Governments join forces on Cooroy’s railway bridge BY ALEX PURCELL LOCAL government has joined the state government in advocating for a major upgrade of Cooroy’s railway overpass. Noosa Council has requested a meeting with Queensland’s transport minister to raise the local community's concerns about the state of the rail-

way bridge. Noosa mayor Clare Stewart said she has written to Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish seeking improvements to the bridge and a meeting to discuss residents' concerns in detail. “Councillors regularly receive phone calls and emails from residents worried about the condi-

tion of the state-controlled thoroughfare. "We know it's an issue for our community, and while we were hopeful the recent repairs – carried out by the state with overnight lane closures – would improve the road, unfortunately the potholes are already opening back up.” Following months of community feedback along

with consistent lobbying to Transport and Main Roads (TMR) by Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton and Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, pavement repairs on the bridge were carried out in December. Nicklin MP Rob Skelton said TMR completed maintenance works on the bridge; however it does not meet the community’s

expectations. “I support calls from residents who are asking for this bridge to be upgraded. “I have spoken to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services and asked him to visit the Cooroy community to inspect the condition of the bridge. “I will update the community once the inspection has

taken place.” Cr Stewart said council believes it is crucial that the state thoroughly review the overall condition of the bridge, including its road surface and the anticipated timeline for a new bridge to be built. “Council also holds safety and functionality concerns for the Myall Street/Elm Continued page 8

WHEN Judy Painter asked me to help restart the Cooroy Rag after COVID, I had no idea it would be the beginning of a four-year love affair. During that time, not only did we grow your community paper into the fabulous local print Alex Purcell, Cooroy Rag Editor product it is today, but we broke news, uncovered a historical secret, advocated and installed a much-needed memorial for four people killed in Cooroy in 1981, were nominated for a philanthropic award, and became a trusted voice for the community – reflecting its views, championing its causes, celebrating its people and sustaining its way of life. I have been honoured to work alongside some talented people, get to know our passionate business owners, and meet many of our wonderful readers. I’ve interviewed influential people and everyday people – all of whose opinions are relevant to our community. I’ve stayed with our original motto “a good news newspaper” and never shown bias; this is your newspaper, Cooroy, and thanks to Judy, it always will be. Born and raised in Cooroy, and after working many years as a journalist with an international mass media company, to be able to live in Pomona and take up the position of editor of the Rag, writing hyper-local community news for the newspaper I grew up reading, has been a real pleasure. Therefore it pains me to say goodbye, but the time has come for me to pursue new opportunities that I have been offered. But it's not goodbye forever; I will be staying in the area I grew up in, live in and love, so if you see me, please say hello. I’d like to sincerely thank you all for your support over the years and look forward to bringing you the next few editions before I move on in April.

Work begins on Lake Macdonald Dam upgrade EARLY works on the Lake Macdonald (Six Mile Creek) Dam improvement project have begun, following the recent completion of the final design concept. Seqwater has released the concept for the upgrade of the dam, which includes a new split-level concrete spillway to increase the dam’s capacity to withstand extreme weather events and maintain water security. This upgrade will enhance water security and enable the dam to withstand a 1-in500,000-year flood event. Seqwater CEO Neil Brennan said while Lake Macdonald Dam continues to operate safely, the upgrade will ensure the dam meets updated engineering and safety standards, taking into account extremely rare weather scenarios and climate change. Following a comprehensive technical review undertaken in 2021 and 2022, the new optimised design will increase the dam’s capacity to withstand extreme weather events while also ensuring

the dam remains operational during construction for water security and some recreation activities. “The revised design will allow water to be retained in Lake Macdonald during construction, some recreation activities to remain open, reduced impact on aquatic life, plants and animals in and around the lake, and will ensure the Noosa Water Treatment Plant continues to operate for local water supply,” Mr Brennan said. The lake will be temporarily lowered for construction work to occur safely, and a temporary cofferdam will be installed to support water security during construction. The Noosa Water Treatment Plant will continue to operate during construction. Due to the significant nature of the project, some recreational use of the lake and surrounding areas will be disrupted during construction; however, recreation activities at Lake Macdonald, Lake Macdonald Park and the Noosa Botanic Gardens will remain open.

“Projects of this scale are complex and require significant planning time and we thank the community for their understanding while we undertook this important work,” Mr Brennan said. Survey works are underway on-site, with site establishment and lake lowering occurring over the coming months. Major work to construct the temporary cofferdam is expected to commence in mid-2024, following contractor appointment. Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said the upgrade is also set to boost local employment opportunities in the region, with around 150 jobs expected to be created over the life of the project. The dam improvement project involves building a new split-level concrete spillway and upper labyrinth and reconstructing the existing earth embankments. This will be the first major upgrade of Lake Macdonald Dam since its original construction in 1965. Member for Noosa Sandy

Lake Macdonald (Six Mile Creek) Dam spillway and the final design concept for the dam upgrade.

Bolton said it is vitally important that the dam wall is upgraded to improve safety for nearby residents and enable greater resilience during flood-related events. “Thank you to the Se-

qwater team for their work and all Lake Macdonald residents for their ongoing patience during the planning and construction phases.” Seqwater will keep the community informed

throughout the project and hold information sessions in February and March. The project team will be available to discuss the design and construction approach and answer any questions.

OUR TEAM OF HIGHLY Cooroy Community Bowls Club committee member Michael Loe pointing to where the bell was stolen from and the note with the returned bell.

MEMBERS of the Cooroy Community Bowls Club are thrilled a treasured historic item, stolen in October last year, has been returned. A brass bell, believed to be from the old Black Mountain school, was ripped from the wall of the club’s premises in Opal Street. Cooroy Community Bowls Club committee member Michael Loe said the bell was left in a box with a note at Your Mates BowlsPub sometime in the new year. “It was all very clandestine. “The bell was delivered to Your Mates at some stage during the night and then they called us to let us know.” The note left with the bell (pictured) reads: “Dear Bowls Club Com-

munity, “I am sincerely sorry for returning this beautiful bell so late. A drunk man had it on a bus tour and I didn’t know where it had come from. “It was only after my auntie [sic] sent me a Cooroy Community Board post that we found the rightful owners. “I am so sorry for the delay still as we don’t live close by. “But now, this bell has had a wee adventure treat her well. She’s home now … “Happy New Year, Angel xoxo.” Mr Loe said they are assuming the theft coincided with a festival that visited Your Mates BowlsPub. “The bell went missing when this festival visited

the club so we’re assuming whoever took the bell was part of the festival.” Mr Loe said the bell, which has been with the club since its inception, is one of their treasures. “We are really pleased to have it back where it belongs.” The bell will be restored to its place on the wall in a couple of months. “We purchased another bell in the interim that’s currently on the wall but our greens are about to be renovated, putting the bowls club out of action for five to six weeks. “The bell is in storage in a safe place until the renovations are finished and it can be put back where it belongs.”

Flooding repairs for Black Pinch Road FLOOD damage on Black Pinch Road, Cootharaba, is being repaired. The 2022 flooding event caused extensive damage to the road formations and embankments at five separate locations. Reconstruction of the five sites will include excavation and disposal of damaged and unsuitable material, earthworks, and bank stabilisation including piling, stormwater drainage and pavement works. Construction will start in early February and will be completed in early September, weather and construction conditions permitting. The flood recovery effort for Noosa Council is jointly funded by the Commonwealth–State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

NOOSA Council is asking residents to provide feedback on a new car park technology trialled during the holidays. Digital boards with real-time parking information were displayed on the way towards Noosa's Main Beach precinct. Noosa Council's Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, Shaun Walsh, said the boards displayed real-time availability of parking spaces in the Lions Park paid and unpaid car park, the Maze car park (between Hastings Street and the bus stop), the Surf Club car park, the Woods/Spit and Noosa National Park. “We really want to hear how the digital boards influenced the parking decisions of those travelling to the Main Beach precinct during the school holidays. Did

they notice the boards? how effective were they? – so we encourage residents to please let us know through the online survey.” Mr Walsh said the technology trial is a critical part of council's Go Noosa program. “This is another piece in

looking how we get people around Noosa during peak times, including providing better information, satellite parking and free buses to assist managing congestion,” Mr Walsh said. The survey can be completed at: https://bit. ly/3vD5qJP

Prestigious medal for retired captain

Pomona’s Paul Mardon has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM).

POMONA’S Paul Mardon has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in the 2024 Australia Day Honours. The AFSM recognises distinguished service by a member of an Australian fire service. Mr Mardon said it was unexpected. “It never popped up on my radar; I never considered I’d be nominated for this award. “I’ve been fortunate to work with dedicated and talented people throughout my career and it is humbling to be nominated by my peers for this prestigious award. It is an honour to receive it,” Mr Mardon said. Mr Mardon was with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) for 18 years – six of those as captain and officer in charge of Pomona QFES Fire & Rescue Station – and retired late last year.

Busstop Espresso presents petition to council COOROY home-based coffee shop Busstop Espresso has presented a petition with over 3,000 signatures to Noosa Council. Busstop Espresso spokesperson Mike Dayton said there were two petitions: one online and a physical one on the bus. “The online change.org petition had 2,687 signatures and the petition book in the bus had 320 signatures. “We presented a final petition to council containing all 3,007 signatures, a chart analysing the geographic make-up of signatories by postcode, and signatories’ comments. “The graph shows Busstop Espresso has overwhelming Noosa resident support and has substantial value as a tourist destination. “The amazing response to the petitions strongly

demonstrates the will of the greater community. The Noosa Plan 2020 is important but it is just that – a plan. It is not a cap and there are always exceptions,” Mr Dayton said. Noosa Council CEO Larry Sengstock accepted the petition at the Thursday 18 January ordinary meeting. Director of Development and Regulation, Richard MacGillivray, said the applicant had not filed an appeal within the required appeal period, and as outlined in the council resolution last year, the applicant must cease trading of the cafe in mid-February. “Council staff have worked with the owners exploring suitable alternative sites where they can continue to grow their cafe business and concept. “We have offered support

and advice to the owners, as we acknowledge the strong community connection the applicant has created with the operation since COVID. “Ultimately the decision to relocate rests with the operator,” he said. Mr Dayton said they lodged a formal complaint to council under the administrative actions provision. A meeting on this matter was held with CEO Larry Sengstock on Monday 29 January. “The meeting was not conclusive. We have followed up with a summary and points discussed.” Mr MacGillivray said while it may be an unpopular decision, council has a consistent approach to adhering to its existing regulations in the Planning Scheme.

COOROY’S Eco Cottages managing director, Greg Phipps, has passed away. The company shared the heartbreaking news late last month. “It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of our managing director, Greg Phipps. “Greg passed late last year after a long battle with MND [motor neurone disease]. We delayed posting this news out of respect for his family. “The condolences have come from far and wide – a

hallmark of the impact Greg had on those who knew him and the industry he dedicated his life to. We thank you sincerely for all the love and support we have received. “Greg's passion for cypress was powered by his love of community. Like no other, Greg’s authentic, selfless drive for a regenerative future, affordable housing and encouraging cypress back into the construction industry in Australia. A humble man with an expansive vision. “Whilst the void that Greg's

passing leaves is impossible to fill for Eco Cottages, we are endeavouring to source new management. We are currently doing everything we can to carry on his legacy in some way, shape or form. “But our gratitude for his life’s work is immense and the ripples of his inspiration are unimaginable.” At the Cooroy Rag, we had the pleasure of working with Greg on several stories. We were sad to learn of his passing. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Governments join forces on Cooroy’s railway overpass Continued from page 1 Street intersection and the Diamond Street/Elm Street intersection. “The condition of the bridge and both of these intersections are of great concern to our community, and I speak for all of my fellow councillors when I call for this urgent meeting with the minister.”

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said it is good to see Noosa Council joining her advocacy, and that of Mr Skelton’s, regarding the bridge and intersections. “As we have requested, it is important that TMR re-engages with the community, including on options for those intersections, and allocates funding for a

solution to the long-standing issues emanating from both.” Mr Skelton launched a petition in November calling on TMR to restart community consultations over the intersections in Cooroy. TMR was contacted for comment but did not provide a response.

Coffee cart a fresh brew for Pomona couple

A YOUNG Pomona couple looking for a unique business opportunity have bought a portable coffee trailer and set up on Factory Street. Charlotte Duncan, 21, and her partner purchased the trailer as a registered business, Spill The Beans Coffee, from Hervey Bay. Charlotte said they acknowledge that there is a business with a similar trading name in Pomona, but it was never intentional. “It just came as a package

taken a permanent spot for now and are renting space off the laundromat. “It’s a good spot because it is an opportunity to supply coffee to people and businesses on the other side of Pomona. “It’s also a great place for vehicles with trailers to pull over so we provide coffee to all the morning tradies.” Charlotte, who has grown up on the Sunshine Coast, and her partner, who has a carpentry business servicing Pomona and surrounds,

It's pretty difficult to get done.” Spill The Beans Coffee cart is located beside the laundromat on Factory Street. Charlotte said it wasn’t their plan to set up permanently. “We were hoping to be mobile full-time but council made it hard to gain a permit to do that. There were lots of restrictions on where we could stop. So we have

Songwriters in the Round What’s On

What: Songwriters in the Round When: Saturday 24 February Where: Pomona Memorial School of Arts hall, Reserve Street, Pomona Tickets: events.humanitix.com/songwritersin-the-round

Songwriters in the Round will be hosted by award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Alan Kelly.

THE Pomona Music Collective is inviting music lovers to join them for 'Songwriters in the Round', an evening of songs and stories. This fantastic night of live music will showcase a lineup of wonderful local talent, with the songwriters round being hosted by award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Alan Kelly. The Dublin-born folk performer, who now calls the Sunshine Coast home, will be joined onstage by musicians Clare Quinn, TobiAs and Lilliahna Rogers, for an intimate performance of original songs and followed by a toe-tapping concert by Celtic band the Barleyshakes trio. Fronted by Kelly, the Barleyshakes are adored throughout Australia and

beyond for their 'bent' Irish sound, and their trio formation is no exception, delivering their lively dance tunes and haunting Celtic ballads. The opening songwriters round is a special experience for the artists and audience alike to engage with the songwriting process and hear from each artist as they share their experiences and the stories behind their songs. Held in the Pomona Memorial School of Arts hall, the event is supported by the Pomona and District Community House with funding from the Regional Arts Fund through Queensland's Flying Arts Alliance. Organised by the Pomona Music Collective, the event aims to develop audiences and broaden community engagement with the arts at the same time as contributing to cultivating a thriving arts culture in Pomona and the surrounding district. This project was made possible by the Australian Government's Regional Arts Fund, provided through Regional Arts Australia, administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance.

Visitors flock to studios for art event Cooroy Heritage & Field Day

OVER ten days in October 2023, around 103 artists across the region received approximately 16,000 visitations for the annual Noosa Open Studios. Noosa Open Studios 2023 president Simone Leao said most of the visitors came from Noosa Shire (42 per cent), Sunshine Coast (30 per cent), and Brisbane (15 per cent). “There has been a growth in the proportion of inter-

state visitors, from four per cent in 2022 to eight per cent in 2023. Two per cent of visitors were from overseas. “Moreover, 33 per cent of the visitors were attending the event for the first time.” Simone said the event generated a total of $450,000 in art sales across all studios, with 71 per cent of the visitors taking some artwork home, and 51 per cent stating they

would purchase art from Noosa Open Studios artists in the future. “Thirty-eight per cent of the artists got commissions during the event and the event also activated the local economy, with 27 per cent of the visitors staying in hotels in Noosa, 16 per cent had day-trips, and 76 per cent of the visitors combined their road trips to art studios with visits to cafes, restaurants, and other

local entertainment venues across the region. “It is estimated that Noosa Open Studios catalysed over $1 million in expenditure across local businesses.” Simone said last year, 28 new artists showed their studios for the first time, together with 75 previous artists exhibiting their latest artwork. “Participating artists highly rated the event in 2023, with the majority stating they would participate again in 2024 and 100 per cent of the visitors would recommend Noosa Open Studios for others to attend. Both artists and visitors provided great feedback and suggestions for future improvement. “Being an annual event for almost a decade, Noosa Open Studios experiences renewal and novelties every year. “We are very thankful to the participating artists, partners and sponsors, members and volunteers, the local and regional community, and visitors from further away. You all make this event possible. “A new committee to plan and manage the next event in 2024 is being formed.” Noosa Open Studios 2024 will be held from 4 to 14 October.

THE Combined Coastal Car Club is hosting a Heritage and Field Day on the weekend of 16/17 March. Following an overwhelming response to the inaugural event in March 2023, the club is organising a bigger and hopefully better event this year. The focus is the heritage of the Cooroy area and surrounds: dairy farming, small cropping, timber milling and, most importantly, the businesses and families who lived and worked in those areas. The Cooroy Horse & Pony Club building was once a co-op drop-off and pick-up point for local small-crop producers.

Noosa Council, Noosa Museum, Cooroy RSL, Cooroy Noosa Genealogy Group, stationary engine clubs, historic truck clubs, and the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade will have displays on the day. The Cooroy Horse & Pony Club will run a raffle to raise money for the club. The Tewantin Noosa Lions Club will provide food, there will be a coffee van, and car club members will also be cooking damper in camp ovens and making billy tea. The event, in Johnson Park at 17 Mary River Road, Cooroy, will be open to the public from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Living with wildlife forum

World Day of Prayer Cooroy

A regular urban visitor and a tawny frogmouth. Photos: BAAM Ecology.

AT the first Noosa Parks Association’s (NPA) Friday Environment Forum for 2024 on 9 February, Adrian Caneris will take participants on a journey around Queensland to look at the good, the bad, the ugly and uniquely Queensland wildlife and Queensland lifestyle and how we inevitably interact with wildlife. From joyous encounters to just plain annoying critters, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Brisbane backyard,

there is always something beautiful, strange, scary or just outright pesky; our wildlife is lurking everywhere we go. Adrian is engaged regularly to undertake ecological monitoring, wildlife management, biodiversity planning, feral species management, and community liaison and facilitation. He has been involved in research, management, consulting, tertiary teaching and community-based stud-

ies of terrestrial ecology for over 35 years. His expertise is often called upon for matters before the Queensland Planning and Environment or Land Courts. When Adrian presents, no one knows what stories will be told, including Adrian. His presentations invite interactive discussions so that the audience gets answers about the various species specific to their interests or concerns.

One thing is certain: participants will be left smiling and a bit wiser about our wildlife, whilst laughing about our uniquely Queensland lifestyles. Then on 23 February, protecting nature reserves from encroachment is the topic of the second NPA’s Friday Environment Forum. Hear how guest speaker Jude Tulloch, past president of the Marcus Beach Bushcare Association, led a push

THE World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative. It is run under the motto “Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action”, and is celebrated annually in over 170 countries on the first Friday in March. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common Day of Prayer, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year. The World Day of Prayer has been held at the different churches in Cooroy

since 1975, and this year the event is being hosted by the local Catholic Church. An invitation is extended to everyone in the hinterland communities to participate in this time of prayer and fellowship at 10 am on Friday 1 March at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 63 Maple Street, Cooroy, followed by morning tea at the nearby Uniting Church Hall. Further information is available at worlddayofprayeraustralia.org or contact Pat Shore (leave a message) on 0473 390 792.

for the protection of nature reserves in the eastern beaches. In response, Councillor Brian Stockwell will speak of the push to have a zero-tolerance clause on encroachments written into council planning documents and how the Noosa councillors agreed to provide the funding required to develop an on-the-ground program to tackle encroachments. Everyone is welcome at

the Friday Environment Forums at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The forum starts at 10:30 am. Morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Admission is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door and morning tea/coffee is included. Join the bird observers at 8:30 am in the car park for interpretive birding. For more information visit noosaparks.org.au.

VOTE NICK HLUSZKO 2024 EXPERIENCED LEADER. POSITIVE DIFFERENCE. Dear residents of Noosa Shire, I am standing for Mayor because I am devoted to and want to protect ‘our' Noosa. I am a seasoned executive and deeply involved community leader who has the experience, qualifications, passion, and energy to lead and guide our community in the face of significant challenges and opportunities facing Noosa today. We are not the Gold Coast and should never be, but we do need to be realistic about growth pressures. Many have never seen the community so divided before. Public trust in Council is low and I, like many, have become disillusioned with how it is run. It’s time to stop dividing the community and to unite it.

There is a growing perception that this Council is a “Boys Club” that do not represent nor listen to all sections of the community and is perceived as anti-business. This council has failed to address the major problems of infrastructure. We keep talking about traffic, parking, roads, etc but never do anything. Residents’ money has been wasted on low priority projects. The policy of doing nothing in the hope that people will not come, has failed. To get us through this and to build a sustainable and prosperous future for all of Noosa’s communities and regions, we need proven leadership with the right priorities. Learn more about my campaign via www.nickfornoosamayor.com

ADVERTISMENT Authorised by: Nick Hluszko, 180 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. 4566

BETTER MANAGEMENT An efficient, well-managed Council controlling costs and imposing only the very minimum rates and levies (at a time when far too many are struggling with the cost of living and interest rate rises). A FAIR AND EQUITABLE NOOSA RIVER STRATEGY Let’s work with the state and access the benefits of collaboration and funding to deliver a Noosa River and Catchment Plan that has defined goals, budgets, timeframes, and accountability to the community. A PLAN FOR INFRASTRUCTURE While I oppose the State Government’s 18,000 additional residents, we need to be realistic - and plan for the impact that growth will have on infrastructure needs. STRONG LEADERSHIP A positive, can-do Council culture, that accurately plans for future needs, fosters transparency and communication, with defined goals to deliver cost-effective, accountable results. Letter to the editor Dear Editor, Nominees for the upcoming council election should divest themselves of all memberships of local or federal groups which, if they are elected, would give them a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest in council will prevent them from taking full part in certain discussions and/or decisions during council meetings, because they would be asked to leave the room. Making a public declaration of

their membership is not sufficient to satisfy likely undue influence upon any matter of council funding or of council decision-making. Voters for candidates at the council election will need to be assured by the candidates that they hold no vested interests or ownerships which would deprive them from taking full part in all council business if elected to council. PTSD Dogs Australia is putting out the call to local dog lovers to come forward to foster their assistance dogs. The dogs are being trained to support veterans and triple-zero first responders who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD Dogs Australia founder and CEO Angie Weeks said they have had amazing success helping PTSD sufferers find relief and support through the company of trained assistance dogs. However at the moment, they can’t find enough foster homes to keep up with the demand. “The need for assistance dogs is immense. The number of ex-service personnel who have dutifully served our community, who are suffering from PTSD, is enormous, and unfortunately,

we can’t train the dogs quickly enough to keep up with demand. We need help from dog lovers in the community to help us raise more dogs and get the training process started.” The work PTSD Dogs Australia is doing is not only providing a better life for dogs that have been displaced, but it’s also making a world of difference for people who are battling the very real and debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. “If there are any individuals or families in the area who would love to welcome a dog into their home for the duration of their training, they would be making such an incredible contribution for such a worthy cause.” For more information contact PTSD Dogs Australia on 0488 101 026.

NDSHS spike of triumph at volleyball comp

NOOSA District SHS’s Year 11 volleyball team

NOOSA District State High School’s Year 11 volleyball team travelled to the Gold Coast during the final week of school last year to compete in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup for the first time. The largest school-based competition held in the southern hemisphere, with

over 5,000 participants, NDSHS’s team performed extremely well over the six days of very close competition, finishing seventh out of 16 in their division. “Such was the closeness of the competition, with a bit of luck we could have easily been playing for a medal on the final day. An indication

of this was that we defeated the team that won the division when we played them in the pool rounds,” Mr Ron Greentree said. “All members of the team were great ambassadors for our school on and off the court. “Congratulations to all team members!”

This year, Finn Landre, 24, is a secondary mathematics and physical education teacher at NCC. Finn said this is a special homecoming for him as he is an alum of this very institution. “Having spent a year teaching at Peregian Beach College, I am excited to embark on my second year of teaching here at Noosa Christian College. “I bring with me a unique blend of academic and outdoor experiences. I'm enthusiastic about the year to come. When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me riding the waves, wakeboarding, or exploring the scenic trails in our local area.”

How to extend the life of your smile

Dr Arosha Weerakoon.

A HEALTHY smile helps us live long, well and happy lives but just like our bodies, our teeth succumb to age-related changes. Tewantin Family Dental owner and dentist Dr Arosha Weerakoon said our teeth change as we age but there are seven things we can do to ensure our smile lasts the distance. “To understand what happens to teeth as we age, and how to extend the life of our smile, we first need to understand what are teeth

made of. “The tooth crown is covered by a hard enamel coat that surrounds softer, brown dentine, which protects a centrally located pulp. “Enamel is a complex weave of brittle, honeycomb-clustered strands that interact with light to make teeth appear opalescent (a pearly, milky iridescence). “Dentine under enamel forms most of the tooth crown and root, and is made of collagen, mineral, water and proteins. Collagen

strands are woven to stretch and spring back, to prevent teeth from cracking and breaking when we grind and chew. “The pulp has blood vessels and nerves that communicate with the rest of your body. “Enmeshed in the dentine mineral and collagen are small, interconnected tubules formed by specialised cells called odontoblasts that settle around the pulp, once our teeth completely form.

“Each tooth contains a finite number of odontoblasts, unlike the constantly replenished special bone cells that renew.“ Arosha said our teeth, unable to renew, become brittle and prone to fracture as dentine loses its spring. “Brittleness is more common in teeth with existing crack lines, large fillings or root canal treatments. “With time, the outer surface of enamel thins to reveal the relatively opaque dentine that darkens as we age. “The dentine darkens because the collagen weave stiffens and shrinks, and the fluid in the tubules fill with mineral. Arosha says there are seven ways we can extend the life of our teeth and brighten our smile. “One, avoid using your teeth to hold things such as working tools or to open packaging. Take measures to avoid forces such as grinding or clenching by wearing a night guard. If you have large fillings or root canal-treated teeth, speak to your dentist about specific filling materials or crowns that can protect your teeth from cracking or breaking. “Two, if you are miss-

your saliva or manage reflux disease to prevent erosion. “Five, aesthetically, treating gum disease (periodontitis) reduces gum shrinkage (recession) that typically exposes the relatively darker tooth roots that are more prone to developing holes. “Six, cellular senescence is the process that changes DNA in our cells to reduce our ability to withstand physical, chemical or biological damage. “Cellular senescence enhances new cancer formation, the spread of existing cancers and the onset of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. “You can prevent cell damage by managing lifestyle factors such as smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and chronic infections such as gum disease. “Seven, ageing can affect our cognition, hand dexterity and eyesight to prevent us from cleaning our teeth and gums as effectively as we once could. “If this describes you, talk to your dental care team. They can help clean your teeth, and recommend products and tools to fit your situation and abilities,“ Arosha said.

ing molars or premolars, distribute c¡™hewing forces evenly to prevent overloading your remaining teeth. Replace missing teeth with bridges, implants or well-fitted dentures to support your bite. Get your dentures checked regularly to ensure they fit and support adequately, and replace them at least every 10 years. “Three, reduce further enamel and dentine loss by selecting soft-bristled toothbrushes and non-abrasive toothpastes. Certain whitening toothpastes can be abrasive, which can roughen and wear the tooth surfaces. If you are unsure, stick with toothpastes that are labelled 'sensitive'. “Four, saliva protects against acid attacks, flushes our teeth, and has antibacterial properties to reduce erosion and decay (holes forming). Saliva is also important to help us chew, swallow and speak. But our saliva quality and quantity reduces because of age-related changes to our salivary glands as well as certain medications prescribed to manage chronic illnesses such as depression and high blood pressure. Speak to your doctor about other medication options to improve

Is strength training the secret to ageing well? IN the relentless pursuit of a healthier, more vibrant life, strength training might just be your best ally. Beyond the quest for a toned physique, regular strength training offers a raft of benefits tailored to the diverse needs of people over 40, including weight management and other specific challenges we all face as we get older. It rejuvenates your skin: Strength training enhances skin health by promoting better blood circulation, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to skin cells. Increased blood flow stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, the release of growth hormones during strength training supports skin regeneration, contributing to a healthier and more vibrant complexion. It reduces deep belly fat: Strength training, along with adjustments to diet, are powerful combatants to re-

duce visceral fat – the kind that wraps around internal organs and poses many health risks. It helps with menopause: For women, resistance training enhances bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Strength training during and after menopause also helps to maintain hormone health and maintain muscle, which has limitless benefits as we age. It also helps to elevate your mood (see below) which can be super useful during menopause. It helps you stay lean: Increasing muscle mass contributes to a higher resting metabolic rate, which means the body burns more calories at rest. This heightened metabolism helps counteract weight gain by utilising more energy, making it easier to maintain or lose weight. It elevates your mood (even between sessions): Moving your muscles while

strength training also acts as a powerful stress-reliever, releasing endorphins that naturally enhance mood and alleviate stress and anxiety. Strength training helps regulate insulin levels, supporting blood sugar control which helps reduce irritability, fatigue, and mood swings. Strength training also reduces the likelihood of age-related declines in hormone production. What I'd love for you to take from this is that strength training is not just for gym junkies; it is a tailored approach to health and well-being. By incorporating some strength training in your life you are unlocking a pathway to longevity, resilience, and a revitalised sense of vitality. If you want to get started, reach out – I'd love to help. Contact ange@ foreverfitter. com.au

THE free BreastScreen Queensland mobile service will be at Kenilworth Showgrounds from 27 to 29 February providing breast screening for women 40 years and over. A breast screen appointment takes less than 30 minutes and doesn’t require a referral from a doctor. Health Promotion Officer Gillian Duffy said research shows that for women aged 50 to 75 years, a breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early. “This means more treatment options and better outcomes. Our aim is to save lives. “Our resolution for 2024 is to make it even easier for women to have their free breast screen. Make it your resolution to pick up the phone, or jump online, and book that all-important appointment today,” Ms Duffy said. BreastScreen Queensland also has permanent services at Nambour, Noosaville, Maroochydore and Gympie. For more information or to book an appointment call 13 20 50 or visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au.

Sandy Bolton Independent State Member for Noosa A WELCOME start to 2024 has been Seqwater releasing the final design concept for the upgrade of the Lake Macdonald Dam, with early works set to commence in March ahead of major construction in mid-2024. For nearby residents, Seqwater will be door-knocking as well as holding information sessions, with dates and locations to be advised so keep an eye on our Facebook page. It is vitally important that the dam wall is upgraded to improve safety for residents and enable greater resilience during flood-related events. Thank you to the Seqwater team for their work and all Lake Macdonald residents for their ongoing patience during the planning and construction phases. Further information is on Noosa 360, and the Seqwater project team can be contacted on 3432 7000 or via pro-

jectinfo@seqwater.com.au if you have any questions. With parliament resuming in a fortnight, I am looking forward to meeting with the new Minister for Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to discuss numerous issues, including ongoing heavy haulage, Cooroy railway bridge and intersections, as well as pedestrian crossings for Pomona. A reminder that you can write directly to TMR regarding the intersections via NCR_Planning_Comms@ tmr.qld.gov.au and other matters via northcoast@ tmr.qld.gov.au. Whilst doing this, if you live within the Noosa Electorate, please cc us via noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au or if you live in the Nicklin Electorate, please cc nicklin@parliament.qld.gov.au. Noosa 360 on my website has updates on many local matters, including the results from the annual Noosa MP survey, recent occurrences at the former TAFE site in Tewantin, changed school bus routes, Teewah/ Cooloola driver behaviour, and much more. Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor RATEPAYERS can have confidence that council’s finances are in good shape. The latest financial report tabled at our first council meeting of 2024 shows council has gone from having an operating deficit of over $700,000 in August last year to a $304,000 surplus – this $1 million turnaround in its financial operating position being all the more significant as it is on the back of very challenging economic times, resources challenges and an inflationary climate. Having a strong financial position means council can continue to invest in community infrastructure, improve aging assets and minimise rate increases. The mid-year budget review also outlines how we’re delivering $127 million in disaster-funded projects – fully funded by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority – stemming from

the February 2022 Noosa floods. Coupled with our own annual capital works program, we are about to deliver a record $173 million in infrastructure work for the community. This is record spending for Noosa Council and it is ‘bang for your buck’ spending for our community, which is terrific to see. Noosa Council completed the $2.33 million renovation of the Lawnville Road bridge at the end of last year. It provides a wider, stronger, and safer passage for motorists. It's the fourth hinterland bridge to be improved in the last two years and reinforces Noosa Council's commitment to enhancing critical infrastructure for the hinterland communities. Until next month, stay safe. Clare.

DON'T MISS IT!

Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay THE growing scourge of child exploitation is of great concern. The scale and scope of child exploitation in the online environment is staggering, and it’s not just limited to the dark web. Unfortunately, the eSafety Commissioner’s call for a trial of age assurance technology has been ignored by the Albanese Government, which has instead given the pornography industry voluntary codes to manage age verification. It is extremely disappointing that the Labor Government has rejected a trial

aimed at protecting children from pornography and other online harm. A petition supporting the trial is available at: https://www.research. net/r/6ZFRH3P. Worryingly, there has been a 42 per cent increase in reports to the eSafety Commissioner during 2023. Most complaints were made by girls aged between 12 and 16, and more must be done to combat this growing problem. Parents often have little opportunity to keep up with the latest online trends, and the advice for parents is to be aware of the potential for your children to become victims or even perpetrators. If you or your children are being harassed, threatened, intimidated, or humiliated online, you can report the abuse to the eSafety Commissioner at www.esafety. gov.au or call the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. THE hot conditions that our Australian summer brings present particular challenges for our pets. Greater awareness of the risks of heat stress has reduced the number of cases seen by vets, but sadly we still see and hear of pets that have succumbed to heat stroke. My mind goes back to a sheepdog that came into the surgery early in my career in South Australia. The water trough that it used to cool off in whilst working had, unbeknownst to the farmer, run dry, and the poor dog was brought in delirious and died shortly after despite our best efforts to treat him. Hard to forget. A horrific way to go. Apart from the horse, most domestic animals cannot sweat and as such rely on a more restricted cooling system. The engorged tongue and increased salivation seen in hot dogs is their air-conditioner kicking

in. Just as evaporative air-conditioners work best in dry heat, humid conditions dramatically decrease the efficiency of a dog’s ability to dissipate heat. If your dog is of the short face format (pugs, bulldogs), tends to breathe noisily and snores loudly, or has an existing heart or lung condition, you can assume that they are further predisposed to heat stress. Although cats are in general much less prone to overheating due to their sedentary (sensible) nature, a mouth-breathing cat on a hot day is in real trouble and warrants immediate efforts to cool. If left untreated, overheating can lead to severe organ damage and death. A pet that is panting, salivating and looking distressed needs immediate attention to get the body temperature down. Cooling with cold

(not icy) water is an appropriate first step but veterinary advice or attention should always be a priority. To state the obvious, plenty of access to shade and cool water, avoiding activity in the heat of the day, and being aware of the environment your pet is in will greatly reduce the risk of heat stress. Wet flannels around ice bricks can be placed in the home for cats and in guinea pig cages. Don’t forget that footpaths, beach sand and bitumen get hot in the sun – if you find it uncomfortable to walk on a surface barefoot, your dog will too. Stay cool! Craig is the practice principal veterinarian at Cooroy Veterinary Surgery. Phone Cooroy Veterinary Surgery on (07) 5447 6655.

Luke with a big red belly black snake.

THE year is off to a slithering start with snakes everywhere. Snake Catcher Noosa’s Luke Huntley said he describes this time of year as the silly season. “I get calls around the clock 24/7 and I’m not home much. It’s summer and our scaly friends are on the move big time. The boys are out getting some food and the girls are about to have their babies. “A lot is happening in the snake world over

the next few months before it cools down.” Luke said a couple of useful tips for residents this summer is to make sure doors and windows are closed. “Screens are a must in Queensland. “Also keep your property nice and clean and you’ll minimise snakes wanting to hang around. Simple advice but very effective. “Remember my team and I are local and happy to help 24/7. Call 0499 920 290.”

New boxer a rising star COOROY’S Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre has welcomed a new boxer. Ciara Storch originated in Dysart, and under the guidance of her coach and father, Craig Storch, she has notched up an impressive record of 27 wins and two losses. Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre coach Mark Evans said he has had the privilege of knowing Ciara since she started boxing and has helped corner her in most of her bouts. “She’s won two Australian titles, five state titles, five national Golden Gloves, gold at the Oceania Championships in Samoa and has competed all over Australia and internationally. “Ciara recently won her division in Portland USA at the Annual Rip City Classic tournament.” Mark said after long talks with Ciara’s father, they decided to move Ciara to SEQ to help further her career with more competition and sparring opportunities. “Ciara’s coach/father will continue to be a part of his daughter’s journey in every aspect of her career. “We are very much looking forward to continuing this journey with her, with some major goals already set. Watch this space, as this young lady is on a mission. “A big thank you to Ciara’s Gold Sponsor, Quarries of Queensland. Without their support, none of this would be possible,” Mark said.
