Pomona Playgroup The community playgroup run by the Uniting Church in Pomona has just turned two! Starting out with a small group meeting in the Uniting Church hall in Pomona, this playgroup has grown beyond all expectations - a tribute to those involved. The playgroup is led by Sue Mulcahy, a qualified childcare educator and is affiliated with Playgroup Queensland. The Church has responded by renewing and enlarging their child safe areas - creating plenty of space both indoors and outdoors, for children from 0 – 5/6years Last Sunday (23 October) the Pomona Uniting Church held a special 'children’s service” to celebrate children’s week and the second anniversary of this exciting venture. Members of the playgroup and their families were invited to attend. Reverend David Fanning and Mrs Sue Mulcahy led this special service with standing room only for the late arrivals ! Families gathered after the service to cut the birthday cake, and enjoy a sausage sizzle while the children were releasing some energy on the jumping castle ! A successful initiative much appreciated by our community. For more information about this playgroup please ring Sue Mulcahy ph 5447 7277 or come along to the Pomona Uniting Church at 9.00 am on Tuesday mornings during school terms.

Ex-Servicemen needed Men’s Shed Pomona Community House is currently involved in getting a Men‟s Shed up and running for Pomona and needs as many men, in particular, ex-servicemen to register their interest in being involved. The Department of Veterans Affairs provides grants toward establishment of these Sheds but we have to prove that it will benefit the Veteran population in the area. If you are interested either phone the Community House on 54852427 or by email to brian@pomonacommunityhouse.com.au The first Men‟s Shed was established about 10 years ago in Lane Cove in Sydney and it inspired another 520 Shed‟s to be established around Australia since then.

Expression of Interest Golf Lessons for all Ages……

Golf Instruction by Experienced Level 1 Accredited Golf Coach

More Broadband Equipment needed Six Years ago Pomona & District Community House was responsible for bringing Internet to Pomona and nearby residents by a campaign to get people to register their interest in getting connected. After 100 people registered, Telstra provided equipment at the exchange to cater for this but, with more and more people using the internet this equipment (connection ports) has not been added to to cater for the growth. Because of the lack of Ports people have been told to connect using Satellite or Wireless technology. Both of these methods are unreliable, slow, inefficient and expensive with very little download allowances. If you have been unable to have Broadband connected or been told that it is not available in your area, but your next door neighbours have access, please register your interest and tell us about your experience trying to get connected and we will attempt to get something done to fix the problem. The more people who register a complaint the better chance we have of getting the exchange upgraded so please contact the House on 54852427 or preferably by email to brian@pomonacommunityhouse.com.au

Working Bee Sunday 20 November

There is a group of volunteers who have started to meet monthly to take care of Cooroora Park. The group does weeding, planting and oversees the park for the benefit of the community. The group would like to do a call out for volunteers to join the group in the Cooroora Connect. All ages can come. We advise wearing protective clothing, sturdy shoes, a hat and gloves.

Install triple locking security screens on doors and windows, especially those at the rear of premises, out of view from the street where these critters dwell. They will always take the easy option if presented.

Do not hold any cash at the premises, take it home or install a safe. Leave the till open and empty, and advertise this fact as many of these grubs are simply looking for quick cash. They will soon learn to look elsewhere.

It’s a load of fun and volunteers learn about plants and conservation in a friendly environment. Contact: Gemma Wright

Pest Control: As a community, we probably spend more money and time preventing termites and roaches each year than we do man sized intruders. You know, the spineless variety that crawl in through broken windows overnight, steal your goods and slide back out, to infest some other premises. We had a number of break and enter offences in the Pomona Business area in October, with Cooroy businesses copping the same a few days later. These are likely the same offenders as their methods are similar. To help prevent these unlawful entries, conduct a review of your security and consider the following tips.

Some of you already have alarms and video surveillance cameras installed with recording backup. This is the 1 st thing we ask for as investigators. Very difficult to beat good video as evidence and offenders are regularly charged with dozens of linked offences in other areas as a result.

These pests are lazy and love nothing more than an open door in the house to ruin your day. Lock your doors and windows even if out for a short time, keep wallets, mobile phones and valuables like jewellery locked away or on your person.

Importantly, talk to your neighbours, especially if you‟re going away for any length of time, they will notice things which can identify suspects. If something doesn‟t look right, at least note the person‟s description, car rego/features, many offences are solved this way, call us immediately if you think an offence is about to occur.

Let the police know if you see suspicious activity such as vehicles, persons loitering near businesses or dwellings that are out of the ordinary. We continue to receive useful intelligence from the community and any information relating to crime can be reported to us or anonymously to crime stoppers on 1800 333000. On Any Sunday Unregistered noisy trail bikes are regularly being ridden in Forestry areas and roads around Pomona. Most trail bike riders are decent contributors to the community, engaging in An active exciting hobby, often with their families. Most of these riders are licensed on registered bikes and know where they can ride legally and responsibly. The few others don‟t care that they are disturbing many residents and can‟t be told otherwise. Most local Forestry areas, including the Noosa Trail network are off limits for unauthorised vehicles including 4wd‟s and motorcycles, and are clearly signed at track entrances. Unlicensed riders on unregistered machines such as motocross bikes cannot ride anywhere in state Foresty. Police and the EPA respond to these complaints and offenders can be heavily fined and have their bikes confiscated. We have several police trail bike riders at Pomona and conduct forestry operations in problem areas. Take it seriously, consider the impact on the locals, your sport and your wallet, and parents please take an interest in where your kids may be riding. Stay safe until next time.

"Some partnerships, were meant to be. Dva is unique in both instrumentation and output, Pollak having invented many of the wind instruments he plays. Beier, meanwhile, plays an array of handdrums from Africa, India and points in between. Their combined influences primarily the music of Eastern Europe, India and Africa - add up to a swirl of colours as they enjoy almost telepathic dialogues on self-penned or traditional compositions, which give way to thrilling improvisations. Dva is at the forefront of Australian creative music."

White Ribbon Day 25 November, The UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The White Ribbon organisation‟s current campaign encourages Australian men and boys to swear an oath to stop violence against women. The Oath – “I swear to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women” – goes beyond just clicking a button. By swearing the Oath and wearing a white ribbon on 25 November, we can all actively show our commitment to promote positive attitudes and behaviours towards women. So find out more and take the Oath at http:// www.whiteribbon.org.au/myoath and, as Mahatma Gandhi would say – „be the change you want to see in the world’.

WHAT DO YOU CARE ABOUT IN YOUR COMMUNITY? What you said……

Good facilities/transport – 19 “People being able to access training (no cost or low cost) computers, groups and somewhere to socialise.” “Having access to services and shops.” “There needs to be a drop in centre for teenagers.” “…great shops/ great local school.”

Community Events/opportunities for fun and creativity – 21 “Support for local musicians and community performances.” Thank you to everyone who responded to our Community Survey. Your replies were heartfelt and revealing. Thirty three residents replied via the boxes placed around Pomona and Cooran, and we collected another sixty two responses from the blackboard and from the posters outside the Mountain Stop Café and the Flower Room. To give you a quick overview we have sorted the responses into some broad categories. Some replies covered more than one area so we have counted them as separate items. Here, we have given you the number of responses in each category with just a few examples.

“The creativity – music, art for young and old…” “Promoting community spirit and inclusion especially for the young people…” “Markets/community events/King of the Mountain Festival/Pomona in the Park…the freedom for our kids to hang out in the local park.” “More gatherings – music/children’s activities…”

Safety/Law and Order – 10

Family/friends/neighbours/community spirit/ inclusion/resilience – 29

“…keeping Pomona small and safe for our children.”

“I wish our community to be happy…supportive of our elderly and young people.”

“Law and order. Noise. Children wandering the streets at night. Safety…”

“Friendliness everywhere we go around Pomona. The feeling that there will be resilience and sharing come hard times.” “Relationships; inclusion; harmony; tolerance…open mindedness…friendship; fun; …courtesy; consideration…working together for a community purpose.”

A copy of the full list of comments is available for viewing at the Pomona Community House until we close for the year on Friday 17th December. Thank you to the Pomona IGA, the Pomona Newsagency , the Cooran General Store, the Flower Room and the Mountain Stop café for assisting us with this project.

“I care about community connection – people being there for me and each other…”

Environment/peace & quiet/beauty – 28 “I care about my environment – the way I can be a part of it at my backdoor. It’s great to have a national forest near me – love nature.” “Parks and wildlife: for health and fitness, for visual beauty, for clean environment, for animals to enjoy, for use in entertainment.” “Environmental habitats.”
