Congrats class of 2021! NOOSA District State High School Year 12 students celebrated their final year with a glitzy formal at Sunshine Beach

Surf Club, last month. Plenty of fun was had! See the official photos supplied to the Cooroy Rag on page 22.

Events bring Cooroy to life BY ALEX PURCELL AFTER a tumultuous year, Cooroy has come alive again. This month, three major events have brought people to our town and our community together. On October 9, thousands of people attended the German Bakehouse Cafe and Saw & Mill’s first annual Oktoberfest (see photos page 16 and 17). Saw & Mill Manager, Kimberly Bateman, told the Cooroy Rag that it was bigger than they expected. “We had over 2000 people come through on the day and because it was a community-focused event, there were lots of families.

“We had coffee and cars on the lot next door, and an old fire truck came along that was cool for everyone to see. The giant hotdog and pretzel eating competitions were hilarious to watch, and kids went home with lots of prizes from the pretzel toss. “It was a big day. Everyone enjoyed themselves.” On the Bowling Green, event-goers sampled traditional German food from the German Bakehouse together with beer, while being entertained by the LifeLine fashion parade, best-dressed competition and later, live music. Inside, the Saw & Mill restaurant was pumping out their famous pork knuckles. “We didn’t expect it to get

so busy so quickly and we sold over 300 pork knuckles on the day. We know the German Bakehouse had a really successful day as well, and we are looking forward to next year.” Already the two businesses have picked the date for next year’s Oktoberfest. “It’s October 1, 2022, and it will be bigger and better again.” On October 12, 65 local businesses and community members joined Noosa Council Mayor, Clare Stewart, for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s Dinner with the Mayor (see photos page 18). Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Chris Bell, told the Cooroy Rag that the

annual event is always well attended. “There is always a good vibe at this dinner. When Clare was walking around, she wasn’t greeting constituents, she was greeting friends. The Hinterland is kicking goals at the moment and Cooroy is the heart of the Hinterland.” And on October 3, over 100 frocked up and fabulous guests came together for the annual Noosa Polo Cup on the fields of the Noosa Country Polo Club, beneath Cooroy Mountain (see photos page 15 and story page 30). These recent events are on the back of other successful ones in August and September such as the

Cooroy Rag’s Community Celebration, the Mingle with the Mayor Ball, the Noosa Country Show and the Majestic Theatre’s 100-year birthday celebrations. After a number of other events were cancelled last minute due to Covid, such as Cooroy Fusion Festival and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water Festival, it is heartwarming to see events going ahead and people supporting them. And we’re not finished yet. Following the Pink October fundraiser breakfast at Saw & Mill on October 29, the major celebration for the Cooroy community is yet to come. Christmas in Cooroy is happening on December 10 and this year, the free

and family-friendly community event, put on by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, will feature late-night trading, the lighting of the tree, food and entertainment and the oldie but a goodie, Santa Race (see page 19). Meanwhile, many Cooroy businesses are exclaiming it has been “busier than ever” since the September school holidays. Statistics from the managers of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s RV Stop Over, show vans staying at the park have increased 57 per cent this year. And let’s do our bit and support all our wonderful businesses with our regular trade and Christmas shopping.

From your editor’s desk Cooroy Rag editor, Alex Purcell

EVERY edition we think ‘This edition is our best edition yet’. But if the response to our last edition is anything to go by, it really was ‘our best edition yet’. We have been inundated with calls and messages of support following our front-page story, earlier this month, from people all over Australia requesting a print edition, to locals, family and friends, all thanking us for re-telling the tragedy at Cooroy Creek in 1981 and remembering Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky. It has been humbling and heartwarming. Many said they hadn’t forgotten. Many said they would never forget. How could they? That is our point exactly. I was born in Cooroy in 1983, and sadly, I first learned of the tragic deaths of Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky only recently. That’s not right. They deserve more - as do the unknown victims of this tragedy, who were emotionally affected and whose stories may never be known. This tragic event is a part of Cooroy. Just like Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky. And their legacies need to be remembered. That is why we are advocating for a memorial to be erected at the site. So everyone will know their stories. And their memories can live on for generations to come. Your editor,

Alex

Bouquets & Brickbats BOUQUET to Andrew at Andrew’s A Grade Mechanical in Pomona for dropping everything to immediately attend to the slow puncture in my tyre. What a soldier. BOUQUET to Noosa Country Polo for putting on an event that brought

BRICKBATS to the teenagers seen using the picnic table in the park opposite Pomona IGA car park and leaving it in a terrible state. Pick up your rubbish. What a mess.

Memorial for tragedy embraced by community THE call for a memorial at the site of a tragedy that claimed four local lives is being welcomed by the Cooroy community. Derek Lange, 11, his mother June, 30, Shayne Parker, 9, and Ricky von Blanckensee, 18, were all killed in a tragic accident at Cooroy Creek on Saturday 5 December 1981. Now, 40 years later, the Cooroy Rag is advocating for a memorial to be erected at the site to remember them. This is an initiative that the Cooroy community has embraced. Iris Tomlinson said that she remembers the tragedy. “A memorial could be put alongside the memorial to the Fenwick Family in the park.” Sharen Widderick-Bell said it

Cooroy jailhouse future a topic of discussion AHEAD of the planned construction of a new police station in Cooroy, the future of the old jailhouse is being discussed. At the Cooroy Community Bank Grants Night last month, the Cooroy Memorial Hall Committee pitched a proposal to move the historical building into town and renovate it to function as

a heritage centre. But the Cooroy Rag has been advised by Cooroy Police that it is still a work in process. “There’s a chance that the jail will remain where it is, as it is a historical building and special permission is required from Noosa Council to move it. It may be moved or may stay where it is as

there is plenty of land to work with for a new station.” Construction of the new $4 million police facility on the Maple Street site is expected to begin in the near future and is part of the $300 million Queensland Police Service’s capital works program which will deliver major new police facilities across Queensland.

Parking inspectors patrol Cooroy PARKING inspectors have been recently observed marking cars and issuing tickets in Cooroy. Noosa Council Local Laws Manager, Steve Thomson told the Cooroy Rag that officers have been in town responding to complaints. “Parking officers were responding to complaints

about vehicles overstaying time limits plus long vehicles parked across multiple bays. “When motorists monopolise parking spaces it adversely impacts local traders who rely on the steady turnover of parking spaces to accommodate their customers. “By helping to keep things

moving, parking officers are supporting the local economy. “It’s also important that motorists park nose-in where applicable as this helps to avoid exhaust fumes being directed at shop entrances as vehicles reverse in.”

‘Tis the season to get… married

HERE IT IS: 10 DAYS FOR $30*

Melbourne Cup Style

From fashions on the field to the Champagne Lunches. We have you covered with the latest colours, trends and accessories for the Spring Carnival season.

WEDDING season is well and truly upon us with two more local couples tying the knot. Countryside Realty Noosa sales consultants, Kimberlea Thwaites and Eliot Krause, said ‘I do’ on September 29. Kimberlea told the Cooroy Rag that they had the “best day” celebrating with their dearest family and friends. “Eliot and I have been engaged for a few years and have the most adorable daughter in the world who is about to turn two. “We finally decided to tie

the knot on our property that we own in Carters Ridge and we had the best day.” From the engagement ring to the wedding flowers, the happy couple always used local businesses. “Eliot designed my engagement ring and had it made by Paul at ‘Bold as Love Jewellery’ in Cooroy and we then had him make our beautiful wedding bands. “Our flowers were done by none other than the beautiful Vanessa at ‘Rambling Rose’ in Cooroy. “And our photographs were done by the absolutely exceptional Ben Sowry, who is actually a Cooroy local together with his beautiful wife. He is divine and anyone who has the chance to meet him, would be a better person for it.” Kimberlea said that they feel so proud to be a part of such a beautiful community “with beautiful businesses and business owners

who helped us create and celebrate the best day ever”. “Our whole Countryside family were there to celebrate with us on the day.” Another local couple celebrating their nuptials surrounded by family and friends were Josh Roberts and Karen Elliott. They were married on October 2, with their children, Wyatt and Wren, by their side. One wedding guest said that the happy couple couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day – a gorgeous balmy spring afternoon. For the occasion, their property, Kingfisher Fields, was tastefully decorated to create a beautiful rustic theme. “Bagpipes welcomed guests on arrival with the sound ambling amid the gum trees and spacious bush setting.” Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Roberts.

Remembering former Cooroy Rag owner, Margaret Chinn OVER its 60 years of publishing, the Cooroy Rag has had other names and many owners. But one of the most memorable is Margaret Chinn. A formidable character, Margaret was well-known for going above and beyond for the community she loved, right up until the day she sadly passed away after battling cancer. The Cooroy Rag spoke to Margaret’s daughter Marianne White, about Margaret and her time as owner of The Review / Cooroy Rag from 1984-1996. “Mum was great at shorthand and she used this skill to find work as she was a single mum with four young children in Sydney. "Later, she married again to Michael Chinn, a Master Mariner from Yorkshire, and after they moved to Cooroy, Mum did a stint at The Review - and bought it not long after.” During her ownership, Margaret renamed The Review as the Cooroy Rag during the early 90s. “Mum was a force of nature. "She would work so hard and never rest enough. "There were not enough hours in the day. "She wanted to be involved in the community she loved so much. “She would prepare the paper with all her gathered stories, cut and paste and then drive to Gympie to the printers - then gather all the paper bundles and drive literally, all around the area, delivering them out. “I worked with Mum on the Review / Rag when I lived with her for nine months with my 18-month-old after returning from Devon in the UK. It wore me out.” Marianne said after returning from the UK, bizarrely she didn’t exist in the Australian Government’s

system. “Mum helped me prove who I was as my Australian passport had just run out and I wanted my husband to follow me out from England. “Apparently, I didn’t exist, which was so bizarre. "After nine months of drama, Mum wrote to Bob Hawke (former Prime Minister of Australia), who sorted it straight away. She was funny and fearless really.” As well as the Rag, Margaret grew strawberries in Eumundi and was involved in several volunteer organisations. “I remember she organised an SES training session once, and it was a mock fire rescue from a train carriage with pretend dead and wounded. "My son and I were rescued from the roof of the carriage and one man (missing his hand in real life) was dressed with makeup as though he had lost it. My son found it so exciting. “She loved the Volunteer Coast Guard. Her Coast Guard pals called her “teabag” because they rescued

her once from a line from a helicopter. That was crazy but lucky. “Mum was always a super strong swimmer. She and her twin sister, Barbara, who still lives in Sydney, were both born with issues. Mum had diphtheria and Barbara had polio, so Grandma used to take them swimming as therapy. They both recovered to become very strong, healthy women. “Mum also joined in Clean Up Australia only two weeks before she passed away.” Margaret battled cancer on and off during her time as owner of the Rag, even having chemo from the local doctor at home and then going in to work on the paper. She sadly passed away in 2000, the same year Judy Painter and Deb Boyle restarted the Cooroy Rag as the community-owned newspaper that it is today. Margaret donated all of her Cooroy Rag photographs from 1984-1996 to the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group Inc. in Emerald Street where they can be viewed.

What's hot this Melbourne Cup WHETHER you’re attending an event or meeting friends for lunch, Melbourne Cup is an excuse to get frocked up and feel fabulous. And to help you do just that, the Cooroy Rag spoke to several local businesses to get their expert advice on this year's fashions. From dresses to shoes to fascinators to accessories, here’s what’s hot this year and where you can score a winning look for race day.

Closet Confidential Closet Confidential owner, Karen, said fashion is all about what makes you feel fabulous. “It doesn’t matter what size, colour or shape it is, dresses have magical powers. Just putting on a pretty dress can make you feel amazing.” For event dresses and styling services, visit Closet Confidential at Shop 2/1 Maple Lane Cnr Emerald Lane, Cooroy.

Cooroy Shoes Cooroy Shoes owner, Maree, said low heels, fascinators and bling jewellery are the fashion for this Melbourne Cup. “Block heels and wedges in metallics and black and white, any fashion shoe that isn’t too high. “And fascinators, not hats with bling fashion jewellery.” For shoes and accessories, visit Cooroy Shoes at 24A Maple St, Cooroy. Blue Brown Bag Blue Brown Bag owner, Clara, said it's all about making a statement while being super comfortable. “Melbourne Cup racing season… immediately we think, what do I wear? Make a statement while being super comfortable in today’s on-trend styles. “Look to linens and silk, which are always elegant, stylish and comfortable. “Link rainbow bright and soft pastels, and pair a gorgeous, patterned silk top with plain linen or silk pants. “Linen dresses, short or maxi, plain or prints - the choice is amazing and available to suit all shapes. “Accessorise with big, bold statement pieces or just fabulous earrings. Be comfortable and enjoy.” For fashion and accessories, visit Blue Brown Bag at 28 Maple St, Cooroy.

Bold As Love

Urban Coyote

Bold as Love owner, Susan, said the jewellery inspiration for Melbourne Cup and summer 2021 is following in the footsteps of the European fashion trends. “We are seeing a lot of floral and natureinspired jewellery making a feature this season, which is perfect for events such as the Melbourne Cup. “From intricate leaf-inspired earrings and necklaces, to bold floral rings and pendants, it is all about making a statement and adding the final touches to your outfit. “Bohemian style with a little vintage inspiration is adding feminine touches to the current trends, where mixing your golds and silver is making a comeback. “If you are aiming for that perfectly polished look, then a little sparkle never goes astray with current trends leaning towards longer drop-style diamond/cz set earrings or classic pearl studs and single pearl necklets. “Allow your jewellery to make the finishing touch to your Melbourne Cup outfit.” For all this season’s jewellery, visit Bold as Love at 24 Maple St, Cooroy.

Urban Coyote owner, Leela, said from bright block colours to bold prints, colour is definitely on the to do list this Melbourne Cup. “Gingham and floral are also huge at the moment and we predict we will be seeing them a lot on the field. “But if wearing loud colour isn't your thing, why not add a bag or shoes for a pop of colour. “As we all know an outfit isn't complete without the right jewellery and we think gold and pearl statements are the perfect addition to dress up any look.” For dresses, accessories and jewellery visit Urban Coyote at Shop 4, 2 Emerald Street Cooroy.

Galah Home Galah Home owner, Bekki, said springtime offers an opportunity to shed the layers and textures of winter fashion and embrace the playful changes that the season brings. “We’ll be seeing a resurgence of bright and bold prints, tight tailoring, new nudes and accessories galore. “In the brights, it will be blue and greens; in the soft colours, soft pink hues, sorbet pastel tones such as lilac and mint green; and in neutrals, all-white and wheat. “Trends are colour blocking, graphic prints and black and white as well as 70s trends such as crochet, broderie anglaise and floral prints. Shapes are tight tailoring. “On-trend accessories are sunglasses, pearls, block heels that are chic and comfortable, bright green or yellow bags, crown-like fascinators, natural fedoras and head scarves.” For fabulous clothes and accessories, visit Galah Home at Shop 2/1 Emerald St, Cooroy.

WHAT started as a hobby has boiled into a business. Pomona Mum, Carly Mullins, first started making homemade jams and chutneys four years ago.  Carly told the Cooroy Rag that she was making preserves for friends and family when she learned she could enter them in the Ekka. “My husband is a FIFO worker, so I’m a stay-athome mum with our two boys. “I got into jam making while staying at home and got wind that anyone can enter the Ekka and local show competitions, so I thought I’d give it a go and I was really successful.” Over the past four years, Carly’s preserves have taken out numerous first prizes in different

categories. “This year I became Grand Champion with my lime butter in the Preserves Category at the Ekka. “I also won at the Noosa Show with my lime and lemon butter, orange marmalade and chutneys. For the first time this year I also entered the cooking class and won as Champion Cookery Exhibitor and Champion Baking Exhibitor as well as Champion Preserve Exhibitor.  “I received First Prize for my citrus marmalade, orange marmalade, fig jam, cumquat marmalade, apricot jam, melting moments, jam drops and pumpkin scones.” Carly’s award-winning jams and chutney are her own recipes, using locally sourced ingredients. “All the recipes I’ve

created over the years were through trial and error. I’d give them to people to sample and get good feedback so I kept going with them. “This year at the Ekka I entered combinations like mango, cranberry, pear and apple and rhubarb chutneys.” Carly is currently in the process of installing a commercial kitchen that will allow her to sell her preserves for the first time. “We have just under two acres here in Pomona where we have all the citrus growing, and what I don’t grow, I buy locally for my preserves. “I’ve just registered the company name, Laduka Preserves, which is a mix of my boys’ names”.

Carlene styling a property

A LOCAL real estate agent is celebrating a feather in her cap and says it is all thanks to first impressions. Countryside Realty Noosa Sales Consultant and Property Stylist, Carlene George, has been nominated as an REIQ Awards of Excellence 2021 Finalist for Rising Star Salesperson of the Year. Carlene told the Cooroy Rag it is an honour to be nominated as a finalist. “Branching out as a sales agent, I wanted to do my best in this field but I also saw an opportunity where I could take this role one step further. “It is imperative to give excellent service and that is something I know I do well, but it was very quick for me to see there was a point of difference that I could make, to give even better service to my clients.” Carlene provides exclusive in-house styling. “The main point of being a real estate agent is to sell a property for the best possible price so that first impression is crucial.

“I know what buyers are looking for, I know the shots the photographer will take and having a design background to know how to present a property to its full potential, is an ability I have and I didn’t realise until working as an agent that this is something some people do struggle with. “I understand that many people do not know how to present their homes to sell and there is an absolute difference between how it looks when you sell and when you live in it.” Carlene said it is often hard for homeowners to see beyond how their home has always been. “That is where it is good to have fresh eyes come in and give ideas. As a people person, I am very sensitive with my clients. This is their biggest asset, which they love, so I am very aware of making sure the outcome is something they are comfortable with.” With a whole styling studio full of soft furnishings and small furniture pieces, Carlene transforms a

property, to “work with what the property is wanting to be”. “When I go to a property, I am not making it look like the latest trends from the magazines. I maintain its homey feel yet make sure it appeals to numerous types of buyers and of course all the other things which are important, such as making it feel fresh, clean, bright, and spacious.” Carlene said that she understands selling is a stressful time for vendors and loves how her styling can provide them with an extra level of service. “It is important to me that vendors are not faced with a hefty bill for some staging or styling services and I am extremely pleased I can style and present a home as a free service for my clients. “I have seen how this extra service I give to my clients has such a great outcome.” To see a video of what Carlene does as an agent visit: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=C_hqqK0HJs0

Meet the Kindness Club INTRODUCING another kind-hearted club member! Along with our articles and projects, we will share member profiles. The children will share their feelings about kindness and a little about themselves. Kenzi, Grade 3 What does kindness mean to you? Kindness makes me feel happy because it makes other people feel happy too. The last kind deed you did for someone? I helped my sister after she fell off her bike. I gave her hugs. A kindness shown to you? Our neighbour gave me a lollipop. What makes you happy? Watching a sunrise at the beach, riding my bike, and watching my little brother, Lochy chase birds in the backyard! The Kindness Club would love to hear from you! If you have a kindness story to share please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@ outlook.com or post it to The Kindness Club, c/- P.O Box 816, Cooroy. “Little hearts make a big difference”

Open Day at Pomona Kindy

POMONA and District Community Kindergarten was excited to participate in this year’s Noosa Country Show. The theme ‘where town meets country’ was explored with the children and we engaged in a variety of art practices and discussions. We had fun making Australian animals from clay and natural resources. Some of the animals that we observed in our local environment included echidnas, koalas, and blue-banded native bees. The children enjoyed making townhouses using recycled collage materials, as well as some collage artworks. Community links are an important part of our kindergarten program, and we have a strong focus on caring for and respecting our environment. We are inviting prospective families to visit our kindergarten on Friday 22 October, between 9:30am and 11:00am. We are currently taking enrolments for 2022. If you would like any information about our wonderful community kindergarten, please contact Co-Directors Peta Collis and Renae Hudson on 5485 1381.

BIG news includes a resolution by Noosa Council to apply to join the Southeast Queensland (SEQ) Council of Mayors. The Council of Mayors has done a tremendous job on a number of matters in recent years, including playing a pivotal role in securing the Olympic Games. These games have the potential to accelerate investment in transport, infrastructure, tourism and so much more across the Southeast and it’s time Noosa supported the work of the Council of Mayors. Previous Noosa Councils decided not to be part of the SEQ Council of Mayors and that was their choice, but we consider collaboration and robust dialogue with other councils as vital. We need to work as one SEQ region to deliver better outcomes for the business sector and the wider community.

Playground progress

It’s full steam ahead at the Hinterland Adventure Playground site, Cooroy. Construction of the arbour is now underway. Footings for the major features have been installed and the water play area is complete. Work to install the Bio Basin continues and we are looking good for our end of year completion date. While it is ‘all go’ with the playground, work on new car parking spaces to support the playground is continuing, with the crossing now finished. Thank you for your patience while crews continue working on: • 12 new car park spaces on Maple St, adjacent to Apex Park. • 22 new car park spaces at the Lower Mill site. • 22 ‘overflow’ car park spaces along Maple St, next to the Cooroy Tennis Club. • 2 new disabled car park spaces in Marara St, next to the playground.

Road re-seals

Speaking of continued infrastructure, you may have noticed road resealing underway in the Hinterland. The full of list of roads either already resealed, or about to be, includes: • Ambulance St, Pomona. • Belwood Pl, Pomona. • Pioneer Rd, Pomona. • Pottery St, Pomona. • School St, Pomona. • Smedley Dve, Pomona. • Camphor Rd, Pinbarren. • Weemilah Crt, Cooran. • Pender Creek Rd, Kin Kin. This resealing program is part of the $4.36 million funding Council received under the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program and is grassroots spending at its best.

Free holiday buses

Good news abounds with the ‘Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses,’ which will be back for Christmas 2021 and Easter 2022. Subject to TransLink approvals, travel will be free on TransLink buses servicing Cooroy, Cooran and Pomona, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach, Peregian Beach, Noosa Parklands, Tewantin and Noosa Civic.

Council has filed proceedings in the Planning and Environment Court in the case against Kin Kin Quarry operator, Cordwell Resources. An initial hearing whereby Council will seek interim enforcement orders for all quarry truck movements to cease during school bus hours, will also be sought. Further proceedings will focus on alleged breaches by the Quarry operator, with Council seeking to address the intensification of use issues, which is at the centre of community concern. Final enforcement orders will be sought requiring the operators to limit the number of quarry trucks per day, avoid convoying and ensure that movements are within the operating hours, with all truckloads covered. A thank-you to community members for their commitment over several months to gather evidence. More than 20 residents have provided statements that will form a critical part of the legal case and for which we are very grateful. A copy of the court document is available on the e-courts website https:// bit.ly/3kqPIcH

Tiny homes win

To end on a high, Council has given a green light for two new ‘tiny homes’ on Council land at Tewantin to help support young people transitioning from crisis accommodation to independent living. Council is pleased to assist the Youturn project with land for the tiny homes at Earl Street, between Youturn’s premises and Tait Duke Cottage. If successful, the three-year pilot program could become a model for other councils that are facing similar housing issues. It’s a tangible solution to homelessness and an incredibly important initiative of which all councillors are fully supportive.

Hinterland towns back those in need THROUGH good times and bad, Noosa’s hinterland communities have always held strong and united to help those who need it. This strength is demonstrated by the sheer number of volunteer organisations that provide support for local people and families. As well as being civic-minded, the Hinterland is also known as a haven of creativity, and both of these characteristics are on display at Cooroy’s Uniforms 4 Kids – a world-first program whose volunteers turn donated police, emergency services and Australia Zoo uniforms into bright and cheerful clothes for disadvantaged kids. This remarkable organisation, founded by Yvonne Pattinson OAM in Cooroy, not only helps families in need but also reduces waste by preventing the

uniforms from ending up as landfill. The organisation now has branches throughout Australia that turn out 24,000 items of clothing a year. Cooroy’s 20 volunteers create about 3,000 dresses, shirts and shorts, and I am delighted to support their work with $5,000 through Round 6 of the Stronger Communities Programme to purchase four sewing machines and an overlocker. Pomona and District Community House is another example of the region’s strong ties, and I was pleased to provide a $13,650 Stronger Communities Programme Grant to give this venue a fresh coat of paint. The Community House plays an important role in Pomona, helping people of all ages stay connected and socialise through events like the popular Cuppa and

Convo morning teas, activity groups and expos. The Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Programme Round 6 provided up to $150,000 for each of the federal electorates in Australia – more than $22.6 million in total – to help improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant and viable communities like those in Noosa. We can all look forward to the benefits that this funding brings to Cooroy and Pomona by ensuring that these groups and their many volunteers can continue to help others.

Queensland has been impacted by close to 90 disasters in the past decade and the Sunshine Coast is not immune. Households that are well prepared before a natural disaster are more resilient and are able to recover faster. The best way to minimise the disruption to you and your family’s lives is to first understand your risk exposure to natural disasters, look at the big picture, identify the scenarios that you need to consider, and make a plan. Head to https://www. getready.qld.gov.au/ for resources to help get your household prepared.

Largest Police Intake in a Decade The single largest intake of police recruits in a decade will enter the Oxley Police Academy this week, as the Palaszczuk Government continues the biggest investment in policing for Queensland in thirty years. 142 recruits will enter the Oxley Police Academy this week, with a further intake of 72 recruits planned for November.

This is in addition to the 44 recruits currently undergoing training in Townsville, with a new intake of 48 recruits commencing at the Townsville Police Academy in November. These huge intakes progress the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to deliver 2,025 police personnel by 2025 together with a $300 million 5-year capital works program that is delivering new and upgraded police facilities across the state

your say Sandy Bolton Noosa State Member for Noosa

Time to stand up against social trolls WHILE social media can have the enormous benefits of connecting, sharing, and informing, events during recent years have seen an increase in the ‘dark side’. This is so much so that its tentacles are entering every realm, affecting all that we love. Parliament’s Legal Affairs and Safety Committee, of which I am a member, saw a commonality in submissions from witnesses during the vilification and hate crimes inquiry. Social media has become a platform for those who want to hurt, victimise, and brutalise fellow Australians in an unprecedented way, with images and posts that have been truly shocking. An initiative put forward recently by a Year 6 student to entice children off social media highlighted the enormity of this issue. The harm it was doing to, and between friends, and the volume of misinformation and bullying being broadcast, highlight how we are failing our children. We are already seeing impacts on our young, mentally, and otherwise. These include physical ailments from being hunched over phones and screens, to fear, anxiety and a level of unhealthy competitiveness in achieving those ‘likes’, through to devastatingly suicidal thoughts and tendencies. We adults are supposed to be their protectors, and yet here is a youngster trying to fix our failings, regardless of our efforts including programs, initiatives and apps designed to get us offline and living our best lives.

One only needs to take a stroll through online community noticeboards, to see comments that range from brutal to bizarre, which would never be verbalized or accepted in person. The era of the ‘keyboard warrior’ has brought out the very worst in communicating, and is leading those who are already suffering to sink further into depression and fear, and respectful contributors to abandon these pages. This leaves only what has been termed by many as a ‘cesspit’. As someone who has seen the enormous benefit of the connecting and sharing, I find it incredibly sad that ‘freedom of speech’ can become ‘freedom to humiliate or bully’. What is the answer? The High Courts have now determined that those hosting websites or social media pages, are responsible for comments by others (third parties) and may be liable for any defamation that arises as a result. More information is available on my website at www. sandybolton.com/noosa360 This leaves us with the choice to either monitor our posts 24/7 and delete harmful comments from others, or to turn comments off as so many have been doing in response to the misinformation and vitriol being promoted, including about COVID and vaccinations. Over the years I have requested and encouraged respectful conversations in all realms, often privately contacting those who have not realised that their comments may have been inappropriate.

Now with these legal ramifications, findings in inquiries, and requests from residents of all ages impacted by this negativity, it is time for real change. Yes, it is regrettable that it has come to where we must hide or delete comments as part of this process. However we all have a responsibility to ensure that nothing on our pages could be seen as perpetrating hurt or fear for another. Turning comments off altogether is not my preference. However, should we find that monitoring and deleting is insufficient, we may find it necessary to do so in some cases. I offer gratitude to the many page moderators in our community, who are already doing this as an effort to retain freedom of speech by promoting freedom from humiliation. We all play a vital role, and we need to use these mediums for positive outcomes, including connecting with each other, and sharing credible information and those beautiful happy snaps and messages that have been a life line during these long hard COVID months of separation. Persecution, humiliation, and degradation are not what we as Australians, Queenslanders, or especially Noosans aspire to. Until next month, ‘unfollow’ those pages or people who are perpetrating harm, rethink your own comments, and get out and about in our glorious spring sunshine and homes, thereby living our best lives. Colliers win at Noosa Polo Cup THE Noosa Polo Cup 2021 on October 3 was about more than just the sport. The event brought together local businesses, members of the community and worldclass polo players for an exciting and elegant day at the foot of Cooroy Mountain. Noosa Country Polo Club President, Niall Coburn, told the Cooroy Rag that it was a magnificent community day. “The day displayed the sport of polo with amazing horses, stomping of the divots, men and women’s dash and fashions on the field. “We had the privilege of having Glen Gilmore, one of the best Australian national polo players and former manager of Guards Polo Club, compete in the event with Jack Mantova. This made it an exciting match for everyone.” After three high-quality polo games, it all came down to a very close match between the Countryside Realty Noosa and Colliers teams in the final. “Before the final game,

there was a blessing of the field by my wife, Illy Coburn, and then bagpipes by Pete the piper, who played the beautiful tunes of ‘Scotland the Brave’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. “During the game, we had the stomping of the field, the men’s and women’s races and the final fashions on the field before the final exciting chukka, where the Colliers team won by two goals.” Niall said that polo is a game of grit, where the players work as a team to outmatch their opponents, “ride off” and score goals. “It is a game that can be played by people of all age groups and sexes but requires determination and confidence in the player. “Everyone is always learning something new, especially about their horse, polo strategies and themselves. “It has been called a game of kings, but now is a game of the people as everyone can watch, play and enjoy the game with no end to enthusiasm.”

In the final hour of the day, there was an auction of a painting “Portrait of a Polo Player” donated by a local artist, Christopher Wren. It was purchased by the successful final bidder, Kate Cox from Reed & Co, with the proceeds going to Katie Rose Hospice. The event was supported by many local businesses including Cooroy’s Countryside Realty Noosa, Galah Homewares and Run-

ning Cool Horse Feed from Sauers Cooroy. Food was provided by Mia and Paul from Spoonfed Caterers, drinks by Boiling Pot Brewery and Bollinger and volunteers from the Lions Club and Katie Rose Cottage Hospice helped to direct cars. “The Noosa Country Polo also wishes to

Hinternoosa finalists for real estate excellence awards

FOR the second consecutive year, Hinternoosa has been named amongst the finalists in The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Awards For Excellence in the Medium Residential Agency of the Year category. Principal, Kess Prior said that the entire team is very excited to be named amongst the finalists. “This is testament to how committed we all are to providing exceptional service and achieving the best results for our clients across sales and property management. It really does take a team to do what we do, so every

single staff member across admin, sales, property management and our leadership team deserves to be recognised as contributing towards this.” REIQ Awards For Excellence are recognition at the highest level in Queensland. To be named as a finalist is a significant achievement and the REIQ have reported that this year’s awards are the most competitive to date. Operating since 1989, Hinternoosa are high end and large acreage specialists, with a proven record for setting new benchmarks in the region. They demonstrated agility in

adapting their agency and processes quickly to cater for Covid impacts, a foresight that ensured clients’ success, maintained a high level of customer service when enquiry volume for this region sky-rocketed, and kept the team mentally strong and connected. A big congratulations to the team at Hinternoosa for being named finalists. Winners will be announced at an awards gala on 23 October. For enquiries or to book an appraisal, contact Hinternoosa via /www.hinternoosa.com.au/ or phone 07 5447 7000.

Monthly Market Wrap Up with Sirah Robb Director and Principal of Wythes Real Estate AS we begin the final quarter of the year, demand for Sunshine Coast property continues to grow and, as a result, prices continue to rise. Whilst sellers are enjoying this market, the question everyone is asking is “How long is this property boom going to last?” According to Simon Pressley, Head of Research from Propertyology, it’s highly likely we will continue to see this growth at least well into 2022. Anecdotally, we are still experiencing a high absorption rate and observing trends that also support this, with new Spring listings continuing to sell in a short time on market. We are still adding 200 buyers to our database every month, which has been consistent all year. It will be interesting to monitor if APRA’s recent request for banks to increase their serviceability buffers will slow any types of the record number of buyers coming to our area. Although the volume of rental property applicants has slightly softened, the rental supply remains tight. We encourage tenants seeking rentals to have all their application details ready for

submission and any investors with a property suitable for the rental market to contact us. Finalists for the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Awards for Excellence have been announced with some of our local agencies being recognised among the best in the state. At Wythes, we are proud to be leading the industry, having won the 2019 REIQ Innovation Award and 2020 Contribution to Community Award. In 2021 we are finalists again for the Contribution to Community Award together with Alisa Wythes and Caroline Johnston both being individual finalists for their respective categories, Residential Salesperson of the Year and Residential Rising Star of the Year. Congratulations to all agencies and agents who have been named as finalists. This is a huge achievement in itself and a testament to all you are doing to raise the bar in our industry. We look forward to representing the Noosa Hinterland at an awards gala later this month with the best in our industry attending to see winners announced.
