I can run I will run. How inspiring is it for you to be so competitive in your later age and do you find it inspiring to beat younger runners (like myself). We used to have some great battles didn’t we? Yeah definitely, although I am struggling to catch the younger blokes now and last year was a big turning point for me. To mentally accept the fact that I can’t continue to have those battles with the younger people, that was difficult to accept. Partly because I’ve always gone into a race to win, and sometimes to my detriment. I have had to accept that I won’t be winning the open grade anymore and if I win my age group I’ll

be super, super happy. I loved the battles with yourself knowing that I could beat you if you had a bad day! Gary Swass was a fantastic runner that you and I both battled with up Pomona over the years. Do you find having a rival makes racing more enjoyable and on that, who has been your greatest racing rival and why? Not specific to Pomona? Well in that case it would have to be Colin Earwicker, so Colin and I have had numerous battles over the years and I’ve always struggled because he’s just managed to sneak in front of me. There was once where I beat him at Kawerau and once at Pomona and they were hugely rewarding. It wouldn’t have mattered where I placed it was more that I’ve beaten the guy who was a former world mountain running champion in his age group. If you can beat someone like that then yeah you’ve gotta be happy. He was my greatest rival without a doubt and a world class runner. Even as an older athlete he was always near the top. What was the most difficult race you’ve ever tackled and why? Has there been any memorable moments out of your control. My greatest race ever was the Luxmore Grunt it’s a 27 km race. I won it and held the record for 14 years. It was something I couldn’t repeat and it was simply a one off. I just ran on adrenaline and just nailed it on the day. Its a well known race internationally too and it was just a special moment for me. What advice would you give someone who is new to running, but later in age, could they pick it up? Where would someone start if they were feeling inspired by your story? Yeah for me it would be to stay away from the roads, I think road running is boring and you get injured. Get into trail-running and train on trails! Get off road get out there and it’s such a huge growth sport. Especially amongst women, some

Andrew Towns - 2018 Time - 30:32 Photo Courtesy Raoul Slater of the races it can be 70% women, they’re looking to have a healthy lifestyle and the races are pretty cheap compared to gyms. The main race, The Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge starts at 2.30pm on Sunday 28 July where 100 competitors enter the gruelling 4.2km race up Mount Cooroora. Introductions start at 1pm at the start/finish line. The festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. Checkout the website for more information www.kingofthemountain.com.au.

Local photographers scoop prize pool The 2019 Australian Body Art Festival saw colour, activity and amazing art and it was all captured by a dozen photographers competing to get the best shots in the photographic competition. This year two local photographers took the winning shots in the two competition categories. Winning the Photo Print Category sponsored by Cooroy RSL was Owen Lyell from Eumundi with his shot of the first prize face painting piece by Yenni Redding. The photograph was captured at the Chinese take away in Cooroy. Monique Vecchio from Cooroy won the Digital Art category sponsored by Gelignite Jacks with a photo of first-time body art entrant Morgan Scott’s Special Effects piece edited onto a ghostly forest background. “The festival is a huge attraction for photographers and as part of the festival we have a photographic competition which is available to a limited number of photographers who get an access all areas pass to capture all the fun of the two-day festival,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. “The theme of Other Worlds this year produced some truly spectacular living artworks and the photographers have captured some beautiful photos. With photographers coming from all over

Australia it was great to see that two local photographers took out the prizes.” This festival is run by the volunteers at Cooroy Chamber of Commerce with sponsorships from Eumundi & District Historical Association, Tourism Noosa, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Wythes Real Estate, Noosa Outback, Sunshine Coast Daily, Outback Queensland Tourism, Wattle Media, Cooroy Supa IGA, Fiducian Financial Services, Face Paint Shop Australia, Regional Training Services Qld, Sunny Coast Accountants, Mehron Australia, Face Paints Australia, The Looney Bin, Derivan, RACV Noosa, SPV Accounting, Butter Factory Arts Centre, Gelignite Jacks, Black Ant Gourmet, Firefly Solutions, Junkies Magazine, The Blacksmiths, Cooroy Menswear & Jeanery, Original Eumundi Markets, Geoff Cook Signs, Mudputty, Not Just Another Salon, and Fairytale Events & Equip4Hire. Kerbside clean up Noosa’s shire-wide kerbside collection has started. Residents are advised that the service is only available to residential properties and unit complexes. Waste Services Manager Wayne Schafer said the kerbside collection would run for eight weeks across different parts of the shire. “An information flyer will be delivered in advance of the collection service to every eligible residence and the collection weeks and what can be presented for service are listed on the council website,” “The collection will be completed Monday to Friday, so its important items are placed on the kerbside on the Sunday, prior to the Monday of the collection week,” he said. This year, three different trucks will collect the waste and residents are asked to separate the items into three different piles on the kerbside. • Useful items easily repaired for reuse by the recycle shop or a charity group • Metal items for recycling • All other rubbish The collection for the different items will happen at different times.

New water meters this month

Garden waste will not be accepted, including prunings or cuttings. Mr Schafer stressed that no demolition or commercial building waste would be collected. “Residents can find a list of what will be collected on Council’s website and we encourage residents to adhere to the limits,” he said. “It’s really ideal to recycle old or unwanted goods or to get rid of those bulky items such as white goods, furniture and other household rubbish. A maximum of three cubic metres per property or 6 cubic metres total per unit complex will be collected. Pick up start date for Cooroy is July 29; Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin and Federal starts August 5.

During July Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Cooran, Cooroy, and Lake Macdonald. This work is part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them prior to replacing the meter. Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a Works Completed card in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. This work is part of Unitywater’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and providing a reliable and safe water supply for its community. For more details visit www.unitywater.com/ maintenance-programs or phone the Unitywater Customer Contact Centre on 1300 086 489.

Traineeships provide valuable skills and qualifications to the trainees but they are also providing value to businesses and our community. Cooroy SUPA IGA and Pomona IGA have had trainees for over a decade in that time have had around 100 trainees through the system and they attest to the value it provides. “Traineeships provide trainees with a better allround knowledge of our business, a feeling of being part of a team, and it provides skills for their future. Providing these types of opportunities for our local youth is part of our commitment to giving back to our local community,” explained Lisa Smith, HR Manager of Cooroy Supa IGA & Pomona IGA. Jessica Axiak who is nearly finished her traineeship and works on registers said, “I’ve really enjoyed the traineeship program. It helps with points for QCE and the knowledge and experience I’ve gained will be valuable for my future.”

Naomi Mayfield who works in the fruit and vegetable and grocery sections and finished her traineeship a few months ago added, “Jess and I were in the same class at Noosa District State High School so we were able to give each other support throughout the program which was great.” “We actually chose Regional Training Services Queensland to provide our traineeships because they are one of the few organisations that deliver the training face to face. Most training organisations have moved to an online platform and it just wasn’t as effective for us. We’ve got a great business relationship with them and the trainees get a lot of support from their trainers,” added Lisa Smith. Harriet Stanfield who started her traineeship when at Noosa Christian College and completed it at Good Sheppard said, “I like the fact that it isn’t an online course and we have a trainer to talk to. I prefer to read and write things down to learn and we also

get to keep the workbooks so that means we can refer back to them in the future.” The completion rate of trainees through Regional Training Services is twice that of the state average. Regional Training Services Queensland Managing Director, David Asher puts that down to the way they deliver the training. “We believe we have such success with our traineeships because of our trainers who establish great rapport with the trainees. If a trainee has a problem or needs assistance the trainer can provide early intervention to help them

through,” explained David Asher, Regional Training Services Managing Director. Dylan Hafey finished his traineeship 2 years ago and still works at Pomona IGA in the meat section and customer service was positive about the support from the trainers too, “Our trainer, Linda Cullen is so helpful and supported me in the program and she was really flexible with doing extra units.” Traineeships are a combination of earning and learning and start in year 10 or 11 with students conducting 50 days of at work

training per year over two years. They are recognised as one of the best ways an employee can achieve a nationally recognised qualification. There are traineeships available in Business, Business Administration, Hospitality, Outdoor Power Equipment, Retail and Tourism. Generous government incentives may be available for employers of eligible trainees also. If you’d like to find out more about having trainees in your business contact Regional Training Services Queensland Pty Ltd on 5481 2486.

Tall Trees exhibition inspires Tall Trees artists inspired the creative crowds that meandered along King Street, Cooran on the weekend of July 6-7. Mia Hacker, one of the organisers of the annual Tall Trees Exhibition said there were moments of triumph for many artists with some finding the courage to exhibit for the first time and others sharing new bodies of works with different styles for the first time. “Talking about your artwork sure does help to get across your creative journey and message even for the more experienced artists,” said Mia. “A big thank you to our Opening Night major Sponsor Cooroy and Pomona Branches of Bendigo Bank. Lots of catch ups and conversations were shared and many good friendships have been created and social networks firmed up. Lots of artworks were sold and some commissioned artwork orders have already been made.” Crowds on Saturday were privileged to join a cultural sharing element on Virtual

Reality headsets. “Immersion in ancient forest and bushland at traditional first nation campsite locations, thanks to Brett Leavy for bringing this awesome element to Cooran for our Community to learn about,” said Mia. “Our Community collaborative painting was popular and so too was the wax wrap making workshop. The pop-up creative zone was a go to point for taking some time to draw, with a self portrait corner with mirrors. The kids loved the making area with tape, wool, texture scratching objects and sticky dots with lots of coloured paper! “Our local Cooran businesses are the best and really welcomed the exhibition of Art throughout the town.”

Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Our business is banking, but community is our purpose. It’s something we hope we do better than most, but when a bank says it has a connection with its community what does it mean? Does it make you suspicious? Is there a catch? Well, the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank is locally owned by our shareholders. Those branches have now returned more than $700,000 to local schools, clubs and organisations in the past few years. How local? To use a timely example, we’re supporting Pomona King of the Mountain again on July 28 and it’s a shining example of a community partnership in action. Be sure to mark your diaries. It’s a similar story with the Noosa Country Show, and we’ll be there again this year when the show rolls around in early September. What about Cooroy State School? Our commitment to the school has included laptops, robotics programs and a partnership with Rotary Club of Cooroy and Cooroy State School in the annual East Timor Shoe Box collection and more. At Pomona State School, similar projects like the robotics programs, Pomona in the Park, new books for the library… and we’re only just getting started. Why? Because we wouldn’t be here without their support, your support. Through our customers’ banking we generate profits that go into supporting recipients just like Cooroy and Pomona State Schools. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing with the hinterland. Our Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches give our communities a real say in their future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. As we work to provide

banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. So, if you’re interested in banking where the customer is connected to the bank, give us a try. We have a full range of products just like any full-service bank and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most. Both our teams will be more than happy to share more of our story with you and deliver the right advice and the products you need. Please feel free to drop into the branches or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona).. You can also email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG Cooroy-Pomona Lions

44 Maple Street, Cooroy

During May and June Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club have been focusing our efforts on the younger members of our community. Pomona State School held their sports carnival in May and had asked the Club for some help with catering on the day. So with our trusty BBQ and pie warmer in the trailer (and all the other bibs and bobs) we made our way up to the oval. We had been prepared to share the profits with the school but one of our members saw an opportunity to help the

school with something they really wanted. Pomona State School has been fundraising for a few years to replace their senior playground. They only had $2000.00 to reach that total. We presented the cheque on parade to rapturous applause. We hope the playground won’t be too far away. Over at Noosa District High School Pomona campus we were invited to make some presentations at their end of term parade.

Museum volunteers needed The Noosa Shire Museum is housed in the original Noosa Shire Council Chambers at 29 Factory Street Pomona. Volunteers are the mainstay of the Noosa Museum, and like most other small historical museums, there is always the need for more. The museum will provide training in all aspects of the work required to be undertaken by Volunteers. Work at the museum is interesting and varied and Volunteers are encouraged to work in the area of their skill base and interests, be it administration, photography, data entry, labelling, research, cleaning, gardening and visitor meet and greet.

Volunteers are also needed for special events, such as, King of The Mountain Festival, excursions, historical walks, fundraising BBQs and specific projects. Being a Volunteer involves commitment – The Museum needs people who can be relied upon to attend on their designated days, and undertake the tasks they agree to do. So don’t sit at home “twiddling your thumbs”. Add some spice to your life. Come and volunteer, learn more about the history of the Noosa Shire, and about how Museums are run. COOROY RAG Irene Vella – the story of her remarkable courage in life Born in 1951 in Warrington England, Irene Vella was afflicted with club feet, born with them rolled under and facing backwards. Throughout her early and later school years Irene underwent numerous operations to bring her feet around to a forward position. Because of this she spent those years in casts and on crutches, and in her adulthood required special boots, as her ankles were permanently fused to a 45 degree angle to the ground. During these years she developed a love and fascination of horses, and through doing stable chores as payments, learnt to ride – defying the restrictions of her feet. Her determination galvanised her, and she would ride her bike 16km to the stables for her les-

sons, and horses became her friends and her life. Unfortunately, during her teens, Irene developed severe scoliosis – which required medical attention. These were the very early operations for this condition, which were fortunately being performed in Liverpool Hospital by a Professor Roff – who became a life-long friend. The procedure was the insertion of a metal rod alongside her spine, with the rod having hooks set into her spine. These operations were then known in the medical world as the ‘Liverpool Coat Hanger’, and now is a very common operation. Horses were ever more the love and fascination of her life, and she excelled at showjumping. Because of this, at 23 years of age, she decided to migrate to Australia, because she knew that horses were still used to work cattle and sheep in the Outback. Packing her life into 2 large trunks, she migrated by herself to Australia. She was the last of the 10 pound Poms, arriving in Brisbane. She came here as a fully trained telephone ‘plug in’ switchboard operator, staying for the short mandatory time she needed to within that position, then headed to the Outback – firstly NSW then QLD, and then into the Northern Territory. Working different jobs among the many cattle and sheep stations, she also competed in bush racehorse meetings and gymkhanas, before ending up in Alice Springs in 1975. There she worked on a few large cattle properties – Jinka and Narwietooma, before taking a position on a tourist ranch – Wallara Ranch, which was the only accommodation for the popular tourist spot of King’s Canyon, but a long time before the new village was built ,and well before bitumen roads. It was here she met her husband-to-be, Ray, who was the resident tour guide in 4x4 buses, and their relationship bloomed. After the tourist season finished, they went to England where Irene’s family was able to see her married. Upon returning to Australia in 1976, they purchased a huge 13 metre special-order caravan – pulled by a truck, and travelled around the Central Australian areas and across Queensland. They eventually purchased a 10 acre block to keep horses on, located near Toowoomba. It was here their daughter Trephina was born to them in 1982. Soon after this, Irene and Ray sold everything, including the caravan, and moved to Alice Springs, where they would stay for another 10 years before buying a farm on the edge of the once-quiet little town of Cooroy, that they had found years earlier. They stayed there for 16 years before they moved to Cooran. In Cooroy another huge chapter of Irene’s life opened up when she met up with two devotees of horses and showjumping, who

matched Irene’s love and passion for the sport and animals – the late John ‘Robbo’ Robertson, and his partner Greta Wilcox, who had a team of showjumping horses, and Irene went around all the local shows, competing in showjumping events with Robbo’s horses. Eventually Robbo came up with the idea that the Sunshine Coast needed its own jump club, and so the Sunshine Coast Showjumping Club was born, with Irene playing a major part in the establishing of this club, being its first Secretary for the five hard grounding years. The Club grew and grew, and others stepped in and elevated the club to where it is now, one of the largest showjumping clubs in the country. During this time Irene competed at every meeting on her own beloved horses and was dedicated to the club and showjumping. She was awarded with one of the Club’s few life memberships. Irene sadly passed away in July 2018, after a long slow battle with complications that had been exacerbated by horse riding injuries sustained over the years that eventually led to a collapse of her scoliosis. She knew the risks but would not have had her life any other way. Her determination never once wavered in her pursuit of the sport and events that gave her life a meaning and pleasure. She is survived by her doting husband Ray of Cooran, and her loving daughter Trephina Tracey of Pomona. Dedicated to a beautiful wife and wonderful Mother, Irene Mary Vella, who passed from this world on July 15 2018. Deeply loved, and even more deeply missed by her husband and daughter. Lived her life to the brightest each day, our shining star.

pomona Pomona branch turns two as bank commits

COOROY RAG While other banks continue to close down their branches in regional Australia, Pomona has celebrated its own bank turning two. Last Friday, Bendigo Bank strengthened its commitment to the town and hundreds of cupcakes created by Pomona Bakery were personally handed out to local businesses by staff and board members to celebrated the milestone. To add to the excitement, the team took the opportunity to announce the branch is now open from 10.00am4.00pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The branch is part of more than 320 Community Bank branches across the country. Senior Branch manager, Simone Flavelle said the Pomona Community Bank branch continues to fill a great local need as the town’s only banking service, but also bringing a sense of unity to Pomona. “I think any town able to provide residents, traders and community groups with an alternative, locallyowned banking option continues to be great thing in

today’s financial climate,” Simone shared. “Bendigo Bank’s commitment to Noosa through its Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin Noosa Community Bank branches has already seen more than $1.1 million given back to our communities, and we’re just getting started. Our Pomona branch offers a full range of banking services - transaction and lending facilities, home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. There’s also opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments, and having our own ATM remains a real plus for locals,” she said. Local word of mouth and award-winning customer service continues to draw great customer support of the branch, and the added excitement of Pomona having a real say in its own financial future. “In 2017, we were delighted to deliver what the Pomona community asked for after the last of the bigfour banks left town. As Australia’s fifth largest retail bank, we want

HARDWARE

Pomona’s purpose-built expansion to continue to grow from strength to strength. We put our profits straight back into Noosa and the hinterland and I think locals are more aware of what we do and what sets us apart from our competitors,” Simone added. Simone went on to say the message is simple - the

more support the Pomona branch receives, the more support will be given to the community. “Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money can go back into the community. As one of Pomona branch’s cus-

tomers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” she concluded. If you have any questions regarding the Pomona Community Bank branch, drop in and see Jo, Ella, Amanda and Simone during opening hours or call 5485 1786.

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness is on the rise in both children and adults worldwide. Currently myopia affects around 80 million children around the world, a figure that is set to rise sharply by 2050. The average onset age of myopia is also getting progressively younger; in 1983 it was 11 years old, whereas in 2000 it was 8 years old. In response, optometry@cooroy is launching a local campaign to create awareness in the community about myopia, how it can be identified and share options proven to slow the progression of myopia in children. Optometrist Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy remarks that “It is really interesting what causes myopia. The two main factors which can mean your child is more at risk are genetics and lifestyle. The chances of your child developing myopia are increased if one or both parents are myopic. However our modern lifestyles which are built on prolonged near tasks can create myopia, including reading and gaming on portable devices. A lack of outdoors activity or spending time indoors with poor lighting levels can also contribute.” Treating myopia early can slow its progression, reducing the potential risk of developing future eye health issues. It is therefore important to look out for the below symptoms. • Distance vision becoming blurry • Reduced performance at school • Tired eyes • Moving closer to the TV • Complaints of headaches • Squinting or screwing eyes up “It is important to note that in many cases, there will be no obvious signs at all that myopia is developing in your child as the signs can be subtle in the early stages” says Jenny. “For decades our optometists have stayed informed on the latest research into myopia prevention and control and

have used this information to direct their treatment programs.” Research has shown that with myopia it is best to try and control the progression by encouraging time out. It is recommended that children spend at least 90 minutes a day outdoors to decrease the risk of developing myopia. optometry@cooroy has been operating at 62 Maple Street for more than a decade. The team has decades of collective experience and is passionate about delivering the most comprehensive level of eye care to the community. optometry@cooroy can be contacted on 5442 5555 and is located at 62 Maple Street Cooroy.

health Anxiety - causes, signs and treatment options

COOROY RAG

Three million Australians are living with depression or anxiety, so it’s important for people to know what to look out for, in case someone needs help. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. In Australia, it is estimated that 45 per cent of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. In any one year, around one million Australian adults have depression, and over two million have anxiety. While depression and anxiety are different conditions, it is not uncommon for them to occur at the same time. Over half of those who experience depression also experience symptoms of anxiety. In some cases, one can lead to the onset of the other. Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are a common response to a situation where a person feels under pressure, it usually passes once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don’t subside. Anxiety is when they are ongoing and exist without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that makes it hard for a person to cope with daily life. We all feel anxious from time to time, but for a person experiencing anxiety, these feelings cannot be easily controlled. As with depression, it’s often a combination of factors that can lead to a person developing anxiety. People who experience anxiety often have a history of mental health problems in their family. However, this doesn’t mean that a person will automatically develop anxiety if a parent or close relative has had a mental illness. Stressful events can also trigger symptoms of anxiety. Common triggers include: job stress or job change; change in living arrangements; pregnancy and giving birth; family and relationship problems; major emotional shock following a stressful or traumatic event; verbal, sexual, physical or emotional abuse or trauma; death or loss of

a loved one. Continuing physical illness can also trigger anxiety or complicate the treatment of either the anxiety or the physical illness itself. Common conditions that can do this include: hormonal problems (e.g. overactive thyroid); diabetes; asthma; heart disease. If there is concern about any of these conditions, ask a doctor for medical tests to rule out a medical cause for the feelings of anxiety. Heavy or long-term use of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines or sedatives can cause people to develop anxiety, particularly as the effects of the substance wear off. People with anxiety may find themselves using more of the substance to cope with withdrawal-related anxiety, which can lead to them feeling worse. Some research suggests that people with certain personality traits are more likely to have anxiety. For example, children who are perfectionists, easily flustered, lack self-esteem or want to control everything, sometimes develop anxiety during childhood or as adults. Everyone is different and it’s often a combination of factors that can contribute to a person developing anxiety. It’s important to note that you can’t always identify the cause of it or change difficult circumstances. The most important thing is to recognise the signs and symptoms of anxiety and to seek help. The sooner you seek help, the sooner you can recover. The symptoms of anxiety are sometimes not all that obvious as they often develop gradually and, given that we all experience some anxiety at some points in time, it can be hard to know how much is too much. Some common symptoms include: hot and cold flushes; racing heart; tightening of the chest; snowballing worries; obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviour. These are just some of a number of symptoms that may be experienced. There are many health professionals and services available to help with anxiety information, treatment and support, and there are many things

that people with anxiety can do to help themselves. In addition to traditional health professional approaches, there are also a number of effective online therapies which can assist and treat anxiety disorders. Many of these are free, anonymous and easily accessible for anyone with internet access. Please visit beyondblue’s website for advice on next steps. This information is courtesy of beyondblue and Livelife Pharmacy and more comprehensive information on anxiety and treatment is available on the beyondblue website.

27 years Residential Building Experience Our Inspection Services Include: • Building & Termite and Timber Pest – Vendor and Buyer • Pool safety • Asbestos • New Construction and Renovation • Rental and Insurance Causation • Dilapidation

Over 30 years ago 2 fit young football players, Joe Bartola and Rod Silver, played for the Paramatta Eels, winning a grand final in 3rd grade in 1988, then playing 7 seasons together off and on in first grade until 1994. Both got on with their lives and hadn’t seen each other in 25 years, until one day Rod walked past Cooroy Harvest Fresh, on the corner of Maple and Emerald street, and heard ‘ Hey Rocket’. He says it took a moment to recognise Joe, due to a little hair loss but once he did the friendship

that was formed on the footy fields so many years ago was still there. Also still there is their fitness. Joe who is owner and Master Fruiterer of Cooroy Harvest Fresh, works 7 days a week lifting endless boxes of fresh produce into his store to fill the shelves and Rod, aka Rocket Rod, runs Silver Fitness Studio and does one on one and group training sessions in his Gym on in Lawnville Road. They now catch up regularly at the new Coffee shop at Cooroy Harvest Fresh

Lake Macdonald fish stockers and members of the Lake Macdonald Freshwater Fishing Association are urging fishermen to grab a permit and go fishing at the Lake before the dam wall upgrade begins in March 2020. Russell Manning, treasurer of the Fishing Association said that the dam upgrade will necessitate the lowering of the water level in the Lake and relocating fish stock (a

process that will cause a lot of fish to die). Gary Kenzler, a member of the Lake Macdonald Fishing Club says Lake Macdonald is stocked with bass, yellow belly and saratoga and because the dam is really clean, the fish haven’t got any muddy taste and are really good eating. “The best way to prepare fresh water fish so they taste like reef fish is to fillet them and soak them in salty water for a couple of hours before cooking,” says Gary. You need a fishing permit to fish Lake Macdonald, but at only $50 a year or $10 a week it’s not a big expense. You can apply for a permit online at https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/rsa/ sips-dams-and-weirs/ profile?dam=lake-macdonald
