New visitor experience for Cooroy

BY ALEX PURCELL COOROY’S RV Stop Over is getting a makeover.

The current Stop Over off Mary River Road will be upgraded to create a visitor experience, including an information booth with a specially-designed locality map.

As an initiative of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, President Chris Bell said the project has taken 15 months to come to fruition and has been made possible through a “generous” grant from Tourism Noosa.

“The grant money from Tourism Noosa will be used for landscaping on the site, with this comprising planting 34 trees of different sizes and species, as well as some other general improvements,” Chris said.

Tourism Noosa CEO Melanie Anderson said the funding, as part of the Noosa Villages Tourism Funding Boost, was provided to business and chamber associations, including the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce.

“Our funding for Cooroy has supported revamping of the RV park, specifically providing low maintenance landscaping around the park,” Melanie said.

Included in the upgrade is an information booth in the form of a “retro, recycled bus shelter” that is donated by Noosa Council.

“In the process of organising this project, information came to light that the original approved Council plans for the site had provision for an information booth. The plan even specified that Council would provide a recycled bus shelter for this purpose.”

Chris said that while the Chamber felt an information booth offered many opportunities, there was no point in having one unless they had some information to provide to the many visitors to the Noosa Hinterland.

embarked on the creation of a map, along the lines of the one which is so popular in the Noosa region.

“The map will include a local street directory of Cooroy, Lake Macdonald and Black Mountain, local attractions, a Hinterland locality map with QR codes for Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin that brings up new Tourism Noosa video presentations for each of the Hinterland villages, an introduction prepared by the Chamber, Tourism Noosa and Noosa Council and a business

directory for all Chamber of Commerce members, which is also accessible by a QR code.”

“It will be all-encompassing and comprehensive. We’re calling it ‘Cooroy - Gateway to the Noosa Hinterland’ and the initial print run will be 10,000 copies. These will be available in the information booth as well as around Cooroy in places such as the Butter Factory, the Library, RSL, IGA and many of the local businesses,” Chris said.

Melanie said the map and information booth will be great for

visitors seeking information on things to do and experience in the region.

“It will be great to have the information booth at the RV park. We know that visitors typically enjoy seeking out first-hand information about things to do and discover in a region from locals 'in the know'.”

Tourism Noosa will promote the new RV Stop Over, including the information booth, through the visitnoosa.com.au website.

“We will provide an improved website and content updates, as well as adding to blogs and

itineraries for visitors. Self-drive itineraries to discover Noosa and the Hinterland region are popular, so this will be welcome news for showcasing Cooroy,” Melanie said.

“Tourism Noosa congratulates the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce on being so proactive and driving this project to fruition. The Chamber is achieving great things for Cooroy and we are keen to assist where we can.”

Chris said that weather permitting, the project should be completed by the end of July.

HELLO from central New South Wales.

It has been more than four months now since we packed up our van to live full-time on the road, travelling around Australia.

And it is wonderful.

But it hasn’t been without its trials and tribulations.

There has been some adjustment to finding a balance that suits all but we now have a great routine that allows for work, school and exploring.

And exploring we have. We have been snorkelling on Lady Musgrave Island, noodling for opals at Lightning Ridge and riding horses along the Gwydir River.

We’ve helped out on farms and at camp drafts, discovered some amazing properties through Hipcamp and wandered through town after town learning about their history and people.

I feel so lucky to be able to have this incredible experience with my family while still doing what I love - writing for my beloved Cooroy Rag newspaper.

Working remotely isn’t new to me. I was an online journalist with News Corp for over 10 years, but it is all thanks to our incredible team, Judy, Jodi and Kristina and the invaluable help of Geoff that I have been able to do this.

I look forward to bringing you many more editions of the Cooroy Rag - from somewhere in Australia

Letters to the editor A big thank you to our Editor for such comprehensive feedback on Cooroy’s traffic issues (“No fix for our Elm Street nightmare”, Cooroy Rag, 23 March 2022). It is important that Cooroy understands why progress isn't made on solving the traffic grid.

Cooroy is its own enemy because of division. There has to be one consensus, one voice to start the ball rolling. The first point is to disprove TMR’s reasoning [for lights].

Secondly, to put forward a plan that proves freeing up traffic in a safe manner.

There are the two roundabouts, which must be raised to bring traffic to a 5 k/h speed, combined with wide islands together with widening of the rail overpass allowing traffic [trucks] safer access, less an angle, and

also allowing a bike path and pedestrian footpath. No private land will be utilised.

A second proposal is relocating the public school above the golf course. Not impossible and costing less than the first proposal.

The third proposal is the Frogmouth Lane bi-pass [2.7 kms]. This will be completed one day but is not the first priority, simply because it is local traffic essentially [not Noosa] that is causing the traffic grid.

Unite Cooroy or forever be relegated by indecision.

Thanking you, M.H. Prior, Cooroy Editor, In your article ‘Wet weather wreaks havoc on Botanic Gardens maintenance’ Cooroy Rag May 25 2022, the Council is blaming the recent wet weather for the dishevelled, unkempt

state of the Noosa Botanic Gardens at Lake Macdonald. I am a frequent visitor to the Lake Macdonald Gardens, and have been for many years, and agree with Jeannine Sewell, who says she is ‘very disappointed’ by the state of the gardens.

They are now and always have been in a very sorry state. But how can only two full time employees keep 8 hectares in good shape, even with the help of volunteers one day a week. It’s an impossible job as anyone who has any knowledge of looking after even a suburban home garden would know. The Council needs to stop pretending that all is AOK with the gardens and staff it appropriately.

Social housing development proposed

BY ALEX PURCELL THE applicant of a proposed social housing development for Cooroy is calling on the support of Council and the community.

An application for a material change of use of 55 and 70 Carpenters Road, Cooroy, to build 33 not-for-profit modular units to provide housing for single women over the age of 50 has been lodged with Noosa Council.

Applicant, Eco Cottages Director, Greg Phipps, said that the proposed development is an emergency response to the current housing crisis.

“This proposed project is about taking action. The current crisis in social housing and rental availability is in a very serious and dangerous situation now for the entire community. Of concern is the lack of on the ground action now.

“This proposed development will provide a diverse mix of 33 individual small, fully furnished, sustainable high-quality homes, comprising 13 two-bedroom dwellings and 20 one-bedroom dwellings on individual allotments on the sixacre block on Carpenters Road.”

Greg said this is an innovative project and one that could be utilised as a “pilot study” for planning development for social housing projects going forward.

“All sites and dwellings will only be sold to or leased to not-forprofit (NFP) organisations and or

approved registered Community Housing Providers (CHP) to provide perpetuity for social, affordable and sustainable housing on this site in the Noosa Shire for those in the community with the greatest need. That includes those suffering from domestic violence, single women over 50 and essential workers.”

Greg is calling on Council and the community to get behind this project.

“In Noosa Council’s Technical Report ‘Noosa Housing Needs Assessment 2021’, it is very evident that the Noosa Council is fully aware of the seriousness of the current crisis in social housing and has stated its desire to take action.

“This project is about taking action. It’s not intended as a precedent to undermine the intent of the Noosa Plan 2020 or as a proposal that will ignore strategies to be developed by Noosa Council’s Strategic Planning Team for social housing.

“We really need Council’s support. It is a moral obligation.”

“Officers have also raised concerns about the potential impact of the nearby sewage treatment plant on future residents. The information request was sent to the applicant on 13 April 2022 and is available on Council's website.

“The applicant has three months in which to respond to Council's information request, which may be extended by agreement with Council should the applicant require additional time to address the issues raised.

“Once the applicant responds to the information request, the application must be publicly notified for comment from the community,

and then the application will be assessed and reported to a future Council meeting,” Kerri said.

Greg is asking the community to write a letter of support when the application is publicly notified for comment.

THE design for the new Six Mile Creek Bridge is now finalised.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has completed the detailed design for a “sturdier, concrete bridge” to replace the existing timber bridge on Kin Kin Road.

The new bridge will be up to 3m higher than the existing structure and have a “significantly wider” bridge deck.

Its two 3.8m wide lanes will be capable of transporting traffic in each direction, which will remove need for motorists to stop and give way to opposing traffic.

While not a designated shared pathway, an additional 2.5m wide shoulder on each side of the bridge will improve accessibility for active transport users like bike riders.

The design also includes a dedicated turning lane into Bellbird Flat Road, road realignment on sections of Kin Kin Road for the approaches to the bridge, and adequate clearance on either side of the bridge to allow for a pedestrian walkway in the future, subject to funding.

The exisiting Six Mile Creek bridge will be replaced with a new, wider concrete structure

Tenders are expected to be called in mid-2022, with construction planned to follow later in the year, and expected to take 12 months to complete, weather and

conditions permitting.

Further updates such as commencement dates and expected disruptions will be provided by TMR.

CONSTRUCTION will soon begin to widen a section of Kin Kin Road.

Approximately 800m of road, from Turnbull Road to just north of Williams Road, will be widened to improve safety and road conditions.

Work by The Department of Transport and Main Roads’ contractor is expected to start in June and should be complete by early 2023, weather permitting.

Key works of the project include excavating the embankment on the western side of the road,

road widening, constructing new table drains, lengthening and replacing existing culverts, signage installation, vegetation clearing to accommodate the works and linemarking.

Construction will be undertaken predominately from Monday to Friday between 6 am and 6 pm but some occasional weekend and night work may be required.

During the construction phase, motorists can expect delays with single lane closures, reduced speed limit and some intermittent

property access restrictions.

This project is a part of a number of measures TMR has implemented to improve safety and conditions for motorists on sections of Kin Kin Road including increased monitoring and inspections, drainage improvement works and pavement repairs, pavement testing to inform the design and future works of this project, vegetation management to improve visibility and speed limit reductions on sections of the road.

From Cooroy to the Nullarbor - for love WAITING at a train station in a remote part of Western Australia after travelling across the country to meet a man she met online, Cooroy’s Nicole Gray wondered if perhaps he wasn’t real.

But “finally he arrived really late” and what began as a casual visit turned into a permanent tree change and rural romance of epic proportions.

Five years later, Nicole lives with her partner Greg in Rawlinna, an isolated locality on the Trans-Australian Railway, running their own business and working when they can on Greg’s family’s remote 750,000acre cattle station, 500km from Kalgoorlie.

Nicole said her lifestyle in Rawlinna is a “unique type of life” and she loves it.

“There are only three of us that live in Rawlinna; Greg, myself and the roo shooter.

“It’s essentially a railway town and there’s nothing here except for a few old houses and the original mailroom and post office, but it can grow to 15-20 people when there is work happening.

“It’s pretty vast out here, and it’s certainly not for everyone. You go without a lot of things but that brings you back to reality.

“Our business is called Nullarbor Transport Services, we do the local roads and also roads for the Aboriginal communities, general freight and livestock carting.

“Our life is so hectic we live out of suitcases either sleeping in the truck or sleeping in our swag as our work covers such a vast area including grading all the airstrips from Kalgoorlie to over the SA border to carting wool for Australia’s biggest sheep station to the Perth Wool Store.”

State School and later working in her family’s bike shop at Railway Square.

But cattle, horses and mustering is her blood.

“Before I met Greg, I used to contract muster for 10 years. I’ve always had horses and still have a property at Cooran. Dad doesn’t know where I got it from.”

As well as running their business, Nicole and Greg also work for the railway, setting up the Rawlinna Train Station for the arrival of the famous Indian Pacific train every Friday night and Monday morning.

“It comes into town twice a week and we do all the set-up like hanging lanterns along the train line.”

It was during a visit by Channel 9, doing a story on the Indian Pacific that Nicole and her rural romance was uncovered and aired om TV. “Channel 9 were here doing a story on the Indian Pacific and they interviewed me about Rawlinna. When they asked me where I was from and I said Cooroy, they asked me what brought me out here and they transferred the episode into a love story.

“It aired a couple of weeks ago but it can be streamed on Hello SA on 9Now. The

episode is Beyond Journey.”

It’s not Nicole’s first TV appearance since living in Rawlinna.

“The Melbourne Cup came through here and I was on Sunrise holding it. Not many people can say they’ve done that.”

It has been nearly three years since Nicole has been back home to Cooroy and she said she is looking to return for a visit soon.

But will Greg come with her?

“Greg was born on the Nullarbor and has never left the Nullarbor. He’s never seen anything like Cooroy.

When I met him he’d never even seen a concert. P!nk was touring so I booked VIP tickets. It was an eye-opener but he loved it.”

Nicole said they are like chalk and cheese but it works.

“I’m so out there and he’s so quiet.”

Nicole said they plan to keep living their unique lifestyle as long as they can.

In the meantime, some more getaways are on the cards after the couple recently took their first weekend off in five years to attend a friend’s wedding in Perth.

THE installation of flood gates at two Hinterland bridges has been proposed.

Pomona and District Weather Warnings Director, Nathanael Ford, wrote to Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton, suggesting that flood gates be installed at Pinbarren Bridge on the Pomona-Kin Kin Road and Stratford Park Bridge on Louis Bazzo Drive.

Nathanael said that at the conclusion of flooding events, signage at these two bridges is often strewn into the ditch.

“This is a common occurrence, which often in the past, resulted in either SES or Queensland Police standing guard at the road closure points for days at a time.”

“In more recent times, contracted traffic controllers have performed this duty, usually only during daylight hours, and sometimes but not often on a 24-hour basis.”

Nathanael said considering public safety, he “implored” Sandy to arrange with Transport and Main Roads Queensland to have flood gates installed at either end of both bridges and the Pinbarren Bridge.

“The planned upgrade of Pinbarren Bridge should also be altered to include these flood gates. These flood gates should be installed in a manner that would prevent traffic from circumventing the gates’ purpose by driving around them.”

State MP Sandy Bolton said that the suggestion has been sent through to TMR. “Over the years we have had drivers who risk their lives, as well those who attempt to rescue them, when they disregard signage or barriers during floods.”

“The suggestion of flood gates or barriers has been sent through to TMR and we await their response.”

Sandy said in addition, after the February floods, in preparation for this year’s state budget, a request has been made for a cloud-based early flood alert system to facilitate quicker closing and reopening of bridges during floods.

“With the Six Mile Bridge #7 between Pomona and Pinbarren to be replaced this year with one 3 metres higher, there may be no need for flood gates there, as there would be for Louis Bazzo Drive.”

“To residents using these bridges and roads, whilst we know it is incredibly frustrating when the bridges are closed, removing signage to cross before they have been inspected and deemed safe could result in a tragedy.”

“Please remember, if it's flooded, forget it.”

Nathanael said that similar gates are already used in Morayfield and other locations around Queensland.

SIX new CCTV cameras in Cooroy’s Hinterland Adventure Playground are now operating.

The cameras cover all areas of the park during the day and after dark, with warning lights activated by motion detectors and a pre-recorded message played.

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Chris Bell, said that the message reminds intruders that they are trespassing and to exit the site immediately.

“The motion detectors detect people but not possums and activate warning lights and the pre-recorded warning.”

Chris said the cost to install the six new cameras, which are an extension of Cooroy’s existing CCTV network and feed directly back to the Cooroy Police Station, was in excess of $20,000.

“This was split 50/50 between Noosa Council and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chamber of Commerce also acknowledges and thanks Wythes Real Estate for their recent successful grant application that has contributed $1500 to the ongoing maintenance of the cameras.”

of Commerce, also raised an additional $1400 for the upkeep of the Chamber's existing CCTV network around town.

Chris said the event, held at Hinter Auctions’ new premises in Jarrah Street, raised much-needed funds for the ongoing maintenance of 31 strategically placed cameras, including three with automatic number plate recognition, in Cooroy’s CBD. “To make it happen, Richard Hansen from Hinter Auctions put out a call to local businesses to donate anything that he could put under the hammer.

The face behind Humans of the Hinterland THERE’S a new human interest and storytelling project taking the Hinterland by storm.

‘Humans of the Hinterland’ is a Facebook page run by local, Gemma Guest.

Gemma said she started the page after moving to the area and being ‘enamoured’ with the sense of community and the interesting people that have gravitated here.

“The idea of photographing the local characters of the Hinterland has been bouncing around in my head for a few years.”

“The area is like a mecca for the eccentric and creative but also for kind and generous people.”

“I moved here with a toddler and a newborn and was suffering from post-natal depression. I always like to say, Pomona saved me.

Walking into town each day, there was a real human connection, whether it was buying my coffee each day at SpillDeBeans or seeing the same familiar faces at the playground or the shop, the town embraced me.”

“And it's been my mission ever since to try to do the same to others.”

It wasn’t until January this year, when Gemma lost her

job, that she was able to actualise the ‘Humans of the Hinterland’ project.

“I needed a new passion and I needed to create something positive from my grief. And along the way, spending time with these amazing humans, I'm learning so much and it's helping me to heal.”

Gemma said that finding people for her stories comes from chatting to locals and being drawn to “interesting characters”.

“I'm a pretty open, friendly person when I'm out and about. I just love to have a bit of a yarn with people and am always drawn to interesting characters or people that present a little bit 'outside the box'.

“I love the human condition. I love real connections.

My biggest role models are those who give back to the community, and there are many of them here, quietly going about their business with very little recognition.

I have a few of them lined up to profile for the page hopefully soon.”

Gemma said the aim of the ‘Humans of the Hinterland’ page is to document the magic of the Hinterland by essentially “preserving” the

people of this area and their stories.

“I want to foster that amazing feeling of 'human connection', which has been difficult over the past few years. To inspire readers to follow their intuition and create a life that fulfils them, by seeing others doing the same thing. To tell 'real' stories, even if they're a bit messy or contain difficult emotions and topics... that's real life right?”

So, what’s Gemma’s story?

“I'm a lover of all things wild and wonderful, a jack of a few trades and a master of none. I have a history of working with people, unfinished science and nutrition degrees, a diploma of photography and horticulture qualifications. I spent many years volunteering my time to foster-based animal rescues and until recently lived and breathed the school kitchen garden program.

“I love living in the Hinterland and feel so blessed I have the opportunity to raise my children here. I wouldn't live anywhere else.”

BY GRAEME WILSON COOROY’S Katie Rose Cottage retail store aims to be the place where everybody knows your name.

Everyone working there makes a point of getting to know the many regulars, with some return visitors simply coming in to say hello.

In a recent changing of the guard, long-time store volunteer Monique Toner has taken over the retail manager’s role from the retiring Sheryl Hill, but that commitment to old-fashioned service remains unchanged.

A much-loved member of the Cooroy community, Sheryl worked at the store for five years and during that time, played a leading role in the continued success of both the store and the Katie Rose Cottage Hospice Charity it supports.

Monique said a key reason for stepping up as full-time manager was to maintain the core values Sheryl instilled.

“It’s always been so beautiful working in the shop and I didn’t want that to change.

“I actually took on the job because some of the volunteers have been here so long (many are now aged in their 70s) and I thought it was important that things

didn’t change too much.”

Like anyone taking on a new management role, Monique is keen to keep the store growing and evolving, but any changes will avoid breaking anything that doesn’t need fixing.

Teamwork plays a big part in the store’s operations, and one thing Monique has implemented since taking over at the end of January is to put volunteers in charge of different areas.

“As a team, we’re working on what changes we may make,” she said.

“Putting different people in charge of different areas gives them a bit of ownership. It’s definitely a team thing.”

Giving “old-fashioned service” is very important to everyone involved.

“We do things like helping people to the car with their purchases – we just pride ourselves on looking after our customers,” Monique said.

Like Sheryl before her, Monique is keen to acknowledge and embrace the magnificent support of the Cooroy community.

“We definitely have so much support from the community here. That’s just Cooroy.

“It makes it so lovely to work here, all the volunteers love working here. It’s

just a really nice atmosphere.”

Along with two other Katie Rose op shops and a furniture warehouse on the Sunshine Coast, proceeds from sales and donations at the Cooroy store go towards the running of the palliative care facility at Doonan.

Being associated with such a loving, compassionate service provided to the community at no cost (their gift to the community) brings joy to the hearts of the Cooroy team.

“It’s a lovely place with the most beautiful energy. They will take care of any need and they really look after the families,” Monique said.

Cooroy volunteer Denise O’Neill previously worked at the hospice said the families often showed their gratitude by making generous donations as they wanted to “give back” to the hospice for its loving care.

“One lady came in recently on the anniversary of her husband’s death and made a cash donation and she does that every year.”

Many of Katie Rose’s 300 volunteers across the Coast have had friends or family transition at the hospice.

“You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else when it’s your time – we all reckon we’re paying it forward,” Denise said.

Art exhibition to celebrate Refugee Week ARTWORKS by refugees will be on display at Sonder Studio Gallery in Cooroy to celebrate Refugee Week.

The free exhibition, titled “The Global Need for Healing”, will showcase artworks by refugees, who have been, or are still, living in refugee camps around the world.

Included in the exhibition is a giant message, made up of letters creatively decorated by over 30 community groups and individuals from across the Sunshine Coast, and coordinated by the Sunshine Coast Refugee Action Network.

Several groups attended a workshop in May at the Sonder Gallery to decorate letters and Sonder Founder, Gabby Sutherland, said that the great thing about this community project was how many different groups jumped on board.

“From schools to climate action groups, artists to multicultural groups, everyone was very enthusiastic and took this opportunity to find out more about refugees.”

All of the groups came together at Federation Park, Palmwoods, on 4 June, to spell out the giant message of welcome, which was captured on film.

“One of the aims of Refugee Week is to focus on how the community can provide a safe and welcoming environment for refugees. Recent events in Ukraine have brought home how people leading ordinary lives can become refugees overnight,” Gabby said.

Refugee Week, from 19 to 25 June, is Australia’s peak annual activity to inform the public about refugees and to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

New artists exhibit at the Art Hub

RESIDENT artists Karen Roberts, Kerry Keyte and Gemma Troy, are launching a new exhibition at the Art Hub Cooroy.

For Karen, creating enables her to share a part of her life’s journey in a spiritual and positive way. She uses a variety of media to bring the sculptures to life.

Acrylic paints and assorted media are the final components to bring everything together and give “life” to her sculptural pieces.

Working in mixed media gives Kerry the ability to adapt and change her artwork that is inspired by the light and ocean lifestyle

of the Sunshine Coast.

Her art has a reflective quality achieved through using light to bring up the colour and intensity in her artwork. She mainly works with resin, mosaic wood, surfboards and fused glass, thereby up-cycling old objects into works of art.

Gemma is a creative soul who loves to write poetry, paint and make ceramic fairies. She grew up fossicking in ferntree gullies, deep in the Australian bush with her dad. This is where her imagination and her creativity were born. Gemma always pours her heart

Lots to do and see in Pomona for KOM weekend THE King of the Mountain event is on in Pomona on Sunday 24 July.

Every year the event draws hundreds of spectators to Pomona for the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge and Zinc 96 Prince & Princess Race.

This year, other attractions include a classic car display, animal farm, bike ride, live music, Art in the Paddock and Antiques and Collectables Fair.

The bike ride, sponsored

by Venture Cycles, is fun for the entire family and friends who enjoy mountain biking through the beautiful Noosa Trails. Registration will commence at 8 am starting at Pomona State School at the bottom gate entrance. Entry costs $10 for adults and $5 for juniors (16 and under) for $20 for a family (up to five people max). Entry Fees are to be paid on the day

at the time of registration.

Categories include beginners/novice, intermediate, and advanced. E bikes are welcome in any category.

The ride will be on the Noosa Trail and Yurol Forestry, starting at 9 am and participants must have a reliable mountain bike, closed in shoes, helmet and water. Groups will be led by experienced riders. Everyone rides to their own level of skill and experience.

Where: Kandanga

THE Rescue Ark is travelling around Australia helping endangered animals and will dock at Kandanga in July for the annual Mary River Festival.

Watch the koalas, mary river turtles, spot-tailed quoll and many more threatened animals from the Mary River catchment make their way onto the Ark at the 2022 Mary River Festival on 16 July.

The idea, based on the picture book, The Rescue Ark, taps into the increasing awareness about our endangered animals by young children and their parents.

Festival-goers can have fun tracing the Ark’s journey around the Mary River Catchment and treasure hunting clues about the animals before joining in the parade to help the animals onto the Ark by singing or acting out the rhymes wearing a costume, mask or cardboard cutout of their favourite endangered animal or plant.

Schools are being invited to join in the fun with more details soon to be released on the Mary River Festival website.

After a wet start to the year and three floods in the Mary

River catchment, organsers of this year’s Mary River Festival have chosen the theme, “Floods regenerate the Earth and the Sea”, and looks at the challenges and positives of flooding.

Despite the adversity, floods seem to bring forth community resilience, and that has to be worth celebrating. The significance of the Rescue Ark, a feature of this year’s festival, is a boat many may recognise from a certain dam campaign will be loaded with threatened species.

NOOSA’S palliative care facility, Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, will host its inaugural fundraising gala on 18 June at fine-dining restaurant, Alba Noosa.

The event aims to raise money to help with the costs of running the facility.

The new Head of Fundraising and Partnerships, Leigh McCready, said that State Government funding only covers 20 percent of Katie Rose’s operational expenses.

“The 80 percent gap is covered by wonderful Noosa and broader Sunshine Coast community members, who recognise that having Katie Rose Cottage makes us a better, stronger, and more caring place in which to live.

“Katie Rose Cottage Hos-

pice is a wonderful local organisation that provides loving, professional care for those at the end of their lives. Katie Rose provides an important service that has helped over 230 people to die tranquilly, surrounded by loved ones, in their ‘home away from home’.

“Not everyone knows that our palliative care service is provided at no cost to the guests and families who stay with us. This is the right model for the type of care that we give. However it means that we rely on the generosity and support of our local businesses and community to deliver our service.”

Many local organisations have come on board already to support the Gala, including Bruff Painting and

THE Annual Mary Valley Art Festival is being held from 21 to 24 July in Imbil.

Run by the art organisation, Mary Valley Artslink, the Festival showcases local artists like Imbil’s abstract artist, Pat Cale.

Pat has attained international recognition with her work featuring in collections in Australia and overseas.

She is also a regular competitor at the Mary Valley Art Festival.

Mary Valley Artslink President, Heinke Butt, said that Pat is among the elite artists attracted to the annual festival, which this year offers more than $10,000 in prizes.

“We are very lucky to have her reside in the Mary Valley.

She is a valued member of Mary Valley Artslink, as a mentor, previous judge and participant.”

Pat has been instrumental in sharing her deep understanding of life drawing with participants at regular life drawing sessions hosted by Mary Valley Artslink in Imbil.

Pat said she has been an artist all her life and her work is a message of shared experience.

“If a piece can make a viewer look with deeper understanding, then I would call that successful. Humanity is very much part of my view of the landscape. I do teach but

COOKING is the new ‘learning by doing’ for Cooroy Scouts after their den on Mary River Road was renovated and a new kitchen installed.

Scout Leader, Simon Southern, said that the new kitchen has opened up the Scout Den to provide a more practical area, particularly on wet nights when indoor activities are required.

“It is all thanks to the generous donations from the Cooroy Rag and the Cooroy RSL that we were able to renovate the Den and install a new kitchen.”

“As well as those generous donations, the kitchen would not have come to fruition without a huge effort from Joey Scout Leader, Charles Beckett, who gave up his time to rip out the old benches and cabinets and install the new kitchen.”

The Scout Association, established over 100 years ago, is one of Australia’s largest Youth Organisations. Its fundamental

aim is to encourage and promote the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens in their local, national and international communities.

From the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub-Branch THURSDAY 18 August 2022 is Vietnam Veterans Day and the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch is holding a memorial service at 11am at the Cenotaph on Diamond Street in Cooroy.

Light refreshments will be available afterwards at the RSL Club in Maple Street.

Many in the local community may not be aware of the support that the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch provides to the community and of the activities that it supports apart from organising Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, Vietnam Veterans Day and other special days.

The Branch’s involvement includes a welfare group that monitors all members and families. This includes a transport team that takes members, widows and families for medical, dental and other health and pharmacy appointments, as well as for shopping and other needs.

like-minded people who understand service experience and the meaning of mateship. It is about being there for each other, listening and understanding when to provide support or a helping hand.

Activities vary from time to time, depending on how many active members can assist.

However, it may include engaging with community groups to keep the memory alive of those who have served, assisting the needy or disadvantaged in the community, connecting with lonely or ill Veterans or encouraging those who are still struggling with civilian life to take the next positive step and supporting the community.

A few of the emergency services and local community organisations to whom the Cooroy-Pomona RSL SubBranch provides donations are local fire brigades, Smartpups, Light Horse, Noosa Pipe Band, Pomona Meals on Wheels, 128 Cadets and Cooroy SES. Any current Queensland

resident who has served with, supported or was otherwise engaged with the Australian Defence Force or the Armed Forces or its allies for a minimum of six months is able to apply for a Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub-Branch Service Membership.

The annual membership is $5.50 and is free for all currently serving ADF personnel.

Ongoing active membership is crucial to enable the SubBranch to continue to provide the support outlined above.

If you would like to meet with the Sub-Branch Executive Members, they are available in the RSL from 10 am to 12 pm on Mondays. For enquiries about membership or the Garden of Remembrance, SubBranch Members are available from 1-5 pm on Wednesdays.

There are also raffles on Thursday nights and Meet A Member Social Afternoons from 4-6 pm on Fridays.

your say Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor WORK to replace the existing Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge in Cooroy is starting in early July 2022.

Work is expected to be completed by mid-October with weather and construction conditions permitting.

The current two-lane timber bridge will be demolished, and a two-lane concrete bridge will be built in the same location. The new bridge will have a design life of 100 years and will require less maintenance than the existing bridge, which has been identified as needing replacement due to its age and condition. This new bridge is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Noosa Council.

The Black Mountain Road landslide has been described by technical experts as one of the largest and most complex that the Sunshine Coast region has seen in 20 years. Extensive geotechnical analysis and testing shows that the failure of the surface and resulting landslide is greater than 100 metres wide, with a movement depth of about 15 metres. A complex detailed design and specialist contractors will be required to fully repair the landslide. Council has been busy establishing the site for geotechnical engineering surveys, including the gravel

track on the top side of the landslide to allow machinery access. We have also upgraded the road surface on Black Mountain Road from the landslide to the Andersons Road entry/exit, and have built a temporary crossing at Andersons Road to improve entry/exits during a flooding event.

We’re continuing to communicate with key stakeholders such as emergency services, utility companies and waste services about potential improvements as the situation allows. Council is also considering the option of a phased approach to rebuild the damaged area, and we are hoping this could start as early as July 2022, with weather permitting. Given the complex nature of the work, a phased approach will allow Council to provide access for residents to the entire length of Black Mountain Road as quickly as possible.

Good news for Kin Kin residents with the refurbishment of their Rec Hall being completed. I had the privilege of officially opening it on 5 June 2022 as part of the Pink Ribbon Cricket Match. The renovations of this much loved community asset are terrific and now the hall can be well and truly enjoyed by all.

one who took the time to have a say about the Noosa Council 2022/2023 Budget, both online and at the Library Q and A sessions. The draft budget was shaped on the detailed Liveability Survey conducted late last year, to which more than 1600 people responded However the feedback from our community over the past weeks will assist Council in their final budget deliberations.

Hence we are very grateful for all those who took the time to provide us with their thoughts and comments.

We’ve welcomed Greenfleet, the Kabi Kabi People’s Aboriginal Corporation and Noosa and District Landcare to the Yurol-Ringtail Conservation Project. The next phase of the project will see 2400 hectares of former plantation land revegetated, and the restored habitat progressively added to the national park. This is great news.

Finally, with the latest severe weather event, it’s a timely reminder for residents to familiarise themselves with Council’s Disaster Dashboard, which provides up-to-date information on weather warnings, road closures and power outages.

More than 100 gymnasts from eight clubs attended the event at Woombye and after a few nerves, which lead to some falls on the beam and bars, there were lots of smiles and medals, with the highlights being a clean sweep of the podium in the Level 4 Open All Around, Second All Around in Level 5 Open and First, Second and Fourth in the Level 3 Under All Around podium.

This year, the club is boasting its largest WAG

competitive team in over 10 years and this event was also the first with new Head Coach, Jamie Cannon.

Coach Jamie said that he is working to build confidence and resilience in the gymnasts, focusing on foundations and intrinsic motivation.

“The girls are pushing themselves, wanting to build strength and learn new skills, which is great from a coaching point of view,” said Jamie.

Rugging your horse WHY rug? To protect your horse against the weather conditions, to maintain body condition, reduce feeding cost (cold weather will affect a horse’s metabolism, requiring them to use more energy to keep warm) and for cleanliness.

When it comes to sizing, measure from the centre of the horse’s chest, around the shoulder, along the side of the horse to the furthest point of the rump. Make sure not to measure around to the tail as this will add extra inches. Use an imperial tape measure, as this is the measurement by which horse rugs are sold.

The rug should sit forward and in front of the wither. It

should fit firmly around the neckline and chest. You should be able to slide your hand between the neckline and the rug, making sure it isn’t too tight. The front buckles should fasten nicely together, so if you are on the last hole, you will need a bigger rug. The belly straps/ surcingle straps should be adjusted so that they allow a hand’s width between the straps and belly.

The leg straps should be loose enough to sit off the leg to prevent chafing but not hanging too low. Crossing the leg straps helps to keep the rug from slipping to one side or another.

The seam where the tail flap attaches to the rug

should sit on top of the tail.

If it sits beyond the tail, the rug is too big. If it sits in front of the tail, it is too small.

It is very important to make sure that your horse is comfortable in whatever rug type, style and material you choose.

Do not leave heavy hot rugs on your horse. Not only is this very uncomfortable for your horse but horses are more likely to roll, rub and ruin the rug if they are feeling hot, sweaty and itchy.

Maple Street Surgery Heart Health Initiative JUNE is Heart Health Month at Maple Street Surgery. The initiative was inspired by the tragic death of cricketing legend Shane Warne, who passed away at age 52 from a heart attack soon after experiencing chest pains.

Home baked goodies sold out quickly as Year 5 students did their bit to support fundraising efforts for ALWS.

POMONA is home to a special sporting club affectionately known as the Pomona Demons.

The Club prides itself on its family-friendly and welcoming environment and unwavering commitment to Junior footy.

And this month, the Club is holding a sign on day on 12 February at the Pomona AFL grounds.

The Demons have big aspirations for the 2022 season with competitive teams registered across all age groups (U6-U14) including Under 15 Girls.

If you are new to the area or you always wanted to play AFL then please come and meet the Club.

The Club has produced talented young players for the past 20 years. Just recently, several players representing Noosa District in U12 and U14 and three of our U14 girls made the Brisbane Lions Academy.

The oval is located at the foot of Cooroora Mountain and is arguably the most idyllic oval in Queensland, if not Australia.

The Club was born in 1973 where its first home was the Pomona Show Grounds oval.

However, in 1977 the Club moved to the current site on Reserve Road, repurposing the Pomona School’s domestic science building as a clubhouse.

The Club survives and thrives through the determined attitude of our Players and Committee, the passionate and never-saydie culture in the club; and for the inherent love of ‘the game’. Club President, Matthew Conquest is all these things and friendliest guy you will ever meet to boot.

The Demons are a small club that needs community support, whether that be in the form of new players, volunteers, supporters or financial sponsorship so grab at coffee at the Pomona Markets and pop down to say ‘Hi’. You can even try out the stationary hot air balloon!

The Kindness Club rocks

THE children of the Kindness Club have teamed up with their friends at Cooroy Outside School Hours Care to bring back Cooroy Kindness Rocks.

Bright colours and kind words are painted onto the rocks with the hope of bringing joy to others.

with Sirah Robb, Director and Principal of Wythes Real Estate IN Queensland, median house prices rose by 3.23% in the first quarter of this year and the state’s strongest performer was the Noosa local government area, with a whopping 15.38% quarterly rise to

$1.5m, according to figures released by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

Commenting on the figures, REIQ Chief Executive, Antonia Mercorella said, “The first quarter of 2022 has been fraught with disruptions such as COVID-19 outbreaks, the flooding disaster, the string of long weekends including the standstill of Easter, the looming Federal Election, and signs pointing to an interest rate rise, with some banks adjusting early in

anticipation.”

While this caused some buyers to “hit pause”, Ms Mercorella highlights, “I’m sure the median prices reached this quarter will take some of us by surprise,” noting that Queensland is currently positioned for further growth.

“The latest quarterly data tells us the Sunshine State market is still a rising star,” Ms Mercorella said.

“We recognise that at some stage the rate of growth we see in Queensland will start to

level and stabilise, simply because it would be difficult to sustain this level of accelerated growth – but for now, there’s still plenty of wind in the sails of Queensland’s property market,” she stated.

Anecdotally, we are seeing healthy numbers through open homes in our local Noosa Hinterland market.

Demand continues to outweigh supply and although our rate of price growth is expected to stabilise month to month, we experienced 16% growth in our first

quarter average sale price, lifting to $1.06m.

We are on track to having a stronger second quarter than the first for inspection numbers, new homes coming to the market and average sale price.
