Cooroy well mystery deepens

WHO owns the old Cooroy Butter Factory well is as clear as its water.

Two years ago, the Cooroy Rag with the help of local stalwarts Max Arbuthnot, Alan Kenzler and Rob Jeffs lifted the lid on a decades-old mystery by confirming the concrete tank in Apex Park contains water and not sewage.

Since then, the Rag has been working hard to get to the bottom of the mystery of who owns this “liquid gold” source, used by the butter factory during its years of operation.

But after speaking at length with government and statutory authorities, it seems no one does.

Unitywater executive manager of customer delivery Rhett Duncan said it is not a part of Unitywater’s infrastructure.

“Unitywater can confirm the old Cooroy Butter Factory well is not part of our infrastructure.

“It is not connected to the drinking water supply or the wastewater network.”

Likewise, it is not a part of Seqwater’s infrastructure.

“This advice follows comprehensive checks including against our asset management list, reviewing spatial data, and performing a heritage search for local, state and Commonwealth listings.”

A Queensland Department of Resources spokesperson told the Rag in 2021 it has no record of the old well.

“Nothing comes up in our records or data about any well or bore in Apex Park. We assume it predates our records. But if it is in a council park, it is council responsibility.”

But Noosa Council communications manager Ken Furdek again said, while council is responsible for the upkeep of Apex Park, the ‘’manhole’’ is not listed on council’s asset registers.

So, if no one “owns” the well, does that mean the community can?

Even just to acknowledge it is the old Cooroy Butter Factory well with a sign or perhaps a mural on the concrete tank.

IT is a sad day for Cooroy. The loss of long-time local Jill Frankel has been felt keenly by all who were blessed to know her.

Cooroy History

Jill is well known in town for her years working at the Cooroy Hotel, running her florist, Bloomin’ Cooroy, in Maple Street, and her dedication as a Blue Care nurse.

For me, Jill was there from the moment I was born.

My godmother, she is woven into the fabric of my childhood: cricket on their lawn on Christmas Day, sleepovers, long lunches on their verandah.

She is jangly silver bangles, white linen shirts and a contagious husky laugh.

While I have lost my godmother, my mum has lost her best friend; a man has lost his wife; children, their mother; grandchildren, their grandmother; and many a friend, a confidant.

There is a giant Jill-shaped hole in so many lives that can never be filled.

They say time heals all wounds, but I don’t think any amount of time will ever heal the loss of losing Jill.

As they say, grief is the price of loving, and she was so loved.

Jill’s life will be celebrated on Thursday 17 August at 10 am at Drysdale Funerals, 27 Butler Street, Tewantin.

State’s plan to increase shire’s population

dents in the future for the Noosa Shire is not feasible nor sustainable.

“That is 13,000 more than what we can sustainably carry, equivalent to Christmas peak season every day. There are many who have fought so hard for Noosa over the decades, including for de-amalgamation, and we need to fight again, for our communities, our environment and our economy.”

regional plan.

“It's our view that there's been a distinct lack of genuine collaboration, and they've disregarded the voices of individual local governments.

“Local councils are best positioned to understand the individual needs and capacities of their communities and yet our voices haven't been heard in this process.

community’s interests, both to the Minister and Premier directly, as well as through the SEQ Regional Council of Mayors. Residents too can make their individual voices heard.

“It is crucial that our voices are heard, and that the State considers the individual needs and capacities of each of our own communities," Cr Stewart said.

Regional Plan.

“Should the state government retain these figures after public consultation and our advocacies, we shall be calling on everyone again to load onto buses. We need everyone behind us,” Sandy said.

THE state government's plan to increase Noosa Shire’s population has raised major concerns.

The government’s draft South East Queensland Regional Plan calls for Noosa to accommodate an additional 19,100 people by 2046 and to possibly accommodate increased building heights of between four and eight storeys in some locations.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said this is unrealistic.

“As we understand it, the State expects us to accommodate more than half of the 19,100 population increase – around 10,000 people – in the next two-tothree years, which is very concerning.

“It's unrealistic and will place a huge strain on our infrastructure, environment and amenity.”

Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton said the projected permanent population of 76,000 resi-

Cr Stewart said the State's push for a relaxation of building heights to allow apartment buildings between four and eight storeys in some areas is similarly concerning.

“If this were to occur, it would greatly impact the character and look and feel of Noosa. What makes us unique is our distinct lack of high-rise structures, and this draft plan seemingly undermines something that we hold dear and have fought so long and hard to protect and maintain.”

Mayor Stewart said Noosa Council was disappointed with the way the State developed the draft

"There's barely anything of significance for Noosa in the state's draft regional infrastructure plan, despite the population increase they're expecting us to accommodate in a short period.

“The State has shifted the burden of accommodating another 2.16 million people in South East Queensland over the next 20 years back onto the local councils.”

Cr Stewart said Council’s concerns were made known at a meeting in Brisbane with state officials, mayors, and senior planning staff from across South East Queensland.

“We will continue to advocate strongly to protect our

Sandy said she will be working together with Noosa Council to demonstrate to the state government why the projections for the Noosa Shire in the draft plan are not sustainable nor sensible for Noosa communities and broader Queensland.

“It is time to be vigilant and for all to get involved as we do not need any additional strain on our environment, infrastructure and amenities, nor on the character and built environment that makes Noosa a unique destination and home.”

Council and Sandy are urging residents to have their say on the state's draft South East Queensland

Have your say on the state’s draft plan

THE State Government will hold a local in-person consultation session where locals can talk to state planners about the Draft SEQ Regional Plan at ‘Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church (Noosa District) Parish Hall’ 5 Moorindil St, Tewantin on Tuesday 29 August from 4 to 6 pm. Residents can view and have a say on the state's draft plan online at shapingseq. statedevelopment.qld.gov. au. Submissions close at 11.59 pm on 20 September 2023.

Cr Stewart, pictured next to Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding and Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann, makes Noosa Council’s concerns known at a meeting in Brisbane.

MEMBER for Noosa Sandy Bolton’s office has advised the email address supplied for residents to give feedback on Cooroy intersections (“Cooroy intersections ‘concerning’”, Cooroy Rag 26 July) was incorrect.

Sandy’s office said the

minister’s office provided them with the wrong Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) email address.

“The correct email address for resident feedback is NCR_Planning_Comms @tmr.qld.gov.au.

“We would like to thank all the residents who were quick to let us know, and continue to encourage everyone who would like to see these intersection upgrades to please provide feedback to TMR.”

Koala hit on Pomona road

DRIVERS are being reminded to keep an eye out for koalas on the road after a male was hit on Yurol Forest Drive in Pomona recently.

Noosa & Sunshine Coast Region Koala Rescue Team – Wildcare Australia said the lady that hit the koala called them immediately.

“We were able to locate him and he is now receiving medical treatment at the wonderful Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

“Koalas are on the move – it's breeding season here until December, so please be alert.”

During breeding season, koalas travel further distances, particularly during dusk and dawn, looking

for a mate.

“This puts them at higher risk of being hit by a vehicle.

“Any koala hit by a vehicle must receive immediate veterinary care to give it the best chance of survival.

“If you find a koala that may have been hit, please

call our rescue hotline immediately on 5527 2444.

"Use a blanket or towel to prevent the koala from moving away or up a tree if safe to do so, or please stay at the location with the koala in view, if safe to do so, until our rescuers arrive.”

Members vote yes to GemLife development

COOROY Golf Club members have cast their vote about the proposed GemLife development.

Cooroy Golf Club finance director Rod Booth said members voted to support the development application at a special general meeting last month and authorised the management committee to enter into a formal agreement with GemLife on terms the

committee consider appropriate.

“At the meeting, 91 members voted for it, and 39 against it. The outcome was not surprising as there has consistently been majority support from members for the project at information sessions and previous special general meetings.”

Pay rates by due date for discount

RATEPAYERS have until the end of the week to pay their rates to receive the discount.

Noosa Council is encouraging ratepayers to make their payment by the Friday 18 August due date to take advantage of the five per cent discount on the general rate.

Payments can be made via BPAY, online at council’s website, with a credit card over the phone, over the counter at any Australia Post office, in person at council offices in Tewantin, or by direct debit either via a total deduction on the rates due date or regular periodic deductions.

next to the Cooroy Golf Club was refused by Noosa Council in 2021.

GemLife then engaged a legal team to pursue the Planning & Environment Court’s approval of the proposal.

In April this year, it was reported GemLife intended to make minor changes to the proposed site layout and file these changes with the Planning & Environment Court.

The GemLife appeal hearing began in the Planning and Environment Court in Brisbane on 26 July.

"Once the hearing is finished, the judge has to make his decision and that could take some time," Rod said.

In exchange for the 1.764 ha of golf club land, GemLife has committed to deliver to the Cooroy Golf Club a new golf house, pro shop, golf buggy storage for 40 carts, a new sealed 89-space car park, new entry road and course improvements, as well as 214 new golf memberships.

Deputy to run for mayor

NOOSA Deputy Mayor

Frank Wilke will run for mayor at the March 2024 Local Government Elections.

Cr Wilkie said he has decided to throw his hat in the ring after Mayor Clare Stewart signalled her intention to run for the state seat of Noosa.

“It is an early call, but In light of the recent events, I wanted to offer the community and organisation a sense of continuity and stability up to and beyond the March 2024 elections.

“It is not the only factor, but I am hoping our community will understand that experience in the field of local government does count.”

The former journalist served as a Noosa councillor in 2007-08 prior to amalgamation, from 20142016 after de-amalgamation

and as deputy mayor since 2016.

Cr Wilkie said since de-amalgamation, Noosa has been constantly adapting to pressures brought by rapid and relentless change, which is only accelerating.

“Now more than ever, we need our council to hold fast to core principles while improving delivery of quality services and protecting the natural assets and low-key lifestyle we all love.

“Noosa is a community first and a destination second. If we look after the things residents value first, then by default it will also be a great place to visit.”

Cr Wilkie said he has a strong record of support for the Noosa Planning Scheme and evidence-based initiatives that protect Noosa’s beaches, rivers, waterways

and open spaces and projects fostering economic innovation.

“In recent years, we’ve seen record voting against the Noosa Planning Scheme and evidence-based environmental projects, fortunately by a slim minority. With so many pressures seeking to undermine what Noosa is, we don’t have the latitude for that now.”

A COOROY-born woman has turned 100, receiving a card from the King and Queen.

Mary Dingwall, nee Murphy, was born in Cooroy Hospital on 21 July 1923.

Mary’s niece Robin Purvis said Mary was the sixth of eight children and the only one to be born in Cooroy.

“Mary’s father, William Murphy, was the policeman in Tewantin at the time.

They were early days and when her mother, Agnes Murphy nee Scanlan, went into labour, my grandfather had to transport her to the Cooroy Hospital via dirt roads on a horse and dray.

“The family moved from Tewantin to Brisbane where Mary and her three sisters attended All Hallows School for their secondary schooling. Leaving school at 17, she gained employment with Queensland State Insurance.”

Robin said Mary’s brother Jim pioneered sand mining

in Australia.

“His company, Murphyores, achieved notoriety in the 1970s when mining K’gari (Fraser Island). Mary joined the company in the 1950s and helped in the mine, including driving trucks.

“Years later, Mary took her driving test in England, having somehow driven until then on an international licence, and at the end of the test an alarmed examiner pointed to the rear-view mirror and asked her what it was for. ‘It’s a make-up mirror,’ she replied. She did not pass her test.”

Robin said Mary was an incurable romantic.

“She first met her husband, Munro Dingwall, when he visited Australia from London for business with Murphyores.

“The romance began and they met up in New York

subsequently and married in Canada in 1953. The couple honeymooned at Niagara Falls.”

Mary lives in London and has five children: Michael, Alix, Francis, Claudia and Christian; 13 grandchildren; and to date, six great-grandchildren.

“Mary has made many return trips to Australia and resided here for a number of years in the 1980s. She is proud of her Australian heritage.

“Her 100th birthday was warmly celebrated with her family around her.

“Interestingly, my husband and I moved to Cooroy some 93 years later in 2016 and were pleased to learn of the family continuity,” Robin said.

‘Yum Yum’, a true legend of Noosa

Multi Award Winning

HE was a man well-known for his iconic dune buggy. For 30 years, Noosa’s Ron “Yum Yum” Broughton travelled the sands of Teewah Beach delivering food to the Noosa North Shore in ‘The Buggy’.

Daughter Vicki Baker said it all started in the late 1970s when Ron had a dream of driving the beach to provide a food service to the sand miners and tourists.

“He found a VW Beetle and two VW campervan pop tops, and with the help of Howard Larsen and OZ East, The Buggy was born.

“Dad was big on promoting all the small businesses around Noosa and Tewantin. So he decided to take Mum and The Buggy on a promotional tour from Darwin to Toowoomba and Sydney, giving away Noosa holidays.

“He had sold promotional spaces on the buggy and away they went putting Noosa on the map.

“The Shopping Wheel was created for the compendiums in accommodation, the Noosa Treasure Trove Map for beachgoers and tourists to find what they were looking for while on holiday, the Yummy Tide Charts were created weekly by Noosa Graphica for 30 years, and of course Dad had his Friday 4SS beach report promoting Yummy Promotions.”

Ron was also an inventor.

“He developed the drinking chair in the 1960s, winning a New Zealand furniture exhibition award. He then reinvented the drinking chair in the 1980s Noosa style.”

Ron was also commissioned to upholster the seating for the Opera

House opening in the early 1970s.

Vicki said her dad was also a gentleman and protector.

“Dad had a great sense of responsibility and love for his family. He was always the provider and made sure his family was safe and secure with the help of Mum.

“The Eliza Fraser Story was important to him and for the area and he created leatherwork to tell the story.

“One of the most important things to Dad was the Noosa River and the Noosa Dreamtime.

“This is where Mum is and this is where Dad will meet her.”

Ron passed away on 30 June. He had two daughters, Vicki and Tracey Tyrie; two grandkids; and four great-grandchildren.

Big changes brewing at Joe’s

AN ICONIC Eumundi

Pub is undergoing extensive redevelopment and rebranding.

Joe’s Waterhole was purchased by Good Drinks Australia Ltd in November 2021 and work is underway to develop the historic pub into a family-friendly venue and brewery for the Matso’s brand.

Good Drinks head of

hospitality Lee Behan said the plan for the redevelopment is to keep the heritage and character of Joe’s while creating a venue that shows people what Matso’s is all about.

“Last November we held a community evening with locals and business owners to show them what we’re planning and to hear

their feedback.

“The family-friendly venue will include several different areas for locals and tourists alike. The original front bar will pretty much stay as is, and the venue will include an on-site brewery producing Matso’s core range of drinks along with rotating taps of limited-release and

venue-only brews.”

With poker machines not a part of the vision, Lee said they recently sold the venue’s gaming licences for $4.9 million, which will majority fund the redevelopment.

“The venue and micro-brewery have been approved by the local council so work is now underway and on

track for opening later in 2023.”

Broome-born brand Matso’s is known for creating Australia’s first alcoholic ginger beer.

“It is Australia’s number one independent ginger beer. Matso’s Mango Beer was also an Aussie first, and is part of a stable of drinks across the Matso’s range,” Lee said.

Out of Africa adventure

COOROY travel agents

Peter and Jacky Emery are well known for their biannual Botswana wild camping safaris.

But every couple of years they like to throw in an extra, more-luxurious, special safari.

Peter said on 1 March 2024, they will be escorting a small-group luxury bushcamp safari through all the best wilderness locations in Kenya, home of the movies Out of Africa and Born Free.

“We’ve partnered with Gamewatchers Safaris who operate beautiful permanent tented camps in a variety of locations.

“It is a 15-day/14-night safari visiting Amboseli National Park, Meru National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy in the shadow of Mount Kenya, and the highlight – the Masai Mara Game

Reserve.

“We fly on a light aircraft between locations in order to be able to spend more time with the wildlife and no time at all on long, hot, dusty cross-country drives.

“The tents at the bushcamps are huge, often containing two queen-sized beds and a lounge area. They have an ensuite shower and flushing toilet and of course, lighting inside the tent. The great thing about being under canvas is that although you are experiencing a high level of comfort, you can still hear the sounds of the nighttime wildlife. It’s quite magical.”

Peter said the first two nights will be spent at the four-star Tamarind Tree Hotel in Nairobi, with a day trip to visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant

Orphanage, The Giraffe

Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.

“The Karen Blixen Museum is actually situated in Karen Blixen’s farmhouse of Out of Africa fame. The first words of the film are:

‘I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills’, and you can still see those same Ngong Hills today from the farmhouse, although it has since been swallowed up by a suburb called appropriately ‘Karen’.”

Peter said all meals and drinks in the bushcamps are included and the food is superb.

“This really is a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to experience a real Out of Africa adventure.”

Real-world sounds,

More than 7 out of 10 hearing aid users are challenged by disruptive sounds.

These include:

• Ringing phones

• Blowing wind

• Clicking keyboards

• Slamming doors

• Rattling keys

• Creaking doors

• Tapping fingertips

Soft and loud sounds are everywhere. They are the sounds of the real world.

Together, they provide richness and meaning to an environment. But for

most hearing aid users, those everyday sounds can be disruptive, which can be challenging on a daily basis.

As a hearing aid user, you want those sounds to be available without being disruptive.

You want to hear the turn signal in your car without stealing your focus. Or hear the sound of chopping vegetables, without interrupting a conversation with dinner guests.

Traditional hearing aid technology has been too slow to react, leading to unnatural overamplification of these sounds.

Introducing Oticon Real™. Oticon Real™ introduces new innovative

technology — designed to handle the real sounds of life.

Oticon Real™ provides access to all relevant sounds, in balance, with exceptional detail and clarity. These sounds are produced with minimal disruption to remain comfortable, focused, and sharp in the real world.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, I write with regard to the ongoing issue of the intersections in Cooroy and the need for them to be upgraded. I want to appeal to all those advocating for roundabouts to please consider the children, cyclists, pedestrians and elderly of the town when pushing for the constant traffic flow which seems to be the only reason for roundabouts to be a preferred option.

I feel that most people disdaining traffic lights are doing so as they are in a hurry and do not want to stop for any reason in their haste to reach their destination. And for this, traffic lights are the only solution.

Traffic lights need to be at the corner of Diamond and Elm Streets on all three sides of the intersection. This would also ensure safe vehicular entry to the railway station. The traffic

lights should incorporate pedestrian signals and crossings, which would give people of all ages and abilities an opportunity to cross safely knowing the vehicles have come to a complete stop.

Children should be able to walk to school safely. The train station and bus stops should be able to be safely accessed by residents and visitors of all ages and abilities. People living on the east side should be able to stroll to the shops or walk their dogs to the parks on the west side of town.

Drivers should accept that passing through a town this size will require them to cater to the needs of the people in the town. They may need to stop, but traffic lights will provide assurance as to how long that stop will be. It may even be quicker than some of the current wait times. -

AS we keep our promise to deliver more infrastructure to our community than ever before, Lawnville Bridge is set to receive a $2.33 million renovation. The new bridge will help boost safety and connectivity and its replacement is one of several bridge projects Noosa Council is delivering as part of our Bridge Renewal Program for 2023/2024. The new two-lane concrete bridge will require less maintenance and has been designed to ensure it serves the community well for more than 100 years. With works scheduled to start in August 2023, the existing bridge will be closed and traffic detoured via Cooroy Belli Creek Road. The new bridge is expected to be completed by mid-November 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting so we greatly appreciate your patience during the construction period.

As we talk connectivity, Council recently met with the local community of

Cooroy and Noosaville to gather feedback on walking and potential barriers people may face. Information gathered is shaping our Walking Network Plan priority program which will underpin targeted improvements designed to get more people out and about walking. Council contractors have already completed pathway constructions in Maple and Miva Streets in Cooroy which were identified as high priorities and we are continuing our commitment in creating a better connected and safer network.

As we continue to wage our war on waste – our highest cause of carbon emissions for council – earlier this year we invited our community to have a say on how we manage waste and lower emissions by diverting waste from landfill. We’ve been carefully listening to your feedback and perspectives on waste, recycling and working towards a shared vision for a greener future. During August 2023

we will be launching the second phase of community engagement on Council’s Draft Waste Plan and it outlines actionable steps that will lead us towards more sustainable waste management so please stay tuned for updates on how you can have your say on the Draft Plan!

In good news for our community and environmental groups, Council recently distributed more than $442,000 in support of 22 projects and organisations as part of the latest round of Noosa Council’s Environment and Climate Change grants. These grants are funded through the Environmental Levy to support the implementation of our Environmental Strategy which will help make a wide range of community initiatives possible.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the 5% early bird discount on the general rate and pay by 18 August 2023. Council offers a variety of rates payment options including BPAY, online

via our website, credit card by phone, over the counter at Australia Post or at our offices at 9 Pelican Street Tewantin.

Finally, a huge thanks to everyone who took part in the annual National Tree Day planting event on Sunday 30 July 2023. This event, held in partnership with the Kin Kin Bushcare Group, helped improve our environment for generations to come. National Schools Tree Day was also a big success. It was a great opportunity to inspire and educate future generations on the many benefits of trees while nurturing their connection with nature. In an initiative proposed by me to get our kids more involved, Noosa Council, in conjunction with Noosa and District Landcare, supplied over 150 free native plants to nine Noosa schools for planting and it was wonderful to see how excited and knowledgeable our students were in regard to the importance of trees and tree planting. THE Albanese Government is putting so-called misinformation laws before the Australian Parliament, and I’m concerned they will attack one of the cornerstones of our democracy – freedom of speech and expression.

Under the proposed legislation, the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combating Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2023, there would be one rule for government members of Parliament and a different one for the public who want to have their say.

The bill will give extraordinary powers to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and lead to digital companies self-censoring the legitimately held views of Australians to avoid the risk of massive fines.

Under the proposed laws, ACMA would gain sweeping powers to require any Australian to appear at a time and place of its choosing to answer questions about misinformation or disinformation. Heavy fines would apply for non-attendance.

Some of the problems with the Bill include:

• The definition of “misinformation” is so broad that it could capture many statements made by Australians in the context of political debate;

• Authorised content by the Albanese Government can’t be misinformation, but criticisms of the Albanese Government by ordinary Australians can be misinformation;

• Nothing an academic says can be misinformation, but statements by somebody disagreeing with an academic can be misinformation;

• Good faith statements made by entertainers cannot be misinformation, but good faith statements made by ordinary Australians on political matters can be misinformation;

• Journalists commenting on their personal digital platforms could have their content removed as misinformation.

This Bill is fundamentally flawed, and I will be strongly opposing it.

There are two grant opportunities that will be of interest to local community and religious groups. Eligible organisations can apply for grants between $1,000 and $5,000 to purchase items to help their volunteers, reimburse fuel or transport costs, promote volunteering opportunities, or for training courses or background checks.

Expressions of interest can be accessed on my website llewobrien.com. au/volunteer-grants-program-2023-24/. Expressions of interest close on Friday 1 September 2023.

Religious schools, preschools, places of worship, and faith-based community centres can apply for funding to reduce the risk of religious and racial crime.

Eligible organisations can apply for grants between $25,000 and $500,000 for security infrastructure upgrades, including fencing, lighting, security cameras, traffic barriers, alarm systems, access controls, and engagement of security guards.

Applications for funding close 5 pm AEST on 11 September 2023. Further information can be found at business.gov.au or on my website www.llewobrien. com.au. Llew

THE draft ShapingSEQ 2023 Update has opened for consultation, with a projected permanent population into the future for the Noosa Shire, of 76,000 residents, which is not feasible nor sustainable. That is 13,000 more than what we can sustainably carry, equivalent to Christmas peak season every day. There are many who have fought so hard for Noosa over the decades, including for de-amalgamation, and we need to fight again – for our communities, our environment and our economy. To assist in efforts, we ask everyone to ensure they make a valid submission to the state government after attending the information session at 4 pm on 29 August at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church (Noosa District) Parish Hall, 5 Moorindil St, Tewantin. Registration for this and the draft, as well information on how to have your say through submissions, is available via Noosa 360 at SandyBolton.com/DraftSoutheast-Queensland-Re-

gional-Plan-August-2023.

In response to concerns raised that crime and alcohol-fuelled violence has escalated in Noosa, we have posted data and information to Noosa 360. Whilst we have a full complement of police officers, with 24/7 manned station and patrols, mobile police beat, and highway patrols that operate random breath tests and speed enforcement operations, the reality is that they cannot be everywhere at once. Hence, it is important for all of us to be their ‘eyes’ and report any suspicious or bad behaviour immediately, in efforts of prevention, to 000 (emergencies), or Policelink on 131 444 (non-emergencies), or online at Police.qld.gov.au/Policelink-Reporting. Also don’t forget to lock your cars and homes as many crimes are opportunistic. We continue to advocate for increased police resourcing throughout Queensland during the state budget estimates processes, as well as for mandatory and relocation sentencing,

and at any time there is a change in crime trends in our community, we immediately seek extra resources as we have done on many occasions which lead to specific responses such as ‘Operation Sandstorm’. Information on policing in Noosa is available at SandyBolton.com/Policing-in-Noosa-July-2023. We have a Noosa MP community survey open until 8 September on the proposed Cooloola Great Walk Eco Project which has created some confusion, and I ask that you take a minute to respond as well as share with your neighbours and friends as it is so important to have everyone’s voice heard! The survey is available at bit.ly/ CooloolaGreatWalkSurvey. With so much time between columns and much to share, please stay in the loop via Noosa 360 with updates on a range of important issues. Meet movie actor-director

ACTOR-DIRECTOR

Rachel

Ward will be at the Majestic Theatre Pomona on Thursday 24 August to present her new movie, Rachel’s Farm. In the uplifting documentary, Rachel sets out to regenerate her northern NSW beef farm with the help of experts and neighbours.

For many years, her Nambucca Valley property was a family retreat, conventionally farmed. When the 2019 Black Summer fires spared the farm, the near-miss sets Rachel thinking hard about

the future. Rachel challenges established farming practices and takes on a new approach.

Rachel’s Farm is about environmental threats and the story of one woman’s resolve to tackle them head-on, intent on making a difference.

There will be a discussion panel after the screening and a meet and greet with Rachel.

Doors and bar open at 5:30 pm, and the movie screens at 6:30 pm.

and public figures and take a sneak peek at what over 100 artists participating in the NOS in 2023 will offer in October.

The highlight of the night will be the auction of 25 artistically customised aprons by NOS artists. The apron – used by artists and chefs – is an iconic symbol of the link between art and food.

These art aprons are unique pieces of collectable art.

The auction will also include five ‘Master Artist Experiences’, which will give the winner the opportunity to spend a creative day with their favourite artist.

NOOSA Open Studios

(NOS) will hold their annual fundraiser auction on Friday 1 September from 5 to 8 pm at the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy. Patron for NOS 2023, chef Matt Golinski, will cater the event himself with a special surprise: a canapé specifically designed for our local art event. This canapé will look like an edible piece of art with the tastes of the region.

Meet with artists, art lovers

Artists from across Noosa Shire have taken part in the fundraiser, sharing their images and inspirations.

Tickets will be on sale soon and tickets and apron sales will contribute to supporting the Noosa Open Studios, which is a free event run by volunteers to promote local art and local artists.

Noosa Open Studios, now in its eighth year, is Queensland’s largest art trail, running from 6 to15 October.

This year over 100 local artists will be opening their doors to share the space they create in. Across 10 days, including two weekends, and five trails, there is something for everyone to discover.

An exhibition of NOS artists’ work will be available at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre from August 31 to September 10 and the NOS art trail guide will also be available in early September. Noosa Open Studios is proud to continue its partnership with Noosa Shire Council, Tourism Noosa, Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, and Noosa Arts & Crafts Association (Wallace House).

Ag field day in the Mary Valley

What’s On

What: Agvention

When: Friday 1 September.

Where: Kandanga Farm Store, 93 Main St, Kandanga

A “FIELD day like no other” is being held in the Mary Valley. Kandanga Farm Store is hosting, for the third time, Agvention.

The brainchild of Farm

Store owners Tim and

Amber Scott, Agvention deviates from the field day norm by focusing entirely on the new style of agroecology that builds soils and embraces nature’s complexity.

The all-day speakers lineup includes practical farmers doing things differently, to advocates of Syntropic Farming, Biodynamics and Natural Sequence Farming, to others using animals to fix land, and a nutritionist farmer with a master’s project that makes use of our most common ‘weed’.

From commercial ag

drones to regenerative ag planting equipment, all specialised machinery that builds rather than destroys soils will be shown on-site in live displays.

There will also be product suppliers to talk with and work with, home-cooked local food and at the end of the day an informal dinner by donation to the Lachlan Hughes Foundation, the AGF biggest radish competition, and a $5,000 pool of lucky door prizes.

If you eat and care, lock in a trip to a “field day like no other”.

King of the Mountain 2023

Community comes together for KOM

THIS year, King of the Mountain (KOM) celebrated 44 years with a huge event on Sunday 23 July.

KOM chairperson Heather Manders said the KOM team and the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club are so proud and honoured to continue to host this community event.

“Our focus this year was to concentrate our efforts on the two circuits: the Mountain Challenge circuit and the Prince and Princess Race circuit.

“The Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge saw 74 competitors competing, and the Prince and Princess Race saw 63 competitors

completing their course.

“Congratulations to all the competitors who entered the races.”

Heather said organising the event is a mammoth task made possible by the KOM team, community groups, volunteers and of course, sponsors.

“A big thank you to our amazing KOM team: Barry, Brian, Dan, Hayley, Jeff, Leslie and Vicki, who all work tirelessly behind the scenes ticking off all the jobs that are required to run the KOM event.

“A special thanks to our retiring KOM race director Dan King for his dedication

over the past five years.

“Thank you to all the Lions Club crew, Friends of Lions volunteers, and Noosa Heads Lions Club for their help on the day.

“Special thanks to Jeff Langton and his wonderful band of volunteers for organising the Venture Cycles Mountain Bike Ride on the Noosa Trail.

“Thank you to our community partners which include SES, Pomona & District Community House, The Majestic Theatre, Pomona Railway Station Gallery, Pomona Markets, Noosa Museum, Pomona Fire Station, and Historical Engines

– Gympie & Wide Bay, for helping make the day a huge success.

“Thank you to Noosa Council and all our local community groups who attended and had a stall at our event.

“Many thanks to all the Bendigo Bank staff for helping on the day, and MC Toby Cootes.

“Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who helped at the event – marshals on the mountain, track, road: SES, Noosa Ultra and Trail Runners, parents, Bec (mountain goat) and community members.

“Thanks to the team from

the Qld Parks and Wildlife Service for assisting us with the event and allowing us to continue the race and keeping us mindful that Mount Cooroora is a very special mountain.

“And finally, thanks to all our funding bodies, sponsors and supporters – the KOM event could not exist without the kind sponsorship and funding,” Heather said.

KOM is sponsored and supported by Bendigo Bank Cooroy, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy RSL, Design Divaz, Grow Landscapes, Gympie Skips, IGA Pomona, Livelife Pharmacy, Majestic

New name, same senior care and support

The Ultimate Kenya Game Watchers Safari

NOOSA Council’s senior support organisation has changed its name. Noosa Community Support is now Noosa Seniors.

Noosa Seniors’ coordinator Justin Morgan said the change aims to heighten awareness of the organisation’s primary purpose.

“We exist to provide a way to connect with and support our seniors in the Noosa Shire to be active and lead independent lives.

“We continue to evolve as an organisation and the name change is more contemporary to help clearly articulate what we do and why we are here.

“The inclusion of ‘seniors’ in our name aims to make it easier for clients and those in our shire to find and connect with us, but also to help the community understand what we do.

“We want Noosa Seniors to be recognised as the central hub of senior support in our community,” Justin said.

GARDEN WASTE GOES FULL CIRCLE

Your humble garden waste bin is not only helping to keep organic waste out of landfill where it produces methane gas, but also supports a circular economy within the Shire.

Cootharaba Macadamia farmers Dan and Belinda Blanco have been using the doublegrind mulch – produced from green waste collected in the bins - for the past three years to promote crop growth across their 150-hectare plantation.

Mr Blanco said the mulch – which is replacing chemical fertilisers – is great for their business, BELMAC, by helping build heathier soils rich in microbial activity.

“The trees and grasses are thriving in it and it’s paying dividends via increased yields and a 70% reduction in erosion,” he said.

“We have reduced our nitrogen input by over 85 percent.

“For BELMAC to use a product that is essentially made from green waste to become cleaner and greener with our farming methods is the future of our commercial farming.

“It’s also cost effective and convenient to apply.”

Council’s Waste Manager, Kyrone Dodd, said residents could support the circular economy process by ensuring only organic garden waste ends up in their garden waste bins. The garden waste is processed into both single and double-grind mulch which every resident can access for use in their gardens. The mulch is available in single-grind format for free, and double-grind format for $20 per cubic metre from Council’s Eumundi-Noosa Road Resource Recovery Centre.

NEW NAME, SAME SERVICE FOR OUR SENIORS HUB

Noosa Community Support is changing its name to better reflect who it provides its services and support to.

It’s a name change and a new look, but its support for Noosa’s local seniors remains the same. The new name Noosa Seniors was unveiled this week.

The work to support seniors has operated under the name of Noosa Community Support since 2015, but the name change is to better reflect our core mission of providing support and services to those

who are eligible.

“We exist to provide a way to connect with and support our seniors in the shire, so they can be active and lead independent lives,” Noosa Seniors coordinator Justin Morgan said.

“We continue to evolve as an organisation and including “seniors” in our name aims to make it easier for clients and those in our shire to find and

connect with us.”

Noosa Seniors is the central hub of senior support in the Noosa community.

“What’s important is that for our clients, we remain committed to delivering exceptional services as part of the Noosa Council team,” Mr Morgan said.

“The same high standards of quality, innovation, and

customer satisfaction that clients have come to expect will continue,” he said.

Noosa Seniors operates under the management of Noosa Council and the organisation strives to support seniors to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE DRAFT WASTE PLAN!

action on diverting waste from landfill. As a result, the forthcoming Draft Waste Plan will include actionable steps that lead toward a more sustainable waste management approach”.

IN BRIEF

In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of waste management and to reduce emissions from waste going to landfill, Noosa Council asked the community during February and March their views on waste to achieve a greener, more sustainable future.

An impressive 85% of respondents expressed concern about organic compostable materials ending up in landfill, highlighting a collective desire across the Shire for more environmentally-friendly waste disposal methods.

One key takeaway from the feedback was the

community’s perspective to take responsibility for waste management.

“The community suggested implementing effective waste sorting practices, selfeducation about recycling methods, and actively seeking opportunities for item reuse and repair,” said Kyrone Dodd, Manager Waste and Environmental Health.

“It is clear that the community is willing to put in extra effort to ensure improved waste management solutions are achieved.”

“The community also looks to Council for leadership and

Looking ahead, Mr Dodd said Noosa Council is gearing up to launch the second phase of community engagement in August, providing a further opportunity for the community to have their say on the Draft Waste Plan.

“This phase will be crucial in garnering further feedback and refining the strategies for an even greener future. The Draft Waste Plan aims to chart a path toward effective waste diversion and lower emissions, ultimately making the Noosa Shire a greener place for generations to come”.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay informed and engaged to actively contribute to this critical initiative.

Stay tuned for updates on how you can have your say on the Draft Waste Plan in August!

REVITALISING THE HEART OF POMONA

In an exciting move initiated by Noosa Council, a new placemaking project is looking to collaborate with the local community to find out what makes Pomona tick.

Placemaking is about designing authentic places that cater to people, promoting human interaction and ensuring local people get involved in identifying what is important to them in their community.

The project’s mission is clear - to create welcoming and engaging places and spaces that reflect the unique identity of Pomona while fostering a sense of belonging among residents and visitors alike.

Council’s Environment and Planning Director Kim Rawlings said the Pomona community will be invited in mid-August to get involved with the project, providing valuable input and creative ideas throughout the

planning process.

“Through collaboration with the community, the pilot project will help to identify Pomona’s strengths and new opportunities,” she said.

The project is the first investigation into how

placemaking could be approached across the Shire. Keep an eye out on Council’s website and social media channels for more information about the upcoming Pomona Placemaking pilot project.

THE office of Sandy Bolton MP has allocated $30,000 of its operating budget for QuickStart/Emergency grants to assist community organisations facing increased costs and volunteer shortages.

Sandy Bolton said the past 12 months have again been challenging for many organisations, and these small emergency relief grants make a real difference until governments develop better funding assistance models in response to these challenges.

She has seen many changes in products, procedures and safety over the years. She has travelled to conferences nationally and internationally to ensure she knows the cutting edge procedures, using the best quality products, to help clients achieve their aesthetic goals.

“Our volunteer organisations need as much support as possible and often miss out on other funding avenues, as do our volunteers who give of their skills and time free of charge.

Both have been impacted by cost-of-living increases including for fuel to deliver assistance to our community, and this is our small way of acknowledging their sacrifices and the amazing work they do,” Sandy said. Thirty small organisations delivering support or services to the Noosa electorate were successful in their applications.

Organisations that received assistance include Tewantin Noosa Meals on Wheels, Pomona Community HouseCooran Organic Gardens, Cooroora Netball, Katie Rose Hospice, Kin Kin Community Group, Pomona Men’s Shed, Noosa FM, Noosa Pipe Band, Noosa Basketball, Noosa Softball, NICA, Noosa Lions Foot-

Sandy said state members of parliament have a set amount of funds allocated to operate their electorate offices for the purchase of equipment, mailouts, community event hosting, as well as other day-to-day expenses.

“MPs can also use these funds for advertising on billboards, newspapers and radio, which I have never supported as I believe, where possible, these funds should be used to benefit the residents of the electorate rather than the office-bearer.”

Sandy said she and her staff are extremely frugal, to ensure there is direct monetary aid available each year.

Not-for-profits receive funding

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, was in Cooroy and Pomona recently to present community organisations with funding.

Llew said 27 not-for-profit organisations from throughout Wide Bay received grants of $1,000 to $5,000, and shared more than $66,000 in funding from this round of Volunteer Grants.

“Every volunteer’s contribution, no matter how big or small, is extraordinary because that person cares enough to serve their community and give freely of their time, expertise, and resources to improve the lives of others. Wide Bay communities would not be the same without them,” Llew said.

Pomona Meals On Wheels was awarded $5,000 under the latest round of Volunteer Grants funding to provide reimbursement of fuel costs

for the volunteers, who use their own vehicles to make deliveries to the Meals on Wheels’ clients.

The Cooroora Historical Society will safeguard the Noosa Museum’s extensive collection of photographs, documents and artefacts, thanks to a $3,700 grant from Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Program.

The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club will receive $9,000 to support the ongoing restoration of the Rotunda War Memorial, including the installation of a memorial seat and plaque, funded by the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program, and a $2,675 Volunteer Grant to purchase a trailer for their recycling program.

PTSD Dogs Australia has been awarded $3,000 from the Australian Government

Volunteer Grants to assist with training and supplying service dogs for veterans and first responders. The funding will be used to conduct background checks, supply foster carer packs, and provide fuel vouchers for volunteers.

Llew and his guest, the Hon David Littleproud, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Leader of the Nationals, visited each organisation to present them with their cheques.

Llew, together with the Cooroy Pomona RSL, also hosted a policy roundtable discussion recently with the Shadow Minister for Veteran Affairs, Barnaby Joyce, to discuss the improvements that need to be made to Veteran service to ensure the people who defend our nation and secure our freedom have the recognition and support they deserve.

An opportunity to enrich the lifestyle of Cooroy and near hinterland towns

Since 2021, Woolworths has owned the vacant six-hectare site at 125 Myall Street Cooroy, opposite the Cooroy Golf Club. Have your say

We will be considering an overall design that reflects Cooroy’s heritage, and the unique village feel, with environmentally sustainable measures. We would like to hear your ideas before we progress with our plans.

The community is invited to contribute at an early stage to ensure plans best meet the needs of local people and their families. It is important we hear from you to contribute to the design of the site and the integration with the fabric of the community.

New queen of KOM

KING of the Mountain (KOM) Bendigo Bank Challenge has a new queen.

Local boxer Ange Harries swapped the ring for mountain running to be crowned this year’s queen, with a time of 40:22.

Cooroy Mountain Park

Run organiser Andy Town said Ange set off fast from the gun and was in second place at the summit of the mountain, quickly moving into first place about 20 m into the descent.

“Leading up to the race

Ange said: ‘I felt great, calm, open to joy, ready to race. I thought I could win as soon as I overtook the second-placed woman. I knew I could win when the girl behind me didn’t catch me on the heartbreak hill.’

“When asked if she felt strong during the race, her candid response was: ‘You never feel strong on the mountain; you always feel like you are getting your ass handed to you, but I felt like I was coping very well with the beating!’”

Ange, an Impact Boxing Academy and Fitness

Centre boxer, first raced KOM Mountain Challenge in 2013.

“Ange said after the race:

‘I’m super happy to finally be the Queen of the Mountain!’,” Andy said.

Last year’s queen, Lee Cleary, finished third this year in the female open and first in the female junior with a time of 40:51, while Katy Booth finished second in the female open with a time of 40:48.

Meanwhile, Jorge Hernaez Navarro was crowned King of the Mountain with a new record time of 31:15.

Jorge set the record for the new longer course, beating last year’s time of 31:24 set by Mark Bourne.

Andy said Jorge left nothing out on the gruelling mountain challenge.

“Jorge said before the race: ‘I had a good feeling. I landed in Australia four days ago from Spain where I was on holiday to see the family. I had also won a race in Spain, so I was feeling good for today.’

“Jorge in describing his run said: ‘Right at the start of the race, two people started running very hard and I decided not to follow them because I know the race quite well and the pace I have to take to win.

“‘The most important thing for me is to get to the

base of the mountain with strength – that’s where the real race starts. I followed the pace I had set. I didn’t want to force myself because this year I have big goals and I didn’t want to get injured.

“‘Even so, when I came down the mountain I first looked at my watch and saw that I could set a record. But I didn’t believe it until I got to the finish line and I really had stopped the clock on a new record for the new course. It was incredible. I didn’t expect it at all.’”

Andy said that Jorge, reflecting on his performance, thinks it is the people of Pomona who make runners draw strength and energy from where they didn’t think they had it.

“Jorge said that the race, the organisation, the history and the people make it so special to come here year after year.”

Daniel Kerekes finished second in the male open with a time of 34:57 and Romney Rayner finished third with 37:50.

In the Prince and Princess Race, Lachie Hudson finished as Prince with a time of 11:47 and Charlotte Reed as Princess with 12:20.

live in our subconscious mind up to 95 per cent of the time, patterns and actions are often repetitive and can work against us, as we often make the same decisions or have the same thoughts.

“With Pho-toi (pho, short for photography and toi, the Maori word for art) photographing images of how we are feeling and how we like to feel, takes us more into the present moment and the conscious mind.

AFTER sinking her teeth into eight years of study, a local dentist has completed her PhD.

Tewantin Family Dental owner and dentist Dr Arosha Weerakoon recently graduated with her PhD from The University of Queensland (UQ).

Arosha said she started her PhD with UQ in 2015 so graduating was quite a milestone.

“A lot of my patients in Cooroy were aware of my studies and they were always so supportive.

“I studied how the mineral and collagen in our teeth change with age, and developed a new technique

to compare different filling materials from each other.

“My thesis title was ‘Dentine, Adhesive Interfaces & Physiological Ageing.’”

Arosha said she would like to thank her family, especially her husband Rob (who also works at Tewantin with her), son James, family and friends.

“I would also like to acknowledge my old work family at Cooroy Dental Surgery, particularly Dr Rick Robinson and his wife Linda Robinson, Dr Leesa Auckett, Dr Bronwyn Ahern and Dr Andrew Robinson and Julie, Vicki and Rebecca for their support and generosity.”

A TEWANTIN woman has written a book that helps people change the way they look at an issue through ‘photographic representation’.

Jackie Hillegers, a creative arts therapist and counsellor, said the book came about because she wanted to help

reduce mental illness in her community while incorporating her greatest love which was photography.

“I started photographing weddings and families back in the film days and have used photography as a means to express myself in everyday life, as well as

using it daily with my clients.

“What I did not realise is just how powerful it was as a healing tool for others. I combined my knowledge, successful practices and experience to write a book on how to self-heal by using your smartphone.”

Jackie said because we

“Pho-toi not only helps you see your issue in a healthy new light but it also creates new neural pathways to help rewire your brain.

Jackie’s book Pho-toi, The Art of Photographic Expression is currently being used in schools, with NDIS clients, and for neuro-divergent clients, There are two copies available at the Noosa Library and it is also available for purchase in print and as an e-book on Amazon.

“I am also available to speak about this exciting new way of healing in schools, businesses or groups. You can contact me through my website pheatherine.com.

“We use our phones 24/7, so why not put them to good use.”

Monthly market wrap up

THE Australian property market is demonstrating continued resilience, as national home prices experienced a seventh consecutive monthly rise, ticking up by 0.16 per cent in July. This is according to the latest report from PropTrack’s Home Price Index. Eleanor Creagh, a senior economist at PropTrack, commented on the recent market dynamics: “Although total stock on market has increased slightly, the flow of new listings has remained soft in recent months, leading to increased buyer competition and solid selling conditions.” The decision by the Reserve Bank to hold the cash rate steady in July has also helped to bolster confidence among market participants.

February this year and our region is still highly sought after, offering incredible value when compared to Sydney and Melbourne prices.

Hinternoosa is extremely proud of the exceptional results our team continues to deliver for our clients. In July alone, we welcomed 344 groups through our open homes and celebrated 11 sales within a nineday period for our clients.
