Our volunteers make world of difference The Noosa Hinterland’s older demographic and larger number of young at heart retirees translates into a higher percentage of ‘young at heart’ volunteers in our communities – all making a world of difference to the clubs and groups that help underpin our lifestyle advantage.

Their work will be celebrated at the Pomona Memorial Hall on Tuesday 21 May at an afternoon tea, where Tony Wellington will be the official guest.

Making a World of Difference is the official theme for National Volunteer Week, with Volunteering Australia commemorating 30 years organising the event.

The statistics reveal that six million Australians volunteer their time for free.

The hinterland has the highest level of volunteerism in Noosa Shire.

The mobilisation of volunteers is critical to responding to social and economic challenges, political change and natural disasters, Volunteering Australia says on its website.

Both of these not-forprofit groups are always on the lookout for new volunteers.

Tom Quilty endurance ride brings horses and dollars to Mary Valley The Tom Quilty Gold Cup is the annual national championship event for equestrian endurance and is recognised internationally as one of the toughest events for horses and their riders.

The right to stage the endurance ride rotates among states and in July 2019 will be hosted by Stirlings Crossing Endurance Club at Imbil.

Australian and overseas riders will compete over two days.

Poker Run supports district’s charities

The unmistakable ‘brum brum’ sound of Harley Davidson motorcycles and the ‘vroom’ of all manner of other motorbikes will be heard across the hinterland on Sunday 30 June when the 12th Annual King of the Mountain Poker Run gets underway in support of Pomona’s biggest fundraiser of the year – the race to the top of Mt Cooroora and back on 28 July.

Last year’s event saw more than 100 participating motorcycle enthusiasts from near and far.

Once again they are expected to don their leathers in pursuit of good company and a scenic ride

The ride culminates at the Pomona Bowls Club where riders can enjoy refreshments during the raffle prize draws and award presentation, and a free sausage sizzle.

Breakfast and morning tea will be available along the way.

Rows of motorcycles will appear on Pomona’s streets Sunday 30 June for the annual King of the Mountain Poker Run event. through the beautiful Noosa hinterland.

Proudly supported by the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club, riders and their passengers will join in on a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops.

The holder of the best poker hand at the end of

the day is declared the winner and there are additional random prize draws during the day.

Cost of entry is $20 per rider (including poker hand), plus $10 per pillion (non-poker hand).

Registrations commence from 7.30am at Stan Topper Park, Pomona for a 9am departure.

Festival celebrates Noosa’s history, people and places A series of speakers will educate and inspire those who attend the fourth annual Noosa Shire Museum Heritage Day event to be held at the museum’s Factory Street surrounds on Saturday 4 May, from 9am to 2.30pm.

The Pomona Choir will be in fine voice from 9am, while community displays and booths will be staffed by volunteers representing the Wildlife Volunteers Association, the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association, Men’s Shed Pomona and the Coastal Car Club, among others.

Dog owners warned to control their pets Noosa Council has issued a stern warning to owners of aggressive or roaming dogs to take full responsibility for their pets following recent canine attacks on an elderly man and a flock of sheep. Thirty sheep died in the rural property incident.

Last month, dog attacks spiked at about a dozen, with nearly half involving contact with a person.

“All attacks are avoidable. If a dog is found roaming it will be impounded.

If a dog is found to be a nuisance or aggressive, the repercussions can be both serious and costly,” Mr Amson said.

“All residents should be able to go about their daily routines without getting mauled by a roaming dog.

We urge dog owners to ensure their animal is kept within the confines of their property,” he said. “When walking a dog, they should be on a leash.”

Dogs that are under investigation for aggressive behaviour or attacks can be declared dangerous by Council.

This can result in fines for the owner and restrictions around how the animal can be housed and presented in public. “A majority of dog owners are great but there are a small number of irresponsible owners,” Mr Amson said.

Help Landcare save our district’s koala habitat The forests around Pomona having been saved from further logging to become prime koala habitat, it’s time for members of the public to step up and get involved in actively working towards arresting the declining numbers of this iconic species.

In the latest of its Link-up Workshop Series, Noosa and District Landcare is inviting the public to learn more about its Koala Rehabilitation Project in the Ringtail and Yurol Forests, through a presentation at the Rural Futures Centre, Pomona, from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday 16 May. In November last year, a landmark partnership involving the Queensland Government, Noosa Council, Noosa Parks Association and HQ Plantations saw agreement reached to return 2600ha of land from plantation forestry use to National Park.

The $3.5 million required to achieve this outcome was funded jointly by the Department of Environment and Science

(DES), Noosa Council and the Parks Association.

May’s workshop will be presented by Rachel Lyons of Noosa and District Landcare and Wildcare Australia.

She has been involved in wildlife habitat protection, enhancement and restoration endeavours for more than 20 years – working for Landcare, as a private consultant and council employee, and regional natural resource management bodies.

As a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation volunteer, Rachel has great knowledge of the impacts and habitat of the Noosa area for fauna, including the endangered koala. Her presentation involves an overview of the plight of the Noosa koala population, what members of the public can do to help, and gives a summary of the past two koala seasons locally.

TRAILS MASTERPLAN DELAY The Noosa Trail Network Master Plan being prepared jointly by Tourism Noosa and Noosa and District Landcare with the aid of a Noosa Biosphere Foundation grant has been delayed until the end of the financial year to allow consultants Common Ground Trails to make additional assessments. Council says ‘no’ to Anzac Day Pomona march Noosa Council refused to allow a traditional street parade to be held in conjunction with the reintroduction of Anzac Day services at Pomona this year despite the organisers’ plans for one.

The Pomona Memorial Committee sought a police permit and doorknocked homes along the proposed route to obtain the permission of all residents for their driveways to be blocked for the approximately 30 minute duration of the parade set-up and march. The route included Memorial Avenue, the street named for fallen Diggers.

The council is remaining tightlipped about its reasons for banning a march along roads under its direct control.

In a written statement, the council’s Director of Community Services, Ms Kerri Contini, said: “Council will not be reviewing the conditions of a permit issued for the Anzac Day commemoration service in Pomona, as careful consideration has already been given to (the) Cooroora Historical Society’s permit request.

“I therefore reiterate that permission for a march has not, and will not be given, following consultation with various stakeholders.”

Revised air paths avoid Pomona and Cooroy Three northern flightpaths for aircraft taking off and landing at the new Sunshine Coast Airport runway that would have passed over the hinterland towns of Cooran, Cooroy and Pomona have been scrapped by Airservices Australia in favour of new routes closer to Cooroibah and the coast.

The changes to the original Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) recommendations have residents of Castaways Beach up in arms over likely noise impacts and have sparked calls for an extension of public feedback on the proposal, which closed on 30 April.

Noosa Council has requested of Airservices Australia, the national air navigation service provider, a detailed explanation for the recommended changes.

One argument in favour of directing flight paths away from Pomona, Cooroy and surrounds was that aeroplane exhausts should not impact adversely on properties reliant on tank water.

Interest in the flightpath planning was strong when a steady stream of people passed through the Pomona display on Wednesday 10 April.

In a move to limit possible impacts on coastal residents, Noosa Council has called for an enforced night-time curfew for Sunshine Coast Airport and an extension to the consultation period to support residents’ concerns about Airservices Australia’s proposed changes to flight paths.

The council also wants the airport owner, Sunshine Coast Council, to conduct an independent EIS for Lake Weyba, Noosa National Park and the coastal dunes within the Castaways and Marcus Beach areas.

Federal grant will help strengthen communities

Hinterland bridges to be replaced The Tablelands Road bridge at Cooran and the Wahpunga Lane bridge at Kin Kin will be replaced, made possible through grant funding of more than $1 million from the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program. Noosa Council will match the federal funding dollar-for-dollar.

The Tablelands Road bridge was given federal funding of $477,288, while the Wahpunga Lane bridge Kin Kin received $763,661.

“This is a great investment in infrastructure for the Noosa Hinterland, as these bridges have reached the end of their lifecycle.” Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said.

The timber bridges will be fully removed and replaced by concrete structures. The project is expected to take about two years to complete.

Both bridges were considered as ‘high priority’ for replacement following a condition report undertaken by the council.

Cr Wellington said there would now be a twelve-month planning, design and procurement process starting in the 201920 financial year.

QR said they had found a solution, but we didn’t think it would be this,” he said.

QR has delayed construction of the cross-town path and says it is still working on its design.

Hopes of reviving the original vision of Cootharaba’s Kabi Golf Course operating in conjunction with an organically-certified orchard have been revived following sale of the property and an adjacent block of land to an unknown overseas buyer for a combined price of more than $6 million.

Qld Govt agrees TAFE price Noosa Council staff will negotiate with the State Government over the purchase conditions that will transfer ownership of the former Noosa TAFE college following agreement to the $1.7 million sale price.

Settlement on the sale of the 11ha site at Tewantin is due in a couple of months.

Mayor Tony Wellington said the potential future uses for the building would be examined, with emphasis on community benefit at no additional cost to Noosa ratepayers.

“We have received a great many suggestions from residents: everything from a research centre to affordable housing. But in the end, whether we on-sell the site, subdivide it to preserve the critical habitat, or develop the site ourselves, the outcome cannot be an ongoing drain on finances. It has to pay its way.” The Mayor said a significant portion of the site was home to endangered vegetation, plus koala, black cockatoo and wallum rocketfrog habitat.

Community benefits from Stratford Park residents The Stratford Park Community Group (SPCG) wound up recently, resulting in a $593 windfall to Pomona and District Community House.

The Men's Shed Pomona was the other recipient of the group’s surplus funds.

Community House will use its money to fund NAIDOC Week activities in July.

The Stratford Park Community Sharynne Group has been in Durbidge, place for several SPCG Treasurer years with its activities focussed mainly around a central park. However, the developer sold the site recently.

TOWN TALK With work on the new cross-town path over the railway tracks at the Pomona Railway Station delayed until after the King of the Mountain Festival on 28 July, Queensland Rail is examining whether to restrict trains through Pomona to a speed limit of 40kph between 8am and 6pm on the day. The concrete path had to be ripped up because tree roots had lifted sections of path, making it a safety hazard. Council work crews are awaiting internal funding approvals before starting rehabilitation of the site with a brand new concrete walking surface. ****** Pomona’s new half basketball court is almost finished, awaiting final court markings towards the end of April. The old court has been ripped up and returned to grass within Stan Topper Park. Students size up pavilion

POMONA AS A DOG-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY Pomona could be the focus of a university study into dog -friendly communities and dog walking.

Our love of dogs has caught the eye of Infomatics staff at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), who have put the case for internal funding to conduct the study. Infomatics is the linking of statistical data collection with information processing engineering.

If successful, funds will be forthcoming by July, allowing the project to start mid-year.

Now here’s an interesting statistic – more than 62 per cent of Australian households have pets, with more households having cats or dogs than children.

The pavilion at the Pomona Showgrounds (above) joined the list of buildings that architectural students from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) will redesign as part of their degree studies.

Armed with tape measures, sketch pads and lots of questions, the students visited Pomona last month to bring a designer’s eye to the show pavilion, The Majestic Theatre, the Noosa Museum and the Pomona Memorial Hall.

Their brief was to preserve the building’s character while exploring options for allowing new functions to take place in extensions to all four iconic structures.

The students will present their concepts to lecturers and tutors next month and it is hoped that a contingent of Pomona people will be able to attend on the day.

Pacers climb the heights and hit the trails

by Leonie At the extremity of the Pomona Pacers walking group territory, the Glass House Mountains was the destination for a recent excursion up Mount Ngungun, known for its relative ease and accessibility. The path leads up through bushland, switchbacks and then through a steeper section with a series of rock steps and a cavernous rock overhang, before it ascends less steeply towards the top.

The last section is a short rock scramble, with fantastic views the reward for reaching the summit. Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland.

The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.

Battle of the towns at Pomona Indoor Bowls It will be the battle of the hinterland towns when the Pomona Indoor Bowls Club plays host to teams from Tewantin, Gympie and Palmwoods at a social bowls championship event at the Pomona Memorial Hall on 15 May. The Pomona contingent was hard at work practising recently, during the ritual Wednesday sessions.

And you can help defend the town’s honour at a future event by becoming a member of the indoor bowls troupe, currently numbering 41.

The bowlers meet every Wednesday from 9am to 11.30pm.

Morning tea is served after the first two games.

Avenue of memories It’s not really a police-related item, but first up I would like to comment on the excellent Pomona Anzac Day dusk service, which I understand to be the first in many years.

Organisers Heather Ford and Nathanael Ford did sterling work in setting up and running it and it was very well attended by locals, and long overdue.

Hopefully, we’ll have a full parade next year, which police will be more than happy to support. Having visited the Northern France and Belgian WW1 battlefields in 2015 and walked through seas of white headstones, it’s not hard to imagine just what a devastating loss 28 young men would have been for Pomona District’s WW1 population of about 500.
