All the fun of the fair at Cooran School Spring marks the start of the annual fete season and Cooran State School is one of the first off the mark with the staging of its annual Fun Fair and Carnival on Friday 16 October.

As the fire, flood and cyclone season approaches, Hinterland residents are being invited to join a local State Emergency Service (SES) branch.

In urging people to sign-up as members, Noosa’s Local Disaster Coordinator, Martin Drydale, said SES volunteers provided a vital service to the community. He said the local branch needed more volunteers to help it maintain the level of service residents relied on.

SES volunteer Carol Watkins said: “Being an SES volunteer is very rewarding because you can see first-hand the difference you are making to the community.” All SES members receive comprehensive training in areas such as: first aid; chainsaw use and safety; traffic control; radio communications; flood boat operations and working safely at heights.

Dale English will be presenting a talk at the Pomona & District Community House on Friday 25 September. Following Dale’s talk, experienced social worker and counsellor, Aimee Stanyer, will spend time exploring ideas around mindfulness and selfcare.

Mindfulness invites you to take a moment to focus on what is present for you and compassionate self-care helps us to refocus on practicing kindness with yourself.

This is a time to reflect on you and what is important to you – essential in dealing with our busy and sometimes complicated lives.

Five artists combine for clay exhibition Pomona’s Railway Station Art Gallery is the venue for an earthy exhibition of works by five talented artists. They have combined to present a body of clay works that shows freedom of expression, individual talents and ideas, yet expresses a feeling of ‘oneness’ and unity as a group.

Born from the shared passion of five artists for a single medium, the ‘Clay Illustrations’ exhibition creations are as versatile as the five artists are different.

Clay Illustrations is on display at the Pomona gallery’s railway carriage from 12 September to 7 October.

You can meet the artists at the official opening, to be held at 10.30am, Saturday 12 September.

Moriarty and Beverley Watkin have perfected their skills working as professional potters for more than 20 years.

Upon retirement, Beverley purchased a kiln, took up pottery and never looked back. She is also an accomplished painter. For this exhibition she will be exhibiting a selection of little bowls -lovely and practical.

Moriarty has been teaching and exhibiting her works for 30 years. She began with functional wares before specialising in large original (sometimes whimsical) sculptural forms.

Margie Gibson, also a talented fine art painter, says she is ‘drawing in space’.

Her work develops a complex geometry of lines and contours, with the outside edges of multiple holes allowing the viewer to see through and inside out.

Margie refines her works patiently, leaving only the curves to define hollow but dense sculpted shapes.

Carole Watkins specialises in alternative firing methods -- such as raku, smoke and saggar. She explains: “Generally, one is never quite certain of the result, leading to a certain serendipity, which is part of the fascination I have with firings. One thing can be guaranteed -- no two pots will ever be exactly the same.”

Beatrice Prost is a mixed media artist who started her creative journey with clay. She works mostly flat or with hand -built shapes. She is also attracted to

Show art exhibition will have Anzac theme The Noosa Country Show has extended the deadline for art exhibits in this year’s show, until 6 September which will be held on Friday and Saturday, 11-12 September.

This year, exhibitors are being challenged to paint entries to an Anzac theme, in recognition of 2015 being the Centenary of Anzac.

Art steward, Michael Leo, is anticipating an unusual display.

“Appropriating what is fashionably known as ‘Performance Art’, there will be an opportunity for art exhibition visitors to take part and make art on the day, in a respectful way, based on this sombre theme,” Michael said. Other imaginative exhibits will

also be on display.

“A Brisbane boy has entered what is probably the only meaningful reform of the conventional Buddha icon in the past thousand years,” he said.

Planning scheme changes Cooroy Horse and Pony Club support rural enterprise celebrates 50th anniversary Changes to Noosa Council’s planning scheme, currently open for public comment, will clear the way for new rural enterprise, according to Cr Sandy Bolton.

The changes would allow setting up various business enterprises easier, including small boutique farms, wellness centres, classes and bed and breakfast accommodation.

“The hinterland is the perfect backdrop for high-value lowimpact businesses,” Cr Bolton said.

The proposed changes would encourage eco-tourism and regenerative farming opportunities, and expand Noosa’s holiday options, she said.

“These amendments remove some of the hurdles preventing hinterland property owners from exploring these sorts of opportunities.”

The amendments allow for the use of up to three

bedrooms of a rural zone property to create a B&B, without need for a development approval. It is proposed that camp grounds and caravan parks would become consistent uses for rural zones, subject to an approved development application.

“Establishing overnight parking facilities for up to five fully self-contained RVs won’t require a development application, providing further accommodation options for visitors to enjoy personalised hosted experiences,” Cr Bolton said.

“These changes will help make life easier for operators of Noosa’s 7000 small businesses, which are the backbone of our local economy.”

The Cooroy Horse and Pony Club will celebrate 50 years of service to the town and district on Saturday, 10 October with a community get-together and demonstration of riding skills. Everyone is invited to take part in activities at the pony club grounds, located in Mary River Road, Cooroy.

The event will start at 3pm, when riding demonstrations will commence. A history display will be mounted, documenting the club’s achievements over the years.

An afternoon tea will be available also.

This will be followed by formalities and a campfire dinner, for which tickets are on sale. Overnight camping will be available, followed by breakfast on Sunday morning.

“There have been a lot of changes in pony club functions since the Cooroy club started in the mid1960s,” said president Vicki Knights, who has been

involved in the Cooroy club from 1995. “We have been fortunate to connect with many past members and learn a lot about the history, not only for our club, but for the pony club movement in general,” she said.

“We are expecting visitors from far and wide, so there is sure to be a lot of reminiscing on the day.”

Those wishing to attend the dinner on the evening of 10 October are urged to buy tickets early, as numbers are limited.

Tickets will be on sale from 15 September, from anniversary committee members in attendance that day at the Cooroy RSL Club, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

New connections theme of Seniors Week Nearly 30 men and women gathered at the Pomona Memorial Hall last week to celebrate Seniors Week. “New Connections” was aimed at finding new and fun ways to develop the connections in our brain that assist us to maintain focus, concentration and coordination as we age and also to maintain and develop the relationships and friendships that keep us engaged with life on a daily basis. The morning was a great success on both counts.

Local drama teacher, Louise Bezel who facilitated the morning, kept everyone on their toes (not literally) as she led participants through a series of playful exercises that had everyone laughing out loud and learning at the same time.

Sometimes there was so much laughter that it was difficult to remember the

intention of the exercise!

Some things that participants said they would take with them from the morning include the need to: listen more, get more involved with community events, step outside of their comfort zone, and the need to communicate regularly and stay in touch with friends.

Many of those at the morning said that they would love to see similar mornings on a more regular basis. If you would like to register an expression of interest for such mornings please call us on 5485 2427.

The morning was followed by lunch were our Seniors were spoilt with a delicious spread including being indulged with a magnificent celebration cake.

Three jobs go as care group merges offices

Eligible organisations and individuals have until noon, 30 September to submit an application for Community Projects Grants or Regional Arts Development Fund Grants (RADF).

Applications can be made through the Noosa Council.

Three jobs will go from the town and another gap will open in Pomona’s streetscape when the home care organisation Integrated Living closes its Pomona premises in Reserve Street and begins serving Noosa Hinterland clients from a new central office based on the Sunshine Coast.

Living, Ms Sue Lawton, said the opportunity to review the company’s presence at Pomona arose with the pending end of lease on its Reserve Street premises.

“Our lease at the Caloundra office is coming to an end also, so we are looking to combine both offices, possibly at a central location at Nambour. However, we have not found any suitable offices yet,” Ms Lawton said.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Noosa Shire Council to support the development of local arts and culture.

It supports local arts and cultural development opportunities by providing one-off, short-term, projectbased financial assistance to groups and individuals in regional Queensland.

Works starts on Rifle Street flood immunity Work is about to start on a $1.4 million project that will reduce the severity of flooding that impacts on low-lying parts of Pomona.

The focus of work is Rifle Street, where a roadside drain will be expanded to take a greater volume of water. That water will be diverted via a new culvert beneath the road to Cooroora Creek. Before the creek passes beneath Station Street, a large retention pond will be constructed, similar to the one in Reserve Street.

Noosa Council has collected more than 78 tonnes of rubbish on the first day of the annual kerbside bulk rubbish collection and, in the process, recycled more than seven tonnes of steel.

With six weekends to go, Council's Waste Manager Wayne Schafer is reminding residents to utilise Council's $20 mattress collection service. "Mattresses aren't collected as part of the free annual kerbside bulk rubbish collection because they can't be compacted in the waste trucks," Mr Schafer said. "So this year Council is providing a special prepaid mattress disposal service."

This will regulate the flow of water into Cooroora Creek at the Subway Street underpass. The three levels of government are sharing the cost of the project, which will require resumption of two houses. The mayor, Noel Playford, has praised Cr Tony Wellington for his efforts since the 2012 floods to find solutions to flooding issues at Pomona, Cooroy and Tewantin.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS BREIFS Reward for de-sexing dogs Noosa Council started posting out annual pet registration renewal forms from 1 September, with new fees, or no fees, applying to those who have their dog de-sexed. Free registration applies to pensioners who de-sex their dog, while other owners will pay less if Fluffy or Fido gets the snip.

However, the council will no longer offer a discount for dogs that are microchipped, to reflect changes in state law.

This means that most dog owners will pay $30 a year, according to Local Laws Manager, Phil Amson.

“It is now a legal requirement for dogs to be micro-chipped,” Mr Amson said.

Registration for a de-sexed dog is $30, or free with a pensioner discount. That compares with $140 to register a dog that has not been de-sexed or $115 with the concession.

The regulated dog registration will rise from $257 to $400 per year.

Mr Amson said that the second highest number of public calls received by Noosa Council concerned dogs, and responding to them was time consuming and costly. Noosa Shire has

Planning scheme changes Noosa Council is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to The Noosa Plan.

Cr Playford said private property zoning changes, changes to minimum lot sizes and urban density provisions had mostly been deferred for consideration as part of a new planning scheme.

“Any changes to private property are mostly limited to new estates where development plans may not have been finalised when the plan came into effect.

For example, the amendments will ensure that house blocks are shown as housing zones, and open space areas are also identified accurately in the scheme,” he said.

The amendments also include changes the State has made to bushfire hazard, water catchment and flood mapping.

“The proposed amendments will be open for public consultation until close of business on 2 October.

Cooroy Chamber hosts annual dinner with Mayor Noel Playford The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s annual Dinner with the Mayor has become a highlight of the annual calendar. The tradition continues this year with Mayor Noel Playford on Tuesday 6 October at the Cooroy Hotel.

Children’s Book Week was celebrated at Pomona State School with their annual book warehouse book fair.

It was truly wonderful to see the students so enthusiastic about purchasing books!

The book warehouse generously pays a commission on the books sold, so not only the student benefit, but the school also. Thank you to everyone in the community who supported the book fair.

The JKA Pomona dojo competed at the Japan Karate Association’s World Federation Queensland 9th Annual State Championships on 30th August at Murrumba State Secondary College.

The small team of 9 students who are mainly juniors came 2nd overall to the much larger JKA Brisbane team who had 28 competitors. There were ten teams competing overall from northern NSW and QLD. The students all did very well in all of their divisions with a few taking out gold in both divisions of kata and kumite. Nearly all students medalled in most of their divisions and if they didn’t they competed at their very best on the day. The team kata won a silver medal in a group of eight teams. The Pomona team has a really great team spirit and is endeavouring to get more numbers for next year to vie for the top position again.

Second album for Andrea Kirwin The second Album from Andrea Kirwin, "The Story of Us", is set for release on Friday 2 October.

Following her debut Solo Album, From the Ground Up, Andrea has crafted another 10 track Album of soulful original tunes that will again be launched at The Majestic Theatre Pomona.

This album is the second release from Andrea's independent record label, Peace Run Records, and was made possible thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund Grant from the Sunshine Coast Council.

Inspired by evidence of how using brain training programs can assist us to stay alert, and slow down the so-called inevitable decline of our brain functions as we progress in years, the Pomona & District Community House has recently acquired an extraordinary brain training program from Posit Science called BrainHQ.

We walk for 50-60 minutes in the morning but also enjoy social outings as well such as coffee mornings and a monthly moon walk along the Noosa River. We walk Monday to Friday (except public holidays) but you are free to come along on the days it suits you.

We like to explore the local area and you can see some members of our group enjoying the serenity of the William Martin Park near Cooran on one of our recent outings.

We currently meet in front of the Pomona Community House at 7 am but we will be changing to our summer program on the 1st October with a meeting time of 6.30am.

Irresponsible dog owners prosecuted Noosa Council is warning dog owners to control their pets or face prosecution following a spate of dog attacks across the shire.

Acting Local Laws Manager, Phil Amson, said the council is taking a hard line, including prosecution if necessary.

“It seems every year we go through a period where owners become complacent and we have a series of attacks.

Complacency, or being inattentive to your dog’s actions is no defence in legal proceedings. Dangerous dogs have no place in our community and it is every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal does not pose a risk to other people or animals,” he said.

Dog owners who let their pets wander face fines in excess of $230, plus impoundment charges.

Great Noosa Trail Walk postponed until October 2016 The Great Noosa Trail Walk – a trek by 150 walkers along the scenic paths linking the towns of the Noosa Hinterland – will not be held this year, due to considerable family and work demands of the principal organiser, Mr Shaun Walsh, and his core team of volunteers.

“We look forward to coming back in 2016, bigger and brighter, after a break this year,” Mr Walsh said in a post on the event website. “I am very disappointed, as I have not managed to spend time walking the Noosa Hills,” he said. While living locally, Mr Walsh’s work is in Brisbane.

Mr Walsh requested understanding from those anticipating another Great Noosa Trail Walk, which normally is held in October each year. Mr Walsh said he hoped to have more time for community work in 2016.

The decision to postpone the three-day great walk until next year is a blow to the local tourism economy of the hinterland villages. Those who normally take part appreciate the unique nature of the event – spectacular natural scenery interrupted by breaks at cafes, pubs and restaurants in towns along the way. In past years, special events had been arranged for trekkers at Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin. 18
