LAKE COOTHARABA

BABY HEALTH CLINIC

Sailing Club The Sailing season has kicked off with a great start. This year the “learn to sail” program has a new component. The sailing club have bought some small catamarans called “arrows”. John Dowling will be assisting with the coaching program this season. He has many years of catamaran sailing experience. The smaller size cats are great to start learning the basics that are needed for catamaran sailing, including skipping and trapezing at the same time, tacking and gybing procedures and even rigging options. The club welcomes everyone to come and try sailing for 3 Sundays and then when you join the club at very reasonable family rates you can access the club coaching in both catamarans and sailing dinghies including the junior boats called “minnows” every Sunday during the season.

provided adequate precautions are taken such as, a cleared area of flammable material 3 metres around and above the fire, enclosing the fire and ensure a water supply with a person in close attendance. The QFRS is aiming to reduce the number of fires that get out of control and we support them. These small fires can end in major property damage and potential loss of life.

These Police articles are to keep you in the loop with law related issues and hopefully entertained as well. Policing can be onerous, but it’s also a front row seat on life and there have been some great stories and characters unearthed in our travels. About us: Pomona station is currently staffed with 4 police and a part time admin officer. Our division covers a large area including Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Cootharaba, Middle Creek and Federal, about 8000 people in all. We also have a stretch of Bruce highway from Black Mountain to Skyring Creek. Station counter hours are 9am to 2pm Monday to Wednesday, although we often have staff there from 8am to 4pm weekdays dependant on calls for service. If the station is unattended, we can be contacted on phone number 54852586 which will divert to the police communications section, obviously if it’s urgent dial 000. We try to work a day and evening shift each day, and are on call when the station is unattended. RBT: As part of a QPS focus on preventing alcohol related motor vehicle incidents, Random Breath Testing has become an almost every day occurrence for the general motorist. We detect a reasonable number of drink drivers for the size of our division, (8 in July) although the higher readings of 0.15% and over are becoming rare. Our highest reading was 0.330% which is almost 7 times the legal limit. This bloke nearly ran into me and was not a happy drunk by the end of the night! We recognise that a lot of you will be on your way home after a big day when intercepted, and with very few exceptions, you’re patient and polite. An intercept will often also involve a check of your driver’s license and car registration. We appreciate your ongoing assistance, and have noticed a marked change from the old days of Pomona division where drink driving and other serious offences were not the exception. Remember, the legal limit is 0.05%.which is less than 2 standard drinks for men and one for women, per hour. It’s safest not to drink if you have to drive, good chance we’ll meet up and a good night out shouldn’t end with a ride in a blue light taxi!

Top Gun: Times change but generally the types of jobs we encounter don’t, although we had one a few months ago that rates a mention. An older, clearly experienced, pilot takes off from an airfield in a classic 1940’s light plane on a joy flight. Passing over the Kin Kin range (which looks like the Kokoda track from the air) the engine fails and can’t be re started. Not much joy in that. You had to see where he put it down to believe it, a dead stick landing on a rough grassy cow paddock at Pinbarren with a steep incline, and no injuries or damage! Pilot was hardly sweating, more worried that the cattle would bend his plane scratching ticks! Located property: Samsung black model CE0168 3.2 mega pixel mobile phone, located in Pomona August 2011. This is currently held at Pomona station. Stay safe and we’ll see you on the road.
