Council says no to retirement village BY ALEX PURCELL NOOSA Council have refused the application for a retirement resort on land next to the Cooroy Golf Club. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said all councillors were unanimous in their decision to refuse the development application at a general meeting on March 18.
“Our decision protects the character of the hinterland and is in keeping with the Noosa Plan 2020,” Mayor Stewart said. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the proposed development lies outside the urban boundary for the Noosa Planning Scheme, on land set aside for rural and open space recreation purposes.
“We place a very high value on open space, recreational lands and rural lands.” Councillors say the development would have resulted in a high density residential development outside the Urban Growth Boundary. Cooroy Golf Club secretary Andrew Dick told the Cooroy Rag that members
are disappointed with the decision. “The benefits to the Club would have been significant, not only for the members but also the non-member social players who make up over half the rounds played at the course. “The Club will continue to provide sporting activities for the members and the community but the missed
opportunity to improve the facilities and engage the wider community with a new clubhouse venue has been lost.” As part of the development proposal, GemLife had committed to deliver the Cooroy Golf Club a new golf house, pro shop, golf buggy storage for 40 carts, a new sealed 100 space car park, new entry
road and course improvements as well as 246 new golf memberships. The decision comes after Noosa Council agreed to a request by the developers to postpone its decision until March 18 to allow them time to make a case to councillors following Council Planning Staff’s recommendations to refuse the application.
