As the 20th anniversary of Pomona and District Community House (PCH) approaches, president Joy Cross says she can detect within the community a ‘strong, tangible and increasing’ atmosphere of spirit, friendship, belonging and openness.

Carwash to support brain injury patient A carwash will be held at Pomona Paint and Panel on Saturday morning, 10 October, to raise money for the Smiles of Strength charity in support of a young Cooroibah man, Luke Reinbott, who is recovering in the USA from radical surgery following complications arising from a brain injury suffered four years ago. The American visit cost $130,000, but the charity has raised only $114,000 and now must make up the shortfall.

Are you game to enter QUT question booth?

Chance to share community ideas about Pomona It’s a device designed to extract thoughts from your mind and it is coming to Pomona later this month.

However, residents need not fear their interaction with the specialised mobile question booth – a concept devised by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to record and compile residents’ responses to questions about how they want the town to look in 2036 – about twenty years time.

In collaboration with the Heart of Pomona (HOP) working group, QUT will place the question booth in town for approximately 10 days. Data fed into it by residents will be sorted by subject and level of interest, and forwarded to Noosa Council for consideration.

HOP facilitator, Brian O’Connor, said it was desirable that everyone had an opportunity to express an opinion about the town and its direction, and the question booth represented a novel way for capturing and collating data that would be examined for common themes. “It’s friendly, private and people can use it at a time that best suits them,” he said.

Users could even comment on another’s suggestions.

The first of its kind in the country, the telephone-style portable booth was designed by the QUT Urban Informatics team, made up of urban planners, designers and architects, and visual designers. At the booth, visitors can leave ideas, opinions and stories about the town through devices such as smartphones, computer tablets, photos and handwritten notes, commenting on Pomona’s vibe, its connectivity, open spaces, built form and services.

“The space allows people to tweet responses to the questions using a hashtag, send an SMS or use the pin boards and notepaper. Paper and pens are among the booth tools, so everyone can participate. There will even be opportunities for people to load pictures they take of things they like around town. “It is like going into the privacy of a polling booth to use whatever means people are comfortable with to express their views. People need not identify themselves, although we will want to record some basic data about age and demographics,” Ms Caldwell said.

She hoped people would be eager to take part and to explore the technology.

Ms Caldwell said the question booth project would allow the QUT team to capture information about the community directly from residents, in a form people felt was important and in ways they felt comfortable.

The design of the booth structure draws on the shape of a telephone booth and was created so it could be erected anywhere easily.

Its deployment to Pomona is the latest development in an ongoing relationship between Pomona and the QUT. For the past few years, the QUT has chosen Pomona as a country town case study, sending Year 3 architectural students to town to interview residents face to face about what is important to people, and about how the town looks and functions.

Towns folk have become the budding architects’ clients for a host of imaginary and imaginative buildings they then design at the university, but only as an academic exercise.

Noosa Council has approved a material change of use application that will see a disused forestry shed in School Street, Pomona, refurbished and extended to become the new permanent home for a Men’s Shed serving the northern Noosa Hinterland. Its purpose will be to provide a safe and friendly meeting environment with the objective of advancing the well-being and health of its members.

Hosted by the Noosa Museum, the event aims to communicate the values of the past, negotiate the values of the present and help identify things that will be important to the shire’s future. The Past Present and Future Heritage Forum explores the indigenous relationship with the land, the origins of European settlement locally, a brief history of the area and the region’s environmental values.

The natural resource manager at Noosa Landcare, Phil Moran, will be master of ceremonies, as well as giving a talk on the history of the organisation.

Among keynote speakers is Dr Bill Metcalf, of Griffith University’s Research School. Dr Metcalf is one of the foremost scholars of intentional communities worldwide.

His talk will examine the Protestant Unity Movement, which in the late 1880s began commune farming around the region.

Dr Stephen Nicholls, CH Unit DATSIP, will provide an update on Australian Archaeology. Dr Elaine Brown will provide a presentation from her research about the history of the Rev. Edward Fuller and the Lake Weyba Aboriginal Mission. Noosa Shire’s heritage librarian, Ms Jane Harding, will provide background to the concept and aspects of the Noosa Library WWI project. Between presentations, Ms Gail Robinson will provide a poetic response to the subject of each sessions.

Demons still kicking goals Describing a game of Australian football can be difficult. The lack of an offside rule and the quick speed of the ball tends to produce a spectacle of complete chaos. But, millions of Aussies love it and one of our local clubs has been producing great footballers for 42 years.

The Pomona/Cooroy & District Australian Football Club continue to be a proud club in our community and this season hasn’t been any different. The Demons held their club presentation day last weekend and the famous blue and yellow colours were out in force.

Setaria is Noosa’s most common pasture grass, but requires good technique to graze most efficiently. The workshop will include a short walk to an adjacent property to show how a soil test should be carried out and to examine some setaria. A $20 fee applies.

Workshops for the rest of the year are being planned including an equine workshop, a multi topic session/Christmas party, and feedback on holistic farming case studies launched earlier in the year.

Cooroy State School students continue to go high-tech.

Last week, they found a great way to thank one of their biggest supporters and promote their highly anticipated Showcase Week at Cooroy Memorial Hall at the same time.

For the past six years, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has provided thousands of Cooroy State School students the opportunity to develop their technology skills by building their own robot. It’s all made possible through the school’s heralded Lego Education Robotics Program.

Cooroy State School’s teacher, Melissa Lafferty was joined by Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards at a presentation in the hall as they watched the kids put the robots through their paces.

Melissa said the number of posters on show only strengthens the value the students place

“Students learn not only how to use technology, but also how to create it. During Showcase Week the students will get the opportunity to show what they’ve learned and celebrate the program in front of friends, family and the Bendigo Bank representatives who have made this program possible," she said.

The program began in 2009, and sees groups of students working collaboratively on programming basic commands for P-3 (the BeeBots and We-Do’s), right through to challenging science or maths-based problems with open-ended solutions for Year 6 and 7 students. Many of the robots are then able to be programmed to carry out specific commands as evidenced this week As one of the only programs of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy State School knows the school is onto a good thing.

“During our Showcase Week this week, it’s great to see the students present what they have come to value so greatly. They’re all so excited and, as a school, we were privileged to be able to deliver the Robotics Program right here in Cooroy. It’s a great initiative that sets us apart,” Mrs. Lafferty said.

Planning starts for next year’s Noosa Country Show Next year’s Noosa Country Show might have a Biosphere theme, as Perene Barker’s mind races with thoughts about making the 2016 event even better than the 106th show just completed.

The Noosa Show Society president reflected on her stewardship of the shire’s oldest continuous institution – her first time in the top job – and considered its future.

Last year she was ‘event organiser’. Under her direction, the annual show continues to evolve and endeavours to maintain its relevance.

A Biosphere theme would be one way of drawing attention to Noosa’s iconic world environmental status and help underpin the activities around Biosphere Day, traditionally held in September, the same month as the show.

“Our objective should always be bigger and better,” said Perene, as she thanked her hard-working committee and helpers for the biggest volunteer event in the shire’s annual event calendar. “We have got to keep standards up,” she said. The show requires more than 100 volun-

Sideshow alley had many more attractions this year, something Perene put down to enthusiasm of the Showman’s Guild in support of small country shows. “The guild agreed to pay double their site hire fees and to commit for a further five years,” she said.

“I feel we have turned a corner and, hopefully, sponsors also will want to contribute more next year.” Asked if there were lessons to be learned, Perene said: “I will be starting early trying to get sponsors on board; not with money, but just to have their commitment early so we can plan better.”

She hoped for greater sponsorship from what she described as ‘pondside Noosa’ – businesses on coastal parts of the shire. “Noosa is a shire, not a beach, so the show is for everyone across the region. More coastal people should come and enjoy a day at the show.”

Perene also thanked the singers who contributed to a strong entertainment line-up, many of them personal friends who just wanted to take part, or who gave generous reductions in their appearance fees. Headline acts included Gympie’s own Caitlyn Shadbolt, Kevin Barker and the Beagle Babes, the band Smokin’ Mirrors and even burlesque dancers on Saturday night.

Fireworks on the Friday night of the show and the Honky Tonk Rodeo on Saturday night were real crowd pleasers, as was the classic car display.

Perene and the Noosa Country Show committee thanked those who helped make this year’s show a success at a volunteers barbecue held two weeks after the show.

The Noosa Country Show was preceded by a Show Ball, held at the Pomona Memorial Hall on 29 August. Perene estimated that about 80 people attended.

Pomona popular with social and car clubs Amid calls for Pomona to promote itself more as a destination for day outings by social and car clubs, the concept was put to the test last month when 40 TR Register Triumph vehicles and 85 people came to town for a day at the pictures, hosted by the Majestic Theatre.

Already the town is a regular destination for motor bike enthusiasts and caravan clubs that appreciate Pomona’s facilities and country town feel.

Last month’s day out in the northern Noosa Hinterland was a resounding success for the TR Register club, formed in 1976 to preserve the sporty ‘side screen’ Trumph model and keep it on the road for years to come.

The visitors were from as far afield as Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and

Central West NSW, taking part in the club’s National Concourse D’Elegance 2015.

Members of the group based themselves at Noosaville from 3-10 September, but rated day trips to Cooroy and Pomona as highlights.

“We like to come to places like Pomona to support the town. This is a fantastic little place,” said Paul Bingham of the Gold Coast as he surveyed Mt Cooroora and contemplated the feat of runners in the annual King of the Mountain race.

Club president, Bob Watters, said it was the third time the group had staged its annual get-together in Queensland “Our club has great camaraderie and our activities allow people to share each other’s company and share their knowledge about the Registers,” he said.

The Rusty Hinge men’s and women’s new clothing store opened last month in the Memorial Avenue premises occupied previously by the Pomona Vet. It has attracted a lot of interest.

Transition to high school plan is succeeding Pomona State School and the Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) secondary campus are cooperating to ease the transition from primary to secondary education through a program that is earning high praise from parents and students.

For pupils leaving the state primary school system at the end of the year, the transition program has begun through an introductory course of activities that gives families an insight into the courses on offer at the middle school campus, beginning in Year 7.

The NDSHS serves a wide geographic area. During the past few weeks, Pomona Year 5 and Year 6 students have travelled to the other side of town to explore life at the secondary campus over half a day.

Year 7 Coordinator at Pomona’s junior secondary campus, Matt Fasso said working with the students and staff responsible for the transition program had been ‘fantastic’. “The students had a positive and fun day with us and it has been a pleasure working with them and getting to know them in preparation for next year,” Mr Fasso said.

The Pomona primary students facing transition had the opportunity to make a key ring in the industrial technology and design workshops, do some cooking in the home economics kitchens, spend some time with the animals at the Ag Farm, get a little bit silly in a drama performance and make slime in the science laboratories.

Make sure your pet is not ‘ticked off’ this summer The onset of warmer weather and humid and rainy conditions means it is time for pet owners to become vigilant about ticks attaching to pets, especially dogs. When not detected or treated, a paralysis tick on a pet can result in illness or, in worse cases, death. With an estimated 20,000 domestic animals paralysed every year in Australia, tick prevention has become a major focus for vets and pet owners alike.

Although paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) can be found all year round, the peak season is spring and summer, when warm weather combines with periods of rain. You need to be aware and check yourself and your animals regularly. Ticks can be found in your backyard, parks and bushland.

There are good topical products and collars that can decrease the risk of infestation.

Vital warning signs for impending paralysis include loss of appetite, lethargy, altered bark or meow, coughing, retching, gagging or vomiting, groaning or grunting, altered breathing, and wobbliness or weakness in the limbs.

Veterinarians advise that nothing beats regular and thorough checks of the dog itself. The best time to do so is straight after walks. Make sure you check the coat with a fine tooth comb ticks are much easier to get rid of before they attach and you could find one crawling around looking for a prime location.

If your dog has an especially thick coat, consider clipping it for the spring/early summer months.

Paralysis ticks normally infest native Australian animals, but can also cause problems when they infest livestock, domestic pets and even humans. Pets are primarily exposed to ticks when they traverse thick scrubby bushland, but unkempt suburban backyards can also provide a habitat.

The most common sites of attachment are around the head and neck, under the arms or collar but they can attach anywhere on the skin. Pet owners should talk to their veterinarian about tick preventative drugs and strategies.

It is extremely important to conduct a tick prevention search daily. Ticks found and removed early are much less likely to cause serious injury to the pet.

Ticks can often be difficult to find, even when fully engorged.

Ticks are not easy to see, so touch is very helpful in locating the tell-tale lumps and the craters they can leave behind. Ticks carry a lot of diseases, so some experts recommend wearing latex gloves. You may find this impedes your sense of touch, but remember, if you use bare hands, wash thoroughly with soap, especially after handling a tick.

A good tip for those less dexterous or squeamish about feeling for ticks is to use a blow-dryer to part the fur.

The most important thing is to be systematic in your search. Though ticks can attach anywhere, most ticks are found around the face, head/ears and

What to do if you find a tick on your dog?

The first thing is to establish if it is a paralysis tick. The toxic female is lighter in colour than the bush or brown tick, with longer legs and larger mouthparts. Unfed females are yellowish in colour and become greyish with a brown line circling the body as they engorge.

If it is a paralysis tick, watch your dog closely to determine whether it is showing any signs of poisoning.

If it is, call a vet as soon as possible and describe the dogs condition they should be able to tell you how urgently your dog needs treatment.

You don’t have a lot of time. It can take as little as 24 hours between first signs of paralysis to death for a dog with three to four ticks.

If symptoms manifest outside of normal vet hours and you don’t have access to a 24-hour service, try to keep your dog as relaxed as possible and do not give it anything by mouth to avoid choking, should throat paralysis set in, until you can get to a vet.

Don’t try to remove the tick as this may antagonise it. Kill it while it is still attached with a few drops of insecticide, but use agents that kill by paralysis, such as those based on pyrethrin or fipronil.

Once at the vet, depending on how sick the dog is, the vet will administer Tick Hyperimmune Serum. Be aware there is usually a time lag before it becomes effective, so your dog’s condition may still deteriorate for a day or more following initial treatment.

Shut up and drive When travelling around England and Germany, it’s amazing in the big cities to witness the almost symbiotic flow between cars, trams, buses, bicycles (by the thousand) and pedestrians, negotiating busy, partly cobbled city streets and footpaths without too much drama.

Cybercrime includes crimes directed at computers or other devices, such as hacking and online scams and fraud.

Common crimes reportable to ACORN by the public are money scams, identity theft, attacks on computer systems and the reporting of illegal online content.

To report a cybercrime, a member of the public can navigate through the ACORN website (www.acorn.gov.au) and click the ‘report’ link. The ACORN system will ask a series of related questions which should take about 10 minutes to complete.

ACORN will then consider if it should be referred for further investigation to agencies like Scamwatch, and at least have the matter recorded. For example, one of the ways in which, the ‘you’ve just inherited a few million dollars from a foreign royal family’ type scams can be attacked is by government agencies bombarding the identified offending website with millions of responses, effectively shutting it down.
