A WHEEL BARROW FULL OF GOODIES FOR POMONA GARDENING GROUP The Pomona & District Community House is thrilled to take delivery of a wheel barrow full of gardening tools for its newly formed Gardening Group. President, Dawn Gwynne, said she was very excited by the delivery and that the tools would make work around the Community House and Lawson Shed much easier.

We are very grateful to the Sunshine Coast Council for providing such an array of fantastic equipment,” said Dawn. “We are all about growing fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs and giving people the opportunity to share their knowledge, learn new skills and to make friends whilst doing something really worthwhile.”

Community Engagement Coordinator, Kathryn Shewring, added that she hoped some of the fresh produce would make its way into the meals cooked in the regular Community Kitchens held at the Lawson Shed.

Anyone interested in being a part of the group or simply finding out more can call into the next Gardening Group meeting on Friday 29th June at 9.30am at the Lawson Shed or for information about the Gardening Group or the Community Kitchen call 54852427.

Pomona & District Community House Awarded $27,459.10 Pomona & District Community house is very pleased with the announcement from Qld Government and the Gambling Community Benefit Committee that we have been successful in our grant application.

Funding will go towards installing solar power to both buildings, skylights and kitchen equipment for the community kitchen program.

Grahams Road Sub-Station - Update Following a meeting between Energex officials and about 12 residents at the new electricity sub-station site off Grahams Road, Pomona, it was agreed to substantially increase the landscaping budget for the $12.5million project. The new landscaping will significantly reduce the visual impact of the substation on the local environment.

Residents had complained that the sub-station extension was much larger than originally envisaged and that landscaping worth $60,000 undertaken so far was inadequate. It had failed to hide the machinery and electrical switching equipment on site. Energex undertook to boost the scope of landscaping in the second stage so that the extra planting and screening hedges would be completed by the end of August, the date for commissioning the new facility.

Once brought into operation, the enlarged substation will allow Energex to have more options for directing electricity flow according to demand and to bring houses back on line more quickly after electricity blackouts.

The Green Thing In the line at the store, the young girl cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The old woman apologized to her and explained, “we didn’t have the green thing back in my day.” That’s right, they didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, coke bottles and beer bottles to the store.

The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she’s right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of the state of Tasmania. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the train and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus, instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But that old lady is right. They didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Odd that young ones would lament how wasteful older folks were just because they didn’t have the green thing back then!

VIEW Clubs throughout Australia are about to reach a milestone as they eagerly await their 1000th Learning For Life Student here in Australia.

Nearly 606,000 Australian Children are currently living in jobless families, with the effects and financial disadvantages laying added pressures for the basics of Life. Their disadvantage holds them back from accessing the same educational and life opportunities as their peers.

Cooroy VIEW Club along with over 400 other VIEW clubs throughout Australia continue to work along side the SMITH Family to assure many of these children get the opportunities they deserve.

Education is the key!!

We are only a small part of the path with The VISION being a Better Future for Young Australians in need. A BELIEF that a every child deserves a Chance and a MISSION to create opportunities for Young Australians in need providing Long term support for their particular education.

Our little friendship club supporting each other as friends, meets monthly for Luncheons in COOROY and Socials supporting the above.

At Pomona State School, we have some great recycling programs currently in place and recently our school signed up for a new mobile phone recycling initiative.

Gifts4Mobiles is helping support local schools throughout Queensland and New South Wales to access incredible prizes for collecting unwanted mobile phones.

By recycling our old mobiles, iPods and iPhones we can receive Apple iPads to support our students’ learning. For every 250 phones collected our school can receive an iPad. If our school can collect 1000 phones, Gifts4Mobiles will donate a 5th iPad to our school. So please start looking in your cupboards.

Ask your friends or family if they have an unwanted mobile and place them into the collection box which is located in the office foyer.

Road closures for Pomona King of the Mountain Festival

The 33rd annual King of the Mountain Festival in Pomona is being held on Sunday 22 July and as per previous years will include the following street closures:    

Reserve Street between School Street and the eastern side of the railway crossing from 6am to 5.30pm Memorial Avenue between Church Street and Station Street from 6am to 5.30pm Hospital Street between Mountain Street and Memorial Avenue from 6am to 5.30pm School Street between Mountain Street and Reserve Street from 8.30am to noon Mountain Street between School Street and Church Street from 12.30pm to 5pm

Alternative routes around the festival area are via School Street, Factory Street, Railway Parade, Red Street and Rectory/Church Streets. Detour signs around the affected areas will be posted.

The Pomona King of the Mountain is run by Cooroy Pomona Lions Inc as a free not-for profit event.
