Pomona pool to be heated Cooking classes back at Community House After a lull in activity at the kitchen of the Pomona and District Community House Lawson Shed, cooking lessons are about to start up again. Longtime chef, Sean Bowman, (above) will head up a series of five lessons that will cover a variety of themes, including hearty casseroles and delicious Thai food.
Jo Berridge, Angela O’Malley and Belinda Wedlock, who all worked hard to successfully win a state government grant for the heating of the Pomona Swimming Pool are pictured with some of the young students who will benefit from this refurbished community facility. The Pomona State School Parents and Citizens Association has been successful in obtaining a $26,000 Community Benefit Fund grant to meet the cost of heating the Pomona pool so that it can operate nine months of the year. The pool sits adjacent to the school, but is available for anyone to use.
The campaign logo delivered the good news at a school gathering to mark Anzac Day.

The first lesson will be a ‘hamper scamper’, combining foods from the $35 food hamper available from Food Connection at Pomona (at the Options 4 U Op Shop in Memorial Avenue), with a few other ingredients.

There are many advantages to volunteering for both the organization and the volunteer. Most of the Community organizations in this area could not survive without their volunteers and therefore the "vollies" are Volunteers Week runs from 12 highly valued. -18 May. One huge advantage to People volunteer for many different reasons. Younger people and unemployed people volunteer at Community organizations to gain experience and confidence.
volunteering is that you are often able to perform duties and be involved with something that in a paid position you would not be qualified to do. It can open a whole new world!
They are then able to hopefully go on to gain paid employment. A lot of volunteers in this area are close to or are retired and are looking to meet people, feel part of the community, make friends or to further an interest that while working they didn't have time to
The role of the volunteer is a role that anyone can be part of and will make you feel very proud of your contribution.

When members of the Pomona Memorial Hall Committee wanted ideas for how they could improve the design of the building while improving its heritage character, they called on students from the Queensland University of Technology to consider ideas at a gathering of about 40 hall users and members of the public. Held last month, the committee joined Pomona and District Community House in hosting eight students from the university’s School of Design to put their skills to work, exploring various options. A priority for the committee is better toilet facilities, but students were given free reign to consider other alternatives. Some of their concepts are shown overleaf..

Students take a fresh look at the design of Pomona Memorial Hall The Pomona Memorial Hall is an iconic building at the heart of the town that could be redesigned to better serve its users, according to architectural students from the Queensland University of Technology who have ‘adopted’ Pomona as the focus of their course work for the first six months of 2014. Third year School of Design students have set about designing a new railway station, an extension to the Noosa Museum, an amphitheatre for Cooroora Creek Park, an eco-tourism lodge and other imaginary buildings for the town to be assessed for 20 per cent of their marks for Semester one. Their work will be revealed at a presentation day to be held at the QUT next month. A select group have had the memorial hall as their specific focus.
Here is how the façade of the Pomona Memorial Hall would look from Reserve Street as interior to become an alcove for relocated WWI memorial plaques housed within the building. (See images.) Students relished the chance to interview ‘clients’ (hall users) and interpret the views put to them.

The silhouette depicts a clock tower that would occupy the space now used for toilets. The toilets would be relocated within the hall extension under the student’s plan. The design was for study purposes only and is not part of any current plan to upgrade the hall.

Come and see the ‘new’ town concept You are invited to see the plans Queensland University of Technology architectural students have in mind for Pomona if the town was unfettered by town planning constraints and had unlimited financial resources. For the past few months, the students have used Pomona as an outdoor laboratory, re-interpreting the streetscapes and spaces to plan new buildings and public places. The hypothetical exercise counts towards the students’ first semester marks and have caught the eye of Noosa Council placemaking personnel interested in seeing whether any of the ideas are practical. The students will give their presentations in an all-day session at the QUT Gardens Point campus, Brisbane, on Wednesday, 11 June. They are eager to get feedback on their work from the local community. If you would like to attend, contact Pomona Community House for further details.

environment. John will tell his story, and use his heartfelt poetry to paint a picture of a world that was where men and women often did it tough, but where those experiences nurtured strength of character and individuality. Community Connect is an opportunity for locals to speak about or present something that they are passionate about.
The Misfits, otherwise known as Jim and Helen, started with an idea for a single skit over a year ago and now, they say, ideas come rushing nonstop. ‘Misfits’ have performed at the Cooran Acoustic Night and at other ‘Open Mic’ venues on the Sunshine Coast. Council to test Kin Kin quarry extraction limits Noosa Council will seek legal advice about whether it can limit the amount of rock that can be extracted each year from the Kin Kin quarry, thereby allaying residents’ fears that it will become a mega-quarry generating scores of truck movements on local roads. Councillor Tony Wellington said the council owes it to the Kin Kin community to resolve just how intensively the quarry may operate.
Noosa Council passed a motion that extended the life of the quarry. “That motion included the clear intent that there was to be no increase in the existing scale and intensity of the quarry. Any such increase would have to be the subject of an additional development application.
“This latest move is not about setting new conditions on the quarry. Rather, it’s an attempt to determine whether a pre-determined capacity is already in place. That’s why council needs expert legal advice,” he said.
“At the time of council’s decision, the operators, Readymix, had estimated their capacity as being 140,000 tonnes per year. Arguably, council’s aim was to not exceed that capacity,” said Cr. Wellington.
In related moves, the council will write to state authorities regarding both the suitability of the Pomona-Kin Kin haul road and to ensure that appropriate operating conditions are being met on the quarry site.
In 2010 the Kin Kin Community Group took court action contesting the quarry approval. By this time Neilsen’s Quality Gravels had taken over as quarry operator. “There are aspects of the legal judgement that raise questions about the limits of the quarry’s operations,” Cr. Wellington said.
A separate motion resolved not to proceed with any further efforts to upgrade Sheppersons Lane, a gravel road leading to the Kin Kin quarry. The motion noted that maintenance of the road is the responsibility of the quarry operator.
Noosa Council launches new library card
“The court judgement appears to suggest that the Readymix Plans under consideration in 2003 may set the capacity for the quarry today. In other words, the quarry may be limited to an output of around 140,000 tonnes. It is It seems that the quarry’s history might this aspect that’s being investigated provide a guide to limited extraction of now,” he said. rock, Cr Wellington said. “In 2003,
Noosa’s Mayor, Noel Playford, is the No.1 cardholder in Noosa Libraries’ membership card system launched last month. Distribution of new membership cards marks completion of the separation of Noosa Council library services from the Sunshine Coast Council. Library members can now collect their new card at Noosaville and Cooroy libraries or from the Noosa mobile library. The new library card will be able to be used at any branch of Noosa Library Service – Noosaville Library, Cooroy Library, the Noosa mobile library or via the online Noosa eLibrary. The new library card features the artwork of Lenni Semmelink who created one of the hanging banners in Noosa Library. The banners aim to raise public awareness and appreciation of Noosa's natural assets.
