STATEMENT FROM QUEENSLAND RAIL CEO Queensland Rail has commenced investigations for the potential closure of a number of high-risk Open Level Crossings (OLCs) on the Regional Network to ensure compliance with nationally-recognised safety standards. The review is being undertaken as part of Queensland Rail’s commitment to deliver a safer, more efficient and reliable railway. Queensland Rail is proposing to close a number of OLCs identified as either non-compliant with nationally-recognised safety standards, or as compliant but with low usage. This includes the mid -town pedestrian crossing at Pomona Station Yard. In assessing the pedestrian crossing proposed for closure, Queensland Rail has considered the identification of alternative formal crossings for use in the immediate vicinity. While engineering upgrades and improvements can reduce the potential for accidents between pedestrians and trains, Queensland Rail has determined that closure of this high-risk pedestrian crossing is the best way to eliminate safety risks. Queensland Rail will be undertaking a thorough consultation with the community and key stakeholders to identify potential issues, impacts and concerns to help inform the closure review. This consultation will commence in the next month and the project team will gladly keep you informed of the process. The consultation program will provide clear, concise and transparent information about the proposed crossing closure and review process, including safety considerations, national safety standards and alternative crossings. Advocacy group backs push to keep railway path open Queensland’s leading public transport advocacy group, Rail Back On Track, is supporting moves by a determined Pomona community to keep open its cross-town pedestrian pathway with the addition of safety enhancements if necessary. Robert Dow, spokesperson for Rail Back On Track said: “While safety should always be the number one priority for operating trains and managing tracks across the Queensland Rail network, all the alternatives need to be explored, including making existing crossings safer, before a unilateral decision is made to close at-grade paths over rails as the easiest option to make them safe. “The practical consideration of working railway towns and how people access their railway station or get about, including where tracks bisect a community, needs to be thought through to ensure that closure of open pedestrian pathways dosen’t affect connectivity and the economy of towns where people still find it convenient to walk or cycle to where they want to go. “The various state transport agencies should take care that their strategies do not conflict with each other – active transport initiatives and guidelines governing Transport Oriented Developments, as well as town plans and footpath grids. We have seen elsewhere the consequences of uncoordinated planning and actions between Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Queensland Rail. “This matter has come into sharp focus at Pomona, in the Noosa Hinterland, where a mid-town pedestrian pathway that has linked both sides of the town for more than 100 years is slated for closure by Queensland Rail, yet there has been no reported incidents of death or injury there for the past decade. “A real opportunity exists to make the current pathway safer, linked to the proposed upgrading of the temporary railway station to a permanent structure. “It represents a significant opportunity to unify the town and not divide it by sending people out of their way to cross the North Coast Line at the busiest traffic point in Pomona. “By proposing to close a pedestrian and cycle pathway located some distance from a level crossing controlled by boom gates and pedestrian refuges, Queensland Rail and TMR need to be satisfied that users redirected to the alternative crossing point are not placed in greater risk of being struck by a car or truck. “Otherwise the precepts of the 10-year Queensland Level Crossing Safety Strategy 2012-2021, which Rail Back On Track supports, become self-defeating.”

RAIL PATH CLOSURE The footpath that the people of Pomona have used safely to get from one side of town to the other for more than 100 years is set to close under plans revealed by Queensland Rail (QR). QR says the mid-town crossing of the North Coast Line, between the Pomona Hotel and the Majestic Theatre is used by insufficient numbers of people to justify its upgrade and its current design does not comply with nationallyrecognised safety standards. Therefore, the plan is to close the path at a date yet to be announced. Noosa Shire’s Infrastructure, Planning and Design Manager, Carl Billingham, last month confirmed that QR officials had met with council staff regarding the planned pathway closure and stated that the council position was that the pathway should not be blocked. “If QR decides to proceed with closing the mid-block crossing, we have told them that the alternate routes to cross the railway will need to be upgraded to a standard suitable for all users (pedestrians, disabled, cyclists, horses etc.) and appropriate pathways included in their scope of works,” Mr Billingham said.

Noosa District High pupils mean business More than 260 students at Noosa District State High School are about to get a taste of life in the corporate business world. It’s all part of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) and its exciting one-week intensive program. Starting on June 16, the entire Year 11 cohort will experience what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. Working as a team, students will be running a cafe simulation business and with the help of a business and teacher mentor, discover the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business. Through the week, students perform a number of tasks. They’ll form a company of 15 members, each with an assigned role in the running of the company. Students will then review an ABW manual covering the key business areas, make decisions about

Emerging artist paints her ‘Freedom of Expression’ Emerging artist Janey Richards presents her first solo exhibition, Freedom of Expression, at the Old Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery later this month to the delight of those who appreciate her abstract works, which are inspired by the vibrant colours of Queensland and the natural world. Janey uses art to convey her passion for the environment and the beauty and harshness of our land and its extremes. “Through colour and abstraction, I want to bring to the fore the dramatic nature of a parched land, its golden grasses and contrasting subtropical splendour,” she said of her upcoming exhibition. All are invited to the official opening at 11am on Sunday 25 June. Janey has been very much
inspired to develop her artistic talent since moving to the Noosa Hinterland from Sydney, her home town, in 1997. Janey’s artworks are individual journeys of creativity mixed with emotion and colour. Her subject matters are inspired mostly by the vibrant colours of Queensland, the natural world and her love of abstract expressionism. Thanks Pomona for anti-violence stand Pomona showed its incredible community spirit in overwhelming support for the Domestic and Family Violence awareness campaign last month. When a whole town speaks out, the message can’t help but be communicated. On Wednesday 24 May, shopkeepers and businesses, staff and volunteers, groups and organisations in Pomona put on anti-violence ‘Cool It’ bandanas and said, ‘NO to Domestic Violence!’

Green Army boosts Bushland Care groups’ war on weeds The latest Green Army team to help support Noosa Bushland Care group’s war on weeds earned their stripes this month. Nine participants have spent the past 23 weeks removing environmental weeds from Noosa’s bushland reserves. They graduated officially on 19 May, days after a celebratory morning tea in recognition of their contribution to local conservation. Noosa Council Natural Areas Officer, Michael Lyons, said the group of 17 to 24-year-olds – the third Green Army team to join conservation efforts in Noosa since 2014 – had shown great enthusiasm. “The Green Army program is a fantastic way for young people to enter the Natural Resource Management industry and the workforce in general.

Pomona switches to Noosa in redistribution The Queensland Redistribution Commission has made changes to its suggested boundaries for electorates across the state, resulting in abandonment of plans for Pomona to move from the Gympie electorate to the seat of Nicklin, based on Nambour. The commission’s final determination is that Pomona will be included in the Noosa electorate, currently represented by Mr Glen Elmes MP.

“However, as a populous area, it was not possible to accommodate the degree of change desired by these submissions. The commission has instead transferred the majority of the Pomona locality, as well as parts of the Cooroy and Lake Macdonald suburbs from the proposed Nicklin.

Mowing for Bravehearts Seventy-year-old Claude Harvey (pictured with Cooroy Pomona Lions Club members) received a further $200 from the club towards his eventual goal of raising $1million in support of The Bravehearts charity, an organisation which helps and supports children affected by sexual abuse. Claude was in Pomona as part of his marathon walk, pushing his lawn mower, affectionately named Maude, around Australia. Claude has pushed the coincollection lawn mower through unchartered territory in his 10 years of fundraising for Bravehearts.

Trash to Treasure recycling craft group Volunteers at the Pomona Community House are pooling their talents to make and fill some special activity bags. The bags (suggested by Sunshine Linus group) are for children who end up having to spend time at a police station, often after fleeing domestic violence situations. Imagine you are a child and someone grabs your hand and says, ‘Come on’ and you are taken to a place where you have to ‘behave, be quiet, sit still and wait’. Then it’s off to who-knows-where with only what you can carry. The activity bags are given to the children and provide, at least, some diversion in a pretty grim situation. Thanks go to local groups and individuals that have supplied the materials used so far. Boomerang Bags has supplied us with 20 bags to fill Lawson Shed, Mon & Thurs 12.30-3.30pm. Trash to Treasure are making fidget/comfort toys and pencil cases - Lawson Shed, Thurs 12.30-3.30pm. Pomona Pixies have made some scarves (also flowers and pom-poms to jazz up other secret work!) Men’s Shed are looking to make some small activity toys like spinning tops and skipping ropes - Men’s Shed, School Street, Wed & Sat 7.30-12.30pm. However, we are still collecting some bits and pieces and would love your assistance. Think of the kind of thing that you would be happy to find in one of these bags – colouring pencils, sharpeners, playing cards, combs, small note pads, other small activities. Anything people can contribute will be gratefully received – either at the Lawson Shed during our sessions, or you can leave items at the Community House between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. A veritable treasure chest of off-casts, leftovers and ‘clean-outs’ are being turned into valuable and useful works-of-arts, then returned to the community through the umbrella charities of Sunshine Linus and Angels for the Forgotten.

Pomona Pacers climb the heights for fitness Seven members of Pomona Pacers took an opportunity to view the town from a different angle recently. Not one of the group’s regular everyday walks, the bush track to the base of Mount Cooroora and just the beginning of the climb to a lookout point required a little more exertion than normal. It afforded a pleasant change of scene without even leaving town! The National Heart Foundation recently conducted Heart Week, with the Sunshine Coast Heart Week Expo drawing many attendees to the sparkling new venue of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Drop Off Your Used Spectacles At Pomona Community House Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases. Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles, sunglasses and new frames. The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
