An Initiative of Pomona & District Community House Inc.
Documentary shows PCH green credentials to the world Late last year Pomona Community House was approached by the ‘Greenhouse Around the Corner’ project, an initiative of Adult Learning Australia. The project is designed to provide energy efficiency information to the adult and community education sector. Adult Learning Australia had heard of the construction of the Lawson Shed and its cost cutting design measures which contribute to self-sufficiency and the reduction in carbon emissions. When interviewed for the project, Brian Lawson explained that it was a seven-year saga from the realisation that the existing Community House had become too small to cater for what the community needed. The proposed building was priced in at around $350,000 to build a design that would blend in with the Pomona Community House and the Pomona Memorial School of Arts Hall. In the end we were only able to come up with a total of $149,000 so Brian decided to find a way of getting the job done on such a small budget.

Bendigo Bank in search for premises
Work progressing on new fire station
The Bendigo Bank is discussing with a couple of business owners arrangements for setting up a subbranch of the bank in an existing shop at Pomona, ahead of the closure of the ANZ Bank branch – the town’s only bank – at the end of October. A stand-alone branch in its own building or shop remains a goal according to Cooroy’s Bendigo Bank manager, Geoff Edwards, but a bank facility within an existing business is the starting point. Bendigo Bank also proposes to place an automatic teller machine in Pomona for the convenience of customers. To assist in making a Bendigo Bank for Pomona a feasible proposition, open an account at the Cooroy branch and ask that your account be listed on the ‘Pomona book’. Your account will be transferred to the Pomona subbranch when it opens. Geoff is keen to talk to people about loans also, especially the Bendigo Bank’s competitive home loans.
After earthworks involving the removal of contaminated soil due to the presence of an old underground fuel tank on site, Pomona's new fire station in Reserve Street is moving beyond the foundations stage. The scale and shape of the new building -- a signature building for the town -- is now plain for all to see. The adjacent ambulance station will be painted in complementary colours. By early next year, Pomona's new emergency services precinct will be ready for business. Please note the colours represented here are not the final colours of the fire station. The fire station will be cream.

Four-legged friends meet for morning tea Working together with man’s best friend On Wednesday 15th October, visitors to the next ‘Community Connect’ morning tea will find themselves surrounded by ‘furry’ friends. Three wonderful organisations, Smart Pups, Pets for Life and Adopt a Greyhound are coming together to share information about how we can support man’s best friend and how they support us. SMART PUPS is an Australian charity organisation training Assistance Dogs for Special Needs Children. The Smart Pups are task-specific Assistance Dogs trained to improve the quality of life for children with Autism and Seizure related syndromes. As well as unconditional love, the dogs provide increased independence for the children and much needed help to their families. PETS FOR LIFE offers older people free assistance to care for their pet with the help of a local volunteer. Senior citizens who dearly love their pet sometimes find it more difficult to look after them. Keeping up with regular exercise with our pets, for example, can become more and more difficult. Rather than giving our much loved animal away, a Pets for Life volunteer can help with these tasks. ADOPT A GREYHOUND (Friends of the Hound) are committed to saving the lives of greyhounds no longer used in the dog-racing industry by finding suitable homes for these wonderful animals who make delightful pets and companion dogs. Come and find out about these amazing organisations, the committed people who work in them and meet some of their four-legged friends.

Advocacy group renews calls for more daily train services
Abbey is aiming high with netball Budgies
South-East Queensland’s main public transport advocacy group has called on the state government to use the proposed sale of state-owned assets to increase the number of passenger rail services on the North Coast Line between Nambour and Gympie. Rail Back On Track spokesperson, Robert Dow, said the single track line had capacity during the day for two return shuttle services, connecting to frequent train and bus services at Nambour. Currently, Cooroy, Pomona and Cooran railway stations have just two return train services daily. Mr Dow said: “The population on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland is expanding and the population is aging. Many citizens are no longer able to drive or choose not to drive cars.” “A service that departs Nambour say around 7am, for a return from Gympie North at around 8.30am would be very useful for the community. Similarly a service that departs Nambour, say, around 4.30pm for return from Gympie North at 6pm. “The present limited rail weekday services are departures from Nambour at 11.30am and 7.36pm and departures from Gympie North 5.56am and 1.20pm. Keep these as is, but add in the two proposed shuttle services,” Robert said. “This would have a tremendous positive impact in this part of Queensland in terms of improved mobility. The infrastructure is there, so too the stations and track. It’s time these things were used property,” he said.

Prepare household plan to counter bushfire threat The rural fire brigade would like to advise us all to be particularly vigilant in regards to maintaining our properties over the next couple of months. Here are a few quick links to information you may find useful. In a fire, you may only have a few minutes from the sounding of the smoke alarm to when your life is seriously threatened by fire or smoke. It is very important that you prepare and practise an escape plan, that everyone knows what the smoke alarm sounds like, and that everyone in the household knows what to do in an emergency.

Council steps up green waste collection in hinterland Noosa Council is expanding the garden waste collection service to rural townships to counter the problem of green waste – lawn clippings, leaves, twigs, branches, weeds and palm fronds – going to landfill. Rural residents are being offered the service for a more environmentallyfriendly solution to managing their garden waste. This garden waste collection is an optional service. These lime-green lidded waste bins are collected from homes every fortnight on
the alternative week to the yellow lidded recycling bin. Currently, most Noosa residents either fill their household rubbish bins with green waste which goes to landfill, or take their green waste to the tip in a trailer themselves. Neither method is satisfactory. Green waste in landfill produces greenhouse gas emissions and takes up landfill space. Trips to the tip are expensive - petrol, tip disposal fees,
Controlling feral dog problem Residents in the rural areas of the Noosa Shire whose livestock or families are being harassed or attacked by wild dogs, dingos or foxes should contact the council customer service centre on 5329 6500 and provide detailed information about the nature of the problem. Pest animal control officers will contact the property owner to discuss the problem and work with the landholder on a pest animal control program. For more information contact Noosa Council Customer Service Phone 07 5329 6500 or email mail@noosa.qld.gov.au.
trailer use and registration costs, and the cost of the time taken. The green waste bins cost $65 per annum for a fortnightly collection. Once ordered from Council, a new green waste bin will be delivered in approximately four weeks’ time. The green waste collected by council is shredded, aged, mulched and made available to residents, free of charge, for use as garden mulch. More than 3000 coastal residents already use the garden waste service.
‘Waste not, want not’ In keeping with Noosa Council’s values of “waste not, want not,” and the “reduce, re-use and recycle” ethos, 3 cubic metres of single grind garden mulch is available to Noosa Shire residents, free of charge, at the Eumundi Road landfill site. If residents bring a trailer Council will load it for them. Mulch is also available at the Cooroy and Pomona landfill sites but Council does not have a loading service at these sites. To make it more attractive to dispose of unwanted items where they are most likely to be recycled effectively, the following items are accepted free of charge at Noosa Council’s waste facilities at Noosaville, Cooroy and Pomona:
All white goods such as degassed refrigerators, stoves, dryers Ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as car bodies, metal objects, gas bottles etc Clean paper and cardboard Co- mingled recyclables eg: ( items that are accepted into the yellow top recycling bin) Paints, pesticides, solvents, and waste oil up to 20 litres (commercial volumes not accepted) Car batteries Electronic waste (E Waste) TV’s, computers, monitors and all computer accessories.
Council urges residents to recycle as much as possible and suggests that items that are still useful and functioning may be left, without a fee charged, at Briteside Industries at the Eumundi Rd Waste Facility. Briteside Industries are a non-profit organisation that sells recycled goods and also restores items of furniture for resale. Alternatively, such items can left at, or collected by, charitable organisations. Reduce, re-use and recycle with Noosa Council. Permaculture Noosa seeks Is Lottie Queensland’s oldest sports competitor? new committee members Permaculture Noosa, which does wonderful work informing people about how they can make a natural difference easily and effectively in their own backyard, will hold its annual general meeting on Thursday 16 October at 7.30pm. The venue is the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Vacancies have opened among the ranks of the management committee. A secretary and at least two committee members are required.
Pomona Indoor Bowls members took the time out on the 10th of September to acknowledge Lottie Hurford (pictured above with Cr Sandy Bolten) who, at a 104 years old, is the oldest indoor bowls player in Queensland. Lottie who is young at heart has been an active member with the club. Every week, Lottie travels from Gympie to join her pals on the carpet. These days, she lives with her daughter Phyllis Kerr. Known not only for her
bowls skills, Phyllis said her mother’s musical ability came to the fore over the years as well. “Her love of sport, tennis, dancing and her natural talent for music – playing the harmonica and the piano accordion by ear, still shows in her personality today,” Phyllis said. Playing cards was also another favourite pasttime, and probably goes some way to explaining Lottie’s incredible mental dexterity at 104-years-old.
The following committee members are offering themselves for re-election: President: Elisabeth Fekonia (while health permits) Treasurer: Ruth Sparrow. Committee members: Bronwyn McIntyre, Mark Fry. Vice-president: Tom Kendall, is uncertain about continuing in that role, due to work commitments. The following committee members will be retiring:
Lorraine Oats (Secretary), Tania Coppel, Rhondda and Eyre Jessop. For those who can’t attend the AGM, the Noosa Seedsavers Group meets every second Thursday of the month, with the next meeting to be held on 9 October at the regular venue, A Touch of the Past coffee shop, Reserve Street Pomona, from 9.30am to 11.30am. The meeting is a great chance to gain permaculture knowledge in a friendly atmosphere. During the gathering, seedsavers process and package seeds that have been saved by local gardeners. Once in small packets, the seeds are distributed through various means to gardeners on the Sunshine Coast, so that crops that have proved successful in this region can be kept in circulation, from one year to the next.

PLOD’S PAGE Hatfields and McCoys Part 2 We often receive calls to intervene in neighbourhood disputes, which can go from mild to toxic in just a few ill chosen words. As far as possible, we encourage the parties to engage and work out their issues without the involvement of Police, and this is successful in some cases. Local Council is often involved as well, lucky them! Issues such as excessive vehicle, machinery noise, unrestrained pets, fencing issues and simple personality clashes often result in protracted and nasty conflicts which often belie the age of some the combatants! Can I request that if you are involved in one of these unfortunate situations, you consider the other persons perspective and try to communicate your issues calmly before brandishing the pitch forks.

offender/s in possibly a 4 cylinder sedan with squarish headlights, has been driving past houses and removing letterboxes from the Pinbarren and Kin Kin areas.
With the Cooroy/Black Mountain sections of the Bruce highway upgrade now well underway, the inevitable lane closures and speed regulations, down to 70 kph on this busy section, have tested some drivers patience. You will notice an enhanced police presence around the night construction crews and also speed enforcement throughout the road works.
The letter boxes are often cut off and stolen from road shoulders directly in front of houses and are apparently chosen at random. Criminal offences committed by these morons include, Wilful Damage, Stealing and if mail is contained, Federal offences into the bargain.
The reduced speed limit is necessary in narrow single lane sections and for the egress of heavy and other vehicles to Luckily we have some vigilant, and from the site and importantly, to community minded residents out there enable motorists to better respond to who have provided some further details the changed conditions.
