Packed sessions for Go-card users Information sessions held at Pomona and Cooroy recently to explain the use of the electronic go-card public transport ticketing system were packed out and have had the unexpected consequence of South-East Queensland’s foremost transport advocacy group calling for more passenger trains to operate between Nambour and Gympie North.

Rail Back On Track convenor, Robert Dow, was the guest speaker at the two seminars held at the Lawson Shed, Pomona, and the Cooroy Library. Pomona & District Community House arranged both events using a TravelSmart grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

The money came from the council’s transport levy.

News From Pomona Gallery…..

The Old Pomona Rail Station Gallery is proud to exhibit the paintings of Sunshine Coast artist Craig Slaney the exhibition, BIRDS OF A FEATHER will showcase paintings of Australian birds.

Craig, a self taught artist, has been photographing and painting birds for over ten years. Birds in their natural environment are his passion and this passion shows in his attention to detail and colour in his paintings. Craig has won numerous awards and recognition over the years and is particularly known for his paintings of Fairy Wrens. The exhibit will open on 8th September and continue to 11th October . Wildlife and bird lovers should not miss this exhibit!

Mr Dow explained the operation of the go-card tickets, how they could be combined with a Seniors Card, and the ways that travellers can use the system to travel at little cost. He urged people to abandon paper tickets when using public transport, as they were 30 per cent dearer than the more flexible electronic ticket.

About 40 people attended the Pomona information session on 30 August, while 30 people went to the Cooroy gathering a week later.

Attendees asked many questions and it became clear that they were eager to try out the free go-cards handed out as part of the campaign to have more people using the Route 632 bus between Cooran and Noosa Junction and the CityTrain passenger rail service from Gympie North to Brisbane’s central station.

Community House believes that better public transport allows greater mobility that supports a vibrant village lifestyle, while creating better connectivity for the communities of the Noosa Hinterland. It wrote a letter of support advocating the extension of the midday train service north of Cooroy to Gympie North. That service commenced in June 2011.

Following his visit to Pomona and Cooroy, Robert Dow issued a media statement that called for two additional shuttle trains to run between Gympie North and Nambour on weekdays. “The population on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland is expanding and the population is aging. Many citizens are no longer able to drive or choose not to drive cars. A lot of people in towns such as Gympie, Pomona, Cooroy and Cooran travel locally, particularly to and from Nambour, for medical appointments, business and social reasons. A service that departs Nambour, say around 7am, for a return from Gympie North at around 8.30am would be very useful. Similarly a service could depart Nambour, say around 4.30pm, for return from Gympie North at 6pm.”

“The present limited rail weekday services depart Nambour at 11.30am and 7.36pm and leave for Brisbane from Gympie North at 5.56am and 1.20pm. These services should be kept, but augmented by the two proposed new shuttle services,” Mr Dow said.

“This would have a tremendous positive impact in this part of QLD in terms of improved mobility and would provide a safe option for travel other than the very dangerous roads. The infrastructure is there, stations and track. It’s time it was used properly,” he said.

A new services contract for funding trains and rail infrastructure on the North Coast Line is due to be signed between Queensland Rail and TransLink, the state government’s public transport coordinating agency, from 1 July 2013.

50 Go- Cards were purchased and allocated to the first 50 bookings.

Thankyou to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for funding this event and the free go cards.

Three volunteers at the Old Pomona Rail Station Gallery, Jo McClements, Jocelyn Truscott and Wendy Britton, received prizes from the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) for their art work which was submitted to a Community Art competition celebrating Noosa's Native Plants.

Author and native plant expert Stephanie Haslam announced the winners at the Noosa Library on 24 August at a special event "The Importance of Place". The annual contest asks artists to create designs on canvas or paper using local native plants as a design motif for use on functional items such as clothing, bags, tea towels and other useful items. The winning motifs will be used on manufactured goods to promote the Noosa region.

Pomona Pacers enjoying a lovely morning tea….

Pomona Pacers At this stage we are still walking at 7.00 am on week days meeting in front of the Pomona Community House. We will eventually think about starting a little earlier as the weather warms up.

Life as a Pomona Pacer is not just hard work. We have coffee on Wednesdays and a Moon Walk around the full moon. Our Moon Walk on Tuesday 28 August was delightful starting with a meal shared with friends and ending in a walk along the Noosa River. Our new mascot, Godfrey Gadabout, was introduced to members at the dinner. He was an instant hit.

Spring is definitely in the air as there were many more people enjoying themselves along the river than there have been in the last couple of months. We do not have a Moon Walk in September and the next one is on 2 October, followed by another one on 30 October.

On a glorious, sunny 28th of July in front of around 40 invited guests, Cr Tony Wellington opened ‘Station Place’, the new showcase garden and community space in Pomona.

An initiative of Noosa & District Landcare, this project has been eight years in the making. Many people have been involved, including Queensland Rail (with whom we negotiated a lease for the land), Shaun Walsh (landscape designer), Sunshine Coast Council and the Rural Futures Network (funding), cash and in-kind donors including local businesses such as Bunneys Lane Nursery, our Green Army crew and a band of wonderful volunteers who helped to plan and build the garden. Backbuilding and One Earth Landscaping were contracted by Noosa Landcare to carry out the hard landscaping work.

‘Station Place’ showcases plants endemic to our area and provides a welcome facelift to, and public space in, the eastern side of the town. It also immediately neighbours our Noosa Landcare nursery. So if sitting in the garden (in which all plants are clearly labelled) inspires you to put similar plantings into your own garden, feel free to drop by the nursery/office for the purchase of plants for your home. We can offer you advice and free information on topics such as plants for attracting birds, windbreaks, wet areas and koala habitat.

‘Station Place’ is located between our office/retail nursery and the Railway Art Gallery in Station Street, Pomona (opposite the pub). It is a wonderful place for locals and visitors to sit, eat, chat and watch these young native plants grow.

Hinterland Noosa Alliance Prospectus The Noosa hinterland region is defined as the rural areas west and north of Cooroy, taking in Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Boreen Point, Cootharaba, Cooroibah, Tinbeerwah, Pinbarren, and Federal.

The Noosa Show Society held its annual Show Girl Dinner Dance on 11th August 2012 to announce the winners of this years Show Girl Competition. 2012 theme was a Masked Dinner Dance in lieu of the normal Show Girl Ball. This event was fabulously attended and a great time was had by all.

The winners this year for Rural Ambassador was Sarah Michel. Miss Noosa Show girl - Johanna Lister-Smith, Miss Teen Noosa –Amy Louise Parker, Miss Junior Noosa – Lauren Hewitt and Little Miss Noosa –Cassidy Magick.

The girls looked absolutely stunning and did the Show Society and the Community proud. They have indicated that they will all be back next year with a few additions from attendees showing interest so it could be a bigger and better event in 2013.

The Show Society President Mr Les Andreassen would like to thank all Sponsors, Committee members, Entrants and Families of entrants for making the night such a wonderful success.

The shop will be open on Tuesdays 9 –1 pm and Thursdays 2 -5pm for people to buy food hampers costing only $30. COME AND SEE THE GREAT VALUE! Being a pastor in this community for many years, including running an Op Shop, we understand the difficulties that many have in this financial climate; therefore it is a privilege to be able to help people meet the challenge by providing this service. This is a nonprofit venture, with only one thing in mind, serving our community.
