Pomona In The Park Lights, Cameras Action! Thursday November 22 the Pomona State School’s annual community event ‘Pomona in the Park’ is on again. Family and friends from across the hinterland will once again converge on Stan Topper Park with their picnic rugs and hampers for an evening of fun and entertainment that culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. As the time rapidly approaches, class teachers and students are busy planning performances that will be a major part of the Arts curriculum for term four. Previous years have seen the stage come alive with 23 young Roy Orbisons, Smurfs, a tribute to the Addams Family, surfie dudes and disco divas to rival Donna Sommers! Generous sponsorship by our major sponsors, Page Furnishers and IGA Pomona, allow the students the opportunity to perform with the support of professional sound and lighting technicians and to showcase their achievements in The Arts., whilst the Lions keep everyone’s stomach full with a wonderful BBQ. The evening commences at 5:30 with a choral performance by Pomona Community Choir, so bring your rugs and cameras to Stan topper Park on the evening of November 22 for an entertaining evening of song and dance. The final climax of the evening is the FIREWORKS!!!

Have a say in new planning scheme POMONA – Communities across the Noosa Hinterland will be given an opportunity to comment on the new Sunshine Coast planning scheme that will shape our towns and the way we live over the next 20 years. A planning scheme guides the way land, buildings and structures are used and developed. It will help ensure that our region can support growth, while remaining a great place to live, work and play. Since local government amalgamation in 2008, the Sunshine Coast Council has managed three planning schemes – the Caloundra City Plan 2004, the Maroochy Plan 2000 and the Noosa Plan 2006. The new draft scheme, now open for public comment until 14 December 2012, will apply uniformly across the former three council areas and will apply in Noosa even if de-amalgamation occurs next year. The council will conduct public meetings and displays in Hinterland villages so that people can be better informed about future plans for all areas. The sessions times: Boreen Point’s Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club 20 Nov 2pm – 6pm
Pomona Memorial Hall on 22 Nov 1.30pm – 5.30pm Cooran School of Arts Hall 27 Nov 2pm – 6pm For further information, contact the planning scheme staff on 5475 7526, or visit www.draftscplanningscheme@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
POMONA – After recovering from the worst floods in living memory at the start of the year, and coping with the economic and emotional aftermath such events inflict, Pomona has emerged triumphant as one of Queensland’s top communities for 2012. The town was named a semi-finalist in the Queensland’s Community of the Year category at a Regional Achievement and Community Awards gala presentation dinner held at the Oaks Oasis Resort, Caloundra, earlier this month. It adds to a string of other gongs the town has won during the past decade, including twice being named Queensland’s friendliest town. The award certificate was accepted from the Mayor Mark Jamieson by Heather Manders and Kathryn Shewring, coordinators at the Pomona and District Community House. Commenting on Pomona’s award, Community House coordinator Heather Manders, stressed that the judges of the 2012 Regional Achievement and Community Awards had recognised the work of all community groups at Pomona. “The judges took into account our high degree of volunteerism and the fabulous work of all organisations, including the Noosa District Museum, Pomona Arts Inc, Noosa & District Landcare, Pomona Meals on Wheels and the Cooroy-Pomona Lion Club,” Heather said. “This is not about us blowing our own trumpet, but people outside our community looking on and saying we are among the best when compared with other communities across the state. That boosts morale, but also confirms we are on the right track, with more of the journey to go,” Heather said. A Special thank you to Brian O’Connor for nominating our wonderful community. The Regional Achievement and Community Awards are held every year. They recognise people and groups in individual categories, including business, landcare, youth achievement, regional tourism and communities. The state government WIN Television and Commonwealth Bank were among sponsors for 2012.

Pomona Pacers How delightful it was today to walk through the cool of the forest. Occasional changes in venue like this make the walk more interesting. It is sad to see that rubbish is dumped in these out-of-the-way areas. We are still meeting at 6.30 am on week days in front of the Community House. Our numbers this week have been much better with eight people walking on a couple of occasions. It is good to note that Max and Graeme walk regularly so if there are any other men wanting to join in, you will be in good company. The moon was out in full view on 30 October, seven of us enjoyed the meal and eight walked along the Noosa River. Our next Moon Walk is on 27 November and this will be followed by our final night walk for 2012 which will be held on 18 December. The full moon is a week later but we have brought the walk forward because of Christmas. For more information on our daily walks or the Moon Walks phone Assunta on 5485 2935.

The Battlefields of World War 1 I had wanted to visit the battlefields of the Western Front for more years than I can remember, but had never managed the trip when I lived in the UK. However, I have been involved for some time with Adopt a Digger®, and as I have been researching local boys from Cooroy, Pomona, Cootharaba and Cooran, it seemed as though this year was the right time to go, so in September, I went on a journey that proved to be far more emotional than I had expected. The first thing that struck me was the sheer numbers of cemetaries, some large and some small – all beautifully tended and looked after. It seemed strange to visit the graves of our brave boys who gave their lives during the horror of that war, but I went to represent their communities who have never forgotten their sacrifice. On each grave, I placed a small Australian flag, a poppy or two and a card with their photo, details and a message from us all. For those where I hadn’t been able to find a photo, their card had a field of Flanders poppies on, and for those with no known grave, I placed their cards and flags with Remembrance Crosses on the Villers Bretonneux memorial and the Menin Gate where their names are carved. I realized that these were boys who had gone to school together, played and worked all around this area that we know as “home” and joined up together. Some of them would have fought alongside their mates, and some died together also. For families who still mourn the loss of their loved ones, rest assured that they are in a lovely, peaceful place. The countryside is once again gently rolling hills, quiet rivers and lush farmland....so different to the harsh realities they met almost a hundred years ago. When I asked my tour guide how they can bear to live with such sadness every day he said, “ They fought and died for us, and we will look after them always.....it is not sadness but an honour to have them here.” Carol Raffaele - diggerresearch@gmail.com J.G.P Horsman's name on the Menin Gate, and my poppy for him. Rocky Road 1 Pkt Maltesers 1 Pkt Peanut M&M's 1 Pkt Clinkers -
(Pascal's brand no longer avail. - use alternative brand - purple pkt)
1 Pkt sugar coated soft fruit jubes (Natural Confectionery's Fruit Salad)
1 Pkt Nestle dark chocolate melts 1 cup - Additional Peanuts if desired - use rice bubbles or biscuit pieces as alternative. You can also add shredded coconut if desired, or desicated is too fine. Line a Tupperware container with baking paper. Cut jubes and marshmallows into thirds. (using scissors is easiest). Put all ingredients except chocolate melts into large bowl, mix a little. Melt chocolate melts and pour into lolly mix, stir until chocolate covers all lollies. Pour into prepared container and refrigerate for a couple of hours or overnight. Another idea is to make a cone out of cardboard and put rocky road mix into the cone. When set, cut cardboard away and you have a rocky road "Christmas Tree" looks great in the centre of the table on Christmas day!

Meals on Wheels volunteer opportunities Volunteers are at the core of the expanding Pomona and District Meals on Wheels service, with a number of opportunities open for willing helpers – not least, someone who can take over the role of treasurer. “Irene Gibbs, who has been our treasurer for the past year, has resigned in order to handle other commitments,” President Michael Innis said, “so we are looking for someone able to take on that position as soon as possible. “And we can always use additional volunteer helpers in our kitchen and as delivery drivers.” The service operates from the Pomona Memorial Hall, with deliveries three days a week to clients in Pomona, Cooroy, Eumundi, Cooran, Traveston, Kin Kin and Boreen Point. Freshly cooked three-course hot meals are provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with frozen meals also available. Kitchen volunteers work from 7am to about 11am and drivers for an hour or two from 11am on delivery days. Rosters are prepared a month in advance with a commitment sought for as little as a couple of hours a month. The committee meeting this week heard that deliveries in October had topped the 50-a-day mark. Anyone interested in volunteering with Meals on Wheels can phone Anne Coombes at the office on 5485 1777 or Michael Innis on 0422 877 971. Kitchen supervisor Di Donaldson, 5442-6059 or 0400 795 919, would be happy to talk to people interested in helping in the kitchen.

PERMACULTURE NOOSA SEED SAVERS We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month, 9.30 - 11.30am at "A Touch of the Past" Coffee shop, 18 Reserve Street, Pomona. An opportunity to share information and experiences on growing food in our gardens in order that we become more self-sufficient. The purpose is to save & exchange seeds and propagating material. We will sort and package seeds for the Seed Bank to preserve and pass on our heritage seeds for our future food security.
It is hard to believe it is nearly December already. By now most of us are on the downhill slide to Christmas and wondering again where the year has gone.
Bring along any excess seeds to process & package and contribute to the Seed Bank or just come along for a chat and a cuppa. No fee or booking. All welcome. Just turn up.
At Bendigo Bank we have had an exciting year – on November 15th the Cooroy Community Bank Branch celebrated its 10th birthday. Over the last four years we have contributed more than $400,000 back into the local community, including funds toward the installation of the new heat pump at Cooroy Swimming pool, planning outcomes from our community forum, and our continued sponsorship of a variety of local clubs and organisations. We have recently signed another three year sponsorship agreement with the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival.

While at this stage there are no cash facilities, it is our aim to generate enough business to enable us to open a branch or an agency so we can fully service Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin and the surrounding areas. Our board has committed to donating funds directly back into the community, which means that the more loans and deposits that we get, the more the community benefits. At Bendigo Bank, we believe that successful people create successful communities which in turn create successful banks. In that order. While I know how busy the next few months can be, there is never a better time to think about your finances than now.
