Council investigates buying Majestic Theatre In a move that would cement The Majestic Theatre as the No.1 live performance and arts space in the Noosa Hinterland, Noosa Council is investigating the feasibility of buying the old dame, ending its crippling monthly mortgage repayments and placing it on a sound financial footing.

At last month’s general council meeting, councillors requested the council CEO, Brett de Chastel, to provide a report to a future Council meeting that more fully addresses the option of purchasing the Majes-

tic Theatre with particular focus on the statutory, financial and any other due diligence issues that Council would need to consider before making any decision to purchase the property.

Meanwhile, the council resolved to undertake a condition assessment of the theatre in order to develop a Conservation Management Plan and a schedule of programmed maintenance for the building in conjunction with Pomona Arts Inc. (PAI), the not-for-profit owners. It wants to monitor PAI’s progress in becom-

ing financially sustainable and the organisation’s ability to effectively identify and fund any potential reactive building maintenance over the next twelve months before considering whether any further action or assistance is required.

It will allocate $16,667 from the Heritage Levy, as an immediate payment to assist PAI remain sustainable, subject to conditions:  A business case is developed that demonstrates how PAI will reduce the operational cost base and improve its financial position; and  PAI looks at ways to increase its income stream from the Pomona Country Markets.

The council also wants PAI to strengthen its partnership with Tourism Noosa and looks to develop new revenue opportunities aimed at the inbound tourism market.

RYDA an essential part of young drivers’ lives Road trauma impacts on all members of our community.

Encouragingly, the number of lives lost on our roads continues to fall each year, but every life lost is tragic.

Educating drivers in their early years can be a key factor in reducing the toll over time, and our local Rotary Clubs are as passionate as ever about taking action to see that happens.

The combined Rotary Clubs of Noosa, Noosa Heads, Noosa Daybreak and Cooroy joined forces again this week, assisting in taking more than 100 Noosa District State High School students through the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) Program at The House With No Steps in Doonan.

The program sees students taking one day out of school to receive practical road safety information targeting attitude and awareness of young drivers and their passengers.

RYDA targets 16-18 year old students and includes six interactive sessions delivered to small student groups covering topics such as hazards and distractions, speed and stopping distance, vehicle safety, fatigue and experiences of a crash survivor.

RYDA Noosa Committee Chairman, Geoff Bone said if even one life can be saved from this training, then it’s all worthwhile.

“Since 2009, the combined Rotary Clubs have held 45 program days, with 4,228 Year 11 students having attended the RYDA Program locally.

In the bigger picture, more than 500,000 have attended RYDA Australia-wide since the program’s inauguration some 20 years ago,” Mr. Bone shared.

While attendance by the schools is commendable, RYDA is only attracting about 86% of the Year 11 enrolled students in our local schools. This equates to 2,432 student attendees over the past four years, so there is some work to do.

The aim is to have every year 11 student attend. The full day program is free so there is no reason why every enrolled student can’t attend.

For its part, the local Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank have stepped up in their support of RYDA, committing a further $3000 to the program in 2018. This financial backing will assist Rotary in attracting more attendees.

Meals on Wheels seeks help with balancing books Pomona District Meals on Wheels (MOW) provides an invaluable service, delivering meals at subsidised prices to the elderly and infirm from its commercial kitchen within the Pomona Memorial Hall.

It maintains its operations through the assistance of volunteers, who prepare and take nutritious food direct to private homes.

While the service welcomes volunteers at any time, it is in particular need of someone with accountancy and book-keeping skills, with special proficiency in

MYOB software. The administration team is also seeking drivers to assist with the Pomona, Cooroy, Eumundi and Boreen Point delivery runs three days a week. All training will be provided.

The MOW facility operates from 7am to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Drivers would be required between the hours of 10.45am and 1pm on those days.

Hinterland traffic blackspots missing from roads fix plan The major strategic plan that Noosa Council will rely upon to guide the upgrade of major intersections and congested lengths of roads along the principal road network across the shire for the next 18 years omits reference to two of the hinterland’s most pressing road blackspots – the Six Mile Creek Bridge at Pinbarren and the winding and narrow Pomona-Kin Kin Road.

“Holland Traffic Consulting Pty Ltd has been commissioned to undertake a traffic study of the Noosa Shire area with the aim of assessing past and present traffic conditions of the Major Road Network and predicting traffic growth and identifying road system upgrading requirements to the year 2036,” the report states.

The Noosa Traffic Study 2016-36 prepared with the assistance of Holland Traffic Consulting Pty Ltd has identified the most critical part of the Noosa road system as the section of Eumundi Noosa Road between Beckmans Road and Eenie Creek Road, with the Beckmans Road realignment and four-laning running a close second.

Noosa Council acknowledges that the study focussed particularly on the Council-controlled network, and therefore roads mainly in the coastal area of the shire. “But it has also assessed critical locations on the State-controlled network, even though responsibility for funding upgrading at those critical locations rests with the State government,” the council says.

Several coastal intersections and roundabouts have been identified for upgrades also, with the only hinterland projects rating a mention being at Cooroy – the Elm-Myall street intersection and the ElmDiamond street T-intersection, which are the subject of negotiations involving the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Noosa Council.

TMR has proposed traffic signals for both locations.

Hopefully, additional projects will find their way into the strategic planning process through regular reviews and updates. “Given the 20year time horizon to 2036, it will be necessary to regularly (every 4-5 years) review and revise this traffic study to ensure recommended infrastructure improvements correctly align with actual and future population growth and evolving future traffic projections,” the council explained.

The Noosa Traffic Study was commissioned to inform the preparation of Noosa’s new planning scheme and to be the basis of horsetrading involving the council and TMR about funding for priority works on state-controlled roads. The Six-Mile Creek Bridge and PomonaKin Kin Road, as well as the intersection of Reserve and Factory Streets at Pomona are statecontrolled sites and corridors.

“This will also allow Noosa Council’s forward infrastructure planning and capital works program to more accurately reflect the actual demand required for the road network.

Subsequent supporting studies will be necessary to assess the future public transport, pedestrian, and cyclist requirements of the network.

Their omission from the planning document means that the projects that are included are likely to receive attention first.

In this respect, greater uptake of public transport, walking and cycling will reduce traffic demand on the Noosa road network and reduce the extent and cost of infrastructure upgrading that would otherwise be required.”

New speed advisory sign for Hill Street A new advisory speed sign erected by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) recommends that motorists slow to 40kph as they negotiate the intersection of Hill and Factory Streets and Subway Avenue adjacent to the Shell service station.

The corner is a busy location, as vehicles enter and leave the servo or turn in or out of Subway Avenue.

The problem is exacerbated by pedestrian traffic, governed by the scheduling of performances at The Majestic Theatre.

Motorists encountering the sign as they traverse Factory Street say it is difficult to see behind the awning posts of the theatre.

TMR and Noosa Council have discussed plans to eventually convert the intersection of Hill Street and Subway Avenue to a T-intersection from the current Y configuration.

Pomona audiences to welcome return of Film Festival

By Jacki Bazzo Like the fabled bird that, having been consumed by fire, rises again from the ashes, the Majestic Theatre is on track to restore one of the iconic theatre’s original attractions. Hosted by local icon Ron West and held over three days from Friday 1st to Sunday 3 June, the ‘Phoenix Rising’ Film Festival will feature classics and diverse film genres.

In 1973 Ron and Mandy West ran the first Travelling Film Festival – showcasing six of the best films from the previous year’s Sydney Film Festival. The brainchild of the Sydney Film Festival’s David Stratton, it was designed to take this program to rural and outback Australia, giving those areas an opportunity to experience the best of world cinema.

The experiment certainly paid off in Pomona. The inaugural festival ran over one weekend with six films screened over five sessions, attracting an eager audience of 180 – 190 patrons per session.

For the next 20 years the annual event continued to draw sizeable audiences but declined when modern cinema chains showing international films descended all

The ‘Cooroy Makerspace’ was officially opened recently by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, the Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton MP, State Librarian Vicki McDonald and Noosa Council’s Libraries and Galleries Manager Kerri Contini. The concept of a makerspace, also called hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fab labs, is to create places where people gather to work on joint creative projects, typically involving technology.

Artist looks inwards at her creative self A new exhibition has opened at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery featuring local artist Jeanine Hill.

Looking In is a collection of abstract and realistic canvases informed by living from the inland to the sea and from a lifetime of working with people. She paints mostly from memory and experience.

Jeanine has been painting seriously for the past five years, resulting in an eclectic variety of work. She is a social worker, now part-time, who understands that all are influenced by their own experiences, which shape our view of things. Her work reflects the ideas, feelings and atmospheres of what she sees about her.

Jeanine’s exhibition invites us to explore her world and measure our own life’s journey against her depictions.

The exhibition is on show at the Banana Shed and runs until 31 May 2018.

RAILWAY PATH PROGRESS Officials of Queensland Rail and Noosa Council were due to meet on 30 April to discuss the plans for the new Pomona Railway Station and the pedestrian and bicycle path over the North Coast Railway Line. Once finalised, the plans will be made public, hopefully in the next few weeks. Funding fore the project will depend on transport allocations in the 2018-19 State Budget.

Ideas for the Hinterland start to take shape Three ‘big idea’ projects funded with the assistance of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) have the potential to develop the Noosa Hinterland tourism prospects, rural economy and celebration of local indigenous culture.

The NBRF is spending about $100,000 on the projects, which have a combined value of $260,000. They are: 

A Master Plan for the Noosa Trail Network that aims to prevent misuse of this important environmental asset while supporting and managing the sustainable use of the network and its surrounding areas;  A rural enterprise study of the hinterland’s agricultural land and industry that identified new business opportunities, crops and farming practices that will strengthen the rural economy and the viability of individual farming enterprises; and  A $19,500 project to allow the Marine Ecology Education Indigenous Corporation (MEEIC) to develop multi-media information for tourism and education, focussed on the Noosa Rivers and lake system. Annie best of the field On Anzac Day this year, Annie Shewring, 28, a Cooran local until she left the area for university, represented Australia in the first Women’s AFL exhibition match against France at Villers Bretonneux.

Annie previously played AFL for the University of Queensland team for several years and though narrowly missing a spot in the first women’s Lions team, played in a Queensland team against Western Australia.

Her family was delighted to be able to watch the game through live-streaming on You Tube and cheered her on regardless of the distance.

The final score was Australia 74 – France 21 with Annie being named best-on-ground for the Australian team. Annie is pictured above in blue with the French team’s best-on-ground player, the two having swapped jerseys. Annie, now living in Berlin, told her family that it was one of the best experiences of her life.

Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases.

Cooroora Connect is an initiative of the Pomona & District Community House Inc. The material published in Cooroora Connect may be reproduced only with appropriate authorisation and acknowledgment.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses. The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
