IT was good old-fashioned Aussie Day fun in Cooroy with plenty of entertainment on offer by our local venues to ensure everyone could get involved in the Day’s celebrations. Cooroy Hotel had everyone hopping with their toad and crab racing with funds raised from the auctions going to the Ellie Smiles charity.

Cooroy Sports Hub was a real family affair with ball games, thong throwing, cricket, face painting, water fights and live music.

Looking back on the election, the message is simple and clear, If the politicians are hopeless, the penalties are severe.

The election has stirred up the Federal LNP a treat, With much speculation surrounding the top seat.

The political situation ahead promises to be a sorry mess, Important decisisions likely to be an uninformed guess.

Hopefully they’ll reach some sort of accord, So hang on tight, citizens, and put your trust in the Lord.

THE Combined Coastal Car Club had a large number of members turn up for their first club run for 2015. The run left the club house at Cooroy and travelled to Kenilworh for a short break then to Imbil for a swim before lunch at Kandanga. After lunch it was off to Pomona where we enjoyed live music and a game of pool to end an enjoyable day.

HELP clean up on March 1st. The skip will be in the usual place in the car park near Apex park, Cooroy from 7.30 am to around 11.00 for registration and collection of rubbish bags.

Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club THE next meeting of the Club will be on Monday 9 March commencing 9.30 am at the home of Brian and Helen Barrow, 21 Swift Drive, Cooroy.

“World’s best farmer” comes to Noosa

THE much awaited Joel Salatin Masterclass “You Can Farm: The entrepreneur’s guide to

start and succeed in a farming enterprise” will be held February 28 from 9am @ The J in Noosa

Junction. Joel has been described by Time magazine as the “world’s best farmer” with 9 books to his credit including the bestseller “Folks this Aint Normal” This workshop will be invaluable to anyone looking at getting into organic or regenerative farming through the secrets of Polyface Farm systems, and how to create a vibrant, diverse, profitable and successful farming enterprise. This day will be chocker block with practical information and the nuts and bolts of how to get started and establish on-farm enterprises that are both regenerative and profitable. In Noosa there has been an emerging interest in niche farming as alternative income streams for lifestyle and career farmers, especially in organic product using

methodologies that have a neutral or positive impact to our soil and waterways.

The original RegenAG Film night mid year had the second highest attendance in QLD behind the Brisbane region, and was a solid indicator of the interest in the methods of polyface farming. It is a perfect fit for Noosa’s environmental status, and from information provided there are farms across Australia showing how niche agriculture can be environmentally sound and financially sustainable.

Curious activities in the Botanic Gardens ”If you go out into the gardens tonight, you’re in for a big surprise…’ as those discovered who attended Sunday’s Summer Garden Walk guided by botanist and newly appointed Chair of Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends, Dr Seonaid Melville.

Bees so addictively collecting a tree’s pollen that they block up their own hives; a tree that produces only male offspring through self-fertilisation (what was that song? ‘it’s a man’s world…!”; and another one producing razor sharp points on its bark commonly known as the ‘silk-floss’.

The marvels of the inhabitants of the Noosa Botanic Gardens kept everyone engrossed as they walked the winding paths of the 8 magnificent acres of tropical and sub-tropical plants and trees. Maggie Sim from Tewantin said: “Going on this guided walk has reminded me how beautiful these gardens are and how fortunate we are to have them in Noosa. And I haven’t even noticed the heat today because there is so much shade throughout the gardens with the trees, rainforest sections and gazebos”. Many locals ‘in the know’ often organise with family and friends to picnic at the gazebos in the Gardens.

Dr Seonaid Melville when pointing out the ‘Rainbow Shower’ Cassia tree currently flowering recollected “last year when we posted photographs of this beautiful flowering Cassia we had enquiries from afar as to how they could obtain a seedling”.

This 2 hour guided walk organized by the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens is a definite must for locals and visitors alike. Make sure you mark your diary for their Autumn Walk – Sunday 24 May. You never know what amazing activities these trees, plants and wildlife will be getting up to then as they prepare for winter!

Poppies for Gallipoli Is your insurance policy up to date?

EERWAH VALE resident Eileen Walder is probably better known for her charity work through “Boots for Bali” and her entertaining classes at Noosa U3A but the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings has her excited about a new project – knitting poppies.

Eileen and husband David will set sail on 26 March on the Gallipoli 2015 cruise which leaves Fremantle and follows the exact route taken by the first Anzacs, including stops at Albany, Colombo, Luxor, Cairo, Kusadasi, Cannakale (Gallipoli), Istanbul, Santorini, Mikonos, Athens, Palermo, Naples and finishing in Rome.

Accompanied by Military historians, and celebrities such as Normie Rowe, Darryl Braithwaite, Kate Cerebano, Ross Wilson and John Williamson, the cruise will visit the battlefields and cemeteries a couple of days before the Dawn service and then the ship returns to view the ceremony from its deck on Anzac Day. The Walders booked their places five years ago but feared they would have to drop out when friends backed out. Fortunately due to a cancellation the organisers offered a two berth cabin for the original fare price.

“Paying it off over the years became manageable and now that it is almost here we are very excited,“ Eileen said. “We wanted to represent both our RSLs ( Cooroy and Tewantin) but realised taking wreaths was impossible, Then someone suggested knitting poppies to place on the graves and so I got busy. “ A couple of friends have also volunteered to knit or crotchet poppies using patterns Eileen provides, including an old school friend now living in Italy. However she would love to hear from anyone else who can help. They are very easy, only taking half an hour each. She would also love the names of any diggers from the Sunshine Coast area who died or served at Gallipoli as she would love to have a poppy for each one on this historical occasion. If new items have been purchased for the home or business such as furniture or electrical items, remember to increase the contents amount. Don’t forget all the fixed items that are classed as buildings,

especially if you have recently completed improvements or renovations. Special valuables may need to be listed individually and a valuation held as evidence.

Organisers gear up for Cooroy Fusion Festival 2015

THE tree lights have been turned off and the decorations taken down which means that the next focus for the Cooroy community is the annual Fusion Festival to be held on Saturday 9th May 2015.

From its humble beginnings in 2010, the festival has grown rapidly in just a few years to become one of the highlights on Cooroy’s calendar. It is a free one day event which last year attracted close to 10,000 locals and visitors.

Originating as a celebration of the opening of our very impressive Library, the event now highlights the activities and achievements of both the Library and Butter Factory whilst showcasing

the talent, expertise, creativity, innovation and products of the local area.

As with previous years, there promises to be a wide variety of entertainment that will appeal to all ages.

There will be a number of the old favorites along with some novel ideas, not previously seen before.

Details will be announced over the coming weeks so be sure to keep an eye on the Cooroy Rag for more news.

The Festival certainly wouldn’t be possible without the support of its valued partners, the Noosa Council and the Bendigo Bank. The Cooroy Fusion Festival also provides many opportunities for local businesses to get involved and the Fusion

ANZAC Troop Train to stop at Cooroy THE re-enactment of a World War One Troop Train is to take place just before Anzac Day 2015 and Cooroy will be the lunch time stop for the 230 passengers on the train.

The Anzac Troop Train will be a steam train with nine authentic refurbished carriages traveling from Winton to Brisbane. Departure will be from Winton Queensland at 10am Monday 20th April 2015 with overnight stops at Longreach, Emerald,

Rockhampton and Maryborough. Arrival at Central Station in Brisbane is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 24 th April 2015. Ian Whisker of the CooroyPomona RSL Sub Branchy said “We are proud for our sub branch to have arranged for the train to stop in at Cooroy for lunch. It will be in town from about 1100 to 1300 hours and the Cooroy RSL will be providing light lunch for all onboard”. It is expected

that the Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, will be on the train as well as a senior member of the Queensland Government.

The funding for the train has been provided by the Federal Government through World War One Commemorative Grants and The Queensland Government has also provided a substantial sum of money through the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program. The passengers traveling on this trip of a

lifetime will also be assisting financially by contributing to cover their meals and accommodation for the duration of the trip.

About 35 children from the schools in Cooroy and Pomona areas will enjoy a ride from Cooroy to Nambour on this historic train and will then return by bus on the day.

Ian said “ The RSL Sub Branch hoped to have many school children and residents of the Sunshine Coast at Cooroy Railway

Station to welcome in the train and see it off to Brisbane”.

A great start for 2015 at NCC

COMMUNITY - it is a word used frequently among the families and staff of Noosa Christian College (NCC) in Cooroy, and in 2015 it will be no different.

With the excitement and newness of beginning school for many students and their families, NCC hosted a combined ‘Meet & Greet’ evening on January 28th. Attendees were encouraged to mix with College staff, fellow parents and students whilst enjoying light refreshments on the lawns beside the Library Resource Centre.

SUNSHINE Coast Council says thank you to the 93% of responsible cat and dog owners who have renewed their pets’ registration for the current year.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said pet registration plays an important role in the safety and security of both pets and the community.

“Registration helps council to identify pets if they stray and reunite them quickly with their owners,” she said.

“It also helps council provide a variety of animal management activities and facilities across the region including the pound facilities, dog off leash parks, proactive patrols and education programs such as PetPEP. “It is compulsory for all cats and dogs to be registered, except working dogs and assistance dogs. The annual registration period is from October 1 to September 30 the following year.

“Dogs must be registered every year.

“Cat owners have the option to select from lifetime registration if their cat is desexed and microchipped, or yearly registration is available as an alternative.

“To encourage and reward responsible pet owners, significant reductions in registration fees apply for desexed and microchipped dogs and cats, and for pensioners. Registration is also free for pets under six months old.

“Please also remember to notify council of any changes to your or your pet’s details so we can ensure our records are up-to-date. This includes changes to pensioner details, desexing, microchipping, registration cancellations and address for your animal.

“Council will be following up overdue registrations over the coming weeks. This follows a reminder notice mailed in November last year.”

Owners who fail to register their pets may face a fine of $227. There are several convenient payment methods available including online, over the phone, via Australia Post or at your closest Customer Service Office.

Owners are also able to register their animal conveniently online via the MyCouncil function.

IT’S hard to imagine it right now, but soon the cooler months with be with us again and the game they play in heaven will be with us for another season.

Now, the dragons you’ll find in Eumundi might be a little smaller than you’d expect, but what they lack in size they make up for in spirit. The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union club is located at the Eumundi Showground and it’s a fantastic place to watch the enthusiastic, energetic juniors battle it out for game day supremacy each weekend. The club has called the showground home for 7 years and each season the club has grown its member base as more ‘wannabe Wallabies’ discover the friendly, fun and family atmosphere of the Dragons club. The club is keen to welcome juniors who would like to experience what it feels like to be a dragon!

A dedicated team of volunteer coaches are guided in the latest coaching techniques for the modern rugby game by the very experienced hand of Doug Toms, who is also president of the club. Doug is well known in the Junior Rugby Union circle here on the coast and his coaching experience reaches far afield as the UK.

Doug and the award-winning coaching team are focused on providing a training platform for the juniors that teaches correct technique, safe playing practices and encourages good spirited competitiveness whilst still maintaining the ‘fun and enjoyment’ factor. Despite being a relatively small club compared with others on the Sunshine Coast, the Eumundi Dragons are very proud of the achievements of their junior players.

The Dragons are delighted with the support they continue to receive from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. This week, manager Geoff Edwards visited the ground to unveil a new sign at the entrance of the club so all will know they are about to enter the Dragon’s Lair in 2015.

“We love sponsoring the Dragons,” Geoff said. “This club is going places and we’re delighted to be on board supporting junior rugby again this season,” he added.

There are plenty of examples growing in gardens. Because they are native to our area they can be grown without any special attention and flower every year. I try to encourage people to buy plants from the nurseries as the numbers in the wild have been heavily depleted.

I live in the Mary Valley and the older residents tell of thousands of King Orchids flowering in the spring. In our area there are none left? Their habitat has been cleared for farming and the few remaining remnants of shrub are getting smaller.

The Americans adore our native orchids we take them for granted and don’t value them.

The Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society has Phaius tankervillae as their floral emblem.

Commonly known as the swamp orchid is found locally and is a very easy orchid to cultivate.

If you are interested in growing orchids you may want to come along and meet like-minded people at the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society.

The club meets at Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each month starting at 1.30pm.

The Australian Cymbidiums are not as spectacular as the overseas ones but have a beauty of their own. They have pendulous flower spikes and the growing habit has adapted to our very changeable conditions over thousands of years.

These can be seen growing high up out of the side of trees.

An orchid once abundant in this area is Dendrobium speciosum (King Orchid). This orchid is one of the best orchids in the world.

Positive business outlook good news for Cooroy FROM Maleny to Cooroy, Noosa to Caloundra the vibe is overwhelmingly positive for local businesses on the Sunshine Coast, according to the results of latest Sunshine Coast Business Confidence Survey.

More than 220 businesses responded to survey in late 2014, offering insights and predictions on the state of the local business economy for the coming year.

According to Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, the results are some of the most positive since the survey began in 2009. “The business confidence index has rise to 116 points, which is an alltime high since surveying began here in 2009 and nearly 20 points higher than the rock bottom depths of April 2011 after the Qld floods,” Councillor Jamieson said.

Markets Research at Suncorp Bank, Daryl Conroy suggested the positive outlook for local Sunshine Coast businesses was also influenced by a number of larger factors.

“Sharp declines in the value of the Australian dollar over the last 6 months promises a double benefit. Firstly, a lower currency is expected to encourage a rise in international tourism, as their purchasing power strengthens,” Mr Conroy said. “Secondly, domestic tourism should see a return to growth as Australians opt for local holidays over international travel. Also Important for the Sunshine Coast is the fact that the New Zealand economy is performing strongly and a decade high New Zealand dollar (relative to the Australian dollar) should boost tourism numbers over the coming year.”

Eric and Francoise welcome Glen Tilly to their team at Maison de Provence

GLEN Tilly grew up in Noosa where his love for food and cooking began.

“At age14, when my Mum broke her hand playing basketball, my brother and me then needed to help prepare meals at home. When I was in high school, I took the food major hospitality class and started a school based traineeship at Jacksons restaurant on Thomas St in Noosaville, where worked on my weekends and school

Holidays. I fell even more in love with what was going on around me in the kitchen. The impact of how much I was learning and wanting to learn, the Way the Chefs talked, worked, and what they could do intrigued me.

Most of all i was interested in how they went about there job. It all seemed like some sort of magic, hard work as well, I loved every minute of it.”

Just before his 21st

birthday Glen became a qualified chef and left Noosa for a working holiday, beginning on the Whitsunday Island resorts and ending up in Perth, Glen worked in a wide variety of restaurants while travelling around Australia.

After six years away, and missing the Noosa lifestyle Glen returned home to put what he had learned to good use. “I began working at the

Noosa icon, Aromas restaurant, where I worked four years, three of which as Sous Chef.

After my stint at Aromas the amazing opportunity to become the Head Chef of the Flux team was presented to me. I knew that I would be ready for the Challenge. I had my own kitchen, full creative design of the Flux menu and I felt that I had finally found my own style. The food that I delivered was honest and i had a lot of confidence in this style.

Which was obviously felt by everyone else too as we got one chef hat This January 2015. But after 2 years at this establishment I needed to broaden my knowledge by refining my skills as a pastry chef. In my view desserts need to be as important as a meal as the last impression is often the one people will remember. So I now work at “Maison de Provence” in Cooroy as the head chef. I can still be creative and in full control of the menu while working alongside Eric to learn more about desserts.”

THE Sunshine Coast’s own esteemed Chamber Orchestra , The Pa cific Chamber players, will commence their 2015 series of concerts with a programme of timeless classics .These classics will be performed by JulieAnne O’Reilly and Jenny Vandenberg (violin), Andrew Paszkowski (viola), Anne Bowyer (cello) , Ronald Webb (Oboe and Oboe d’Amore). .and Janet Brewer (piano) .

The concerts will be presented at Cooran on Saturday 21st February, 2pm and Caloundra on Sunday 22 nd February 2pm. Bookending the programme are two piano quartets.

Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor K 478 and Mozart’s String Quartet No 6

in Bb K159. Together with Schubert’s Adagio and Rondo Concertante D 487, Loeillet’s sonata in C for Oboe and Piano and Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces for Oboe d’Amore and Piano, Op 73, this entertaining programme, will present a kaleidoscopic range of music, displaying the Pacific Chamber Players usual diversity, expertise and warmth.

How does acupuncture for fertility work?

TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine has a long history of treating women’s health problems, with texts from 200 BC describing medicinal plants to treat infertility. Today Traditional Chinese medicine specialists have adapted and incorporated these traditional applications into modern fertility treatment.

This has resulted in clinical feedback and research suggesting that acupuncture is capable of significantly enhancing fertility.

Traditional Chinese medicine aims through the use of acupuncture, herbs and lifestyle advice to achieve the following: Regulate the woman’s hormonal cycle • A regular 28 to 30 day cycle with good quality fertile mucus, pain free ovulation midcycle, no premenstrual symptoms and a pain free period with efficient bleeding indicates a balanced hormonal cycle.

Improve the quality of a woman’s fertile mucus • Fertile mucus appears several days prior to ovulation and is required to help nourish the sperm and guide it into the egg.

Regulate ovulation • An ovulation occurring on day 13 to 15 of a cycle indicates that the egg is being released at its optional developmental time.

Promote an efficient menstrual bleed • In traditional Chinese medicine the menstrual bleeding reflects the quality of the uterine lining. This lining appears important for implantation as women with poor endometrial development have an association with IVF failure or recurrent miscarriage. Chinese medicine aims to increase the thickness and quality of this lining, it does this through promoting corpus luteal function (which in turn produces progesterone) and through its documented action of increasing blood flow to the uterus • Ideally it is expected that a woman will experience menstrual bleeding for at least 3 to 5 days.

Enhance egg development: While the genetic material for a women’s eggs are created when the woman is herself an embryo, the process of the egg maturing comes under the influence of her hormones. Clinically it also appears possible to influence the integrity of the eggs released following acupuncture treatment, this may be due to increasing the blood supply to the developing follicles or by increasing the nutritional supply to the egg via the fluids that surround and nourish it.

Improve sperm quality: Normal sperm count values are currently given as: • Greater than 20 million sperm per ml • Greater than 50% of sperm moving vigorously (motility) • Greater than 14% with no deformities (morphology) A popular study looking at men’s fertility found that those men that succeeded in fathering a child had: • Greater than 48 million sperm per ml • A motility of more than 63% • A normal morphology of 12% (New England Journal of Medicine 345(19):1388-1393).

This study indicates the importance of men achieving the highest sperm count and motility possible. Enhance the internal environment

of the fallopian tubes • Traditional Chinese medicine aims to improve the elasticity and the secretions of the fallopian tubes, facilitating the passage of the fertilised egg into the uterus.

Promote embryo implantation • In a recent study acupuncture used during IVF at the time of egg retrieval and embryo resulted in a significantly higher viable pregnancy rate. (Fertility and Sterility 74(4):721-72). In this study 160 women undergoing IVF were monitored. The success rate in the acupuncture group was 42.5% compared to a 26.3% success rate in the group of women that did not receive acupuncture.

• In a study of 114 women at the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Centre in Colorado Springs (American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) October 2004) half of the women received acupuncture prior to and following embryo replacement. The women who received acupuncture had a 51% pregnancy rate compared to 36% in control group and an 8% miscarriage rate compared to 20% in control group. Acupuncture also was found to reduce the risk of tubal pregnancy and increase the live birth rate. The live birth rate for each IVF cycle was 23% higher than the cycles for the control group.

Promote a viable pregnancy: Traditional Chinese medicine can be used in the early stages of pregnancy to help promote maternal and foetal well being. There are treatments to aid with any problems during pregnancy (such as morning sickness, breech presentation, anaemia, babies that are small for their gestational age, blood pressure problems and muscular skeletal pain), as well as treatment protocols to prepare for childbirth and if necessary to promote induction.

Rancid fish oil!

IMPACT Boxing has had a busy start to the 2015 season. Sam, Ben and Taylah travelled to Melbourne to attend a Hyperformance camp run

by Boxing Australia Development coaches Mark Evans and Brad Patullo. This camp was aimed at Junior/Youth athletes from all over Australia that Boxing Australia believes have the potential to represent Australia this year. The camp saw the athletes attend 3 grueling training sessions per day for a 5 day period.

The content of the camp was well received and all athletes that attended put in a brilliant performance.

This year we have Sam & Ben Cameron-Hands and Taylah Robertson all preparing to be selected to represent their country on the world stage, so the Hyperformance camp has been a brilliant start to our preparation.

Taylah will travel again to Melbourne on the 28th of February to compete in the Womens World junior select trials. This event will attract junior/ youth female boxers from all over Australia that have been selected by their state to compete at this event. Boxing Australia will then choose a team from the winners of each weight catergory to represent Australia at the World Championships to be held in May in Taiwan. Sam & Ben Cameron-Hands will also compete in their selection events in March and providing they win at the March trials they then have their final selection trials in April on the Gold Coast. A win at the April event will see both boys go on to represent Australia at the World championships to be held in Russia in September.
