Volunteers are the backbone of community groups throughout Australia and, in Pomona alone, there are at least 15 organisations that rely on the contribution and support of volunteers. These groups wouldn’t be able to do their amazing work without them. Pomona and the hinterland has the highest incidence of volunteerism in Noosa Shire according to figures compiled by Noosa Council.

This year the King of the Mountain Festival will celebrate its 40th year and event organisers are working hard to ensure it is the biggest and best yet. In the lead up to the King of the Mountain Festival on 22 July is the 12th annual Poker Run on Sunday 1 July. Proudly supported by the Overlanders Motorcycle Event Group, motorcyclists and their passengers will enjoy a scenic trip through the hinterland and can join in on a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops. The holder of the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner and there are additional random prize draws during the day. Last year saw over 150 riders participate in the popular Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club major fundraiser. Cost of entry is $20 per rider (including poker hand) plus $10 per pillion (non-poker hand).

For the past five years, Pomona has been the outdoor workspace for Year 3 architectural students from QUT. They are sent to Pomona to assess the town’s character, built form and open spaces and head back to the lecture halls to re-imagine the town. According to one of the course lecturers, Yasu Santo, the experience simulates architects obtaining a brief from their client before proceeding to design. Pomona residents have become used to the students’ visit every March. One hundred and twenty students are involved this year – 40 each for the hall, museum and theatre. Now the QUT is inviting Pomona residents to inspect the students’ work. Each student will present their design over an entire day on Thursday 14 June, from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Viewers may stay the whole day, or part of it and watch how a panel of tutors and invited architects critique the students work. The assessment takes place at the Gardens Point campus of the QUT (next door to Parliament House). Participation is free. Gallery Director Michael Brennan says the art exhibition and festival for children promises to both educate youngsters and excite their senses through a fusion of artistic guidance, creative play and handson projects.

New railway station and path to be built early next year The people of Pomona will be walking their new cross-town path over the railway tracks and catching trains from a newly-constructed and extended railway station platform from late April or early May 2019, Queensland Rail (QR) officials have confirmed.

Where do families go to get support if someone they love is struggling with drugs or alcohol? When someone in the family is problematically using drugs or alcohol, everyone suffers. How do you keep loving, caring and supporting someone when broken promises, abuse and generally negative behaviour is what you get back? For many families, the journey has been a long one with seemingly no end in sight. Exhaustion sets in with immense sadness and loss of hope for the future. Nothing can ever prepare family members for this journey. Life for everyone in the family changes forever. Yet despite the chaos, families continue to hang in there and support their dependent person. Many of which have simply stated that without their family’s support, they would not have survived. However, the big question is who supports the families? Rather than finding support, families often feel judged, blamed and shamed. They face enormous challenges and without support, isolation and helplessness will set in. It is a nightmare that no one can fully understand. Help and support is available from Family Drug Support (FDS). FDS is a not-for-profit organisation that has been providing a range of support services specifically designed for family members of drug and alcohol users for over 18 years. Stepping Stones is FDS’ flagship award winning support program. FDS has been delivering this course for over a decade providing reality based support to over 1500 family members. “We have delivered this program nationwide over 150 times nationally in the past 15 years bringing support to over 1500 family members. Along the way, we have seen the enormous difference from when people enter the course and when they leave”, he says.

Young women's group seeking new funding Since October 2017, the Young Woman Collective (funded by Dept. of Communities and located in the Lawson Shed) has been a place where young women aged 12 - 18 years have been able to get together, have fun, and engage in many and varied creative activities.

On the 1 May, Pomona officer Senior Constable Wayne Metcalfe age retired from the Police Service, with close to 20 years service. Wayne worked at Pomona station from 2010 for eight years and was well liked by the community and his peers. Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases.

Cooroora Connect is an initiative of the Pomona & District Community House Inc. The material published in Cooroora Connect may be reproduced only with appropriate authorisation and acknowledgment.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses. The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
